I just want to make sure the following steps are correct to unlock carrier network before I start messing around with my new samsung captivate.
1. Use one click root
2. Flash Clockwork Custom Recovery
3. Lastly follow the [REF] How to unlock/unfreeze all SGS Models [NOW WORKS ON Vibrant 4G] post.
What is the purpose of step 2? why do I have to flash some custom software? And how stable are the updates after 2.2 update? I am wondering if I should even mess around with CyanogenMod 7, which is a mod, as far as I understand, that updates the phone to android 2.3
I tried researching on these topics but there is such a bulk amount of information that it's kinda hard to consolidate everything and fully understand it. Help out a noob!
After you root your phone, just download the Galaxy S Unlock from the market. Follow the steps on there, which is pretty much just a click and a reboot, and you're unlocked.

Be sure to get the one called "Galaxy_S Unlock" The Author is Helroz
actually I forgot to mention, but I am taking this phone to Europe and I don't have a SIM that works in the US to access the market.
try to connect to internet from a wifi connection and download busybox and sgs unlock by helroz.
step 1. Root your phone
step 2. download and install busybox from market.
step 3. download and install run sgs unlock by helroz. then follow the steps in the screen. with this app you dont need another simcard, it is simple and easy
now you can enjoy.

Hmm im stock 2.2 just rooted all I get is a bunch of F's
Theres a number code you put it (like you calling) I forget what that number was, but you put it in then a screen will come up saying if "Network Lock" is "[ON]" or "[OFF]"
If it says it is off then it does not matter if all u see is FFFFFF, you phone is unlocked. Same happen to me, I'm on T-Mobile right now.

The stock files Helroz's app saved on mine are 2.00MB (2097152). On T-Mo 2G Edge is the limit for Cappy's data rate.

Edit: The unlock is persistent even after I reflashed the ROM.
im having a problem with the app, everytime i try it i just get FFFFFFF and it doesnt work. i tried getting a new sim card and nada. it sucks cuz im on deployment and would really like to talk to the wife. any ideas?

1.root using superoneclick- make sure you download the one with the tool package included. you can do it on your pc if you have no market access. clshortfuse thanks.
2.unlock with helroz's program- you can get that without market access. thanks helroz

can you please point to those apk files?
google "superoneclick CLShortFuse" then google "Galaxy_S_Unlock helroz" both results will lead you to the xda page which will lead you to the places to download the apk files. i had this problem in china with no market access and it worked for me. note: you will have to find a wifi connection for helroz's unlocker to work. both programs are super easy to use. if this helps please hit my thanks button. if you have any problems, you can pm me. i am a noob but i will try to help any way can.
also, if you get those apk files and they work, it is polite to donate to the developers. they have a little button that accepts paypal. those guys are really cool and even a small donation is a kind way of saying thanks.
Just bought a Nexus s 4g today from sprint and got rid of my HTC EVO 4G which i had for almost a year and been rooted pretty much that whole time.
just a couple quick questions regarding the SNS.
Since this is internal memory and no sd card how do i add music bring all my pics and videos back from my computer? Only thing i could think of is download some sort of program. ( the one for evo was called "HTC SYNC")
And some other questions about root. Since i just bought it today and its at version 2.3.4 is it able to be rooted or am i locked out of it cause there last update?
i also saw the guide to root and saw that theres different versions ( like I90xxxx) how do i figure out which version nexus i have.

This phone is not Motorola or HTC. Those phones come with a locked bootloader which disallows you to tamper with rooting / flashing ROMs. To do that on those phones, you need a exploit.
Now this is what i meant by.. the Nexus devices come with a unlockable bootloader. Just follow the guide.
edit: Best root method? Uh.. rooting couldn't get any easier than a Nexus device. It's ENCOURAGED to be tampered with.
1. get drivers installed
2. go into bootloader mode
3. fastboot oem unlock
4. accept the terms
5. fastboot flash recovery whatever-recovery-name-is.img
6. go into CWM and flash su.zip
7. done you're stock rooted.
optional: download ROM & kernel, radio update (if there is one. I don't follow NS4G)

Yeah ok. The only edit I did was to make the job EASIER FOR YOU by linking the stickied thread. I didn't have to do it, but I did it because I wanted to be nice.

Lol, Why are you getting upset? I gave what you asked for as well as including additional background information in regards to the bootloader. No reason to get a attitude. You didn't properly read what I said before responding.
You should double read things before you post. The only edit I did was to provide the link of the stickied thread to make the rooting process for YOU easier.
Nothing else was changed/removed. I included information saying that its a unlockable device, so the same rooting method will always work regardless of the Android verison before it was editted. And I edit my posts rather than double posting it because well, I believe its apart of the rules? And its apart of Forums 101. That's why the edit option is there.

I have heard about a phone being rooted or not rooted for sometime now and I decided to look into what it meant today. I've decided that I would like to root my LG Optimus V after reading quite a few articles regarding why I should root the phone. I am hoping to get rid of the unnecessary applications that can not be moved to the SD card; it stops me from downloading apps that I'd like to have.
I saw the guide to rooting this phone and I am good at following instructions and have more than average computer experience but I don't know anything about the android system or cell phone rooting.
Under the what you need, I am embarrassed to admit that I don't know what "ADB installed and working" is! I definitely want to learn more and attempt this but am unsure what to do next. Take it on? Some of what I have read about this is almost like another language. I appreciate any and all of your assistance.

I am on my phone, so it's hard to give you links, but in the Android developers, there is a guidde for setting up ADB. The most hardest part is wait the download time and slow instalation process to make it running. You need a 60 MB file, install it (the longest thing), and some files, Wich are less than 10 MB, extract it to the right folder and you're done.

Don't do something if you're not sure that it will succeed. Rooting caused me to soft brick my Samsung Galaxy S and I barely managed to save it. There's no guarantee that it will save you if it happens. Just warning you. If you root your device however, you do get a whole new experience of Android. Weigh this out, and try it.

If its anything like the Optimus T, it can easily be rooted by just downloading z4root app and running it
Edit: if its running 2.2.1, z4root works. but if the firmware is 2.2.2 and beyond, then ADB is your method
Do your research. If you decide to do anything to your phone I repeat do your research. Google is your best friends, literally type your question when you have one and find the answer. Get a notepad read threads, watch youtube "how to's" using google put in quotes "HOW TO ROOT" "HOW TO _____" etc. Don't attempt anything till your sure and if something goes wrong don't make the mistake of thinking well I'll do this, this makes sence. You can easily brick your phone doing whAT you think "makes sence" last write the steps down on your note pad with links etc. Make instructions for yourself. If you do all this and you still aren't sure then you aren't ready

Easy guide to ADB setup with screenies
the best method i know of is to use super one click root a simple google search will find you the program easily. I have rooted several devices with no fails using this method
Rooted Devices:
-Zte Blade
-Vodafone 858
-samsung galaxy s2
-motorola droid x
-and more
The process only involves this
1) Switch on usb debugging rom the phones settings
2) connect the usb to the phone and pc
3) click the root button on the program wait for it to root
4) reboot the phone and you will have rooted the device
a good way to make sure that you have root access on your phone is to download root checker rom the market, this app will tell you if you have root access or not mate

For some reason, I thought I was not 2.2.2 but the phone was upstairs when I checked this message so I wasn't sure. Of course, since it is more difficult to do, I DO HAVE 2.2.2. !
I hadn't seen the new posts yet as I've been moved to this forum (Sorry I didn't get that right!) and I see that killall has provided the link to ADB I was going to ask for. I see that there are other posts, too, and I will definitely read them now.
One other question! If I get stuck somewhere, which part of the forum do I need? Not that I expect to but it's best to be prepared!

I need to go through them and compare for consistency and try to understand the why's behind the how's! Also, thank you for what should have been obvious - using YouTube videos; I just use them for music and when someone sends me something funny; I've never thought of You Tube as a "How to" source. A big thank you for that.

Any idea why they'd say it's on the list for Super One Click and then to try something else first? I'll try to find the quote on that one.
I did try to find out if my phone is rooted or not by using a program downloaded to my phone from the Android Market called Connectbot. The directions from the website were to follow the directions with the download carefully and I would end up with either a * or a #; one meaning rooted and the other not rooted. (I could be wrong about the * and # - it could have been different symbols.) There were no instructions with the download and the screen that comes up is nothing I am even slightly familiar with; it asks me to "Use the quick-connect box to connect to a host." Totally unfamiliar with that.
Can you suggest a simple program to see if my phone is rooted or not?

As for super one click saying that the phone should be rooted in another way i have no idea why maybe because a dev has fixed an app to root the phone
for example when rooting my zte blade the method that i was supposed to use was using a modified app i skipped the app and used super one click to root. I did this because i have more confidence using super one click than a modified app.
When rooting a phone there will be no extra benefits when using another method since once the phone has been rooted they have all the same benefits
I'm very new to the process of modifying android/firmware/rooting/etc... I want to regain FoxFi (wifi tether) functionality on my Verizon HTC One M8, which was lost with Lollipop. I had been fighting the update for months but it forced itself on me a few weeks ago. I believe my only real option is downgrading to Kit Kat.
I have a long post typed up with my plethora of questions after browsing around a number of forums and blogs the last few weeks, but there are so many basic terms, commands and things I don't understand... I figured it might make things go smoother if I just ask my stupid questions first and then proceed. Plus, I'm an engineer and am generally good with technology, and have wanted to pick up the skills needed to do software version changes/rooting etc for years now. I'll keep the other post typed up (took a while), but won't send it until I get some feedback here... so as to avoid undue spam and clutter.
So, with that all said, dumb question time. Please be kind, lol. Note - if there is an entry level video/picture-laden tutorial that will likely explain all of this, please point me that way and I'll get up to speed as much as i can on my own. There seem to be many tutorials out there but almost all of the One M8 ones seem to have lots of terminology in them I don't get ,yet:
1) What is an RUU?
2) What is the CID? (appears to just be a build # or software version associated with new updates)
3) What is the fastboot folder? What is "hboot"
4) Whats an ADSP?
5) Which SDK/Sync manager will I need on my PC? I have the basic HTC Sync manager (some links suggest its needed)

Well, hate to burst your bubble, but even after understanding all of these terms you can't downgrade to kit kat after taking the lollipop update. On Verizon htc ones, all system partitions/folders/files are write protected and cannot be modified with fastboot or RUU's in order to downgrade. As of right now, the only way to remove the write protection on lollipop is with an HTC Java card (this process / state is called s-off). Several people on xda have them and might help you out, particularly dottat.
Sorry for ignoring the main question here, I'm just offering what I know and I'll leave the explaining to someone a bit more knowledgeable with htc stuff to answer those questions. (I'm stuck in the same "lollipop lockdown" boat as you)

You can downgrade back to 4.4.4 as long as you are S-off. It takes some patience to root and get sunshine to S-off. Just make sure you do not try to run an RUU (Rom Update Utility) of an earlier version if you are still S-ON. I would say that if you just want to wifi tether, S-off your phone, flash a recovery, then just flash a 5.1 Rom that has wifi tether working out of the box.

As far as what i'm looking for... with Lollipop, tethering itself works, but they make you go through the verizon service (whereas past Android versions could be bypassed with some certificate trickery, which is what Foxfi did), and I don't want to pay $30/mo for something i was getting for free the last 3 years. I also want to root the phone for a few other applications.
I'm not sure what 5.1 Roms would support FoxFi on this phone out of the box (i've heard Samsung's Galaxy S6 continues to support foxfi with verizon and Lollipop, but i'm not sure i could use that rom), which is why 4.4.4 might be easier.
Questions:
1) Is the above order right?
2) Can you disable fastboot with Lollipop? I didn't see the option when i tried.. and i'm seeing some places online saying you can't. What then?
3) I downloaded ADB.. how to you get a command prompt up when connected to the one that lets you send commands to it? Seems basic but ADB has a milllion settings.
4) What else am i forgetting?
Just trying to figure out the first steps... its easy for a newbie to get buried in walkthroughs and new terms. Thanks again!

I'm not sure what 5.1 Roms would support FoxFi on this phone out of the box (i've heard Samsung's Galaxy S6 continues to support foxfi with verizon and Lollipop, but i'm not sure i could use that rom), which is why 4.4.4 might be easier.
Questions:
1) Is the above order right?
2) Can you disable fastboot with Lollipop? I didn't see the option when i tried.. and i'm seeing some places online saying you can't. What then?
3) I downloaded ADB.. how to you get a command prompt up when connected to the one that lets you send commands to it? Seems basic but ADB has a milllion settings.
4) What else am i forgetting?
Just trying to figure out the first steps... its easy for a newbie to get buried in walkthroughs and new terms. Thanks again!

When it comes time to flash a ROM, I'd humbly suggest CleanROM. It's stock ROM with the Verizon bloatware removed, and it's already rooted for your convenience. Like you, my primary reason for installing a custom ROM was to be able to use my phone as a hotspot. (Verizon will have to pry my unlimited data plan from my cold, dead hands.) CleanROM's native tethering app works out of the box, so there's no need to even install a third-part app like FoxFi. Sadly, it appears that the developer is no longer supporting this ROM, but it's suiting my needs for the time being.
Anyway, I just purchased a used M8 running stock Lollipop last week and here's what I did:
1. Followed the directions here to achieve s-off. (There's nothing in these directions about disabling fastboot.)
2. RUU (because the phone was used and I have no idea what the previous owner did to this thing and I want to start fresh); I followed dodtat's instructions for Option 1, plopped the 0P6BIMG.zip file on my SD card, and let the phone do the rest.
3. Installed a custom recovery (the latest version of TWRP - installation instructions are on the linked page)
4. Installed CleanROM via TWRP
5. Enjoyed free tethering

As far as what i'm looking for... with Lollipop, tethering itself works, but they make you go through the verizon service (whereas past Android versions could be bypassed with some certificate trickery, which is what Foxfi did), and I don't want to pay $30/mo for something i was getting for free the last 3 years. I also want to root the phone for a few other applications.

You can use tethering for free on lollipop with s-off.
Not sure about foxfi but with the stock Verizon app.

Just to be clear... the 3rd step (of 21) in that first link you show is "RUU". Does this mean I should do it twice (and if so.. with different versions?), or will one RUU do it?
Sounds like his method to achieving S-off is just a series of checking the right buttons within a factory reset phone. Is that right?

Hmm, really? Interesting. Stock verizon app works fine, only used foxfi because in the past its met my needs.
Quick question... I've downloaded the java developer kit, ADB, and Android Studio. How do I verify they're working when i connect the phone? Is there a way to send a harmless ping/command/etc to the phone to check?
Few more questions regarding the s-off instructions:
1. Just did a factory reset. Also deleted everything on the SD card. Questions
a) Is a straight delete on the sd card ok or do i need to format? IF the latter, what do i format to?
b) How to I check the 'status' of the bootloader? Is that in one of the hard reset/fastboot menus? Or can i just let the thing start up and check it in the system menu somewhere?

Just followed quite the droid root alice in wonderland rabbit hole...
Found some old S-off procedures but they appear to be defunct, which led me back to the 'sunshine' s-off approach you listed.
I followed the sunshine approach listed (the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61920423&postcount=3652)
and get to:
File Manager App -> Install KingRoot (accept google checking apps)
Open KingRoot - Hit Root (read notes section at this point) and repeat until it says you have it in this app.
Back out of KingRoot, and uninstall the P~~~ whatever app and the KingUser app it installed by dragging from the app drawer into the uninstall icon.

I didn't RUU twice. I just did a factory reset before following the s-off instructions. You actually have to be s-off before using the specific RUU that I linked to.

SD card should be formatted FAT32.

No, that's the wrong file. Use that standalone zip if you want to RUU, but you have to be s-off before using the standalone zip that dodtat posted.

Keep trying to get root with Kingroot. It will eventually work, but it takes time and patience. And Purity is the name of the app that Kingroot will install after it gains root.

Kingroot is part of those instructions... do I need to root before using sunshine? And is sunshine what finally achieves the s-off?
Will kingroot work prior to achieving s-off? (seems like it would have to given the instructions in the link above.. given enough tries). My first attempt using kingroot said root wasn't available, but the link above suggests I may need to just keep trying / uninstall+reinstall / etc to get it to work.

Ok... some progress!
After 4 tries, Kingroot finally did its thing and reports I'm rooted.
In the link to achieve S-off, the app Sunshine is mentioned. Just bought a sunshine license for $25... why not.
Or not.
Despite Kingroot saying its rooted and Sunshine initially saying it had gained root and that my phone had passed all the pre-tests, now that i've spent the $25 its saying its "Unable to gain root access to your device. You may need to gain "TEmpRoot" or "PermRoot" through some other means. For HTC devices, unlocking with HTCDev.comand rooting with a custom recovery may work."

I have an HTCDev account but when I get to step 5 in the unlocking bootloader process, I haven't been able to get my command propt commands to work. See images below...
By re-rooting with Kingroot Sunshine did its thing... after it finished the app disappeared. When I do a Volume down+power, it does show my software status as "modified", so I guess I'm making progress.
So is now when I put the said 0P6BIMG.zip on the sd card and let the phone find it? And as specific as we can be as to which file this needs to be is appreciated... thanks
lol so I re-rooted (again) and re-downloaded sunishine (because, like i said, after it did its thing it deleted itself), and its confirmed I'm S-Off.
I'm downloading dottat's "DOTTAT_VZWM8_S_OFF_5.0.1_RUU.zip", which is about 1.6GB. This is what I put on the SDcard, rename 0P6BIMG.zip, and 'flash' that right?

Make sure the BIMG.zip is in the root of your sd card (in no folder) then load hboot and it'll detect the .zip and flash from there. Yes.

LOL there isn't even a CF auto root for the N920V!! He seriously just took the same one we already have for console root and renamed it! They're even the same exact size, haha. Besides, where does he think the SuperSU app is coming from? It sure ain't from the file he has posted because that's just the console root kernel and that doesn't install/ flash SuperSU it only flashes the boot.img..

Even on the easy-firmware website he posted this same exact thing and when a user asked him a question he didn't even know the answer and told the user to flash and report back with his findings.. I know this website, easy firm ware listed above, to be a scam site. I've seen a lot of different angles they've tried INCLUDING a download manager quote unquote that is supposed to help you finish downloading. But this is a trojan app. While I never fired it up I can tell you it doesn't look like something a windows user should execute on their system. I use linux.
(mods I promise I know this site is a scam site I've watched them work over the past couple months as I researched my studies)
Regards to root. If you are patched for dirtycow good luck getting root on this phone. (see below for dirtycow patch details) The AT&T / Verizon variants of the Note 5 are extremely well coded you can't get root on them without a powerful exploit. With dirtycow available the days are numbered for any phones not patched, of course not patching your phone in the meantime means you are very vulnerable to a nasty exploit.
So how long right? I dunno but it could be awhile.
Patch details:
Google says the fix is called CVE-2016-5195 patched 11-05-2016, however my security patch level is Nov 1st, 2016. The Samsung SVE-2016-7504 is stated to be included in November's patches and there are 14 patches in that set. AT&T N920AUCS4CPK1 has a note about 14 patches from Samsung, the exact number. (so I seem to be patched if I follow the logic even though Google responded on 11/05/2016 but I dunno how to confirm what's in this Nov 1 2016 security patch in the PK1 firmware.)
It doesn't really matter if they've patched it, you can still downgrade your firmware and security level - even on this variant. I used to go between Marshmallow and Lollipop, as it was required by the ps3 controller app.

Which part are you saying you can downgrade? You can't take the Lollipop firmware and flash it if you're currently on the latest firmware update. It will just fall in odin.

It's not impossible, you just need to use an official firmware and may need to downgrade the bootloader.

Uh, Sir, the link you just posted.. *I* am the original poster of that and I'm telling you with official firmware you still CANNOT go from the latest firmware update of Marshmallow back to Lollipop! I even stated in my OP that it's not going to once you accept the BPI3 firmware update you're done and stuck on Marshmallow with no way to go back not even if you follow my original instructions it won't work!! The bootloader is no longer downgradeable thanks to Verizon!
Dirty cow or not is irrelevant. We can upgrade or downgrade and we're able to root this phone just like any other variant.
The only issue is the bootloader's signature checking.

There's a simply check for a value that they are calling a binary number. What is that? Certain versions will work together but past a certain point something changes. (most often the security storage binaries) .. So the bootloader checks to see if binary # >= current firmware binaries ... If you are on S3 binary and you attempt to flash S2 binaries the bootloader newly rejects this.
I can and have written a tool to over come this problem but there is one catch. system.img is too large for me to hack into place in this way. If I can't rewrite system.img then we are still stuck. ;*(
So what am I doing? I need root so I can just dd write system.img from /sdcard/ to the partition. that's it..
Stop listening to people who are not spending all their free time looking at the Note 5.. I already have too much access for the Note 5 to survive now.. It's going down, it is not the super secure device that will refuse to boot 'ever again' if you modify stuff that Samsung tried to claim.. that was lies and nonsense (don't hack BOTA0 or BOTA1 though)... I haven't tested changes to this partitions, all others have suffered a beating from me. (if you disable certain packages without disabling other packages it will refuse to boot, no wiping will help, reflash time)

Would flashing the tar file in the OP give me the ability with ADB to delete, rename or change the bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg files? All I want to do is swap those out for another set. Would I then need to flash something else to bring it back to normal?

You seem to have a good grasp on the situation and seem to talk sense, so I'll just ask a question. I'm only passing through because I needed some info, but got interested in the thread.
It seems you have the eng boot for the device, but not able to get system to mount rw? Strange because I have checked it and it is a bonafide eng boot.
Anyway I don't own this device, but I thought I'd just share some info that allowed others to get root on a few recent ATT devices with locked bootloaders on MM.
Using Kingroot on the said devices would not work, no matter how many times or which version was used. However flashing the eng boot from the combination firmware (so not even full eng boot as no root shell with adb) and then using Kingroot, Kingroot was able to successfully root these devices even though with some it took several tries. Kingroot was then used to convert to Supersu.
This may have been tried already, but I couldn't see it. Someone tried it with stock, but not using the eng binary.
The combination eng binary allows the device to boot in permissive mode with no dm-verity, but doesn't have a root shell or any write access with adb. The full eng boot you have should do the same obviously with the addition of adb root shell.
It's just for info and I'm not claiming it will work on Verizon devices, but it seems to be pretty successful on ATT and Tracfone devices.
