Switch off CDMA - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys
Is there anyway to turn off CDMA, As i bought the Verizon xoom while in the states while on a business trip using it in the UK when it comes to the market is a pain in the ass.
It always says it is a verizon xoom so i cannot download any UK only apps, like Sky news etc they dont show up in the market and it's a pain having to sideload them.
I have tried the fake market trick didnt work also tried turning of the data on the xoom but i guess that does not turn of the radio.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You problem isn't the CDMA radio. It's the version of the ROM that the Market sees. I think your only choice would be to root, and flash a European version of the ROM.
FWIW, you can turn off the radio by turning on "Airplane Mode", then turn wireless back on.

The ROM will work, but your 3G radio will not. You will essentially be creating a wifi only Xoom.

just root it and use market enabler, as i do with my cdma xoom here in germany

Take a look around the Development section. There are a couple of Euro threads. But be careful. There is a risk of bricking your device when installing a boot image that didn't come with your device. I would ask a lot of questions in one of those threads, if I were you.

(Q)Help Cellcom Hero Brick?

Help Please....I have a cellcom (CDMA) branded hero rooted, amon recovery s-off. I flashed a sprint radio and now my phones hangs on boot screen. I am able to get back into recovery. I flashed every cdma hero radio i can find. I tried to flash the sprint and cellular south update via pc(usb) but it hangs up about half way thru. I cannot find any cellcom radios or updates to return to stock. Any ideas????
do you have a nanadroid back up?
I have cellcom to, but why would you flash a sprint radio lol?
yeah i made a nandroid backup but i get an error when i try to restore. i flashed a sprint radio because i was trying to do an esn repair but that's a diiferent subject.

You need to flash an official update from your carrier to get the radio back. Good thing is your is not bricked. If it was, it would not cut on at all. Just flash the update from your carrier and re-root. Keep your nandroid so you can restore it later and save time. If you need help finding an update let me know. You should find one from the htc site. That is where I get cellular south updates.

Click the December 15 button and follow the instructions. Hope you get it fixed. You'll have to root your phone again once you are back into stock 2.1.

Glad it worked out for you.
If I may chime in on this, the radio (as long as it's for cdma if you have a cdma hero or gsm for gsm heros) itself is generic. Be it from cellular south, sprint, or any other carrier's ruu it should work fine as long as it's for your correct radio in the phone (i.e. cdma or gsm). Sure it wasn't just a bad flash and you got lucky?

Did I "break" my HSUPA?

I need some help- please.
I've been experimenting with some different radios. After not having much luck- upload speeds went down the crapper (no higher than .35 Mbps), I've since reflashed back to my stock radio, and my upload speeds still seem capped at .35Mbps. Before with the same radio I was averaging 1.25 Mbps. My download speeds are a little lower, but not by too much.
After doing some research, I read were flashing radios can actually "break" HSUPA. Is this true? If so, can it be regained, and if so, how?
Phone is an Inspire 4G rooted with Bubby's tool, and running CM7. Everything is the same now as was previously, when upload speeds were faster.
I would greatly appreciate any help. I'm still a bit of a novice at this, but trying to learn as I go.
Thanks in advance..

Thank you very much for that..
does "RUU back to stock" mean unrooting the phone and returning to factory spec?
Is there a kit to do this?
Thanks again..
8 threads down from your thread is an old thread dealing with this issue. I am guessing you didn't search at all.

This is just my opinion. Instead of unrooting your phone and all of that, just flash the new rooted stock RUU that is based on the 4/29 AT&T update. It contains everything you need to get up and running at full speeds - new radio, new RIL, and the proper build.prop settings. Once you've confirmed your speeds are good, then you can flash another ROM, and leave your radio as is.

Worked like a charm. Thanks.. Only thing I neglected to do was test GPS before reflashing back to CM7. My dl, and ul speeds are back to where they were, but still taking forever to acquire GPS. Don't know if this is a radio issue, or rom issue.

try faster fix and gps scripts 1.2 then take your phone outside for a few minutes. people also suggest going to google.com through the browser and let it get your location

No problem, glad to help. GPS slow locking is a known issue in CM7. As nhshah7 suggested, there is a universal GPS Fix for all ROMs located here. Made a world of difference with my phone.

[Q] Nexus S No SIM Error (AT&T)

Couldn't find this anywhere so I thought I would ask....
I've had the White Nexus S w/ AT&T 3G Bands for a week or so now and it's been great. Running CM7 with custom kernel and all is good. For what ever reason it started giving me the "No SIM" error. I have no idea why this just happened all of the sudden like this. Anyways, AT&T was kind enough to give me a new SIM and this issue just will not go away.
I'm out of ideas on this...
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if this will work, but try to go back to stock, and see if it's works.
I'm a Vibrant user, so I have no idea how you would do this (least I won't until Wednesday, when I get the Nexus S 4G from Sprint), but try that, may fix your problem.

Bootloader shows the Radio version to be: I9020UCKB2
It even shows the carrier info to be ATT
What should the APN settings be for AT&T?
Borrowed the APN settings off of a Bravo here inside the store and and when I save the settings it doesn't list the APN like it should. I am saving the settings but it doesn't show after its saved.

Now I'm having issues with flashing the stock radio...
Here's what the device is telling me:
"Verify Image (RADIO) ... Fail
And of course cmd prompt just shows where the write failed. I am using the radio file found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033269
I'm just simply extracting the radio img from that zip and using fastboot to apply.

Yeah I have. I received a brand new one from AT&T when this first started.
I've given up on fixing this device. I contacted Negri Electronics and asked for an RMA. This unit has to be a lemon. This will make the first time I've ever had to send a phone back. Hopefully the replacement will be a better unit.

[Q] UK WIFI version xoom root

Has anyone successfully rooted the UK WIFI version of the xoom. I have seen many posts about rooting and i have given some a go but all i get it a boot loop or failed to mount partitions via clockwork. I think the fastboot images i flashed were not compatible.
So i have restored to a stock version of boot.img and recovers.img (had to use the Canadian version as the US version broke WIFI). I have seen many of the posts say that their methods could brick the uk version so i am a bit cautious now.

If you can post the stock boot.img I can try changing the ro.secure to 0, hopefully you can get root back after that.
Which version of Honeycomb are you running? is your bootloader unlocked (does that even apply to the wifi xoom? Sorry I am a bit clueless to wifi specifics as I only have the Verizon/3G version)

I used the One-Click-Root on my Stock WiFi UK Motorola Xoom, and it worked exceptionally well, no boot loops or any other problems. The method can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011196
But I cant guarantee it will work for you, as I'm not sure if it was a fluke for me or not, regardless it's up to you if you want to try it.

I have loked at that post but the big red writing saying "MOD Edit: This may not be compatible with UK models and may result in a brick. Proceed with caution!"
then on post 3 he says he was taking it down due to eu issue. Can anyone else confirm that the UK WIFI model work with this
I rooted my UK Wifi xoom, but not using the one-click method. Unfortunately I now can't find the xda post which explained how to do it though. I'm now on the 1.3.0 version of Tiamat and I'm not sure if I dare upgrade to a newer version, since no-one seems to know if it'll work.
At the moment I'm going to wait for Android 3.1 before I do anything else, I think.
Tried the 2 ways to root. Soft bricked the xoom playing with roms, flashed the USA rom to it, and also lost the wifi. reboot, and all was back to normal. was about 2.30 in the morning, lost the will to live. Tried the one click root, and all went without hitch for me.
Finally tried the 3.1 update using the cwm method. Which to be honest was a breeze.
Been flashing HTC for a long time now. There is always a risk, albeit a very small one.
Just to add check the wifi tab in the one click root software. Might sound obvious, but best to check. In the heat of the moment, you may just click root without checking. I did, but pulled the USB when the xoom started to reset.
UK. Wifi only, flashed with USA rom.

Thank for the confirmation. I will give it a go. Will i loose any data rooting? does it need to wipe anything or just flash over recovery and boot? ( i have already oem unlocked it so i dont need to do that again which does wipe).
Its a shame titanium backup requires root. I would like to back up my saves + data before rooting but can only do that after i have rooted.
I wouldn't recommend using the one-click root option.

Are you sure, as i tried that one and thats where i got stuck at boot. I thought that the us and uk wifi versions were the same so restoring back to stock boot.img is where i lost my wifi, a post said the Canadian version is the same as the uk, not the us, which explained why the Canadian version got back my wifi. Is this correct or did i do something wrong?

Noobie Question for I9020A using TMobile Sim Card

Hi all,
As a preface, I bought my Nexus S yesterday (Craigslist) already Unlocked and Rooted with CyberGR Mod v2 ROM loaded. I inserted my T-Mobile Sim Card and made a successful call; the person receiving my call confirmed it was in fact my phone number calling them.
I wiped the phone clean and did a factory reset. I flashed into the OTA ICS 4.0.3 official ROM and I received no signal. I noted that my baseband had changed to KI1 as a result.
I then tried to reflash into a modified ROM, but found out that Clockwork Recovery wasn't pulling up as it used to. In fact, Clorckwork Recovery won't stick at all. Thus I resorted to Fastboot to get into CWR and loaded Cyanogen 9. No signal.
Fastboot into CWR and loaded CyberGR Mod v2 like before. No signal.
Fastboot into CWR and flashed different I9020a radio images, JK1, JK8, KB3... No signal.
Any ideas? Am I missing something?
Thanks you all!
It looks like the previous owner scared the crap out of this poor Nexus S...
is the IMEI correct ?
input *#06# and report.
or T mobile is barring you for some reason ... did you contact them ?
Thanks for your reply mahanddeem! The IMEI on the back cover matches with what showed on screen. I will give TMobile a call right now and report back in this thread.
Edit: Will have to wait tomorrow for when TMobile customer service opens for business, but I'm still able to use my Nexus one with the same sim card.
I9020a uses frequencies for at&t. You should have gotten an i9020t as it uses the frequencies needed for T-Mobile.

I think you need to flash an at&t radio to get a signal. Not sure, though. I know you'll only get EDGE data speeds, no 3G.

Huh? I said flash an AT&T radio. The OP said he has an I9020A, which is an AT&T phone. Nothing said about flashing a tmobile radio. Read the previous post thoroughly before replying, please.
No matter what radio he flashes, it will not change what the hardware supports. T-Mobile uses aws for it's hspa. The phone he has (i9020a) does not support it. No matter what he flashes, the best he will get is edge. what the OP needs to do is get the right phone.

After trying different radio images with inconclusive results, I'm now on I9020AUCKF1... also with inconclusive results. T-Mobile was of no help saying that they never supported the Nexus S model I currently own, and that I should contact Samsung tech support.
After going through Samsung support via Online Chat, they told me to hit up T-Mobile support at the end.
Lovely.

yeah unfortunately sometimes each party is throwing toward the other , not suprising ...
I would clean , AGAIN , everything from top to buttom again ...
With factory reset + SD format
With CWM --->format / clean everything comes in your way...
Then install a full (try Gingerbread FULL ROM , 2.3.6) with its Radio and everything , for your model
And hope for the best ...

The ICS 4.0.3 rom you flashed is for the I9020T phone. It does not work for I9020A.
Try flashing the FULL original stock rom for your phone.
If it is a I9020A then it should be this:

Any luck ?
I'll give it a try tomorrow. Thanks for the help you all. Points for everybody!
EDIT: ejohnson0547 - I actually previously flashed into the Gingerbread ROM you listed; no luck there either. I did made sure that it was for the i9020a as well when previously flashing the legacy roms. Guess I'll start from square one again and try gingerbread once more. By the way, you wouldn't happen to know whether or not flashing an I9020T ROM into an I9020A Nexus will brick the radio, would you? I'm hoping that this phone still works with AT&T SIM cards, just in case I might need to trade or sell it off for the correct model of Nexus.

Tried editing and adding new APN settings with whatever T-Mobile network settings/names I can find online, but none have actually turned to my favor. Is there an actual updated list I can find and use that exists online or on XDA? Google has been failing me a bit these past few days
Just tried it a few minutes ago, and I only get a "Emergency Calls" signal, as well as only being able to view AT&T as the only Available Network under Mobile Network Settings. Kind of what I expected in the end, as this was exactly what I had been facing the past few days. Now if only I could find an AT&T SIM card to test it out...
