Repository for droid files - General Topics

I like to tinker with my Droid X. Sometimes it is difficult to find files - rsdlite and SBF's come to mind - and when you do find them, they are on megaupload or a free file sharing network.
Here is what I am trying to find out:
Is there a need for a dedicated droid file repository?
What are the legalities?
Would people use it?
My wife and son have iPhones and there are numerous repositories "repos" they are called. Why no equivalent for the droids?
As far as the legalities, it does not seem to be a concern as it is legal to root/jailbreak your device.
SO why or why not to have a droid file repository.
Just a simple site to host files in one spot.

ROM makers: Want a different host for your files?

For the last 6 months I've been hosting files for developers in the Eris section. I made the site to people wouldn't have to use all that MultiUpload crap, got sick of the waiting 60 seconds to download a file, entering a verification code, etc etc.
Anyways, the site's worked well. You can direct link to your files, upload everything via a simple web interface.
I just thought I'd offer the site to developers in other forums now.
http://android.grdlock.net
Anyways, if you're interested in using it to host your files, just make a username on the site real quick, shoot me a PM, and I'll give it upload permissions.
And no, this isn't an advertisement or anything. People in the Eris section have just liked using the website over MultiUpload, so I thought I'd offer to let other people use my bandwidth as well.
I can jump in on this as well - I have unlimited bandwidth so if you need another mirror, let me know and ill set you up on my server.

Looking for the source

A couple of weeks ago I bought myself my first android device (a cheap LG GT540), and since then I've been playing a lot with it.
Noticed that android hackers community is quite big and there are lots of tools which can do kind of anything, but sadly I'm kind of disappointed because I'm having some issues in understanding HOW things work: in order to root my device, install custom ROMs, resize partitions and so on, I had to use a few tools that I have no idea of what they're doing.
To me it looks like that in this forums it's much easier to find a GUI that does everything you need, rather than understanding what needs to be done and how to do it. IMHO this is bad for a community of hackers.
In particular I'd like to understand how the following tools work (both for personal knowledge, and because some of these only work on windows, and I'd like to port it on Linux), and if available, I'd love to put my hands on their source code:
SwiftBootloaderBuilder: it's a tool used to resize flash partitions. I'm prone to think that it might just be a frontend for fastboot, but hum, the fastboot binary I own seems to be missing the capability of handling partitions...
KDZ: it's a tool to upgrade the firmware which I had to use in order to install on my device a custom ROM with fastboot enabled. How the heck does it work? This tool forced me to find and use a windows system to hack my GT540...
Android Developers is a great place to get started understanding how Android works. There you will find much of what you need to know to get a BASIC understanding of Android. If you follow the guides and advice you can create a basic apk that does little except teach you. CyanogenMod wiki is also a great place to learn. One thing about Android is that is is very much like Linux built for specific hardware. Many, and I do mean many, of the same principles apply to both systems. Digital signatures, ownership privileges, file permissions, compiling from source, git, gerrit, google code etc, are all things that a developer runs into everyday working with open source software of any kind. Go to every place I mentioned, sign up, and start asking more questions. Learn C++ and JAVA. Join freenode irc and find some friends who will answer questions while you learn. XDA is the least resource for the development community. XDA is the expression of ALL the other resources. I am new to this also, and have done what I suggest, except the programming languages, which I am working on. Use root explorer to look at your device file system. Ask the developers of the tools you mentioned to help you understand them. A LOT goes on behind the scenes, but it takes a little direction and determination. Cheers!

Motorola Add-on for Android SDK

Just a heads up for all of you folks with Motorola devices. I don't know if anyone has seen this yet but Google and Motorola Mobility have provided add-ons for the Android SDK that you can download within the SDK manager to help target Motorola Devices specifically and more accurately with device-specific emulators. The list of devices can be found here:
https://developer.motorola.com/docstools/tools/
When downloading the packages within the SDK Manager you will need to provide MOTODEV account verification, which if you do not have one it is free so shoot over to the MOTODEV site and register. I just thought this was exciting, being a Bionic user that likes to mess around with Apps, especially because of the LONG list of Moto devices that have add-ons now in the SDK such as the Razr, DROID4, ADMIRAL, Atrix 2, Photon, and various others....
Sorry for the late response... can you provide an updated link for motorola SDK add-on. The one you provided above is now redundant.

Sidekick 2 Squash File Developer Key Reverse Engineering

Hi everyone at XDA and Sidekick users.
Hopefully one of that reads this post, has had or is familiar with the *.sq Squash files, that were flashed to early Danger Sidekick models, particularly in my case at least, for flashing the developer Key. I have come into contact with a key on 5.x Lib version, but that key is in the form of a .JAR file. Even extracting the JAR file yields no precise match to these older squash files.
As my quest continues to restore internet capabilities in my interest to my phone, a dev-key would be the neatest way, as I could use the SDK to write apps that neglected dead Danger servers, and once again functioned properly. I do this with my love for the Sidekick 2.
So, anyone out there who still has access to a Squash dev-key file, please PM me. Or, if you have any knowledge that pertains, please contact me.
Thanks in advance,
You may want to search on these forums for a link to the old SDK if that might help. I also wonder if someone has a developer key someone for another phone. With that and the IMEI of the device it was intended for, you *MIGHT* be able to figure something out, but someone with more knowledge than myself would be able to tell you better. Maybe Orange808?

I can look over the contract again, but I am certain the dev contract forbids me. After they started really locking down the platform, I remember signing an agreement that is only rivaled by Apple's dev contract.
With that said, they handed out developer codes like candy in the early days (with no strings attached). I bet you can find another source.

Android File Host. My Website to collect every file for every phone and tablet.

Hello,
Ive coded a website to get a file or more files for every phone.
its hard on xda to get a overview for what is there and what can i do with this.
or for dev's or customer who know how something work but dont want to search every thread for a file ( like cwm, twrp, tweaks, or smth like that ).
on this site, you can choose the carrier, then the model and you get a list of file for exactly that phone.
http://host.androidfile.pfweb.eu/
take a look and you will see.
i also need more people who can help me. its hard to do everything on my own.
This site is new, so please dont say "there is nothing". We are always adding new files
planned features :
XDA thread direct link
Dropbox up/download
Tablet support!!
Search function
Support Tickets
FAQ
This looks very good, can you also add the following models:
Galaxy Note 1
Galaxy S2
Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4
i will add everything i get for all phones and tablets.
but i have to collect those files manually, so it would be nice if you can send me some files with the XDA forum thread url.
thanks
cool
This is kinda cool but looks impossible. You will need a lot of help to get keep this updated with all the latest files. Wouldn't you consider a url directory to where the devs host their own files instead? What would be cool is being able to filter out the specifics of what you're looking for so you can easily the link to their official download. For example, you could find the urls to the official stock rom, pacman rom, and faux123 kernel for the moto g by clicking a few checkboxes all in a few seconds. Right now you have to sift through a ton of forum pages which is slow and gets old fast. Food for thought...
