So i have the Vibrant (3g) right now. I have had several problems and am on my second vibrant right now.
anyway, im not under contact and have had tmobile for years. so Im thinking about trying to have them give me another phone.
So ive got a few questions about the Galaxy S 4g compared to the vibrant. I realize the SGS 4g is basically a vibrant with FFC and 4g radio
1. does the Sgs 4g suffer from the GPS problems that most Vibrant users have faced?
2. how is development here for the sgs 4g compared to the vibrant? are our Vibrant roms and kernels compatible with the sgs 4g?
3. if the vibrant roms and kernels are not compatible, how is the development scene? choice of custom roms? OC kernels? ect...?
4. do you guys have Voodoo to try to correct the lag issues with the RFS file system
EDIT: after looking some more, its looks like your development scene is pretty quiet...? so compared to the original vibrant, would you guys say not to switch to this phone?
any other info I should know?
Thanks in advance
1. Haven't encountered any
2. Vibrant Roms not compatible with SGS 4G
3. Not many custom Roms yet but we are making progress
4. There is Voodoo and it does improve performance and battery life, there wasn't really any lag even without it
Its a great phone, hope this helps

we have voodoo sound, have not seen the lagfix yet. We recently got the Bali kernel that was released for the vibrant. The bali kernel has been a great improvement for our device. little to no lag, LONGER battery life and no issues thus far.
all the other questions, ricky already touched on.
cool. thanks guys.

-I've encountered GPS Problems, as well as quite a few other members. It's a general Galaxy S problem.
-Development for this phone is VERY limited, but the few devs we do have are pretty dedicated. I'm pretty satisfied, but coming from the vibrant you may be disappointed.
-Vibrant ROMs/kernels are NOT compatible, sadly. Many have tried using them...and well....unless you like carrying around a brick for a phone, they're not compatible.
-There's one OC kernel. I don't know much about it, but looking in the android development section you should find some info.
-Voodoo did in fact come out for GS4G a few days ago i believe.
Good luck.

I don't think you could take a current SGS ROM and flash it on the SNS without tweaks and mods to it. Hardware drivers are probably different, so that's the first issue you'd have. Also, depending on the version of the SGS you have, even the physical buttons are off.
Some people were able to run i9000 ROMs on the Vibrant with only minimal issues, but folks on the Captivate had screen orientation issues and other stuff. We know for a fact that the radios in the SNS are different than the other models (low power chips).

Give it a little time, the phone's only been out 5 weeks. The Galaxy S variants, even the i9000, which came out globally and first (last May), didn't have many custom roms until at least a month (I think MCR was first in June), and the action really didn't get heavy until August/September (so 3-4 months).
We'll hit critical mass soon enough with the devs.
Cyanogen's almost ready for "beta" or "release candidate status", and MCR is looking pretty stable, and you've got Team Whisky/Bionix that many are praising. I think we're off to a good start, even if it's not a fast-running one!

Actually I believe we're on CM7rc9. Don't think they count as beta anymore given how stable it is. I use rc7 as my daily driver and I haven't had a single random reboot (even running an OC kernel). Honestly, yes our rom development isn't huge yet but morfic (think thats his name, the guy who makes the trinity kernel) is f***ing awesome. The guy really listens to the input of his users and just makes quality s***. He really is impressive.

Agreed 100% about morfic. I remember him in the early days of the Galaxy S i9000.
I didn't know Cyanogen was at rc7 already. Good to know, and time for me to consider actually using it as my daily driver. I'm actually pretty happy with stock Gingerbread, but CM has always rocked my phones that it's out for.

umm... no it isn't
a lot of 'developers' don't compile from AOSP source; instead they base their ROMs off CM7 or GRH78.. so they're probably waiting for that as a start (not meant to disrespect anyone)
I consider CM7 to be a significant point in NS (i hate saying SNS) development. The Galaxy S series have been wanting CM support for a long time and the NS is the first to get it. At this point, I wouldn't even know if the Galaxy S would get CM support or not, it might but given the difficulties with Samsung releasing the source for drivers; it'll certainly be difficult as well as the Galaxy S diversity (I9000, Captivate, Epic 4G, Fascinate, Vibrant) whereas the Nexus S is just the Nexus S worldwide.
Seriously,
I don't know how you think development is dead. If anything, it's just getting started. And there's 3 great roms to choose from so far. Many phone users are grateful for having even 1 modded rom to use. And, as mentioned above, CM7 was first working on NS's instead of the Galaxy S.
I see a long future for the Nexus S in terms of rom development. I'm sorry you feel that way. May I ask, what phone are you referring to that has "alive" development, as compared to our "dead" development?

What he said. That's one thing I highly miss about the G1. It was the first Android phone and thats where it all started. ROMs were all booming and now the community is all split apart.
It's not dead at all, it's just getting warmed up Once CM7's official RC or Stable is released (I personally consider the nightly to be a daily driver/stable), it'll be a gateway to many other great ROMs that is based off CM7.
Have been wanting to flash a custom rom for a while (rooted with unleash the beast, I know it's ancient) on 2.1, had been planning on DG's Cognition (was just updated to 4.3), but also came across Continuum v4, which looks great. Was leaning more towards Cognition, figuring it'd be more stable based on KB1, but not hearing any complaints from people using Continuum. Any downside I'm wondering to going with Continuum, as it's I9000 based 2.2.1? Thanks.
Edit: Now may be leaning more towards Cognition now that it's been updated (I think it was the Continuum theme that was luring me in)
not sure about continuum but it may have refernces to a nonexistant camera being from the i9000. not sure but i think all the newer roms have that fixed. really the only downfall of i9000 roms is that some people claim the att roms have better call quality because they use a different method of noise reduction, im not sure if that is proven and i havent run an att rom in a while, i do notice having more problems hearing people than when i bought the phone but i didn't notice it imediately upon flashing an i9000 rom so it is not a good observation. but the i9000 roms offer hsupa (over rated unless you tether and open alot of webpages at te same time) and a bit better benchmarks and maybe a little smoother.
neither is a bad choice and cognition has all the important mods like voodoo sound and lagfix and various tweaks. and oc/uv if you want to do that sort of thing so it is not limited much by being an att rom.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I think the AT&T version takes advantage of the audience chip for sound quality. Likely won't oc/uv, but looks like both have the ability to do so. Looks like both have the ability for lagfix with ext4.
As long as you've got the ROM flashing down, I would try several ROMS and stick with what you like best. Personally, I like Serendipity. No knock on any other custom ROM, but it's my personal preference. Happy flashing!
try out phoenix/firefly/supernova. all three are awesome man. really fast, super stable, smooth as hell, great battery life, gps actually works. the developers will help anytime they get the chance. which from what i've seen is anytime a question is asked. seriously really great roms.
I prefer i9000 based ROM to KB1 based ROMs.
KB1 is Android2.2 while i9000ROMs are on 2.2.1 now. I think 2.2.1 fixed some memory leaking bug.
Also I personally feel the i9000 ROMs are more polished.
My favorites are pheonix, supernova, and fusion. With firefly as number one backup.
I currantly have the vibrant and have a broken screen....tmobile says insurance will most likely send me a sgs,so my question is for those that went to the sgs from a vibrant.....how do you like the sgs compared to the vibrant....i for one know ill miss the large 16 gig internal memory....dont care for the ffc video chat that i know i wont use.....but over all whats your take?
Well, the galaxy s 4g has, well 4g. It does not currently have CM7 (Hope that changes soon!). But its Gps is not finicky and we have some great devs here, but not as many as the vibrant, but they work hard man! If you decide to flash roms, the minute you get the phone, you should start reading up on flashing roms correctly! or else you might brick, like I did to my first sgs4g We all love this phone, and are trying to get it even better, you will witness a legendary phone in the making if you read these fourms frequently! All in all, the sgs4g is almost excactly like the vibrant, but it has a bit more undiscovered tricks up its sleeve, i hope you enjoy the phone when you get it!
You know me. I'd pray for the og vibrant man. Development is way ahead there and you've got 15GB's more internal memory.
You can add the 2nd gen ffc to the vibrant. 4G is nice, but not crazy different. May be a moot point where you live too.
The sgs is great... Gingerbread ROM's are great too, but the kernel is killing things like cm7/miui.. And all those ROM's based off those don't exist here.

Thanks Callip i was definately looking for your opinion i am praying to get a vibrant back due to i use my lrg internal for transfering movies and such with my co-workers and friends,i basically use my phone as a computer and i will miss it
Although i really like miui i can live without it lol.....atm im actually running the sgs rom with voodoo lmao i kinda like it but i dont know if ill be happy with the phone
^ better go ahead and pick up a class 6 16GB card man.
Gingerbread roms are great on the sgs4g. Valhalla has been very stable/fast for me. If you like the stock + voodoo, this will not be an issue for you.
I personally miss miui and cm7. But I was a flashaholic. I am not realizing my personal life is better without all the fun my phone provided, haha.
From your last comment, memory can be fixed with the external card. Maybe it won't be so bad for you after all.
Wait how did you manage to break the screen. Mine fell screen first onto the corner of a fireplace from about 3 feet and nothing happened to it.
Sent from my galaxy s 4g using XDA app
Ive dropped mine many times never so much as a scratch on the screen....it only took this once...from waist hieght
Lol Callip im only happy with any 1 rom for a couple days now im back on project v and most likely will play with miui again next friday

wtf is this question? really. wtf?! you had a vibrant now you getting a vibrant plus. can't you figure out if its a good deal or not? ugh...
I had a Vibrant until I broke the screen. The 4g is more stable when overclocked and it since mid september it has a semi-official gingerbread 2.3.5 build from Samsung. Last time I checked, Vibrants only had 2.3.5 in CM7 and Miui flavors and they were all ported from someplace else. It's complicated to go from stock to 2.3.5 but it seems that once you've got a 2.3.5 rom installed you can just flash later 2.3.5 roms and they will work. Yesterday I flashed one on top of another without wiping anything and the phone worked fine. At this point wi-fi in gingerbread is feeble but we didn't have the GPS problems Vibrants had. The 4g depends on whether where you are has good 4g service.

Well, the OP clearly states:
"how do you like the sgs compared to the vibrant"
Perhaps you did not have the og vibrant and then the gs4g. I know, because you wouldn't say Vibrant plus.... this phone has good and bad qualities, esp compared to a later model. I was jumping for joy when I got the 4G.... and then it was followed with "Oh... really... dang.... Oh..... ouch"
Like I said earlier though, based off what he said (minus the flashing a lot), the sgs4G is a great phone, and will be for him too.
There is shortbus riders in every forum lol I expect that
Hey everyone I am possible coming over from the G2x, someone on craigslist offered to even trade me for a perfect condition gs4g, I used to own the vibrant and liked it, seems like there are not as many custom roms as the vibrant, or an ics build, just wondering if this would be a good trade, knowing all the bugs the G2x has.
I own a Vibrant also plus a sgs4g and I really like the 4g alot. You are correct that there aren't as many roms to choose from, but the ones we do have are awesome.
+1 to that. Our few devs are great at what they do.
Go for it. I picked up a g2x a few months back. Used it for a couple months and came back to my sgs4g. The galaxy is a far superior device in every way, except the processor. And the g2x is to much of a headache to make that very slight speed difference worth it.

If you like to have many options with flashing stuff like kernels and roms, then don't. If you like what you see here, then yes. I would sell that G2X and get some money to get a GS2. Nuff' said. This phone is a pain when it comes to hacking.

i wouldn't recommend it, i currently am using this and looking to get rid of it, it crashes on me and has to restarted once in 3 days, also i see no signs of android 4.0 coming to this. I'm trying to get the mytouch4g as there is hope for ICS on it (and it has more memory)

That's strange - my SGS 4G doesn't crash on me and reboots have been dealt with... and I see better ROM's coming than ICS. I wonder if it is user error
I have both and can honestly say that g2x is wayyy better... the best roms for the galaxy like ravers are not even close to stability or performance of eaglesblood or Hellfire roms for the g2x. And its also officially supported by cyanogen which is nice to have an actual cm7 and cm9 rom . so if your having issues with the g2x I'd look closer at the forums those old stability issues with the lg software are long gone and you can have a phone that kills the sgs2 in all benchmarks. I'm getting a 5200 in quadrant and can get about a day and a half of decent use.

SGS4G
Hey Guys, this is my first post. I own a SGS4G and I think its a pretty cool phone. I have flashed to a bunch of different ROMS and I have had very little problems with any of them. The biggest problem I have ever ran into was finding the right modem that would switch from Wifi to the Tmobile network properly but the KI3 seems to have taken care of that (running on day 2).
I almost went with the G2 and I probably would have if Tmobile didnt have a really good deal for the SGS4G... but I am very happy with my choice.

Hi folks,
I'm coming from a Droid -> Epic -> Captivate Glide -> Relay S 4G.
I was curious what the best ROM is for stability and being fully featured? I've seen the CM10.2 nightlies, but not sure if those were completely functional. I know we have issues on the Captivate Glide with bluetooth, but otherwise, the ROMs worked fine. Was considering even just getting a debloated stock ROM, if one exists...
Also, it looks like the method for root is VERY complicated... Looks like it tries to flash its own recovery back unless you reflash and do everything in a specific order... I'm assuming there are no one-click root + recovery's?
Thanks all!
The person who wrote that guide was on acid. Just flash recovery with heimdall/odin, wipe system and data, and load up cyanogenmod. or flash supersu. whatever.
Sent from my SGH-T699 using Tapatalk
rooting is quite straightforward:
flash clockworkmod recovery via odin
copu supersu to sdcard
reboot to recovery
flash supersu
then you can install titanium backup and debloat stock or install cyanogenmod (via clockworkmod)
if you have not unlocked it yet - do it as described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255892
this method works only on stock ics (4.04), if you are on stock jb (4.1.2) and not unlocked you must flash ics, unlock and then go back to stock jb or anything else you like.
i personally prefer debloated stock jb over cm nightlies for now (only my subjective opinion, it may change in future)
My own path is N900 -> Xperia Pro -> Captivate Glide and I'm seriously thinking about trading up to the Relay 4G.
So if you could share some of your experiences it would be very nice.
I'm mainly tired of the Glide because of the GPS, modem deep sleep and skype issues.

Well I don't want this to go to thread drift, but...what ROM are you on? Or are you using stock? The only reason I ask is because I've been considering buying BOTH the Glide and the Relay 4G. Both are pretty cheap on eBay, and brand new in the box. Plus, you never know when you'll need a spare phone...
If its that bad, well, I'll just stick with the Relay 4G. Everything I read about the phone seems awesome.

Stock is just awful on the Glide. I'm not a fan of the customizations that Samsung normally does on their roms, and ICS for the Captivate Glide is pretty awful. If you are used to stock android / CM its a huge step down. Plus, it's noticeably slower than the Gingerbread rom that shipped originally. The first time I booted the phone it was buttery smooth and it really wow'ed me. Then I immediately upgraded to ICS and the smoothness was gone.
As for ROM, I've been using spyke555's CM10.1.0 RC2 rom ever since I got the phone. I could try a newer one, but most of them seem to have the same issues as this one, just with a newer Android. I don't think this will ever get fixed. On the flipside, it is very very stable, and performs quite nicely.
How is your experience so far with the Relay?

Oh I don't have one yet, I'm trying to time my purchasing the Relay 4G with my return trip to Mexico. Mexico only uses GSM phones (in the USA I have a CDMA phone, the Epic 4G), and I have an unlocked Gravity 2 phone, so I figure I'll go back with an Android this time. That brought me first to the Captivate Glide forums, and then here.
I remain impressed with the Relay 4G to the point I am constantly scratching my head as to why its not more popular than it is. The Captivate Glide...well you can buy them in abundance on eBay, brand new too, but they are officially discontinued. The Relay 4G isn't. I guess that should tell me something. lol
My biggest concern is bluetooth. While I love CM (even with the hit on battery life), I miss bluetooth. So I've already decided when I get the Relay 4G, I'm using stock all the way. I think/hope it'll get Kit Kat, so I should be fine. I'll just root it and keep moving.
