New android security flaw affects 99% of phones - Thunderbolt General

If you use public wifi, here is another reason to wear a tinfoil hat

Yawn, old news.

Not connecting to unencrypted, public WiFi if you are sending sensitive data was the best advice I ever got in 1999.

(Q) Security question.

Just wondering what everyone uses for any kind of Anti Virus software for Phone and or PC. If there are any products tied together now.

I use Lookout. It seems to work for me, but I guess that's only something you really know when it doesn't work. I don't use anti virus for my mac. I'm hard core like that. not really

I use lookout for my phone. I can't remember what I use for my PC...I'll post that when I'm home later.

I don't use any on my phone or any on my pc. (windows 7)
Yea I agree, a good firewall and common sense have worked good enough for me for a few years now. Any protection just seems like bloat to me. (This is my opinion for the PC, I'm not as sure for the phone since I'm on my first android, so I threw Lookout on just in case )
on PC i use microsoft security essentials, along worth a hefty dose of common sense.
on my phone, I don't have any installed, as I don't routinely install apps I feel iffy about.
I have had a few macs over the past 8 years never ran any security software on them and was not the most scrupulous with my browsing actives....I havent put any thing on my phone yet either. I'm not sure if its necessary or just a waste of battery

I use lookout on my mez and nothing on my ubuntu box.Nod32 on my wifes xp box.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Nothing so far on the mez. I use Sophos here at work and it is by far the best I have seen and used. It is very light and has not let anything thru on our company network since implementation. (Knock on wood) We used symantec before and that software is very flawed and bloated. A good site to check oit is virustotal.com for single instance checks of files or websites
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I use MSE, I've tried them all and it has the smallest footprint and seems to be the best out of all the desktop ones. My school uses Sophos and I've seen multiple viruses get through. I don't use anything on my phone, they're all just annoying and in the way.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
I use AVG on both pc and phone. Never a problem. On the Mez the footprint is small enough and the only indication that it's there is that it scans the DLs as they finish. Not really much of a delay. Necessary? I dunno.

[HOWTO] Fix Facebook notifications!

This is a post from Android Central member ccw1134:
"So let's set the table here. Facebook Push Notifications are the golden egg that we're all looking for. Well after reading this you can go obsess about something else...finally (I know I will). I have been beyond frustrated with the chaos that has surrounded this subject. I've spent way too many hours reading and reading then reading some more. I am proud to say that I finally cracked the elusive Facebook Push problem.
I switched from Verizon to Sprint last week (work decision) so I went from a Droid Incredible to a EVO 3D. I was hoping that my Push notification would work when I switched since they never had. To my dismay they did not. My daughter went from a BB Curve to the Motorola XPRT and her FB push notifications worked! She always would always say "Dad you're phone's not so Incredible now, is it?" So when I got my EVO 3D and it didn't work I really became obsessed. After comparing settings on both phones and Facebook settings I found the one anomaly. The list of authorized apps within Facebook (Account dropdown>Account Settings>Applications on the right side of the page) on the computer showed "Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones" on hers but not mine. It's so simple yet outside of the box. The key is BlackBerry permissions! I am willing to bet that everyone who has working notifications on Android came from a BlackBerry. Okay onto the good stuff.
- Find someone with a working BlackBerry. This could be a friend or any store that has activated demo phones. - Using the Facebook app on the BB log into your account and wait for your stuff to start appearing. I did not log into email or anything else, just FB. - After you see your Newsfeed updated with your information simply log out. - Go into your FB settings on your Android phone and check the Notifications box. The refresh interval doesn't matter (it can even be set to Never). - Notifications should start appearing as you get them (Comments, Wall Posts, Pokes, Likes, Messages, etc.)
I did notice a couple of things that I hope get improved in the notification process. Messages and Friend Requests have their own separate icons for notifications just as they always have. Comments, Wall Posts, , Tagging, Pokes and Likes all share the new notification icon that you will start seeing. Because of this if someone pokes you and then you get a comment or whatever, your Poke notification is gone (I'm assuming because the FB App doesn't officially support Poking yet therefore it doesn't know how to handle that notification) and won't know who poked you. Also if you should happen to click on the poke notification doesn't take you anywhere useful, just the list of notifications (for the same reasons listed in the previous sentence). This is a small sacrifice for now. If someone tags you in a post (I assume a picture will be the same way) you also will still get an email notification to whatever email you use. Just an FYI on that.
For the record I am on Sprint using a nonrooted HTC EVO 3D running 2.3.3 and Facebook is version 1.6.3. I do not believe the carrier, phone model, OS or Facebook version matter but I know there are those out there who want to know this type of stuff."
I will be trying this out, seems promising according to replies there!
(mods, I wasn't sure if this would be the right place so feel free to move it.)

Nope. I came from BB to Android and while I had notifications working about a month ago with a FB app update (nothing to do with switching from BB to Android), they no longer work and they didn't work when I initially switched over either.
I just checked my account settings and the Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones is still listed there and still has permissions.
Think it is just a coincidence for you.

I don't know what the difference is but I installed the blacked out Facebook located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200174
And I now receive notifications for the first time. I just installed the apk today so for me it worked and I have no reason to understand, just that I now get notifications. Can someone else confirm with this that they receive notifications?
The only way i got them to work was to create a new fb account.

Nope, did it last night. Deactivated, then signed back in to reactivate, all from the browser. All your settings, friends, and such stay the same. Now I get every notification.
So you deactivated your whole account from the computer browser? Then reactivated it? No blackberry hoops to jump through.

Wow. So many different fixes it almost seems like coincidence now. I know facebook is free and all and we shouldn't ***** but those guys are getting rich and not really giving anything back. I mean come on? Don't you think somebody that works for them uses android app and can see it sucks?

AT&T Busted me for tethering. Solution?

Is there any way for me to disguise my usage so they can not see that I'm tethering or am I busted and should give up?
Thanks!

Hard to do! The data usage patterns of a mobile device n that of a computer vary a lot. The bandwidth used within a period of time is a sure shot indicator of the same. Best would be to get a home internet.
It seems like they are wising up --- or determined some new way of detecting it. Give us more information.
I also tether a lot and now im concerned! I was just discussing this on the Captivate forum. Another user recently got caught: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269283

I am not sure if they do it off data usage or mac address. I know when I stream Siruis radio that is uses the same data that my laptop does. I have hit 5mb of usage in a month with I play about 6-7 hours of Siruis each day at work.

8GB this WEEK???? Give up and pay for tethering. There's no way you're going to be able to play that off as phone usage.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
AT&T has the ability to do deep packet inspection to determine what OS is sending the packets - there are some fingerprints they can use to tell that it isn't an Android device.
This is a resource-intensive process so they normally don't do it.
But if you use 8GB in a WEEK, you can be sure they're going to investigate if that usage actually came from just the phone.
So I should be OK tethering for my kids infuses when we are away from wifi?

Maybe. I haven't gotten a nastygram yet and I tether my tablet all the time, but that's it.
I'm responsible about data usage though - even with moderate tethering I've never gone more than 500-700 MB per month.
I haven't gotten anything yet either (knock on wood) but I did get one of those "you are in the top 5%" emails this month. So I will be watching my usage a lot more considering multiple, members on various forms here are recently reporting this from AT&T.

OMG. 8 gigs in a week. Lulz. How? No torrents on teathering. My 2 cents
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I know this seems like a joke, but really, switch to Sprint. Unlimited means UNLIMITED, on 3G or 4G (although you're much safer tethering on 4G since they don't give a damn how you use it). That, and we have the GSII.
All carriers have a teathering plan in the works, even sprint. Soon teathering will only work with the proper plan. People have taken this for granted and abused the unlimited data which was not designed for 8gb a week usage. I know that is extreme. Think about it. The unlimited was made when the average person had no idea a phone could do it. Hell I ran my whole shop off a teathered connection to my tilt when our internet went down. But that was rare. Now every kid in the world has a phone that can do it, do they use it responsibily? Nope they are streaming movies in class, music.....you get the point lol. I can't blame the carriers. As more and more people live their lives with their faces buried in a phone or tablet, the data network that runs these device will need to be changed from what we are used to. With the new system you will not be able to hide what device is using the connection. So now its time to man/woman up and either get home internet or pay for the teathering.
I got the email ....i dont tether.
I tethered 1 time last week to test functionality on gtgs new thrill rom....
Is there maybe an apn issue where they think i am tethering when i am not????
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Tethering a infuse thru a infuse would make it look as though I'm not tethering at all, no? No Pc or different operating system involved.

If you're stock, the Verizon SSO app is factory and likely not compromised. Antivirus scans will generally return a positive for apps that have interaction with your phone's system level, or that gather or store personal information and transmit it elsewhere. In this case, unless you downloaded apps from sources besides Google play, it's very likely a false positive. Verizon SSO (single sign on) is a factory app from your carrier designed to save your log in credentials for use in all of your installed Verizon apps.

Yeah. I remember that, that's why I said "very likely". What I was really getting at is that malware detection apps for mobiles, unlike those for pcs, aren't very sophisticated and often rely on shaky criteria to separate malicious apps from trustworthy ones. Any app downloaded really has the potential to be malicious. Best thing to do is try to stick with apps from top developers (and make sure that top app is theirs as there are imposter apps too) or with download counts in the tens of thousands, it's more likely that those apps have been closely scrutinized by Google and others as any potential malware would affect a larger number of users.
BTW: your screen name is Google_Nexus... So why not get a nexus and have the ICS/ JB you want that way? Not being belligerent, just asking is all. Slim chance of either release for this phone any time soon.

You can use one gmail for unlimited devices on androidlost
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2
Are you sure? If the other devices use a different gmail address you have to log in with that email. Atleast that is what I had to do.
Looking at the guide page confirms it uses whatever gmail address is on the phone. I used this for a while until I bought cerberus, dont get me wrong it is nice but IMO not the same or better. I suggest it to anybody that wants a free tracking app.
