[Q] Running Slow.... - Samsung Mesmerize

I have had Hienz 57 running for about a month now and it seems to be running really slow. Even while doing the smallest things like typing it will be a couple letters behind. Anyone have any ideas. I have cleaned all the app caches and deleted what I don't use any more but still slow.

That sometimes works but I was kinda looking for a more permenent solution. Would wiping the cache or dalvik possibly help?

you got voodoo enabled. what are your settings like...maybe you just need to re-odin then reflash the ROM and stuff...sometimes phones just need a fresh start

^Agreed. I can't count the times if done that. Mostly after I have went through five or so kernels but none the less it can't hurt and I haven't done it yet and regretted it.
Tap-a-Talked

There's a formatting utility here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1090127
I used the ext4 (voodoo) version and it worked great. I know they mean nothing, but I was getting 1500-1600 Quadrant scores before I ran it (still with voodoo), and I'm getting 1700-1800 now.

edit: This does wipe everything, so run your backups beforehand if you decide to try it.

That's the one I used today and it is freakin sweet. An excellant tool.

Yes I have voodoo enabled. I have not changed any voltage settings yet. When you say to re-odin are you saying to flash back to stock ec10 and then reflash the hienz 57? Still learning the terminology. I did go from the voodoo kernel to hienz without a fresh start. I also didn't wipe the data but for the first few weeks it ran awesome. I have also had a few half reboots. Like it would go to the android logo but not all the way to the samsung logo

+1 works great

Thinking of trying this but did you have the cwm 3 or just the 2.5.x? Also can I just flash the H57 zip and be back up and working?

Ran the utility and worked great. Have more memory too so the tons have been staying behind a little. Phone is much smoother and faster.

Normally i have zero issues with lag, however as of late I've had some slight issues with lag as well, even with lagfix enabled - to remedy it I simply enabled the 1120 overclock step and it's been fast ever since (and not too bad on the battery)

I just happened to be browsing the Sd card since I just dl the newest H57 and noticed that after formatting I dont have the android secure folder. Is this a problem or will it create a new one?

Replaced battery now FC galore.

When i picked up my charge i also got the desk cradle with the extra battery. Yesterday at work i was listening to music and drained the battery pretty quickly so i swapped in the extra battery. Once i rebooted i started getting a bunch of FC's. I'm getting ones for Google Services Framework, messaging, android.processes.acore and one or two others i can't remember. I reflashed GC and still get the errors. Anyone have any idea why this would happen after swapping batteries and how to fix this?

It just happens sometimes. Ill have to do this once every 3 months or so. Hope you made a backup...If you have the EXT4 formatter saved then just mount all in CWM, wipe all user data, dalvik, cache, etc. Then run EXT4 formatter, then flash GC. If you don't have it, you have to restock with the EE4 Odin and PIT, then reflash GC.

Happened to me a week or so ago, huge pain because I hadn't backed up in a while but it took me about a day or two to get all my apps back in order. In all honesty though it was one of the most annoying things that could happen. Had to redownload a ton of my apps and all the apps I had backed up were outdated(like ColorNote, I lost like 4 notes because it was an old backup). Happened totally out of the blue, I just rebooted the phone because apps weren't installing and I got spammed with FCloses. Not even a factory reset/cache/Dalvcache worked I had to flash the .pit/ee4factory.md5 to get my phone working again. PAIN IN TEH ASH.
Well son of a batch of cookies. That was my last resort but i suppose i will give that a shot this evening and report back to ya.

I finally got around to restoring my phone using the EE4 ODIN. I had no idea it was going to take over an hour to do, lol. Anyway, the flash completed and passed so I unplugged the USB cable, pulled the battery, but now I can't get the phone to turn on. Is there something else that I screwed up?

It should have not taken an hour. If you flashed without the battery try flashing again with the battery in.
Also make sure you are using the PDA button.. not phone. Flash will show pass if you use phone but it will not boot.

I dont know if you were rooted and on a rom already but for future ref., when this happened to me I just went into CWR, fixed permissions, wiped cache and dalvik, rebooted and bam the FClosing stopped. my wifes phone on the other hand I had to just go into CWR and flash the rom over again and it cleared the problem rather than going through ODIN.

I was rooted and running GC 1.9.1. I went into CWR and tried wiping just the cache and dalvik as well as flashing the rom again and I couldn't get the FC's to stop. Thanks for the info, I'll keep this in mind next time this happens.
I was on GC 1.9 when my mega galore of FC's started happening too, my end result was a replacement phone from Verizon... I really don't know what happened or why. It just randomly happened under normal use.
Wow, that kinda sucks. They didn't say anything about the phone being rooted? They gave me hell for trading my rooted D2G for my charge.

No because I flashed a bone stock ED1 with no root and nothing at all on the phone, I even had a blank 2GB SD Card in it.
Same happened to me. Yesterday I just clicked on camera and got a force close, then froze. Pulled battery, then everything was force closing. Only thing that would function was browser. Flashed everything, wiped data, you name it. Nothing has worked for me.

It depends on the level of data corruption I suppose. As an aside, roms should really be released with journaling enable or at least have that option. The slight speed increase is not worth the hassle IMO.

When it happened to me one the first things I tried was wiping cache and nothing worked. If you follow kv's advice and that doesn't work then the only other method would be to odin back to stock and start fresh. I did have one fc for android.processes.acore but I can't remember what I did to cause or replicate it. The only thing I'm having trouble with now that I rerooted the phone is that I cannot get back into CWR. I flashed the latest version and was able to get in to flash gc and everything else but now when I try to get in it locks up on the samsung logo.
EDIT: I wasn't able to get past the Samsung logo no matter what I tried. I ended up having to odin back and start fresh....again.

Fixing sd ext problem

Whenever i go into cwm, it displays "sd ext not found. But voodoo is enabled and says ext on. I got this problem after i had to format my sd card. I believe this error has to do with my responsiveness of my phone as well. Even with aldrenaline shot my games lag noticably. How can i fix this error. Should i format my sd and delete all the partitions?

ok. can you follow fb's gb starter pack and start from scratch? make sure you wipe your sd card. before you do any of that, though, can you disable voodoo.
once you are back up and running on bsgs4g ki3, with busybox flashed and voodoo enabled, go into your system/etc folder and delete the init.d folder. now flash the adrenaline shot. let the phone sit for 10 min or so after you reboot. now go into tegrak and make sure you enable it at boot. go into optimizations and load everything according to dsextons values. makes you are on ondemand governor and deadline scheduler. now reboot after it watches stability. after all of that, let me know how it goes.

On beautiful you may not want to flash the adrenaline series tweaks, Ravers ROM may not play nicely with it.
You could always reflash beautiful(just wipe caches and flash), without losing any data and see if your performance improves then wait for raver to update the ROM
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
To address your low quad scores, I hope you let your ROM sit for a good 10-15 minutes after flashing. Flashing a ROM will wipe your dalvik cache. You MUST let that rebuilt after a flash, which is why you need to wait a bit afterwards.
I tried playing with a ROM without getting the dalvik cache rebuilt, and I just got choppy performance with low Quadrant scores.
If this might be the case, go into CWM > advanced > wipe dalvik cache > reboot phone. Let your phone sit for 10-15 minutes and DO NOT touch anything.

I don't think you need to worry about the E:unknown volume for path [sd-ext]. There are actually a bunch of threads regarding it. As far as your ROM acting funny -- try the standard:
Wipe Cache Partition
Wipe (yes it is wiped even with the error)
Fix Permissions
Reboot and let phone sit 10 mins to rebuild caches.
If that doesn't work....
Factory wipe and reflash ROM.
Well ive tryed all that and more, the last rom didnt have any of these problems. Now i noticed the phone getting hot so i installed setcpu, and the cpu isnt scaling, it just sits at 1000mhz , if i set max at 200mhz the phone cools off and charges much faster. I think its a kernel issue, why it is happening to some and not others i dont know. Do you know of any good kernels i could try? One that O/C's?

What ROM are you on? If you are on Valhalla Black - people are OCing with that. Sometimes you need to start fresh man. Flash to complete KJ6 stock, factory reset, wipe all caches and start over. Sometimes even reflash stock twice to make sure you get all the gremlins off the phone.
I am on Valhalla Black - rc3.1 - and I have not had a SINGLE issue. A lot of people haven't had any issues. But I flashed from stock... hmmmm.
Maybe try it. Otherwise I defer to somebody else to help you. Consider hitting thanks!
BTW I get the same error when wiping dalvik. But it still wipes it and no big deal.

Not me... I don't feel like I need it. The ROM is flawless as far as I am concerned. But I have read posts from others saying they have overclocked.

If you want to overclock just use tegrak paid. I have OC'd on this and it works fine. No heat issues other than what you would expect.

[Q] help with infinity rom.....

i have been having issues using the infinity rom when multitasking. for example when i am using pandora thats all i can do. if i try browsing or anything while on pandora my phone freezes and restarts. and everytime i try to overclock it to 1.3ghz it freezes and restarts as well.. this is the process i am using to flash this rom.
1. coming from teawstock v1.4 (latest build), pb&j kernel, tweakstock is already ext4... right.. but thanks to imnuts, he provided the proper conversion tools needed in case i were to be RFS... lol, thanks buddy for this rom in advance. i have flashed everything available for this phone and your rom is by far my favorite... hahaha. i will post a screen capture of my quadrant standard to show you how much ive tweaked my ****.. lol. i think my last benchmark was around 2360...
2. data foctory reset/ wipe cache/ dalvik
3.mount system
4.flash rom/TSM parts, love the TSM parts by the way!!!!!

@stebomurkn420 & @nailem
I guess I can't tell you to use the non-tsm rom then eh? I find TSM to be too buggy and cause more problems than extra goodies, plus theming can edit just about any part of your phone on any Rom, icons, statusbar, you name it.
Anyway whenever I flash a new rom I always revert back to stock with the charge.pit file to make absolutely sure that my partitions are set up correctly. A little more time consuming than just wiping data but I have never had an issue jumping from one Rom to the other.
To make sure I was back to ext4 since I was flashing from stock straight into InfinityRom, I flashed Imosey's kernel (which has lagfix) and autoconverted me to ext4, then once my phone booted with ext4 I just wiped and flashed PB&J kernel again. Nice and quick, flashing the kernels to get me to ext4 took all of about 3 minutes. Now I have InfinityRom, PB&J (w/ the awesome advanced sound tweaks), and no lag. If you wanna give it a shot I can help shoot you some links for all the files I mentioned.
Also be careful not to OC too high, there is a point of diminishing returns.
cliMACtic, yes that would be great. I found the updated infinity rom but have never returned my phone to stock. Links and a little instructions would help. Thank you

Proper way to format to EXT4?

I have been running Tweaked 2.0 for a week or so, and it's great, but I continue to get hotboots. I'm not running anything else...no tweaks, no other kernels, just plain ROM...and still get a couple of hotboots a day.
I wanted to try the FP1 PBJ kernel, but that requires EXT4 for wifi to work.
I have the ext4_formatter_all.zip utility on my sd card, I booted to recovery, ran the formatter, reflashed Tweaked 2.0, then restarted.
My phone hangs on the Samsung logo.
The only method I found of getting it working again is go back to stock, take the OTA, then put Tweaked back on it.
So, I am doing this wrong? I used to be formatted for EXT4 in other ROMs, but I can't seem to get it to work now.
Not sure where you heard that PBJ requires ext4 for wifi to work because it doesn't.
Running the formatter does exactly what is says. It formats the partitions. There is nothing at all in them when it's done. You have to run the formatter, then reflash the rom and kernel.
FWIW, PBJ will likely do nothing at all to fix your hotboots. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you're running a lockscreen with music controls available. If you run the Circles lockscreen, it will probably fix your hotboot situation.
I must be mixing things up with respect to file system format, pbj kernel and wifi. My bad.
My steps are the same as you listed except I was not flashing the pbj kernel after flashing the ROM. I thought I could do that from Tweaktools. So I was trying to let the phone boot up, was gonna check that everything was EXT4, then install pbj.
But now that I think about it, are you saying the only way to use EXT4 with Tweaked 2.0 is to have the pbj kernel installed? If so, then that's my answer. If not, then I still don't understand why my phone won't boot after I format ext4/flash ROM.

Because running the formatter reformats the filesystem where the kernel is stored as well. Tweaked doesn't ship a kernel at all, so if you just flash it, you don't have a kernel on your phone at all.
...and regarding the hotboots, yeah I didn't expect the new kernel would help there. I figured if I'm gonna continue to get hotboots, I might as well see if I can get better performance out of it.
I don't use any lockscreens. I have it disabled entirely. And I rarely play music on my phone...Pandora once in a while. Maybe disabling lockscreens contributes to hotboots too?

have you seen dwitherell's hotboot fix in the TS 2.0 thread? there are several posts about hotboots there (mostly about changing the heapsize from 64 to 80 or 96 I believe).
I read on another forum that it could be attributed to an app or two that you are running (maybe even have that app installed on your SDCard - trying moving them to your phone's internal memory one by one and see if the problem persists).
regarding re-partitioning:
so here's what I think you need to do:
- download and install terminal emulater
- find out if you are RFS or EXT4 (if RFS, proceed to next step)
- download and CWM IMO's kernel (after mounting, wiping cache/dalvik)
- re-boot
- re-install the dirty PBJ kernel via CWM (after mounting, wiping cache/dalvik)
I have not tested this yet - as I have no real need to outside of just curiousity. so if you want to take the plunge, go for it. but I'm not responsible for what happens....
I tried the heapsize tweaks, stepping up the heapsize over the course of a few days. I think it might have reduced the hotboots a little (like 3-4 boots over a 2 day period instead of 4-5 boots.) I will start investigating my apps, though most are already installed on the sd card.
I'm formatting to EXT4 right now...fingers crossed!
Update: all good now! Thanks Shrike!!
Here's what I did when I moved to FP1:
1. Flash FP1 ROM of choice, and then flash imoseyon's Voodoo kernel (the fact that wifi breaks on this kernel doesn't matter)
2. Boot phone. Wait as the phone reformats as ext4 (saves your data too!)
3. Once phone starts up, boot back into CWM and then flash the FP1 PBJ. This will fix your wifi.

Thanks for the suggestion kv. I was hoping my question would result in the documentation in one place of the the methods to correctly format to ext4. Now we have that (assuming yours is correct LOL!) Of course it was my own dumb oversight that Tweaked 2.0 didn't come with a kernel that caused all my problems in the first place.
I opted for the ext4 formatter route mainly because of the hotboots I get with this ROM. I figured, if I'm gonna make changes, make the ones with as clean an install as possible...and the formatter wipes everything.
Fyi, switched over to ext4. Worked great except that my phone was stuck at the boot screen for 40 minutes. A simple power off and power back on and I was good. So the steps I outlined above worked (for me). But curious to see if anyone else got stuck at the boot screen after the repartitioning.
tappin' that....
Yep, same thing happened to me. Got stuck on the first boot after flashing. Powered off, restarted, good to go.
And on a side note, I've had zero hotboots since going to EXT4 and PBJ FP1. Was getting 3-4 a day before that.
actually just got my first hotboot - tried taking a pic with the Camera Zoom FX, and when saving the pic, it did a hotboot.... tried it again, and it was fine - so I don't think it was a direct result of the ROM or anything else...
Help - rfs or EXT4

I got stuck too on the reboot. I didn't wait 40 minutes though. Restarted after 5 minutes. Sometimes you just know when to pull the plug.
