[Q] Note 10.1 models? Cell phone voice call capabilities? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched, and have yet to find a definitive answer to this question, although my searches have revealed this to actually be a two-part question.
First, does anyone know where (if anywhere) there is a complete listing of all model numbers of the Note 10.1? It seems there are wildly different model numbers for those with 3G vs Wi-Fi only vs models for certain countries, etc.
Secondly, does the Note 10.1 have built-in cell phone voice calling capabilities? Obviously, this would not be possible on Wi-Fi only models, but of those that potentially have the hardware for voice calls, are there any models that can make voice calls without having to root the phone? And if so, are there any that can make voice calls without any additional software, using just a bluetooth earpiece, and presumably a SIM card, if using GSM networks?
Finally, are there any U.S. models that can make voice calls without rooting?
I've been looking for a tablet that would do voice calls right out of the box (once you have a plan from a compatible carrier) for quite some time now. So far, the only options I've seen are to purchase a non-US model of some tablet or other, or to root a US model that has the hardware, and go through a series of potentially difficult, potentially risky steps. Thus far, no tablet I've seen is attractive enough otherwise, to either deal with purchasing internationally, or to risk breaking the warranty to unlock this sort of feature. The Note 10.1 has SO much functionality, that if possible, I might be willing to take the risk or deal with international purchasing. I currently have a Toshiba Thrive, and love it, but even without voice calling, I'm seriously considering getting a Note, just for the S-pen. Voice calling would definitely put me over the tipping point.

Yes, you can make phone calls on the 3G model. The 3G model is the N8000.
It has phone, contacts and messaging apps on there as standard, just like a phone.
I don't know whether the 3G model is available in the U.S. The U.S. Samsung website seems to indicate it isn't.

You don't want a US carrier model anyways. Unlocked is the way to go. The N8000 is available in the US as unlocked model. You can use AT&T's non-smart phone data plan, $15 for unlimited data. The tablet itself has tethering built in and will not set off the tethering on the wrong plan notification from AT&T. The data is just as fast as faux G smartphone data plan. The US carrier models will be identified as a tablet and therefore you have to get their tiered data plan at a much more expensive plan and it's capped without tethering capability unless you get the 5GB plan.
Back to your original question, There are 4 models that I know of.
GT-N8000 WiFi+3G with cell phone capacity - works with AT&T's HSPA+ network.
GT-N8005 WiFi+3G Data only
GT-N8010 WiFi International version
GT-N8013 WiFi US Version

There's also a N8020 coming soon that has LTE built in. Not sure if it'll be compatible with North American LTE bands though.

Does anyone happen to have a list (or could find one) of all the various, different models of Galaxy Note 10.1 that are available, anywhere in the world? I can find the specs for most anything, if I just have all the model numbers.

There's basically just
GT-N8000 = wifi+3G
GT-N8010 = wifi only
GT-N8020 = wifi+3G w/LTE
Of those, the first two have been available since 2012. The third one is new.
Then within each model number you find handsets tailored to various countries, carriers and languages.

You forgot the N8013 - wifi only US model and the N8005(turkey Only?) - 3g but internet only - no calls, easily rectified by flashing an N8000 rom onto it apparently.

Does anyone know what bands each of these models use? Or alternately, does anyone know for sure, which of these models would be compatible with T-Mobile USA, and if the voice-calling model will work with T-Mobile's voice and 3G networks?

hi k1darkknight,
I am also interesting in figuring this out, but there is no clear answer anywhere yet. One of the ebay seller indicates N8000 would work with Tmobile, but data would only be Edge/2-g. But Tmobile has been doing stuff with its 1900mhz band so it might be different for some areas now???
Does anybody know??
Thanks!

I think all 3G models work on pretty much all networks these days.
At least, the N8000 works on 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 for UMTS according to gsmarena.
Just looked up what frequencies T-Mobile USA uses and it appears that use a 1700MHz band which is unusual and won't work with a normal N8000, but they also are using the 1900MHz band to some extent, which *will* work. You'd probably have to contact T-Mobile for clarification of just how much coverage their 1900MHz UMTS network gives,

Can GT-N8020 make GSM voice calls?

I'm fairly sure it can. It's basically just an LTE enabled version of the N8000. The specs do quote a talk time for it.
That said, I don't own an LTE one.

I am getting one soon. Hope GSM calls work on AT&T in the USA. Also, hope the LTE works with AT&T LTE speeds in the USA.

8013 can send texts and make calls also over wifi with Google voice...
Sent from my GT-N8013

Flashed the N8005 with the N8000 rom and the phone/dial pad was activated but i still can't seem to make phones calls. all it says is "Call Ended" immediately i start the call

[Q] What US Carrier is the International GTab 7.0 plus (P6200) fully compatible with?

Sorry for what is probably a stupid question.
I am thinking of buying an International version of the 7.0 plus (P6200) but I'm having a hard time figuring out which US Carrier, if any, (AT&T, T-Moble or Verizon) is fully compatible with the table's supported frequencies.
Any help in pointing me to the carrier, that will allow the tablet to get 3g data and allow the tablet to make phone calls, would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if you are using a P6200 in the US, I would be interested in what carrier you use, your opinions of the carrier and your opinion of the tablet in general.
Thank you

Does no one know the answer or is the question so simple it is basic knowledge I should already know?
I'm not familar witht eh international model but I can tell you that it won't work with Sprint or Verizon as they are CDMA and not GSM. So that leaves T-Mobile and AT&T and it would depend upon what frequency the GTab7+ recieves, is it tri-band (850, 1800, 1900) or just a single band? AT&T uses 850/1900 MHz and T-Moblile 1900 MHz for 3G service. I would assume that it would be tri-band as are so called "world phones".
TMo also requires UMTS1700.
So almost surely it will NOT get 3G service on TMo. That's why there is a special Tmo variant.
Don't know about AT&T
Thank you for your reply!
Here are the listed frequencies for the tablet
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
it appears that it supports all the frequencies for AT&T and T-Mobile. I guess my confusion is I can't tell if the tablet will support 3G or just 2G (wouldn't be worth it if all I could get is 2G).

Ahh, that is what I was looking for. As much as I dislike them, seems I will need to go with AT&T if I get this tablet.
Thank you very much, both of you!
Sorry I got a little confused between tabs and phones. Verizon uses EV-DO (CDMA based) for 3G and AT&T is HSDPA (GSM based) at 1900 MHz. T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100 MHz for 3G.
warning, if you plan on using as phone and tab, at&t may want to make sure you are on tab data plan as well an it could be pricey for both.
with that being said Im using this on att with voice and unlimited grandfathered smartphone data. havent heard a word from them. I pray it stays this way. I will fight them for it.
conclusion: best mobile device in the world right now IMHO, until 7.7 comes out.
P6200 and iPhone SIM
Hi all,
just to make sure...
If I get the P6200, can I just pop my iPhone 3gs SIM with unlimited data plan (as long as I don't use it too much)?
I saw someone said they can do that on the 7.7 thread but I wanted to make sure the AT&T iPhone SIM isn't restricted to iPhones somehow.
Thanks
O
I have GT-P620900 from the Philippines and I am my tablet in the US now. I tested using at&t sim card and it works when I tried making a call using sim card (gsm).

Hi Neogrin,
With the posted frequencies:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
it will work perfectly for 3G (HSDPA/HSPA+) speeds only on AT&T. You should get 2-4 Mbps downlink, or maybe even more with a good signal on AT&T.
Unfortunately for T-Mobile (whom I also prefer over AT&T), it will only work on their 2G network, at EDGE speeds, which would be about 200 Kbps if you are lucky. Actually, EDGE speeds are good enough for twitter, facebook, and a bit of surfing, but would be frustratingly slow for YouTube or downloading apps.
The Tab 7plus will NOT work on Sprint or Verizon as their CDMA, LTE, and WiMax networks are different technology from GSM and HSDPA and thus not compatible.
Internationally, the 7plus should work on almost any 2G or 3G network, with maybe a few country exceptions here and there.
BTW if you decide to activate your 7plus on AT&T, I can share a bit of experience. I received a Tab 7.7 3G this week, with a similar frequency list to the 7plus. (Unfortunately, it also lacks the "AWS" 1700/2100 band for T-Mobile). I went to an AT&T store today to activate the 7.7 on a month-to-month data plan, of US$25 for 2GB with US$10 per each 1GB of overage. They were not able to assign the data plan in their system to me, because the 7.7 3G is not an AT&T device. The same will be true for your 7plus. What they did to get it to work was to take the IMEI number from one of the other tablets they had on display in the store - making sure it was an HSDPA tablet, and not an LTE one - and used that to activate my account. It took them a while to figure this out, but when they did, it worked. Once the account was activated, and the SIM card was in my 7.7, it found AT&T service and I immediately got a welcome text message. However, data did not yet work - for that I had to do one more thing, which the staff did not know about (but luckily I did).
Go into Settings->Wireless and Networks->Mobile Network Settings
In there is an "Access Point Names" item.
Click on this, and you should see some entries. If it's a new AT&T SIM, it likely says "Cingular 410" or "wap.cingular" or something. This would be correct for a phone, but does not work with tablet data plans, so we need to add the correct one.
Bring up the menu, and there should be a "New APN" option. Select this. In the form which comes up, in the "Name" field, enter "broadband" (one word, no caps, without the quotes). In the "APN" field, do the same - "broadband" one word, no caps, no quotes.
Once you've done this, hit the menu again, and there should be a "Save" option. Choose this, and it will take you back to the list of APNs. Now in the list there should be an APN item called "broadband" which you just created. Press the radio button to the far right of the broadband item. It should turn green.
Give the tablet a few seconds, or a minute, and data should start working!
Hope this helps.

[Q] GT-P6200 or 6200L ?

I'm getting some conflicting information and I know that I can get an accurate accounting right here...
I'm told that the P-6200 model will operate on ATT network but EDGE only speed and that I need the P-6200L model to get full 3G speeds.
Is this correct?
I'm on the same boat. Cannot decide which one to get.
I was told you can flash modem from p6200l to p6200 to enable 850mhz 3g. But I'm not so sure. Has anyone tried this?

Yes, the P6200L works with AT&T 3G and actually is the model sold on Amazon. I was looking on the AT&T Galaxy Tab 8.9 specs and it works with UMTS Triband,850/1900/2100MHz the same as P6200L.
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/SGH-I957ZKAATT-specs
Not even one merchant on Amazon has the 6200L. Each model is the straight up 6200! Show me where on Amazon I can get it!
and BTW. THIS is NOT a 6200L because I've already emailed the seller and asked. It is a mistake: amazon.com/Samsung-GT-P6200-P6200L-GALAXY-Tab/dp/B007I5E3IK Put a www in front of amazon for the link
Look at this comment from a guy who bought the tablet:
" I bought this tablet because I thought it was model GT-P6200 as that is what the title says. In reality, it was GT-P6200L which has a few important differences. The first is that it did NOT use 3G on the T-Mobile network. Maybe it does on other networks. Perhaps "Unlocked World Tablet PC" was the code-phrase that should have warned me. "
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-GT-P6200-7-0-dual-core-Honeycomb/dp/B00746GVHY/ref=pd_cp_cps_0
I'll call them. And I don't care about T-Mobile, just ATT. But now I wonder: do they make a quad-band variant? One that does 850 & 900?
Yes, you should call because on that link you can see that the specs of 3G Bands are 850 / 1900 / 2100.
So, did you get the information if it is the P6200L?
I called T-Mobile, today. I have the 6200L. T-Mobile started offering unlimited 3G/4G for $20 a month, so I signed up. Turns out that I can only use Edge with this model when using T-Mobile. This is what the T-Mobile tech rep told me, anyway.
I read the info above this post, so I want to confirm. Does GT-P6200L work with 3G/4G using T-Mobile, or not? If so, I need to make some config change. If not, I have to find a new model of tablet to use. I am not going to go back into the dark ages and settle with Edge. Why on Earth would T-Mobile do this, anyway?
No, T-Mobile uses 1.700MHz for 3G right now, but it should work on the new 1.900MHz frequency that T-Mobile is deploying, that's because they want the iPhone to be compatible with their 3G. For now only some regions are covered by the 1.900MHz 3G, here you can read more: http://www.gsmarena.com/tmobile_usa_running_1900mhz_3g_in_some_areas_iphones_invited-news-3537.php
4G will never work since it's the LTE technology and our tablet doesn't support it.

Verizon S GS3 on Straight Talk

Hi all,
With Verizon releasing officially, the update making its SGS3 Global ready atleast for voice as of now, a lot of discussion is happening right now about the Global capabilities.
FYI. I'm a good reader and explorer on hofo, androidforums and xda. So any guidance is highly appreciated
So here is my question.
I have a Verizon S GS3. It is brand new.
1. Can I use it with Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM ( T-Mobile has good coverage near my house ) after doing the rooting, unlocking, etc. etc all the technical stuff
2. If I unlock the phone, will it be truly global capable, I mean, can I use my S GS3 on any GSM Network in the World, even in the USA, with 3G Speeds? Did anyone use it in any Country with 4G LTE Speeds?
3. I know this is really a very very strange question. But after unlocking the S GS3, will it be working on the AT&T LTE Netowrk in the USA? My thinking is, if it working in the LTE Network in the USA, then it will work in other countries as well, where LTE Network is going to be available in the future. Sorry, I know this is a bit weird.
If You can please refer and threads or links, it is fine with me. I'm also looking and not depending only on the answers that I get from this thread. But looking for replies/guidance/links though.
Thank You.
hope this is the answers you are looking for

for Q1:yes you well be able to use any network... install any mod now most of them are already rooted and unlocked
for Q2:yes you can... all you need to ddo is to download a program called hiapn.. wipe the existing apn settings.. then auto detect and you are good to go 3g and hspa
Q3: yes it works thanks to the magic of hiapn software... but not many countrys use LTE .. usa canada japan and maybe few others
Verizon SGS3 on any GSM Carrier
Hi experts,
I have a small doubt here.
If the Verizon SGS3 can be used with any GSM Carrier around the world, then that means, the Verizon SGS3 can be used with AT&T or T-Mobile as well along with Verizon Network.
But the T-Mobile or AT&T Versions cannot be used on the Verizon's Network. Is that true?
I'm have got a traveling assignment coming up to Europe this Summer and I need to know what is the best possible solution out there before I leave.
Thank You.
Verizon's GS3 uses CDMA technology for the phone calling and data, as far as I know the SIM in the verizon version is only used for LTE.
From what I have read in forum posts, (this one in particular http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013647) if you pop in a SIM card, calling and texting should work. If you want data to work then you need to change some APNs around. Stock touchwiz does not allow this so you would need an app to do that. AOSP ROMs should have a way for you to edit APNs.
On the topic of getting 4G on any other network besides Verizon, that is fairly unlikely as they all use different technologies/ bands. Verizon has LTE, T-Mobile has HSPA+, not entirely sure what AT&T has but I think its also LTE.
This phone will take any SIM card cut to micro-size.
3G+ speeds depends on the frequency the carrier uses. The VZW GS3 uses the following radio frequencies after the JB update: GPRS/EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900); HSPA/UMTS (2100) [I had to search high and low to find this for my trip to China]
Each LTE carrier uses different radio frequencies, and global countries also use LTE frequencies different than the US ones. 4G is a very varied standard at the moment.
If you want fast internet on a non VZW carrier, it better have HSPA+, otherwise you are on 3G at best.
Right now, the only truely global phone is the iPhone5 on VZW, which supports 5 different LTE frequencies. Sad but true.
The US based SG3's dont even have the FM radio that the international versions have

Yeah, my girlfriend has a verizon s3 and with straight talk she is only on edge it never changes. It makes the phone nearly useless. Ive tried to talk her into letting me flash and unlock it but she isnt real interested in it. I dont even know forsure if unlocking the bootloader downgrading to 4.1.1 and using the att sim unlock method would work but I would assume that flashing it would allow you to at least get 3-4g. not?

That's plenty fast enough to do whatever task that'd be performed on a smartwatch. Heck, that's even fast enough for most smartphone duties.
T-Mobile charges $15/mo to those who don't have a smartphone line. If speed is that important to you, pay 3x more for 1 GB of high speed data to AT&T.

That is isnt fast enough for a smartphone especially when you are streaming full hd videos and what not. Thats why ive stuck with sprint they dont throttle my data or have to pay extra for full hd videos or have a hd day pass like tmobile does where you have to use an app to start hd streaming thats a joke. And the issue wasnt the price of the plan its the principal of the point that the full potential of the watch is not being used. You must have a flip phone if you think that speed is enough for a smartphone of today. Buffering most of the day.

But Sprint doesn't have the gear S3. And either way my T-Mobile plan is unlimited no throttling and it's $5 to add the data plan to the Gear S3 and will you be really watching HD video on a smartwatch? I wonder if the throttle is for all TMobile plans or just their new unlimited one plan

It's more complicated than that. The S3 uses an embedded SIM, so the carriers activate it electronically. Therefore it won't work with other wireless providers even on the same network, like MVNOs. So the AT&T version won't work on Cricket, for example. I'm not even sure they'll activate it on a GoPhone plan.

But if the watch is not locked to a carrier, could we not just take the watch to our carrier and ask them to activate the eSIM on the network?
I'm in the same boat as the OP but I'm thinking of ordering the LTE version from eBay which comes from South Korea. Apparently it is not carrier locked but I have no idea if I will be able to connect to the network of my local carrier.

Exactly, right now I only know the south Korean version is unlocked, but it seems to only support one band (b5 - 850 lte), so it doesn't even work on 3G networks here in brazil. The us versions from att and tmobile do support our 3g networks (850 and 2100), but they are not unlocked... Tough decision
According to the info that the eBay seller has listed, the Korean version supports the following bands:
LTE, 3G WCDMA, 3G UMTS: B1(2100), 4G LTE: B1(2100), B3(1800), B5(850)

But if the watch is not locked to a carrier, could we not just take the watch to our carrier and ask them to activate the eSIM on the network?
I'm in the same boat as the OP but I'm thinking of ordering the LTE version from eBay which comes from South Korea. Apparently it is not carrier locked but I have no idea if I will be able to connect to the network of my local carrier.

I'm late to the party and see there have been no posts in here for awhile. I didn't want to be an early adopter so I waited, I went through the Note 7 fiasco. Anyway, in order to save $50.00 I ordered the T-Mobile LTE version directly from Samsung and it's been on back-order for days!!! It's been out for months, I don't get it!! Most displeased!!!!

Guys, I know it's available in the US, but it's not unlocked and not the same bands, but I was wondering if the gear s3 was available in the LTE version in other countries, and maybe even unlocked like you can find the S2 now.

Rodrigo, I live in Argentina and purchased the AT&T LTE version from Best Buy in the USA.
Traditionally AT&T phones work well with the local LTE bands, so I imagine that if and when local carriers can work with embedded sim devices that they will be able to program mine.
By the way, I successfully unlocked my device by contacting AT&T.
So if in your country any local carrier works with the same LTE bands as AT&T, you can just get one from AT&T in the USA and unlock it.
Saludos

AT&T and T-Mobile same?

Are the T-mobile and AT&T Gear S3 devices the same model?
Well, the AT&T watch is model #SM-R765ADAAATT and the T-Mobile watch is model #SM-R765TDAATMB. Makes me think that they are not the same.
Pretty sure they're the exact same internally, but just programmed with respective carrier settings.
OK, thanks. Found a deal on a T-Mobile version. Not going to use the 3g part so I threw an offer on the T-Mobile version.
So, an ATT Samsung Gear S3 (Frontier, LTE version) device can perform flawless on TMobile network? can someone confirm this?
Thanks
Since the S3 uses an eSIM, I think they are restricted to their respective networks, regardless of hardware specifications.
But the phone and watch do not have to be on the same network.
