AT&T: Do not leave the phone plugged in overnight. - HTC Inspire 4G

"Only charge for 3 hours, and leave it, or else it will overheat and destroy the GPS capabilities, among other things," ~when I was trying to replace my Inspire for broken GPS.
Keep in mind, this is the same person that told me there is no GPS chip inside the phone.
*EDIT*
I'm afraid some people think this is a serious advice.
While the context was serious (he was dead serious about this advice), the advice itself is bollocks. This thread was made to poke fun at the expense of AT&T technical employees.

I have read the entire manual for the phone. No where does it say; Only charge for 3 hours at a time.....
Call ATT and get a support person who isn't an idiot. It may take a few calls.....

As a matter of fact, I read the exact opposite in official HTC materials for this phone. It said that the phone has a smart overheat protection. For example, if you have the phone plugged in and are running GPS, streaming video, and other things, it'll scale the charging down when the phone gets too hot to keep it from overheating. I can't imagine a phone that can do that would have any trouble being plugged in overnight.
That, and I've never once picked up my phone first thing in the morning after being on the charger all night and went "Damn, that's hot!"

Well, I've heard that charging the phone while the battery is already at 100%...May decrease the overall life of the battery.
However, the idea of it over-heating in the middle of the night sounds too ridiculous.

I've never had a problem. My phone rarely ever gets hot.

I had my phone overheat so bad one time in the middle of the night it was rediculous. It was so hot that I thought forsure something was gonna break. It was on the charger btw. Don't know what caused it or how it happend. I'm glad I woke up in the middle of the night though.

Omg. Can anyone confirm this?

Guess I need to set my alarm for 2AM to take the phone off the charger now...

The "no-gps-chip/overheats-if-left-charging-overnight" genius at ATT needs a pink slip. Stat.

If you tie 500 of those phones after overcharging them, you can probably annihilate a whole city.
In all seriousness, this is stupid....i have left my phone charging 100000000000 times and nothing has happened. If that guy is all worried about that, tell him to get a wall charger and charge it there....that way his precious GPS won't get damaged.
Geesh.

hmmm.. aren't the phones on demo plugged in 24/7?

wow. how do you not leave your inspire in and charging overnight. what are you supposed to do, set an alarm every 3 hours or so to plug it in and charge it up? i thought i was done doing that when my daughter started sleeping through the night!
you should however see if you can fool this particular tech with one of the joke screen cracking applications.

It's funny you mention Japan and an Inspire 4G... a while back, someone posted about their inspire 4G having no service in Japan... Turns out the phone can't do squat in the land of the rising sun... no 2100 band to roam on.

few nights ago i was texting in bed with my phone on the chargers... i feel asleep and woke up the next morning and not only was it wrapped up in my blanket but was on the charger all night! the battery temp was 125°!! so i wrapped it in a paper towel and put in the freezer.
it cooled a few minutes later and was fine.
so i learned the hard way. thankfully no damage was done.. that i know of...
it also gets toasty when i play NOVA 2 with it on the charger.

[Q] Random Shut Downs, Only when plugged in

i have been getting some random shut downs but only when plugged in to a wall charger. at first i figured it was due to heat while being charged. but the phone could shut down while plugged into the wall at any given time no matter how much charge there is or how long it's been plugged. Last night I plugged it in before bed at 30% and today I woke up at 44% with the phone off. Sometimes it's minutes until it shuts down and sometimes it's hours. It's the same on any Rom/Kernel I tried. Thinking it may be a hardware issue. Any ideas? Thanks.

Happens to me too... I'm on stock though.
And is it me or does charging the phone off seem to be ineffective?

which makes me believe this is strictly hardware. its not really like the software related reboots of the past. too bad i can't get it to go while plugged into pc, otherwise i could check logs to see what was up. let me know if you can recreate like clockwork. thx
Its hardware trust me. I've had in total like 6 g2xs and this is the first I've had with the issue.. I also have another now.. Both have the same rom, baseband, kernel and apps. Yet my new one shuts down on the charger.... Its hardware for sure and a replacement is in route. No point trouble shooting its a bad phone.. Threes many good ones just be patient... Now to wait for replacement...
If your on your 6th G2x, did you have to pay the 20 dollar exchange fee or whatever it's called? It would get pretty expensive after your 3rd or so G2x.

no. Bought first one full price it had no issues but dust, return no fee, then I exchanged again from pixel, no fee. Thats 3. Then I sold it for a sensation. Had bad luck with the sensation so I sold traded it on CL for a G2x and cash. Well that g2x was awesome too. so thats 4. I then dropped that ***** hard and had to exchange for another no fee again because I paid 130 through asurion. Thats 5. that g2x is awesome too. Now on a new line of service I got a free g2x with a online deal, so theres 6. Thats the one Im on now and it sucks donkey doooo.
but ive had enough to know there are good ones with no issues. I knew this one was gonna have issues cause of the ratio of no issues vs hearing issues here. LoL time to hunt for the good one again. LOL then after this I got to get the other g2x replaced again cause it was dropped again, and I cant have that. So Asurion that will be.....
Wow. Asurion must love you! LOL!
Last time I gave T-Mobile support a call, they wanted 20 bucks.
But that's a lot of G2x's my friend. And how much cash did you add on top to get the Sensation?

Oh and only 270 for sensation used upgrade.
This sounds like a defective battery. If your phone was plugged in at 30%, then you slept all night and woke up to a 44% charge with the phone powered down, that means that the battery was not taking any incoming charge for the vast majority of the night, nor does it seem that the battery was powering the phone for the majority of the night. Charging from 30->100% should only take 2.5 hours or so - maybe 3.
It could be that when you plug it in, it heats up - and thus expands. This could cause a loose connection to the battery somewhere (maybe something as simple as the physical contacts for the battery, or could be something more intricate inside the phone).
As much as you don't want to hear it, i'd say you'll probably need to take it to a store or send it in for replacement.

Thats my thought. It's still plugged in but does not charge. Forgot to mention that it requires a battery pull to restart. So possibly the phone is not really off, just in a non responsive idle state. Im going back to stock for now to see if that changes anything. I know they will ask if I got the update so I might as well. Thanks for the info.

Half the time its off, and half in a non responsive idle state. Cause sometimes you can turn the phone on, and sometimes you need a battery pull and the ***** is hhhhhhoooottt.
I doubt theres a loose connection when it expands as the copper connections in the corner are pretty lines up and expanding would only make em touch more you would think.

Sensation went for a swim! Now it thinks its charging

Ok so my Sensation went for a bit of a swim yesterday at around 10am. So I put the phone in rice imediatly (after pulling the battery ect) and left it in the rice till a bout an hour ago. The phone turns on works great can call text surf the web the whole nine yards. BUUT it thinks its charging...24/7!!! Weirdest part is it'll go up in battery life!!!! It's gone from 93 to 99% already.
I tried a different battery and that worked for like 5 minutes before it started to act dumb again thinking its charging. Is there anything I can do for this? Tried whiping battery stats no luck with that. Other then that I'm outta ideas!
Haha! That's great. Never need a charger again! But is there any downsides to it thinking its charging like battery dying fast or anything?

I would stop using device in that condition. You HAVE to wash device and dry it well. Even for day or two. If state is continued as described, go to service.
Hope it all goes back as before.

Yeah it is dieing faster, it lost about 10% in 30 minutes. I put it back in rice but I am contimplaiting the while taking it apart and cleaning it thing. Though considering I work for T-Mobile I'm elidgable for a discount on a new phone and I'm thinking about an amaze. But I feel like if I buy an Amaze there is going to be something new in a few months so idk. Plus there is no Core Droid on the Amaze :/ What do you think guys?

I reaaaaaaaaally don't like samsung phones lol. Just dont care for them at all really. I like the Prime cuz of ICS but thats the only draw. Plus the Nexus line isn't a phone that T-Mobile sells at retail locations so I wouldn't be able to use my employee discount on it :/
I put it in rice again and it seems to have made things worse. I now have weird marks under the screen that look like powdery, guessing rice dust. And it still thinks its charging. Thinking of investing in one of those 20 dollar CPR kits from radioshack that say they are able to fix any wet phone. But I doubt itll pull out those marks from the dust.
Should I dip it in alcohol then throw it in one of those?

[Q] My phone was burning hot last night while charging

I put my phone to charge last night at 11 pm and i left it near my pillow, than at around 3 am i woke up and touched my phone and it felt like it was burning, it felt like a stove not just a little hot, i could barely hold it because my hands were burning, i unplugged it and put it on the floor and took out the battery and left it there until 8 and now im afraid to charge it, i wonder why it overheated while charging :/ what should i do now call T-Mobile and ask for a replacement G2X?

Either your hands are the most sensitive to mankind or you are exaggerating or your phone is toasted. I suggest rebooting the phone after you plug it in to charge. Something I usually do and never have an issue with overheating.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Give T-mobile a call and get a replacement (If they will even allow it) If not get another battery. Friend of mine who talked me into getting this phone had that same problem. He had 2 batteries and 1 would overheat and get hot. once he changed to the other, things worked fine. But with all the problems that I have read that some others have with this phone, it wouldn't surprise me if you had some kind of hardware failure.
Though I have yet to see a problem with this phone. So..
Happened to me before.
This has happened to me with every single custom roms I have run on the phone. If I use either the stock 2.3.3 gingerbread rom or lotherius' tsugi rom based on stock 2.3.4 then this doesn't seem to happen.
im gonna call them and get a replacement plus my g2x has very bad screen bleeding all 4 corners and in the middle - right of the screen it looks horrible :/
it happened again, it shuts off when its charging and it gets really hot to the point where i have to unplug it and leave the battery out of the phone for a few minutes to let it cool down

Stories like this come up every time a new phone is released.
Could be defective units or defective users.
Abu Dhabi-based Sarah Shurrab, probably forced it into a 220.
Isolated incident.
Name says it all.
It happened to my ex-gf with her LG Optimus S a year or so ago. Caught fire, burned her bed all the way down to the mattress. She got real lucky that she woke up when it happened, it could have been very bad. A few android sites actually ran her story. Nothing ever came from it, of course. I had to fight with Sprint for weeks just to get them to replace her phone.

Happens with many electronics. I've seen bad AC Cords melt and laptop power jacks break and short and cause similar damage and smoke, as well as regular desktop power supplies. You will always get a few defects.
There was another story... can't find it saw it in the last day or two.. where a buy got burns on his leg from having his S4 in his pocket. I remember seeing things like this pop up way back in iPhone 3G days where it burned some guys jeans and stuff. Electronics are prone to having defects. There will always be a few. Expecting it and protecting or minimizing damage is the key.
That being said thats why I leave all my devices that I have charging over night on my nightstand next to my bed, away from anything else usually, so if anything does happen I'm right there and hopefully would be knocked out of my hibernation cycle and smell smoke. I will always unplug chargers if im going to be gone for more than 15-20 minutes as well.
I take these precautions before I had a very very close encounter with a cheap reading lamp over my bed once that decided to randomly spark for a few seconds and produce a small bit of smoke directly over my head a few years ago before tripping the circuit breaker while I fell asleep with the light on. (AC cord was red hot as well) Needless to say, I had a unpleasant awakening. Circuit breaker might have saved my life. Never want to have to wake up to something like that again.
I am definitely going to try to make that a habit as well.

A warning to all

So I put my phone on charge last night and woke up to this. Bare in mind I only sleep 4-5 hours a night so it wasn't on charge THAT long. The phone was off when I picked it up and would turn on, a quick flash of the I9505 screen and then straight off again. There was a minimal scorch mark on my brand new sofa, luckily it's a dark color so it's barely visible. I'm very VERY glad my sofa and or house didn't burn down while I was asleep.
It is currently being investigated by my carrier and Samsung. I used the original battery and charger + cable. I hope they will replace it as it is still under warranty and my second fault with this phone. The previous fault was due to the bad batch of batteries, the expanded battery problem which was also potentially dangerous.
As a warning again to all. Don't leave your phone on charge and out of sight for long periods of time. I was lucky, maybe someone elses sofa and house could have caught fire.
Stay safe

The same happened to me after 8 months with original charger and battery but my warranty was already lost because i've changed the glass of the display. First the battery got a bump after 6 months of use, changed with original one and then this. Suck a bad hardware. My luck was that the charging module and the antena were not so expensive and easy to change by myself.
Well that's a scary picture.Especially since it's a Samsung charger and cable. I assumed it was a random charger.
Try reporting the problem to HTC:
HTC gives away the One M8 for free to the owner of a burnt Galaxy S4
That possibility is always there, but if it were a real problem with that, sure we all should know of it.

Oh no, it's with Samsung already, yeah? You better hope they don't find out that it is Rooted, they will milk that part as they will say it was running unofficial software. With Root access they could mention the fact that you have control of the hardware and may have tampered with something in the SW that controls e.g. power management.
Keep us posted on what happens.

Under the pillow, during charge???!!!
Leave a phone under the pillow is not recommendable at all, but do it while charging is the perfect recipe for disaster!
Heat generated by the charging process
+ Heat an warm of human body
+ Non-ventilation due to the pillow

= Nothing good [emoji15]
If you do that, then it's a miracle that you still have your phone alive.

This.
Even though it's a small risk to start a fire, it's a big risk that the device will overheat and fry itself internally. Not with flames and sparks, but just with general expansion due to heat that exceed the physical limits of the tiny delicate components. It just takes one solder joint to work loose or one little capacitor to defect and the whole thing stops working.
I learned this lesson in 1997 when I put my PlayStation on the carpet. Burned it out because it couldn't ventilate properly.
My i9505 also has started to heat up very much when charging.
Before it was not even warm when charging and not in use. Now it is quite hot durning charge and really hot when in use when charger is connected. Before... um.. nothing. It just started without a reason.
Using stock battery, cable, charger and custom rooted ROM. But it started to heat even when it was not rooted or flashed.
Also PLEASE DO NOT TRY CODE *#0228# BECAUSE IT MESSED UP MY BATTERY AND NOW I AM GETTING RANDOM REBOOTS EVEN ON STOCK!

Check serial number on battery. If it starts with BD there is a good chance you have a faulty battery like I did. Had random restarts, battery % changing etc and the battery ended up swelling up. Quite dangerous and very important that you stop using it.
