captivate network unlock - Captivate General

I just want to make sure the following steps are correct to unlock carrier network before I start messing around with my new samsung captivate.
1. Use one click root
2. Flash Clockwork Custom Recovery
3. Lastly follow the [REF] How to unlock/unfreeze all SGS Models [NOW WORKS ON Vibrant 4G] post.
What is the purpose of step 2? why do I have to flash some custom software? And how stable are the updates after 2.2 update? I am wondering if I should even mess around with CyanogenMod 7, which is a mod, as far as I understand, that updates the phone to android 2.3
I tried researching on these topics but there is such a bulk amount of information that it's kinda hard to consolidate everything and fully understand it. Help out a noob!

After you root your phone, just download the Galaxy S Unlock from the market. Follow the steps on there, which is pretty much just a click and a reboot, and you're unlocked.

Be sure to get the one called "Galaxy_S Unlock" The Author is Helroz

actually I forgot to mention, but I am taking this phone to Europe and I don't have a SIM that works in the US to access the market.

try to connect to internet from a wifi connection and download busybox and sgs unlock by helroz.
step 1. Root your phone
step 2. download and install busybox from market.
step 3. download and install run sgs unlock by helroz. then follow the steps in the screen. with this app you dont need another simcard, it is simple and easy
now you can enjoy.
regards.
sorry for my english
and

sounds good

I could never get that unlock app to work for me. Works only on 2.1 right?

Worked on my stock 2.2

Works on every ported I9000 GB ROM I've tried so far too.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Hmm im stock 2.2 just rooted all I get is a bunch of F's

Theres a number code you put it (like you calling) I forget what that number was, but you put it in then a screen will come up saying if "Network Lock" is "[ON]" or "[OFF]"
If it says it is off then it does not matter if all u see is FFFFFF, you phone is unlocked. Same happen to me, I'm on T-Mobile right now.

Ya I know, it still says network lock on. I have an nv_data.bak file on my phone that says the size is 40.00 M in Astro file manager. Seems awfully big, but anyway. Ya, cant get it to work. No big deal I guess, no plans on going to T-mob, just wanted to show my aunt that she should can get this phone and use it on T-mob, her carrier.

worked on 2.3.3 too
Edit: The unlock is persistent even after I reflashed the ROM.

im having a problem with the app, everytime i try it i just get FFFFFFF and it doesnt work. i tried getting a new sim card and nada. it sucks cuz im on deployment and would really like to talk to the wife. any ideas?

Got root?.

1.root using superoneclick- make sure you download the one with the tool package included. you can do it on your pc if you have no market access. clshortfuse thanks.
2.unlock with helroz's program- you can get that without market access. thanks helroz
Note: you will need busy box and a wifi connection to run helroz's app.
i downloaded both of the above on my pc (apk files) then put them on my phone. i went to a hotel and got a wifi connection then ran helroz's program.
i unlocked in china with no sim. works like a charm. Trusselo gave me some good advice which is very simple: read the instructions for the superoneclick and unlocker. cant say this enough. also, donate to the developers. i donated and my johnson grew three inches.

can you please point to those apk files?

google "superoneclick CLShortFuse" then google "Galaxy_S_Unlock helroz" both results will lead you to the xda page which will lead you to the places to download the apk files. i had this problem in china with no market access and it worked for me. note: you will have to find a wifi connection for helroz's unlocker to work. both programs are super easy to use. if this helps please hit my thanks button. if you have any problems, you can pm me. i am a noob but i will try to help any way can.
also, if you get those apk files and they work, it is polite to donate to the developers. they have a little button that accepts paypal. those guys are really cool and even a small donation is a kind way of saying thanks.

One click Root APK for CDMA Hero

UPDATE: This has been confirmed as working
This is a direct port of my Eris one click app, with just a name change and recovery change. Should work fine. No PC, no nothing needed, but this apk. Please remember this is experimental, and since I have no hero it is untested. The eris community got so much from the Hero CMDA guys, thought I would send something back. If someone cares to test and let me know, I would appreciate it. If you are serious about wanting to test it, and want to see the source prior to testing I will provide it on request.
How it works. It used the symlink trick on mid.txt, then flashes recovery on root and extracts rootme.zip to your sdcard. Which has superuser.apk and su in it. This app doesn't have the best ui, and looks "dirty", but works great on the eris and I have no plans to update the look of it.
I believe this should work on all 2.1 hero, but most surely the Alltel one.
Preface, This is not a free app, its a try before you buy app. If this app works for you, and you are happy with it. You are required to donate a meal to a homeless youth, or any amount of money to a youth outreach type program.
This is a TeamAndIRC production.
I got bored and whipped this up tonight with ECLIPS3. This will root your Herp running 2.1 with 1 click.
If something doesn't work, don't freak just contact me, and we can figure it out.
This does NOT erase anything off your phone. You can keep you data/apps with this root!
Step 1) download and install this apk
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/heroroot010.apk - VERSION 0.1.0
Step 2) Run, read disclaimer, press button
Step 3) Reboot, once rebooted your phone should have Darchstar's recovery. Yay.
Step 4) Use the recovery to flash rootme.zip that is now on your SDCard, or the custom rom of your choice.
Step 5) Go into settings, and turn usb debugging on. After you have root, please uninstall this app.
Just that easy.
Please come chat with use at http://chat.andirc.net or irc.andirc.net #droideris if you have a separate IRC client.
Credit to:
Eclips3 for spending hours and hours and hours testing my crap. Without him this app wouldn't exist.
TopazAaron for the icon
wag3slav3 for the root method
DarchStar for the recovery image
erisuser1 for the post that gave me the idea.
and to the authors of flash_image and superuser.apk.
I'm going to test it in about 10 minutes (once my tester finishes charging).
My tester is currently running the 2.1 stock, .5 version, but the phone I want to root is a .6. Will this (theoretically, of course) work on both?
Looks good, I know there are still a lot of alltel users who are having trouble gaining root on their phones.

Long as the phone is vuln to th symlink trick, it should work.
Need a Tester for Root App
jcase and I need a tester that is willing to unroot their phone so that they can then test out a root app we made. It should work with minimal chance of brick, but would like someone to test it out for us.
The app has already been released in this section, so im going to link to the original post:

How could it brick it at all? I thought the only way was to flash a GSM radio

by flashing the wrong file to the phone thats not compatible. or having it get corrupted while flashing the recovery to the phone. its a very minimal chance of brick, like 0.0001% chance it bricks, but just wanted to give people a heads up before they risk putting their phones up for testing.
confirmed working, have fun.

I just ran the app on my 2.1 stock, .6 version, but I'm at work at can't tell if it's rooted or not. I'll try to post back after I get off work. I don't have a data connecetion at work so I can download an app and find out.
EDIT: IT WORKS!! I download titanium backup and it appears to be working fine.
BTW...my data connection was fine, it just doesn't seem to work while I have wifi on
Does this do 100% full root?
Works !!!
Thanks for this work,it is much appreciated
Thanks!
Worked nicely. Off to try new roms.
what is the difference in this and the other universal (meaning a bunch of phones) one click root app?
If you plan on staying on the rooted stock ROM, I recommend flashing my boot-patched.zip from my rooting thread to keep full root in adb shell.
is this for a rooted or non rooted phone? im sorry im new to droid
this is a way to root it. So, for an unrooted one to get root.
This was too stupidly easy.
I ran into some serious issues when I accidentally used the Unrevoked.apk on a .6 SW Build instead of .5 SW Build...and this fixed it. Well assuming my odex is going well behind the splash screen.
THANK YOU!
Will donate in a couple weeks when I get paid, for certain.
Do you put that ADK file on your SD card in the phone? Or install it on your comp first?
Put the .apk on.ur sdcard andbinstall it from a app managwr

Wow, that was unbelievably easy. Thank you. Now that I'm rooting, how do I get rid of the crap Sprint software like Sprint TV? I tried to uninstall and it wouldn't let me.

Hey everyone!
I'm finally glad to say that i have oficially become am Infuse owner and android junky! My buddy was able to get me the Infuse while in NY after many other attempts and heartbreak...
This thing is amazing! My first android phone and I love everything about it so far. Too be honest, the size isn't nearly as uncomfortable as i thought it could be. Feels great in the hand, bit slippery thought.
The next step is to unlock the sim which I believe i need to root it first yeah? When i root the device will change to vanilla Froyo or will touchwiz still be there? What will i lose in regards to apps and widgets and things like that?
I have seen two posts regarding rooting and sim unlocking so far. This is my first adroid device so this process is quite new to me. Would you all point in the right direction for which you believe is the best newb friendly for to root and sim unlock. I will be doing this first thing after work on Monday.
Thanks for all the helps as always!
I'm sooo excited...
First things first....
Find and download the latest Samsung Kies and install....this will give you the latest drivers to root using super one click...
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
Thanks!
When i plugged the device to my computer I saw that there were 3 options: Mass storage, media, and somthing about Kies. Do i need to download this on the device or on my computer? And then would i select the Kies option when connecting it to the computer? I know this all newb of me, but i do appreciate all the help.
you need to google kies find and install with out it you cant really root.
then head over to Android development and download both the root and unlock since you need it unlocked.
as regards for losing apps or touchwiz, they still will be there.

read the whole thread on unlocking. it may print the wrong line and not give you the proper unlock code. you may need to use adb to find it through instructions found in the thread. also you will need the usb drivers which will install with kies (unless you are on a mac then you dont need drivers for usb devices) but if you find the samsung drivers without kies that might be better.
when you root it will still be touchwiz. touchwiz is hard to get rid of, not that there is a point, it isnt a bad ui.
i actually used this to root and unlock. i subsequently tested it with a Tmob sim and it worked great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081072
but yeah, get the drivers first and then follow the instructions and you'll be well on your way to freedom!
Downloaded Kies
Dowloaded superoneclick v 1.9.1
When i open superoneclick, i have a few files like root, adb, driver...etc. There is also one that says superoneclick, do i click on this one and extract?
EDIT: I saw the other thread posted by lost1 that uses the Rage against the cage method. This has a root and unlock paired together which i'm thinking might be an easier way to go.

The Infuse is my first smartphone ever and im getting used to it too. I read about rooting and such and decided to do it. I used the super one click method and it was easy. I just downloaded and installed kies which recognized my phone then ran the superclick program and it was done. super easy. dont think it unlocked the sim but im not worried about that though.

Rooting T599N - MetroPCS ?

Ive tried looking for a rooting method for this phone and have not come up with anything, i ran across a page with a list of roms for it so there's got to be a way to root it, I'm not sure if i want to install a rom but what i do want is to uninstall some of the bloatware that comes installed on the phone..
Does anyone have a link for a guide on rooting this phone? and possibly a list of the apps that are safe to remove?
I tried to use the advanced search on this site but i was told it was unavailable..
Any help would be appreciated
Running
android 4.1.2
baseband T599NUVAMD4
Cydia Impactor
Cydia Impactor is working for me.

MRGSM
Hi.
I just registered so I could post to this thread =)
BRAND NOOB ALERT!
I've got the Metro PCS sgh-t599n
It has been rooted by my ex boyfriend
I seriously have been trying to unlock this bad boy for almost a month!
And I don't know what I'm doing SO MUCH, that trying to figure it out I accidentally got a Trojan virus on my step moms laptop she let me borrow (SMH-dad fixed that tho phew!)
Do you know how how I can unlock it??
I don't have one of those box thigs but I can connect it to my computer with USB
I have the T mobile sim card (and like a noobie) I activated (and paid for) prepaid service through them 3 wks ago... Sigh.
Guess I was a little over confident I would be able to figure this out lol I have definitely tried everything to find out how...
But I have already canceled my metro service and didn't have them for 3 months prior, so getting my network sim unlock code from Metro isn't an option
Also, (like a big giant noob) I thought I would be cute and try to guess it when I had some time to kill one day
SMH.
Now I may have made it to where I will need a PUK code also.
If you can help me with any advice or information, or even just point me in the right direction you would definitely be my hero at this point!
This is the longest I have ever been away from my 6 yr old and although we Skype often, if I am not home I have no way to reach me atm even tho I'm paying for service.
Boooo. Lol. Someone help the newbie!
Please and thank you =)

Root and sim unlock on mf3

I'm posting this simple guide compiled from various posts all over the internet on how to SIM unlock the gs4-i337 AFTER you installed the MF3 base-band ota. I have personally confirmed this works on the At&t GS4 I337 on MF3 baseband, I do not know about other variants I take no credit in any of this I am not a developer (yet) all credit goes to them, your welcome to thank me but if you do please thank them too. I will post all my sources at the bottom of this post
ALSO note to MODS,
If I happen to have posted this in the wrong section you may feel free to move it and I will not complain, I do not have many posts on XDA,
Step 1. ROOT the phone. How? Thanks to Jortex we can now root on MF3 update
Step1A. Insert a micro SD card into your computer, you may need a mini/micro adapter to fit it. use an sd card you have nothing on or move the files over to your computer because we will be formatting the card and you wil loose everything on it.
Step1B. (I only know how to do this on windows, you can research mac or linux) Go to computer (or my computer on older systems) right click and click format, have quick format selected and under file system click the down arrow and select exFAT (this is very IMPORTANT or it will not work)
Step 1C. download this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2165629&d=1375669716 (link copied from Jortex thread)
Step 1D Extract the file into the now exFAT formatted SD card, if you need an extractor I suggest 7-zip which was created by a non-xda devoloper but one that still deserves mad props Igor Pavlov you can grab his program at http://www.7-zip.org/
Step1E. Download Android Terminal Emulator from the play store to your device here is a quick link
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en and I would tell you to thank Jack Palevich however I dont think he has an xda account either (I could be wrong) regardless go and give him 5 stars on the market for this great terminal
Step 1F. Pop your exFAT SD with the root files into your phone and open android terminal
Step1G. Type the following into the terminal exactly, PRESS ENTER AFTER EACH LINE, ITS CASE SENSITIVE ITS SPACE SENSITIVE DONT FORGET PERIODS IT MUST BE EXACT AFTER EACH LINE PRESS ENTER DO NOT SAY IT DIDN'T WORK IF YOU TYPED THE COMMAND WRONG
cd /mnt/extSdCard
./pwn
./script.sh
I know im stating obvious here but youd be surprised how many people can get this wrong so
after cd there is a space this is the only space
the S and the C in SdCard are capital nothing else is capital
there is a period in ./pwn
there is also a period before ./script.sh
Thats it, if your rooted you'll notice that your $ in terminal emulater has changed to a #, reboot the device go and update SUPERSU and go thank chainfire for making SUPERSU and the next app im about to discus too!
Congrats now your rooted on MF3, but your still locked, well your in luck thanks to the greatest XDA DEV in my opinion (sorry devs but this guy has made my android life so much easier then anyone else your all really good hardworking devs, but this guy is amazing) yes I'm talking about the one and only chainfire, the devoloper of apps like SuperSU TriangleAway, CF-AutoRoot and about a dozen other amazing apps has now created an app made called [root] RegionLock Away which you can eaither "buy him half a beer" and purchase it at the playstore here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.regionlockaway&hl=en or he also offers it free on his xda post (link coppied from xda) http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2370437&d=1383564029 Chainfire thought he made a region unlock app for the note 3, and while that may be true apparently its also a sim-unlock for the galaxy s4, there is already a post here on xda saying this app works but they seemed to have failed to mention that the phone must be rooted and how to root it, regardless you can still go thank egolabbakhsh for testing this on his device and giving me the confidence to try it, I also would like to thank tanvir islam because it was actully his comment on the app that said it unlocked his S4 that made me look in this direction, I'm not going to post a link to his google+ page because I don't know if he wants 10million people thanking him or not but regardless I thought I'd mention his name And most of all I would Like to thank Josh as being the man who let me test and confirm this method on his phone, not sure what his XDA handle is but I'll update this when I find out.
Okay now that Is all out of the way the rest is super easy
Open RegionLock Away
Grant SuperUser Permission
Press Region Unlock
YOURR DONE!!! CONGRATS!!! it works...set up your new sims apn to get internet+mms and your golden:good:
Now here are all the original XDA POSTS
First Jortex for root method

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470551
And Finally

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514607
GO AND THANK THEM ALL AND IF YOU HAVE TIME LEFT THANK ME TOO!!!

Do you know if I'll be able to unroot it after unlocking it and keep it unlocked?
@majicmazo
If you are referring to my thread about the unlock on MK2 by downgrading to MF3 or lower I stated you must root the phone. It is outlined in the steps. A much easier root method was to use Saferoot for the Verizon S4. All I'm saying is my thread title says "must be rooted".

No idea...My guess is no but I havent tried this on NC1...though I think region lock away wasn't made for 4.4..Honestly though if your already rooted I would just go ahead and try it region lock has never caused me any danger ive tried it on other devices and failed and that's all that happens it just doesn't work.

Actually no I wasn't referring to your post at all, I said who I was reffering to, it was egolabbakhsh, and it was a post titled "GOOD NEWS I337 MF3 SIM unlock!". I made this for the people who where already on MF3..Your post still guides them how to get to it...But like I said all I really did was compile various posts into one and tried my best to thoroughly explain them..Also back when I posted this in 2013 I had no idea about saferoot...It is my most used root method now days though.:cyclops:

[Q]Rooted/flashed Samsung Galaxy s3 Having some errors and i issues.

Ok so i'm am extremely new to this cell phone world. Long story short.. bought a Sprint white Samsung galaxy s3 which is upgraded to jelly bean 4.4.2 from a personal buyer.. Called sprint, her balance is outstanding and they have put the phones IMED number on the "bad esn" list. needless to say i couldn't put the phone on any carrier or sprint carrier til the balance was paid off.
So i did what anyone without a clue would do and i googled a way around it, and i got the "how to root/flash your Samsung galaxy s3 phone" Followed the instructions word for word.
Downloaded Odin
Downloaded team recovery and did NOT unzip the file.
- Put the Team Recovery Folder in my Phones internal memory
Download CMW file
- Put in the Odin slot for PA
Everything went according to plan. odio said it passed, i successfully flashed it, and i got to the boot loader and was able to install the team recovery. Phone rebooted.
The phone now had Superuser on it. clicked on it and a notice came up "unfortunately Superuser has stopped working"
So googled the problem and someone said to download "Root checker basic." Which came up with the error "Sorry! this device does not have proper root access."
So again i googled.. and go "download SuperSU" so i did... and got the message "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! ---If you just upgraded to android 4.3, you need to manually re-root consult the relevant forums for your device."
Sooo now i'm stuck.. because all i really want from this phone is: Pictures, Videos, Download game apps, Calling, Text, Web and WiFi.. not really interested in all the fancy ROM hacks. so far i have 5/7 the only problem is i don't have calling or text simply because i cant figure out how to put a Service carrier on my phone? do i buy a time card and enter the serial code in? do i call the straight talk company? Or did the root fail and i will never be able to put a cell phone carrier on the phone? at this point my knowledge about phone shows.. which is small. I have been reading for days. Yes i am getting to a point where i am comfortable with rooting.. but at this point i want to avoid a "brick" as much as possible.. and have no idea how to "re-root" a device that is already "rooted" without the fear of a "brick". So if anyone out there knows how to help please let me know. thanks so much

You can try to reroot your phone using Kingo Tool. Talking about IMEI problems, Chimera Tool will definitely help you.

You can unroot your phone with Kingo and then root it again. BUT... rooting will not solve the problem of getting phone service. If I understood right, your IMEI is in black list and you can't call or send SMS, so to solve the problem you should change your IMEI, which is illegal. Chimera tool can do that, but if you will change your IMEI, then it'll be probably good idea to use one of your old phone's IMEI that is not in use, so it will not match with any other phones IMEI that are in use. Dial *#06# to see your IMEI.

Well I'm not sure, but I think that it can be identified if two exactly the same IMEIs are in use. If you will use your old phone's IMEI that is not in use, then it SHOULD be okay. I can tell you that I know a guy, who bought a phone and his IMEI went suddenly to black list. So he changed his IMEI which he took from his old phone and now it is okay and he has not been caught, even though he was a bit scared. You can be sure that there is no other exactly the same IMEI, if you take it from your old phone, but don't use your old phone anymore.
Do you know what version of supersu you tried? Had the same issue flashing cwm_supersu_v0.94.zip
Used update_supersu_v1.94.zip, went through the whole update binaries thing and it worked like a charm.
(version names may not be exact)

If I understood right, you already called sprint once and they know that you bought the phone. You can try to call them and discuss your situation, but I doubt that they will unlock the phone if they don't get the bill payed - still worth a try, because they know you have the phone. But if they want you to pay instead of someone else who should pay, then I would not agree to that.
Just in case, find their homepage, if it exists, where you should have an opportunity to check if your IMEI is indeed in blacklist.
