Benefits of flashing recommended radio & ril with rom? - HTC Inspire 4G

I have read & read & read & want to know what's the benefit or advantages to flashing a recommended radio for a Rom versus using the stock rooted radio?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

I see you have been asking around about this with no responses, I cant give you the best advice but from my experience i never had any better signal or gps lock on with the recommended radios. some radios will help get better signal and GPS but most of time it's no better then the stock radio.
So the recommended radio isn't necessarily going to be any better.

Well its a personal choice. Like with different roms they recommend certain radios. My advice to you is,try different radios with ril files. But don't flash and say "I see no improvement." Let the radio get settled in and then after 2-3 days, judge for yourself. Keep trying different ones till you find out suitable for you and your area. They affect battery life, data connection, gps, and signal strength for your area. So the only reason they recommend certain radios,is because when tested, they provided the best results. So flash away till your happy

I've noticed in many posts, the recommendation is to "let the radio settle in for a couple days", and i'm presuming that is the best way to test battery results with a specific rom.
But, should a person be able to see immediate results regarding signal strength when flashing different radios? I ask because my home is in a location where signal strength can be spotty, and usually that is may reasoning for trying new radios.

Well I've flashed two radios, stock and the newest ota radio. And I've seem 13hrs + while using a DHD ROM. Because its been 1 week and great results. So imo,yes within that first day u may notice more bars and data speeds increased.

The reason the ROM's recomend a radio is because that is the RIL files loaded in the ROM, if Im not mistaken.. As long as you flash the matching RIL file to the radio you are using all should be good.
I can't really tell any difference in GPS signal or Internet speed with any of the radios.
I can say that I have been using the radio in my sig for 3 weeks now and i do get better phone reception than any other radio.

Well I'm using a way different radio for a DHD ROM and getting 4.15mbps down and 1.45mbps upload.

I'm going to make the attempt of flashing a radio and ril file. Worst case scenario, I don't see an improvement, where do I find the stock radio and ril files to flash back?

Here's the link to the radio. Use the one in the second post.

As for the ril. You can go into rom manager >gtg>ril flasher> select 26.06.06.30 and flash it through recovery.

How Do I Change The Radio FROM My Phone?

The radio I have is super slow and I was wondering how do I change it from my phone not the computer
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
What exactly do you mean by your radio is slow......
Your going to need a computer, so you can check the file before you flash it.
I had this old radio that gave me better service and this one dont. Anyway I can flash it back from my phone?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
You can.
BUT I strongly STRONGLY recommend waiting until your at a computer. You need to check the file before you flash it. You could brick your phone completely, making it totally inoperable if the radio you flash is corrupted.
Realize also that ATT's network seems to be VERY inconsistent lately. Youll most likely see no better performance out of the new radio as its probably all network side. I've tried all the radios, and there all up and down day to day. The last few days though it seems my data speeds have gotta more consistent than they were for the last few weeks
Alright thanks all you guys ill just wait

[Q] GPS only works on MIUI

Ever since I have rooted my Inspire I have tried many different ROMs, and the only one where the GPS locks consistently for.me has been the MIUI rom. Any other ROM either gives me a GPS lock some of the time or not at all.
I have tried many things to get.GPS to work on other ROMs. I've tried GPS status, FasterFix, clearing EFS data, editing the gps.conf file in /system/etc, and even copying the gps.conf file from MIUI to other ROMs, but nothing seems to work.
What is it about MIUI that make the gps work much better in that ROM than other ROMs? I like Sense and I don't really want to use MIUI but I miss my gps.

I should also mention that I live in the southeastern US.

Try installing death's GPS fix. Mount system and data in CWM before installing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11342772&postcount=1
Also, reflashing the radio sometimes helps.
I tried both angeldeath's North America and Southeast gps scripts and all I got was one satellite max in GPS status. I did mount system and data each time I applied the update in CWM.
I am now running Inspired Ace 1.0.1 FWIW.

Did you try reflashing your radio?
What ROMs are you have GPS problems with? You said all but MIUI, but which ones specifically?
I have tried flashing different radios and RILs to see if they work per the Inspire radio thread. I will try reflashing and see if that helps.
I have used CM7.0.1, CM7.0.2, CM 7.1 RC 1, Android Revolution HD 5.1x, Inspired Ace 1.0.1, and Inspired AOSP RC1. Each version of MIUI I have tried works. I have tried 1.7.22 and 1.7.16 (I think that's the version number).

I reflashed the radio and I got 2 satellites after standing outside in the same spot for about a minute.
I should also mention that fast boot is turned off.

Do you have a case on your phone? The GPS antenna is located behind in the vicinity of the camera flash. I've seen reports that some cases interfere with GPS reception. Try taking the case off just to get a lock. Won't hurt.
I don't have a case for my phone. I have seen threads where you take the plastic cover off the back that.surrounds the camera flash, straighten put the springs that.touch the contacts, and reapply the cover. I have not been brave enough to try that. Plus, if gps just works in MIUI bit not any other rom, then that tells me that it is a software issue.

Cool. Yeah I've see that hardware fix too. Luckily my GPS is functioning, particularly with AngelDeath. Weird problem only works on one ROM. Well good luck. I hate it when GPS isn't working properly.

GPS has worked on all of them...I currently have 4 Sense based 4 ROMS on my phone now that are in my sig. I have only rolled Sense based ROMs. Every one of them have essentially worked good, and they work better with AngelDeath. My worst experience was stock back a few months ago, but just this morning I flashed a rooted/leaked AT&T GB RUU with the bloat stripped, and GPS works acceptable/good on it without AngelDeath.
Which ROM did you just install? I am downloading the one that Gene Poole posted this morning to give it a whirl. Hopefully I will have better luck with that one.

I saw GenePoole's. That's cool he put one out.
It looks like GenePoole's ROM does much better with GPS than with others I have tried. I can get 5-6 satellites with it, which is not optimal, but better than nothing. I will try AngelDeath's scripts if I am not satisfied with the accuracy. Which script did you use; the North America script or the region specific one?

I am currently using LC1. Seems to improve my wifi reception quite a bit. But cdma and 3g signal still sucks. So just a quick poll for everyone. Which radio to use on ICS, and dl links if you have them. Thanks!!!

Really which is best is very subjective. I have personally never seen a difference with any of them. Theoretically though, the latest one should be the best one. Here is the link to the thread in the development section.

Thanks for the reply. I have seen that thread and tried all except the KD8, I didn't notice a difference with any but LC1. My signal seemed the same but my speed tests were faster at home with the airave. Which I know runs the same 3g speed constantly. . . According to my other phones. The point of the post really was to see if anyone knew of a better radio. In their opinion besides the ones on that list. But I will update after I try the KD8.

No noticeable difference between the two.

Wifi speeds are not necessarily dependent on the used baseband firmware. Wifi speeds are influenced in fact much more by the used drivers (corresponding shared objects with "so" extension and library files) and its bugs. These drivers are located on the system partition. Official binary blobs containing wifi drivers can be downloaded. The official ROM uses binary blobs (proprietary SW) for wifi operation. Though some custom ROMs may contain open source drivers.

There aren't different radios than those. If you see a different radio not in that list, you should probably not flash it if they're claiming it's for our phone. Obviously a new radio could come out again and there could technically be some radio that never went official but if those make it into the public, the thread would likely be updated and have them.

[Q] 4G LTE issues with CleanRom 5.0

Hi all,
i have some questions about CleanRom 5.0 however i don't have the authority to post in it's forum, so i'm hoping someone can help me out here.
overall the rom is incredible, my only issue is the speed of my 4g lte network. it is much slower than what i am used to.
using speed test i consistently get about 12mbps down and 8mbps up, however if i go back to my stock nandroid backup so my phone is like it was before i went to cleanrom i used to consistently get about 23mbps down and 16mbps up. is this normal for cleanrom and if not is there a way to fix it because now the speed is about half of what it used to be.
i should probably also mention that i flashed the new radio and rpm that scrosler provided links to in the second post of the cleanrom forum
I've seen it stated many times that roms won't affect connection. Likely it is the new radio you flashed. You can always try flashing the old radio and rpm. Someone with s little more experience may have more insight.

Gotta agree with this. Roms do not change/impact your signal.
OP, flash another set of modem/rpm or even return to what you used before. Personally, my data speeds were below what I'm used to when using the latest modem/rom. My experience is nothing more than anecdotal and a single trial. I switched back to a prior modem/rpm combo and have enjoyed my normal speeds/LTE access.

@SlimSnoopOS
Thank you both very much for the responses. I will try flashing the old modem and rpm to see if that solves the issue.

Question about Radios

I'm on the turge stock 4.2.2 room with the new firmware. While I don't have data drops my signal doesn't seem to be as strong. In settings in my house it's -97 dBm. Is it possible to change back to the existing AT&T radio on this Rom without any data drops?
Did you flash twice so your radio would update as well when you flashed the 2.15 firmware? Can you post your baseband version here?
Sent from my Evita
This is the info. From everything I can tell it updated correctly.
Sent from my HTC One XL using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah that's the updated radio. You can try flashing the older radio to see if it helps with your signal strength.
Sent from my Evita
You can try a different radio. A small number of folks have had weak reception with the newer radio, and report better reception with an older radio.
But you might start getting the signal drop issue, as I believe its related to the power save function on Sense 5 ROMs not being compatible with the older radios.
If you aren't actually experiencing any reception issues (no dropped calls or breakup during calls, good download speeds on the network), and only observing the measured signal strength, I'd lean toward saying to leave the radio alone. Might cause an actual problem versus the present "perceived" problem.
Where would I find the older radio and would i flash it like the firmware? I feel like my download speeds aren't as good and I'm willing to give it a try.

Have you actually measured the speeds using Speedtest, and at different times of the day (networks tend to be more congested at certain times)? You can just be having a placebo effect.
