Just been playing with my Sensation and the first thing I noticed was a couple of specs of dust under the screen Grrr!. They only show up outside under direct sunlight though.
Pros so far :
Screen is nice and clear, even outside (although reflective)
Feels lovely in the hand. Nowhere nears as big as I thought (also have iphone4).
Build quality seems good.
Cameras are nice and sharp.
Web browsing is quick.
Scrolling is smooth overall, although not up to iphone standards, but good enough.
GPS is quick and accurate.
Fingers glide effortlessly across the screen and fingerprints wipe off easily.
Am liking Sense so far.
Cons :
Viewing angles in portrait mode are pretty crap. Whites turn yellowy green when you tilt the screen slightly.
Movies do play with borders top and bottom.
Speaker is a bit tinny and low volume. Have set my ringtone to 'old phone'.
Screen is highly reflective.
Gonna carry on playing, so let me know if you want me to check anything on the phone.
Thanks.
Again the ''crappy'' speaker!
Htc will never hear our compalints?
How is the video recording quality (image and sound)?
Do you have a lot of widgets? Does it speeds of in smoothness if you kill all of them except the clock?
I really notice on my cell, that's the main thing causing lag! And because the iPhone does not have any widgets but simple icons I'm wondering.
About the speaker: For me, it seems a LOT better than my Desire HD speaker!
Thanks a lot for the review. Though what I need to hear is not just "good" or "bad". I mean could you please rate using really bad, very bad, bad, average, good, very good, excellent or scoring like x/10? That would be more specific because most of present high-end phones are really close each other these days.
That's funny. It makes me think "can you rate the phone by smiley face or frowney face ?" LOL
Could you possibly test out playing back MKV and FLAC files? If this thing is going to be locked down for a while I'd like to at least be able to play high-quality media on the stock ROM.

Even if it doesn't play MKV, you can convert them using DVD Video Soft software. Has a converter for HTC devices

I'd rather just not watch the movies if I have to convert them. In 2011, MKV support should be a standard.

what's this business of videos/movies having borders?
Did a regular movie have these borders?
(wasn't that one of the "epic" things) that there are going to be no borders?
(on a sensation vid i've seen on slashgear - the Green HOrnet trailer had borders, now i think about it)

It depends what res/ratio the movie was encoded in. The only thing the screen was designed to do in regards to this was enable viewing movies in true wide screen ratio.

Phone has HD (16:9) aspect ratio. Films are not shot in that format, so either cropping or bars are the result on HD displays. Same as on HD TV. HD video, or films re-formatted for HD, should play on the phone without bars.

I have been reading several topics on the forthcoming HD and it seems that most of us are very excited and anxious about the HD. Was wondering how many of us would actually dump the TP for the new HD...!!!
I personally don't see the point. The HD is basically a bigger diamond with Pro specs.
I seem to be one of the few who still prefer phones that actually fit in a pocket.
Now a Diamond with Pro specs (RAM, card slot, video out, etc) only missing the keyboard but thinner would be something to think about.
I'm very tempted to go for the Touch HD when (if!) it eventually gets released on T-Mob UK.
Fed up of waiting for them to get the Pro out of the door, plus now I'm running TF2D on my Hermes with the Diamond keyboard I'm not so sure I need a hw keyboard, especially with the bigger screen of the HD typing should be a breeze.
It's not so big as to not fit in a pocket, same size as an iPhone pretty much and noone complains about the size of that (not even Apple haters like me!). It'll be like going back to my old Blueangel! I think the thickness of the Pro makes it less pocketable than a bigger but thinner phone like the HD.
the reason i didnt get a diamond or iphone is because theres no keyboard... so no, im still on the raphael ship
Please note that the HD has no directional button. This will make it useless for games. Even with Diamond and Touch Pro, the limitation of buttons available make it difficult running games. Further more, I'm missing the camera and record button. It is quite troublesome using the TouchFlo 3D to get to the camera.

directional buttons? make use of the accelerometer! i really wish WM has games like iphone
Hmm i'm thinking the same, i currently own a Pro but i'm thinking of selling it and get a HD later. But i'm not sure atm.
I don't know if i'm convinced about the iPhone/HD big, wide & flat format.
Plus the fact that I always have the impression that the larger the screen the more susceptible to damage that screen is. I would be scared witless to put something like a HD in my pocket!!
I really would have to play with one in a store and see how good the onscreen keyboard was before I could make an informed choice.
So far my TP is doing everything I need and is a big improvement over my old Artemis that served me well for 2 years. Would changing from a TP to a HD be an improvement??? Seeing the specs are similar what "improvement" would I be getting??? If the answer is only a "nice big screen" then why would I bother bearing in mind it would probably cost a couple of hundred pounds to 'upgrade'???
Never: it's way to big, it has no keyboard and no flash(light).
Well... talkin about the flash, I dont really think that the flash on touch pro is of any use either...
I just saw someone walking by that just might be prittier than my current girlfriend....
Because I'm spoiled (and Christmas is almost here), I'm going to get the HD and keep the TP. This way, I can alternate depending on which type of mood I'm in. Just like swapping my watches.
Geez...I love my wife!

5MP camera, 3.5mm headphone jack for starters.
The 5mp camera is not really a major thing to be to be honest, cause mobile cameras could never come even close to the quality of the actual point & shoot cameras, hence ppl who takes snaps with their phones can very well get away wit the 3.2mp for random moments capturing. But yes the audio jack is definately a good improvement on the HD, I always prefer to have a conventional audio connector...

I totally agree the camera is just a gimmick really. If you want good quality pics to keep you'll take them with a conventional digital camera with an optical zoom. Phone cameras are only good for MMS messages and snapshots to be disposed of at a later date IMHO.
As for the audio connector... why spend 200 quid to update the phone when you can get a HTC mini USB to 3.5" audio adapter on-line for £5???? Doesn't make sense to me unless you have money to burn!
I thought about it too, but my main concern is battery life. Its not great on my TP, with that screen it will be terrible on the HD. I doubt you'll get through watching a full movie!
"That means the iPhone is useless for games? I've even seen NES emulators on iPhones... Come on now."
maybe he mean useless for all those current wm games where many require more hardware buttons then any htc phones got to control various functions like tombraider don't know of any htc phone which had enough buttons for that
I wouldn't replace my TP with HD because I think it's great having a keyboard on your phone for messaging, email, even writing blogs or modifying web pages when I'm not home.

Hi everyone,
I'm in a bit of a dilemna here - my Prophet just died due to massive ice tea overdose, so I'm in the market for a new phone. And as luck would have it, my O2 contract is coming up for renewal next month.
I can get an Xperia X1 for 220 Euros and a Touch HD for 250. What should I go for?
I like the idea of a hardware QWERTY keyboard and the D-Pad, but the HD's screen is just so sexy. Are there any other reasons to go for the HD? How does the battery life compare between the two? Sound quality?

I don't see any 2009 phones coming up on that at the moment so fingers crossed they have sorted it out.
Damn, that sucks. Sort of tilting me back toward the touch HD - how're the SIP options on there? Two-thumb-typing possible?
I use both thumbs to type on my Touch HD all the time, and it's pretty good. It takes a bit of getting used to - it is much easier to type the wrong letter.
Some apps have been developed to arrange an alternative keyboard (see "FingerKeyboard" in Blackstone -> Themes, Apps, Software forum), but they do end up taking about half the screen. So you Xperia gets the bigger screen when you type.
BUT! The Touch HD's video playback (once you get it working...with the help of SDTuneUp, CorePlayer) is amazing. 3.8" of screen awesomeness.
Battery-life wise...I don't use wifi that often, and I'm holiday-ing in Hong Kong at the moment, so no 3G roaming. After about a day I'm down to around 70% if I don't use it much. Use it a lot (wifi/3G on most of the time) and you'll drain it in a day, easy. But that's the story for most devices. The easiest way around that is to find some replacement batteries no eBay and the like...they are pretty cheap.
In my opinion, if you are going to do a lot of typing, the Xperia appears the way to go (you can even get TF3D for it). But if you're looking for that multimedia-kick, then the Blackstone is the only drug for you =]
Hope that helps a little.
Hmmm, that's the thing - all I really need is a PDA phone that doubles as an MP3 player and ebook reader. I would've gone with a Touch Diamond, but there's a huge thread about it having problems with audio lag - that would pretty much screw it in terms of using it as an MP3 player...
Do the HD and X1 have any problems like that? Skipping/lag/pausing during audio or video playback?
How about build quality on the HD? No problems with cracking, creaking or anything like that?
Thanks a lot for your help so far, everyone
hmm...
....if you're not going to do much typing or watching of videos..
if you don't mind waiting for a bit, then maybe the Touch Diamond 2 is the phone for you.
It's basically a 3.2" version of the Blackstone, complete with WVGA res. The processor, ram are all the same and has an improved TF3D.
As far as I can tell, Blackstone doesn't have many issues with audio playback. The music app is pretty good, and you even have an "Audio Booster" app from HTC that will give you Equaliser control plus some preset Equalisers.
Touch Diamond 2 (and Touch Pro 2) are going to come out some time in Q2 (probably late Q2)...so that's a 3 month window where these phones could come out. They might be good for you. Also cheaper....probably.
I've been doing some reading in the Diamond/Touch Pro/Xperia and HD forums, and it seems that they all have the problem with skipping.
Is there an older HTC device that's usable as an MP3 player (i.e. no skipping, good quality, low noise floor) and has HSDPA? Preferably with a 3.5mm jack, but ExtUSB is OK too...
i got an x1 and love it. had the choice of htc hd and bb storm when i bought it in november and still very happy with my choice
No cracking casing or skipping MP3s?
the silver x1's seem to crack, my black one is knocked about everyday at work and theres no cracks only a bit of paint coming off the metal battery cover edge,

yes had to send it back as it did get cracks, but sony replaced it and had no probs with this handset, which is silver.

i was hesitant on getting the touch HD because of lack of a hardware input method, since i was so used to my touch dual, orange dint carry the xperia so i dint really have much of a choice. im extremely happy with it though, because the screen is so large, the on screen inputs are actually quite comfortable to use, while i cant type as fast as my touch dual, i can type almost as fast.
my friend is having lots of issues with his xperia, cracking case, sluggish performance, poor battery life.
the HD actually has very very surpisingly good battery life. thers a good review at this site if u wanna check it out:

I've found a nice new use for my N1 and car dock. The camera on the N1 is left exposed while in the car dock, making the N1 a great in-car video recorder.
Here is my first try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0GB8HObJaM
These roads were really bumpy and make the picture seem lower quality. I have another recording on nice smooth roads and the quality is very good. I'll try to post later.
The video quality is also a lot better on the original file than the converted file on youtube.

Yes, Google car dock, and you don't need to do anything crazy to set it up, its essentially mounted the way have it for standard gps usage. In my videos you can kind of see the base of the dock in the top right corner of the video but I tweaked it slighty afterwards and you can get an unobstructed image.
I was most impressed with the stability of the image. These roads were quite bumpy and windy but the image is reasonably steady.

ive used this program to convert the 3gp files to mp4. for freeware, it does a decent job.
Been doing this for a while. Use the camera app and set it to 30 minute recording, but if a phone call comes in it'll stop it instantly. Also use MyTracks to record my speed etc. etc. and save the file at the end, as a what if. Also you can import that file into good earth to see your track. Also like to use LISTEN to listen to my podcasts. ;-D
Ended up getting a 16gb card because my other card wasn't enough.. i do have to clean it up after a while.. oh btw, use qik if you don't want that 30 min limit but then you have to remember to disable public broadcast, unless you don't mind people watching you drive ;-D Thank god for tmobiles unlimited internets.

VIDEO COMPARISONS BETWEEN TWO TOP TEER TABLETS:
Asus Transformer Pad Infinity(TF700T) & Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
This was created to give people an overall view of how these two tablets perform doing similar tasks and to aid in giving you a better view for those curious about these two tablets. These devices are best of the best compared to the rest of the Android tablets in the market today. Both appeal to the masses. Which one you go for is completely up to your needs. Thanks so much for taking the time to put those together. I'd say general use and YouTube in a browser were pretty comparable. You can see the TF700 stuttering some in the other browser tests and the Netflix test. You pulled up HBO GO and XDA from your favorites without clearing the cache first which makes a difference. They’re both very content heavy sites and having to load all that content initially is a lot of work for the browser and h/w.
In the end they are both great devices, neither without compromises. And a lot of people would never consider the Note because of the lower res display and lack of options like the extended battery via the dock, the dock itself, and additional ports. It’s great to have choices.
P.S. – The empty space on your home screens makes me feel embarrassed by the clutter of mine.

On HBOGO, every time i cleared data and all, I would have to resign in. How are you able to go through hbogo without having to sign in? So The only difference with my video to yours was after I had cleared all I signed in and closed it. Then ran the comparison. Xda I had bookmarked but I cleared all data to it. So nothing different from your video. I'll do another test on the XDA video with me clearing everything. I apparently did not video that part.

You don't have to do that. Samsung's always done a better job than everyone else at optimizing their browsers. As an example, the Exynos SGS3 eats my Teg3 One X's lunch at every browsing benchmark and their screen resolution is almost identical. The TF700's at a disadvantage right from the start because of the additional pixels its pushing. The browsing performance of the TF700 is close to or even behind the TF300 in some tests because of that. It's the price you pay for that clear text and those pretty pictures.
Yep, I'm here again. I guess no one seems to have mentioned about audio here at all. Not one peep about it. As I've said MANY times before you'll notice the speaker placement of the Infinity. You may need your glasses to actually see that small, tiny, little speaker that is ON THE BACK of the tablet facing AWAY from you so you really can't hear it.
The Samsung's REAL speakers are right on the front facing you and they happen to be real stereo seperation since they are actually seperated. The sound compared is night and day. While you need to keep the Infinity's speaker volume on max all the time just to hear it a little you'll really appreciate the Samsung's speaker quality and placement. Everyone is so hooked up on video and forgot all about audio.

I hardly use the internal speakers. When I do I just use Volume+ and problem solved. I don't need to even have the volume set to max barely 40% is loud enough. Most of the time I use my LG Tone - HBS-700 BT Headset. I like the idea of being able to go to the next room and hear what I'm listening to in private and my kids hearing inappropriate things when I watch my movies or anime is avoided completely. I also have an portable BT speaker that has rechargeable Li-ion battery that aids in long road trips to extend the battery life of my tablet since I'm not using its internal speakers. You would be amazed of how little I use the internal speakers for listening. Internal speakers/Volume is no issue for me.
I understand what your saying though... The Notes 10.1 speakers are pretty darn nice!
....................
Which is also why I'm assuming you don't hear much talk about speakers being a huge hindrance.
(I like how you made some of your words in CAPS)

The last thing I want to do is carry around external block speakers with my $600 tablet. It is a little funny to me. Most people that buy the Asus Infinity tablet will go about and buy a keyboard for it, along with external speakers. They are trying to make it right into a laptop. The thing they are used to. We all know one day we'll be able to run Android on an Intel PC. One day.
Got my new device and m happy .wht i do with new device let me know
I've seen better phones than the tf700...you must have massive hands XD as for what to do with it, I guess that depends whether your planning on installing custom roms etc

Yeah, one-handed calling is a definite no-no. I tried my ASUS TF700T phone in a full train compartment, but all my fellow passengers were looking at me in a funny way. That might have been me almost screaming to get any reception in the microphone of the 700, though. Also, they could probably hear the conversation better than I did, the speaker being at the back of the phone and all.
Huh?

Ummm...glad that you are happy with it.
What you can do with it is:
Web browse
Read books
Take pictures
Shoot video
Write letters
E-mail send and receive
Play a game
Watch streaming video
Jot down hand written notes
Store files from a PC
...just a few things you can do
I don't believe you can actually use it for a phone.
Have fun with your device.

Heh. :highfive: The rest of you hobbits go buy something else.
Anyone tried bluetooth for talking on the phone with tf700?
I can't see why it wouldn't assuming you have the 3g model. I've connected with a jaw bone hands free a few times for Skype etc

Following this current trend of stupidly large screens... I wouldn't be surprised if people used it as a phone..

I've actually seen people do it. I always smirk when they try and take an artsy photograph with it -- last summer, I was witness to a group of Japanese tourists snapping pictures of the animals in a large zoo in Amsterdam (Artis, for the Dutch). Hilarious.
For the sake of information and blowing off some quirkyness: before my eye surgery, I had great eyesight and lugged around a D90 with glass in abundance on trips like that. No way I'm taking pictures with a tablet -- that would feel like being recruited into a police riot squad and getting your equipment, then noticing the rather disconcerting likeness of your baton to a large German sausage and your riot shield's resemblance to an American pizza... until you realize that they are, actually, a German sausage and a big-wheel pizza.

That... doesn't always go so well. Some idiot did that at the zoo in Dresden, too. All fun and games... Until he dropped his iPad 3 in the water at the flamingo habitat.... Then I was the only one laughing :silly:

You two make me giggle so much!
Shooting video with a tablet is kind of sneaky and cool tho...
A lot people don't know tablets can be cameras.

Thanks, regard that as a compliment.
I was surprised to learn that in some countries it is actually against the law to have your digital camera not make a fake shutter sound when photographing. That seemed jaw-droppingly stupid -- as I've always hated people with digital shutter soudns, as well as people having keypad sounds on their phones (makes dialing go "beep-beepbeeeeeepbop-booop-beepbeepbeep-baab). The latter class also talks so loud when in phone conversation that there's no place to hide on the commute. I can still hear them on the other end the train -- until it was put forward that, seemingly, a high percentage of silent cameras was used to make up-skirt photos and such. Seems I missed the point entirely in having a silent camera, since I've been making pretty "decent" pictures of flowers and animals and such. There's no eroticism in that, unless you have some specific kind of sexual deviation.
I've actually used the TF700 as a phone on several occaisions with GrooveIP. It's actually pretty nice with a bluetooth headset, but I'd never put it up to my face because a) can you imagine the nasty cheek grease? and b) no proximity sensor to turn the screen off.

That might actually be an advantage: currently it's freezing over here in Holland. If I'd put the screen brightness on high and just pretend to be on the phone with somebody, I'd at least have half of my face warmed up comfortably. I wouldn't worry that much about people looking, because they probably think I'm retarded anyway.
Well, I suppose you could do VOIP through your tab. Skype and such would be a way, but that doesn't count as a telephone.

Seriously? That's ridiculous. If you have such a problem with people taking picture up your skirt, pay some bloody attention to your surroundings, it's not hard, or simply don't wear a frikkin skirt. I never saw the point of them.
Yes, let's put the sound back on our shutters. Because it's such a good plan to use a shutter sound when photographing a herd of, say, deer. Scares the bloody sh*t out of them, forget about making a second shot. Not to mention butterflies, cats... And don't get me started on people. Taking urban snaps is pretty much pointless if everyone goes either looking straight at you to see what you're doing, or runs away because they're camera shy. Evidently laws are made by morons.
That's why I'm always in the silent coupé. No idiots on phones

Yup. Find out before I spot you, because otherwise you'll have no time to run. </creepy retard mode> You might think I was a cretin -- although I *think* I do not look like one -- but at leats I'd be a suspected cretin with a warm ear.
Shame of the one that froze up.

Simple solution: use a real phone on your other ear - or even better: buy another TF700 and use that.
1 TF700 .... $ 700
Another TF 700 .... $ 500
Seeing the faces of the people around you: priceless
