[Q] New to rooting; best Gingerbread ROM? - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi there,
I'm very new to Android and the rooting procedure. Basically, I switched from an iPhone to an HTC Inspire 4G after 4 years.
I'm going to try and root my phone tonight, and also unlock it and put HTC Sense 3.0 on it, but one thing I have been unable to find is a stable ROM for Android 2.3 that is as close to the stock version as possible. It may be right under my nose, but I haven't had any luck. If anyone could provide a download link, or a URL that points to where I could find one, that would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Best one for HTC sense 3 is CoreDroid. My opinion.

It might be best for you to not jump right into rooting your phone. Spend some time seeing how your phone works out of the box and what you might want to change. During that time spend time on this forum just reading and gathering knowledge. The more you read, the more answers you will already have.
Just my suggestion.

I really like the new sense 3.0 functions that are ported on the coredroid 6.5. P.S. It might be better to root before you get all your apps setup and installed like I did. Then I had no way of backing up since I had no root access and had to setup everything from scratch again.

Thanks for all the help guys.
darkside, I've actually had to phone for about a month now. Funny you mention using it and seeing what I'd want to change, cause one of the first things I did after a week of usage was make a small list of just those things haha.
In addition to unlocking the Inspire, and putting Sense 3.0 and 2.3 on it, the only other thing I really want to do is get all of that annoying AT&T bloatware off. That, and find something that can fix the battery life. I have no idea how to do either, so I think I will take everyone's advice and do some more reading before attempting this.

I'm using MIUI and its doing excellent for me.

Excellent advice.
You really, really, really should have a baseline by which to judge subsequent roms you flash.
Otherwise, you'll never have a full sense of what's working better or worse than something else.

Are you using the MIUI Rom here in the US on AT&T....and do you have any problems with apps in the app market? I want to find a decent GB rom but it seems like most are geared more toward the UK.
For example I'm using ClearDroid, I do a search in the market for the "Xfinity TV" app. It shows right up...I jump on LeeDroids rom, and no "Xfinity TV" app to be found.....And thats with installing Morelocale2 before setting up my google account. Obvioiusly I could care less about the app....it just makes me wonder what other apps are hidden from my view.

Interest in Inspire AOSP?

I was wondering if any of you guys were interested in full AOSP build or if CM7 was good enough for all you. If so, would you guys like optimized or pure vanilla, or both? I have some time soon, so if there's enough interest I'll compile a build for all y'all.
So who wants it?

AOSP=Android Open Source.
I had to look that up
That would be awesome! Either way would be good
Just how far from aosp does cm7 deviate?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Hellz yes please!
I'll give either one a go.
I, for one, would be interested in a AOSP rom for our Inspires. There are somethings in CM7 that I could careless for, although I found ways around them. ex: Removing ADW launcher and replacing with stock GB launcher.
Alright guys, I'll start work tomorrow and keep everyone posted through this thread, so check back

Exactly I love getting into new things, and AOSP was next on my list. Unfortunately, high school and a tattooing apprenticeship take up a lot of my time, so the kernel went unsupported for a bit. It's going on the backburner, but it'll be re-cooked after I finish porting AOSP. I'm shooting for a fully working MIUI kernel too now that we have gingerbread 1.3.18, but AOSP takes precedence. plus cattleprod should probably be able to beat me to it. so I should be able to get started tomorrow night, or Monday morning at latest.

Utilizing the source coding released by HTC, I assume?

There is absolutely nothing "inconsiderate" about not wanting to use a Sense-based ROM. No matter what the other chefs do (unless they build from AOSP), their ROMs will be bloated with Sense trash, and some of us don't like that one bit.

I think patience is what we need to have right now. Yes CM7 is coming for us, that is a given based on the screen shots we have already seen from kmob. Also, now that we have S-Off, I would expect that more developers will start to bring us their AOSP Roms. At the least we will see kanged versions of CM7.

Not inconsiderate... just the FACT... (in my case) will not waste time on ANY Rom... that's correct... any problems? I know every single ROM out there... from mike's Revolution HD... LeeDroid, CoreDroid bla bladroid... and non of them offer the true potential you can get out of your hardware as CyanogenMod does. RomManager full compatibility, and even the Android Store is full of CM7 customizations... ADW is really robust and there is no HTC Sence on this Earth that can get even close to ADW's complexity. Well that's only my opinion after years of installing Roms since windows mobile 3/4... Remember, we are all here to post comments and help each other...

ROM Manager premium - any difference from free?

Hey guys,
First time poster, great site btw ;-)
Just upgraded ROM manager to premium after my first couple of times flashing ROM's has pretty much got me hooked now.
Strange thing is there are no premium ROM's. Is this norm for Desire S?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Unlike many other phones which have hundreds (nay on thousands) of ROMs (some good, most not so good), the Desire S community seems to adopt the "I'd rather have a choice of about a dozen properly refined ROMs, some with Sense, some without" philosophy!
The crux is that we end up with a nice small selection of really well-built ROMs (compared to most other phones)... elliminating the hell of constantly tripping up on bugs found in many other ROMs.
Thanks for the speedy reply.
That makes sense in away, thanks for clearing it up some. More might make there way on it as time goes by.

Guy this question has been asked a thousand times with a thousand different answers. There is no top or stable ROM, they are ALL GREAT. Only what you feel best using and your needs of it. Try a few on for size and see what works for you and feels best for you. Coredroid for a stock look or absolution 3.7 for a no sense. But then these are my favorites but watch how many more responses you get till you get closed.

Look, I use my phone as a work phone (so I need an amount of stability), and I find aospx AR28 stable enough for a daily (that said, AR26 saw fewer freezes and reboots, food for though).
However, if you need camcorder, aospx (any ICS?) isn't for you.

Well lets start with congrats man on getting an Inspire. The Inspire community is awesome and there is a constant flow of great work being done by the amazing devs here. First, please search. I don't mean to come off as a jerk but it is part of the rules you agreed to when you signed up and literally if you searched "best rom" or "stable rom" you would most likely see what we have all been telling you and that is: There is no best stable ROM. Every ROM has its issues. What one person swears by another person won't. Only you know what you're willing to live with and live without. Try some ROMs out and see what works best. Here are my recommendations but they are by no means an all inclusive list of "best ROMs", just my personal preference.
Sense 3.5 = Bindroid
Basically stock = Cleardroid
AOSP/CM = Absolution
ICS = Redemption or Melchizedek
if i could stay on one rom long enough to find out if it's stable or not would be a great thing. stupid ROM A.D.D.

Don't forget cyanogen7.2 (newest release) for a wide variaty of customization.
Like others said before there are tons of roms in the developer section of the xda/inspire4g.
Welcome to the freedom of android. The best thing about rooting is the personalization. You can find just about any theme, os, app, or widget you can imagine.
Start with the ace hack kit, read the effin manual (that's what its called) do some reading on the available roms, download from the site or open up rom manager (if available) flash from rom manager.
Which ever rom you choose remember read the first post on the dev thread back and forth up and down. Once you do that...... read it again. All the important info you need for that rom is in the first post.
If you have questions on terms or what something is. Just Google said something followed by xda htc inspire 4g and you should find exactly what your looking for.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

As stated none can tell you what rom will work best or be the most stable on your device and your set up. Even stock roms have bugs. It is just something you live with or dig in and try to fix when you own a smart phone.
Just pay attention to the OP of each thread and so the proper research and you will be fine.

Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
It's harder then you think....
First you got to find an HTC device with a similar (preferably same) chipset...which is rare since most htcs run qualacom hardware
A while back I did find a device with pretty much the same chipset that should be useable...gotta see if I still have its ruu (ruu is HTC official Rom release...actually stands for Rom update utility)
You then gotta extract the ruu contents (requires both windows and linux...)
Then you need to build the infuse kernel from source changing the bootclasspath in the init.rc and other stuff relating to sense instead of touchwiz
I'm not saying its impossible...and its still something I would like to do...but unfortuantly I just don't have the time to really do anything anymore due to school and work...and I recently got into league haha...so when I'm not working or at school I'm either with friends or playing league...but usually I'm at work or school. Oh yeah my infuse also got stolen...so no device to work with anymore (damn car fishers)
That's the basics...theres a few tutorials on how to port sense to no sense devices that can help you...just google how to port sense
Anyways, good luck...thus reply was mainly.to let you know what your in for and what kind of computer setup your gonna need (dual booting linux/windows)
Edit oh yeah...pretty sure the device I had found had an ics 4.0.4 stock Rom...at least for Iraq users...but English should still be an option in that Rom and if its not we can always add it in...anyways ill let you know later if I can find the ruu/device for you to work with
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
Not to be mean, but I've got the hard part covered. There's a sense port for the captivate that rums on top of cm. I'm not saying that its going to be super simple, its also not going to be as hard as you described.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
I think were talking about similar but different things...
I think your talking about taking an sense Rom that's already been ported to a non sense device and then porting that port to us
I'm talking about taking an official HTC sense release, extracting the contents for a flashable zip and porting that
Regardless either way requires kernel work as the init.rc needs to be edited -which is an easy task for those who can work with source
Anyways, goodluck the more options the better...there will definitely be people wanting this as its unique for the infuse
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, if I wouldn't have owned a captivate, I wouldn't know about all of this, and I wouldn't even attempt this. And yes, I'm talking about a port of a port. I'm by no means a dev, but I'm slowly learning, and I thank you for your help.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
