To the lucky ones who received their Sensation... I've a Desire Z for the moment and would like to buy a second one, focusing on the Sensation.
I've been hating not being able to read my display in sunlight, far away of what I saw on ithings, even with full bright display settings.
Is it the same on the Sensation? if so, I might look for another phone (Galaxy S2?) because I can't tolerate it anymore :-(
The Sensation ain't gonna be much different than other LCDs, like the Desire Z. The SGS2 might have an edge since the glass is thinner (less glare) and the contrast can be bumped very high. However, if you really want a good outdoor display, you might wanna just get the Optimus Black since it has a 700 nit LCD. It falls a bit short on specs but it is very slim and light.

Super LCD can be readable in the sun depends on who makes it if you read engadget flyer review the tablet was readable in the sun.

Never said LCDs were unreadable.
I've just put my HTC Sensation in direct sunlight, and the screen is very readable. Much better than my HTC Desire AMOLED ever was, in fact. I tried to take a photo to show you all, but it came out very badly. The surface of the screen is a lot "glossier" than the Desire's, but it must be able to reach a higher brightness level.
great to know thanks alot... im tired of not being able to see in direct sunlight with my super amoled galaxy s
Is your galaxy s on CM7? That's the only easy I can see you not being able to read this screen in direct light. Speaking from experience when I flashed CM7, that was the ONLY time my screen appeared dim.

i honestly will not buy another samsung phone... i tried to trick my co worker into trading my sgs4g for his myt4g and he was like yea at first then he was like lets switch simcards and see how it goes after he felt how light the phone was in comparison he was like oh hells no... and he is not into tech and stuff like that.. but he sure as hell knew what quality felt like compared to light toy feeling junk.
As I understood from reviews out there, the Sensation screen is a step forward under sunlight compared to Desire and DHD but still behind Arc and SGS2.
With my DHD I can read the screen with the 9am sun but not with the noon sun (perhaps more UVs?) I wonder if the Sensation will perform better in both scenes!
IF yes then I hope the speaker will be at least 2x more powerfull than the tweaked DHD one (custom kernel) and my choice is made for the Sensation
When I first got my sensation, I was one of the ones that complained about the screen in bright sunlight.
I've just been out today (it's very sunny ) and it's much better, very readable in fact.
Probably something to do with me turning 'auto-brightness' on in the last week!
If any of you have upgraded from an HD2, how does the Sensation's screen readability in sunlight compare to the HD2? I have an HD2 and it's pretty much completely washed out in direct sunlight.

Good day fellas,
I'm seeing a lot of video and comments on screen comparisons between Htc sensation 4G and Gs 2 and on.
My question is, I'm currently on SG 1 looking to upgrade to either sensation 4G or GS2, I'm concerned about the screen quality, I'm debating wether I should order the phone or not. I can get it at a very low price (employee pricing).
The phone has a higher res. Screen, I'm trying to convince myself that the difference in screen quality is not that big, but I would like you guys to tell me what you think from your experiences, is the GS2 worth the extra $, is the screen really that much better than the S4G, anything else from your point of view that should be considered???
Thanks in advance,
Rodi

No screen washout for me, as well.
Also something to add, in almost all the videos comparisons, when looking at the phones side by side the sensation looks practically white in comparison to the gs2. My only concern with the phone is the screen.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
I personally got a Sensation while my GF has a GS2, you can clearly see that both screens aren't the same: one is SLCD & the other is AMOLED.
The GS2 has saturated, neon-ish colors which at some times seem a bit too much, it is particularly notable in the android market: the green is VERY saturated. When put side by side it can make the Sensation seem very washed out.
I have also read on wikipedia that AMOLED displays have a shorter life compared to SLCD because of the organic components in it. The varied lifespan of the organic dyes can cause a discrepancy between red, green, and blue intensity. This leads to image persistence, also known as burn-in.
After a few weeks of use I've got used to my phone and am truly happy about my display, even though it isn't as saturated as the GS2 it still is a great LCD display with rich colors, clear whites & deep blacks and my movies look crystal sharp on it. Also the extra resolution is very much appreciated and is quite notable when I compare it to my GF's GS2, specially in the menus, mails & internet browser - the pixels aren't noticeable.
What I can tell you is that I was faced with the same choice as you: HTC Sensation or SGS2 and the display was also the most important thing for me since it's the way you interact with your phone. And i'm glad I chose the Sensation
Cool thanks for the info, I just ordered it from my work

if u love OLED, u'd be owned by a good IPS like the optimus black (if u are talking android, that is).

But maybe we are just used to under-saturated displays?
I'd rather get a screen that's more power efficient. Especially with white background.

Exactly. Most people are used to washed out colours from LCDs, so they see nothing wrong. But it isn't for nothing that TV manufacturers are always trying to push the vibrant colours of their screens.
For me, ever since getting the uberawesome GNote, I can't stand the faded looking colours of regular LCDs.
Besides I like screens with really nice blacks and colours that look alive.. So SAMOLED HD FTW....
I agree, the rich deep blacks on OLED screens really do spoil you.
Yep, I have a SGS and whenever i look at phones with non OLED displays I pity them. My friend has the SGS i9003 ( the one with S-LCD display) and we compared them side by side, the SAMOLED screen looks WAY better than SLCD. ( more than 6 people were there and we all agreed). Its all about the blacks baby ..
how would the screen of the arc s be rated alongside these phones???
I agree ,the Oled display use less baterry power than other displays, and i love it..
It's just sad whenever I show my screen to some1 who bought a phone and said "It was cheap, it is small, and it's not heavy." And they see my GNex, and they say "Awh, me wun that scweeeeeeeeeeeen." All I can say is.. Pwned by low-end.
I agree OLED is best solution, even if the color is not as real as some others LCD, but I think this will be solved in a near future.
Just think that Samsung, that is the 1st word producer of LCD displays, has just started the spin-off of the LCD department and has declared that the future of his research is on OLED. Say also that Samsung is going to spend a pharaonic amount of money in research for the next year, I'm looking forward to see results.
There's been some negativity around here lately. I'm guilty of spreading some of it. So here's a thread for us to say something good about the HOX.
Here's mine. I'm sitting here on the beach composing this thread and I can see the screen just fine. This phone has the best screen of any device that I have ever had.
I put my sunglasses on and couldn't see my ipad screen in portrait mode.
Next.
Even though it's not made out of anodized aluminum like my old nokia n8, this phone is built like a tank...but an elegant tank (oxymoron?). It's one of the most visually appealing devices I've had and feels great in the hand. Also as gunny mentioned the screen is ridiculous, best on the market IMHO. Lastly and probably most importantly for me, the battery. On AOKP 6.2 I'm easily getting 2 days with light to moderate use. Right now the One X is the perfect phone for me.
Love everything about this phone. Brightest screen i've ever seen, even on 30% brightness. Camera sensor in the HOX beats out my point and shoot, even the DSLR that my dad uses for his shots. Rugged as well, friend dropped his HOX several times on concrete and is still alive with minor scrapes along the frame. The fact that I can laugh at my iPhone counterparts that their ENTIRE phone is my screen, they feel inadequate after that =).
Next.
This is my first android phone, I came from and iPhone 4, and what a difference! I love the huge screen, and the quality is amazing, nothing beats it. I can actually use the phone in sunlight with sunglasses on!! It is also blazing fast, from unlock to taking a picture is under 10 seconds. The same thing would have taken at least 20 before.
Oh and the design, best looking phone out there today, Period.

Yep. I don't know why people are complaining about development (*cough*gunny*cough*). We have plenty of top quality ROMs and AOSP is kicking off nicely. All I really care about is that there is one ROM that I like, and there is, so I'm happy. Of course that ROM is CleanROM. So you take what is easily the worlds sexiest design for a cell phone, toss in the amazing processing power of the S4, add to it the best Sense ROM I've ever run, and you get my One X, which is easily the best phone I've ever owned. Completely renewed my love affair with Android, something that only the OG EVO 4G was able to do before.

I haven't complained about development at all. We have some great devs and some awesome work from them. My concern is, and I think it's valid, unless we get sanctioned Bootloader unlock from ATT/HTC we're screwed. Having to chase down an exploit every time we get an update is a royal pain in the ass.
Anyhow, back on topic.
This is the phone that made me leave my Nexus One behind. Honestly, until now, I haven't wanted a new phone. Despite being stuck on unrooted 2.2, the UI is very smooth, the devs have done some great work for it considering how limited they've been due to source, and the camera on this phone is sexy as hell.
I love my HOX and the devs here at XDA!
The screen is phenomenal. I don't think there's a screen that can compare right now except for maybe the evo lte. I've never seen a phone with such a beautiful screen.

And you can see it in landscape? Sunglasses are polarized?
LCDs use a polarizing film to display the screen images. So the light coming from the LCD is polarized in one direction. If the polarization of your sunglasses are polarized a certain way (opposite, I suppose?) then no light from the display will get through your sunglasses, and the display will appear blank. But don't know why the One X is mostly immune to this. When viewed with polarized sunglasses on, I can still see the One X screen, but some of the colors seem "off". Like there is some polarization effect happening, but not enough to make the whole screen invisible.
Had my hox since pre release on May 4th and never looked back or regretted my descision and not one return or exchange. I love the look of this phone I struggled for months to even put a case on it but since I won one (thanks to metal head) I have started to but still damn sexy. The screen is just beautiful even on the brightest days. Coming from the aria where development was low but high quality the development here is top notch and a nice mix of rom options. Last the hox community here on xda is fantastic everyone helps and for the most are quite nice. Honestly I couldn't be happier with my hox.

3 months with the One X and it never leaves my side. It totally replaced my point and shoot (which was crap anyway), not big on photography but the One X is amazing for what it is. and very durable. i bought cases but never use them, i end up taking them off at the end of the day. and this thing has weathered through many beach trips without a single scratch (sand in the pockets are a silent killer.)
I currently got the HTC Desire HD and kinda love it. But it starts to get too slow, battery gets worse and so I thought about getting a new phone.
The HTC One S looks nice, perfect size, good performance, good camera and due to the AMOLED it looks like the battery last long enough as well.
But how does the AMOLED display quality look like compared to e.g. my Desire HD ? How abour reading from the display at sunny days?

The display is great and one thing, which definitely deserves more praise rather than just being slated by a number of people and review sites. Sure the screen isn't as good in terms of sharpness and screen real estate compared to the GS 3, one X, GN and SE phones due to the 720P res. but the colours of it are superb and IMO better than the GN (too dull), GS 2 (too over saturated), SE phones (personally not really keen on their displays when it comes to the colours) and also the GS 3 screen, but the best thing about the one S screen is just how good it performs when in sunlight (as in sun shining right on the screen), I can see stuff (even on black backgrounds) without even having to squint my eyes (and that isn't even with 100% brightness, only like 70% brightness selected) where as with the GS 2 etc. I always have to cover it slightly with my hand in order to make a text or website etc. out. And with my S, there is no yellow/blue tints at all, no matter what brightness I put the mobile to, whites are extremely bright white (better than my dell U2311H), this will vary from unit to unit though.
IMO the desire HD has one of the worst displays ever, colours are extremely washed out, viewing angles are non existent, and it isn't that sharp either.
I do notice the pentile matrix, however, I only notice it when I have my face right up to the screen or am really concentrating on trying to spot the effects of it. The most noticeable areas I notice it are on the notification icons and white/grey text on black backgrounds.
From one of the best sites when it comes to hardware stuff and so knows what they are talking about:
I’ve griped about PenTile RGBG before on this panel and other SAMOLED displays, but I find the One S to be completely enjoyable in spite of having it thanks to two things. First, how well HTC has controlled the panel (no awful hues, weird white points, or dramatic shifts as you change brightness) - this is basically the best I’ve seen this particular panel, and until SGS3, the best I’ve seen AMOLED in general. Second, because HTC doesn’t appear to be applying any processing that applies sharpening (like Samsung’s mDNIe) to text.
How you feel about PenTile really is the final factor: it’s there, but I’ve slowly become accustomed to it after staring at it for so long. If you go back to the Nexus S days, I was one of the most outspoken critics because of how large those subpixels were. With small enough subpixels (below visual acuity), PenTile starts to make sense. In other news, HTC moving back to Samsung AMOLED for phones is an interesting move after supply issues forced HTC to SLCD with some earlier phones, here on the HTC One S however, it looks great.

Although as always, you should check out for yourself first to see what you think.
Imo, I would get the OneS if I were you.
I also came from the DHD, an moved forward after the no update fiasco.
I am on pre-pay and did not want to sign a contract again, actually ever but that's another issue, so I shopped around for the OneS on sell in different places. I could not swing full retail so I looked for NIB phones that are turned over fast.
Well long story short is, I looked and looked for a slightly used phone and never scored one sadly, I would up grabbing a OneX NIB for under 400 and couldn't say no to that price.
However I still like an want a OneS, nice form factor coming from the DHD and really is a sharp looking phone.
Would I suggest one to my friends, in a heartbeat.

For those who own the phone how is the screen in direct sunlight. I work outdoors and hate having to shade the phone to see the screen. I was pretty set on this phone until the article about the s5 having a great screen and has a ridiculously bright screen. I really wasn't thinking about the s5 until that article came out now i'm torn.....really want the build quality, speakers, and lightning fast camera shutter with no hardware home button.
