[Q] HOW TO connect phone to TF over wifi? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a lot of WiFi server apps in the market, e.g. Swiftp (swift ftp).
The app should be run on either the TF or your android phone (some of these things work on iphones too i think) and then you either type in an http192.168.1.3:8080 or similar into the web browser to connect to the other device as a file manager OR,
you get given an FTP:// address by the app which you need an FTP client for on your device (again there are plenty in the market e.g AndFtp).
This should allow you to use WIFI to browse the other device's files and transfer things between them.
I have my phone and TF connected to my home router, one is 192.168.1.3 the other is 192.168.1.6 for the IP's but whatever apps i try or anything I do I cannot get them to connect to each other. I just get "host not found" or "connection error".
How can I get this to work?????

Remote Desktop Cannot Connect

Hello all:
(first of all, I apologize for the double post, I erred and replied to a thread in the diamond forum)
I'm having problems getting my remote desktop to work. Been trying to connect since I picked up my Fuze on the 11th.
I have three different computers that I can successfully administer via my desktop. I've tried using 3G to connect, no success. I've tried using Wi-fi to connect, no success. I've used local computer names, IP addresses, properly forwarded ports --
It has to be a setting I'm missing on the phone. Any ideas? TIA
What version of Windows are you trying to connect to? Do you have a Firewall? And have you done the port forwarding on the router?
But the only options you need is Computer: IP Address and the user name and password. Use a Domain if you are connecting to PCs on a domain. Also when I logged in not using 16bit color under options the PC was almost unusable.
My attempts
The things I have tried since my post:
1) attempting to connect to Windows Server 2003 machine, non-local. Used IP address with port, same IPort that works from my desktop. Left username/password blank -- filled them both in -- left the domain name blank -- filled it in. All failed. Get the error message with three possible causes listed. Connected to my home network via wifi, data connection disabled (sometimes causes problems with my internet browsing if they're both enabled)
2) attempted to connect to a local machine, running XP Pro. Again, tried all possible combinations of username/password completeness, no success. Using Wifi
My local router does have a firewall, and the remote router does as well. I can successfully navigate those using my desktop (or laptop, for that matter)
GTO: I appreciate the quick reply...thank you.

Okay its been awhile since I used 2k3 sever. Using 2k8 lately but are you trying to use Terminal Server? and if your using 2k3 and you have ISA enabled I know it can be a pain to do port forwarding with it. But let me get this stright. You have no issues using XPs Remote Desktop to log into the server machines Terminal Server/Remote Desktop? Here is an idea. Whatever port your running Terminal Server/Remote Desktop type the IP Address with a : and port. IE 192.168.0.1:3000
Also if you would like you can PM the IP address of one of the Machines and I will try from my phone that I know is working with my machine. I am pretty sure you don't need to end a user name or password and it will bring me up to the login screen or you can make a temp account. On also on the Win2k3 machine I am pretty sure you have to add the option to login with Terminal Server even if its the Administrator account.
I am able to connect to my local XP machine over wifi using the ip addy/no port. Hostname (DNS) connection attempt failed, though. My 2k3 server's power supply died or I would test that for you.
No special router config (port fwd) for my device had been done.
The fact that you can't get to your local box on your local network is where I'd start.
Local Network Issues
Thanks again to you both...
I think that might be the problem -- the local network setup. I can connect via wifi, and browse the web. However, I can't install a network printer using the WinMo app that's included, and I can't seem get to the local PC even when I use the local IP instead of the DNS name. I did check, I'm being issued an IP address by the router (obviously), but still no dice on anything relating to network based traffic.
Is there a way to ping using WinMo? I'd like to be able to use that start.
Cont..
Also, I've noticed that I don't get the same error each time. Depending on which machine I'm trying to connect to, it'll give me an error with either two or three options as to why it's not working. Trying to figure out what that's telling me.
As far as Terminal Services are concerned, when I connect from the desktop, I believe I'm using Remote Desktop there (honestly, I haven't been paying attention -- I just use whatever pops up when I type 'mstsc' from the Run dialog, lol), and I can connect to the 2003 server. However, I can't play with this anymore today, because apparently the server is down, and I won't be able to get to it till Monday.
I think I'm going to go play with the ATT proxy and see if that changes anything. I think mine is still enabled because I read that it might help with the GPS problems...
I have found some freeware app... pocketping 1.6 and microsoft has a network tool offering which I am not sure will work on WM6. I have no exp. with either tool on WM.
Can you get to your http/https router mgmt interface from the device? Check your router's client table? Does your router have any logging capabilities?
Sorry, more questions than answers.
Router
I am able to "dial" into the router from my phone -- it shows the HTCP4600 in the clients table with an IP of 192.168.2.108 ... all good.
My logging on the router was disabled, but now it is enabled. What should I be looking for?
I think i'll try the pocketping...
Now make sure inside of the router then you have all the correct ports forwarded.
It should be port 3999 to 3999 On UDP and TCP and then your PC ip behind the firewall.
Pocketping, JETCET Print 5, and success
Here's the update:
Discovered that by disabling the AT&T proxy on the Fuze, I was finally able to connect to my network printer -- the Fuze doesn't have the drivers for my printer, but that's another thread.
So I was able to make my first IN-Network contact. Installed pocketping 1.6, and it's a very useful tool. I'm able to successfully ping the computers on my network now that the proxy is disabled -- an voila...I can also connect to my laptop on my own network! The main trick was to use the network IP address and not the DNS name.
Thanks to both of you who helped out.

Remote Desktop & "Administrator" User Name?

When I go to set up RDP on my laptop, it asks for "Computer" & "User Name". Well I think I found my Computer's name - when you go to System and click the Remote tab, it displays: 'Full Computer Name' - so I *think* I'm set there (right?) My problem is that for "User Name", when click the Start button, at the top it says "Administrator". So when I fired up RDP on my phone and filled out the information, it came back with:
"Cannot connect. Likely reasons are: 1. Specified computer name or IP does not exist 2. A network error occured while establishing a connection"
I will say that I HAVE checked the Firewall Exception box that allows for Remote Access and I have also allowed users to connect via remote access through my System window on the Remote tab. What I HAVEN'T done, however, is anything in the way of port forwarding for 3389. I'm more than familiar with networking and working with routers, so that's not my issue. My issue is, if I'm supposed to forward a port to my IP address, how can I do that when all I can change is the last number:
http://img9.imageshack.us/my.php?image=portip4.jpg
1 - Is my user name being 'Administrator' a problem?
2 - How do I forward the ports, or work with this end of RDP? I've read about the DNS, but don't know exactly how to go about doing it.
I've been in my router before and changed some settings for the Xbox, so I don't think that has to do with DHCP on my local machine here, but correct me if I'm wrong. My question/problem is that this is set to "Automatic Configuration - DHCP"...
http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?image=configbz4.jpg
...is this a problem? Do I need to change this at all, as in, get in contact with my ISP and go through this setup? Furthermore, if I DO end up having to change this, will it affect anything else on my network? Some people just said they checked the exceptions and logged in without configuring a DNS, so I'm wondering exactly what all I have left to change?
When you try to connect to your computer or laptop from the internet you'll need your public IP address. (not your computer name)
Go yo http://www.whatismyip.com/ on your computer at home.
Second, on your router you have to forward port 3389 to the local ip address from your computer.
Then from outside your home network you start RDP and connect to your public IP address. Your router then will forward that connection to your computer/laptop.

**EDIT**
Perfect, got it down 100%. Although as a side note.. does anyone know of a way to make the resolution/colors better? It works fine and all, but the picture is just a bit distorted with the colors all off.
I use Remote Administrator and I have found it to be the best! It will also allow you to use your native resloution that is set on the host PC you are connecting to whereas RDP won't and if you are tying to view remote camera's like I do or anything that has a specific resolution required, RDP will fail where Remote Admin will not.
The latest version is v.3.0 and it's only like $30 or even less if I remember correctly. A search of your favorite file dispensing forum may find a test version to try out and if I remember correctly, Radmin lets you use it for 30 days before you have to buy the reg key.
My original version V2.1 was upgradeable to V3.0 for free and works for Vista and allows me to connect to my PC at home which I still have v2.1 on.
It's a great app, real small and FAST!
There's also VNC which is similar to Radmin, but lacks the hidden view only mode... Great for keeping an eye on what the kids are doing on the internet without them knowing you are watching!
Hope this helps...

remote desktop on WM?

So i have the HTC HD2 and want to use the remote desktop which is build in the phone. The problem is that i have no clue how to set up my pc.
Im running on windows xp home edition and using a router. I saw a tutorial for setting it up where he basically told me to open a port and it works. After doing that it didnt work and i suspect there are some things not explained in the tutorial... Can anyone help me out on this?
Will not work on XP Home.
Ah i kinda had that feeling, im trying the same thing on my laptop which is windows xp proffesional. But i still cant log in. I also enabled the "allow remote"
Have you activated "Allow remote assistance" or did you activate "Allow connections" ? The latter is the one you need. Also make sure you're in the list of allowed users.
Doing this off the top of my head, I'm using Vista and it's been a while since I've needed to go into those options in XP.
You must have a password set too, so if the computer boots up and goes straight to your desktop without you having to log in, you'll need to set a password.
To access your computer when on the same network (wifi) use the computer's IP address.
Get this by running cmd on the computer and type ipconfig (then hit return).
To access your computer via the internet (over the phone network) use the computer's external IP address.
Get this by going to whatsmyip.org
You'll also need to configure your router to forward TCP port 3389 to the computer's IP address (found via ipconfig as above).
The thing is, with most home broadband connections, your external IP address can change, so get around this problem by using dynamic DNS.
Some routers have a DDNS client built in, with a list of compatible DDNS services. Just go to one of those services' websites and sign up, often it's free. Pick an domain name to register, ie p03p.dyndns.org, and use that to connect rather than your external IP address.
Best to check you can connect via wifi first using the computer's internal IP address.
If that doesn't work, are you running a firewall?
If you don't have a 3rd party one like Symantec/Norton, then check the windows firewall - ensure the Remote Desktop exception is ticked, if it is, then disable the firewall, and also untick the network connections on the advanced tab (even though the windows firewall says it's disabled, don't expect it to know that!).
If you use a 3rd party firewall, then look into how you can add a rule for port 3389 (RDP)
One way to get around the issue of a dynamic IP address on the home PC is to use Himachi2....it's a super-simple way to create a tunnel to your home pc no matter what the ever-changing external IP address is, and they have a winmo client now too. You simply set up the host once on your home PC, and as long as you leave it running it's very easy to create the remote connection just like you're on the local network with the PC....then you just use Remote Desktop that way
I ticked both the allow options just to be sure. What i also did is go on my 2nd laptop which also has windows xp pro on it to try and connect to my 1st laptop which also didnt work.
I think the problem lies in the list of allowed user. When i get into that list i dont see anyone in it. I assume i have to add my 2nd laptop in that list in order to get this to work. I tried to look a bit arround but i dont know how to add someone to that list.

[Q] Files sharing & steaming meda

I recetly bought an Asus tf700t and I am having problems connecting it to other computers on the network wirelessly. What I woud like to do is connect it to my Windows XP machine that is acting as my file server (and hardwired to the router) so that I can stream movies or access documents (text/spreadsheets/etc). I have tried using ES File Explorer, Astro (with the add on), MyCloud (with Splashtop installed on the machine), MyNet, and SharesFinder.
SharesFinder has been the only app to see the other devices (all hardwired) to see any of the other computers. I have searched several forums and seen others with this problem, but all have very poor explanations of the solutions (I NEED step by step by step instructons apparently). Asus tech support was USELESS (telling me that it was a software problem) and Best Buy (where I bought the tablet) wants to charge me with no guarentee of a solution.
I would like to say that my network is setup correctly since I can stream and share files with other devices but since they are all hardwired I didn't know if that was part of my problem. The tablet can connect to the internet with no problems.
Any point in the right direction would be GREAT! (And if you include instructions PLEASE include LOTS of details!)
If it's just for streaming, have you tried BS Player Free? I use that to connect to my desktop and stream stuff.
All you really have to do is make sure the stuff you want to share IS shared and then put the local ip in BS Player Free. It works almost the exact same way for ES File Explorer as it does for BS Player. I think I followed this guide:
http://www.howtogeek.com/120882/how...ders-and-stream-videos-over-wi-fi-on-android/
Still no luck
No luck...I'm sharing a folder on a Windows7 machine and several on my WindowsXP server. The two Windows machines can "talk" to each other. My wife's work laptop (not sure of the OS) can connect to either machine. Both my Blu Ray player and set top media box can access and stream media from both.
Tech support swears it's a software issue or an issue with my router but I'm not even 5% sure that they are right. I have tried SEVERAL different apps and configurations with no luck. I don't beleive it's a compatability issue since I have read numerous forum posts/websites where people have their Asus tablet connecting to and sharing files with WindowsOS computers.
Should I call back tech support and have them send me a new tablet?
That sounds very strange... Do you have any other Android you can test it with? It seems like you have tried almost everything I can think of. The only thing left I can think of, is the way the folder is shared. Are you sure it is set to "everyone"?
That is all I can think of, sorry.
Thanks for your help..I think I'm going to call Asus and see if they'll warranty this one or buy it back. Too frustrated to want to continue messing with it.
I'd assume that Asus sees no defect here. If you install and run Overlook Fing, can you see the other devices in your network?
Overlook fing sees everythng but my apple devices...now what?

OK, that proves that it is indeed a software problem, that the tablet is not defective, and that your network configuration seems to be correct.
So if some app does not work as expected, state exactly what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead, including any error messages - maybe someone is then able to help you.
K...
1.) SharesFinder
Scan network (finds shares I am looking for)
Smb client Ip: (IP address of computer with files)
Username: (name I login to that computer with)
Password: (password)
failed to connect: 0.0.0.0<00>/(ip address I entered above)
2.) ES File Explorer
LAN Shares - scan - Nothing appears
If I manually enter LAN server - Domain: (blank)
Server: (IP address of computer with files)
Username: & Password: (Same as above)
Login failure. This may be cause by WiFi is off (Can connect to internet wirelessly), SMB server is out of network scope, The IP address is invalid, Blocked by the Firewall (have tried with all but the router's firewall off), SMB service is off
If I try as anonymous or guest or with a domain - same results
3.) MyNet
Please turn on DLNA-enabled devices within the same Wi-Fi network - I'm streaming to my Blu Ray with one as I type this but nothing shows up
4.) MyCloud
Pulls up Splashtop remote but no files, computers, or other network devices (I have installed and running)
5.) Overlook fing
This sees all my non-Apple network devices but not sure how I can connect using it
6.) Astro File Manager w/ SMB Module
Scan Local Network - No Windows shares found on network
7.) Teamviewer
Works for remote control of computer but not what I am looking to do
Still having issues...anybody have some ideas?
I can only tell you that I tried SharesFinder and ES File Explorer, and both work for me (with a Linux Samba server on the other side). Which firmware version are you on?
First, I would like to thank everyone for their help with my problem. I really appreciate it.
Last night I went home and re-evaluated my setup. Here is what I found:
My Windows7 desktop, WindowsXP desktop, Blu Ray, HP printer and Roku can all "talk" to each other and are hardwired to my Netgear router or switch connected to the router. I also have a WindowsXP laptop that can "talk" to the other computers, but only when hardwired to the router. All my wireless devices can connect to the internet, but cannot access network reseources or "talk" to the hardwired devices.
So, it looks like I have an issue with my wireless network setup. None of the desktops or printer have wireless cards. Do they need to have wireless cards in order to be able to connect with other wireless devices? Can I setup my router to handle this and use it as an access point for my wireless devices?

Dag...have you tried forgetting the network on the Asus and then establishing it again?
How about resetting the router - pulling the plug not a full reset.
That's about all I can think of....
I was having an issue where only the android devices (all wireless) COULD see my shared files/folders on a wired PC. Other wired/wireless PCs could NOT. Lucky for me just a reboot to that PC took care of the issue.

On your Netgear router, under wireless setup...."uncheck" wireless isolation & apply
You could use Plex, wich works really well :fingers-crossed:
Okay...now I feel stupid. Wireless isolation was checked on the wireless network my tablet was using to connect to my LAN. Thanks for the help!

WiFi File Transfer via an Ad Hoc Network

Transfer files via an Ad Hoc WiFi Network. Although 'Airdroid' , '3CX DroidDesktop 2' and other WiFi file transfer Apps require a routed connection to function, this method is akin to 'Wifi Direct' in that the device creates the network, the PC connects to that network, the device then 'serves' it's contents and the PC accesses those contents via a web browser.
Apps Needed
Fast File Transfer (Free)
X-plore (Free)
Step 1 - Establish an Ad Hoc Network Connection
1 - Open X-plore, select a file, select share, then select 'Fast File Transfer'.
2 - Configure a network name (SSID) + password for the Ad Hoc Network 'Fast File Transfer' creates.
Step 2 - Create a Bi-directional connection between your Android Device & PC
1 - Connect PC to the newly created network.
2 - Open X-plore and select 'Start Wi-Fi file sharing' to activate file transfer capabilities.
3 - Open a web browser and input the phone's location info provided by X-plore.
*NOTE: DO NOT ENGAGE 'FAST FILE TRANSFER' (with a probable location of 192.168.43.1:8080) BECAUSE THIS WILL CLOSE THE AD HOC NETWORK!!!!
Step 3 - Close the Connection + Disable the Ad Hoc Network
1 - Open X-plore and 'Stop' WiFi File Sharing.
2 - Exit 'Fast File Transfer' to terminate the 'Ad Hoc' network.
*'Fast File Transfer' retains Ad Hoc network configuration, no need to configure each time.
* This Ad Hoc network works for RDP as well. I use 'Jump Pro'. It's processor and RAM intensive, but works. I'm assuming there aren't any inherent limitations to the Ad Hoc network 'Fast File Transfer' creates, but I haven't gotten a VNC app to work. Worth a try.
* X-plore limits some file transfer capabilities without paid app (e.g. direct SDcard file transfer). This is frustrating, but the developer wants to drive some revenue; And for all it's functionality, the App is well worth it.
*This is not a WiFi Tethering with file transfer solution. Connecting to the Ad Hoc network DISABLES INTERNET. This is like connecting your device via a cable. It's also much more secure because your files do not pass though a router (thereby the internet) but directly from your PC and device (& vice versa).
Really helpful

Hi, I was interesting in this matter. Transfer big files between HTC One and PC.
But I have a problem with the fast file transfer, when I share a file the program shows this message:
NOT COMPATIBLE. It seems like your device does not have a valid WiFi Tethering ...
WTF??

Frustrating, I know.
I found and documented this hack before I had cell service. Once I activated my phone with Metro PCS they broke the function because I didn't get 'Tethering' as a paid option. They remotely disabled all built in Android tethering capabilities. Your carrier might block native Android tethering as well.
I haven't found a solution for this carrier violation yet. To reinstate the function would assuredly include low level coding, up to and including flashing the ROM. I only root my phone and don't flash the ROM because I don't think using CyanogenMod or another Mod is much better than my customized rooted stock Android, especially after 4.0 (ICS).
I can suggest using the AirDroid option for now. I'll look for another solution in the mean time. (At this point I just remove my sd card and transfer files that way. I know the HTC One doesn't have an sd card slot so this isn't an option for you. I'll do my best to find something)
when i reached step 2-2, i couldn't start Airdroid (as it needs internet connection) and Fast File Transfer had been already turned the connection off for tethering.....
any one have an idea!!!
it works dude. thanks.
Direct connection between phone and pc
Your method does work but i found 3CX DroidDesktop works much better and faster. Hope it helps.
