So I put my phone on charge last night and woke up to this. Bare in mind I only sleep 4-5 hours a night so it wasn't on charge THAT long. The phone was off when I picked it up and would turn on, a quick flash of the I9505 screen and then straight off again. There was a minimal scorch mark on my brand new sofa, luckily it's a dark color so it's barely visible. I'm very VERY glad my sofa and or house didn't burn down while I was asleep.
It is currently being investigated by my carrier and Samsung. I used the original battery and charger + cable. I hope they will replace it as it is still under warranty and my second fault with this phone. The previous fault was due to the bad batch of batteries, the expanded battery problem which was also potentially dangerous.
As a warning again to all. Don't leave your phone on charge and out of sight for long periods of time. I was lucky, maybe someone elses sofa and house could have caught fire.

The same happened to me after 8 months with original charger and battery but my warranty was already lost because i've changed the glass of the display. First the battery got a bump after 6 months of use, changed with original one and then this. Suck a bad hardware. My luck was that the charging module and the antena were not so expensive and easy to change by myself.
Well that's a scary picture.Especially since it's a Samsung charger and cable. I assumed it was a random charger.
Try reporting the problem to HTC:
HTC gives away the One M8 for free to the owner of a burnt Galaxy S4
That possibility is always there, but if it were a real problem with that, sure we all should know of it.
How many SGS4 are been charged during every night across the world?
Your battery was faulty, that's all.
May I just ask:
Were you rooted? Any mods?
Did you have a protective cover or case on the phone? What brand was it?
What was the last app you installed?

Rooted stock ROM. Official Samsung S4 flip case. Maybe grenify? Definitely not something that would mes with the charging procedure.

Oh no, it's with Samsung already, yeah? You better hope they don't find out that it is Rooted, they will milk that part as they will say it was running unofficial software. With Root access they could mention the fact that you have control of the hardware and may have tampered with something in the SW that controls e.g. power management.
Keep us posted on what happens.

Under the pillow, during charge???!!!
Leave a phone under the pillow is not recommendable at all, but do it while charging is the perfect recipe for disaster!
Heat generated by the charging process
+ Heat an warm of human body
+ Non-ventilation due to the pillow
-----------------------------------
= Nothing good [emoji15]
If you do that, then it's a miracle that you still have your phone alive.

This.
Even though it's a small risk to start a fire, it's a big risk that the device will overheat and fry itself internally. Not with flames and sparks, but just with general expansion due to heat that exceed the physical limits of the tiny delicate components. It just takes one solder joint to work loose or one little capacitor to defect and the whole thing stops working.
I learned this lesson in 1997 when I put my PlayStation on the carpet. Burned it out because it couldn't ventilate properly.
My i9505 also has started to heat up very much when charging.
Before it was not even warm when charging and not in use. Now it is quite hot durning charge and really hot when in use when charger is connected. Before... um.. nothing. It just started without a reason.
Using stock battery, cable, charger and custom rooted ROM. But it started to heat even when it was not rooted or flashed.
Also PLEASE DO NOT TRY CODE *#0228# BECAUSE IT MESSED UP MY BATTERY AND NOW I AM GETTING RANDOM REBOOTS EVEN ON STOCK!

Check serial number on battery. If it starts with BD there is a good chance you have a faulty battery like I did. Had random restarts, battery % changing etc and the battery ended up swelling up. Quite dangerous and very important that you stop using it.

The battery is not swelled. I think that code really messes things up.
I sleep with my phone charging every night! I guess I need to stop that for sure :/
You're both lucky and unlucky with this one! Lucky because your house didn't burn down unlucky because I leave my phone plugged in over night all the time! I hope your phone gets fixed soon!

My XDA II suddenly decided to think it's always charging, EVEN when it's not in the cardle. I don't know why. The upper right corner is always yellow (not flashing). The backlight brightness can only be controlled by the 'On Power' slider. Simply, it thinks it is in the cradle. No matter how I try, be it soft or hard reset, it's the same. In this siutaution, the battery drains VERY VERY QUICKLY.
In fact, this is the 3rd time I experience this. For the previous 2 occasions, I send it back to service centre and they change a new unit for me under warranty. But it's just 5 months and it has already happened for 3 times! It's hassle and I am thinking what I can do after warranty period.
Am I being alone and anyone else has experienced the same situation? Any means I can solve it by myself? Thanks a lot.
I have same help me now
I think this is from using the cradle, for some reason it distorts the pins in the phone and causes a short between pins. I found that using a usb cable makes this less likely to happen.
hm
this is happening to me too
i had to buy a new xda 2 .... i still have the old one , if anyone knows how to fix this i would apreciate it very much. ...
it is the same story, the led is always on, it always says charning even when is not... and the battery only stays charged for 3-4 hours.
I´ve the same problem since yesterday with my T-Mobile MDA², it´s Rom Version: 1.72.01GER (6 months in use without problems), Rom Date 03/16/04, Radio 1.17.00, Protocol 1337.28, ExtRom 1.72.170
The yellow light is always on and the batterie runs very fast out of energy (1-2 hours) and it´s always says charging and think it´s connected to AC power...
Possible fix to "always charging" problem
 I got the same problem yesterday but I think I fixed it. (long rant)
By coincidence I was just finishing up after an upgrade to WM5 with Ramdisk when it happened. Of cource I suspected the upgrade to be the problem.
However, I remembered that I had gotten some snow onto the PDA exiting my car some hours previously, and started to suspect that this had created a short in the system somewhere.
Looking into the charge plug hole I could see that half og the bottom of the hole was covered with some light gray stuff. I used a thoothpick to gently scrape on it and lo and behold a big (relatively) wad of pocket lint came out. It had obviously become wet from the snow and created a short.
Everything works just like normal now. Charge stays fine (especially with my new 1700mAh eBay battery, recomended)
I have not had the problem return after the "fix". Fingers crossed.
I don't think everyone has exactly the same problem but I suspect it is caused by a slight short in the plug area in most cases.
Good luck!
In relation to this, when I sync my XDA II to my PC via the cradle, the phone automatically charges (even without the power supply). Is there a way to disable this charging feature? Cause the battery life will be shortened if charging happens when the battery is not drained first.
Thanks

My 2i does this as well, from what I have read this will not damage the battery. LiOn batteries prefer to be recharged before they get fully drained, in fact they like to be topped up rather then ran flat then fully charged. This is only going by what I have read on the internet, but it was on several differnt sites so I have no reason to think the info is duff.
Tx a lot for the confortable info.
@threadstarter:
the warranty should begin again if you receive a new device!
the warranty is on the device, not on the contract you have!
if you continue that way you should have a new one every half year ;-)

Hi everyone.
Last night I went to bed and as usual I check my Nexus S battery.
It indicated me very low battery, and turn it off.
So far, no problem, i thought, well there isn't enough battery to turn on the phone. I connected the cellphone to the wall charger and went to sleep.
Today i woke up and try it to turn it on, the screens just flashes and nothing happens.... Removed battery, try it again, the same.
Try 100 times that, and there was one time a Warning of Bootloader came up. Don't know what i did different thought, but now i can't get the same result.
Actually now the screen doesn't even flashes when i press the power button.
The battery seems to be charged, i tested with a LED. My wall charger is also working cause it's able to charge my old phone.
And now to get things even worse, as i bought it in asia, i don't have warranty, and the gran finale, Nexus S is not been sold in Brazil due to some regulatory issues, so Samsung said it they can't help me with an imported product.
The Cellphone is brand new, doesn't have not even ONE month of use.
It's not rotted, and it was in the latest android firm.
Does anyone have any idea what can i do????
The phone doesn't respond to anything .
Tnks a lot in advance.

good luck!

PROBLEM SOOOOOOOOOOOLVED!!!
The problem was that there was a little tiny piece of plastic dirt in the usb male plug in the phone! And that piece was able to make a faulty contact with the charger, the phone battery was dead as hell.
Can you believe that?????
I almost sent my phone across the world in order to use the warranty.
Now I'm back with my cellphone up , happy as hell!
Tnks a lot, and remenber to always clean everything before use more drastic measures.

Just received my inexpensive amazon wireless charger today (March 8th), shipped on the 27th, so shipping was pretty quick. Cost $29.98 after shipping.
Like the amazon reviews mention, it does beep, but only when the phone is placed on it and not when it is taken off, it also isn't very loud or annoying either.
It looks great and feels solid, it senses the phone right away even with my case, and seems to charge quite quickly.
Overall it seems to be a great alternative to the official orb, especially for Canadians who can't get it yet.
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00B7TBX36/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
EDIT: Ended up opening it up and disconnecting the speaker, it really wasn't that annoying but I noticed the tone it made was "inconsistent", turns out the ground wire for the speaker was barely hanging on, so i just ripped the speaker off and now it's all good
PROS:
-From about 60% to fully charged took about an hour and 15 min, so it seems to be on par with other wireless chargers (2-3 hrs full charge)
-Doesn't seem to stop charging once it hits 100%, judging by the battery profile it looks like it falls down to 95% then starts charging again over and over
-LED turns red so you know it's done charging
CONS:
-Poor soldering on speaker, but i imagine most people would remove it anyway
-Charging LED is a soft blue kinda like the nexus notification light, but it is somewhat bright at night, but again a modification could fix that too.
Go for it if you don't mind opening it up to fix those 2 issues.
Hm, that's good that the charger senses the phone right away. Keep us updated on how this charger is working out, I'm planning to order one this weekend. Hopefully all is good. I will probably end up opening up the charger and removing/desoldering the speaker.

No problem, also there's 4 screws to open it under the little foam pad "feet" on the bottom of it.
Weak that there's no Prime option.
Does this continue to work after a few days? I picked the small, flat charger from Fasttech, and it does not work very well. It will charge the phone fine initially, but refuses to charge the next time I place the phone on the charger until I power cycle it. Kind of defeats the purpose of not messing with wires if I have to unplug/plug in the charger every time I want to use it.
The board looks similar on this charger, although it is different enough that I don't think they are using the same components. Just wanted to see if you've had any issues with it.

I just got it yesterday so I guess we'll see, I've set the phone down on it many times since it arrived and haven't had an issue yet.
do NOT buy this piece of crap.
I bought one about 1 month ago, so many things are wrong with it.
for most it stopped working after a week.
the surface isnt completely flat and has a very slight arc to it. so the N4 will easily slide off on its own.
you will have to hit a "sweetspot" for it to sense your phone. it's very frustrating to have to look for it.
Annoying sound and more annoying lights, especially at night. they are INCREDIBLY bright.
do yourself a favor and buy google's original.

I don't know what arc you're talking about, the sides curves down slightly around the perimeter about 1 cm in, but the surface is totally flat. I don't see how it could possibly slide off, unless the surface your's sits on isn't level.
And expecting any inductive charger to work without lining up the coils is kind of unrealistic. You can't just causally throw your phone onto the pad and expect a solid connection, it's physics.
Placing the phone somewhat centered on the pad (as I expect most people would) works out fine.
As for the sound and lights...well I already covered that, its an easy fix.
wtf ,it does NOT work with the TCP gel case on, i had to take it off? anyone get it to work with a backing/case on?
before it works, the nex4 screen has to be ON for it to work right? that kind of sucks, no wonder this thing is cheap! 30+ tx bucks from amazon.ca
another thing is its gotta be put on the pad 'centered' you can't just be off center
giving this a 3/10 , don't recammend it, man the beeps are loud!
holy cow, this thing really HEATS up while charging, doesn't HEAT kill your battery? it was 40c the battery temp, in 2hours my charge only went up 30% from around 40% to 70%, im not using this charger, i think it will kill your battery faster with all that heat
I purchased the same charger, but contrary to your post mine will charge to 100% then the led turns red and won't charge again until picked up and put back on the charger. I'm curious if a different kernel or rom can affect this behavior. I'm on cm10.1 latest nightly. I'm in the process of returning it, but like everything else besides not maintaining a charge.

Im currently using the ringke fusion case which is probably the thickest there is, i've also switched to my mercury TPU case and they both work, I also don't need to have the screen on for it to start charging either, maybe the manufacturer made a revised version or something.
On the idea of a revised version. Here is a picture of my charger including the model number. It is T-100. I'm very curious if your charger has a different model number.
I am also thinking about ordering this as it seems very cheap for the price. My one concern is does it keep the phone topped up you said it does but there seem to be conflicting reports on amazon as well.
Led/speaker are no issue as they can be easily fixed however waking up with less than a full charge would be annoying.

when the screen is OFF, and you place it on the charger pad, the screen turns on automatically right? is that normal for every android phone?
also the blue led light is very dim, and its 'behind' the white plastic casing inside, i can't hardly see it, its all blurred/low lighting, mine is the same pic as above t-100 model
Hey everyone,
I wish I wasn't here under these circumstances, but yesterday my phone got drenched by the faucet when I accidentally dropped it in the sink. I turned it off right away and tried to dry it by blowing out all the holes/buttons/etc. with canned air. then (maybe stupidly) I turned the phone back on and used it the rest of the day, not really noticing that it wasn't charging when I plugged it in until later when the battery got very low and I plugged it in again and noticed that the charging symbol didn't appear.
Ultimately, what I found DID work, (at least temporarily, sometimes it still stops charging) was turning the phone off, then plugging it in, then turning it back on . When I did this, usb (and wireless) charging work, as well as the USB connection for getting files off the phone on my computer.
It's a bit odd that this is what worked, but so far, it seems to. I'm just not quite sure if there's anything else I can do other than maybe send the phone to LG for repair, or find a local shop that might be cheaper...
Just looking for any suggestions or information anyone may have to help me fix this. thanks in advance!

Try to remove the back and battery and place it in a bowl of uncooked rice asap for 2-3 days, this will limit the damage. Your warranty will also be voided i`am afraid as the moisture indicators are colored now.

what do you think the chances of the moisture indicators NOT being colored would be?
I had the phone inside a bumper case which covers the sides of the phone and the back. Some water got inside the case, but maybe not enough to wet the indicators.. I'd hate to open the phone and then realize they weren't colored. I hate opening phones if possible, but that'd be the only way to know for sure , I guess...
I'm working on getting my hands on a back up phone to use currently , but I hate to see the condition of this one get worse... (my nexus 4 that I was going to use as a backup hasn't wanted to power on in a couple months after I botched Rom flashing attempt and subsequent failure to accept a charge)

Water goes through the tiniest cracks and openings so i guess the indicators are colored. Only one sure way to find out and that is looking inside the phone. Look on YouTube for a Nexus 5 iFixit dissasembly video.
Opening up the phone doesn't really void the warranty. Breaking something while opening it does. You still had the headphone jack and the usb port open right? That means water got in and tripped the sensors. This is pretty much guaranteed. IMO, those sensors are too sensitive. Just using the phone in a humid place (bathroom while shower is running) trips them.
If everything works fine just try a wireless charger

The fact that your charging doesn't work reliably anymore probably means the moisture indicators would be coloured... I've had phones where the water didn't damage it at all and they still were

Hi,
On Tuesday night i spilled some water on my s6 during my sleep (ffs) and it was beeping and vibrating all night long. it wouldnt charge, wouldnt turn on without restarting etc. I then put it in rice for 48 hours and it seemed to work fine. unfortunately this morning my phones battery started acting up, jumping from 60% to 90% in a matter of minutes and other random jumps, especially when i restart it.
it now will not reach 100% when charging.
This could also be the result of me flashing a zip which promised to fix the deep sleep bug..
what should i do? ive tried factory reset and battery calibration etc.
on extrolite rom.
thanks.
think my battery is just completely f****d now, doesnt even last 30mins from 50%
Try re-flashing your firmware via Odin, just to be sure that it's not a software issue.
I doubt that a small spill would cause this, check out YouTube on the s6 and waterproof testing (although I know this is extreme and not at all supported by Samsung and should not at all be attempted)
is there any vapor on your screen or camera ?
try another charger
I don't know if ADH is offered on your device in your country but where I live Samsung cover 2 incidents, either broken glass or water damage. Look into this before fiddling with the device.

Thats what i thought. There was vapour on the camera, but its now gone since i left it in rice.
im trying another charger now, good idea.
Being in the U.K it is not covered by ADH, but i do have geeksquad.
so far with the new charger it seems to be more consistant; could it be that the fast charger was putting to much voltage in? it seemed to charge to around 80% really quickly then would drain (whilst charging) back down to about 30%.
Now it is slowly climbing in the 70%s, much more normal.

Vapor in the camera is a 100% indication that your device is compromised and your best action from here would be to stop wasting time and get it replaced via what ever insurance you have on the device.
I'm quite sad to hear that a simple spill on this phone caused a failure. expected a bit more splash proof despite it not being rated.

Yep its a shame because apart from this battery issue the device is completely faultless, even the speakers sound clear and as new.
Also will not connect to my pc as a usb device, so there's definitely something wrong.. Im disappointed
to be honest, i watched the videos on how waterproof it was and i have no idea how a tiny amount of water reached so far into the device.
Looks like i'll have to pay around £100 to fix it.
Thanks

Being on charge and getting wet is never a good combination.

yep, it really wont charge above around 70% now,
i dont think insurance will even cover it because the damage is minor..
