[Q] Thinking about getting GS4G - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hey everyone I am possible coming over from the G2x, someone on craigslist offered to even trade me for a perfect condition gs4g, I used to own the vibrant and liked it, seems like there are not as many custom roms as the vibrant, or an ics build, just wondering if this would be a good trade, knowing all the bugs the G2x has.

I own a Vibrant also plus a sgs4g and I really like the 4g alot. You are correct that there aren't as many roms to choose from, but the ones we do have are awesome.

+1 to that. Our few devs are great at what they do.

Go for it. I picked up a g2x a few months back. Used it for a couple months and came back to my sgs4g. The galaxy is a far superior device in every way, except the processor. And the g2x is to much of a headache to make that very slight speed difference worth it.

If you like to have many options with flashing stuff like kernels and roms, then don't. If you like what you see here, then yes. I would sell that G2X and get some money to get a GS2. Nuff' said. This phone is a pain when it comes to hacking.

i wouldn't recommend it, i currently am using this and looking to get rid of it, it crashes on me and has to restarted once in 3 days, also i see no signs of android 4.0 coming to this. I'm trying to get the mytouch4g as there is hope for ICS on it (and it has more memory)

That's strange - my SGS 4G doesn't crash on me and reboots have been dealt with... and I see better ROM's coming than ICS. I wonder if it is user error

I have both and can honestly say that g2x is wayyy better... the best roms for the galaxy like ravers are not even close to stability or performance of eaglesblood or Hellfire roms for the g2x. And its also officially supported by cyanogen which is nice to have an actual cm7 and cm9 rom . so if your having issues with the g2x I'd look closer at the forums those old stability issues with the lg software are long gone and you can have a phone that kills the sgs2 in all benchmarks. I'm getting a 5200 in quadrant and can get about a day and a half of decent use.

SGS4G
Hey Guys, this is my first post. I own a SGS4G and I think its a pretty cool phone. I have flashed to a bunch of different ROMS and I have had very little problems with any of them. The biggest problem I have ever ran into was finding the right modem that would switch from Wifi to the Tmobile network properly but the KI3 seems to have taken care of that (running on day 2).
I almost went with the G2 and I probably would have if Tmobile didnt have a really good deal for the SGS4G... but I am very happy with my choice.

[Q] What will you do when there is a real GB or CM7?

I came from a MT3G (which I loved) and then a MT4G (meh) to the SGS4G. I have loved being able to flash at will, and Odin makes it really hard to screw up beyond repair. I tried most of the GB ROMs, but ultimately realized WiFi was my killer app, so I am back at Froyo ICBINB.
The devs are really amazing - quick, helpful, dedicated to a (sometimes) thankless endeavor. I appreciate all the magic you do with this hardware.
That being said, I feel like I would jump ship to either stock GB (assuming it had decent WiFi) or CM7 (if it existed and had decent WiFi).
My question is how many of you feel the same? Should I feel disloyal? Should I assume that as soon as Samsung and T-Mo push the GB release that Valhalla (and ICBINB and Audiophile) will also fix the WiFi issue? (I love Valhalla, by the way, but the WiFi thing...did I mention that?)
Anyway, I just wanted to start the discussion. Flame gently if you choose to.
If it was me i'd still stick with the sgs4g. after using super amoled i don't want to go back to the other screen, the screen size is smaller in the mt4g, and the 4G speed is slower in MT4g.

Re-read bro that's not what he's asking
On topic I don't even know what's so great bout cm7 so I am perfectly fine with the gb roms right now but I would flash cm7 to see what's so great...would not flash stock gb by samsung though because as you said, roms would be based off of that so everything that that fixed will be fixed in custom roms too

yea I personally would like a stable miui than a cm7..seing as in miui the wifi is MUCH BETTER and just like the feel to it..dont hold your breath for Samsung to get it together..they haven"t fix it in so many leaks!..but yeah if it gets fix,by Samsung the devs here will update their series with the latest Samsung version!

I don't see the concern here. When an official GB is out, it's not like the current development stops, it just gets better.
I certainly will not be on stock. I'll be on stock tweaked by the devs.
I'm hopeful the kernel gets sorted out and CM7/MIUI becomes officially supported like it is on the other galaxy variants.
At that point you'll have people adding tweaks to CM7...
things will get better, not worse.
+1 once I got a super amoled I can't see myself using anything but a samsung

From Vibrant to sgs people

I currantly have the vibrant and have a broken screen....tmobile says insurance will most likely send me a sgs,so my question is for those that went to the sgs from a vibrant.....how do you like the sgs compared to the vibrant....i for one know ill miss the large 16 gig internal memory....dont care for the ffc video chat that i know i wont use.....but over all whats your take?
Well, the galaxy s 4g has, well 4g. It does not currently have CM7 (Hope that changes soon!). But its Gps is not finicky and we have some great devs here, but not as many as the vibrant, but they work hard man! If you decide to flash roms, the minute you get the phone, you should start reading up on flashing roms correctly! or else you might brick, like I did to my first sgs4g We all love this phone, and are trying to get it even better, you will witness a legendary phone in the making if you read these fourms frequently! All in all, the sgs4g is almost excactly like the vibrant, but it has a bit more undiscovered tricks up its sleeve, i hope you enjoy the phone when you get it!
You know me. I'd pray for the og vibrant man. Development is way ahead there and you've got 15GB's more internal memory.
You can add the 2nd gen ffc to the vibrant. 4G is nice, but not crazy different. May be a moot point where you live too.
The sgs is great... Gingerbread ROM's are great too, but the kernel is killing things like cm7/miui.. And all those ROM's based off those don't exist here.

I know, I was just trying to be postive
Thanks Callip i was definately looking for your opinion i am praying to get a vibrant back due to i use my lrg internal for transfering movies and such with my co-workers and friends,i basically use my phone as a computer and i will miss it
Although i really like miui i can live without it lol.....atm im actually running the sgs rom with voodoo lmao i kinda like it but i dont know if ill be happy with the phone
^ better go ahead and pick up a class 6 16GB card man.
Gingerbread roms are great on the sgs4g. Valhalla has been very stable/fast for me. If you like the stock + voodoo, this will not be an issue for you.
I personally miss miui and cm7. But I was a flashaholic. I am not realizing my personal life is better without all the fun my phone provided, haha.
From your last comment, memory can be fixed with the external card. Maybe it won't be so bad for you after all.
Wait how did you manage to break the screen. Mine fell screen first onto the corner of a fireplace from about 3 feet and nothing happened to it.

Ive dropped mine many times never so much as a scratch on the screen....it only took this once...from waist hieght
Lol Callip im only happy with any 1 rom for a couple days now im back on project v and most likely will play with miui again next friday

wtf is this question? really. wtf?! you had a vibrant now you getting a vibrant plus. can't you figure out if its a good deal or not? ugh...
I had a Vibrant until I broke the screen. The 4g is more stable when overclocked and it since mid september it has a semi-official gingerbread 2.3.5 build from Samsung. Last time I checked, Vibrants only had 2.3.5 in CM7 and Miui flavors and they were all ported from someplace else. It's complicated to go from stock to 2.3.5 but it seems that once you've got a 2.3.5 rom installed you can just flash later 2.3.5 roms and they will work. Yesterday I flashed one on top of another without wiping anything and the phone worked fine. At this point wi-fi in gingerbread is feeble but we didn't have the GPS problems Vibrants had. The 4g depends on whether where you are has good 4g service.

Well, the OP clearly states:
"how do you like the sgs compared to the vibrant"
Perhaps you did not have the og vibrant and then the gs4g. I know, because you wouldn't say Vibrant plus.... this phone has good and bad qualities, esp compared to a later model. I was jumping for joy when I got the 4G.... and then it was followed with "Oh... really... dang.... Oh..... ouch"
Like I said earlier though, based off what he said (minus the flashing a lot), the sgs4G is a great phone, and will be for him too.

[Q] G2X Questions from a Vibrant user looking to Upgrade

Okay, a friend wants to buy my Vibrant from me and I am actually happy with it except for lack of any decent options to move from 2.2.x without losing battery life/gps (that's a different forum's discussion)..
So, I don't want to spend a LOT but I don't want a dog of a phone either. I have some specific questions on the G2X...
1) CM7/MIUI: Are they *100%* functional? As in, no "but" or "except" in the list. On the Vibrant, for example, on CM7, you get bad battery life, limping GPS and broken 911 calling. Is CM7 a viable option on the G2X for a daily driver? I am personally tired of seeing threads on various phones I've had in the past that said "100% functional" but when you get to using it, turns out it's not.
2) LG Support -vs- 3rd party. I am *not* asking if LG is going to release ICS. What I am asking is, will the dev community be dependent on LG's release to be able to properly support ICS in the future? Ie, again, on the Vibrant, CM7 is broken because Samsung never released a GB rom for the Vibrant and thus no kernel source. Is this going to be a problem on the G2X if LG doesn't release ICS?
I really don't want to spend the extra $100 it will cost me for a Sensation 4G.... I'm just not sure, basically, what to expect of 3rd party and specifically AOSP/CM7 support for the G2X in the future...
Input?
There will never be a perfect rom, ether gps, wifi, data, bluetooth, something will not work as it should, so if you want a "100% no buts, long lasting perfect phone" get one of the Motorola razr v3 or one of those flip phones from back then.
1. No ROM out for the G2x is perfect consider LG's work was far from perfect and what we have is much improved, but still a work in progress. Do we occasionally have APN issues (I never have, but as a community, yes) or sleep of deaths (Funny you mention, Sensation gets them too), yes but they're few and far between and there is work being done to fix them.
2. Because CM and a few others build straight from source, at this point it shouldn't matter if LG makes an ICS build or not. Maybe for a few things, like AD2P function, but otherwise, I'm not concerned.
I have a lot of friends who own Sensations, and I still think I made the better purchase in the G2x.
Hands up for g2x, friend have sensation, htc desirr, hd2.. 3 of us have rooted g2x with miui as last rom... all good

I came from a Vibrant and I'm so thankful I chose this phone. It feels better in the hand, it's faster, CM7 works better, the GPS works and the HDMI output is really nice. I'm iffy on buying a Samsung again after having the Vibrant.

Besides the fact that I scratched the screen 2 days after I got it, and the ICS uncertainty, I do like it a lot. I especially like the price T-Mobile is running it at since I'm on the Value plan and had to pay full price.
It does seem that the modder community for this phone is a bit smaller than the Vibrant.

Tmobile G2X or Tmobile G2?

Hey, everyone. I just joined these forums because it seems to be a very large network. I am thinking about purchasing a smart phone. I have two options as of now, and those are the G2X and the G2. I don't care if it has a physical keyboard or if its touchscreen, as long as it works fine, I don't care. Specs-wise, I LOVE the G2X, it seems like a nice budget phone. After doing minimal research, I came across countless threads in various forums of G2X users complaining that they were getting overheated batteries, two crashes a day, etc.
These threads were from a while ago, so I was wondering if they found a solution to this.. I know a little about rooting and custom ROM's, and I will probably do that, and get ICS on my G2x/G2. I love the looks of the G2X and how it works, etc. The only problem is I don't want it to crash. I then started looking at the G2.
I like the G2 as well, but its a VERY old phone. It still has 4G, but I am a little concerned about the hinge. The battery life seems great and all as well..
Bottom line is that both phones are very great. I prefer the G2X since it is newer, faster, and has a lot more features. Only problem is that people KEEP saying that it crashes or that LG sucks. I was thinking about picking up a used phone off of Ebay or whatever.. Can you guys tell me what you think? I REALLY want the G2x, but if its gonna crash, I will go with the G2. Like if the solution to the problem is as simple as rooting the phone and installing CM9, I will go for it.. PLEASE TELL ME ASAP!
Thanks in advance.
If the crashes the bugs r worrying u then I suggest u stick with the g2 rather than the g2x......but if u want to tweak our phones and suck every single processing power out of it go for the g2x.....
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk 2
Haha, thanks for the fast reply... Well, both for me.. I want to tweak the crap outta it, and the crashes annoy me haha! Is there any known cause/fix for the crashes? I will do anything to fix them because the G2x seems like a GREAT phone!
If you don't car about the ffc or dual core processor, go for the G2. It probably has a fully working ics rom and nearly fully work jb rom simply because it doesn't have a closed source processor like our g2x. When I was looking to buy a used phone off eBay last year, I would have gotten something different if I had known the processor was closed source. Gb roms are fine for me, gets the job done but come on. gb is 2 generations old. We will never have the same stability on ics or jb roms.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Ughh, haha. I love the specs on the G2X. I agree, the G2 is a very old phone, but that doesn't usually bother me. The dual-core processor is what really gets to me. Seems like a great phone actually, and it may be too late to go for the G2, its very old. I will only be using this phone for 5 months before purchasing a newer one, so G2x or G2? And have you experienced any major crashes? I want to make it as bug-free as possible, so what ROM should I go for? I really appreciate it.
The G2x has a plethora of awesome, stable ROMs based on GB. If you really want ICS, though, it comes with some bugs on our phone. I personally don't think they're a deal breaker, as I use mine as a daily driver on ICS, and I rely on my phone due to my chosen profession. However, it all depends on how much you can put up with. ICS on G2x means no video recording, very unreliable video playback, occasional data drops, and potentially no Bluetooth calling depending on what Baseband you're on.
What is does come with, however, is an amazing set of devs that made this phone bearable.
Hope that helps

Buy a used phone
Can you pay for a phone outright? Or are you just going for the free options?
Swappa.com has a bunch of phones that would work for t-mobile, and you can switch to the value plans or even monthly(no contract) plans when you bring your own phone.
I wholly endorse buying a phone out of contract, I've done it for years and it's saved me money in the long run(used phones) while still swapping phones every year.
Thanks a lot, rtotheichie. I appreciate your reply. Seems like all of the complaints I have been seeing are from a while ago. According to you, the dev team has now released many stable ROM's to make the phone "bearable." I need video recording and playback, so I would like a ROM that is very stable.. I would rather have no video playback than crashes and reboots. I guess I will go with the G2x then. If all these ROM's really fix the problems, I'm gonna LOVE this phone! Should I go ahead and purchase it on Ebay? Please tell me beforehand. I am in a tight situation and can't be wasting money on junk that doesn't work well..
Thanks!
Go for the g2x its the better of the 2 phones, ics on this phone is gimped due to lack of drivers that lg or nvidia wont release. Still tho our devs have done an outstanding job on these ics roms.
Personally ill only use gb roms since there the most stable, cant go wrong with cm 7.2 stable this phone is still beast!

Still, the main problem prevails.. I don't want crashes/reboots! This is a great phone, and hopefully custom ROM's can take care of the crashing issues! Can anyone else tell me if they still have problems with their G2X?

g2x for the love of the hardware
G2 for the love of the software
Which one makes you more involved in a phone?

With the news of ICS coming, I'd say G2X. There will hopefully be more development whenever it is released. It is great value for the hardware, afterall.
Out of those two..def g2x. hardware wise it still competes with phones coming out this year...now software, that's a whole other ball game. Lg/nividia (cough cough)

Current state of your g2x

Well as you all may know, LG claims korean devices will get ics. We have been holding our breathe for a long time, suprised we are not all dead yet. Regardless, what does everyone think about the g2x and the current development that is going on? I myself am quite frustrated with it. I can get jellybean to build but it is still very much broken, and I refuse to release something that turns my device into a paperweight. I will open source my stuff before too much longer, just to see what others can do, but I do not see many people, deving, modding or even themeing anymore.
I personally like my g2x it stomps my galaxy nexus in quadrants (which means nothing, I just like the big numbers) but it also seems to handle games alot better. I have been through 6 defective ones but, I still hang on to it. I have sold all my other devices besides my nexus and my g2x.
I am sure I got off on the wrong foot with some people, however everything I said came true. Certain teams claimed other teams work as their own and refused to submit their minute changes upstream as required by the gpl they claim protects their rebranded work and now all further development has stopped. The more people that work on something the better off the chances are for success but yea.....anywho
This is not intended to be a flame thread or an i told you so thread. This is intended to find out what everyone thinks of the current development and state of their phone. I want to know what the average user would like to see. What is everyone looking for besides the perfect jellybean/ics rom because none of them will be perfect untill LG gets off its ass.

I don't mind if I don't get ICS, cm7 is stable as hell (using kameask or however you spell it), plus faux keeps up with kernels.
V6 super charger makes it twice as snappy, and testing out swapper again just to see.
But regardless, this phone does everything it needs to do at a very good pace. I don't mind if it doesn't get ICS . There isn't much benefit over it then what we have now.
I love the phone and the support from the community but despise the neglect from LG/nVidia. I was running different ROMs until I needed full bluetooth support on the v21y baseband so now I'm back on stock Gingerbread :-\
I bought this phone on contract with intentions of it being future proof and lasting the full 2 years. A year into my contract and the specs are still great on paper. A little bit more RAM would be nice but I can work with it. Just please LG, hook us up with ICS. I don't really want to cough up 400 bucks for a Galaxy Nexus...
I love my g2x...I have been messing around with Harsh's kernel for CM 7...(I even got a OC/UV version...hehe)...I thought about making a CM7 kang (with tweaks and what not)...or an AOSP GB ROM...but right now I'm in school...and debating if I should put the time and effort into development...I don't mind...I'm still learning about how kernels works...and would love to develop something (or at least help out) for our devices...
I like my g2x a lot. Bought it off eBay 7 months ago and have been impressed with the power this thing has. I am very distrought that we are 2 versions of android behind. Yes we have ICS but its not to the level of perfection I need and thus am still on GB. This is my 3rd android phone and I have never fallen this behind thanks to devs of xda.
I understand the driver/source code issues that are holding us back. If we can get a port of our Korean counterpart's ICS, then I will most likely just hold onto this phone for awhile longer.
My contract us up in 3 months and I could save money by going to a monthly plan. If we can't get fully functioning ICS though, I'll be hopping on the note 2. I'm getting the note 2 regardless, but would just like to wait till the right deal comes along instead of paying top dollar.

There are still some ports showing up, but I see 2 things being a barrier to more/better dev activity -
1) Driver availability. Both ICS and GB. ICS ROMs are stuck on things needing HW acceleration, for example. The Froyo camera is almost fully ported to 2.3+ but not exactly. JB - even more so.
2) In call BT audio for new BB. Even though we can flash to have custom ROMs work with v21y, this function is still not working. That is a big reason why I have quit flashing the past few months.
I do like the phone and will keep it until it breaks.

Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I don't attempt to run ics or jb roms anymore, they still seem unstable. But I am quite content with gb, though I still haven't found a rom+kernel that solves everything. Either it lags or I get SOD/overheating. So far I like cm7 nightlies best, don't know which kernel to go with though.
Galaxy Nexus is on it's way. My G2X is just too buggy, but I am going to keep it as a backup. Plus I want to go to an unsubsidized plan as the rates are much cheaper. For the same price I pay now I can get unlimited talk, text and data, plus hotspot (which I am not paying for now but have been warned that it will soon be an additional $15/month). I make back the cost of the GNEX in one year with the better service and reduced rate.

I like Kwes and BuruRom rooted stock in addition to Temasek's CM7. I've got my phone figured out. If/when (on CM7 based roms) data drops or MMS bugs cause me frustration, I just restore Nandroid back-ups of those rooted stock version(s). If I need to drive an HD movie out the HDMI port for my kids in the backseat, I have better results with Morfic's kernel/CM7. Yeah, the phone runs hot (gets unstable) when pushed hard. It still does all I ask of it - day in, day out. I plan to make it work till I am eligible to upgrade. I hope my replacement for my G2x won't need to be any bigger. I miss the days of being able to forget my cell phone is in my jeans pocket!
I am waiting for a new nexus phone to come out and i am going to buy that and ditch the g2x. I am still running Bionix Reloaded because it is the best rom I have found to date and I have no reason to switch. I tried some ICS roms but my battery died in a few hours and I barley got a data connection. I appreciate all of the hard work and development with the G2X but LG killed it by not releasing drivers. I find it really sad because the G2X is such a powerful phone. I think it is still competitive with current phones that are being released with the software being the only exception. I told myself I will never purchase a new phone unless it is a nexus phone due to the fact that they will get updates.
LG definitely lost my business for a long time.
Personally
I would love to develop for the G2x(I'm learning, but just barely) , but I can't see much that I am capable of doing right now. I'm gonna cook versions of CM7 and play with building kernels. We are in a holding pattern until the nVidia drivers come forward or the CM7 bluetooth thing gets resolved.
Going to keep the phone until at least Christmas, even later probably. My Nexus 7 has made my g2x have great battery life!

Lol... I got my nexus 2 or 3 weeks ago and swore I would sell my g2x ( at one point I was contemplating having my friends form a firing line directly at the phone. Then sending the video to lg and nvidia, interrupted by Linus giving them the finger.) But I haven't. I really love the phone to be honest. I was lucky enough to get one without major screen bleed and it has only locked up on me twice (PC/UV kernels).. I'm seriously contemplating keeping it as a back up phone.
I do wish that nvidia and lg would hurry up with the update so I could play around with fully functioning jb Roms, but since I know nothing about coding, I'm no help.
I also notice fewer and fewer devs working on it. I hope they are just waiting for the drivers tho.
So all in all, I still have the phone, even though I have moved on.

Thanks for OP posing this topic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors in G2X sections, it has benefit me as a Wind Mobile customer in Canada.
I am am not looking for the next new Android OS, I just want a custom ROM that has little or no bloat-wear that is very stable and utilizes the phone's fullest potential. LG /or Wind Mobile has abandon the upgrade to our phone and it is stuck at 2.2.2. We screamed, we yelled, we petitioned and its not going any where. Therefore I will not buy/support any Korean manufactured phones in the future.
So, please keep up the good work.
Thank you,
Cody

Agreed, the devs here have done a wonderful job. Though I don't blame them for moving to another device.
I am running ics(hellfire sandwich) on g2x. Except the camera everything seems to work. Waiting for jellybean. I dont think i will change my phone atleast this year. All the games run well. I am dissapointed cuz we are being ignored by lg and nvidia.
