Hello all,
I'm planning to get a Samsung Sidekick 4g from the US and use it in India.
I'm having a doubt whether 3g would work in India.
Here's the info I collected.
Samsung Sidekick 4g - 3G Network HSDPA 1700 / 2100, HSDPA 2100
Airtel (Indian Service Provider) 3g Modem - Radio for 3G - HSDPA/UMTS 2100 MHz, receive diversity
http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
says...
India 3G 2100 BSNL / MTNL (Indian Service Providers)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UMTS_networks
says...
Airtel India 2100 Mhz
Some of the websites on the internet (http://www.google.com/support/forum...7d&hl=en&fid=3559be9dafc1e87d000482ea9e8003e2
http://blog.anands.net/2010/08/03/choosing-a-3g-phone-for-india
)
mention that only AT&T (3G 1900 Mhz) unlocked mobiles work in India and that T-Mobile unlocked mobiles do not work in India.
I'm in a lot of confusion as to whether the Sidekick would work on the 3g spectrum in India or not.
XDA is my final stop to get it clarified.
Please let me know.
Regards,
Sammy
could you finally get the answer to that question?
even I want the sidekick 4G badly
can I get some sort of a advice from you
Thank you Bro
Hi Chandrajit,
Samsung Sidekick 4g mobile is an awesome mobile. I bought it from US and unlocked it myself using the instructions posted in XDA forums. I love this mobile. The highlight is the sliding keypad and is unlike anything seen in any mobile before. Samsung Galaxy S specs are there and battery life is more than 1 day. It plays HD movies easily. Drawbacks are 3.2 mp camera and no flash. But these can be ignored actually.
Go for it. Let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Sammydude
hey sammydude,
1) for how much did you get the mobile in Rs
2) Does it work on 3G network now, which carrier
I stay in Mumbai, what about you
Hi Chandrajit,
I got it for 285$ on ebay.com. Came to 13.5 in INR.
Haven't checked 3g yet. Using with GPRS connection only.
Not worried about whether it will work on 3g or not. Because the phone is good in all other aspects! LED lights are superb and show missed calls, messages with different coloured lights. Jump keys to access fav apps. Spell Clock. Cool messaging app. Pleasing themes. I can go on and on!
I live in Hyderabad.
Regards,
sammydude
according to here http://worldtimezone.net/gsm.html
you have 900/1800 (not sure how correct that is)
more then likely though youll be able to access 2g, (thats all i have here in usa and it works fine for widgets and simple web browsing)
great phone though, specially after you get a Rom on it,
btw i paid 200USD or 10132 INR that was used though.
hey, thanks for the information you guys.
Now, the only one last thing I want to know is the audio quality through headphones
I couldn't get much info about the quality through bundled earphones & maybe ur experience with third party earphones/headphones
I plan to scrap my music player and carry all my music on this phone
so what is your verdict on the music quality?

mine never came with in headphones, (im assuming their not that great) i have used Sony MDR-XB700 and they sound pretty good, if you have voodoo control and turn up the amp they sound good(in comparison to my zune)
will internet work on it?
hey guys. i am fan of sidekick, i have used sidekick lx 2009 previously but the internet never worked for me. now i am thinking of buying 4g as the pprice is below 10k now.
so i want to know if the internet work of the people who have used it.
i am bangalore
Sidekick's 3G works fine in Russia, at 2100MHz. As you said above, "Airtel India 2100 Mhz" - look like it will be working for you too.
Sidekick uses AWS, i would stick with a att, as they use more common signals

Same here on AT&T Downtown Los Angeles, drops to HSPA+. Honestly to me, it doesn't really matter.
thats what its supposed to do.
when on a call, it goes into HSPA/3G, then after the call ends, LTE should kick back in.
thats how AT&T LTE works. there is no VOICE over LTE yet

LTE is a Data only network, No voice calls should go through it.
The LTE standard only supports packet switching with its all-IP network. Voice calls in GSM, UMTS and CDMA2000 are circuit switched, so with the adoption of LTE, carriers will have to re-engineer their voice call network. Three different approaches sprang up. Most major backers of LTE preferred and promoted VoLTE (Voice over LTE, an implementation of IP Multimedia Subsystem or IMS) from the beginning. The lack of software support in initial LTE devices as well as core network devices however led to a number of carriers promoting VoLGA (Voice over LTE Generic Access) as an interim solution.[13] The idea was to use the same principles as GAN (Generic Access Network, also known as UMA or Unlicensed Mobile Access), which defines the protocols through which a mobile handset can perform voice calls over a customer's private Internet connection, usually over wireless LAN. VoLGA however never gained much support, because VoLTE (IMS) promises much more flexible services, albeit at the cost of having to upgrade the entire voice call infrastructure. While the industry has seemingly standardized on VoLTE for the future, the demand for voice calls today has led LTE carriers to introduce CSFB (Circuit Switched Fallback) as a stopgap measure. When placing or receiving a voice call, LTE handsets will fall back to old 2G or 3G networks for the duration of the call.

I've searched, and have yet to find a definitive answer to this question, although my searches have revealed this to actually be a two-part question.
First, does anyone know where (if anywhere) there is a complete listing of all model numbers of the Note 10.1? It seems there are wildly different model numbers for those with 3G vs Wi-Fi only vs models for certain countries, etc.
Secondly, does the Note 10.1 have built-in cell phone voice calling capabilities? Obviously, this would not be possible on Wi-Fi only models, but of those that potentially have the hardware for voice calls, are there any models that can make voice calls without having to root the phone? And if so, are there any that can make voice calls without any additional software, using just a bluetooth earpiece, and presumably a SIM card, if using GSM networks?
Finally, are there any U.S. models that can make voice calls without rooting?
I've been looking for a tablet that would do voice calls right out of the box (once you have a plan from a compatible carrier) for quite some time now. So far, the only options I've seen are to purchase a non-US model of some tablet or other, or to root a US model that has the hardware, and go through a series of potentially difficult, potentially risky steps. Thus far, no tablet I've seen is attractive enough otherwise, to either deal with purchasing internationally, or to risk breaking the warranty to unlock this sort of feature. The Note 10.1 has SO much functionality, that if possible, I might be willing to take the risk or deal with international purchasing. I currently have a Toshiba Thrive, and love it, but even without voice calling, I'm seriously considering getting a Note, just for the S-pen. Voice calling would definitely put me over the tipping point.
Yes, you can make phone calls on the 3G model. The 3G model is the N8000.
It has phone, contacts and messaging apps on there as standard, just like a phone.
I don't know whether the 3G model is available in the U.S. The U.S. Samsung website seems to indicate it isn't.
You don't want a US carrier model anyways. Unlocked is the way to go. The N8000 is available in the US as unlocked model. You can use AT&T's non-smart phone data plan, $15 for unlimited data. The tablet itself has tethering built in and will not set off the tethering on the wrong plan notification from AT&T. The data is just as fast as faux G smartphone data plan. The US carrier models will be identified as a tablet and therefore you have to get their tiered data plan at a much more expensive plan and it's capped without tethering capability unless you get the 5GB plan.
Back to your original question, There are 4 models that I know of.
GT-N8000 WiFi+3G with cell phone capacity - works with AT&T's HSPA+ network.
GT-N8005 WiFi+3G Data only
GT-N8010 WiFi International version
GT-N8013 WiFi US Version
There's also a N8020 coming soon that has LTE built in. Not sure if it'll be compatible with North American LTE bands though.
Does anyone happen to have a list (or could find one) of all the various, different models of Galaxy Note 10.1 that are available, anywhere in the world? I can find the specs for most anything, if I just have all the model numbers.
There's basically just
GT-N8000 = wifi+3G
GT-N8010 = wifi only
GT-N8020 = wifi+3G w/LTE
Of those, the first two have been available since 2012. The third one is new.
Then within each model number you find handsets tailored to various countries, carriers and languages.
You forgot the N8013 - wifi only US model and the N8005(turkey Only?) - 3g but internet only - no calls, easily rectified by flashing an N8000 rom onto it apparently.
Does anyone know what bands each of these models use? Or alternately, does anyone know for sure, which of these models would be compatible with T-Mobile USA, and if the voice-calling model will work with T-Mobile's voice and 3G networks?

hi k1darkknight,
I am also interesting in figuring this out, but there is no clear answer anywhere yet. One of the ebay seller indicates N8000 would work with Tmobile, but data would only be Edge/2-g. But Tmobile has been doing stuff with its 1900mhz band so it might be different for some areas now???
Does anybody know??
Thanks!
I think all 3G models work on pretty much all networks these days.
At least, the N8000 works on 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 for UMTS according to gsmarena.
Just looked up what frequencies T-Mobile USA uses and it appears that use a 1700MHz band which is unusual and won't work with a normal N8000, but they also are using the 1900MHz band to some extent, which *will* work. You'd probably have to contact T-Mobile for clarification of just how much coverage their 1900MHz UMTS network gives,
Can GT-N8020 make GSM voice calls?

Can GT-N8020 make GSM voice calls?
I'm fairly sure it can. It's basically just an LTE enabled version of the N8000. The specs do quote a talk time for it.
That said, I don't own an LTE one.
GT-N8020 on AT&T in USA

I am getting one soon. Hope GSM calls work on AT&T in the USA. Also, hope the LTE works with AT&T LTE speeds in the USA.
8013 can send texts and make calls also over wifi with Google voice...

Flashed the N8005 with the N8000 rom and the phone/dial pad was activated but i still can't seem to make phones calls. all it says is "Call Ended" immediately i start the call
I remember reading about phones like Moto X (2014) and Droid Turbo not being able to use simultaneous voice and data unless they're in a VoLTE area since they don't have separate antennas like the Note 4 and many others others do.
Will Samsung Galaxy S6 have simultaneous voice and data no matter if it's in a VoLTE or 3G area?
Of course it will.Only on 3G or LTE (LTE switches back to 3G when a call is initiated), but it will.

I have no idea how it is done technically, but I do not imagine a high-end phone not allowing voice and data at the same time, unless it is called an iPhone, of course.
I mentioned Moto X (2014) and Droid Turbo in the OP. Those are both high end phones.
I also remember reading that having one antenna is what most manufactures will be going for in the near future when I was researching the Droid Turbo.
no phone will have two antennas anymore (i doubt anyway) because carriers are now moving towards Voice over LTE, so unless you're in a VoLTE area, no.

I'm going to still have my fingers crossed that we'll have two antennas in the S6 since the Note 4, which is a relatively recent phone from Samsung, had them incorporated.
Of course, if you're 100% sure (and perhaps have some type of proof?) that the S6 will only have one antenna and not be capable of simultaneous voice and data in a non-4G LTE area then I will take your word for it and be a sad puppy.

well it more or less depends on the carrier too. verizion seems to retain dual antennas on their phones, where as sprint on the other hand, not so much. the note 4 for example has dual radios, but iirc you can't use both on sprint at the same time, at least not until they fully enable volte.
the Note Edge came out at the same time as the Note 4 and iirc, it does not have dual antennas, so who knows..

That's the thing. Verizon's Moto X (2014) and Droid Turbo both have only one antenna... BUT as already discussed the Note 4 had retained dual antennas so I'm hopeful that Samsung did the same with the S6.
Unlikely that S6 can do SVLTE because the FCC test docs say as much and because VZW is moving toward VoLTE the need is not there. 5.1 Android has the VoLTE switch built in.
With GSM providers its a little different for example ATT will drop you to HSPA+ during a call to support Data/Voice if a call came to your phone.
Its a loss, yes, but for the OEMs it reduces cost and perhaps saves some battery life.
my 2 cents

Correct, no SVLTE. Says so right on the docs.
Definitely a shame, but that is the trend for CDMA carriers these days. HTC m9 is the same way.
Correct.
For example on my factory unlocked Galaxy Alpha 850M which is on Metro PCS/Tmobile
and has ALL the 3G and LTE Bands for Tmo - the phone says LTE in the Display but as soon as I make a call it drops to 3G H or H+ AND I do have simultaneous Voice and Data 98% of the time but NOT VoLTE.
Metro and Tmo Branded phones have VoLTE so you always have voice and data AND you have voice and LTE Data Simultaneously- this is Software enabled by or for the specific Carrier.
The one handicap of a factory unlocked phone no one ever mentions.....
Has anyone figured out how to get rid of that notification for when you can't use your data while talking on the phone? This happens always when I'm driving and using navigation (waze) and it's pretty annoying.

I am having a problem with my USCC S6 with this. They do not have voLTE yet. I was able to use data during calls with my S4 & S5 but I can't with the S6.
Any news on getting data and calls to work simultaneous? Very disappointed that this happen coming from the s4.. Is it physically impossible because of the hardware? I'm just starting my search on this issue so bare with me..
I searched this but was unable to find any matching scenario. This is typical CDMA carrier's simultaneous voice and data issue. The phone (Galaxy Note 5) was bough from Verizon and gets 4glte fine when on Verizon SIM card... even simultaneously. I wanted to use the phone with a AT&T sim and after changing APN settings it does work fine, but NO simultaneous voice and data. When I make a call the 4glte signal on the top status bar changes to 1x and there is no data. Once the call ends it switches to 4glte. I have activated Advanced calling with Ver sim card on and when the ATT sim is in it does show HD calling enabled. So what's wrong with the device?? Did anyone face same issue ? Any suggestion will be greatly APPRECIATED. btw I am w/o any contract plan with Verizon
FWIW my Note 5 switches from 4G LTE to 1x as soon as I start a call. Unless I enable advance calling then I have 4G while in a call. However if you ask me the call quality is lower when I have HD Voice enabled in the advance calling tab.

Same problem here. I do not want to use HD Voice but still want simultaneous voice and data. I had no issue with this on my Galaxy S5.
I just wish it would stop notifying me telling me I don't have data on a call.
This is very annoying. I didn't have to set this on my older note 3. But I also went ahead and got the advanced calling 1.0. I dont know why, its dumb but it is what it is.
The new phones don't have 2x radios like the old phones did, so can't do both simultaneously. That is why you have to use advanced calling to get both.
It is a physical limitation of the phone, nothing you can do about it.

Why doesn't Verizon switch to GSM? Would it mess up their coverage if they decided to do it? I'm being hypothetical. I know it would cost them way more than they would ever spend to do it.
In a sense they are all moving to the lte spectrum. Att is GSM. Verizon is cdma. Both are using similar lte at 700mhz. When using advance calling it's no longer using cdma 1x or GSM but lte using voip over lte data. Therefore you can use voice and data.

I ended up getting a AT&T Note 5 and sold the Verizon Note 5. Everything works fine (4G data and voice simultaneously) on this one. I believe it's a limitation of Verizon Note 5.

Yes. But that is true when you use a Verizon SIM card... with a ATT sim there is no way to get data on the Ver Note 5. So bottom line is on a Verizon Note 5 you must use a Verizon SIM card to have voice and data at the same time, with AC on. On a ATT Note 5 it works by default, no options to turn on and perfect quality.
