status 7 error & soft brick - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all hope you will be able to help me.
Device : Nexus S I 9020
So basicly iam kinda new to whole this world of "android" former Iphone user.
last mounth i got my nexus S wich is my first android phone.
As soon as i got it i started to read guids and etc.
Root the device and ofc the nexy step was trying Rom`s.
but then a problem , every time i try to flash a rom i get status 7 error.
tryed every possible combination of restore / wipe etc...
nothing helped , so i came back to the stock one (backup i made before i started)
after a while i discovered the app Rom mananger , wich install rom update recovery etc...
so i updated my recovery and installed CM7 using it.
used it for a while and went back to the stock.
after cople of days tryed to install MIUI using rom manger every thing went clear and after the intall device reboot it self and then stuck on the Google logo with the lock in the botom of the screen.
and nothing helped since then restore , factory reset/restore / wipe`s etc.
as last resort i tryed Odin and it worked like a charm got my device back and runing.
today i tryed to install a new rom AOASP(i think , or some thing like that) in the first time from the recovery (several times) with every possible wipe.
all the time status 7 error , then went to rom mananger and again same thing.
stuck on the google logo.
now iam gonna use Odin again hope it will work this time too.
Any idea how to resolve it , or why this is happen ?
and how can i resolve the status 7 error and what does it mean ?
Thank you all.
(sorry for this been so long , wanted to give as much details as possible)

at this point i was able to restore my phone using Odin , and then restore it into my stock backup (including all my data and etc...)
but the problem remain the same.
cant install any rom (status 7 error).
and when i try to install any rom using Rom mananger iam stuck on the google logo after the reboot.
so what can i do ?

After you get the error, just go to advanced n report error. Automatically a recovery log will be created on ur SD. Mount SD from recovery and retrieve the log file n post it here. Maybe we can then help you.

here is the 2 files i didnt know wich one is it so i took bouth.
Recovery and report.
hope it will help some how.

You should flash recovery from fastboot first. Then without leaving the bootloader, load recovery n install your rom.
My guess what's happening is that when u r installing from rom manager, upon reboot the stock recovery is being flashed(you being stock). That is the problem.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk

Another solution easier for you would be:
1) navigate to /Etc and find the file ' install-recovery.sh ' on ur phone using a file explorer.
2) rename it to something else.
3) install rommanager and flash latest recovery through it.
4)install the rom of ur choice.

Problem solved by using Odin ro restore it and after that flash Nanbackup and finally updating the CWM recovery.
If any one get the problem try this
Btw SuperAOSP is GREAT !!!!
gl all.

Rooted i9023, some help needed please!

Ok guys so I have managed to root my i9023 and flash clockwork recovery which was all good, I set about flashing some new roms via rom manager, again, all good.
So now I settle on this cm7 based rom which I love, used anim mod to get some nice transitions, then I used font changer.
All was good, then I decided that the font I was using was a bit ott so I decided to change it again, upon reboot it starts boot looping, bollocks !!!
So I try to get into clockwork recovery, and it seems to have gone back to the stock bootloader, grrrrr
I re flash clockwork, wipe / clear etc... then flash the rom again, but it would not flash, so I went to my backup of stock n flashed that, all good.
I then install rom manager again and flash the rom I liked again, this time no problem, but when it loads up the home button and search button are not working
So i decide on a factory reset, I select wipe everything including sd just to be sure but it comes up "error null"???
So now I wipe the sd manually and then do the reset and it works, ok, I re load everything on from scratch and all is good, but when I installed rom manager it says that clockwork recovery IS NOT installed again
Can anyone here work out from my ramblings WTF is going on???
I dont get why the font changer all of a sudden caused a boot loop, as I had changed font about 15 times with it without issue, also why clockwork recovery will not stick anymore after a reboot, when before it did and I have not changed a thing!
Cheers!!!
Rename install-recovery.sh in system/etc to something else, flash cwm recovery again, this time it'll stick until you install a stock rom again.
Rom manager is causing more problems than it's saving time, hence I don't use it.

Thanks for the reply, can you go into detail on what exactly I need to do to get clockwork to stick? I still hold noob status!
Thanks!
Also rom manager seems fine, I flashed loads of roms with it with no issue, I also rebooted a few time at least between flashes so I dont get why clockwork suddenly decided to jump ship.
It was the font changer that f&%ked it all up for me, or anim mod (which I wont touch now even tho I miss the wicked transitions).
When using Font Changer, it's better to do a reboot manually instead of selecting Reboot from within the program. That sometimes cause me a boot loop too. But after turning the phone off / on a.k.a. "reboot manually", the phone boots fine.
To elaborate what rentaric said, use Root Explorer and go to /system/etc/, there should be a file named install-recovery.sh. This file is responsible for flashing the stock recovery every time the phone boots. If you rename it to something else e.g. install-recovery.sh.bak then CWM will stick on reboot.
Thanks, but when I get into the /system/etc/ there is not file called install-recovery.sh.
The only .sh in there is init.goldfish.sh
Any ideas???
bump...............
Flash cwm rec and either stock or custom rom.
Stock rom incl the .sh you want.

I've read on these forums that using Clockwork on the I9023 is a no-go. Serves up incompatible ROMs, etc.
BTW, I'm looking to root my I9023. Can the OP please point me to the method he used.

Yeah I have a custom rom installed, supercm7, but the install-recovery.sh. that I have been told is causing the problem of clockwork disappearing is not in the /system/etc/ folder, so I am asking if there is anything else that could be causing me to have to re flash clockwork via my pc every time I want to change rom?
I will tell you exactly what happens.
1. I go into rom manager
2. download a rom and choose flash rom from sd card
3. it asked if I want to wipe etc, i select yes
4. phone re boots and I get ! with an android
5. I pull the battery, hold volume up n power and boot / connect to my pc
6. re flash clockwork via SDK
7.the phone then load the new rom on its own
Before it would just flash the rom without me having to install clockwork again.
install-recovery.sh is only there if you're using a stock android rom.
"so I am asking if there is anything else that could be causing me to have to re flash clockwork via my pc every time I want to change rom?"
ROM Manager.
It's not a reliable working tool for ME as I'm changing ROMs/kernels on a regular basis and it might not work reliable the one time you need it.
Thanks for that, I may just sack rom manager then.
Its a shame as I flashed several roms with it without issue.
Oh well, loving this supercm7 so gonna stick with it untill an update comes out.
Many thanks to all who have replied, clicking the thanks buttons now!
I had the same problem but i installed a previus recovery and works fine formeforme

[Q] Clockworkmod recovery for spice mi410

Hi all i tried to use Rom manager to flash my Spice mi 410 for the first time. I wanted to install ice cream sandwhich, jelly bean etc on my phhone by using various custom roms available here. I was very excited and watched youtube videos about how to do it and followed each step like clearing cache, dalvik etc. When i started Rom manager it said i needed clockwork mod , i then saw its list but my phone wasn't listed , then i searched google endlessly and found a version 4 for the phone , i copied it and made backup and then flashed my phone, the update ended with success message but when i restarted it it got stuck in boot loop, then again i searched internet ; someone said it could be because of wrong version of clckwork mod so then i fond a version 5 for my phone when i copied it , it still showd a version 4 in rom manager but whwn i go to recovery mode there a version 5 is written. So now also whichever rom i install it installs perfectly but gets stuck in a boot loop. i have no idea where i might be wrong!
Sorry for being verbose but i am frustrated here as its my first time flashing but even after following all iinstructions i get no result. (And why the hell Rom manager couldn't automatically found a clockworkmod for a phone or use a single file for every model!! ) Please if you can five link to a valid clockworkmod recovery file for spice mi410 then i would really appreciate it or if you have any advice or suggestion please do tell thanks a lot.
I don't know when i will be able to taste ice cream sandwhich

cwm
I don't know how to install CWM too
Maybe it is an error or something.
I didnt install it so I dont know anything about it.
Anyway you can try to install ICS
Hope it works.
Oh and btw you should flash it via fastboot. With fastboot you are sure that it installed ok because you flash it manually.
Hope this helps .

Sorry for a noob question...but what happens if something wrong happens with fastboot? will i still be able to restore it with CWM?
Well if the fastboot flash doesnt work your phone will boot into fast boot mode so that means you can flash your old version of cwm back .

[GUIDE] Root + CWM Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus S7500 / S7500L - Easy Way

Download CWM Recovery.7z from attachments. Extract Recovery.tar
Download Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.7z (or newer from http://androidsu.com/superuser/). Extract Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip and copy it to your SD card (internal or external).
Put your phone in Download mode. Flash Recovery.tar using Odin.
Put your phone in Recovery mode. Flash Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip from recovery
Reboot and ready
Thanks developers!
So no need to make kernel un secure?

I didn't needed. The other method posted makes the S7500L keep rebooting into recovery. So, I flashed stock firmware (S7500LVJLH1) with Odin and start over again, but same result.
I'd flashed again stock firmware and just flash recovery with Odin, then just write Superuser from recovery.
I hadn't time to verify if the problem was with boot.tar or with files that are installed in recovery mode by .bat file.

I got my hands on a gt-s7500t yesterday and started xda searching on how to put a custom rom on it. i tried all the methods listed under s7500 to put cwm in it but none worked and whenevr i tried to enter either through pressing vol "+" "-" home and power it never enetred recovery nor it enetered through adb so i moved onto flashing cwm through s7500L guide. so by using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725198 guide, i flased successfully flashed cwm and the phone was stuck in recovery boot loop.
I successfully rooted by through cwm and even installed a custom rom but the dammit phone never came out of the recovery loop, so i went to the next step and downloaded a stock UK vodafone firmware from sam mobile and tried flashing that since australian s-7500t stock rom is unavailable.
Now odin gave a "fail" meesage when it reached to flashing fat.bin, i tried almost 3 different stock roms but same problem. I took the battery out, and tried starting the phone the phone started but no display, so i connected it to samsung kies hoping kies will have a solution, well as it turned out that when i went into emergency firmware recovery, the device screen magically lit up for few seconds and went dark again.
i was baffled so i decided to repeat the process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725198 and flash cwm and boot again. well this time when this completed and phone restarted the phone restarted normally and everything seemed fine, so through adb i went into recovery mode again just to see if all was working fine, but now its the same recovery loop again, have tried wiping the dalvik cache, factory reset and cache reset but nothing happening, HAVENT tried the advanced>recovery reboot> procedure, yet.
now am thinking of two options. first to try install another custom rom and see if that might hellp or since iv got another galaxy ace plus, try to extract the custom s7500T rom out of it somehow, (if u guys can tell me howto, cuz i tried titanium backuo but since it requires root and since i cant get into cwm without using s7500L technique which soft bricks i cant use titanium backup to extract the rom)
Anyone got any idea what to do? is there a pit, bootloader, csc, phone etc files that i can flash through odin rather than flashing a complete package through PDA?
or can i just flash boot.img from a stock rom using PDA and you guys think that will solve the problem>?
Android System Recovery (3e) problem
i flashed "recovery.tar" as PDA via Odin3...then went into recovery mod but it say "Android System Recovery (3e)"..i think its Samsung's default recovery ... so where is CWM???
hi guys!
i have a problem with my ace plus and i have to bring it to a warranty center.. so i have to restore the stock rom and un-root.. any help?
is there a guide to do it? do you know where i can find the stock rom?
thanks a lot
If I root my phone, any advantage in the new root between old 1....
Can someone help me?
My Galaxy Ace Plus (S7500) doesn't want to boot in download mode
Thanks guys, great work
However, my Ace plus is GT - S7500W (London 2012 limited edition)
Is there anyway to root it?
Thanks so much!
Hi, Is there a easy way to unroot this method? Do all my files and settings remain intact when using this root method?
Thanks.

This method don't erase your data, just write a custom recovery and add SuperUser app and bin to your system.
The best method to unroot is installing stock firmware package.

Thanks. So does installing stock firmware not write any files to the data partition of android? What about the apps that are included in stock firmware sms app, contacts, call logs, maps etc, will those apps data be lost with installing stock firmware?

The recovery.img you have is larger than the stock firmware recovery.img. Does this write more data somewhere?

I've been having the exact same problem as you with my S7500L. Boot loop error after installing custom roms. I can, however, install CWM and obtain root without problems.
I really don't understand how the s7500L rom guys developed them... how did they get out of the boot loop.
I tried replacing the boot.img from the custom ROM with one from a stock rom... nothing.

Next time, read first, understand, after that do sh.......... stuff.
And if it stucks with all roms, that means that you are just flashing them wrong, so again,
1- Read
2- Understand what you have just readed
3- Read it again, just in case
4- Do stuff.
thanh you very much

THanks u. Sr beacuse i'm a newbie. the next time i will do that !! ^^
i dont understand
so i do correct everything you say. but when i full wipe and reinstall stock rom. screen still stuck in logo HTC. what should i do ????
From where did you get stock rom, if it's your backup there is pretty big chance to not work properly? And how long are you waiting for rom to boot(now, not before), sometimes it needs at least 5-7 minutes, even more sometimes.
And are you sure you are wiping everything from everywhere(meaning do you wipe stuff from 'advanced' menu in recovery). Whit this comes next question, which recovery are you using, if you don't know just say, is it touchable recovery, or not. (no disrespect intendet, asking like this, because you sayed that you are a new user, so im trying to say things as simple as I can.)
But mostly if you wipe everything as it should be, there is pretty much no way that rom won't boot.
1. i get link for stock Rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189199
2. i used file superwipe.zip to wipe.
3. i wait 15 minutes but still stuck logo

You have to do:
1. Make sure you have a custom recovery cwm/twrp.
2. Flash super wipe
3. Flash ROM
4. Reboot
Phone will definitely work otherwise you have either done something strange to your phone or its a hardware fault ie. You broke it

i don't do something else. i just root phone and then reset factory. My phone stuck in logo . and Then i tried to flash different rom . but It still not working. Ah i remember one time i tried flash a new kernel for rom nextgen. so This is the reason ????
whether install rom with the way: " flash 3 file system system.img, boot boot_signed.img, recovery recovery_signed.img." my phone is going to work normally?
Flash jaggyrom 4.1 man if will boot I bet !
Roms have kernel included ! So what you did doesn't matter its just like a fresh thing when you flash a new ROM!

And try without superwipe, try wiping stuff manually.
maybe i found the error of my phone. I formatted SD-card . I think HTC pico use a part of SD-card to store data of system. when i try flash rom JaggyRom" [3.2.1] from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473218 and partition a part of SD-card is ex3. i can go to the main screen of android. but system have problem have report "full storage". just 1 mb empty. i did used A2SDGUI to move data but still error full storage
did you play around with clocked kernels?
i don't know. I think Kernel is included in rom

missing recovery

ive been reading for weeks and am ready to start flashing roms and recoverys but i come to find out that i cant get into stock recovery. the phone looks like its going into recovery mode then it shows an android guy with a "!" then reboots normally... can i flash a new recovery without using the stock one. or how can i restore the stock recovery? ive been reading for hours and hours and cant find anything helpfull on the web... im using lg ally with 2.2.2 rooted with gingerbreak. i posted at an lg ally forum but no one answers since the phones so old i guess.. please help cuz im about to smash this thing against my head
i managed to get it working or i thought i did.. it let me download it in rom manager after i clicked "fix permissions" it booted into recovery but when i booted out and tried it again it wont boot into recovery again, yet rom manager thinks that CWM is installed... i dont get it
clear data of rom manager and try flashing recovery again...

it did the same thing again. would doing a factory reset restore the stock recovery? rom manager thinks CWM is installed. was i supposed to wipe cache and dalvik cache or does that not matter. im kind of scared to mess with too much since i cant get into recovery to make a back up.... is there a way to side load it using terminal emulator or do i need to use the SDK because i dont have a pc
i ended up getting it working after i did it one more time. thanks
