Well, think of it from the side of the shop owners: There are just about only two models of phones with a nfc chip. Hardly anyone has one. Supporting it will cost you money, but as long as there is no user base, you won't have any income from it. You have no incentive to get it.
But as long as there are no shops that support it, users won't make the presence of nfc a must have feature when choosing a new phone.
We have a kind of chicken and egg problem. When there are enough nfc phones in the wild it might just take off, but I think it will take a few years.
Well I wish they would hurry up. I guarantee that when Iphone 5 comes out with NFC they will be all over it like a rash. It sucks. Yea I forgot xda had my location. Lol.

Gonna be checking this out with interest.. Wonder if they cleaned it up any as compared to what they gave us..
This might be useful after all. Kernel just compiled without any changes.. Samsung might've finally released some working source.
cool. let us know how it works when you flash it.
Oh, I'm not going to flash the kernel
Unlike our source, we could compile this source straight from Samsung.. This leads me to believe their code for their OS build is probably clean too.. So we might be able to use some of it to get aosp going.
I generally don't recommend anyone flash kernel's from different HW, but in this instance I think with their kernel source and our stock ramdisk, all that will probably happen is a nice US cellular logo, and a kernel panic. I'm sure someone bored/desperate enough will come along and do it soon enough.

While I agree with your statement I don't think the hardware is actually different in this case. That said, I'm not going to be the first.
I'm also interested to see what .apks from the Mesmerize will work on the Fascinate.
I started a thread discussing that here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822186
Very interested in this...hope this will help out the develolment of our phones..
FWIW, I'm pretty sure the model number of the Mesmerize is the SCH-i500, same as the Fascinate, meaning the hardware is identical, so theoretically the code should all be fully interchangeable.

Uhhhh...no, hehe. My keyword there was "theoretically." I wouldn't let the Captivate flash incident you mentioned scare you though. That IS a different hardware model, with a GSM radio instead of CDMA. I'm not at all surprised it broke the Fascinate.

angel (fallingup) flashed the kernel I built a few days ago using our ramdisk.. It was interesting, but didn't quite get there. No end-of-the-world crash, but it didn't make it far into the boot.
Still looking to see what else we can rip out this source code.
Just to share, I recall some people being disappointed that the Fascinate's Contacts app did not have the ability to swipe left/right for messaging/call. I just copied over the Contacts.apk from the Mesmerize dump and it does work on the Fascinate and has the swipe functionality for those that are interested.

Rom removed because i am prolly getting banned by xda again!
XDA Mod Edit:
Please be aware that Herver was today asked to comply with the terms and requirements of the GPL. He refused point blank to do so, removed his rom and posted the comment above this note, which only gives part of the story. As he has decided to take this action we have regrettably had to close this thread.
While we take every effort to ensure that violations of the rules are dealt wih in a confidential and professional manner, the community should be aware that this developer has a very long history of non compliance with the GPL together with the persistent flouting of the XDA's rules that he signed up to when he joined this site.
Regrettably he has chosen not to work with us to ensure that XDA is compliant with the GPL. Non compliance is not an acceptable option given the immense efforts made by other developers to be compliant and to work within the rules.

Question – What advantages will the G2x have over single-core phones when it comes to Ice Cream Sandwich? I know that the Nexus S will receive the ICS update before the G2x and be able to take advantage of the NFC chip with Beam, Wallet, etc. What would the G2x bring to the table that the NS can’t when it comes to ICS? I’ve heard forum folks say that ICS is optimized for duo-core phones, but what does that mean exactly?
Probably the multitasking. I bet our phones won't slow down as much as the Nexus S.
However, with that being said, I find it really skeptical about when we'll actually see ICS on the G2X. I credit our developers GREATLY, but that's a huge task that we can't expect them to do overnight.

I just read a little bit ago that the motorola cliq 2 just got Gingerbread after a year and four months of no updates at all. Do you think this means we have a chance for GB or just a tease that one old phone gets special support and not the others? And if we got true ginger would it help with the ROM/Mod nation or would it just be putting sparkles on the corpse of our phone?
Probably not. That news inst super recent, and motorola supports their phones a little bit better then samsung. If we get gingerbread it will be through the community more than likely.

Gingerbread on Sidekick is currently only hypothetical. My take is that it might still be possible, but very difficult.
Sduvick managed to boot an AOSP 2.2 kernel up to a certain point, but IIRC, it was still far from usable. No graphics. His work is available in github.
Winxixi got CM7 booting and into the GUI, but with incomplete driver support. I think he got frustrated and left. His work is also available in github.
I don't know if winxixi would consider continuing development, or if he has moved on to a different device. If he would continue development, and the rest of us helped with troubleshooting, research, etc., perhaps we can get a fullly operational Gingerbread.
It's really just a big project, very difficult for an individual to tackle to completion. Dividing the labor might improve the outlook.

Well... When the Galaxy 7.7 Tab for Verizon (which uses the same radio as the Charge) gets updated to ICS, the devs may be able to use the RIL to get data working on CM9. If that happens, then we may see Jelly Bean in the form of CM9.1. So, it's still possible. It just won't be an OTA.

So does that mean Dwitherell is the only developer we have left? We're stuck with the PB&J 0524 kernel? It's a good thing my phone is running good.
The US high courts have banned sales of the Nexus due to patent squabbles with Apple. Next Apple will probably go after the Galaxy SIII. I guess we should all just give up and go get ourselves an iPhone.
Would someone please point out where the light at the end of the tunnel is?

I agree. It really seems like the basis for some of these injunctions are as generic as patenting a keyboard as "a horizontal surface with the letters and numbers arranged in an arbitrary fashion with the purpose of providing an input to a software system". Maybe there is more to it than I realize, but I don't understand how some of these things hold up.
I mean, wasn't one of Apple's complaints with Touchwiz the square icons?
It wouldn't be so maddening if it weren't so hypocritical. Look at ios 4, 5, and 6 and compare them to Froyo
ios 4: Look, now you have folders and multitasking. Aren't we innovative?
ios 5: Look at our game changing notifications bar, wireless syncing, and voice commands! You can even share items from other apps on Twitter and Twitter only!
ios 6: Now you can share things on Facebook too! INNOVATION!
I mean, I don't care that Apple incorporates solid features into their phones just like I don't care if/when Android incorporates solid ios features into the OS. But the hypocrisy to be like (read this in the comic book guy from The Simpson's voice) "we're all innovative and stuff and you guys are just stealing our ideas so we're going to sue you" is frustrating.
I don't see how its gone so far as to not be interpreted by the courts as a limiting of competition type scenario, but I don't claim to be well versed enough in the laws to make a real argument about it. My frustrations are largely in principle.
Here's some interesting reading about all the crappy stuff industries and governments do. I've been reading it for a few years now. It's pretty sickening.

from my understanding, IMNUTS primarily developed the kernels for the charge. I have not really heard of anyone else aside from Tonsit (but I haven't heard from Tonsit since his initial release of FP1 PBJ).
Dwith just develops the tweaked ROM, and does a damn good job of that too.
I suspect that if there is a VZW update to the charge, someone will come out of the woodworks with something for us. but otherwise, I'm quite content with tweaked to the point where I'm not even thinking about ICS or Jelly Bean or Key Lime Pie...
