UPDATE: This has been confirmed as working
This is a direct port of my Eris one click app, with just a name change and recovery change. Should work fine. No PC, no nothing needed, but this apk. Please remember this is experimental, and since I have no hero it is untested. The eris community got so much from the Hero CMDA guys, thought I would send something back. If someone cares to test and let me know, I would appreciate it. If you are serious about wanting to test it, and want to see the source prior to testing I will provide it on request.
How it works. It used the symlink trick on mid.txt, then flashes recovery on root and extracts rootme.zip to your sdcard. Which has superuser.apk and su in it. This app doesn't have the best ui, and looks "dirty", but works great on the eris and I have no plans to update the look of it.
I believe this should work on all 2.1 hero, but most surely the Alltel one.
Preface, This is not a free app, its a try before you buy app. If this app works for you, and you are happy with it. You are required to donate a meal to a homeless youth, or any amount of money to a youth outreach type program.
This is a TeamAndIRC production.
I got bored and whipped this up tonight with ECLIPS3. This will root your Herp running 2.1 with 1 click.
If something doesn't work, don't freak just contact me, and we can figure it out.
This does NOT erase anything off your phone. You can keep you data/apps with this root!
Step 1) download and install this apk
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8699733/heroroot010.apk - VERSION 0.1.0
Step 2) Run, read disclaimer, press button
Step 3) Reboot, once rebooted your phone should have Darchstar's recovery. Yay.
Step 4) Use the recovery to flash rootme.zip that is now on your SDCard, or the custom rom of your choice.
Step 5) Go into settings, and turn usb debugging on. After you have root, please uninstall this app.
Just that easy.
Please come chat with use at http://chat.andirc.net or irc.andirc.net #droideris if you have a separate IRC client.

I'm going to test it in about 10 minutes (once my tester finishes charging).
My tester is currently running the 2.1 stock, .5 version, but the phone I want to root is a .6. Will this (theoretically, of course) work on both?
Looks good, I know there are still a lot of alltel users who are having trouble gaining root on their phones.

Long as the phone is vuln to th symlink trick, it should work.
Need a Tester for Root App
jcase and I need a tester that is willing to unroot their phone so that they can then test out a root app we made. It should work with minimal chance of brick, but would like someone to test it out for us.
The app has already been released in this section, so im going to link to the original post:

How could it brick it at all? I thought the only way was to flash a GSM radio

by flashing the wrong file to the phone thats not compatible. or having it get corrupted while flashing the recovery to the phone. its a very minimal chance of brick, like 0.0001% chance it bricks, but just wanted to give people a heads up before they risk putting their phones up for testing.
confirmed working, have fun.

I just ran the app on my 2.1 stock, .6 version, but I'm at work at can't tell if it's rooted or not. I'll try to post back after I get off work. I don't have a data connecetion at work so I can download an app and find out.
EDIT: IT WORKS!! I download titanium backup and it appears to be working fine.
BTW...my data connection was fine, it just doesn't seem to work while I have wifi on
Does this do 100% full root?
Works !!!
Thanks for this work,it is much appreciated
Thanks!
Worked nicely. Off to try new roms.
what is the difference in this and the other universal (meaning a bunch of phones) one click root app?
If you plan on staying on the rooted stock ROM, I recommend flashing my boot-patched.zip from my rooting thread to keep full root in adb shell.
is this for a rooted or non rooted phone? im sorry im new to droid
this is a way to root it. So, for an unrooted one to get root.
This was too stupidly easy.
I ran into some serious issues when I accidentally used the Unrevoked.apk on a .6 SW Build instead of .5 SW Build...and this fixed it. Well assuming my odex is going well behind the splash screen.
THANK YOU!
Will donate in a couple weeks when I get paid, for certain.
Do you put that ADK file on your SD card in the phone? Or install it on your comp first?
Put the .apk on.ur sdcard andbinstall it from a app managwr

Wow, that was unbelievably easy. Thank you. Now that I'm rooting, how do I get rid of the crap Sprint software like Sprint TV? I tried to uninstall and it wouldn't let me.

So, as you may or may not have heard, the Sprint Hero has been rooted via CVE-2009-3547. FlashRec has been updated to support backing up (and hopefully flashing - though that has not been tested) the recovery image on the Sprint Hero.
If you just want a root shell, you can use the "asroot2" binary from the FlashRec apk like: "asroot2 /system/bin/sh".
Hopefully the budding Sprint Hero firmware makers will start making firmwares for you guys to enjoy now - and a custom recovery image FlashRec can flash
Let me know about problems with FlashRec 1.1.3-20091107 on your Sprint Hero - I'll try to fix them, though fixes may be a bit slow due to me not owning a Sprint Hero, and being too lazy to flash a vulnerable kernel.
Note that HTC will patch this problem in future updates.
Aha, the man himself! This should probably be made the official thread now...
So is it that there's more than just the radio that's different about our CDMA phones?
Also, is there a guide or anything on how to make ROMs? I'd be glad to work on porting some (and testing as needed).
Awesome!
This is my FIRST post, and rooting for Sprint Hero is the reason I came to XDA!
I'm posted on this thread to see what everyone thinks/does because I am completely new to this coming over from BlackBerry!
Thanks again!

Ok, and just how does one run asroot? I've installed flashrec.apk, made backup of the recovery rom. I know that i should be able to upload a new rom (one someone makes one that it is) but I just want a root shell. extracting the asroot2 binary, putting it on the sd card and trying to run it is a no go

/sdcard is noexec by default - the easiest place to use is /data/local/ from adb shell. You can put asroot2 there, chmod 0755 asroot2, then run it.
I've also uploaded http://zenthought.org/tmp/superuser-for-stock.zip but I have not tested it on a Sprint Hero (works in the 1.5 emulator, though.)
It's a bit annoying to install, but nothing too bad.
That file may change as people report bugs (if there are any).

Will this work on the Verizon Eris?
Hello...
I am a long time WM user, but thinking about converting to droid (via a Verizon Eris) ... anyone know if this will give me root on the Verizon version?
Bravo, XDA NEVER disappoints.
I've been keeping an update on these forums for the past weeks since I got my Hero on launch. This is the moment I've been waiting for. This is why I even registered for an account here on XDA.
I'm very tech savvy, but how exactly do I simply get root access within the stock firmware to do apps2sd and wifi tether and other brilliant things.
I've installed the .apk provided, and backed up my rom to my sdcard. But I'm clueless on what exactly to do next.
Any help is appreciated, I know I'm not the only new android fan wondering how to do this once impossible task.
Thanks to all that have helped and spent their time on this, when I'm sure they could have been doing something else.

There's a few guides posted now that explain step by step how to get a root shell. Flashrec will give you the easy way to flash a recovery ROM onto your Hero (this will allow you to upload the custom ROM's that I'm sure people are working and waiting for in all sorts of excitement). The recovery ROM also lets you do a FULL backup/restore of your Hero...settings and all.

Download the app from this post (or the one attached here) to your phone and install with Astro or the like.

Run app, select appropriate version, hit root. Wait ~30 sec, see root confirmation. You are now rooted!!!!
Need a super easy way to get recovery image installed? Download ROM Manager (free) and install the ClockworkMod Recovery. You can now install roms with either ROM manager or thru recovery. You can even flash alternate recovery (RA 1.6.2) from rom manager.
This is stupid easy!!!!
I just did these exact steps about 10 min ago and it worked flawlessly. No messing with RUUs.
Not sure if boot-patched.zip should be flashed afterwards like in the original 2.1 root. Someone else please chime in on this.

question...
I've rooted my Evo , but now tryin to help a buddy root his hero. New to this. I'm curious about some specifics of this. At what point can you nand backup and wipe? As I've noticed most peoples problems rooting come from not wiping data, dalvik cache, and factory reset.
Also, you need to do the 2.1 update before doin this, does it matter? My buddys hero is still on 1.5. Any extra info, specifics, technical info much appreciated.
Thanks in advance. Looks great, and thank you.

Yes you would have to update to 2.1 for this to work, but since your 1.5 why not just root from there?

The app has a 1.5 setting (I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS), but I would recommend doing the 2.1 update first as you will get a newer radio etc....
The point where you do the nandroid backup and wipe is after you install a recovery image. Once you have recovery image installed, you boot into recovery (all stuff you can do from rom manager) and then you do it from there.

Hmmm. Ok. I just started lookin into this for him last night. This appears to be the easiest root method I've ever seen. Is there a root method or exploit for 1.5 that's as easy as this? Hard to imagine so. I've seen a 9 step root from 1.5 so far , but if this works from 2.1, it seems it'd be easier to update to 2.1, then do this.
This provides full root, recovery, and nand unlock, though, huh?
IDK if there's some other method that you know of that's easy, AND reliable, it'd be much appreciated. Don't wanna jack up my buddys phone. I'd never live it down.
Thanks though.
And @ swapped, thanks, I missed your reply before I posted this.
Oh, and is the superuser app included in this ? For my Evo, I had to put a SU zip on SD and flash it. Same for hero?

Seems not to work on HTC Sprint Hero 2.1 with latest .6 update
anyone else confirm?
It worked for me i did it two days ago i had a non rooted cdma hero with the .6 i am running cm6 I didn't need to downgrade at all
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
In case people didn't know the Universal 1-Click root works for the CDMA Hero even if it's running the latest RUU. I managed to root and install a custom recovery and custom overclocked kernel in about 15 minutes after flashing the RUU strictly "over the air" using no terminal commands.
Step 1: Download UniversalAndroot_1.6.1.apk from here
Step 2: Download a filemanager from market. Explorer works fine.
Step 3: Open the filemanager on your phone and navigate to where you downloaded UniversalAndroot_1.6.1.apk
Step 4: Install UniversalAndroot_1.6.1.apk through the filemanager (if you get errors about Unknown sources then go into settings > applications and make sure Unknown sources is checked)
Step 5: Open Universal Androot and click root
This will root your phone and install the latest Superuser.apk
Step 6: Download RomManager from the Market. Allow it su permissions and either install ClockworkMod Recovery or Amon_RA recovery.
Step 7: Download whatever Roms you want and flash away
If this has been discussed somewhere else I'll take it down. Hope this helps people with brand new Hero looking for a quick root with no terminal commands required.
Nice this should be a sticky.
Right on that's awesome! I agree definitely needs too be a sticky
ok how did u confirm it was rooted it said it was rooted but no root apps would work

Hey all,
We've been working pretty hard to bring you unrEVOked 3.2 with out-of-the-box, one-click support for all Android versions on EVO. No system downgrading or /data wiping, one-click root, a full NAND unlock and no PRI downgrade.
Available for Linux, Mac, and Windows:
http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/
Please start by visiting the help page and reading it through:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
1. Windows users MUST install the HBOOT drivers for this to work:
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:windows_hboot_driver_install
2. Windows users need to uninstall HTC Sync or any other program that might talk to the phone over USB (doubletwist, etc). Disabling HTC Sync from the system tray is not enough. They interfere with the root process and will cause problems.
3. When asked for USB connection type, select "Charge Only" and "Remember this".
Special thanks to Sebastian Krahmer for the rageagainstthecage exploit.
oh wow. Good stuff.
That is awesome news. You guys are doing a great job!

This tool works on Windows, Mac and Linux for all released versions of the EVO Android system. When you run it, it permanently unlocks NAND and turns off security, installs clockworkmod (or another recovery of your choice) and installs the su/superuser.apk tools.
It requires no additional ROM downloads, doesn't wipe your data (like the current method that uses unrevoked forever + unrevoked 3.1 to downgrade) and keeps your PRI at 1.40
Bonus: it's one-click.

Typo.. I meant 1.40. Sorry, busy with testing right now and mistyped.
i would've volunteered but i just did the whole downgrading upgrading method two hours ago! frustrating is all i can say but i'm done. now i just have to find a ROM.
I have an incredible myself and can't wait for this method to be official. but i've come across a different project. my buddy saw my customized incredible and wants me to root his EVO. he wants it more for the wifi tethering. but he currently uppdated to 2.2. i know there are several methods to root after the 2.2 update but my question is: how do we remove root just in case he needs to take the phone to sprint for service? thats the only reason thats holding me back from rooting his phone. i want to be able to have everything lined up for him in case a situation comes up and needs to return the phone. if there is a root and unroot process for 2.2 then i wouldn't mind testing. any input is greatly appreciated.

Just completed root/s-off on a white evo 4g with stock 2.2 from the store today. Took five minutes. Thanks for all the hard work!
I'm trying to root today, and didn't know this was available to try... I'm a total noob at this, FYI.
Gonna ask here, seeing as I think it might be the best place... will this allow for the current framerate cap to be removed? That's kind of my entire purpose for looking at rooting my phone, I find everything else is 100% fine for my needs and uses.
I'm always seeing problems that people have after rooting... like losing the WiMax radio, GPS crashing their phone, things missing, this and that not working...
I just don't feel that framerate cap to be THAT big of a deal for me to go and sacrifice two or three things I use regularly over that one slightly minor thing...

The act of rooting doesn't take away those features. It's the ROM that you flash that affects how the phone operates. I do believe there a couple ROMs available, that you can find in the Dev section, that fix the fps. I personally love CM6 with the Snap 7.5 kernel.

Devs, please move this as my question has been answered and i would like it to be easily accessible to other Conquer owners. Thank you.
I take absolutely no credit for this method.
Thanks goes to the creaters of SuperOneClick and to dray_jr bringing this method to my attention.
Here is a quick Guide to Rooting your Samsung Conquer 4G
1. Download Super One Click Root 2.3.1(below)
2. Extract the rar to any location you choice
3. On your phone click Menu, Settings, Application, Development and check USB Debugging.
4. Open SuperOneClick
5. Plug your phone in to the USB
6. Click Root and watch it do its thing
When it is done it should have installed SuperUsers and you should now be rooted.
At this time there is no Roms or Recoverys so the only thing we benifit from is some apps and being able to remove some of the clutter.

Was wondering if I could enlist the help of you fine devs to get this phone rooted. We mainly want root for wifi hotspot so we can cut out internet costs. I know I can just use my hero but would much rather use a phone running 4G.

This would be better suited and answered in the General Forum of XDA. My search of it yields no results in root yet but I'd be patient and someone will eventually. They've already released source code for the phone so it shouldn't be too hard when an experienced dev gets a hold of it.
I don't know of any other Heroc devs getting this phone so that's why I suggest posting this along with the other people hoping to achieve root. This only gets attention of Heroc devs who mostly all moved to the shooter 3vo (me also soon). Plus with ICS development going on most of us have got our plates pretty full. At least i know I do.
Figured I'd post at least something for you since no one else responded.

Figured I'd post at least something for you since no one else responded.

thanks Matt. I assumed all of the above but I figured id still reach outer to all you guys. Been with you guys for almost 2 years now and know yall are damn good at what you do. Didnt know whether or not someone could use source to try and achieve root with me being the tester.
Now get back to bringing me a beautiful ICS rom lol. J/k enjoying it all for now but moving to Evo 3d in January.
Thanks again. Please move or delete this thread.

mainly need root for wifi hotspot. If it works, the stock kernel should suffice correct?
If it does not work, what are the chances of it screwing up the phone?

Here is a quick Guide to Rooting your Samsung Conquer 4G
1. Download Super One Click Root 2.3.1(below)
2. Extract the rar to any location you choice
3. On your phone click Menu, Settings, Application, Development and check USB Debugging.
4. Open SuperOneClick
5. Plug your phone in to the USB
6. Click Root and watch it do its thing
When it is done it should have installed SuperUsers and you should now be rooted.
At this time there is no Roms or Recoverys so the only thing we benifit from this is some Apps

i was able to with no questions at all. i have Titanum Backup Root Fully working.
I also tried installing a custom recovery it gave me 2 options Epic and GalaxyS i9000 i tried both just to try with no luck. i might sit down today and look into getting a recovery and or Rom to work but i am not fimilar with doing this but i am still going to try
Once i start i will be making a thread with updates on how it is going. What i would like to see on this phone is of course a clockwork recovery. But also i want a Rom with Sprint ID removed along with the rest of the bloat ware. other then that the phone it self runs great minus a few bugs here and there with some games not booting up or randomly kicking me to the home screen.
but anyway i hope everyone enjoys the root we have now

I bought a MyTouch on Amazon for 43 dollars.
Can someone provide a simple guide for me so I can update it to the latest CWM? I've never done any mods with an HTC like this and when I did it was the Hero and I hard bricked it. I had a few G1's, too...
Anyway, can someone PM me or reply to this? I need something quick and easy.
Starting from Rooting and finishishing at CM install.
My current device is an LG Phoenix, so... Big Upgrade!

I would start with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801106
It will unlock your bootloader, add CWM, and root your (arriving) phone (in that order). If there are any dead links, I should be able to help out (except for the drivers - you can either try ADBSetup or use Linux to unlock the bootloader).
I would skip Juopunutbear unless you are planning to flash every other week . I did it, it's no big deal, but the best I got out of S-OFF was to change the start-up logo (before the bootanimation).
Hope this gives an idea.

So what if I don't have Admin privileges on a computer? Will Fastboot and ADB still work? I don't know about the drivers...
And I had the original myTouch 3G and I installed the Visionary (the one with the yellow triangle with the lightning bolt hitting a guy) APK file. I was able to flash CWM Recovery after Visionary rooted the device. Is it possible to flash ROMS using CWM instead of unlocking the bootloader?

Probably not. I haven't seen a situation where drivers can install without admin priv.

That would be gaining root through an exploit. If I recall correctly, all of those have been sealed in future OTA's. The only way that makes sense (that is, not trying every rooting package out there) is to unlock the bootloader first. It's really not that bad.

The MT4GS I'm getting is running Gingerbread. If I use GingerBreak APK to root the phone and install CWM, can I still back up the stock OS? And for future reference, how would I keep the baseband once I'm ready to flash ROMs? Like the IMEI and stuff like that?
And the guide that you directed me towards is slightly complicated.
Is there an APK that can turn S-Off? if so, how reliable is it?
And for future reference (I like saying that) the ETA for device delivery is Wednesday on the East Coast of the United States.

Getting out of my comfort zone here, but that should be possible. CWM will be able to back up system and boot, effectively the stock OS.
Haven't heard of people losing their IMEI's with this phone, nor of any backup to protect it, so that should be fine.
When I went through it, I found the guide a bit daunting as well, but you get used to it (alternatively there is below, which I never used).
There is no APK to S-Off (too complicated for a user app, and your phone would be upside down half the time thus making the screen unreadable), but there is this that can speed up the process:

This can root as well. It's no APK, but should get the job done.

*cringes* Windows admin priiivveellleges.....?
And can we just talk about this through PM? the XDA site is destroying my data. The app is better.
s-off has gotten easier. juopunutbear (or however you spell it) is no longer needed. rumrunner s-off is by far easier to use. this is what I used combined with the windroid program to root.
I bought one from a liquidator online. Brand new, out of the box, with the plastic still on the screen and stuff. Unmarked battery, though. Charges a bit too fast. Was labelled as "refurbished" but came in the original manufacturer box with original PC sync cable and chager. I found a way to root the stock ROM without S-OFF, just with CWM. All I had t do was flash a 2.3.6 ZIP that had the SU binary and the .apk file for the Samsung Galaxy Admire. It works on the really stupid Huawei model, too. Which, I installed the Raspberry Pi variation of SliTaz on it, and it works great! But as soon as I came back to my apartment from work I unlocked the bootloader(HTC model), installed CWM, flashed the ZIP fro 1.4 DS, and then did a backup of my old non-functional broken peice of shi...Yeah, and then then flashed the boot image through fastboot, and then restored my backup. My point is, though, my Minecraft PE and my Ravensword 2 installations diappeared after restoring the backup. Any ideas of why this happened?
