[Q] Hi All, Nooby Newbie Here! - HTC Desire S

Hi All!
I'm new to all this Android stuff. However, I followed a guide on here and rooted my Desire S. I followed the guide to the letter but my phone has been a misery since doing it. I can't update any software, the signal is poor, text messages keep failing to send and the phone hangs and the only way to make it work again is to restart it which is getting annoying.
I rooted via Revolution, do they provide updates and if they do how do I access them? I need to do something as my phone is poorly.
I look forward to your advice.
Thanks.

Install a new rom. That may help

Hi, thanks for the advice, but as I said I am new to this and installing a new ROM is like nuclear physics to me. If someone would post up a concise, comprehensive and simple guide with links I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you.

As a complete noob myself I followed the video by desire s fanatics on you tube, it really did help me to start with. There are also numerous pages on this site with links and in depth detail, have a search around and best of luck : )

here's list of everything you need. Download one of the "latest" rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601
I'm now using "Endymion V3.0" (It is almost stable. I didn't find any problem with this rom) and sometimes ICS (still in beta verson but is based on Android 4.0).
You can try any u like. U can remove and install new one any time. so doesn't matter..
Method 1)
copy the rom file in SD card and restart your phone in "BootLoader" (easy way to get bootloader option). . if you didn't find that option in ur rom. then simply power off ur phone. Power on and press Volume up (side left physical button) and press Volume down (just below up button) + Power button. You'll see the bootloader screen. Since you have already S-off and root ur phone, u must be familiar with this screen.
go to Recovery option..
Method 2)
Restart ur phone to recovery mode from power option. (Some rom may not have this option.)
When u r done with Method 1 or method 2,
- next steps are to Wipe Data & Cache before installing ROM.
Now when u r done with these steps.
- go to "Install Zip from Sdcard"
- go to "Choose zip from sdcard"
NOw choose the rom file you just downloaded and wait for few minutes (it may take more than 1 minute.. )
After installation, you'll get the menu again, just reboot the device. ur new rom is ready to use.
OR
If you have Rom Manager installed in ur mobile.,Open it, choose Install rom from SD CARD, browse the file. It will automatically restart and install the rom.
This is the easiest way to install ROM.
Hope this will work for you as well. All the best.

[Q] Phone not booting.

Right first off, I haven't searched the forum as I'm not exactly sure as to what to search for as I dont know the exact problem.
I want to flash a new ROM on my sensation and this was very easy to do on my old Desire. So what I did was:
1. Followed the tutorial to turn S-OFF - Done.
2. Followed Step 2 to install recovery. Put the file into my SD card but then the instructions weren't clear as I couldn't see any options to click Accept as the guide said.
3. Downloaded the Android Flasher app. Did these options:
- Chose sensation from the menu.
- Downloaded Radio "HTC-RIL 2.2.0169HMQ" and clicked the box.
- Clicked the Recovery box and chose the Recovery file I had put on my SD Card originally.
- Clicked Bootloader and chose "MIUI.us_pyramid_1.11.18_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed_TwinDragons"
- Chose my own splash screen.
4. Then I clicked flash and everything was ok. Phone booted into Hboot and the program said complete.
5. I rebooted the phone and the splash screen loads then.....nothing.
I was then unsure what I have done wrong. I tried rebooting several times to no success so I wiped the phone and installed MIUI again via the SD card but to no avail. I can still access ClockworkMod Recovery but thats it. Any help would be mucho apreciated.
I am new to android as well but what i understand from your situation is you flashed the radio wrong . Don't worry your device isn't bricked try re flashing radio VIA ARHD recomended ... I may be wrong but if I helped you out hit the thanx button below
Cheers for the help saddist. Will have a go at this when I'm home as I'm at work the now. I thought that the radio was purely for...well as the name suggests the phone's radio.
Appreciate you taking the time to help as it's a bit of a pain not having access to a phone.

I don't quite get what you've done. Did you try and flash a ROM using Android Flasher? If so you need to walk away and do some serious reading as you WILL brick your phone if you continue

why you don't flash the rom via cwm??
its easier i think...

I would have done this at first but, before using the Anroid Flasher app, I did not have access to cwm. I have since tried formatting the phone in cwm and installing from sd card but again, it just hangs after the splash screen. I also downloaded Bulletproof 1.4 to see if applying a Sense ROM had any effect - but again it stalled after the splash.

Yeah your correct Eddy, as my post above states, I turned S-OFF - got a bit stuck and then seen the ANdroid Flasher programme. I thought, smashing problem solved.
You are correct, I do need to do some more reading with the looks of it. On the desire, a programme did all the stuff for you. It seemed to me that the Android flasher was the same.
Where to start reading, I'm a bit unsure as I have a phone which is not booting. I'm not looking for everyone to do all the work for me, but if someone could give me a gentle push where to start in order to get this working again that would be great.
Meanwhile I'll do as you say Eddy and do some more reading.
Thanks everyone for your help. I got it sorted by flashing CWM manually this time and it flashed the ROMS so that they would work. Must have been flashing them wrong somehow but still managing it without errors.
Anyway, again I appreciate you taking the time to help.

[Q] Noob Question ???? sorry :)

Ok so I've successfully unlocked my 4g slide that has the new OTA and is running the new HBoot. I flashed a new recovery (clockwork 5.0.2.7-doubleshot)..... Hboot unlocked, w/ Son And all is well. Now for my quesion.
From what I've read on the two latest stickied threads (thanks to the aurthors very easy steps to follow, I'll post the proper thank u's in the specific threads after my 10 post cherry pops) I should be able to gain su, and flash a custom rom all at the same time by, updating my boot.img, rebooting into recovery and then flashing my rom of choice. What's the command line to flash the rom?????
I know to flash the boot.img command is:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
But what's the command to flash the rom after rebooting into recovery?
Thanks in advance I rooted my g1 many moons ago and loved it, I've been waiting for some straight forward steps for the 4g slide, and ofcourse xda would be the place to go.
Um im kinda a noob aswell but all i do is power off my phone and hold power & vol down at same time then hit roob in recovery and install rom from SD card then when finsished reboot phone ?? idk if that helps you
humm...
Ok so it sounds like after the boot.img, and reboot in recov., u are just installing the rom from the sd card.
So does that automatically pick up the rom zip file that is being housed in the folder with fastboot, when plugged up via usb to the cpu, or is it actually installing a zip that you have placed the sd card?
Sorry to get super specific with the steps, I'm just so close id hate to paper weight it now.
Yea, you really can't brick it. Go ahead, I dare you to try. So far only one person that I know of has managed to do it, and they were doing something they absolutely should not have been and had to go way out of their way to accomplish it.
The days i've heard about of sub-standard NAND chips and unreliable hardware are long since past for anyone who purchases a quality device on the market today - and the doubleshot is the best in it's class without contention.
But, yes, you choose the option in clockworkmod recovery that says "install zip from sdcard", on the next menu choose "install zip from sdcard" and then it dumps you onto the sdcard and you have to find the zip you want to flash.
Pretty easy, if you already have a custom recovery the hard part is behind you. But no shame in getting stuck or being overly cautious - I am that way by nature and can appreciate the reservations. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.
Much apprecitated.... Its been a minute but when I did my g1 I was flashing straight from the sd card, I guess interacting with fasboot through the command prompt made me a little more cautious.
I'm going to go to a custom rom as soon as I get home, I'll post an update a little later, though I may not be able to power up in the bootloader with four fingers crossed <--- a terrible attempt at humor
To flash the rom, you'll want to go into recovery and use the "install file from zip" option, or something like that. From there, you can pick the zip that contains your rom.
Edit: whoops, didn't read blue's post because the text on my phone is too small. G'luck with your ROM flashing
ok so im back, it was touch and go for a second but i was successful, new rom, superuser and the whole nine.
had some trouble trying to flash Virtuous Quatro , i wouldnt mind trying that one, but i did get to load double shot lite. after some additional reading it seems like its a good stock rom, so im cool wit that.... now i can play around with some others
flashed pyro ice 1.1.2 and its pretty sick much better than the standard default rom, looks like now i need to figure out how to not loose so much data on a switch over, had my contacts synced but i lost half of them.
Things to learn:
file/app back ups - for quicker installation of fav apps
reliable contact sync (back up)
how to get this damn browser working...arggh
since i still cant post in the dev. threads to troubleshoot any suggestions or assistance would be appreciated
Titanium backup for backing up and restoring (apps although it can cause problems)
And as far as your contacts go they chould be linked with your google account, but to be safe you can go to contacts> Menu> More> Import/ Export and export your contacts as a vcard and import them in a new rom.
The browser idk. Maybe try clearing data and cache on it.
Thanks mark, your dead on i did a little picking around in and figured out app back up, i sinc the contatcs and exported a vcard.
As far as the browser i think it may be a problem with the stock browser, but from what im told opera, or qqbrowser should work fine. Havent tetsted yet but i will

[Q] Rooting, Flashing, Upgrade services needed!

I've searched & found 'How to....' threads on here but TBH I'm not a techy and most of it doesn't make sense to me.
I did try to upgrade from 4.0.4 to 4.1 this week and almost succeeded until some 'signature not recognised' message appeared. So I'm going to attempt another way (if possible/allowed) and ask if there's anybody out there who'd be willing to root (whatever that means), flash (ditto) and upgrade to 4.1 for me in return for payment.
I really hope this isn't against forum rules - it's a genuine, last-ditch attempt.
I live in the West Mids but travel a big chunk of the country each week so could possibly deliver the thing.
Here's hoping for an avalanche of replies.....
Can anyone tell me why I get the 'signature not verified' message please?
I've downloaded the upgrade from an October thread on this forum.
Which xoom do you have (wifi, 3g/4g, international, family)? Are you rooted yet?

Thanks for replying!!
It's the wi-fi model. As for 'is it rooted?' - I would say not. One, because it's hardly been used and two, because I have no idea what 'rooted' means.

Sorry I took so long to answer.
As for being rooted if you are the only one to have own the xoom and don't know what it means then you are most likely not rooted. Root is like getting administrator rights in windows. It gives you the ability to customize your device, install custom roms and also completely screw up your device .
You should be able to go to settings-about tablet--update (or system update) and it will check for your update and ask you to start the download and install. If this does not happen then you can flash back to Honeycomb (which I can walk you through this will also wipe all your data or maybe for a fresh start) and let your device automatically update to ICS (4.04) and the JB (4.1).
I can also walk you through rooting and installing a custom JB rom like you asked for free.

I've tried the system update and have been told that there are none. (In my ignorance I actually thought it would update to 4.1.2 automatically!).
Your offer to walk me through the rooting & upgrade is extremely generous and I accept without hesitation.
If it's flashed back to HC, will it default back to ICS or move to JB?
A huge 'Thanks'.
James
PS. Having tried numerous times very recently to upgrade there's no data to erase so that's not an issue....
I am going to give you the steps to unlock your xoom, install a recovery, root, install CWM Rogue Touch recovery (better than the one you used to root) and then install stock JB.
Now that we are talking root I am going to ask a moderator to moved this thread to the root section.
Here is how I rooted my xoom.
follow the directions here but instead of doing step 1 follow this for adb install http://www.support-4-you.com/main/i...ged-adb-installation&catid=40:how-tos&Itemid= it is a 1 click adb install then follow from step 2 on.
When you are done there you can install CWM Rogue Touch screen recovery
Download CWM Rogue Touch zip and put on the root of your external sd card. ( if you don't have a sd card we will do it another way just let me know)
Boot into recovery by turning your xoom off.
1. press power
2. when the moto dual core logo comes on wait 3 seconds and press volume down
3. recovery should be displayed across the top press volume up.
You can skip steps 1- 3 now that you are rooted if you download Quick Boot open it, select recovery and the grant Super user permission
4. go to install zip from sd card (just like when you rooted) and find the CWM Rogue Touch Zip and install
5. reboot your xoom
6. you now have CWM Rogue Touch installed.
To install JB on your xoom you do need an sd card for this part
DownloadJB stock for wifi xoom and copy to your sd-card
Here is the thread discussing this [JB]Stock Android 4.1.1 JRO03H, Root, via CWM Recovery (US Wi-Fi MZ604) and also there steps for installing it but I will post them for you here.
boot into recovery
select backup and let it backup your current system (a Parachute)
then select wipe factory/data ( I Can't remember excactly what it says because I use a different one)
then select install zip from sd card
locate the JB rom you copy to your sd-card and install.
reboot system (it will take some time the first time)
sign in to android with your gmail account.
You are on JB
Good luck and don't worry if something goes wrong we can get you out of 99.99% of any issues that arise.
dfib1 = I cannot thank you enough.....
The frustrating thing is I'm about to leave the house and am working away until the weekend so can't try it until then! I'll let you know the outcome.
Have a great day :good:
If you need help with his excellent guide just post here or hit with a pm
Sent from my Xoom using xda app-developers app
Ok, a quick mid-procedure question....
(I'm doing something fundamentally wrong because I can't quite finish the upgrade).
Do I install the folders onto the Xoom from the SD in a zipped or un-zipped state? I've tried both but no luck so far in completing the task.
I've rooted successfully as my PC recognizes the device. I believe I've installed CWM ok - is there a way to confirm this?
On the final 4.1 install I get the 'installation aborted' message as 'signature not verified'. One thing I may be doing wrong is installing the wrong files? On selecting the JRO03H folder I'm then given file choices and I'm clicking on what I think are the most obvious. I can post a list of the choices if it helps?
Sorry to be such a newbie pain - I realize that these questions are irritating to those 'in the know'!
did you reboot after fastbooting the recovery? the recovery says clockwork at the top. It should also be touch screen controlled
When you move the zip over leave it as a zip on you xoom and when you flash the recovery will unzip it for you.
what step are you up to?
Sorry for the late update. I've tried the whole procedure several times from the very beginning, even removing previously installed Rogue & JB software, but STILL get the same error messages as previously described. I've re-booted at the right time according to the instructions but this still makes no difference, and have checked the 'USB de-bugging' option.
I did make a couple of basic errors in the Command function to begin with but realised these & corrected them. My device serial no. appeared so I assume I rooted successfully? I'm able to change Developer settings which I couldn't before. I even installed the USB drivers independently via the Motorola website.
I have a free day today so am going to make a bucket of coffee, make myself comfortable and start again.
One quick point - I'm in the UK and assume you two helpful guys are in the US? Looking at numerous sites it seems our respective Xoom models have different procedures which is maybe why this isn't working?
Thank you again for your seemingly endless patience.......
i believe you are getting these issues because you might still be running the stock recovery.
lets just backup and start fresh.
You followed the instructions mentioned before and I assume you have adb and fastboot installed.
Connect your xoom and make sure usb debugging is on.
open up a command line and type adb reboot bootloader
I'm going to assume because of the previous steps you unlocked the bootloader if not type in the command line fastboot oem unlock
You can download the recovery from here http://bit.ly/iLRAIV
If unlocked at the bootloader type fastboot flash recovery recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img Note:make sure the img file is in the same folder where your fasboot.exe is in the sdk
after it has been flashed reboot device by hold volume up and power.
Move the JB stock rom into your sd card. you can download the rom from here http://www.mediafire.com/?qhbhlbvu859bv0f
after the device restarts type adb reboot recovery
in recovery Wipe everything except the sd card. Then flash the above jb rom. In theory everything should work. If you keep getting the error get back to us because Im going to give up and guide you through the install of the Team EOS Jellybean 4.1 rom that I know works without issues. PM if you want to have my direct contact info for gtalk so we can discuss further for any issues.
OK I've just tried another 8 times to root the thing, c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y following the instructions step-by-step.
1. I don't have the 'from SD card' option, instead have 'from USB drive'. I have a 16Gb flash drive connected via an adaptor for the Xoom which doesn't appear to prevent anything as it reads the contents of the card just fine, unless you can tell me otherwise?
2. In Recovery I get these options:
* reboot system now
* apply update from USB drive
* wipe data/factory reset
* wipe cache partition
3. Even when trying the very first install (Rogue), I get:
--Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I love a challenge and always get a buzz when I manage to do something that is foreign to me i.e computers. On this occasion however I'm fast getting to the stage where I think it'd be easier to leave things at 4.0.4.
My reason for wanting the upgrade in the first place is because I'm comparing this tablet to my work-supplied Galaxy Tab 2 running 4.1.1. Realistically I don't think the two will ever be comparable and I'm probably foolish to think this could be the case. It only remains to say that I am so very grateful to both of you for taking so much time & effort in talking me though the procedures.
I consider myself pretty 'switched on' but this has me foxed!
Cheers guys - have a great weekend. Hope the snow doesn't cause you problems!
here are the outline of the steps
1. unlock your xoom
2. fastboot a recovery to install custom recovery on your xoom
3. reboot into new recovery
4. flash universal root zip to root your phone
5. reboot phone that is now rooted.
6. reboot phone into custom recovery again
7. flash jb update
I think you have missed step 1 or 2.
When you type fastboot oem unlock what does it say?
Hmmm, I MAY be one step closer?
After typing' fastboot oem unlock' the tablet has gone into 'Starting Fastboot protocol support' but appears to be stuck. Do I wait until it's done it's thing?
OR would it be a whole lot easier for all concerned if we tried your other suggestion dfib and flashed back to HC and then to JB?
What if you type adb devices? Does a bunch of numbers show up or does it say waiting for device?
Hold the front page!!!!!!!
I just watched a video on how to unlock and it's worked. You were quite correct - I had missed your point 1 above and probably point 2. I'm moving onto the next bit now....
Great let us know what happens. I will be around for a while.

[Q] LG Motion (Possible Cyanogen mod?)

Hey everyone! I would like to start off by saying that I am brand new here, and am surely going to mess up quiet alot... But here goes,
I've recently rooted my phone with a very simple guide, and it's the first device I've every rooted. So I know very little of the process of doing so, (I'm learning slowly).
I also have found a rom that I would like to install, but I would love to know if others think it seems legit? If it is real, I know many people would absolutely love to use it! The rom's URL is (ht tp:// playfuldroidz.com /wiki/ CyanogenMod_10_Motion) (Please remove spaces, sorry as I said i'm new...)
Now I don't mind testing this myself, but being as new as I am at android I honestly do not know how to follow the relatively simple instructions.
(This Is where I need some help, Please be noob cautious!)
Download the .zip & copy to phone or sdcard (make sure 4g or wifi is enabled if dl'd from phone).
Zip can be installed from either internal or external sd in CWM (Which ever you copied it too!)
MAKE A BACKUP!!!
DO A FACTORY RESET!!! - this will wipe data & cache!
Go to install zip from sdcard
Choose zip from sdcard
Select cm-10-xxxxxxxxxx-UNOFFICIAL-l0.zip
Confirm
Repeat Steps 5 -8 for gapps
Reboot
Now my first question I'd love some help with, is how do I perform this backup there talking about? do they just mean my simple go into settings and click backup? Or should I do it some otherway?
Second question: Do they mean the phones built in service of factory reset?
Third Question: To install a Zip from an SD card do I need to simply use ES file explorer, or root file browser? Or is there a custom way to install a Zip file on android?
Fourth and final Question: What is gapps..? Is this something I should get or use?
EDIT: I've got a fifth one also... Thanks to anyone who's stayed this long and is willing to help me.! Will this Cyanogen mod (If working) Work almost exactly like a real nexus Operating system? I've got a nexus 7 tablet running stock android, and I love it! That's why I'm doing this to my phone honestly.
Thank you all greatly!

Question 1,2 and 3.. they are all done through Clockworkmod. Look through the menus you'll see it if you still struggle look on YouTube.
Question 4.. gapps is Google Apps you need to flash this after the ROM to get the play store and all the other standard Google apps.
Question 5.. in your eyes pretty much, it'll look the same but with more features obviously.
Thank you alot!
Thanks! now i've only gotta do one last thing, and see if anyone knows whether or not this website is a reliable source, or atleast if the mod works...

(Edit) I don't think there is a clockwork mod for my device... According to the Rom Manager app I was told to use for installing it.

If you did what it said in the instructions *root it, cwm, install custom rom* then after installing the custom rom it has it's own cwm. turn off the phone, turn in back home and press the back and home button together at the same time and it should take you to the rom's cwm. If the phone does a factory reset by pressing the back and home button then you did the installation wrong.
But just in case I'll setup a full instruction for you.
Root your phone.
Which can be done easily, just download this and extract the files: http://www.mediafire.com/?dhdbwflnl1vknx2
once you extract the files put your phone on debugging mode which can be done by going to settings, developer mode, and click usb debug.
once you've done that connect your phone to the pc *make sure it's on charge only* wait for driver installation to finish. once that's done click root. follow instructions on the screen it shouldn't be too hard! after following instructions you should be rooted and have cwm. but to install the recovery go to your apps and find lte 2nd init recovery and then click the top button, agree to super su to use it and you're done with rooting and cwm! now. these files you were talking about, download them and put them on sd which can be done with a file manager. after they've downloaded go to the lte 2nd init and click the bottom button. it will reboot the phone and take you to cwm. While you are in cwm click on the home button to go to external which is the sd, then go to backup and restore, and click backup! this is very important. miss this step and things could go bad. Now all you have to do is follow the instructions you posted yourself and you should be done! if you need any help don't hesitate to message me. I've done this for a long time now.
Whoops forgot to add. the website IS a reliable source. Learned that cause I'm a risk taker and decided to try it out myself. and do not use rom manager or anything like that for recovery. ever. especially on phones that do not have their own recovery mode. also. the CM10 works great in my opinion! But there's a catch. for me at least. even though everything is perfect during phone calls I cannot use my 4g. which is a bad thing for me cause I need it. other than that if that doesn't bother you or anything or don't have service then knock yourself out and install the cm10!
COMPLETED) This mod worked, all things are now finished except one small issue!
So after installing the mod with some great help of someone here on this forums, I've been basically beta testing the mod for a few days. I have nearly no complaints, as almost everything works seemlessly just like you'd except the operating system to. In the end I found one single issue though, which is terribly annoying for me in specific...
My GPS isn't working, which could be one of many things other than the rom. Seeing as I only recognized It yesterday, there may be an outside reason it at random shut off. If anyone know's what can cause this, and a fix for it please comment back!
Thanks to everyone who helped with installing the mod

Please help me with the rom
Hey guys not sure if i am suppose to post this here but i couldnt find any where else and i couldnt find an answer with my exact problem, i installed this rom on my moms lg motion and everything went find untill i got to gapps it came up with an error inside of cwm so i just contined all the other flashes i had to do and rebooted i thought that i could just flash gapps later. But i mad a very big booboo i installed the Recovery APK for it in cm 10 i forgot all about pressing reboot and saying reboot into revocovery so i was going to try it though the Recovery APK so i installed the thing and pressed reboot and instead of taking me into recovery it takes me to a screen that says something like "mourning call error" which i dont know what means but i had to take out the battery and turn the phone back on so that worked and i got back to the home screen but i still cant install gapps so she can use all the google sevices i tried rebooting with the built in reboot into recovery (the one that you press reboot when you hold the power button) and that does the same exact thing i have no way of flashing gapps or anything else for that matter can someone please help me i have no idea what to do. everything i working on the phone but that. thank you sorry if i put this in the wrong place.
Confused my droid using this method- would love in on this thread
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place-punch me if I have-
I rooted my lgms770 with version f firmware- installed cwm and 2ndinit recovery (2nd init was the only known way (to me anyway) to get into cwm at the time) followed this guide ---
[LgMotion All Things root] and
[GUIDE] Unbrick OR Unroot LG Motion 4G [KDZ] - Android Forums
I am not allowed to post urls yet...sorry...its the the first google hit
I've tried multiple versions of the official LG Firmware flash, from the website, and by following this guide-
AOKP Dirty Unicorns baseless port cm10 - Android Forums Actually, its the unicorns that got me.
With no luck there. I am running Mint16, and had to run the programs through Wine of course, then tried Q4wine, and eventually tried running though Oracle VM, and finally, I wiped my ancient dell of Linux altogether and put WinXP back on it (took 2 hours, that). No cigar. And yes, I did the drivers, all in order, etc, tried again, reinstalled etc
I finally set up adb to try to get into this droid that way, but am having problems with port permissions (I'm going to guess that's on my pc's end-running Mint16)
I can access the factory reset screen (the black and white), download mode, and the battery charges on a black screen with a nice purple font, but I am still stuck in a bootloop. I've employed all known button spamming combos to get back into cwm (there is a nandroid in there somewhere)..but alas...
Help me Obi-Wan-Kenobi's..
Peach
I had the purple letters with no way to get to the factory reset screen i just used the lg online flash tool in upgrade recovery put in the imei of the phone in made sure the phone was in usb download mode then it was fixed but for some odd reason i still cant get my phone to the factory reset option. I apologize sincerely if I wasn't detailed enough if you need any clarification on it then let me know through pm or i could even send u a link to my box folder i keep the install files in.
(Also i have a one click root app for the LGMS770 So if you or anyone would like the link i would be happy to give it to you)

Full on Noob, need help if possible.

Okay so, I love my Infuse but getting really tired of not being able to download anything off the play store. Just tired of it's rather less than great performance right now as well. It's is running 2.3.6 GB and want to get this thing up to ICS if possible. Just something running 4.0 so I can use my phone for what I need too. It is not rooted, no cyanogenMod, NOTHING. As the title says, I'm a full on noob here and I apologize if all this is covered in other threads, however I have just gotten to the point where I have found myself even more lost than where I started on what I needed to do/get. If someone can, I will literally need this spelled out to me (no pun intended), in order of the steps I need to take with everything. I'm getting tired of confusing myself even more from all the different stuff I have seen all over the place and I know without some serious guidance, I will just brick my phone. Thanks for any help!
I understand this community can be a bit unorganized and confusing so I'll give you my process for rooting and installing custom firmware (there are other ways, but this works for my AT&T Infuse 4G SGH-i997).
First of all, no one uses ICS on the Infuse. There is a ROM, but it's underdeveloped because JB came out so quick. You will need to flash it to get to higher operating systems, but it is by no means a daily driver. Even JB is a little buggy compared to KitKat on the Infuse these days.
The first thing you want to do is root your phone and get a custom recovery.
There are more than a few options for rooting, but I prefer using ODIN (as I understand it, this is the tool Samsung uses to restore soft bricked phones). So this is a good thing to know how to do, in case you ever do soft brick your phone, you'll know exactly what to do.
Read the ODIN instructions in full as I will only briefly explain.
You're going to have to install Samsung drivers.
You'll be using UCLB3_Unbrick_root_1.1.zip. If you used UCLB3_Unbrick_1.1.zip it would just get you back to stock GB with no root added.
To put your phone into download mode, first turn off your phone. Plug a usb cable into your computer. Then with the phone off, hold down both volume buttons and plug the usb cable into your phone. A warning will come up and you push volume up to accept, realizing that you can easily soft brick your phone if you loose power or unplug during a download.
Once downloading is done, the phone will reboot and you'll be disappointed to see that nothing has changed. Except one small thing, you are now rooted and you should have an application called SuperUser that will allow you to do nifty and also dangerous things.
Now follow this step in the ODIN instructions to add the custom recovery (CWM = Clock Work Mod):
The version with root works exactly like the above version, but adds root. To add CWM recovery to the rooted version, download a custom Gingerbread kernel from HERE or HERE and flash the zImage using SGS Kernel Flasher (found in the Play Store) on the phone. If you go this route for root and CWM, your Custom Binary Download counter will not show any custom binary activity.

If you follow the link in the second "HERE," you'll get the kernel I prefer since it was most recently updated. Scroll down the downloads section and grab "2013.04.30-CWM-Synthesis-1.2Ghz.zip." (1.2Ghz is stock for our processor, anything higher will be overclocked which I don't recommend).
Extract that and grab the zImage file in the update folder. You're going to copy this to your phone in a second.
But first you need SGS Kernal Flasher, you can get it off the playstore, but I despise having to log in to an OS I'm going to write over in less than a minute so I download the APK from here. Hopefully you know how to install APKs from your SD card and that you'll have to check install from unknown sources.
Now flash the zImage using SGS Kernel Flasher. Your phone will reboot and hang on the Samsung logo and a creepy voice is going to tell you about how she's partitioning your phone and installing Voodoo lag fix. This is normal. Eventually your phone will reboot back into GB and you'll be ready to flash any ROM of your choice by rebooting into recovery.
You reboot into recovery by holding the volume up and volume down button while powering on the phone. This is different than download mode and will take you do a new screen that you control with the volume keys.
You'll be using this to put new software on your phone.
Now you can bassically follow the instructions for getting to CyanogenMod 11 (Kit Kat) from GB.
The first bullet is what I just explained in detail.
Note that I didn't include the links in these instructions, just follow the link above to get to the original post.
Obtain CWM, this can be done using Jscotts Odin back to stock (Follow instructions and use SGS kernal flasher to obtain CWM)
Run Qksters IMEI backup script here
Make certain you are on ICS, this can be done by flashing Entropy's CM9
It is recommended now that you remove your SD Card
CWM: Wipe Cache / Factory Reset
Install ROM: Scroll down for downloads sectoion
... The package will start to install..
... Phone will reboot into the install screen again...
... Continue to install [Automatically] If not manually flash again
... Phone will reboot again and be at the recovery screen...
Install Gapps: Here - Working swipe!
CWM: Wipe Cache Partition
CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot

To be clear, when you flash a ROM, it won't be like flashing the zImage (that was just to get custom recovery). To flash the CM9 ROM or Qksters IMEI backup script for example, you leave the rom in the .zip file and simply put it on your SD card. Once in the recovery screen, you select "Install Update from ZIP" and navigate to the particular ROM you wish to install.
Also after updating to a higher version of Android, your phone will sometimes hang on the install screen for a long time. If it does for more than five minutes, it's safe to pull the battery and try flashing again (and sometimes necessary).
After flashing Entropy's CM9, you will be on ICS, you can use if you want but I don't advise it. You should continue with the instructions and update to KitKat after getting to ICS. I recommend Scott's CM11 (what I linked you to) or Scott's BeanStalk (find it in the Android Development Section).
Lately I've been using CyanFox and I have to say, it's the most stable ROM I've used in a while.
If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask.
Best of luck and happy flashing,
~bokonon9
Thank you muchness!
Thank you very much for helping me in this mess! I greatly appreciate it. I love my Infuse and do not want to get rid of it quite yet so hopefully this will help! Once I get a new usb cord I will get on this. My toddler decided to get a hold of it and it has to set a certain way now and can't be moved. This, is no bueno! Anyways, THANKS AGAIN!!!
Goodluck! :good:
I'm new in the android world and I'm using a nexus 7 and an infuse to make experiments just to learn.
bokonon9, thank you! You're guide has been precious to me.
Unfortunately I only succeeded installing ICS, infact I get till here:

I tried to install CM11 and even CM10 at least half a dozen times each, following step by step the instructions that I've found on the thread but all the times I have the same issue:
after the zip rom update and the reboot, the bootloader keeps launching the CWM recovery. I see the logo, the progress bar and then I land in recovery
I don't get any kind of error (and I don't know where to look for to get more information than what's shown on the screen) and I'm just stuck in the recovery and I have to start from scratch every time using Odin all the way down.
I'm not interested in Gapps so, at the beginning I tried without installing them but then I tried also using the appropriate gapps as indicated in the procedure. Either way I didn't get any solution to my problem.
Do you have an idea? Is there a way for me to provide more information or debug?
Thank you!

i would say go back to stock gb with odin and basically start over but with ics i always let it reboot to get a "feel" for it then i reboot to recovery and wipe basically everything then flash the next level of android which should be cm 10 then i let that boot then repeat that to get to kitkat 4.4.3 CarbonRom....sometimes you have to flash the same rom twice to get it to flash tho
I already tried all that and I can't figure out a way out ... I'm really banging my head against the wall
