[Q] How to install a custom rom - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read a lot about the custom ROM's and I'm interested in installing one.
The reason I don't do it is because there isn't a detailed step by step tutorial out there.
They are all missing some steps.
So could someone write a step by step tutorial without leaving Anything out. If there's a really detailed tutorial then a lot more newbies like me will start installing custom ROM's.
So what I mean is a step by step tutorial starting from the stock android.
Is there someone willing to write it?
Thx in advance

[Q] Hi All, Nooby Newbie Here!

Hi All!
I'm new to all this Android stuff. However, I followed a guide on here and rooted my Desire S. I followed the guide to the letter but my phone has been a misery since doing it. I can't update any software, the signal is poor, text messages keep failing to send and the phone hangs and the only way to make it work again is to restart it which is getting annoying.
I rooted via Revolution, do they provide updates and if they do how do I access them? I need to do something as my phone is poorly.
I look forward to your advice.
Thanks.
Install a new rom. That may help
Hi, thanks for the advice, but as I said I am new to this and installing a new ROM is like nuclear physics to me. If someone would post up a concise, comprehensive and simple guide with links I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you.
As a complete noob myself I followed the video by desire s fanatics on you tube, it really did help me to start with. There are also numerous pages on this site with links and in depth detail, have a search around and best of luck : )

here's list of everything you need. Download one of the "latest" rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601
I'm now using "Endymion V3.0" (It is almost stable. I didn't find any problem with this rom) and sometimes ICS (still in beta verson but is based on Android 4.0).
You can try any u like. U can remove and install new one any time. so doesn't matter..
Method 1)
copy the rom file in SD card and restart your phone in "BootLoader" (easy way to get bootloader option). . if you didn't find that option in ur rom. then simply power off ur phone. Power on and press Volume up (side left physical button) and press Volume down (just below up button) + Power button. You'll see the bootloader screen. Since you have already S-off and root ur phone, u must be familiar with this screen.
go to Recovery option..
Method 2)
Restart ur phone to recovery mode from power option. (Some rom may not have this option.)
When u r done with Method 1 or method 2,
- next steps are to Wipe Data & Cache before installing ROM.
Now when u r done with these steps.
- go to "Install Zip from Sdcard"
- go to "Choose zip from sdcard"
NOw choose the rom file you just downloaded and wait for few minutes (it may take more than 1 minute.. )
After installation, you'll get the menu again, just reboot the device. ur new rom is ready to use.
OR
If you have Rom Manager installed in ur mobile.,Open it, choose Install rom from SD CARD, browse the file. It will automatically restart and install the rom.
This is the easiest way to install ROM.
Hope this will work for you as well. All the best.

Rooting 4.1.1 help

Hello everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this and possibly help me. I'm new to all this, only had my GS3 for about a week now an I'm in love with it. Switched from an iPhone, finally got tired of having to jump through hoops to install what I wanted on my device.
So I followed this guide here to install Jelly Bean on my VZW GS3. I got jelly bean installed just fine, did step 2 just fine (though I'm not really sure what that does for me) but I'm getting stuck on Step 3, rooting JB. It says to download the file and put it on your SD card. Do I just literally download the file, take my SD card out of my GS3, put it in my computer and copy the files over to it? If I do what folder structure do they need to be in? Just sitting on the root? Please help me out if you can, thanks a lot.
your link doesnt work. use the one i provided.
your phoen comes with ice cream sandwich. you can root it and unlock the bootloader and then you will be free to install jellybean and custom ROMs. see the link below. i think it will lead you in the right directino.

First off, thanks for your help. And I fixed the link, just had to wait 5 minutes before I could post the edit because I'm new.
Yes, it came with ICS. I already had it rooted.
Then I went and installed the Jelly Bean rom from the link I provided. It wiped out the root that I had on ICS. Now the root procedure I used for ICS doesn't work so I'm trying to follow the procedure from that thread.
Just so I wasn't confusing anyone, I AM on jelly bean.
The link you provided doesn't seem to contain the NO DATA WIPE part of the link I used. I don't want to lose the stuff I have already.
if you were rooted and unlocked why not just flash a zip in recovery? this seems like a lot more work than you really needed to do.

Why don't you try asking in the thread that has the root method, you are more likely to get help there. Also why bump a thread the same day you started it?
Also from what I can tell from just quickly skimming over the steps in that thread, you're going to download step 5, not step 3 unless you never want to flash another ROM which I guarantee you will want to do when the official released jellybean come out, so you have an unlocked bootloader AND root. If you only do step 3 then when you want to flash a rom you will have to go back and do step 5 anyway.
What you want to do is download the zip file from step 5 and place it on your SD card or you can just download it directly with your phone, reboot into recovery by powering down the phone and holding volume up/home/ and power. Then you are going to go to install zip and find the file you downloaded in step 5 and select it and flash it. Viola.
Don't take this the wrong way, but you need to go back over droidstyles guide and real it thoroughly so you understand what flashing a zip in recovery is because that's what you're doing to get root and an unlocked bootloader on this. Also as for file structure, you want your micro SD card to be fat32 otherwise neither CWM not TWRP will read it.
Edit:
Step 2 is giving you a custom recovery with which you can flash ROMs or other mods to your phone. Look for droidstyles guide in the development section, it is stickied.

Thank you very much sir. I will follow your instructions.
I couldn't post on the forum where the method was because it's in the development section and I'm new. You're required to have 10 posts to post there, when I try to post it tells me to post in the Q&A for any help I need, which I did. I'll go look for the droidstyles guide. thank you

[Q] Installing a new ROM for the first time...?

Hi everybody, first post on this forum!
I'm sitting here with a GT-I7100 and was reading alot about the ARHD 9.2 ROM, which I'd like to try. However, I feel like I've entered a giant jungle with only a little nail scissor as my only tool. I've read countless of threads regarding bricking and only god knows what. I'm still convinced (bricking aside) I'd like to install a new ROM, and the ARHD 9.2 install instructions (found here) are extremely easy to follow. I am now wondering if it really is this easy, or if every single ROM developer on this forum expects you to have some software already installed on the phone for a ROM flash to succeed?
I'm at the moment running the stock software as configured by Samsung out of the box. Are there any steps I have to take before following the (oh so easy) install instructions found in the ARHD 9.2 thread? If so, where can I read more about them - and are there any guides with simple step-by-step instructions which explanes each and every step? The amount of terms I've found on these forums are overwhelming, and I therefore feel the need for a thread like this.
EDIT:
After even more reserach, I've managed to convert all of the above to a few steps, which I hope are correct.
1) ROOT using CF-Auto-Root (thread instructions here)
2) Install ClockwokMod ROM Manager and then let it flash Clockwork Mod Recovery by itself)
3) Backup current ROM using CWM and then continue to follow the instructions found in the ARHD 9.2 thread.
4) Install Triangle Away to reset the flash number.
5) Have fun!
Is it this "simple" or are there steps I've missed, still? Please tell me, since i'm not sure about this one, really.
Also, do you still need to root the phone using step 1) or will CWM do it for you aswell?
NEW EDIT:
Found this thread which explains all required steps in detail.
This thread can therefore be closed, thanks.
Best of Regards,
Christer F

I have successfully rooted two devices using xda forums. Just make sure you read on past the tutorials. Most of the time you will find valuable information on what errors other users encountered and so on. Once you start flashing rom's it's hard to stop.
Recently purchased a tablet and looking for rooting and mod, thanks
No neee to worry... simply keep backup everytime...

Install Lineage OS - TWRP / Magisk on Samsung S10 Exynos (970F)

Hi guys
Hope all are well. I really really need someone to help me with a todo guide to get this done.
I phone is currently using the latest June security Patch (Odin Flashed) One UI 2.1
I am so confused about the instructions on various sites and youtube. The Videos on there is about 6 months old. I tried installing TWRP via a guide i saw online, but could not get it done.
Now when my phone starts i get a bootloader unlocked warning message. This is fine. it still boots into Android 10, and is perfectly usable. Can someone who did this, please point me in the correct direction? I tried last night for hours, could not get it done.
The sequence of events etc are all different on the sites, and some does not make sense.
I hope i can actually do it on this version, as i see alot of the threads are April 2020'ish,
Thank you so much guys!
Hi guys...

Check out this guide from the TWRP thread, it might be good to read the first page or two of the twrp thread aswell so that you dont miss any important info. Also make sure that you get the right TWRP file for your specific firmware version. Good luck
PiCkLeS said:
By clicking on the button below you will get a set of instructions, step-by-step, on how to install Ians excellent work with TWRP as a recovery for your device and John Wu's root via Magisk.
This is not the fastest or most uncomplicated tutorial to do this. It is, however, made to make sure as many as possible succeed. So if you feel that a step or two is uncessesary, this tutorial is probably not for you since you most likely already know enough to just go by Ians more direct instructions. So dont PM me with tips on how to simplify these steps, I already know about that and that is not the point of the tutorial.
The instructions are intended for:
The user that either is completely new to this world but have managed to get an unlocked bootloader beforehand
The user that just want to have some instructions to follow to not forget a step in the process
Please note that the tutorial should work just fine for the S10E-device, but there might be another set of key combinations for your device, please take care to understand what you need to do in specifics to do the same presses of buttons.
It is strongly encourage to flash lates stock firmware and do a complete clean system install before using this tutorial. However, if you know what you are doing, it will work fine with an already rooted system as long as you have the latest Canary build (both magisk and magisk manager) on your device when patching the TWRP-image and the firmware AP-file per instructions below.
Where ever you decide to start, know that your device will be wiped and you need backups for your relevant data before you begin.
These instructions are ...
.. an "add-on" till John Wu's Magisk solution that will make your device rooted with Magisk and having Ian Macdonalds TWRP-recovery
.. for those who have already an unlocked bootloader - DO NOT attempt this without first making sure you have "OEM Unlocked" enabled
Step-by-step guide:
A) Follow John's instructions HERE until you get to step 5, then return here
B) Download latest TWRP-image by Ian Macdonald for your type of device in the first post in this thread
C) Download latest multidisabler-zip by Ian Macdonald and copy it to your SD-CARD - download here
D) Copy the TWRP-image to your device and do the same as you did with the AP-file in Magisk Manager (Install->Install->Patch file and choose the TWRP-image)
E) Copy the patched TWRP-image and magisk_patched.tar to your computer
F) Rename the patched TWRP-image to "recovery.img" on your computer
G) With your own choice of program on your computer, open the "magisk_patched.tar"-file, remove the existing recovery.img and replace it with your newly patched recovery.img and save the tar-file
H) Boot your device to download mode
I) Go back to John's instructions and IGNORE step 6 and DO step 7 and come back here!
J) We now need to factory reset our device:
-> Press Power + VolDown for a few seconds to get out of download mode
-> AS SOON AS THE SCREEN GOES BLACK: Press Power + Bixby + VolUP and HOLD THESE KEYS FOR A LONG TIME until you see the bootlogo of TWRP, then release the keys
K) In TWRP, install your downloaded multidisabler-zip from your SD-CARD and DO NOT REBOOT
L) In TWRP, format data (not only wipe, choose specifically "Format data" and write "yes" and go ahead and after DO NOT REBOOT
M) In TWRP, go back to the start screen - choose "Reboot" and choose "Recovery" AND NOTHING ELSE - DONT touch any keys on the device
N) Go back to John's instructions and begin from step 12
O) All done - you know have a rooted device by Magisk, with TWRP as recovery - enjoy and be sure to thank Ian Macdonald for the help with TWRP and John Wu for Magisk root!
