[Q] Does your TF have light bleed? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My TF suffers from some light bleed, it's more obvious in darker conditions as you'd expect, however it's more noticeable if I don't use the auto brightness setting. I have to say that I didn't see it at all in the first couple of days, I wonder if it develops with use?

i usually tend to leave the backseat modding to the proffesionals, but just for fun. did a bit of experiment. i went to the "new post" page, and typed in "light bleed" as the title of post, and what do you know, the forum recommended, 5 other threads about light bleed.

After a search there were 2 threads shown under this section of the forum, the 5 threads are not all TF related. Thanks for your help.
I suspect that there might be others that haven't responded to the other threads and a simple poll may get more results, I may be wrong though.

there is minor bleed on the bottom left..but it's ok and not noticeable unless you look for it in particular (dark environment, high brightness, black picture, etc) ..I can live with it..
you're lucky if your screen is perfect..ipad 2 is not immune to light bleed too..

[Q] Light Bleed?

I've seen some of you have said there is some 'bleeding of light' what does that mean actually? Are there holes in the casing or is it something with the screen? And how bad is it?
Edited to add: Despite the troll, a few people here have reported this problem first hand - however it appears to be small, so hopefully they got a rotten apple.
Having replaced my own LCD backlight, I can speak to it.
Basically the LED lamp sits on the very bottom of the tablet illuminating the tablet from the back (hence backlit), the light is supposed to be contained but sometimes the lamp housing may contain gaps and light will leak through those gaps. They appear as light flares across the above layers.
If you google Ipad 2 light leaks and view Images, you can see a great deal of reports with sample images of the symptom.
I'm not quite sure why companies don't just employ a rubber gasket or flap around the lamp housing to get a good light seal.

There was a comment on one of the android forums.
I noticed it when I first switched on my device, but it was late at night in a very dark room, and brightness was on full. I have brightness set to auto now, and I have never noticed this again.
I am very intolerant of defects such as this, so if I am not seeing it, it's fair to say there isn't a problem. Of course that's just my opinion, but I really don't think it is an issue.
Hold on a moment .......OK, I've just gone and stood in a dark room, and brought up the Gallery App, because it has a dark border. No backlight bleed obvious until I turned the brightness up to maximum, at which point there was a vague semi-circle of backlight just to the right of the keyboard dock. Turning the brightness down to a sensible level solved the problem.
Hope this reassures you. I should perhaps point out that I have no affiliation with Asus, or Google, and no vested interested in device sales.

It's pretty rare I think. I've only read it on a couple of occasions and as far as I know it's the only physical issue with the tablet. Everyone keeps raving about it's build quality. So, if there is any light leak in mine (when I eventually get it) I'm swapping it. Just another reason to try it in the store

I'm afraid I don't understand that - what LED lamp (singular)? I thought whole panel was made up of tons of small "lamps" lighting up?

The very first thread here, where people were asking for this forum to be made, there were a few people who said theirs had bleed (and a few others said the sound was uneven in playback, one side very loud the other low)
I haven't seen much, so perhaps its only a few unlucky people.

No, spare me your rolleyes crap. It was people saying: My device has this problem. And some saying I'm returning it.
I've been reading a ton of sites about this device, and may have gotten confused about which site i read it on, but clearly there is no mistake when people say they have the problem, so don't accuse people of lying.
It certainly is mentioned here http://android.modaco.com/content/asus-eee-pad-transformer-transformer-modaco-com/336683/eee-pad-transformers-owners-thread-14-04-2011-first-post-updated/
"I had started to noticed light on my screen that shouldn't be there. This obviously is a backlight bleeding problem. ... the manager then took a look in the dark and he noticed it and said it was a fault with the screen and I can get a replacement."
http://www.avforums.com/forums/14430336-post46.html
"Screen. Some light bleed unfortunately (this is also being reported by other users on XDA forums/Modaco etc) - not a deal breaker, but it is there.. admittedly only noticable when using at night... Still great images though. "
(So he's probably not returning it)

That's the way led technology works, but lcd (and i think ips) uses backlights.
I have a little bit of light bleed about 1.5" up on the right hand side of the screen... It's about the size of a 5p coin.
I'm not going to worry about getting anything done about it I don't think. I only notice in in the settings screen, and I'm rarely in there. When I'm in portrait mode, I just see it as a 'glow' on the taskbar.

Ah yes, you're right. Was thinking Flouro. In any case, light is leaking reflecting off small gaps from the edges and into the upper layers.
Have you ever tried to completely seal out all light out of a room? It is insanely difficult and amazing how much gets through.

Typicaly there are two light sources - at the bottom and at the top of the screen (or on the left and on the right - my LCD monitor has it that way). Sometimes there is only one source - on the bottom mostly.
I'm not sure about this but as far as I know LED backlight works the same way - it's only at the top or bottom in most displays. Some better LCD TVs with LED backlight have more LEDs behind the screen - but it's pricy to do so I doubt tablets will have it that way.
I have a reasonable amount of light bleed on my Transformer. Areas on the horizontal and vertical near the home button.
In addition, a couple of spots on the right hand side vertical.
No major drama, called Comet and they are sending me a replacement, though not until next Thursday when they predict they will have more stock, though given what I have been reading today on various sites, that date could slip a little. Doesn't matter though, my replacement request is logged and will happen when it happens.
On the down side, by the time I get a replacement I will have spent ages getting it just how I want it.
On the up side, I get to have all the fun of setting it up again.
On a side note, having cancelled a preorder for a Xoom through PCWorld and bought the Transformer, I finally got to play with the Xoom on the shelf today.
Definitely made the right decision.
The Transformer just feels better made, and despite the fact that the Xoom has excellent viewing angles, the screen is not a patch on the Transformer, oh, and did I mention the small fact of 100 quid!
The reason I started to asks about this is because I'm a bit skittish about light bleed, having once had a monitor and the store just thinking i was nuts "there is nothing wrong with this monitor its just you" - thanks a lot! Humpf.

[PSA] TF700T Light Leakage

No tablet I have had has had light leakage. Between myself and family members, I have had time with the Acer A500, the iPad 2, the iPad 3, the TF300, the TF700, and more, and not even to mention the number of phones and other electronics I have used. I have never had a device with light leakage until I purchased the TF700. I swapped a broken A500 for the TF300 (under the best buy protection plan) and used that for a bit, until I got the TF700T 64GB Gray Model and my wife took over the TF300 and got a dock for it. The first TF700 had light leakage, and it got worse over time, earlier tonight the Best Buy finally got some 32gb models in, and my wife swapped my TF700T out for me. The first exchanged model still had light leakage, and the second exchange model as well.
Ive spent the last day or so researching light leakage, particularly on the TF700T. While I am no stranger to light leakage, I wanted to see if there was anything unique or common about it with the TF700T. Below, I have included a graphic that I hope helps to sum up the culmination of my research.
Yes, I know there is at least one other post about this matter, but this post is more for information purposes and not query purposes.
If you have light leakage on your device, I encourage you to report it here, and report where on the device your light leakage is occurring. That was we can update the graphic as needed, and help keep this information post as information as possible.
Thank You.

Mine has it, but really only noticeable during start up. Not really a psa, known issue. No point for the thread

This may be just an isolated problem
I used to think that it was an isolated issue, until I started looking around, finding many reports for transformer models TF201 and TF700. Not to mention that in the images posted and the reports given, the leakage occurs at some of the same common locations.
I have had three of the TF700Ts that had light leakage. I would LOVE to find one that does not have light leakage, but it seems implausible. At this point, I may swap out for a galaxy note, but I do like the higher resolution.
Im glad to see that some people are not having this issue, but I wanted to post something for those that are, and to help consolidate the information that I found in many threads. I would like to hope that threads like this would be started for known issues, and not left to just random posts within random threads. Before I purchased my TF700T I would have LOVED it is someone posted more about known issues. Instead, all I read was great reviews, and now I am stuck going to and from the store trying to swap out my device for one that has no light leakage. Wasting gas and time and apparently annoying the hell out of the best buy employees.
It would definitely not help to describe what light leakage is...
Question: Is there any proper way to test for light bleed? I tried using the "Screen Test" app suggested in the graphic and my light bleed doesn't occur. However, I know I have a little during startup so I know it's there but it goes away so quickly I'm not able to get a good look as to the extent.
For those who want to complain about there even being a post with info on this matter, please feel free not to reply or comment. This post does not benefit from irrelevant and unhelpful replies. This post does not concern you. This post is for those of us who spent 400-600 bucks on a new tablet and have a "known issue" that should not be occurring on a 400-600 dollar device.
As for testing for light bleed. Keep in mind that light bleed is not an issue that will damage your device, but is more of a symptom of poor quality or potential other issues. However, minor light bleed is nothing to be concerned about. If you only notice it during boot, and no other time, than I would not be concerned with it. There are times that my light bleed is more prominent as well. Setting a black background and then checking it is also a good way to look at it. The best way is to get nothing but a black background, or as close to it as you can, and then being in as dark a room as possible.and turn brightness up as much as possible. This will help to clearly pinpoint bleed areas. Some people have also been known to use long exposure on a camera to capture the bleed.
For a little bleed, its really about how annoying it is and rather you care. However, too much light bleed, or bleed that is not around the edges, can be more indicative of a defective screen.
I also have light bleed in the same "Hotspots" that you've illustrated. Light bleed drives me nuts, but in this case, it's really only noticeable at boot-up when they set the brightness to full. It's not noticeable under normal use, unless you are *really* looking for and the brightness is set very high.
To be honest, if you don't notice it, there really is no need to "go looking for it" by turning up the brightness, sitting in a dark room with a black screen - who in the hell would normally do that!? Light bleed is a common issue on all sorts of devices and it is certainly not an Asus-only issue. Yes, even some the infamous iPads have light bleed.
Maybe you've been lucky as not *every* devices will have it, but the majority will have some amount of light bleed. As long as it doesn't bother you, don't worry about it! Obviously, if it's bad enough that you constantly see it (or it's in the middle of the screen or something like that, which is rare), then by all means exchange it, but I don't think we need to have everyone going through these stupid "try to find it" tests.

This is not meant as a witch hunt for light bleed. This is mainly to identify the details of the known issues, to inform the consumer. I never knew about this light bleed issue when I was reading reviews, but shortly after discovering the very noticeable light bleed issue on my device, I started seeing TONS of information coming from people having similar experiences.
The common issue with these posts has been the query as to whether this was normal or not? Should it be returned or exchanged? Why is it happening? Will it cause problems in the future? etc
I agree that we should not be sitting around trying to nitpick every pixel, but some people want to do that. It is up to the user. Not to mention that people should be aware of when there may be issues with their 400-600 dollar device. Though, part of the initial information was for people to understand that many of the devices suffer from some degree of light bleed. That way people are not freaking out, as I have been seeing them do on other posts and forums, when they see something small.
i have 2 infinities, i have one and my dad another, I have a very very tiny leak, maybe smaller then the size of the white part of your nail, its right above the bottom right corner and only visible at boot. My mom has an ipad that has much much more light bleed and my sister a toshiba thrive that seems to have bled out light everywhere. Toshiba is terrible, what a crappy tablet
Leakage as well.
I purchased a TF700 Grey 64GB from best buy. I had a LOT of bleed in mine. The lower left corner where the back and home buttons are was very bad. It was a large area about 2 x 2 inch triangle in that whole corner. There was 5 other quite noticable spots around the rest of the picture. 2 on top, one on the right and one on the bottom right corner (not nearly as bad as the lower left). So mine actually had a lot of bleed.
Now its wasnt overly noticeable in normal use, but when I fired up videos / movies and it got to darker scenes the lower left corner really stood out.
I just yesterday exchanged my TF700 for a TF300. The 300 has some very small bleed spots, but they arent nearly as bad as all the bleed I had on the 700. I did the exchange (party because of the bad bleed) and partly because I felt the 700 was fairly buggy in terms of software. Often sluggish on many apps. The 300 I feel is a better performer atm. Most apps run better / smoother for me. However I must admit that I do miss the higher resolution of the 700 screen. Oh almost forgot - a big deal was the battery life was terrible. Watching a video especially, even just browsing and jumping apps my battery drained FAST. I was only getting 4-5 hours. I did the full charge cycle as directed too.
My vote is that I like the performance of apps and general use better on the 300. However the extra res on the 700 was nice (minus the light bleed). Everyone says the software is supposed to get better, but the big problem is you never know just how long that can take. Can be anywhere from a month or two to six months to a year before the 700 will be fully optimized.
I feel very conflicted, lol. I want a 700, but the 300 is better atm.

Are all your purchases from the same store?
Personally I'd give up and buy something different.
I no longer have my TF700. Havent had it for a while. Have the note 10.1 now. Absolutely LOVE it. Had a little bit of mild light leakage on one or two models, but its great now. However, I figured I should post the response I got back from ASUS about light leakage. Took them a while, and it is pretty bland and what you would expect to receive back. .... so nothing too exciting.
Good morning Mr. {EDITED},
I do apologize for the condition you have seen, regarding our tablets. At times, there can be production shipments that do have the same issues, since they were all manufacturered at the same time, causing defects such as this, to be evident. I want to assure you that this isn't the overall quality of our products, and if this was to happen after purchase, it would be rectified via repair, or replacement, directly from us.

I have light bleed in the same locations as the OP pointed out. Its especially evident because its mostly along the Android black status bar on the bottom. Sometimes I find myself rotating my tablet 180 degrees just so that its not as visible.
There isn't an option for me.
I get really bad light bleed when I turn on my tablet sometimes.
Then it fades away in a few seconds. I don't mean that I get used to it, it legitimately fades away. I have no idea how this is even possible.

It's possible because during start-up the screen is at 100% brightness and then dims to what your settings are. Want to see it come back? Turn your brightness to 100%, hit the Super IPS button for good measure, and then go to your apps menu and look around the edges.

Definitely not.
This happens even when I set the brightness to a consistent level (no auto tuning). It happens no matter what brightness I set it to.
When I turn it on (from sleep mode), it has bad light bleed but then it fades away after leaving it on for about 20 seconds.
Just got mine in today. The initial boot showed what I would call some pretty significant leakage in the "hotspots" you showed, but once it got to the setup screen only one spot is barely noticeable. With the brightness almost halfway up it's still barely noticeable with normal use, is that considered "minor?" I haven't tried watching any videos yet so I don't know how annoying it will be with black bars at the bottom.
I'll try to take a picture of it, but so far I'm a bit relieved compared to what you first see when it boots up. That looked pretty bad.
EDIT: Here is a picture that doesn't necessarily even show what I see. The bleed in the upper left isn't near as bad as my eyes see, but the bottom is fairly close I think.

White strokes/lights in the edges

Had to use my transformer in the sun today and all went well. After arrviging at home I restarted the device and I saw overblown white lighting on the right left and top bottom side. Although you can only really see it with a dark background this thing is really annoying, I didn't do anything wrong like leaving my transformer in the sun or stuff like that.
So is this software or display related? If its the later I am going to return it to Asus and asking for a new display, because otherwhise I really love this beauty almost replaced my casual everyday work notebook.
How big and bright is it? If you're seeing it only on dark backgrounds, it sounds like it's light leak; which is pretty common on these types of LCD panels. I think the spot has always been there and now you notice it. Being out in the sun had nothing to do with it.
While light leakage is considered common, we can replace the panel under warranty if it's severe enough.

Thank you, I have tried to make a screenshot but it just doesn't show the lights, so I am going to try it using my handycam tomorrow, will update this thread then and post it here.
Yeh take a photo with a camera. A screen shot will not be able to show the light leak since it's the actual panel that's affected and not what's on the display.

S8+ AMOLED Display Quality (Red Tint Issue) - worse as previous Samsung devices

Hello fellow XDA members,
In the past I started some threads regarding Samsung AMOLED display quality, especially for the Note devices.
Please see here if you are interessted:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/note4-amoled-screen-quality-t2906365
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463786
Now, with the S8+ (and the S8, the problem is the same), even the media recognized the display problems, known as "red tint", just google for it!
Samsung tells the people that this is due to wrong settings, and/or the adaptive display setting turned on! THIS IS NOT THE CASE!!!
I got 2 pieces of S8+ today, and both displays are not OK. One screen has the red tint issue, but only on the upper half of the screen.
The other device has no red tint, but is generally darker and looks more "washed out" and has a slight yellow tint.
So again the display lottery is back, it is only "luck of the draw" if you get a decent screen or not!!!
If you do not believe me just compare a few devices beneath each other with the exact same display settings. Turn adaptive display off, then go into the dialer and type *#0*#, with this you ensure the brightness settings are the same and you have the same sceen content on both devices. You will notice that every single device has a different screen quality (tint, evenness, ...)
What do you say? Acceptable or not?
With all of us over at the tmobile shipping thread we've been waiting and crying and hoping that we get our devices early....and then when we finally got our devices ****ty things like red tint leaves a sour taste in our mouths..sad really, samsung already made this device feel rushed with all the Bixby and fingerprint scanner awkward positioning and what did we do after the note 7 debacle? We forgave these fools...and now this?....i do feel bad for those that actually paid full retail price for these expensive devices and to unbox and realize the screen is pink...that right there is not how to say forgive us for our mistakes instead a huge f u to all the customers who were unlucky enough to get such a horrible display color....but I will say I won the lottery because out of the box my s8plus came out nice no red pinkish tint whites are white...but why am I still pissed? Because my note 4 was the same whites were white and then after a year or so my eyes were fixed on a strange color that was taking up half of the screen that came out of nowhere...so yes I will be forever paranoid with sammys displays now....if my s8plus came in like that I don't think I would've came back....but then again I'm here lol
Settle down guys, this will likely be fixed with a future fw given the attention its gotten, this is pretty simple for samsung to fix actually, all samsung needs to do is what video games have been doing for years; offer the user an option to calibrate based a sample image. Once thats in, the presets can be established based off of those generated values from the user selection.
It seems like they will indeed need to implement a fix of this sorts, because it does seem the displays hue varys from device to device.
Anyways, for the most part, I hardly notice it and it seems even, and the more I look at it, the more i can't make sense out of it? Seems to play tricks on my eyes... lol.
Beautiful phone and display though!

Settle down guys, this will likely be fixed with a future fw given the attention its gotten, this is pretty simple for samsung to fix actually, all samsung needs to do is what video games have been doing for years, offer the user an option to calibrate based on a sample image provided, once thats in the presets can be established based off of those generated values.
It seems they will need to implement thia because the displays vary so from device to device.

This is a hardware problem, a real software fix IS NOT POSSIBLE!!!
Samsung can only try to cammo the problem with increasing the range of the color-sliders in the display settings, so that you can turn down red more then now. But this wont fix that the red tint is NOT EVEN ACROSS THE DISPLAY!!
What else proves that this is a hardware error is that if you put 5 devices next to each other (with the exact same settings), each of them will look different in regard to screen quality! Believe me, I know what I'm talking about, see my previous threads regarding that!
I agree that it should be even otherwise you may have a hardware problem but my concern is your criticism has more to do with amoled in gerneral and what we are observing is a consequence of the tech used. Samsung is also pushing the boundries here too with the display tech so the norms for amoled to compare to may not even apply anymore. And your comment to my comment regarding masking the problem, there is a reason why every display on the planet has picture settings.. right? No 2 displays are exactly the same...
I just went through the crap with my Surface Pro 4 too, trust me, they are a good example of no 2 displays alike, must have went though at least 11 Surface Pro 4 on my mission for perfection display and I had to give up in the end because truth is, its still an awesome device!
that happens when you get the early batches of s8+

Absolutely unacceptable reasoning. They shouldn't be putting out a product if the "early batches" are DEFECTIVE
Obviously it's a QC problem, which they seem to have some fairly big issues with, over and over.. They will lose customer faith if they keep doing this ****

Perhaps but then again why did you buy a phone from samsung in the first place?.....
I was in the Samsung store yesterday for the launch party. They had 3 S8+ on display next to eachother. Each was running the exact same retail mode, showing the exact same content at the exact same time.
One display was white, one was red hued, and one was pee yellow.
(No, it wasn't display calibration settings, I checked).
There are definitely quality control issues.

And which of the 3 do you have?
I noticed a slight pinkish tint when the shipping screen protector was on, but looks ok without it.
Something slightly different this year is there seems to be a pink tinge on all four sides of the display (top, bottom, left and right). It's a very consistent along the sides of the screen and very noticeable, a few people here have also noticed it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/red-tint-screen-t3592335
So it's not just another pink/yellow/blue/green spotty tinge problem, theres now uniformity with the example i've provided.
I've got the S8+ and the screen is not red at all. The left and right edges if anything have a slight blueish tone to them but I believe this to be the effect of the screen curving to the sides distorting the colour (Colour shift?).
Unless you have bought one and have the problem with it, you have no right to complain.

Mine had a very slight pink tinge when I got it, at the very top and bottom (maybe half the status bar thickness), and it's since gone way.
The over all display color was a little too warm for my liking, so I knocked the red slider down to half, and now it's fine.
Got me and the wife one yesterday from At&t. No red tint and best phone yet. I love it.
My display is freaking beautiful and I love the fingerprint location. I never had any trouble. My finger finds it very naturally

Acceptable or not?

im not tying to be a jerk but just curious what happens when you cycle the --blue light filter-- button in the pull down menu with the wifi, Airplane mode ect.
reason i ask my displays is perfect but with the blue light filter on which is to reduce eyestrain ..then the display is very red
Really did not know they had this till i play around with it

I have an S8+ as per my posts in the other thread, so I have a right to complain.
Firstly, it could well be fixed by software, even if its uneven, HTC had issues with the camera doing this a number of years ago (big red spot in all pictures). It was fixed with software
Secondly, it might disappear with time. AMOLED, OLED and other self lighting technologies (like Plasma in TVs) have a bed in time, where some colour ranges need to burn in. I would suggest a full red screen using a screen tester app for a few hours, to see if it beds in the red.
Guys, I would like to take this device, there is a possibility of having a faded display?

Pink tint/hue

I am wondering how are your units in regards to famous AMOLED pink shift?
Mine seems to be a bit more pink on the side making whites and darks looking uneven.
Looked at display units around shops and all units had it to some degree, also YouTube videos shows a pinkish screen nature.
How is your one?
To me pink shift implies that it turns pink when tilting the phone or viewing off angles. I don't have any problems with that however the regular OLED color uniformity is an issue on my device. Nearly ever OLED phone I've had has had some issue with this and I think some people are just more sensitive to it than others explaining why it's a non issue for most people and a huge issue for others. My Pixel 2 has a pink tink at the top 20% of the display which is minor and think most would either not notice or find acceptable. It bothers me a bit but it could be worse and I'm not sure I want to go through the trouble of RMAing the device until I get something better (OG Pixel took 3 tries and then I gave up and accepted the problem, but then my 3rd OG bricked itself and they sent me a 4th with a nearly perfect display yay!). Pink on the side or diagonally across the display is the worst I think as it's really noticeable when reading text on a white or grey background. At the top is the best case scenario for me as it's only really annoying when reading content in landscape orientation.
I spoke with a Google Tech at length today regarding the different color tints on our devices (mine is blue) and he assured me that the tinting was intended with the new screens. On a side note I notice while out in the sun when it's hard to see my screen, if I tilt slightly my device, the Blue tint actually helps me to see my screen better. Not sure if that was intended or not.....
