Just play with an iPhone4 with my Infuse next to it - Samsung Infuse 4G

And the text clarity was really not that big of a difference.
Yes it is sharper in the iphone, but i would not call it a big difference.

3.5 inches! haha
i will never buy or use any phones with screen less than 4.3 inches!

I own iPhone 4 and Infuse. After two days of playing with the infuse, it annoyed me to go back and navigate the iphone. I dont think Ill ever buy a screen that small again.

I was same way with my iPhone never again going back down. I've had the infuse for 3 days now and I can honestly say I love this phone. Screen is the amazing.

When I had the Atrix and Inspire I kept kind of wishing I had kept my iPhone 4, the Infuse has COMPLETELY Changed that for me. The Infuse is fantastic.

so im taking it that the Infuse is nothing like the galaxy s series (fascinate, captivate) etc...? I hated my fascinate on verizon and would never go back to a galaxy s but i hear good things about the infuse.

Galaxy S 1.5 if you will. Screen, camera, GPS and data speeds are Galaxy S II level, but software and the rest of the hardware is from the original Galaxy S. TouchWiz 3 and Froyo are the biggest downsides. If this had TouchWiz 4 and Gingerbread I would be all over it.

To be honest, my opinion about the screen is different. To me, It's NOT as clear as the Iphone's retina. Because of the larger screen and the low resolution, my font is somewhat pixelated compared to my iphone 4. I do admit that the colors are more vibrant than the iphone 4. I'm not dissing the phone by any means because I love this phone. I just wish that the font and icons weren't as pixelated. Not a deal breaker to me but I just thought I'd throw my opinion out there.

Build.prop edit change density to 200.... see if you can tell the difference...
But also look at the size of the screen... you have almost 30% more screen that plays a difference in the resolution as well.

I don't think it has anything to do with the resolution and screen size, but rather a sharpening filter Samsung added. To quote myself,
drleospaceman said:
Not really a bug per say, but Samsung added some sort of light artificial sharpening filter to the display driver in touchwiz. If you restore the phone, there is a console with very small green text which does not have the sharpening, and it looks amazing.
This is how text looks in many parts of touchwiz (icons are affected too, e.g. it's noticeable in the taskbar icons):

Worth saying root needed.

Dude. This is a true statment! Haha. I felt the say way last night using my iPhone 4. It was small and annoying. I bought a noosy sim cutter off amazon for 5 bucks and used that last night to test how it work. It was worth the buy now I can swap from my infuse to iphone 4 no problems. But The iphone apps are better polished and I miss that. I wish android had the picture and video apps like the iPhone does. But this is my second android phone I have ever owned and I love this phone! I had a dell streak and it sucked. I think they made it to bulky and it didnt help it was on 1.6 for the longest time. So I traded my Streak for a iPhone 4 and was happy with that then I got this phone and dont want to use my iPhone as much. Samsung nailed it with the screen size and thiness I think. Thats a part of what makes this phone great. The screen looks amazing too. I am having a hard time comparing the screen to the iphone 4 screen. the only thing i see a difference is the text quality is a slight off from the iphone 4. but that does not matter.

Iphone convert
This seems like an appropriate place to ask as I made the switch from an iphone and think I'm getting over the customization hump. Did anyone use tlert and intelliscreen? I've been trying apps to try and recreate the experience but haven't found anything great yet. Right now I'm using handcent and executive assistant. The sms popups are way too big, I liked them small and unobtrusive.

Smartphone Design

I know that most people that get smartphones don't usually put design at the top of their list, but... Why are smartphones beginning to look alike? I know that I am probably not the only one that notices this, but shouldn't companies do something innovative with the design of smartphones? For the most part, nearly every smartphone looks like a rectangle with curved edges.
lol and what you had in mind man? Thats like reinventing the wheel, but hey they can improve the design but I am sure it will remain similar as alot of research went in to it. Far as the curved edge goes specially in NS its to much I want my device flat lol in this case I hate to say as iPhone is best example.
iPhone 4 shell and LG Optimus 2X hardware with 4.5" display would be my dream device ill never upgrade it. Dell Steak well thats another matter but hey never watched StarTrek? ever saw those assignment pads looks like small tablets? lol
A few things are being done to change phone design a bit, but right now I think most are either very niche because of bad insides to match, or just a design/prototype for now. Most still use the same rectangle I think, but change a lot in the basic design

Maybe some small changes, not major, but distinctive enough to make them not boring. The myTouch 4g and the Sony Xperia Arc are distinctive enough in my opinion. Even the Incredible does something different with it's rather odd battery door (I still don't get what HTC was thinking).
From a distance, you can't really tell the difference between the HTC EVO, HTC Desire HD, and HTC Thunderbolt. Same goes with the Samsung Focus, Nexus S, Vibrant, Fasinate, Epic (without revealing keyboard obviously) along with some of their newer phones. Most of the dual core phones look the same as well.
Oh and a white phone would be nice even though I prefer black.
For tablets, there is not much to be done. Unless of course, the Microsoft Courier comes to life.

I like the idea of a three screen smartphone, oh and changing the led color reminds me of Alienware.
They also have the Backflip, the Charm and the Droid Pro. Yet, some of the Motorola phones aren't as creative in terms of design.
Do any of you remember seeing the Nokia N90 for the first time? Lots of companies want to innovate, but probably worry about loss of profits it the design is bad.
If you want to see "innovation," you can check out shanzai.com and check out their selection of phones. It is basically a website that shows fake/copied versions of current phones avaliable in the world (usually from China). The "innovation" part being some of the designs may make you think WTF.

I've thought that myself before, but it wouldn't work too well around the front because the black works as a great contrast to make the screen look better. I think that's why iPhone has white only on the back

A white BlackBerry Bold does look a little weird. Although, the European Hero/HTC Legend does look nice. Maybe if buttonless phones are invented, we might see more white phones.
I would love to have more for options; unless im missing something, it is just s different color platic right? I can understand that it would complicate production of the phone and all, but I would love some color variants.
Hell, they could even sell one phone as is and charge to have the plates swapped out at official carrier stores; sort of like getting parts of an iphone fixed at an apple store.

Like you I would like to be able to choose between different colors but it's certainly more expensive to produce different colors than only one as you have to launch different batch campaigns while you launch only one if you stick to one color.
But I'm not sure this is the only reason manufacturers stick to classical colors (black or grey). I think that most people prefer a classical color and green, red, pink colors would sell not as good as black.
Another design: have you seen the HTC Tube concept? It's really gorgeous.
Well, like you said, they can only do so much you know? But you also have to remember that theyre trying to sell a phone, and that means speaking to as many different types of people as possible. This results in somewhat limited design because they cant stray too far from.... well black; how many adults want a colorful phone? But thats just taking something like color into account.
I don't know what other guys think about it, but for me I only concentrate on smartphone's functions.
I thinks smartphone is starting like NB, similar design with similar hw, except the Logo;-)

It would be nice if manufacturers added some customisation options into the phones they sell. Being able to have an engraving done when ordering a Nexus One from Google was a nice touch.
Perhaps more colour schemes and custom designed or patterned rear covers etc to help individualise our devices and set them apart.

Just tried the New Sprint Echo - Don't Bother.

Wow, complete fail. I knew I had my doubts about anything made by Kyocera, but I was not prepared for utter cheapness and ugliness of this device. And the screen quality - don't get me started. I felt like I was looking at a Blackberry from 2005.
The dual screen concept is nice and probably will be improved over time. But this first trip out of the barn really is a mule with a broken leg and a bad case of the mange.
If you were tempted to use your EVO trade-up for this device, save your time and money and wait for the EVO 3D.
Right now the only Android MFR's to consider are Motorola and HTC IMHO. Didn't think this device was worth anything anyway
Well OK you can add Samsung to this list
I was looking at this phone when I realized my 2 year was up on April 1st. It seemed interesting but I just knew there wouldn't be any app support for it. I have read a few reviews saying that the hinge, although goofy, is surprisingly strong.
I was going to just wait until the Evo 3D came out and not even get the Evo, but I caved. In a way I'm glad I did though, I have it all rooted and installed C7 on it with Tiamat 3.5.7. I used these forums to customize my hero as well.

Dual screen cellphones are a great idea. I personally feel they may be the wave of the future just like multimonitor computer setups are so popular now. However, this phone is little more than proof of concept. Sprint will take a bath on this.

Thanks for confirming what I already suspected. I have not had a chance to handle one yet, but the looks alone told me it was gonna be el cheapo. Kind of a shame really. The concept is pretty cool. I don't think it's going to last because of the introduction of flexible LED displays in the near future. Much better if you don't have to have a seam in the middle of your display!

I demo'd this phone in store today, also. Sprint tech was "watching TV" on it at the front counter. Played with it for five minutes:
Hinge has an addicting snap sound to it, as is the whole process of folding/unfolding the phone. Even having a 1GHz Snapdragon, the phone was still laggy (opening apps, scrolling through the drawer). As we all figured, besides the Sprint bloatware, this phone is pretty much AOSP--I don't believe Kyocera ever threw in their own frontend.
Rep was running Sprint TV for roughly twenty minutes, and battery was already down to 78%! Battery percentage indicator is stock, at least. LOL! Kyocera has thrown in an extra battery in the package for a reason.
Screens by themselves are SMALL! We know the specs, but looking at the screen IRL leaves MUCH to be desired. All in all, it's a novelty, at best. You're not getting anything practical out of a dual screen phone unless you ABSOLUTELY need to shave MILLISECONDS off of your time. This phone is a miss for me, which sucks, because I was looking forward to it because my phone upgrade is due in July. EVO 3D, here I come.
My oldest son was buying his finacee an evo while my youngest son and I played the echo...I asked the manager how many they have sold and he said no a one...That was 1:34 pm today.

Critical battery, guess it's been 2 hours, time to change to the other battery :/...
I bought one yesterday to replace my EVO which I have had since launch and had the extended battery for.
I just cannot understand where all the hate for this phone comes from. With the screens open it is nearly tablet sized. I call this phone more of a "tablet crossover", where it does great as a phone and then when needed gives you a ton of room to work on things in near tablet size.
The phone is also pretty small, but thick. Feels good in hand and in pocket and very well built.
Battery life yesterday was fine mostly connected to wifi. Today will be my first day out and about with it.
It has been buttery smooth for me, no stutters or lags. I've already become used to the small black space between the screens and don't even notice it. Not sure on the comment about the screen quality, both displays are superb in my opinion.
Sure, the phone is different than anything we have seen before. So far it has exceeded my expectations and I don't miss the Evo at all. Can't tell you how nice it is to flip the screens together to get some work done and have all the extra space.
A couple other thoughts -
I have mostly used it with apps full screen in tablet mode, and it has worked beautifully for nearly everything I have tried, including apps like Pulse reader.
Simultask works well also, although I haven't found myself using it that much. Was cool when I saw some mails coming in and I was browsing the web, I brought the mail client into one of the screens and continued to browse as I was reviewing mail. Also it's great how the mail client uses both screens to list mail on one screen and review on another.
Camera app is awesome with how it uses both screens.
Pretty much vanilla android 2.2 all the way around. Very nice in that regard.
Thread moved to General.

As with any phone, it is a matter of taste. For those who are more into utility and care less about aesthetics, this phone is probably fine. However, I am surprised you don't notice that the image quality on the screen is far inferior to the EVO? Like I said, I am a big fan of THIS IDEA, I'm just not a fan of this phone. Seems more like a proof-of-concept than a finished product.

I'm not sure if this is real on not but I really think the 4.5 inch display is not going to make the phone any bigger than our Nexus S is. They said the buttons will be soft so it will most likely be that the area where our buttons are will just have more screen there and probably a bit on top. .25 here and .25 there and you got a 4.5 inch screen. So for full screen apps it would make sense.

Sounds like its gonna be an awesome device. I hate the fact that Google has us at the palms of their hands with this nexus craze (reminds me of iPhones and their fanboys in a way). But ill wait till the price drops after launch to snatch one. That'll also allow me more time to enjoy my NS.

I'm pretty sure screen measurements are the diagonal. It will have to be a bit taller but also wider - it will be bigger than the current phone. Whether it the added width is enough to matter to you is a personal choice but when I compared it even to the 4.3" Photon I felt that the Photon was too big for me.
this new beast is 4.65" it's almost 5" size screen
it'll make nice for entertainment that's for sure

That display size is too big for my taste. Max is 4.3 .. more is just worse.

My phone should fit into the pocket of my jeans. Don't want to carry around an additional bag for the phone..

Well one thing to consider too is that a larger screen doesn't necessarily mean that your "viewing space" is going to be larger than 4.5" or even 4.3" at that. With the lack of haptic buttons or physical buttons (like on the tablets) your navigation buttons are going to be on screen and able to utilize that function to change as needed, but that "space" at the bottom doesn't mean it will be usable/viewable or add any real size to the device itself.
Think Samsung Continuum minus the buttons and with the screens merged (but hopefully a hell of a lot prettier).
It actually looks very sexy, clean and simple. I hope the build qualitty is decent, alluminium or smth.

Agreed. After owning the Nexus S, it's clear to me that even the Evo was too big. The clarity of this screen is incredible, and the size makes it feel like more of a phone, rather than a mini-tablet. If the Nexus Prime really is that size, I'll pass.

If you removed the capacitive buttons on the Nexus S and extended the screen down, that would be about a 4.5" screen.. Are you really saying that's too big for you?

Samsung was so kind and sent me an Infuse 4G to help me developing for it. Thanks Samsung Mobile Korea
Infuse use a beautiful huge 4.5" Super AMOLED Plus screen.. But its driven with Galaxy S screen settings
DROID Charge is very similar to the Infuse 4G, except the display is a tad smaller. Super AMOLED Plus screen is also optimized for non "Plus" aka Pentile matrix.
That's why by default everything is over-sharpened and colors over-saturated.
I added preliminary support today for much more faithful screen settings in my one of my in-dev apps "Voodoo Screen Tuning", available for free on Android Market.
This app is very much experimental and not a final product. See it as an internal leak from a R&D lab. But as Linus tells: publish often, publish early
Please take a look at the app description, and have fun testing this app!
I need your feedback, so.. see you soon.
Installed, I see there are two options, native and samsung. I assume native is to return to stock and samsung are to switch to the optimized settings? I got superuser request and approved after hitting the samsung button. Didn't notice anything immediately so I rebooted to see if that would make a difference.
Don't know or can't tell if there is a difference.
Any way to tell? Good news is it didn't crash on the charge.
Native is screen without sharpening or color boosting.
Samsung is.. Samsung default.
I don't own a Charge for tests so.. only you can tell me
I installed and swapped between the two. I couldn't tell any difference.
I am on a voodoo kernel so I wonder if that makes a difference...

The Native setting is *much* sharper than the Samsung setting.
Very nice.
I don't see any immediate changes in the look of the screen, nothing changes (or it's so slight as to be unnoticable, and I do have pretty good vision) when looking at a high res picture with the overlay on and cycling back and forth.
But it is doing something, the button backlighting turns off and turns back on, but only when pressing the native button. Or maybe I'm seeing things from staring at my phone for the last 10 minutes like a jeweler setting a diamond or something.
Edit: It is sharper on native, very small text is more defined. Cool.

Same here. Not really sure which I prefer, native looks a lot sharper but samsung looks a lot smoother due to the blurring effect.

Samsung setting is over-sharpened, which means it should "look" sharper, but all it does for real is exhibiting a ton of artifacts.
I guess it's why you find "native" sharper, because it just display accurately pixels as they're supposed to be
− apply sharpening general UI elements and text really makes no sense to me, so it's not the case anymore.
Also: note that if your eyes are accustomed to an artificially sharpened image, the normal one looks blurry for a few seconds in comparison.
But that's just an optical illusion.
Does the setting stick across reboots, or does it have to be reset every time?
Prior to tweaking the settings, I changed my wallpaper to one I had on my Droid X, but was forced to change from because of how bad the colors looked on the Charge. It's took a few swaps back and forth, but I was quickly able to see the difference.
If anything, native appears oversharpened. I can even see a bit of a grid on my solid green background. Text under native, to me, is reminiscent of my old fascinate which obviously had a pentile matrix but that might just be the roboto font I'm using.
Edit: okay I take back that bit about it looking oversharpened. Just took a little getting used to when looking at text but DAMN there is quite a noticeable improvement in picture clarity. Thanks a lot.

Just put the screen in overlay and swapped between the options. The OP is correct, the difference hurts your eyes for just a few seconds, but once you go to "Native" you will never go back to "Samsung." The change is VERY noticeable on your home screen app icons.
Native:
Edges are sharper and lines are cleaner. Text appears slightly crisper and loses the perimeter fuzz that I thought was light bleeding before.
Samsung:
The text is a little "better on the eyes" but at the same time it isn't as clear as in the other mode. Lines and text have a very very slight bleed to them.
As a side note, No color changes are experienced. This goes along with the OP's previous comment. The change is simply making the pixels on the screen display more accurately not making the colors display differently.
That's my review. I also noticed that I wanted to keep my phone at a a higher brightness to really enjoy the screen experience.

Correct. I did not mean to indicate that the color gamut was changed, but my old wallpaper definitely looks better.

Native “looks" better on high Res photos.
Samsung makes text almost looked bold.
Proof: try the overlay option and open xda on your phone/Google and find a high Res picture, then just switch back and forth. You'll be able to tell the difference easily.

"HTC One i" Design Concept based on HTC One Series

Here's a design concept I put together using AutoCAD 2012. I may have gone a little overboard with the suggested internal memory (I can dream) but it's just a concept after-all.

It may not look it from this angle, but the phone is actually curved slightly, and the camera lense is built slightly inset from the top & bottom edge of the handset, so the lense wouldn't get scratched when you place it down, something for HTC to remember next time maybe!
Here's a 10 second video clip of the model.
Comments welcome
NOTE: Looks a lot better in HD
New version, "HTC One L" is here.
Added HD photos. Credit to Milano for inspiring me to make this
Ideas for another design? something different?
It's pretty nice, but that camera definitely needs to be moved. I don't even want to think about the awkwardness of trying to hold that with one hand and take a picture.
a few things about this:
-the camera is ridiculous. can you imagine laying that thing down on a table?
-why all the third party apps, and stuff in the notification bar? it makes it seem less realistic.
-It should really have onscreen buttons.
-storage/ram isn't unreasonable at all.
-you left on the docking pins? i always thought more devices should have those, not less.
-looks like sense 4.1 to me. normally a jump in numbers means a change in UI.
-good going with the battery % image though, that should be standard on all android devices.
-if you want to make this a real superphone, try adding in a really great 8 MP camera sensor
-what's "full HD" mean? full 720p? TrueHD (1080p)? If its 720p, then you should bump it up to 800 x 1280, so it surpasses "retina" PPI. If its 1080p, than this should really be a 5"+ phone.
Overall though, I like it. looking forwards to seeing more renders form you

The camera wouldnt touch the table if u place it down, the phone is curved slightly to avoid this (it's hard to see in the image) The reason I put it there is simple, thats were I personally would preffer it to go. When I take pictures (landscape) I tend to hold my One X with both hands, and I'm always covering the lense up with my fingers. It's just an idea anyway, I'm re-working this design slightly in the next one, but for now the camera is staying in the middle :cyclops:
The apps... I literally couldn't find a decent quality screenshot of the generic ROM, so that screenshot is off my One X as is.
Onscreen buttons? It has the 3 touch buttons that the One series have.
I'd love to see a phone like this with massive amounts of memory. I have a lot of music (and I mean a lot, like around 3TB worth) so this for me would be a great feature, and I would happily pay more for that extra 32GB So this is kinda like my ideal dream phone really.
I contemplated about the docking pins but just decided not to add them, the next one has them
I used a screenshot from my One X running ARHD 9.x so the UI is actually sense 4.1 (I actually just made up the specs from my head).
Battery % image is from the Battery mod in the One X dev section, a must have.
Full HD just means at-least 1080p resolution. Like I said this is really just an idea, I didn't even consider the technical details until after the render was finished.
The next one is a little "curvier"

Ahh... yeah that would be better I guess. Save some of that valuable screen space. Although I do like how you can see the 3 buttons on the phone when the screen is off, and I know a lot of people use the middle button as a wake-up for the screen, instead of the power button. I may do a more unusual design after my current one

Honestly? no lol. I couldn't think what to name it, but I noticed the back curved kinda like the old iphone, so I thought, what the hell
It seemed clever at the time, "One i" / sounds like "One eye" :cyclops:
My next one is basically a re-design of this model, so it will look similar, but it has a new name will add it soon.
other than camera placing, i feel everything looks good
Added new version here
Yes the camera position is a screamer. Also... 2gb ram. This thing ought to run like a chicken on heroin. And maybe you should bump 8 to 12 megapixels. 8 seems to be the industry standard nowadays. Instead of the bezel being a constant thinness all around, maybe be a bit longer on the top. I can see that you wanted to make the back look like a real camera so you put the lense central. Great post though - refreshing.

All good, but the camera is in the wrong place. Congrats plasmadan !
I like it, but as almost everyone else stated; the camera placement is awkward.
I love this phone though, good job!
From the way it looks, having the phone curved that way would make it awkward to hold.

pretty nice, but its almost identical to the one x, and the camera is in the middle, not good
