[Q] Plz help I'm new to android....

I'm sorry if i'm reposting the same thing and i do know that a lot of ppl are getting yelled at for this but I'm really ignorant about this android operating system... i don't know what it is... i don't know what rooting is... or whats the difference between froyo and eclair... Like I've mentioned earlier i don't know anything about this except for the fact that i just bought a new Samsung galaxy S captivate... If anyone can help plz do cause i am lost to no end... Thank you very much...
Rooting gives you administrative control over your phone and allows you to flash custom versions of Android. It basically allows you to have much more control over what you can do on your phone. Froyo, Eclair, etc are the names given to different versions of Android. Eclair is 2.1, Froyo 2.2, and Gingerbread 2.3.
Ohhh... well i think i i root my phone and is currently running eclair but i am trying to run froyo on it... how can i get there.... i'v dont some research on this forum and YouTube lol but the links they give me all came back as dead links... and installing froyo with cognitive is very confusing because the package that i have to install is a lot more than the elair... am i stating this correctly or am i just lost period... LOl thank you for your reply..
stay at version 2.1 eclair and get darkys v9.0.2 the best by far, its a custom rom and is amazingly fast. its easier todo if your on 2.1. so uprgrade to darkys rom. type in darkys rom. and itt has full instructions for noobs
i think the main reason for me to update is because i want to run skype... other then that i love eclair... i don't mind it at all... but for some reason skype only works on 2.2 firmware...
Im new to android too ... I just got my htc legend. The problem is i believe its under "vodafone" branding because everytime i switch my phone on the vodafone logo shows up. So the first i want to do is to remove this ... Can you please help me put here ?
hahha ive just sent my back to the guy i bought it off as mine was unlocked but vodafone branded. i hate it wen they do this. sometimes they even put vodafone stickers on the fone, its so annoying. am not entirerly sure to be fair. maybe reflash the phone . not sure mate
^ Oh man.... i completely new to this ! How can i tell if my phone is in unlocked condition or not ?
And how do i reflash it?
'you're in the right place, give it a couple of weeks and in no time you will be rooting ROMing and modifying like a pro. take it from me who knew nothing about the Android OS and now I'm up there.

I read somewhere in the rules for xda, you should search before posting question
Anyhow, this is a starting point. I don't have the Captivate but I am sure there are many more topics about your phone.

Hello and welcome to XDA...
First, I recommend reading the stickies posted in the forum and learning as much as you can about the inner-workings of the community... from there, things get easier.
Points of advice...
- Flashing Roms and Kernels can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be... meaning, if you search the forum well and learn what you're doing, it becomes as simple as ever...
- Never flash anything without making a nandroid backup first... if you don't know what that means, use the search function for XDA and lookup "nandroid"
Lastly,
Most people are going to recommend you flash yourself Cyanogenmod 7. The latest stable build is RC1 and can be found here and other "usual places".
Once you flash CM7 (a "rom") then you can flash a Kernel if you want... I'd be willing to put my neck out and say that faux has the most reliable and most popular Kernel out right now in conjunction with CM7...
The best thing you can do for yourself is read... take the time to read as much as you can and answer your own questions slowly over time... there is no reason to go flashing away until you fully understand what it is that you are doing.
Hope that gets you started in the right direction... good luck and have fun!

here you go mate: http://www.and-developers.com/sbf:defy
hope this will help you find what you need...if you don't mind losing ability to go back to froyo or bright buttons you might also consider flashing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385868 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140839
cheers
If you want less blur apps try blur based rom's like motoginger II:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389726
If you want NO blur go for CM7
You can always use baseband switcher if data doesn't work.
But why post this in dev section???
THANK YOU!
Hi there thanks so much for the quick replies. Sorry for posting in the wrong section. I panicked and thought this would be the best place as it has to do with roms. Typical noob I am. Please if admin could relocate this post to the correct section that would be great. Ended up fixing my mates phone before he realised what happened. Note to self: do not assume that if it works on defy it will also work on defy+; research first don't know what I would do without the xda site/forum. Saved me on many occasions.

Motorola Defy Help!

*Don't respond with comments saying read this or that...
I have read the guides for moto defy mb525 U.S. tmobile and yet i don't understand a thing. I have a bionic and have rooted/flashed/sbf'd before so I have experience but not with this device. I tried understanding from the wiki and beginners guide yet it didn't help me at all. (I'm dumb)
MY Goal: Jellybean CM10 on my Defy
I am currently on froyo 2.2 and I don't understand how to get CM10
I have an original tmobile u.s. defy (I think its green lens since i got it on day one but i cant tell since the lens is black and really has no color.)
If someone can provide links I can learn:
What should I SBF to?
What should I use to root?
How do I flash cm9 kernel (I heard its the only way to get the CM10 working on a tmobile mb525)
Once I get a recovery I know how to flash and stuff I just want to be guided until I get to clockwork recovery and have the cm9 kernel flashed.
Please help, don't flame....its what makes this community great

You don't need to change your SBF. SBF is a factory image, and you are looking for custom software.

[Q] How to port Gingerbread?

I have an old Lg c550 Optimus Chat, it's running froyo 2.2.2, no one built a custom gingerbread rom for it so i would like to give it a try. Can anyone give me advices about what to do? Is it there a guide for dummys? I'm not a coder but if it's not too hard i can try to do it. Please help me out
P.s.: I was thinking to modify a p350 or a p500 Gingerbread but i don't know what to do

Well,I don't say it will work but it's pretty tough.Porting different android versions requires great knowledge and compiling also. But,while building a rom for a specific device is more secure than porting as we never know it will boot or not. But,you may try. But,I nor xda is responsible for any problems to device. You should make a backup and have all recovery tools with you,to ensure that your device didn't get brick.
replace ram disk
Modify updater scripts
Chown and chmod lines modification
init.rc editing
Rom patching

Well,Let me clarify one thing. All are noobs in starting. When we start to try things ,we gain knowledge. When I join Xda I didn't knew any thing rather than rooting.I thought that if I know rooting fully,I will be a great dev.(Told u I was a NOOB).Then,I to become popular I posted screenshots of a build.prop edit with written 4.1.1
and told I ported jelly bean. Some people told me -Wow,you are a genious dude.I felt very good hearing appreciation from them. Then, they asked me link for his.I made excuses day after day.then, one day the moderator posted a reply which changed me.So,That's why I started to gain knowledge about all this.

Search for custom ROM which is made for your device.Try CyanogenMod or even search on this forum. My Samsung S+ was running on Gingerbread and now i rooted it with 4.4.2 and it really makes it faster and smoother. But try rooting along side a experience guy else it will brick your device

I searched evrywhere for a custom rom but no luck, cyanogen mod doesn't support my phone, the only thing i was able to do it was root it with gingerbreak 1.2.
So no one can be my obi one kenoby? First of all i would need a clock work mod recovery right? There isn't one for this phone so how can i do it? Is it hard to build?
