Did I "break" my HSUPA? - HTC Inspire 4G

I need some help- please.
I've been experimenting with some different radios. After not having much luck- upload speeds went down the crapper (no higher than .35 Mbps), I've since reflashed back to my stock radio, and my upload speeds still seem capped at .35Mbps. Before with the same radio I was averaging 1.25 Mbps. My download speeds are a little lower, but not by too much.
After doing some research, I read were flashing radios can actually "break" HSUPA. Is this true? If so, can it be regained, and if so, how?
Phone is an Inspire 4G rooted with Bubby's tool, and running CM7. Everything is the same now as was previously, when upload speeds were faster.
I would greatly appreciate any help. I'm still a bit of a novice at this, but trying to learn as I go.
Thanks in advance..

Thank you very much for that..
does "RUU back to stock" mean unrooting the phone and returning to factory spec?
Is there a kit to do this?
Thanks again..

8 threads down from your thread is an old thread dealing with this issue. I am guessing you didn't search at all.

This is just my opinion. Instead of unrooting your phone and all of that, just flash the new rooted stock RUU that is based on the 4/29 AT&T update. It contains everything you need to get up and running at full speeds - new radio, new RIL, and the proper build.prop settings. Once you've confirmed your speeds are good, then you can flash another ROM, and leave your radio as is.

Worked like a charm. Thanks.. Only thing I neglected to do was test GPS before reflashing back to CM7. My dl, and ul speeds are back to where they were, but still taking forever to acquire GPS. Don't know if this is a radio issue, or rom issue.
Thanks again..

try faster fix and gps scripts 1.2 then take your phone outside for a few minutes. people also suggest going to google.com through the browser and let it get your location

No problem, glad to help. GPS slow locking is a known issue in CM7. As nhshah7 suggested, there is a universal GPS Fix for all ROMs located here. Made a world of difference with my phone.

(Radio) All radio.img and update.zips Update-2!READ

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN FLASHING OR MODIFYING THE RADIO.IMG AS THIS IS THE EASIEST WAY TO BRICK YOUR PHONE
All of the update.zips work 100% of the time. There has been no report of brick and i have used all of them at least once. if you dont like a new radio flash the old one. Good luck!
the stock radio.img is from the 1.56 RUU for the SPRINT CDMA HERO
There are three Radios here. stock, 2.41.04.02.03, and 2.42.00.03.10. they are in order from release date. high number=newer. radios are risky so i suggest sticking with one. they almost never cause worse performance. if you TRULY feel your signal has degraded i put the stock in here for you to return to.
Update!2 ok so with the new release of 2.42.01.04.27 i was kinda on the ehhh bar with it. i never like new releases because they will always take something from you.
so in this case they have taken the ability to use data with a .27 kernel. so if you flash this radio, you will not get data with any rom that has .27. including the fresh toast 1.1 and all 1.5's. so its up to you. i didnt gain one thing from this radio. battery life and signal stay 100% the same. i did lose data though.
so personally i would stick with 2.42.00.03.10

Just to be sure ... I am only asking this as a precaution as I do not want to brick my phone. These are for the SPRINT CDMA HERO correct? And when you say STOCK you mean the Radio that was originally installed on the SPRINT CDMA HERO like "out of box" so to speak?... Again I'm asking to clear up assumptions. a.k.a. (Click happy readers)
Is this for 1.5 as well or is this to be used only on fresh 2.0b

I updated the radio to 2.41.04.02.02 earlier today and saw my download speeds decrease by about 50%. So I finally tried to flash back the Stock radio posted here. The good news it didn't brick my phone but it also didn't work. My phone still shows version 2.41.04.02.02. When I did the flash of the Stock radio file I never saw any error message and I didn't see the message about extracting radio file. Any ideas? Thanks

well i just retried it with the attached signed stock radio.img and it worked correctly. you may want to double check that in nandroid you are selecting the stock one not the 2.41.04.02.03-signed.zip one

ok i think i know what caused this. although it says its still 2.blahblah its rlly the stock. the manifest isnt right so i guess it didnt apply. ill have a fix up but for right now your set with the stock radio.
It was the Stock img because is was the last one in the list to select. Are you using the instructions from geekforme to do the flash. That is what I was following.

yes you did it right. it should have worked although it still shows the old baseband. you now have the old radio. its not updating that for some reason i will fix once i find out why
Can anyone else confirm decreased data speeds?

Are you saying that my phone is now using the stock radio ver 1? If you are, I don't think it is because my download speeds are still way slower then before I did the ver 2 update.
Speedtest.net app available in market:
Phone was reset, then ATK was run killing all open apps. Test run at 12:30am so shouldn't be too much tower traffic, although my speeds never fall below 1000kbps
FACTORY RADIO
Test 1 (4/6 bars):
2239kbps down 671kbps up 285ms ping
Test 2 (5/6 bars):
1716kbps down 766kbps up 326ms ping
Test 3 (5/6 bars):
2199kbps down 617kbps up 342ms ping
UPDATED RADIO:
Speedtest.net app on phone.
Test 1 (4/6 bars):
2026kbps down 510kbps up 175ms ping
Test 2 (5/6 bars):
1671kbps down 715kbps up 183ms ping
Test 3 (5/6 bars):
1847kbps down 751kbps up 174ms ping
The decreased ping time is very obvious. Web sites start loading just a hair bit faster. The results are obvious ping times were cut in half!

Stock (1.56) baseband with 2.1 ROM

Would it be possible to downgrade to the stock (1.04.01.09.21) radio while keeping the 2.1 ROM? I tried following the steps from http://geekfor.me/faq/flash-radio/ but the update does not seem to stick - the baseband version doe snot change after final reboot. If it's not possible to to downgrade the baseband alone, can I downgrade both ROM and baseband using the recovery bootloader? If so, a link to some sort of tutorial would be much appreciated.
Belongs in Q&A...
Not really sure why you would want to seeing as from what I've read, the newer radio increases battery life and signal strength.
But yeah you can. I just downloaded the stock radio to test it out HERE. flashed it, and it stuck for me.

Thats not been my case. New radios have been worse in signal strength vs original stock. -80 db vs -95db. Battery like has been the same.

Just won't stick, unfortunately - the phone reboots back into recovery bootloader about 5 seconds after the box and phone screen pops up. Did you follow the steps from geekfor.me tutorial?

Rooted and no HSUPA? Read this for my theory and a possible fix.

I think some of these rooting programs/routines like Bubby's root are causing the loss of hsupa. See my post here about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12828255&postcount=2961
I extracted the radio.img from the PD98IMG.zip file in the \ace\tools\dngrd\ folder from the hack kit. I opened it up in a hex editor and found the version - 26.03.02.26
You can download the radio in PD98IMG.zip form from here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Support_Downloads#HTC_Ace
So now we just need someone whose HSUPA is not working to downgrade to this radio and see if HSUPA comes back. If it does, then you can flash to 26.06.04.14 or 26.08.03.07 from the same link above.
I am thinking you may be onto something..........
I flashed the downgrade radio. Upload speeds still slower than before I flashed the stock radio. Now I am going back to the radio I had before stock and see what happens.

Maybe you need to flash the downgraded kernel from the hack kit as well? Does anyone know if that would even work - flashing the downgraded kernel on top of a custom rom like cm7 or mui?

worst case scenario, wouldnt it just prevent android from booting up? if so, you could always put the correct kernel on the SD cad and reflash it from recovery right?
Per the hack kit thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
I believe the kernel he links to in there is the downgraded Telus kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=518730&d=1297824204
EDIT: I believe its the boot.img in the hack kit in he \ace\tools\dngrd\ folder as well.
Before I went back to stock I was Uploading @ 1.50Mbps. Went to stock radio because of the ROM I am on and my Upload speeds won't go over .30Mbps. Using the downgrade radio didn't help. It was a good idea.

I had the exact same issue. Like I said re-rooting fixed the issue for me. I was thinking that loading the downgraded radio would fix it, but maybe you need the downgraded kernel as well?

There has to be an easier way. I can confirm that HSUPA came back for me after the downgrade, before I rooted or flashed another ROM. I've looked through the hack kit and what gets pushed to the phone during the downgrade, there's not a lot of files in there:
android-info.txt
boot.img
hboot_7230_0.85.0007_101011.nb0
radio.img
rcdata.img
recovery.img
splash1.nb0
splash2.nb0
system.img
tp_ACE_SYN3KT0108.img
tp_ACE_SYN3KW020B.img
tp_atmel224_20aa.img
tp_atmelc12_20aa.img
userdata.img
We've tried radio.img and that didn't do it, m next guess would be boot.img, which is the kernel if I'm not mistaken. I am not sure what all the other files do specifically.
I like your dedication. We'll figure this out...

So this guy claims to have fixed the HSUPA issue simply by reflashing the downgraded radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11847379&postcount=17
Maybe it's because he flashed radio.img directly instead of the PD98IMG.zip method?
I see we are still trying to figure this out???

For a quick test, can you reboot the phone again? I know when you edit build.prop, most people say it takes two reboots for it to take effect. Maybe just for the hell of it, reboot a second time and then try another speedtest? It's probably worth a try.

Thanks. I got mine working but it involved going through the hack kit and losing all my data and then having to re-root and all of that. I'd love to find out what part of the PD98IMG.zip file fixed the issue, so that hopefully people can flash just that and fix their issue without losing data, re-rooting, reflashing ROMs, etc.
I am half tempted to purposely break my HSUPA just to figure out the fix but I'm not feeling that masochistic just yet.
Right now I am back to the stock radio and looking into some things. I will be back in a bit, hopefully with some info.

Cool good luck. I wish I would have caught you in time to try the second reboot. Maybe you will be brave enough to reflash the downgraded radio and then also do the downgraded Telus kernel?
I am going to read up on what all of these files in PD98IMG.zip do. Maybe the answer is in one of those other files.
So after reading up on the files some more, I now believe it could be rcdata.img, which has something to do with controlling the radio. I opened it up in a text editor and its a small file that contains a handful of line:
QCT_UMTS_RADIO_VER=1
DisH=2
HSDPACat=10
HSUPACat=6
QCT_UMTS_RADIO_END=1
That's the entire file. What I posted there is the one from the downgraded radio in the hack kit. Maybe this file needs to be reflashed in conjunction with the downgraded radio? In theory you could open up the PD98IMG.zip file that you downloaded for the downgraded radio, and then add the rcdata.img from the hack kit to the PD98IMG.zip file, and then flash PD98IMG.zip and it should flash both the radio and the rcdata.

2G & i9020a

So we all know not to touch the toggle in CM7 for 2G/3G, I personally found that out the hard way, but I read that you could do it through settings, well now that I tried that, it's even worse. I have reset the phone/changed radios/roms, had my sim card repushed 3 times now, off and on 20 times, nothing will get this #*@#ing phone to find telus again... WTF. anyways, its going back maybe this thing is glitched?
Alright, new phone. SIM card is the same from my other phone, and it's working fine, so there was a serious malfunction in the other one, not sure if it was because of cyanogen or the radio.
Does anyone know how to back up the stock radio?

+1 if you can back up that radio id like a copy pleasee...since there is no official rom for our phones yet Im so scared before trying anything, but I make the jump after hours of reading up lol.
after lots of reading and posting questions, I think we (as in with cdn i9020a) should play the safe card for now and only go as far as rooting and installing superuser. obviously all these custom roms are based on US versions of NS.

The phone is fairly new so it will take a bit, things will get better. I just want to make sure I post anything that I find really screws things up, so no one else has to learn the hard way. The kernel and rom seem to be fine, it's the radio that I'm wondering about, and don't touch that gd 2g button, what a pain in the nut sack that is.

Constant Switching from 4g/3g/edge

So I have used TMOUS rom for ALONG time and recently decided to switch to use Cyanogen being a fan of it form other platforms.
While on the TMOUS rom I had 4g connectivity in my area about 90% of the time with the occasional drop into 3g here and there. It always displayed a 4g image in the top.
When I switched to Cyanogen that pretty much stoped. It always says 3g and is slow as hell. every once in awhile it will say H+ but not for long. MOST of the time it is constantly switching between 3g/4g/edge then shutting off.
Now im not sure if its a rom problem or not, but its making me want to switch back to a TMOUS rom.
Any suggestions would be great!
Edit: Just for clairification, I am S-On
I have this problem as well. I even ran the ruu back to stock and it is still happening. Please and thank you!

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem
I have been trolling the net for weeks but have not found a solution yet.
I've posted in threads here but no solution.....
My issues started when I went to CM ROM - I used to have great 4g all the time before I went to custom rom (I was on stock TMO US) .. Now no matter what I do, I am not able to get 4G again.... it's really irritating...
I've tried a bunch of custom ROMS.. I am on 1.13 HBOOT and S-ON .. .. CID = HTC__001 (originally my CID was stock TMO US CID whatever that is but now its not that.. I don't wan to run RUU because I don't have TMO US CID and dont want to brick my phone)
You can set your CID back easily with the All in One ToolKit found here.http://www.hasoon2000.info/getdownload.php?file=One%20S/One_S_All-In-One_Kit_v4.0.rar
That is not the problem, unfortunately. It just doesn't make much sense, whatever the problem is; and especially considering after a full RUU restock. That has always fixed whatever mess I have created in the past.
This rom should fix your problem. Dont forget to clear storage from bootloader. It will erase everything thoug. And follow the steps under show contents link.

I not sure if its a CID problem. The only thing I ever did was upgrade to the newest Hboot and load in the CM rom. even going back to the TMOUS rom does not fix the problem.

I'm in the same boat, friend. I've tried literally everything suggested, I'm just wondering what exactly happened in the flashing of the Maximus rom. The worst part being is that I GET 3g/H and then it drops back to E. It's so strange. The only thing I've not done is contact Tmobile about it, and i highly doubt that they would throttle my bandwidth without contacting me in some form or fashion.

From what I've read, it's doable; even with an unlocked phone. But I'd really like to know what in the dev's source code made this happen... it's a bit ridiculous.

This rom should fix your problem. Dont forget to clear storage from bootloader. It will erase everything thoug. And follow the steps under show contents link.

I just wanted to say, that I did this and it worked!
I did this the first time, but i just flashed the rom with a full wipe.
This time what I did was go into TWRP and erased everything....and I mean everything except TWRP.
After that i flashed the rom and boot.img and everything works great. 4g all the time again!
Sucks that im back on an older version of jellybean, but oh well

Can you take me through the steps you took to achieve all of this? Thanks.

So what I did first was go into TWRP and selected wipe. Inside wipe i selected EVERYTHING, every little box. Then Wiped it.
This left nothing on the phone but the recovery. I then loaded on SuperSU from TWRP. I download the stock TMOUS rom that was posted earlier in this post.
In TWRP I mounted it and hooked it to computer and transfered the rom over.
Once the rom was on I did the install of the rom.
I rebooted the rom into bootloader.
Once in bootloader i put it into fastboot.
I had previous extracted the boot.img from the rom.
I sent the boot.img over via fastboot which restarted the phone.
Once it got all started up. No issues. I am on 4g 99% of the time now.
Im thinking the issue was definatly based in the CM rom.
Since this worked I wanted to test things out since my phone was pretty much stripped of everything.
I tried out Viper rom and a couple of other non CM based roms, and I have had no issues.
IM back on teh TMOUS rom though. Wifi calling will win over when i go overseas.
Thanks, but it did not work for me. It is a hardware issue on mine. Thanks again

Must be.
I did find something out though doing all my research. Did you ever at any point update the radio? TMobile uses some frequencies that some companies dont use.
It is my understanding that some of these roms are packed with radios that are generic and thus ment for multi carriers.
Not sure if thats your issue, but might want to look into.
Its nice being back on 4g though.
