Battery life and virus symptoms - T-Mobile LG G2x

So I did a search on cell phone virus, and one of the symptoms was fast battery drain. Could it be with all this big brother survelliance that t mobile, google etc are putting "legitimate" spy ware on the new generation of cell phones such as the g2x?

the only "spy ware" that there would be is the anonymous data collecting that you can opt out of at the log in screen of your phone... so no they would not, can you imagine the law suit they would have on their hands if someone found out? remember android is open source, someone would find out unlike iOS...
if it is battery drain problems you are having it is most likely an app you downloaded, or in this case your mystery virus, that is spiking activity on your phone and pinging the network... or you may just be in a ****ty network location like me and GPRS is just raping the **** out of your battery if you are not on wifi

Well, it's kinda suspicious that there's an article posted recently about wifi security issues, and then t mobile goes and gives free wifi calling. Coincidence? Also how safe is it to install a 3rd party ROM such as one from XDA? Can't these ROM's be malicious? Besides, the battery shouldn't be draining at 5 to 20% an hour while it's just in my pocket.

With so many people reporting amazingly improved battery life with the current "fixes" out there, why would you still suspect a virus or some sort of Big Brother in your phone?
Btw, I have a bridge you might be interested in buying. PM me.

what sort of wifi security issues?
could the roms be malicious? yes... are they? no... why would they be? everything that gets posted here must have public source code so if you are skeptical then go look for yourself (if you can read code)... if you are skeptical then run a stock only rom and live life in a closet... battery draining 5% an hour is not the end of the world, personally mine drains about 1-2% every hour of pure standby, i have gotten 30 hours of light-moderate use on a consistent basis...
if you are having issues then do a factory reset and solve the problem yourself rather than point fingers at third parties...

Yes, it's a coincidence. No, the ROM's on XDA aren't malicious. Let me clue you in to something. "Big Brother" has more important people to stalk than us, and if you're a spy or a terrorist the NSA doesn't need for you to use wifi calling so they can listen in. You probably ended up with a ****ty battery. Go exchange it.

People and their google diagnosing of their issues with little knowledge if what is happening. If I researched every little health symptom I noticed I could convince myself I needed immediate hospitalization.

It's more like big bro already has our location at all times and all of our info so why would they need to do anything more?
If you're that worried about it, owning a cell phone is probably not the best idea.

[Q] ICS OTA official - battery life opinions

Looks like there isn't a thread on this yet, and now that I, and many others, have the OTA up and running, I thought it would be good to compare notes.
I don't have anything meaningful to say right now as I've been too busy playing with the new rom to note when I installed, what percentage the battery was at when I did so, and so on.
However, I've had a nexus s for a long time and I am a serial rom flasher, and you get an impression pretty quick of how quick the battery is going down - I'm sure you all know what I am saying.
Seems to me that my battery is going down quick. I won't know for sure until I actually go to work on Monday. Then I will wake up in the morning with 100% charge and all will become clear as the day goes on.
But the rest of you must be getting some impression of battery life by now - so what do you think??
ps - Liking this rom. All desire to buy a galaxy nexus has evaporated for the moment, which is really good as that is one expensive phone
It's not great. Seems like Mediaserver is the biggest culprit for my drain. Even though I dont listen to music for long periods of time. Seems like maybe it's got a runaway process or something.
It's hard to say at this point, though.
I reckon my battery is going down really fast. was going to vote - but just discovered you can't vote on your own poll. What a pisser
<<edit>> you can vote on your own poll. i wasn't logged in..................
It's really hard to judge this early since the update just came yesterday. Also some may think their battery life is poor but maybe since the update we've all been playing with our phones more?

No, it's been confirmed on other phones too. Even Galaxy Nexus users are experiencing it. The problem seems to lie in something that's not letting the phone sleep. If you break down the usage of Android OS, "Keep Awake" runs for WAY too long, which keeps the phone constantly awake and draining battery.

Yeah, I just noticed something, that might be relevant. Went into wi-fi settings. Options have changed a bit and so has default setting.
New options are like this................
Question asked is, "Keep wi-fi on during sleep".
On GB the default answer would have been no - only have wi-fi on when screen is on.
The other options are to have wi-fi on, "only when plugged in", or "never".
Mine was set to "always". First time I had been into this menu so looks like that is default, and that has got to burn the battery up. I've now set it to, "only when plugged in".
So, will see what difference it makes, and post back.
To Be Honest I'm Getting Better Battery Life Than When I Was On The Latest Kang.

I thought this thread what asking the battery life from GB to ICS.
How can Galaxy Nexus users judge if their battery life is worse? Worse compared to what? They only had ICS to begin with.
Frankly, I've been using the ICS Alpha's for about two weeks and now been using the official OTA ROM for a few hours and it has been the same battery drain.
I have no opinion on ICS vs GB battery drain if that what this thread is asking.

Actually, I've read that WiFi uses much less power than a cellular network - because of the shorter range. So if you're constantly using background data, having WiFi enabled can actually make the battery last longer.
So far, 'Android OS' is winning handily at destroying my battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20410020&postcount=129
I'll keep an eye on it and see if it continues.
Confirmed. This is a real battery killer it seems. My battery has been massacred!

i think what you guys are seeing is just the good old "new device effect" all over again
if you haven't notice everyone with a new phone always complain about battery problem
that's because it's so sweet you can't put it down, and you are constantly using it
since the screen eats up the more juice, you can hardly refill it fast enough
it just the only difference in this case we don't have a new hardware but we do have a new OS, which makes it all sweet brand new renewed all over again

I would be very interested to see if google roll out a future update to maybe throttle back android os's use of battery because it is either a bug in ICS or else they have just lumped more processes under the android os title in the battery menu and that's why it is so high.
I can confirm 'Android OS' has mostly more battery usage than sleep mode isnce ICS (ported versions or that one day OTA). Anyway i didn't use my phone today cuz i have left it home. But what can you say after one day.

What is the best "Deep Sleep" you've gotten?

I'm posting this in general because although it's a question, it is not posed as a "help needed" question. But more of a survey. I'm not seeking advice or assistance.
When I was running my Galaxy S3 on AOSP ROM's, I was able to get up to 95% deep sleep overnight.
My new S4 with stock TouchWiz was doing pretty awful.
I installed Greenify and sleeped a large amount of apps. And I also uninstalled about 130 bloatware apps that Samsung & AT&T nicely placed on my phone for me.
Just noticed I hit 91.5% deep sleep. It's the best I've gotten so far on this TW ROM.
I use CPU Spy to check my deep sleep.
I'm linking the "free" version, but I always pay for my apps.
Suggest you do the same if you find the app useful.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS5idmFsb3Nlay5jcHVzcHkucmVhbGdwcCJd
And here is a screenshot of my last (and best ever) deep sleep on a deodex TouchWiz AT&T debloated ROM running Greenify.

Doesn't this depend on (at least in part) to how much you actually use your phone during a charge cycle? So if you use it less, you should achieve better deep sleep %, correct?
OP meant deep sleep overnight when you're not using the phone at all.

Yep! :good:
Or at least a period of more than an hour+, where you're not using the phone.
Though overnight is a MUCH better indicator of how well your phone sleeps.
I should mention that I leave WiFi and GPS and Bluetooth on at all times. These are also good bits of info to know when studying deep sleep.
well without custom roms on the s4, I haven't really gotten into that whole scene yet.. but I can tell you my s3 got over 30 days standby, when I got my s4 and let it sit in my room untouched.
normal use however is 2% drop over an 8 hour sleep. that's with normal settings, wifi/gps/internet/etc all on (my day to day settings), no under clocking or any silly battery apps. just good old fashioned wakelock corrections.
simply between BetterBatteryStats and AutoStarter, tracking down poorly behaving wakelocks, and asking them to simply not start up on their own.

any ideas as to what is going on with my battery

I was running venom xl and I'm now running clean rom and I'm experiencing the same behavior in both roms. I wonder if it's a hardware issue or if anyone else was having the same problem. I leave the phone on it's charger during the day while I'm at work. idle drain seems to be fine for most of the time but sometimes when I reset the phone, whats in the photo is what happens.
any ideas? additional clarification needed? I don't think I use the phone much. I might spend 30 minutes on YouTube watching videos during lunch on my lte connection (which on average takes about 15 to 20% battery) but I don't use the phone except for lightly for emails and occasionally social networks.

No wakelocks as far as i can tell.
I'm more concerned about the loss of battery suddenly after restarting the phone, which is why I posted the photo. As you can see, after restarting (the valley in the graph), I "lost" 8% of my charge.
Another weird occurence happened the other day. I had about 20% or so, I was listening to music, and the phone decided to just go from 20 to 10 to off in the span of about 45 seconds. I saw as the battery nose dived and killed itself.
I'm beginning to wonder if my battery cells are dying or are incorrectly reporting a charge to the point where the phone dies while thinking it has more charge than it actually does. Thats why I'm looking for people who may have had the same thing happen to them.
It's not uncommon for the battery meter to lose up to 10% during some reboots. It's also not uncommon for the battery to die more rapidly when it is close to losing charge. It's important to remember that even when we have battery increments of 1% it's not exact, it's only an estimation of the level of your battery. Your battery may not be in very good health, it all depends on what kind of usage it has endured during its lifespan. The more times you discharge this kind of battery fully or close to zero, the faster it is going to degrade. It's more healthy for the battery to receive top-up charges from about ~40% or so.
Sent from my Evita
A "jump" down after a reboot may just be a metering error that is fixing itself. I would think a steady (but faster than normal) decline in battery level to possibly indicate a failing battery. But a vertical (or nearly so) is probably just a metering error. I've seen this happen once or twice on my phone, and everything seems fine with the battery. It just seems like a fluke.
As mentioned, battery metering is far from accurate. It shouldn't be taken for granted that 1% increments, or even close to that are accurate.
Battery life (and whether yours is failing or not) is a very difficult thing to compare, as it depends greatly on how you use your phone, and reception in your area. But the drainage you described, for watching YouTube on LTE (pretty power intensive activity) seems pretty normal to me.

Here's the deal with Z5's low battery life issues (solved, for me at least)

I've been struggling to keep my Z5 off the charger for at least a day ever since I got it (3 weeks), and although I loved everything about the phone compared to the Z3, the battery life was a huge let down. Even after flashing the whole OS I got no change.
My Z5 came with the quick charge charger (check yours, it's model nb is UCH20). After using it for a few days, doing partial and complete battery drain cicles with NO improvement on the crappy battery life I was experiencing, I came accorss an older normal, non fast charging charger (the one that came with the z1,2,3). So just for fun, i decided to use that one.
The results were surprisingly more than positive. After a complete drain, and a complete charge witht the older charger (which might have come with some "less fortunate" Z5 variants) the battery lasted almost twice as much. I ended up with 30% at 12 o'clock at night after heavy use (8 hours of bt listening till my sbh80 headset died) plus a decent ammount of browsing and some gaimg, which considering it was at 100% at 8 am when i pulled it out, was better than my old Z3.
So there you go. I saw on forums that some people are having problems with a ****ty battery life, otheres don't. From my experience, and the black and white difference i got in battery life from those 2 chargers, I definitely suspect it's the quick charger's fault.
So now, whoever has problems with their battery life, just get an older standard sony charger. Kinda sucks, i know, but apparently sony's quick charger is ****). But at least you'll get awesome battery life (hopefully).
So Sony Mobile, what's up with the ****ty quick charger? Why am I getting horrible battery life when using it?
FYI: The UCH20 is not a Quick Charge 2.0 device - it's just a regular 1.5A charger. The UCH10 is the QC one.
I'm taking your "battery lasted almost twice as much" statement with a pinch of salt...
So you're basically calling me a liar without trying it? What a constructive comment and, not to mention, member of XDA developers. As for the UCH20, I assumed it's quick charge because it seems to make a full charge on my Z5 in 2 hours as opposed to 2:40h with the older charger.
Calm yourself down, fella! I'm suggesting that as your post contains a known error (UCH20 is not QC) that perhaps that lack of attention to detail casts doubt on the accuracy of your battery life claim.
No one's calling you a liar. I just find it hard to believe that a different charger has such an impact on how long the Z5 lasts on it once it's charged...
FYI: Your older charger is probably a 1.0A one or similar if it takes 2:40 to charge fully. The UCH20 is 1.5A and QC chargers go up to 2A.
I think it may be more likely that you've had some random wakelock and just haven't had it triggered after charging with this other charger. I've noticed a random wakelock and so far have no clue what it is.

This seems right to me. I'm not sure if it's all Android devices, but I've noticed that this phone stays awake all the time.
I don't have Facebook, Facebook messenger, Instagram, or Whatsapp installed (known bad apps), but often I still have massive wakelocks.
I have found a temporary workaround:
1) Clear cache on Android Wear
2) Force stop Google Play Store; clear cache
3) Clear cache on Google Play Services
4) Reboot
Really not happy with this. I'm guessing it's Google's fault. Someone really needs to take care of this bug.

Are you sure? I'm not even on Facebook and I've never installed the app but it was already on the phone out of the box. And the phone was bought carrier free so Facebook must be paying Sony to put it on the ROM (Customised DE). So I uninstalled the Facebook app the second I spotted it - never even ran it. Then I spot these two com.facebook.blah apps I had to disable but there's no corresponding app left to uninstall:

Phone getting warm in pocket

Hi all,
My s8 plus is getting warm when it is in my pocket but when i keep it outside , it stays very cool. Also while sleeping as well if i keep my phone under the pillow it is warm when i pick it up in the morning, i am not sure why this is happening
I have even switched on block accidental touches option, its still the same
What could be the issue, my idle battery drain is very bad as well , i am thinking its linked to this issue.
My guess is that the screen is on or coming on.
If it's not the screen IDK.
Thanks for the reply.. if the screen was turning on, it should be visible in the battery usage right, but its not , yesterday night I kept my phone under my pillow and my battery drained almost 25% .. attaching screens ..

Any software that's using Wi-Fi causes this. It was caused by Alcatel link app for me. I forced closed it and it was fine.
I don't have any wifi related app installed, and I am confused why it happens only when it is pocket or under pillow , I think something to do with the proximity sensor but I am not able to nail down the issue. And the battery usage is completely bonkers , it cant even show what drained the battery and what was happening that time.

Have you run a comparison, from full charge, between outside pocket, off vs inside time re: drain?
Check the apps usage list or install s.t. like Greenify or the like as a secondary check.
Install a data monitoring app and see if what processes work in the background.
I have the same problem. But then I realized that the pillow and the pocket are warm because of your body's temperature. As long as there aren't any battery drain issues, it is nothing to worry about.

I have this note 4 which does not get warm when it is in my pocket or under the pillow, so its definitely not the temperature

If anyone is interested .. this is the battery drain if I keep my phone out .. fair drain around 5 to 6 %
I think it's AOL.
After a full reset and no apps installed , no more heating in pocket or under pillow, so it was definitely one of the apps , Android battery usage is useless i guess, it cant even track what is draining the battery.
what other battery apps track the usage of apps correctly?
