Motorola Defy Help! - General Questions and Answers

*Don't respond with comments saying read this or that...
I have read the guides for moto defy mb525 U.S. tmobile and yet i don't understand a thing. I have a bionic and have rooted/flashed/sbf'd before so I have experience but not with this device. I tried understanding from the wiki and beginners guide yet it didn't help me at all. (I'm dumb)
MY Goal: Jellybean CM10 on my Defy
I am currently on froyo 2.2 and I don't understand how to get CM10
I have an original tmobile u.s. defy (I think its green lens since i got it on day one but i cant tell since the lens is black and really has no color.)
If someone can provide links I can learn:
What should I SBF to?
What should I use to root?
How do I flash cm9 kernel (I heard its the only way to get the CM10 working on a tmobile mb525)
Once I get a recovery I know how to flash and stuff I just want to be guided until I get to clockwork recovery and have the cm9 kernel flashed.
Please help, don't flame....its what makes this community great

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
You don't need to change your SBF. SBF is a factory image, and you are looking for custom software.

Milestone: Froyo possible?

Since we have no Milestone Subforum I post here.
Is it possible to create a Froyo ROM for the Milestone from unofficial channels - or is it impossible since the boot loader is not hacked?
Highly doubtful since there's no kernel source available for the motorola milestone but mssmision has successfully ported Cyanogen 5.7 to the milestone so it "could" be possible using the same technic he used.
edit: Your posting in the wrong section of the forums, Xda has a "answer and question" forum area for query's like these.

^ that is incorrect. The Kernel Source is available. The only reason that there hasn't been any Custom ROM development is the bootloader which is locked and checks for ROM signature before flashing and therefore, makes any Custom ROM flashing with the traditional method impossible.

would it be possible for someone to port the stock nexus version of froyo to the milestone?
What about the bootloader of the Droid? Since the Droid is an US version of the Milestone and vice versa?
In this thread:
http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-hacking-modding-fuer-motorola-milestone/28729-custom-rom-project.html
Mssmison says about the Milestone:
Coming from an windows mobile device that we ported Android too, I was sure that not having bootloader access wouldn't restrict 3rd party roms. So as proof of concept I've put together a port of CM mod's latest 5.07.
It's currently 'in progress' and I'm looking for someone to help me finish it up.

I belive if we can get any custom rom on the Milestone it would pave the road for a Froyo-rom in the future.

You think idk about the lock't bootloader withing the milestone...lol, btw nice copy paste, google is your best friend, i dint mention the lock't bootloader cause its been proven Dext3r that rom cooking for the milestone is very possible, and mssmison has alredy ported the latest Cyanogen rom, few things arent working properly BUT its a FACT that ROM COOKING is VERY POSSIBLE for the motorola milestone.

Hopefully Motorola will come up with a 2.2 update for the Milestone. It is their #1 phone at this point and it seems highly improbable that they will not get us FroYo.
they already said that it is coming i say in the next two weeks we get it or a port of it.
check my post and get app2sd workin on ur milestone telus included http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=692367
I do not understand the comment about Custom ROM flashing being impossible.
I have a Milestone running a custom 2.1 ROM, using the procedure at droidforums.net/forum/motorola-milestone/31296-how-get-2-1-your-milestone.html.
The only requirement is that you start with a rooted 2.0.1, which was possible several months ago.

Relax. This is not world of warcraft. I only corrected what you said. No need to start a flame war.
Now the bootloader has been cracked I would expect a port fairly soon!!!

awesome news maybe now we will get a sub forum milestone +1
Awesome, that much closer to 2.2?
Cool. Anyone tried it yet?

To clarify:
1) The nandroid backup you loaded onto your Milestone, I guarantee you, is of someone's stock Motorola ROM with root and mods. The ROM is not custom in the sense that anyone actually rewrote and recompiled it.
2) There is no need to have a rooted 2.0.1 to accomplish what you did. All you need is to flash the rootable recovery SBF to whichever stock ROM is currently on the phone (2.0.1, 2.1, any locale), and then you can apply the update.zip which loads ADBRecovery and makes nandroid backup/restores possible.
AFAIK the kexec attack does not mean that the bootloader is hacked.
But it is possibly a way around the bootloader using the existing android to kickstart the installation of another ROM.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're very right. kexec is a way around the locked bootloader that shows promise but is still far from workable.

CyanogenMod Rom

Hi,
Is there any person or developer who can port CyanogenMod Rom on our Defy?
Or do you guys have any idea regarding this? How can we attract the attention to any developers towards our Defy?
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/screenshots
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/
CyanogenMod Rom works on Droid. So That should work on our Defy as well.
Looking forward to hear your ideas guys......
We need a recovery first
How can we get that recovery?
Wait for it to be sorted - it will come, just got to be patient
What does it really mean that we need recovery and why? Please explain in a way that a noob can get it.or diect me to a place to read thanks!
Bcs recovery is needed to get the modded ROM onto the DEFY!
You need to replace/modify allot of things and this is not as easy as getting a non market app onto your mobile
And i guess there are much more people looking for a 2.2 or perhaps 2.3 then waitin for a CyanogenMod Rom!?

my main phone is a G2, and have yet to run a CM rom, I'm, more then happy with what we have so far for the Defy, and thanks everyone efforts, if someone ports an OEm Sense Rom over this way well that's another story lol
You know what I am with the guy above. Im loving what I got so far. And in the new year I will probably do my own custom rom. I am not in any rush to get 2.2 at the moment, and im getting an android tablet today so hack time is being diverted to that

Google, you need to be prepare to read - alot.
Everything I have learnt is from googling - all the various android forums.
Hi, i asked google a lot, but can´t find a realy gooo anser what excatly todo.
I can compile my own rom from source, but what is with driver?Firmware?
How i implement this?
Is the bootloader locked the same way as it is on milestone, droid x and droid 2? Or is it hack friendly and we can load any custom kernel?
I missed this thread before.
I would love to see CM's rom on the Defy. In fact I would have no problem donating to the individual who makes it happen
no way!
No one wants to hack the defy!
Would easy i guess for a realy hacker.
But no one do it.
All want to give motorola devices back or won´t buy it.

And ofcourse, if you find yourself in any situation where your phone might get wet or dropped, there's no point in comparing them.
Until froyo(kernel) is released by motorola, we can "only" have a CM5 port for the defy.
It would be great trying froyo kernel without any modules and having them replaced by DEFY ones... Doing that we would know if motorola uses the same key for all the androids

Need your Help/Advise on ROM Change

Hello to All,
I recently have 2units of Motorola Motoroi XT720 and I can't even identify it 100%
Since it has Korean markings below the battery and has a "T" symbol upfront, then i seem to believe its a Motoroi.
Anyways, I'd like to change the ROM of this back to stock 2.2..., however, I don't even know if the current ROM is 2.2?, I have searched the net info about KyuHyuk ROM but the sites are Korean and google can't translate it.
here is some info about the phone that I have:
Model number
XT720
S/W version
KyuHyuk ROM for XT720 1.5.0
Firmware version
2.1-update1
Firmware configuration version
GAS_ASIA_SHOTSKT_P006
Baseband configuration version
USASHKSTAB1P2XAPCNSKT03C.0R
Build number
LeeKyuHyuk Build
Kernel version
2.6.29-omap1
H/W Version
umts_sholes
My Question(s) / Needing Help/Advise:
1. Is this ROM Android 2.2?
2. If I flash this to stock 2.2, will the stock 2.2 be much better than the current one that I have?
3. If the stock 2.2 is not that good enough, can someone point me to a fast/stable ROM that fits a Motoroi? or this KyuHyuk ROM is good enough?
Any Info/recommendations/suggestions is appreciated..., may it be good or bad.
thanks for reading my post
best regards,
dabiano

no, your rom is on android 2.1. im not sure about the performance of the roms because our phones here are milestone xt720's and not motorois. im not sure but ive heard somewhere that the stock 2.2 for motoroi is quite laggy. i only know about the milestone xt720 roms and not motorois so i cant help you with suggesting you a rom. the best bet is to stay on the stock rom as it should be almost bug-less.

Yeap, I've search them all here in this particular sub-forum and I still don't have sufficient info...
this is why I'm asking questions here because there are SOME people that owns a Motoroi and they may provide me advise/info.
If the Korean Motoroi sites were that readable and understandable..., I don't have to bother posting it here in the first place.
It's pretty hard to get info about Motoroi ROMs. I don't have an answer to your questions, but I don't think it's inappropriate to ask them here. Milestone XT720 and Motoroi XT720 are twins... mostly alike but with some subtle differences. It can be confusing sometimes when we don't know which phone is being discussed, but you were quite explicit about having a Motoroi.
Since you have a custom ROM loaded, you should learn all about recovery and nandroid. You will want to have copies of both the 2.1 and 2.2 Korean sbfs in your possession. I can upload them tomorrow.
Because of the locked bootloader, the odds are that at some point you will have to flash back to stock, get root and install the bootstrapped recovery and restore nandroids. Knowing how to do that is extremely important. I'm pretty sure the proceedure is the same on Motoroi, so you should be able to follow reverendkjr's videos etc.
So, since you've got a custom ROM, do you know if you also have the openrecovery bootstrap installed? You should be able to test that by holding volume up while powering on.
Regarding the stock Korean 2.2. I think it's pretty good when run on Milestone XT720. There are some small incompatibilities with sensors and such. The WanHu and XDAspecial ROMs are recent attempts to port the Korean 2.2 to Milestone XT720 that have been very well received. In any case, my expectation is that it would be a good upgrade from any 2.1 ROM.

Thanks for your reply, I hope I'm not that bothersome to the XT720 sub thread asking questions here
The reason why I'm asking is that I had once flashed a MyTouch 3G 1.2 [the 3.5mm version] knowing that I thought it was a 32A device and the 32B was that without the 3.5mm..., to make it short..., I bricked it because "MyTouch 3G 1.2" wasn't either a 32A or 32B
This time..., I need to be precise of what I need to do..., then I am now here asking

I think 'openrecovery' is not installed [Phone Off then pressed volume up plus power key]
Is "Android system recovery <2e>" the same as 'openrecovery'?
What I have is similar to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172495
Recovery (mostly quoted from someone else):
Turn off phone
Press Power key + Camera Mode Key to power on the phone and bring up the recovery screen
(Trianlge with exclamation mark shows after motorola logo)
Press Volume Up + Camera Key to show the recovery menu.
Use Volume Up/Down Key to highlight and Camera Mode Key to select
I can see from the screen is:
Android system recovery <2e>
Use Volume Up/Down to highlight; Camera_Mode key to select
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

Korean 2.2 : motoroi_sbf_STSKT_N_79.33.50R.zip : http://www.multiupload.com/P83XF77704

I've flashed the 50R on my Milestone XT720 before, but I've never flashed 39R. The Motorola bootloader does cryptographic signature checking of sbfs and will refuse to install damaged or modified ones. Frankly, it's pretty hard to brick these phones unless you try monkeying with the bootloader itself. The biggest stinker is the phone does extremely stupid things when the battery is low that will make you think you bricked the phone. I cannot stress how often the answer to bad flashes is to get the damn battery charged (apparently you can't rely on the phone to do it correctly) and then reflash the stock sbf or use Motorola recovery to do a factory reset. I do a lot of flashing/etc and I found getting an external battery charger was very, very worth it for when the phone decides to be stupid.

No that's Motorola's recovery, OpenRecovery is different. We can't install custom recoveries on XT720 because Motorola does cryptographic signature verification of the recovery at boot. There's more on this by [mbm] here: http://blog.opticaldelusion.org/2010/08/clearly-you-have-no-idea-what-efuse-is.html (If you're on linux I am a big fan of sbf_flash also by [mbm])
As you're reading that, the thing to understand is that MilestoneXT720/MotoroiXT720 have the same security as DroidX, so the things he's discussing about Milestone having a vulnerable recovery do not apply ("Milestone" == "Milestone A853").
To enter openrecovery you have to hold volume up while it boots (i.e. press and hold it down until you see either the bootanimation or openrecovery menu).
thank you for such wonderful info ^_^

I now have updated my phone ^_^

=> installed OpenRecovery
=> applied Overclock to 1GHz @ 56vsel [still testing for stability and seems stable at the moment]

thank you all to those who helped me out ^_^
Hi...I'm Korean and I'm 17...
Kyuhyuk ROM is a ROM made by a Korean High school student named Lee Kyuhyuk. (I think it was 2011)
(He is now in university, his twitter account is @leekyuHyuk, website : http://kyuhyuk.kr/)
He made this ROM because Motoroi with stock rom is REALLY SLOW.
So he decided to customize the stcok ROM himself and he made a ROM called Kyuhyuk ROM.
If u have any questions, ask me at any time and I'll give u more infos about Kyuhyuk ROM and Lee Kyuhyuk!

If you want less blur apps try blur based rom's like motoginger II:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389726
If you want NO blur go for CM7
You can always use baseband switcher if data doesn't work.
But why post this in dev section???
THANK YOU!
Hi there thanks so much for the quick replies. Sorry for posting in the wrong section. I panicked and thought this would be the best place as it has to do with roms. Typical noob I am. Please if admin could relocate this post to the correct section that would be great. Ended up fixing my mates phone before he realised what happened. Note to self: do not assume that if it works on defy it will also work on defy+; research first don't know what I would do without the xda site/forum. Saved me on many occasions.

Best/Most Stable Rom?

Well I'm looking to root my wife's Droid Charge, I only have experience in rooting HTC phones, So I'm going to have another learning curve about rooting a Samsung phone. something about odin software
Im wondering if there are any dev's currently working on/tweaking there roms for this phone, or is the development of this phone is dead.
I would like to flash a rom that she can use as a DD. Has anyone ported a ICS rom to this phone where everything works as it should? Link would be cool.
Any tips or links to the latest rooting method for this would would be great. She did take all/any ota updates Verizon has sent out.
What a huge difference between her Droid Charge and my old Droid Incredible. Big mistake thinking the Droid line would not put out a product that was inferior to there older Droid Inc.
So I want to make the best of a disappointing situation. I know some Dev's can turn a turd into a golden nugget, so my fingers are crossed that there is a ROM out there that will make this phone work like It should have out of the box.
Thanks for any input/links you may have to help
No working ICS, no AOSP. The RIL is still not cracked on this phone after a year and a half. Tweaked is really the only game in town for roms. Not that it's a bad game...it's a very good rom, and customizable to an almost AOKP level.
Based on your sig, you'll have no issues rooting. It's way easier than the Rezound...the bootloader is completely unlocked and in the clear out of the box. It's literally just flash and go here. I'll try to scare up a step by step guide for you.

So I want to make the best of a disappointing situation. I know some Dev's can turn a turd into a golden nugget, so my fingers are crossed that there is a ROM out there that will make this phone work like It should have out of the box.
Thanks for any input/links you may have to help

look in the development section - there's only one custom ROM for FP5 (Tweaked 3.0), but it is really awesome! no fully working ICS (we doubt the charge will ever get it). however, there are some really neat themes (ICS, JB, etc styles) available - look in the themes section.
this device is really easy to root, and nearly impossible to brick.

Thanks Shrike!
That would be sweet. Thats why I love XDA, no matter what forum you are in theres always someone there to help
This is older, but it's a good step-by-step on Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
You'll only need to flash recovery in Odin...everything else can be done from recovery. Here's the newest recovery you'll need to flash in Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
The only other really important thing to know that may not be in those threads is that the stock rom overwrites recovery with stock on every boot. The easiest way around that is to just have the rom on your SD card before you start, then flash the recovery and boot straight into recovery (with VolUp+Home+Power) without booting the phone normally. When you flash Tweaked, it will stop the automatic recovery installation so CWM will stay.
Good Deal, Thanks Dude. I now have a little project for tonight or tomorrow:good:
