Hey,
I've been tinkering with my Nexus S for a few hours over the last couple of days, and I can't seem to unlock the bootloader. I've tried Googling the problem, but I'm having no luck at all.
I think I've installed all of the drivers correctly; when the phone's on, and I type "c:\android\android-sdk\platform-tools\adb devices" in the command prompt, my phone's serial comes up.
Then, and here's where I'm stuck, I shut my phone off, and restart it in fastboot mode. At the bottom of the list on the top it says "Lock State - Locked", I assume that's what I'm looking to change? From here I've tried unlocking it, and I've got the command prompt to say "waiting for device", but nothing happens with my phone. Even when I go for 'fastboot devices' nothing happens, it just skips to the next line.
I'm using 64-bit Windows 7, if that helps, and I'm very new to the command prompt.
I'm sorry if this is a duplicate post, I've spend the last half hour looking for a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had the same problem. There is a decent guide at androidcentral that I followed.
One thing I had to do was install some drivers. I know this is going to sound crazy - but I kept reading that if you install the free version of pdanet -it has the drivers we need. So I finally just broke down and installed it and then adb worked in bootloader.
Hope that helps you a little.

Ive been trying to get root on my phone but unfortunately the person who sold it to me unlocked the bootloader so i cant use the one click root option (the program unlocks the bootloader first and since mines already unlocked it just hangs there) my only other option is adb which i used to root my xperia x10 a year ago but now i have a new windows 7 laptop and adb is extremely difficult right now for me to get working, any ideas to help?
btw idk if this helps but when i try booting into the recovery i get an error signal
thanks in advance!
1 click works. I had the same issue. After it does the bootloader unlock it should restart phone, then boot back into bootloader and continue for root. Wrong forum btw, use q& a.

ok id move it but i dont think i can
and i tried that and it doesnt work, it says "waiting for device" it wants me to accept my bootloader being unlocked but since mine already is i go straight to the fastboot, rebooting to fastboot does nothing to continue the process
Learn to root without using a one click method. You will learn important things about your phone that will help you in the future.

This is why I hate 1-click roots. I root all of my phones manually because this advice is so true.
well ive taken your advice and i have adb devices showing my serial number so i have that working, but now when i try rooting through fastboot i get a message saying fastboot is not recognized *sigh* any help?
fatboot solution (possibly)

I've been going through the same thing and I believe I may have found the solution to adb issue. Waiting on phone to charge now so that I can try it again.
From what I've found, you have to download fastboot separately and place in the same file containing adb.exe
hope this helps

Open a command prompt from the one click root folder. It has ADB and fastboot support.

Hey you guys,
i googled a lot but i simply can't find a solution to my problem, maybe im just stupid.(or blind)
Anyway, that's my problem:
I've installed Adb & fastboot according to this tutorial because i wanted to flash a rom (tutorial)
When i use adb commands, everything works fine, it finds my device, i can reboot it through adb and so on. But if i try to use fastboot commands, for example getvar cid, oder simply reboot, it stucks @ Waiting for device. It also doesn't list my device, but adb does.
I'm getting a fastboot help dialog, so I think it's installed correctly.
I'm running Win7 64bit, i've installed HTC Sync, so i should have the correct drivers. Usb-Debugging is also on.
If you guys need additional information about my system or anything i'll add them.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my crappy english.
May sound silly, but are you in fastboot? Boot into bootloader and go on fastboot to do this

Must you go through either fastboot or ADB? Too risky if you're not familiar with the terrain. Unless you're tampering with HBOOT.
Hello, I just got my gf a Nexus S 4G, to upgrade from her HTC Hero (finally, right?), and I've been looking around and I can't find a way to root the phone. Maybe the thread is so deep into the archives, idk.
Anyways, if someone could help me root/flash a recovery (I've seen the basic Clockwork, along with one that's all touch based that I'd like to use), it'd be greatly appreciated. Or just some general direction/links, I could work off of that. I'm no noob to technology btw, been doing this since the G1 days, its just that every phone I've owned has a different method of doing this. Thanks in advance!

np. This is the method I have used plenty of times btw. You may have to push the root zip manually tho, so heads up
What do you mean? I've force installed the drivers like I did with my G2x, and everything is set up correctly, but when it says "Waiting for device", the Nexus just sister there at the bootloader screen. I waited 5 minutes and nothing.
Any suggestions?

If the command "fastboot devices" doesn't list the phone then you havn't installed the drivers properly. Note that drivers need to be installed while in the bootloader.
pdanet or something has an installer for this which i've never used. Also, NexusSHacks.com has a video of how to install the driver, however i'm unsure if it's the same driver for D720 and i902x series.

NexusSHacks is how I first figured out to root my phone +1!
Zedomax(Creator of NexusSHacks) has videos that show you step by step what you'll have to do. Pretty damn helpful if you ask me, just make sure you are watching his latest how to root nexus s or nexus 4g video for the easiest wat to root!
Thanks to both of you, pushed the drivers while in fastboot mode, and it worked!
Update!
I've successfully unlocked my bootloader. Thankfully I have a Mac as well as a PC, so I used the Mac version of SuperCID (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1694478) and, after installing ADB, it worked like a charm and took maybe 60 seconds from start to finish.
-----
Greetings!
I just received my HOX this evening, though I did enough research beforehand to get me as far as I have come.
When I try to run the SuperCID bat file, I am given the following:
Restarting ADB
Pulling files
Checking files
Checking if patch can be applied
Cannot patch. Token "" must be either "[CWS__001]" or "[ROGER001]".
Aborting! Your device was not altered.
-----
Seeing as how there was nothing listed for the token other than the quotation marks, I ran fastboot getvar cid and was given "cid: CWS__001". Well, that's what SuperCID is supposedly looking for, but I can't get beyond that error.
Currently in charge mode, USB debugging on, rooted, etc.
I've done a couple hours worth of google and forum searches and while I found a number of helpful replies, none had the same issue where there was no Token listed within the quotation marks.
I'd appreciate any help I can get and I look forward to working with the Android community as I learn more! Hopefully I can start flashing ROMs soon, though I am itching to backup first.
Hey there, hopefully we'll be able to get your bootloader unlocked!
Sounds to me like a simple communication issue between your computer and the phone. Let me ask you one question. Are you using the factory supplied USB cable and have you disabled HTC Sync?
It seems your fastboot commands are working when run by themselves, maybe you could right click > edit the bat file and run the commands in the script one by one.
Before I go too far in with ideas, let's make sure all these are covered.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Let's see:
Cable is original factory supplied.
As for HTC Sync, this is the one thing I have been trying to figure out. I don't see anything in the processes dealing with HTC unless I load the manager software. I don't see anything sync related on the phone other than "Accounts and Sync", of which all are disabled.
Is there a specific way to disable HTC Sync? I searched for this earlier today and didn't find anything specific and there isn't anything alluding to it in the processes, as mentioned, unless I try to run it.
Thanks for the assistance.
Edit: Also, at least under Apps currently running on the phone, none listed deal with HTC Sync.
Edit 2: If I were to do it manually, would the directions here still be valid? Under "Step 2 - Change Device CID" and then scroll down to "Manual Method". It seems to match up with a lot of what is in the BAT file, but you have to do the hex editing yourself. http://androidninjas.com/how-tos/complete-att-rogers-htc-one-x-prep-guide/
Edit 2.1: Apparently the same instructions are http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
HTC sync runs on your computer and if you installed it it's always running in the background. Look down in the system tray and find htc sync and disable it.

Must've missed that.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Sorry about the slow response on my part as I just woke up.
Yes, I am rooted. Took a while and a number of tries and I ended up having to install Superuser.apk manually, but I confirmed root via terminal and su. It's noted in the first post.
As for HTC Sync. I've ensured that there are no processes running and nothing is in the taskbar.
So as of now, I can confirm I have the correct CID that an ATT HOX should have when I do a check in fastboot, but the SuperCID bat doesn't seem to recognize it and lists the token as blank.
I can try doing it manually, but I wanted to confirm the correct steps and I linked to two examples I found on doing it in my second post. Of course I would love to leave this as a last resort. I'm confident in my ability, but I am not above saying that I am nervous, as this is my first Android.
Edit 1: Note that I have HTC Sync Manager installed. Not HTC Sync, which is apparently for non HTC One Series phones? Either way, nothing I can see relating to it is running, be it a process or a taskbar item.

For whatever reason, the Windows version just wasn't communicating correctly. HTC Sync was definitely not the culprit and everything else was in order.
Now to find the right posts about what to do now that it is unlocked!
Unforunately I don't have a Mac I can run this on, and I am having the same issue
Can't get adb to list my device
I'm rooted. have followed all instructions from all other threads. everything is installed on my mac and Win7 machine. ADB still doesn't see my device
Hey, so I got a HOX two days ago through att, and it came with 1.85, so I thought I was in luck, and could get it rooted. I've tried the one click root for 1.85 posted in the dev forums, but whenever I check for updates, it finds the 2.20 update and starts to download it instead of rebooting. I then have to do a factory reset to stop it from trying to get the 2.20 update. Am I doing something wrong?
I also tried to do the manual update, but the SDK doesn't work for me (it automatically closes whenever I try to open it to get the modules I need for the ADB). I tried all the solutions i could find for that problem, and none of them worked for me, so I'd prefer to get the one-click working, if it's possible. Thanks for the help!
I have heard the one click has issues now, but I know the manual works. You don't even need the sdk working, just use the version of adb in the one click root folder. You can find a download of fastboot if you search Google.

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried that before, but the ADB closes as soon as it launches, so that's a no-go for me, unless I can get that problem sorted out. Also, can't you only use fastboot if the device is s-off? I was under the impression that the HOX was shipped s-on from my forum searching, though I have yet to check my device myself
How are you launching adb? You can't just click the app itself, you actually have to run it in the command prompt. adb has to work on your computer, otherwise the one click would do nothing.
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
Oh man, I don't know how I missed that. Yeah, I was just double clicking to start ADB :/ I think I've got ADB working now, though now I need to charge my phone up before I try to root again. Thanks for all your help, hopefully in a few short hours I'll be back in root-land with a custom rom like I was used to on my HTC aria (liberty)
