Really liking my new TF but does anyone else think that the charging connector is a bit delicate? If this breaks there is NO other way to charge the unit (I don't have a dock yet).
Why didn't they use a mini/micro usb? ALL my phones have these and I can interchange chargers...also if they had used a standard connector, I could have a charger at home, one at work, one in the car...
I must order a spare now...

It seems pretty resistant to abuse. I've abused mine a lot (being squashed inbetween furniture, being banged, being slammed) and no damage at all yet.
Seems sturdy enough to me...
Sturdy is fine. What happens if you lose it?
I'm generally very kind to my gear (my two year old car still smells new, says my coworkers!), and it doesn't take a lot of effort to be gentle, but I still worry about single-point-of-failure situations like the cable and charger. Especially since spares are pretty much not yet available.
I'm just hoping my good luck with not losing or breaking **** holds out!

Then you haven't seen the XOOM charger... It's a metal pin, about 1.5 mm thick and not even inserting all the way. The ASUS connector seems just fine. Plus, a very similar connector has been used in Apple products for years and they kept it

I asked Asus via email a few days ago regarding replacement chargers, the response i got i have pasted below for you -
"At the moment they (adapters) are not available yet.
Kind regards,

I was hoping for an ETA being given, but looks like they dont know when they will be available, or they are just not saying.

pictures are out, I'm pretty sure there is even a page up somewhere where you can pre-order them or atleast get auto notifcation for when they get released.
I think it is sturdy enough unless youre going out of your way to abuse it just like any other device
The sturdiness doesn't bother me, it's the ridiculously short length of the cable. I can't even charge it on my desk, I have to set it on a shelf out of sight to charge. Hopefully my second stab at a USB 3 extension cable will charge it.

Mostly because those cables can't carry enough power to do the job with these larger batteries. Hell, the TF can't charge on USB unless the screen is off. That shows how much power it needs.
I'd heard some people mention that they had been getting little electric shocks from the TF while plugged in. I experienced this a few minutes ago with the TF plugged into my dock which was plugged into the charger. I think I found out why...
I got my multimeter out and connected the negative to my house's ground. Then I held the other probe to the shield on the HDMI connector on the TF. This should be chassis ground, the same ground you come into contact with when you touch any of the metal. I measured about 62V between what should be about neutral potential and earth. This is the voltage you feel, since 62V is above the breakdown voltage of skin. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be much current since people aren't getting knocked on their asses.
I also noticed that the plug isn't polarized, so I turned it around and did the same check. Only about 5V this time, safe and consistent with what I'd expect between neutral and ground. When plugged in like this, the wide side (neutral) on mine is on the same edge of the adapter as the "S" in ASUS right above the USB connector.
ASUS should be able to fix this with a modified USA plug adapter that has a polarized (wider neutral) prong. For now, even if you're not getting shocked, plug the adapter in with the "S" lining up with the wider prong on the outlet. That is, if you're plugging it into a standard 3-prong with the round ground prong facing towards the floor, plug it in so that the "ASUS" on the end is upside-down.
pix below.
Interesting finding. We should get this on the issue list for Asus to take a look at.
Interesting. Thanks for finding this. It sounds like the power supplies should be recalled or at least a polarized plug sent to all US owners before someone gets hurt. I hope someone at Asus is listening.
One question though. Shouldn't the difference between ground and the neutral be zero?

Not zero, but probably less than 5V. The same circuit measures about 700mV between neutral and ground. I don't know what it means, but at least it isn't a shock.
Mine actually melted. I bought a new one. A dynex ultimate charger dx-ua. Its 11 volts / 1.5 amp. It charges great and no more problems

This would explain why sometimes I feel the tingling and other times I don't - probably based on the way I have it plugged in.
@D_Czap - Melting is a pretty scary and dangerous possibility...wonder if they're going to issue a recall.
Interesting find! Were you able to take a measurement with the charger plugged into the keyboard, and the tablet charging from the keyboard?

If it melted, it was a fire hazard. Be sure to let Asus know!
I noticed the tingling the other day!

thanks for OP, we can now avoid the tingling by plugging the ac adapter upside down, or in other words with the "S" in the word "ASUS" logo on the side of the longer slot.

Thanks to the OP for reporting this issue. I suspect, though, that the problem goes deeper than just a question of polarization of the AC wall connection.
I would expect complete isolation between the AC input and the DC output to the TF. The presence of a measurable AC voltage between those points implies to me that there is some leakage current between the primary and secondary leads of the transformer in the power supply. That just should not be happening.
I suggest that you do a resistance check between the AC connectors (not plugged into the wall, of course) and the chassis ground of the TF when the charger is plugged into the TF. Any resistance reading lower than open would indicate a path for current, and a potentially hazardous condition.
There is another thread on this forum reporting a problem that ASUS is aware of with one model (0B-LF) of the chargers, but I don't know what the problem is, and perhaps this is it.
It would be helpful for anyone experiencing even a mild shock, to check the model number, and post that fact and the charger model number on this thread.
I'm due to get my TF tomorrow, and that's the first thing I will be checking.
As a possibly related aside, I think that Asus is shipping the adapter disassembled for a reason. I think that they got UL approval on the adapter alone, and not the assembled unit. That's easier for manufactures to do these days, just one thing to get approved. That's why they can't ship with the AC portion attached. On the down side, it might mean that the adapter was never tested by UL with the AC prongs attached.
Here is a pic of my adapter with a melted prong, Kind of scary.
After some tests, I am finding that the adapter is marginal at best and should probably not be used to charge the TF mated with the KBD especially when both batteries are low. I have had good results charging separately and in stages stopping when the adapter gets hot. I would not let my combo sit on charge overnight( unattended). I am guessing that ASUS bought the charger from a supplier and that the capacities are overstated making the demand on it too much.

wtf...
tablet wasnt charging. The charger was plugged into the outlet with the usb cable connected.
i noticed my tablet was dead and when i go to charge it, i feel the cable is hot..
then notice rubber/plastic casing that covers the pin connection, is melted.

not sure where to see the model number. i just smelled it and its not good... fawk
I wonder if they got the same company as apple to make the proprietry cables lmao

Contact ASUS, send them pics. Do Not send them the unit yet. If they don't replace it immediately, send it to UL Labs.
Asus tech support have the tendency to not think at all and just declare your warranty voided because the outside is melted or whatever. They always claim it's a sign you tamper with it.

With the history ASUS has with AC power adapters we all need to keep a watchful eye on our adapters. It appears they maybe under built. Meaning the components used in their construction are not big enough to handle the load.
Maybe we need to follow DEVCAKE's thread and build an AC adapter?

By the way my adapter died yesterday.
I've never noticed anything with my TF's charger (I just worry about the cable getting damaged at the docking connector), but now that you metion that...did notice that my Eee PC's charger always did get awefully hot at the brick :-S
So i called yesterday after i got lost in that crap website. most links would end up dead.
The rep gave me an RMA number and emailed me instructions.
I sent them an email with the pic. THanks for the suggestion. Hopefully i can get something resolved.
For now...i cant even charge the damn thing.
I know this is almost a month old since the last post, but curious to know, did they give you any push back or require the old 1 back?
Same here. My Asus charger is very very hot. I need to emphasize the very because its really very hot.
These chargers are very cheap. Running hot is a known issue and if it quits working put it in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer for 30 minutes. Sounds stupid but it will reset the overload switch in the charger. I've done it. I also don't keep my tab on the charger all the time.

I had to do something like this with my ASUS netbook. It had an indicator light on it that would randomly stop working because it got too hot. Had to unplug it for up to an hour to get it to work again. On that note anyone know of any third party transformer chargers that work better/less hot?

Did you include the socket adapter (UK/usa/europe plugs)? Or just the bare adapter...
Have to send it in as well (getting it picked up tomorrow) and wondering whether or not to include the plugs/adapter.
i love how asus charges $50 for this overheqting piece of **** charger. if they are going to pull an Apple on pricing then the quality better be top notch
Mine died to (I don't really know from what but i'm guessing from overheating or some low quality issue), and I found a perfectly fine 12v output AC adaptater with USB port for 10$ in a supermarket. It's a little heavier but have a much longer cable and doesn't threaten to burn my house during the night.
But loosing the USB cable itself must be anoying.
Hi all,
I owned the Asus TF101 for more than 1 year (warranty expired).
And now my pad cannot charge anymore. I sent to the service, and they talked that mainboard need to be replaced :crying:
But, it still works fine, just cannot charge. I think the charger is broken and bought a chinese charger, but it can only charge a little (20-30%), then stop charging.
Do you think the mainboard is dead? I can believe i that.
Does anyone have this problem and how to fix?
Thanks.

You say you bought a Chinese charger, if by this you mean you bought at USB charger, it will work but very slow and only with tablet off. The TF101 needs 15V on the charge pin to work and the stock charger provides that when pin 7 is grounded by the tab. When pin 7 is not grounded, it provides standard 5V and will not charge well. Try several things. Put stock charger in plastic bag then in freezer for a few hours in case you tripped the over current protection. Take it out and let it warm up in bag then try charging. If that does not work, you can try get a Dynex video camera charger. It has various levels of output voltage on a usb connector. Set voltage top 11V and you should be OK. The TF uses a physical USB connector, HOWEVER the voltages in the connector as well as other signals ARE NOT USB compliant. This means a standard USB charger WILL NOT WORK.

No, I bought a charger like this:
http://www.amazon.com/POWER-ADAPTER-TRAVEL-CHARGER-TRANSFORMER/dp/B007LI1UOE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351734650&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+transformer+charger
Output: 15V, 1200mA
But, at the first time, my pad can charge up to 50% and then stop (not charge when shutdown also)
And now, it will not charge anymore, when I plug the charger, it's only charged 1 or 2 minutes and then stop.
I tried put the original charger to the freezer many time, but not fixed.
Try a factory data reset in the Android settings menu. If that doesn't work, see if you're power adapter can be taken apart (most can to handle international plugs). If so, clean all the metal points where the wall plug contacts the power transformer.

I had the same problem and found a solution:
It's not the cable, but the 2 pins inside the USB opening at the charger!
If you look inside at the top you will find two pins that suppose to fit in the two holes from the USB connector.
By pulling them in and out, these pins move up slowly until they dont fit in the holes anymore.
Grab a little screwdriver and move the pins a little bit back out by sticking the screwdriver behind them.
Reattach the USB cable...you'll be surprised!
A buddy @work bought a used TF101 so cheap ($179, B60 a few months back from Cowboom). It came looking great but just won't charge (is it why it was cheap ?). We tried the freezer trick, that didn't work. The cable was fine hooking up to the PC and would charge slowly from there ----> Finally the cause: it's the cable itself. I gave the man my spare cable (bought @amazon, 2 for $5).
Hic,
I borrow a new charger from my friend, and still not work. I tried reset many time, but nothing happened.
I think there is problem with the main or the charge port connector.....
Maybe I will try to open it. Mainboard replacement take about 200$ (from ASUS service), and I think buy a new one is better. Say goodbye to ASUS.

Sometimes the problem is less complicated than you might think
For greater clarity it's the two outside pins on the row of 4
Does not work for me - also the freezer thing...
My problem is irritating: Yesterday the Charger did not work at all. Then after many attempts to fix it (like freezer,...) I just put it into an Apple wallcharger - did not work either but then I used the Asus Charger and it worked.

The reason other chargers (like Apple) do not work is that they only output 5 VDC. The Asus wall wart outputs 15 VDC when an Eee Pad is detected, otherwise it puts out 5 VDC.
It could be a bad cord that one of the contacts is loose and it sometimes does not detect the Eee Pad.

Many users who have let their dock get to 0% have had this issue. There is a toggle switch in the dock that changes state when you get to 0% and does not always switch back when you charge it again. You can try opening the dock and changing the state of this switch and then it should charge after that.
Why it was designed this way, I have no idea.

There's also a user that reported a "known bug" about it here, saying he was going to RMA it. Supposedly some docks are missing a part to make allow recharge at 0%. I can't confirm or deny it.
I'm having the same problem with my charger right now, it will only trickle charge from the ASUS provided adapter while the unit is off, and when the unit is on, it recognizes that it's plugged in to the charger, but does not charge for some strange reason. Is there a possibility that this is a hardware problem within the tablet? or is this a charger related problem?

Gonna answer this in a few days.
As you can see up on the page Ive got this ***** issue. I bought a new original asus charger for around 35 bucks, it will come the next days. Then I can tell you whether it is a problem with the charger - or not.
A fix which worked for me (for about 75%):
Connect the TF to a Apple wallcharger (so it should charge - doesnt do it at all - everythings good). Wait like 10 minutes then you can reconnect it to the Asus charger. If this doesnt help: Strech the cable a bit while "charging".
I had the same issue when I bought my "charge cable" come to find out it didn't work because it was more of a sync so it would mainly sync to PC or device it was connected to then I leave it plugged in over 24hrs and maybe get about 52% of charge ... I bought a charger from Amazon works like a charm and really cheap

I've heard that it's better to NOT buy this charger because the voltage makes the touch digitizer screwy, and can cause battery damage in the long run.

surprisingly enough this fixed my charging problem as well. At first I couldn't identify these two pins that you mentioned but for anyone else having the same issue I had. looking at the charging port on the TF with touchscreen facing up and back of the TF down the pin is not on the middle bar with the multiple connectors but it's it's attach to the top part of the port as illustrated by the tilda in my badly drawn diagram below and dashes representing the middle connector bar

Until yesterday, my TF700 was working perfectly fine, but now I'm concerned as the battery in both the dock and the tablet have stopped working.
The AC adaptor's connected to the dock and I always charged both the tablet and the dock together for the most part.
I went to check the device this morning and suddenly found that they're not working at all.
Yesterday evening, I tried switching on the tablet and it would switch on and reach the ASUS screen, but not fully boot up.
I bought it from Amazon's Amazon Warehouse division and I have until the 31st to return this, but in the meantime, I'd like to know why the batteries have died on me suddenly and is there anything I can do about it.

If it's a genuine hardware failure, you'd have to return -- unless you're very proficient at handling and replacing sensitive electronics yourself (microwelding, for example).
It has been reported before, and could be fixe din almost every case by letting the 700 be dead for at least an hour, and then let it fully charge while off (!) -- just let it sit hoked up to the wall charger for at least 8 hours. Then try to turn it on again.
Good luck.

I'll give that advice of yours a try especially as I don't want to have to return it if it's something that can be easily sorted out.

It never hurts trying -- you aren't exactly the first to describe this, but luckily, pretty much all of the others were saved.
I finally managed to get the problem sorted out as it seems that the connection to the port on the keyboard had somehow come a bit loose without me noticing it.
Unfortunately, I have a new problem in that the cable itself seems to have died in that it won't work any more with the adapter as it started crackling a bit when I knocked the connector attached to the AC adaptor itself gently by accident. :crying:

Well, I hope I am right in assuming this is not your luckiest week, huh? Is the cable damaged near the wall charging part? (That's what I understand.) The replacement cables probably are not that expensive, so I'd plonk down on a new one instead of initiating "daredevil repair mode".
Saying that gives me that MacGyver feeling. Duct tape and a pair of scissors would be all that he needs to fix this.
Oh, and maybe a pair of toothpicks and an old sock, just for looks.

The cable itself is fine (it's not worn down to the wire literally like a lot of cables and AC adapters you get for devices like iPods and Galaxy S II's), it's just that it has this weird burnt-like smell at the end connector that plus into the USB socket on the AC adaptor.
As for replacement cables, I'm surprised that they're not that easy to buy offline.

Agreed -- buying them offline is a definite hassle. I have seen them online, though, and you can even hunt down the charger parts or the TF101 and TF201 Prime. They will work flawlessly.
BTW and FWIW (gotta love acronyms), my charging cable smells a bit funny at the end too. This specific one has to put through a lot of power, so I'm not even that surprised.

LOL!
In all seriousness though, I love my TF700, it's just a shame that it's such a pain in the ass (not literally!) to buy official accessories in the shops and it's not as if you can buy a USB cable for it in the shops unlike ones for the iPod, iPad and iPhone.

No, it's a definite PITA
-- I had hoped that the new EU rulings concerning all smartphones needing to provide a microUSB charging input would extend to tablts, but so far this has not been the case, unfortunately.

I risked saying that the tip of my ... smells funny on the interwebz and came away with it! </increased self-esteem>
LOL!
Just giving you guys a update concerning my device: It seems now that both batteries don't want to work any more for some reason or other as of yesterday. I've checked both the official USB cable and a third-party cable plugged into the official USB plug and they're not charging up the device at all.
The tablet can connect to my laptop as a media device without any problems, but I'm confused as to why it's not working at all when plugged into a USB adapter.
In any case, I'm going to order a AC adapter from eBay later today and see if that works or not.
