So does anyone have any idea what Viewsonic is doing? Currently we have 3588 as the latest, with a temporary release of 4349. Are they working on another release? Could it be GB or HC? I like the custom roms we get, but really the the feel of a well working stock. The new HC ROM is really cool, but no Netflix from what i have read.
well...from what I've read, the netflix issue is exactly that, a netflix issue. They've released versions for specific devices. some XDA devs have found workarounds, fixes, or builds that will enable it to work on certain roms. There's nothing that VS can do about getting Netflix to work on the G-Tablet.
As for VS updates and involvement...who knows? they've been quite vacant for quite some time. A grassroots effort pressured them to release 4349, then they pulled it, but the pressure was not kept up. Maybe they are working on something...but it would be nice if they told us what it was, huh?
I wouldn't get my hopes up for a HC release. GB might be a possibility, but my guess is they're just working out the bugs in 4349 and will hopefully release that soon and then they'll be done with it. The tablet didn't sell well, I can't see them pouring any more resources into it.

It didn't? Wasn't it the top seller on Amazon.com for a bit? I don't remember the Adam being able to brag about that...and they are rumored to be working on an official GB release, using essentially the SAME hardware that we use.
I've often said that it's sites like XDA that have made the manufacturers more lax in their support. Viewsonic never claimed that their out of the box firmware was spectacular. Devs here started messing with it and came up with usable Roms. VS was beaten by "amateurs." Now, our devs have figured out how to directly port Adam Roms to the G-Tablet. VS just needed to release a 1.2 bootloader so that it was possible for the devs to port them. They did this, then pulled it 24 hours later, AFTER the devs had it to work with. If Adam developers actually do release an official GB Rom (WITH video drivers from NVidea) then they, combined with the amateur G-Tab developers have done Viewsonics work FOR them...had nobody messed with the stock firmware, then VS would be under WAY more pressure to fix what is broken. as it is, amateurs are doing the work, for free...
SO....exactly why would VS spend time (more importantly MONEY) wokring on a project that has been taken over by amateur developers?

I'm not sure, but I don't doubt it. I also don't doubt that most of those sales were when the device was on clearance. That's what companies do when a product has failed.
Viewsonic, as far as I know, has never promised a GB or HC upgrade. I wasn't expecting one when I bought the tablet on Woot and nobody else should have either. I'll be happy if it happens, but I'm not expecting anything.
It may have been a crumb, but the 1.2 bl leak enabled our current version of HC... its only the lack of a .36 dev (from my understanding) that hinders further progress.
BTW, I got mine when it was still $408 shipped from Sears! YIKES!

They're moving on with their next product(s), and have put this tablet out of their minds. It got some buzz when firesaled under $300 and with some xda love, but clearly it's not a tablet that competes in any way with current tablets (other than having a tegra2 cpu.)
Hope for something good from the devs working off Adam or other "sister" tablets, because you're unlikely to see anything from VS.
NVidia has committed to yearly upgrades of the Tegra line. I don't recall when the Tegra2 was first released, but it has to be close to a year ago.

I am sure that they are now working feverishly on the Kal-El chip. If nVidia puts minimal support towards the Tegra2, ViewSonic is at their mercy.

I agree that they profit quite a bit from site like XDA,
in regard of the 1.2 bootloader we had it since February actually when Robeet found the leaked update but developper didn't know then that it was compatible with other brand of rom, they actually taught it was locked... but this doesn't change the fact that VS is doing nothing...

Of course it will. Google said "open source". Didn't say when, but they did say it was all going to be open source.
Drivers for various bits of hardware might be another story, but eventually Google release source for their stuff.

i agree they do but with honeycomb they still havent and the xooms been out how long now.
feb 17th right so that is almost 4 months and still no code.
I doubt they will release the source for it.
ICS will likely be the next big source drop from Google.
edit:
and I'm correct, taken from the roundtable this afternoon:
Q: When are we going to see a general release of Honeycomb?
A: Just for background: we did an internal trick to meet the Honeycomb schedule, we didn’t make it available for phones. So we held back the open sourcing of Honeycomb back so people wouldn’t put it on phones and have a crappy experience… but now that it is done. Ice Cream will be the next open source release and that will be this year.
Q4 of 2011 on Ice Cream Sandwich, per the information given this morning...

Ill just keep sleeping untill Google really releases something.
well that really does suck that there not going to release it. so im stuck on 2.2 or 2.3.4 on my tablet til then. thanks google. dont get me wrong the devs here have made this thing work great on 2.2 and 2.3.4 but i was really hoping for we are releasing the hc source code today.

From what I learned from the first wave of Honeycomb threads, if google decides to release source it will be 30 days from the release of the first device with Honeycomb on it. The official release of the Xoom was Feb. 24th and on Mar. 24th google confirmed that they will not release Honeycomb 3.0.
If that holds true, the Xoom should be getting the 3.1 update today so we should know if the HC 3.1 source code will be released around 6/10/11.

Can't say I'm not upset about this response. I can't really accept their reason being that people will put it on a phone and get a crappy experience. Of course people will try and if they get a crappy experience, so what? Let them try!
At the very least, they should release it for the people that *do* own an HC device and would like to make modifications. Just stick in a notice that it is tablet oriented and done. And if they're REALLY concerned about people putting it on phones, have an extra clause in caps: "NOT FOR PHONES". I can't imagine that being any worse than completely withholding the source.
What it comes down to is Google wishing this version never existed. But it's already out there! Pretending it doesn't exist just seems irresponsible.
All of this has made me wary of Google. I wouldn't be surprised to see more curve balls in the future of Android.

Who needs source code, when the devs really get going?
I guess not everyone is aware that there is a working HC ROM for the G-Tablet being fine-tuned now by Roebeet.
It just started with the Adam devs the other day and Roebeet has released 1.2 already with good bit of functionality (including audio and hardware acceleration.) There is also an Advent Vega port rolling.
Not going to bother with the links the threads are easy enough to find here and at SlateDroid.
I found a file today on Asus' website titled "Eee Pad Kernel Code for Android OS (V8.2.3.9) " in the transformers section. Since the transformer uses HC, could this file be useful to you here? Here's the link minus the hypertext prefix. (Had to do that to get around the spam alert.)
//usa.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/#download
On that page, choose android as the operating system, then expand the source code menu. I don't know jack about programming, so if it's useless, be gentle with me.

Google is walking a thin line right now, they are under pressure to fix the "fragmentation" of Android, especially by developers, but also from the competition aka the Apple iPhone folks (and their fans in the press), and at the same time they are under pressure from consumers and the open source crowds to stay as open as they have been. I am not taking sides, but they are in a precarious situation right now, who do they please the most, and who do they worry about the least, tough decisions. Then you have Windows Phone 7.1 (Codenamed "Mango") to be announced later this month, and it looks like a VERY good contender. It will be interesting to see how things play out over the next year or two.

I am thankful to have such awesome and talented people as Robeet out there working for us, and they do it without any compestation other than the enjoyment of doing it and knowing they've contributed to the community. I can't wait for a stable, release candidate of Honeycomb for my gTablet!
I personally just won't purchase any devices that have HC on it starting off until HC is full released by google. Hopefully more of the smart people on here will tell there friends to do the same. If we all did that there would be more pressure (lack of profits) to release HC code ASAP.
Glad I bought a tablet without HC and Market meaning Google hasn't gotten any money from me for Android 3+ and will not until they change their tune about giving all developers the code and not just ones who lick googles feet.
You read the thread title correctly.
After the huge firesale that went down this weekend, some videos started popping up online.
Apparently, Qualcomm was using blank HP Touchpads to do hardware tests for an upcoming HTC Tablet, or so the story goes. Bottom line however, is that Qualcomm Innovations (I believe that is the dev groups name) produced a functional android port.

While a few of these have made it into the wild, and even wound up on ebay, one or two have scattered to the wind in the US. One was lucky enough to fall into the hands of a guy in Texas, who is willing to upload an image of the build soon.
In short: Android doesn't need to be ported. Qualcomm already did that part for us. I for one, and looking forward to getting 2.2.1 running dualboot somehow in the coming weeks.
edit: This is a different video from someone else who obtained this build.

Funny thing is, it's on ebay.

*sigh*
It was a different video that was faked, by some douche named AndroidGuy21 or something similar.
However, two other separate videos have been uploaded. They are NOT for Android 2.3, but Android 2.2.1
In addition the unit on ebay might've been the same one from one of the earlier video owners, but not the guy in Texas who's offering to image his for the greater good. In either case, we've already confirmed that there are at least 2 of these out there in the wild, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple more at least.

I wonder why didn't qualcomm didn't test out Honeycomb..
A couple comments:
People seem eager to jump aboard this Android build, but we still haven't answered some important questions. If Qualcomm was using the Touchpad to test an upcoming HTC tablet, then they might not have bothered getting all the hardware components to work. Have people even asked some basic questions, like whether the camera works? Or whether it's able to connect to wireless networks? Or whether you can use multitouch gestures? Or any of those kind of things? Plus, is it possible the Touchpad hardware was altered in some ways? I mean, maybe they somehow managed to cram some different components into the device? Given this was obviously a product of the Qualcomm Labs, who knows how it might have been modified? Before I even think about flashing my tablet with this build, I want to make sure that knowledgeable people have determined that it is stable. Right now, this whole thing seems very strange, and I think we're setting ourselves up for disappointment.

You have absolutely no reason to think about flashing a dump... A lot still needs to happen.
I think the basic question for now is, how does everyone like WebOS 3.0+? Let the devs do what they do. All the speculation, misinformation, and general cramming of the developers thread can not be helping move things a long.

Considering it's nothing more than a system dump, you won't be flashing anything for quite some time.
It's one thing to install Android on a clean slate but quite another to port from WebOS to Android anyway.
Everything runs perfectly, camera/sound/wifi/bluetooth....check out the various youtube vids and you will see that qualcomm developed drivers for all parts of the touchpad's android (froyo) version.

While I question is this is the right section for this post, I'll just add that I did chat with Samsung support yesterday in regards to ICS. So I of course as Samsung when ICS is coming and was told "IF it is released, not when".
I clarified with him a number of times.
He stood by If not when it is released.
Samsung has already announced that they will be releasing ICS for the Tab Plus:

Why Do I Want ICS BTW?
I've had my 7+ for 6 months now. Other than the low-level audio problem, I'm extremely happy with the way it performs. I'm not a gamer. I'm not a tinkerer. I don't want to design my own fancy UI with cool animation. I don't want to do any 'work' on the Tab.
I just want to look at and listen to stuff. I even found a Media Player that finally displays the Album Art properly. Netflix works, OfficeSuite works, PowerAmp, TuneIn, email, they all work. Perfectly (almost).
I feel like I'm missing some majorly cool stuff that I won't be able to do as I sit here happily noodling along with Honeycomb while you lot are all blazing away with ICS, doing something else. What do I need ICS for?

I want it for the Peel remote fixes and the hope that the HBO GO app is finally compatible with our device. Not to mention lockscreen player capability added to Google Music.
Could always be worse (not much worse) but we could just get a "value pack" like Galaxy S devices.
Bahahahaha.
Is anyone really surprised that Samsung is taking their time to rollout an update?
But seriously, I always say that I am never buying another Samsung device for this reason, but then I always end up buying another Samsung device.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0's release is being delayed to the end of the month, according to Samsung themselves. The reason is because they just haven't got ICS working properly with the device yet.
Whilst this is no doubt frustrating for some, at least they are waiting until they've got it ready. There's a general tacit acceptance that any release of any products software will come with bugs that will reveal themselves, and I for one would rather wait a little longer so that the "final" product has less of the buggers to deal with when released.
Whilst Samsung won't confirm I think that it is reasonable to assume that when the Tab 2 gets released then there should be ICS for our beloved Tab+ following swiftly afterwards... Aside from the slower CPU (and why is the newer product getting a slower ) the two units are pretty darn similar, are they not ?
And lets be honest, it's not as if our beloved Tab+ is suffering terribly with Honeycomb... IT IS A GREAT STANDALONE product. Want it to look different? Go investigate some of the Launchers available from the app store/market. Want it to perform differently? Take a manup pill and ROM the bastard, I managed it, and I'm a grumpy old Windows luddite.
Some people are speculating that the hold up for the Tab 2 is due to it using the new Broadcom SoC. The Tab Plus uses the Exynos which is already working for ICS on the SGSII.
Of course, this is just hearsay and speculative but I do hope the development for ICS on the Tab Plus is just as much completed as it is on the Tab 2.

Agreed. In fact, the Tab+ is running what I believe is a newer version of Honeycomb than what was generally available on other devices (most HC tablets were running 3.0 or 3.1, Tab+ is running 3.2).
Honeycomb got a particularly bad rap for having a buggy initial release that needed a couple of minor updates to get everything ironed out. What most folks seem to be overlooking is that ICS was pretty much the exact same way. My wife's Xoom is running ICS and it got another point release just last week that fixed some stability issues and problems with screen rotations.
I won't lie, I'd like an upgrade to ICS but I don't want to go from fully-baked HC to half-baked ICS either. And having used a Tab+ w/HC3.2 side by side to a Xoom w/ICS, I honestly don't think us Tab+ users are missing out on a whole lot.
I just purchased by GT7+ a few weeks ago, and I'm very happy with the device and Honeycomb seems to work just fine.
I do have some experience with releasing software for consumer devices. I'm in the operations group supporting a product with millions of customer devices. Finalizing and releasing software is a grueling process. Making sure that no one missed that one bug that will drive customer service calls is an ordeal. When a bug is found... Reset, everything starts over with the new build.
I don't mind waiting (granted since I'm a new owner I'm not really waiting) if they get it right the first time it will be worth it.
they needa hurry:-| remove all that bloatware i say! i assume this tablet is very new? i just got it so im not hundred precent sure on when it was released to the consumer i just would like to see why its taking alot of ram and be able to run newest software;-)
Announcement:
With the recent announcement that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus series will be getting ICS next month (in July), and the implied failure of Samsung to deliver ICS in June after previously announcing it, Samsung has managed to take over the Second Greatest Lie in the World, displacing "I won't cum in your mouth." If Samsung succeeds in this same pattern for the next 8 months, it will have a shot at taking over the top spot, still held by "The check is in the mail." The current top three Greatest Lies in the World, in rank order, are:
#1: The check is in the mail.
#2: You'll get ICS next month.
#3: I won't cum in your mouth.
Company representatives declined to be interviewed officially for this story, stating that they'll make an official press release in the beginning of next month. However, they have allowed information to leak anonymously that Samsung believes they have held the #2 spot all along, as "I won't cum in your mouth" only applies to Apple products sold in the USA.
In addition, Samsung lawyers have filed in injunction in Canadian courts attempting to displace "The check is in the mail." According to the documents filed, Samsung believes that this statement must be broken into two seperate statements, one for paper mail and another for electronic mail. Doing so would allow Samsung's ICS promise to overtake the number one spot.

Damn gary, I thought you did known better.
Ics update to us is "eligible" for one of the greatest lies. There is no real position for it yet.

Hmm, I think you probably meant to say "of what decade".
Gents,
a few questions.
a.) Which is the functionality that is only present in ICS and you can't use it in
Honeycomb right now?
b.) If you are so fed-up with your Samsung why don't you sell it and buy something else?
Honestly for me it doesn't matter if I get ICS in July, August or next year.
I am just perfectly fine with the current 3.2 version. Both my 7+ and 7.7 can
do just the thing I need them to do.
It's just funny to see different threads talking about the same cr*p, how certain people is fed-up with their tablets but they can't do anything else then wine. Guess they are not THAT fed-up with the tablet at all (if they still have their tablets). Or?
Why did you wrote this post. Do you think we would agree with you even remotely. I think you'd better farted.

A) Better battery life, better memory management, the ability to clear the Recent Apps list, the ability to use Chrome, the ability to save videos offline in the YouTube app, fixed Wifi Sleep of Death issues, upgraded standard browser... The list goes on.
B) If the Nexus 7 shows up in store soon, I may well do so.
Most of those people would jump ship if there was a reasonable alternative available. Enter the Nexus 7 and maybe Asus's original tablet.
I agree in some parts with the pro HC guy. There are no strong reasons for someone sell or buy other tablets only for the ICS. And a lot of people are pissed with HC only because ics exists.
But unfortunately he posted In a slightly wrong thread. As this one is biased on the lack of respect of samsung on keep promisses.

I'm pissed with HC because it's still bugged - it's not GPU accelerated and gets sluggish at times, and many various bugs aren't patched - those fixes come in ICS (as listed above). More importantly Google appears to have completely abandoned HC support in favour of the unified ICS OS, which incorporates fixes and improvements to performance, battery life, various kernel bugs which caused the Sleep of Death problems, and more software is getting out there which either needs ICS for full functionality (or to run at all).
And the worst part? Samsung's been making empty promises for months, while pushing out tablets which are very similar to the 7+ in hardware with ICS already in place. All the while talking about how the original devices are eligible for upgrades... but then mysteriously letting the deadlines get extended. Even for Nexus devices, some of which are still waiting for current versions of ICS - yet they're able to ship out new Galaxy S III's with the most current Honeycomb version in markets where Galaxy Nexus phones are still waiting for 4.0.2 or 4.0.4 (which is on the Galaxy S III). It's obviously not a problem with being unable to recompile the radios or whatever's delaying those devices - it seems more that they're unwilling to deliver updates to keep your phone secure and current in features, and would much rather you buy a new device. Even if you're on the 'pure Android' Nexus, much less one of the Galaxy Tabs like what most of the people here have.
I'm just very, very glad that Asus got the Nexus 7 tablet - at least they deliver updates, even if some of the updates need fixing on occasion.
The only reason a Galaxy Nexus would be waiting on an updated is because of the carrier that it is on. Different carrier set-ups require different software tweaks. That's why only unlocked GSM devices are "true" Nexus devices.

I agree with you about the Samsung not updating thing because it isn't exactly new, so we really have no real grounds to complain about common knowledge.

Well u must put in consideration that not all of us use our tabs the same am I right? I agree that its not really that big of a deal. But I can see how it can for some people. Me and my friend bought the same tab but he uses it for almost everything. From entertainment(movies, gaming YouTube...) to school work. And I have seen his device its not as fast as mine. And if ics seems more promising then maybe its worth a shot. Its free right? You've got nothing to loose really? But personally I've tried ics on my sisters Sony tab and I must say that honestly there is a substantial difference in performance. As for heavy users I mean. But hey its just an update its a win win situation for everyone right?
Oh man, that was funny. Although, I was always under the impression that the number one lie in the world was, "I love you too."
The UK user manual has been updated on the 6th to include details about using ICS.
One can only assume that it is expected pretty sharpish;

I like frankentab
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/23486-rommod-12-frankentab-v112-g-tabletzpad-t2/
I have gone to the DRH ics, but before I was also all Frankentab. This rom is still the only ROM that would download, install, and play NBA JAM for me. It also did H/W accel and video chat, good battery life. But, i am not gonna deny VEGANtab their respect.
This is the end of the useful information, now Im gonna rant!! When my tablet breaks, I am switching brands.
Viewsonic can KISS MY A**. Since this device came out, there has been ginger, honey, and ice cream, and these A-HOLES havent even supported one of these upgrades. Imagine what Apple's reputation would be if you had to buy a new device everytime there was an upgrade to their software, Same goes for MIcrosoft. But, I dont expect viewsonic's market share to ever increase either. My brother got his ASUS pad a month after me, thirty dollars more, has an extra camera, same Tegra 2, but hes rockin factory ICS! before that he was rockin factory honeycomb. Lucky bastard will prolly be rocking factory jelly bean soon. You havent even seen anyone mention jelly bean in the viewsonic forums.

They're not updating an ancient, obscure, recalled, and discontinued tablet that no longer makes them any money?! You don't say! You have some crazy expectations man, just be grateful homebrew communities exist.
Isn't this the one developed by teamdrh.
They are the only one's able to develop ICS and Jelly Bean for the Gtab from the ground up.
Currently its slow and most RAM heavy programs will crash.
