Just picked up my G2X yesterday via upgrade at Costco. Luckly I have 90 days to do an exchange so hopefully they come out with a fixed batch...though the only gripe I have is the light leakage at the top.

Three posts same thing....

Opinions on refurb Captivate

Hi, I'm wondering, due to the many shutdown issues people have even with new Captivates, would it be safe to get a refurb Captivate? Even doing exchanges with a refurb would be harder as it cannot be done in a store. And due to the nature of the Captivate, would there be a higher chance that refurbs were those previously having shutdown issues and exchanging would likely make no difference?
I've got a Refurb Captivate and I haven't had a single issue with it. I even upgraded it to Cog 2.3b6 and love it.
Just wish GPS worked better and it had a Bluetooth stack that could handle a wii remote. Of course that isn't a refurb issue, anyway. My refurb works perfectly.
Oh alright. I know someone who had the shutdowns with a refurb Captivate, though not serious. Exchanging refurbs is a problem because stock is so rare. Definitely not as convenient as those who bought from the store and have exchanged over and over. I read on some threads here that flashing Cog fixed the shutdowns for some. Is it possible?

I ordered a refurb and it did have the shutdown issue. The warranty department told me I needed to ship the old unit back, but tell them to send the new unit to you first.
It was a pain to get a new one, but the new one worked perfectly. Luck of the draw, I guess.
Very annoying with the refurbs
I am on my 4th captivate refurb. AT&T did a one time courtesy and swapped my Bold 9700 for a Captivate refurb. The screen was all scratched so they sent me another one. That issue was cosmetic so I'm not making a big deal about it. The second one they sent me was great for about 2 weeks, after it would shut off randomly with stock and Cog 2.1.6 stable. I brought that to a service center and got it replaced. This one had a problem with the speaker in the front and the back. It was all static and very irritating. Just got my last one a couple of days ago and I have not had a problem yet. Knock knock knock...
Once you're original phone s*#ts the bed, its bad news for you because AT&T/Samsungs quality control of the refurb units is poor at best. But they let you keep swapping them out until you find a good one so just hope for the best.
At the end of the day going to android was the best move I have made yet.

I have a refurb and have had no issues aside from unreliable GPS.
I bought a refurb and the first one I got had the random shutdown issues right out of the box. The first night I charged it, the phone was off in the morning and it only got worse from there. I got that replaced and have been good for about two months with it other than the GPS not tracking well.
I have a refurb captivate that worka great. The gps like all the others have issues as mine always say i am 30 meters from my actual location, but other than that its great.
The only real issue i have with it is getting used to the keyboard. I use an iphone 4 for my primary phobe and the captivate for a business phone and switching between the two is slighty awkward, but i will adjust eventually.
The leaked 2.2 froyo rom always is great on the phone.

Hmm.. what do you mean when you say they let you swap them out until you find a good one? Isn't it only for 30 days and the warranty a max of 90 days? And you're supposed to ship it back if you got it online? Is it possible to get a replacement from a service center?
My refurb Captivate works great. It's only given me one unexpected shutoff since I got it in October.
My refurb is working well. The only time it shuts off randomly is if I leave the USB door open. My GPS works well as well.
I must have lucked out, because my refurb came in perfect condition 2 months ago and hasn't had any shut down issues (knock on wood). Plus you can't beat the $50 price tag for a phone of this caliber.

Sure I can, mine was free since I have an employee discount on my account.
Warranty is a year for new devices and 90 days for refurb. Once you get a refurb your warranty is 90 every time you get a new refurb. And yes you can go to an ATT Service Center and get it swapped out. I have not had an issue getting replacements.
I was going to post the link but I can't so PM me for the att answer website for the list of service centers.

Broken my Tbolt in less then 24 hours!! LOL But not all is bad!

I got my phone on Friday, broke the screen on Saturday. It gets better! I didnt have a upgrade so when i bought the phone, i bought it from a friend then switched to my account. Well the rep had trouble adding my TEC insurance to the account. So I HAD NO INSURANCE!!! Luckily i was able to get insurance added, and my phone is being replaced! I had to pay $99 for a replacement, but they give you another 32g card, so i guess its not AS BAD, but still....OUCH!!!!!

How did you break the screen? I hope you dropped it or something. I hope my screen isn't fragile. Still waiting on my invisiSHIELD.

Yeah, a drunk friend coincidently hit my hand as i was bringing it up to answer it, it hit the ground just right i guess, cracked the screen :-(
They have something in the mall, where they apply this "heat shrink" style protective coating to the phone, supposed to be super strong, i might try that

Yes Asurion(vzw insurence company) cuts you off after your 2nd claim in a 12 month period, but once it has been over a year since the first replacement you are fine.

haha well hey i'm only 14 here...
old MT4G died because of the eMMC chip failure...
haha wowwww we im gonna try tommorow and hpe i wont need to pay them for a new phone. wish me luck D
Are you gonna try to use the regular warranty? Or are you talking about the warranty that you pay for monthly where you need to pay a 130$ deductible for a new phone?
Because that looks pretty badly damaged. It would suck if they got it and then charged your account because it was damaged. I'm no sure what there policy on that is.
i was gonna try with the regular warranty

Thanks. I got mine in early November. I have less than a month to replicate the fuzzy earpiece consistently I guess. Do I need to prove to the rep in the store that it's not working? I've never done a warranty exchange on a phone.

No, dial 611 on your phone. That will take you directly to TMO. Whent he automated machine asks you your reason for calling, just say "CANCEL." That will take you directly to cusotmer service.
Explain your problem and they'll do an exchange for you.
I've done it like 6 times, lol.

[Q] At&t or htc for warranty?

So I just went to the att store and said they couldn't do anything. She said I can call att and file a warranty claim but i wanted to know if I would have more luck through htc. So which one do you think I should do?

It says I have a signal but I cant do anything. They wouldn't do anything because it was dropped once so there's a scuff on the corner. Even though it started weeks after that.

I will be around the service center next saturday. What were the prices like? Htc estimated $130-356 so I'm wanting the cheapest if possible. Thanks
my gf swiped her hand around and my phone got knocked out of my hand. it hit the corner and literally bounced. you can't really notice any external damage but ever since i have been getting some network problems. i'm trying to be in denial and say it is CM10 bugs. i really don't want to service my phone, specially if they will complain about bootloader being relocked or sending me a 2.20 replacement. also the lower part of the display glass wasn't ever sealed properly, it makes a creaking sound when twisting the phone gently at the bottom.

I am not sure about the prices there, they always exchanged my phones for me and they usually keep phones on hand to swap defects out.

T-Mobile Exchanges

I was told I cannot exchange my Xperia Z3 at a store even if I ordered there because it came by mail. Call TMO customer care and tell them to cross ship you a new one. They will ask if you want warranty or new one. Say you want brand new, if they ask for $50 restocking refuse it like I did and they will agree after a few mins. They will refund your tax charge and charge it again as a fresh order.
Having said that, it is on backorder at TMO, waiting for tracking still. I re ordered a new one yesterday.
Just wanted to let people know so they do not get charged extra or get a refurbished device.

Called T-Mobile, the box it came in was all dented up and the bottom corner of the phone is raised up. Also have an issue with terrible battery life and calls just failing constantly ( I live in a total LTE area for T-Mobile)
They are overnighting me a new one after I called support, got transferred 3 times but was within my "buyers remorse period" so I will be sent a brand new phone.
Got a confirmation that the re-order was processed just waiting on shipping info.

Good you got that over with, I just gave mine to UPS and returned home. I had to calmly argue with the lady rep on TMO for like 5 minutes to forgoe stocking charges as its not our fault if a brand new device is defective. She talked to her manager said they would waive it. Make sure to check on that.

They can do cross shipping, meaning they will send you one before you send yours, however the phone is on backorder again so you will have to ship yours out otherwise you will get double charged if it does not reach in time. This is because it is considered a return and repurchase.
I called and the lady was very nice ( a first) She said that she would send me and email with the new phone info within 24 hours and that she understood my frustration. She also said that they would change me the taxes for the new phone but credit me the taxes for the first one No mention of a restocking fee or the phone being backordered. So lets hope TMo doesn't find a way to screw this one up!

Overnight shipping charge, I got that too.
To all shipping phones back to t-mobile. Make sure you keep all tracking info. You should also add insurance. I returned an iphone 6 plus a month ago and they still have not found it. I am arguing with them on the eip which they charge me monthly even though i do not have the phone. Again, make sure you track add insurance and signature before shipping back.

I am sending back the original phone I pre-ordered. TMO sent me a shipping label and all I have to do is drop it off at UPS. Instead of having them ship me a new one I just went into the store and bought a new one. They will refund me the charges of the first phone when they receive it in the mail. What I noticed in doing this however is that the phone I purchased in store was of much better quality. The cosmetics of the phone were seamless, no light leaks, no purple camera and the battery seems to last WAY longer than it did on the one I pre-ordered. This makes me wonder if TMO rushed manufacturing the Pre-order devices and that is why there are so many issues with them? Either way, I am SOO happy I went and bought a new one in store. It's fabulous!!
