I really had problem with the battery life on the Nexus S.
30% Talk, 20% Facebook, 20% Webbrowsing, 20% chatting and 10% Standby mode. Never use 3G as my country not really available yet (Y_Y) and little of Wifi. I can hardly had my Nexus S with me more than 9hr. I'm on the CM7. Thank you for all the advise.
SO which rom give the best battery life result on the Nexus S?
it can be any number of things that affect battery life.
we all have different ideas of what light, heavy and moderate usage is.
if you are in an area with spotty cell coverage that will greatly impact your batt life.
if you just got your NS give yourself time to break in the batt. When i first got mine the day they got released i wasnt happy with batt life but a week later it was amazing.
ROMs will do little to nothing to give you better battery life. but from experience CM always edged out on top.
cm7 has pretty good battery life. You might want to try a custom kernel if you haven't already. I recommend netarchy's. Otherwise you could flash modaco rom which I've personally found to have slightly better battery life. 9 hours with your kind of use is actually not bad at all. Other things you could do is recondition your battery to maximize it. Or dim your screen brightness because you seem to be on the screen a lot. Screen filter app works great for this.

speaking of screen brightness, having your phone set to auto brightness uses more batter than just manually changing the brightness for any given situation
im still on stock and i try the nightlies here and there i get a day and a half on both builds. you must have lot syching in the background or ur apps are running in the background.
Thank you all for advise. I'll try to remove those programs that seem to run in background.
Loving my G2X, batt life isnt as good as my N1. I did let it drain completley till phone shut off on its own , then factory reset the phone and let it charged completley. That helped out alot but still batt life aint N1'ish. Could it be because of dual core or and will gingerbread update help out batt life. (This is my 1st post)
cant expect the battery life to be identical to another phone. battery life may or may not get battery in future updates.
So far so good with my battery. definitely better battery life than my Nexus 1.
YAY! Another battery life thread!!! I've been missing them.
It's a great phone.. I hope you enjoy it.
I didn't factory reset, but I rooted, backed it up (key step!) , then got rid of a lot of the bloatware. Namely car home that always had a service and a lot of other unused default apps. Today my battery has been a champ. Normal use, occasional browsing, and 30 minutes of Listen predownloaded podcast on the way to work. I'm at 79% now after 5 hours off charge.
I did battery calibration too, but not sure ill see its affect until after I do a full discharge cycle.
If you're interested, just search g2x root then g2x bloatware.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
You dont need to discharge your battery if you use the battery calibration app or delete battery stats in clockworkrecovery. Draining the battery unnecessarily like that is bad for the battery. That's why the two options I just named were made.
I'm having the strangest problem with my HTC Evo...
I used to get over 22hrs of moderate use (rooted) and ever since flashing any ROM running Sense 3.0 my battery life is affected to the point I'm lucky to get 6 hours of use. It discharges 15% within the first 10 minutes after unplugging the charger and continues to discharge at an increased rate throughout the day.
I unrooted the phone and took it to Sprint to "test" and after 3 hours they gave me back the same exact phone claiming they had "updated" it and everything, including the battery, had tested perfectly fine.
I feel like they are giving me the run around because obviously something is wrong here.
Any ideas as to what is going on here?
Rooting doesn't improve battery life, never did. Think of rooting as gaining admin privileges to a Windows PC, for example.
I think you have a background process running that is taking up a lot of battery, check the Battery Use page or reboot the phone.
I know, but it shouldn't diminish it either. It does gives you a chance to see a potential increase by undervolting, underclocking, ect.
Anways, no background apps running. All display scaled down, GPS off, ect, ect.
I have no clue as to why this sudden decrease in life. And Sprint says the battery is testing "excellent" as is the phone. Obviously something is not right here. Feels like they are being lazy and trying to avoid giving me a replacement.
Evo is known for bad battery usage. Best thing for you to do is get a backup battery.
Lol. I know that too, I'm not new to the Evo. I work with phones, Evo included, on a daily basis at my place of employment.
I'm saying this same battery used to last over 22 hours with moderate use when the phone was rooted and underclocked. Now the phone drains the battery amost instantly.
I refuse to purchase an additional battery to combat a problem Sprint should be fixing. I paid over $500 for this phone and haven't even had it a whole year yet. Something else is going on here...
Sounds like a rom issue, not a hardware one. Those sense 3.0 features and eye candy come at a cost.
Yeah. Sense 3.0 is a battery hog. Try cm7 or something AOSP
ADR6300
yeah, one turne off and reboot, Battery Life TERRIBLE too, i'm lost 10% when reboot

It's ture !
Have you tried an app that shows you battery usage over your running apps? May tell you which programs are stealing all the juice
!. Rooting does not have anything to do with battery life...well..not directly..it depends on your kernels, apps, phone settings, etc.
2. I agree, Sense 3.0 seems to drain your battery a bit more than previous Senses... well...you know what they say, beauty has its price..about the AOSPs, they have better battery live but they are not so pretty as the Senses...again...beauty has its price
If it helps the 'Live wallpapers' are known to eat battery, but what it could be is Wifi, if you leave it switched on all the time it may be connecting to open wifi networks without you realising and eating the battery.
Interestingly though, a whole day of use, some wifi a bit of camera and some calls on a wildfire with wifi on, didn't seem to drop the battery much and this is with a rooted phone.
you can try green power
Even though it may sound lame to some of you, the app Juice Defender has actually helped extending the life on battery quite nicely for me...
Another possible route might be to try different Radio/RIL combinations, some can also extend your battery life.
Not to forget, as someone posted previously things like live wallpapers or background process. Task Killers have been known to cause battery drain for instance.
Good luck in your quest for battery life!
Hans
if you go to battery use in settings, youd probably find out whats causing your battery drain
You there! Android hacker! Stop screwing around with your battery stats!
OK, if you're not part of the small subset of rooted users who likes to mess around with things they shouldn't, you can probably skip the rest of this story and read something more interesting below. But if you have fiddled with battery stats on your phone, or used any of the rooted "battery calibration" apps in the Android Market, which do the same thing, it's time to stop. Google engineer Diane Hackborn has taken to Google+ to dispel the myth that wiping battery stats can improve your battery life, or the efficiency with which your phone charges.
This file [batterystats.bin] is used to maintain, across reboots, low-level data about the kinds of operations the device and your apps are doing between battery changes. That is, it is solely used to compute the blame for battery usage shown in the "Battery Use" UI in settings. That is, it has deeply significant things like "app X held a wake lock for 2 minutes" and "the screen was on at 60% brightness for 10 minutes."
It has no impact on the current battery level shown to you. It has no impact on your battery life.
So there you have it. If you want better battery life, you're better off trying more basic techniques like keeping tabs on screen brightness or anything that might be running in the background. Or, y'know, buy a bigger battery...

Um.... what?
No one has ever (or ever should) claimed that resetting battery stats actually improves battery life. It only improves the accuracy of the battery readings.

That whole post is a quote from the article not me
Entropy has had some really good posts on this
There are a few HTC phones that have some specific battery guage software/hardware that it is beneficial to...other than that the claim is that it does absolutely nothing
I don't have the tech skills to prove/disprove any of it haha
After alot of way to clear battery stats with nothing good now i have best way to clear it and i do it everytime i flash new rom:
you turn off your phone and charge it to 100%. After that you take the battery out and wait 5minute and put it back. Don't turn on your phone, keep it off and charge, you will see that the phone now not 100%. Wait to it charge to 100% and now your batter good to go!

I use Battery Calibrator from the App Market... What I do is I let completely the battery die and then full charge, then I use battery calibrator to calibrate and reboot and done!

The OP is correct.
Wiping battery stats has got NOTHING to do with battery life, battery charging or anything of that kind.
Here is another good explanation. Wiping battery stats is a total MYTH !!!

Do you realise what a shock this is to me? And other folk who have happily been dreaming of great battery effects with battery stats?
EVEN IN THIS POST HERE, there is no critcal discussion, no devs have chimed in and this myth has remained for all to belieive. There is almost NOTHING a hacked ROM can do to improve battery life BY ACTUALLY AFFECTING HOW THE BATTERY CHARGES. This is a big statement. It is really a kernel thing, and all the claims that this or that ROM has great battery life is just a fluke.
I mean, if your battery is acting flaky, then there is a deep kernel issue, or even a hard battery problem?
I mean c'mon, how come this is not common knowledge? Or am I the only gut in the dark.....
Hey, If I had not found this post, I was going to start my own post, and SHOVE this down people's throats !!!!!!
Just because i feel like a fool !!!!!!
EDIT: OKay, so then, keeping a stock kernel in the ROM will makes MORE sense ASSUMING it has the best optimization of the wakelocks. So a custom kernel is only good for battery life if the dev has dajusted the wakelocks properly.....now I see the light !!
Well, since it was I who helped you see the light, I'll explain my friend.
Different roms MAY have different battery life depending on build.prop tweaks (control CPU scaling and power bias) as well as framework changes that may or may not cause wake locks.
Wake locks can also be present in a rom but never manifest themselves for cetain users, because of the apps they install. Often times they are extremely config specific.
Custom kernels on the other hand can help battery life significantly. They may eliminate certain wake locks, add different cpu governors that have better scaling, and of course the ability to under volt.
Battery status - it is only "battery status" in status bar. You need clear it if you changed battery on new or bigger. This is need for correct % information in status bar. That all.
I'm using the Virtuous Inquisition 4.0.2 ROM and my battery life, while better than what it was pre rooting, is still not that great. When I'm outside my house and using 3G, my battery drops by about 8-10% per hour. This is quite poor compared to some of the battery usage I see on this forum with various people posting their screenshots. What exactly can I do to improve battery life?
They're are many little tricks you can do to preserve battery but one thing that actually helped me the most was switching out my stock battery for a long lasting battery. Most of us have done this this is why your seeing the different results. I personally use Anker battery. It's given me a lot more battery time than stock ever had! This is really the best way to go.As for the tricks you can check your settings and turn down or off some of the things that are draining battery like led, turn down back light , keyboard feed back, check your sync and only sync what's necessary, make sure no logging is taking place , ect. Just look for what you might think is draining battery and adjust the settings accordingly. I hope this helps you out. It had helped me. Best wishes.

Well I am using the Anker battery for a pretty long time now and I still don't anywhere close to the battery performance that most others here seem to get. What 3.32 based kernel would you suggest which would best help save battery?
I like bricked ,but try a few out and see what you think. Bricked has proven to give me the best battery life personally. Best wishes.

What battery u using
Kernels doesn't seem to help if i put brightness to 50% on virtuous rom i can get up to 4 hour screen on time whit anker battery ..

you can try using juice defender, changing cell type to 2G or GSM (PRL) in 4636 menu, switch off synchro, set conservative governor or make own cpu seting (disable second core for ex.) Hypernonsense is good batterry saving aosp rom. im using it with stock kernel
