Which apps are ok to delete... - Captivate General

Just in case ya'll were wondering, the "shack" didn't question my "the computer shut down mid update" story. So i have the new captivate and I just rooted and 3e rovered and what not. Now, I w3ant to delete all the AT&T crapware/bloatware that came on this phone. I thought I saw a list a couple of days ago, but now I can't seem to find it. I've tried searching but to no avail. Does anyone have a comprehensive list of stock apps that are safe to delete from my Cappy?

Is that Captivate/AT&T specific or just android in general. Thanks for the fast response btw

If you use paid version of titanium backup you can freeze anything and defrost it immediately if it causes problems or defrost all in batch to return to stock. I have frozen everything on the phone whose name begins with at&t without a glitch and lots of other stuff as well.

[Q] I'm a first time smartphone owner trying to figure out where to start...?

I just got a Samsung Captivate and it's the first smart phone I've ever had. It's really a neat little device.
I'm well familiar with jailbreaking, computing, following instructions to perform basic hacks, and yes, even reading, but what I haven't been able to find is an ORDER to do things in.
- Should I root/do things to my phone now, or wait until 2.2? Are there any benefits or drawbacks either way?
- In what ORDER do I have to do things? I'm looking to root, get rid of AT&T bloatware, and start side loading apps.
- What are the essential fixes for the Captivate? Lag fix? GPS fix? I don't know what else there is...
Anyway, I'm really excited to start digging in to this stuff, just looking for some basic advice for a first time smart phone/android owner. Thanks in advance!
Well, you can find a plethora of very useful ROM packages on the Developers forum that will root your device and enable sideloading and most are running 2.2 already. I abandonded stock after 2 weeks of owning the phone, it is my first smartphone as well and I will not touch any OTA's from AT&T because they bricked a lot of phones with their first OTA. The developers have the system dumps as soon as they start to push them and they clean up the bloatware. Before you flash anything get the unlock codes, use an app called SGS unlock from the market and Android ID changer to get your uniquie number and write it down and don't loose it. Once you flash 2.2 leak your ID will not be the correct one. Also once you root, get ROM Manager (donate version) and Titanium Backup (donate version) you will not be able to live without them. Also the 2.2 leak fixed my GPS, it really works now. Also, very important before you flash anything make sure you have a phone that enters download mode and recovery mode using the three button combo or you will brick your phone, there is a batch of phones that can not enter download mode no matter what you do. Take out your battery and look below your IMEI number for the batch hopefully it isn't 1008 these phones do not go into download mode. If you have one of these go to AT&T and exchange it for a phone that is from a different batch and make sure you have the button combos working before starting to mod your phone.
Lastly welcome aboard and enjoy your phone
Thanks for the reply.
Luckily, it appears my phone is from batch 1010 (you had me scared there for a second!)
What are the odds that the leaked 2.2 is any different from the actual one when it comes out?
Edit pretty much already said
Leaked froyo will be slightly different it will more of the stuff native to android and the att one will have more of there stuff. The developers seem to find and fix the bugs fast.
Is there any possibility to updated to 2.2 even if the phone was produced in 1008 batch? Unfortunately, mine says 1008. I have rooted my phone and am able to sideload apps.
Please help
Thanks
There is a jig somewhere in the forum that is how to make a jig that forces download mode. I would make it or if you are not comfortable with that someone is selling it. Try it to make it sure it works. It really is only needed if there is problem. Which happens to all of us sometime. It will get you out of pretty much any jam. That is why its recommend.
ill give you 2 rules of thumb
1 if its fun do it
2 if it aint broken dotn fix it
your choice , I only obey rule #1 , and I take risk because its fun , android is fun ...
if all you need are fixes , welll your the one who should say where to start .. is your phone sluggish ? do you feel lag ? does your gps lock in timely manner ? thats how it goes ... like I said me I mod just to mod ( many of us do ) ..
The main things I'm looking to do are:
- Remove AT&T bloatware
- Sideload custom apps
- Make it look awesome
- Install helpful stuff for battery life / gps / lag / etc.
That said...
I have successfully rooted my phone, and I'm now figuring out my next steps.
Hey all. I just bought a used (but in great condition) captivate off of ebay. Unfortunately it is of the #1008 batch.
I did test the 3 button and 2 button + usb modes and they both work.
Does this mean I will be fine putting a new rom on, or will this #1008 problem present itself somewhere down the road?
Last time I put an alternate ROM on a phone was way back on a Tmobile SDA, and hopefully it will be soon when I do my next one
Thanks

Rom Manager or a nandroid backup is a complete system image. It's useful to get back a full rom state if you have any troubles. Saves some time from having to rebuild from scratch.
Titanium Backup is used to save and easily restore third party apps. If you are flashing a new rom, you never want to restore system data as this has a tendency to cause fc's.
Hope that clears it up.
Thanks Cappy!

1. You can do that if you already rooted.
2. You can do that easy, even with out having to root. I use 'Android Central
Sideload Wonder Machine' (its a program you download and use on your pc)
3. Use Beautiful Widgets or Fancy Widget. Might need to be rooted to customize some UI.
4. For battery life I use Battery Indicator Pro. I like 'GPS Status' to test GPS.
I myself is not rooted or not running any custom roms. Not worth the risk to me and I can wait for the official update. My phone works and looks great. GPS is good enough when outdoors.

FYI This will also help others who have the same questions. Be nice.
To answer your questions, the most popular rom currently in use would be cognition (located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532). This handles all the needs you are looking for and more.
To make things pretty I would recommend using launcherpro and Beautiful Widgets. The best music player is poweramp.

[Q] Anyone With Root and Rom Info For Samsung Galaxy S Showcase Read This

I obtained a Samsung Galaxy S Showcase for Cristmas but as anyone that knows a cellular south phone right out the box sucks and does not live up to the full potential i had the motorola droid wich was the Milestone for CSouth now reading through google and forums people are saying the facinate ones work and the vibriant ones work on top of that i forgot the steps and programs used to root and run rom manager so if anyone could point me in the right direction as to how to sucssesfully root this SAMSUNG GALAXY S SHOWCASE FOR CELLULARSOUTH would be much apprecheated .
Also for the rom manager i found that chevyno1 rom wich gives you simply stunning i beleave the newest version is 8.8 was prolly the best rom in the rom manager so far has anyone tried to install that one there galaxy and how is it running.
Thank You for Your Time and Please Feel Free To Call If you Do not Feel like typing alll the step 228-697-7467
Z4root in the market works fine for getting root. It will even unroot for you. I haven't tried a rom manager or flashed any other firmware yet. So far I am just watching the forums here waiting to here of other Cellular South Showcase owners who have success with a custom rom. Please let us know if you find something good that works.

I've got a showcase rooted with z4root and running the voodoo 5 lagfix that can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=871948
I noticed an immediate performance boost after installation, been working great and it's been that way for two or three weeks now. I did a benchmark with Quadrant Standard and it topped out at over 1700.

Can you please instruct me on how to find z4root in the market... I have searched for it dozens of times and it keeps saying 'unable to find, make sure you typed the name correctly.'
:-( very unhappy camper here, as I've been trying to root my Showcase for almost a month now and can't find that app...
you can try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
Just google Z4Root via a web browser (pc or phone). Download it and transfer it to the root of sd card. Then navigate to it through phone and launch. I will take a little while to complete so make sure you have a good charge and some patience. After 5-10 minutes your phone will reboot and it will be done.
Rooting Samsung Galaxy S Showcase
I just got my showcase yesterday and I would like to root it.
I just have a couple of quesions:
If I use Z4root, is it safe? Will Android 2.1 still be on it whenever it finishes?
Will it be completely blank, free of bloatware? This will be my first time rooting
and I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit nervous. I don't want to brick my phone
or mess it up in any way, I just want all the bloatware gone and to be able to
use my phone to its fullest extent.
Thank you!
I have rooted/Rom My showcase
I have rooted my phone using z4. I am running the pick N pack 3 rom.
It was not terrible difficult to do if you have done other phones in the past.
Rooting your phone does not wipe out any software or change out your rom image. It strictly allows applications to execute with higher privileges.
It will let you run things like "Wireless Tether for root user" . You will however need those elevated privileged to be able to replace the rom image on your phone.
I updated my phone to 2.2 so i can use Google Voice Actions. I have had it on many of my phones in the past and missed it. After upgrading my phone, the Google voice actions has a bug. I am unable to call or send text using voice actions. It seems voice actions will not see the last name in my contacts. I can not tell if this is an error with my Google account or on my phone.
I got my rom Image from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970331 but it seems it has been taken down since then.
I do hear that Cellular South is coming out with the 2.2 update. They have been telling me "in a few weeks" since mid Feb. It is getting VERY frustrating. I asked them again yesterday and now they are saying the end of April. Anyway, I hope this helps guys.
Yes z4root...download app.... v...i'll give details...
Download App- Amazon app store...once downloaded search for..Z4root and bingo...Enjoy the Z4root!

Rom Manager preloaded?

I just purchased the inspire today, little over a hour ago, very familiar with the custom roms and android, just came from captivate. Mine came with rom manager installed, how does this make sense? its not even rooted. And if for some reason it is a returned phone can they resale it as new?
If you put in your Google account when the phone first boots up it automatically starts installing the apps you had installed previously (in this case, you must have had a phone with ROM Manager on it tied to your Google account at some point).
really? it never did that on captivate, and it was only that maps and soemthing else that was on there asking if i wanted to update them. like right away, i never seen anything like it was d/l something i had tons of stuff installed on my other phone.

That feature was always broken on Samsung ROMs. Did you ever install CM? The feature worked on CM so maybe that's where you had ROM Manager installed and it was backed up.
well i was back on stock been back on stock for awhile on samsung phone. and yea had rom manager installed on it, but had alot of other stuff from market. When I got this phone today right when i started messing with it something came up asking if i wanted to update 4 apps and rom manager was one of them. So made me think it came with it, and if it d/l the app for me shouldnt it have asked me? I mean some apps are pretty big. and if it did d/l it cause i had it on other phone where are all the other apps i had? btw it never did that with my droid x or vibrant either.

Sounds like it was a returned phone to me. Just for grins I had a friend at my old att store test one out, threw my sim in and loaded it up, set my account up to check email and non of my apps installed from the market, had a prompt to update gmail and I think one other but that was about it. Did you get it from a core ATT store or a local retailer?
I have had this on several different phones, though it never worked on my captivate. I believe if you select backup google data at some point and then again when setting up the new phone it triggers it. Not all apps will automatically download but many do.

of the 20 or so i have unboxed i have yet to see one with it on there ... my guess is it is a possible return that was resold ...
did you get it at a dealership store? (radio shack, best buy, or a similar place) or an actual corporate store?

[Q] missing apps after switching from Captivate to Skyrocket

I upgraded from the Captivate to the Skyrocket last week. I went to re-install my apps from the market, but it only showed about 3 of the free apps I had and all of 6 of the apps I paid for.
Any idea how I can get all of the apps I previously downloaded to show up in "my apps" as available for install? Or do I have to go through and re-install all of these 1 by 1?
Sometimes the market can be goofy like that.. you can wIt about 24 hours to see if they pop up. Or try and push menu settings applications manage applications... find market and clear the data then check. Or yes go find them one by one

The market will limit your access to apps that will run on the version of Android you're using if the developer has specified it in the market listing.
What apps are you missing? I moved from a Captivate to a Skyrocket a well and I'm loving the speed upgrade.

I had about 160 apps or so D) prior to the switch. I have so far manually restored about 80 that I use all the time.
The Skyrocket has 2.3.5 on it right now, and I'm fairly positive that all the apps previously on my cappy supported Gingerbread.
also, I did use Titantium backup to backup all apps on the cappy as well as nandroid it. But I can't transfer them over to this phone I don't think... maybe?
The market "Should" have shown me everything that I had previously downloaded/installed (except for the APKs that I sideloaded.). It's annoying, but oh well. maybe this will force me to weed out some unwanted apps...
And yeah, the speed/performance difference between the cappy is HUGE. Also, I'm getting close to 24 hrs of moderate use on the SR, which dominates the cappy's 10-12hrs I was getting.
I'm loving the new SR over my old Captivate too. And the battery life is amazingly so much better as is the GPS!
However, when I go to check for software update I get that there is no update and I'm still on 2.3.5 on ATT. Not sure why it thinks I'm on the current version with all the talk about 2.3.6 up here...

awesome. I have done this between similar versions using Titanium backup, just wasn't sure about going between 2.2-2.3 versions.
Haven't rooted yet, so guess I'll need to do that tonight to get 'er going.
I'm annoyed that the market didn't just take care of this for me. I believe it worked the last time I flashed, my captivate, but it has been awhile.

How to REMOVE bloatware from your Galaxy S4

Hello all, while messing around trying to root some Chinise tablets I have been buying thu Aliexpress.com I came across this program callled MOBOROBO. It can be found at www.moborobo.com. It is a free program and I use it to manage all my android devices. I allows full management of almost any android device that I connect to my pc.
Just received my 32Gb S4. After finding out about the space issue and found out the 32GB was coming, I marched right in the ATT store and swapped. Had to pay the restocking fee but felt it was worth it. I have already rooted the phone and was thinking of disabling the bloatware while I wait for recovery ROM.
I just came home from work and connected my phone to the pc because while out today I decided to bite the bullet and took the OTA from ATT. Update went well, did not see any difference to nothing on phone except that it killed ROOT. I connected my phone and moborobo came up. I minimized it while I re-ROOT-ed my S4. I then went back to mess with moborobo to do a backup (I use it sometimes even though I have TiBU.) I then clicked on the apps tap at the top and noticed it listed all the apps on the phone. The was also a list of system apps. Went to the list and decided to uninstall some of the bloat. I figured maybe they won't be deleted, no prob if they don't I could then "disable".
To my surprise moborobo UNINSTALLED ALL the apps I threw at it. I was very cautious, I did not uninstall everything, only the ones I was sure of. Now I can always go back and do the others when I am sure I need to. Please check it out.
i just tried it and it works on att apps i just delete all this att crab.but this program doesn't know my phone name.

If your drivers are installed it will show your device name. While the program is running try disconnecting and reconnecting your phone. I have used it with my S4 (SGH-I337) my wife's S3 (SGH-I737) my older S2 (SGH-I777) and last night a friend came by with an S3 from t-mobile and when I connected it it came up (SGH-I339) I think. I don't have the most updated version of the program ( was not sure about keeping it) but mine starts up as soon as I connect my phone and sometimes it does not readily show my phone name.

I just deleted the AT&T apps along with yahoo and that yp stuff. Since I just got the phone I wanted to check out everything and decide what I want to get rid of. I read somewhere in this forum, someone posted a long list of all the apps including the Samsung ones. However I am going to be cautious so nothing gets messed up before we have some good ROMS coming from the great xda-developers kitchens. Some of the apps are not easy to identify from their apk, example: ATT navigator, the apk says telenav....apk.

I am with you on those apps being good apps, I am not sure however if TiBU actually remove the apps or just freeze them. I have used it to freeze apps the I could not delete or wish to return to at a later time.
In all of this though, one thing has come to my mind. Even if we remove all the bloatware, we still do not have more space because all of this reside in the special partition that we do not have access to until it is re-partition or allowed access in a recovery ROM. With all the removal that I have done I did not see an increase of space available. Going back to moborobo I can see that my system file list have been greatly reduced but my available space have not increased. I have therefore concluded that removing bloatware will only console me to the fact that all that junk is not on my phone. The 6.5Gb used for system files and bloatware is a partition that was set aside. I could be wrong on this so if necessary please teach me.
Yep, with Titanium backup you can either freeze or permanently uninstall any app or system app.
My S4 is still in FedEx' hands so I haven't had a chance to see the file system yet.
Speaking of FedEx. I'm in Austin, Texas. FedEx picked up the phone from AT&T in Ft Worth Texas. Now the tracking shows it is in Memphis, TN for some reason.

Yeah, returned the 16g ver for the 32g yesterday rooted that sucker using my new and improved S4-Chopper, rom toolbox uninstalling apps & backing it up using titanium pro then started tweaking it... I would suggest making a list delete 4 apps then back-up del 4 mo then back-up. That way you can get this monster the way you want it... mine is pumping out Slightly over 13000 on quadrant so im happy!!
It goes to Memphis because that is FedEx's main hub. So all packages go though there first

I accidentally deleted a system app. It was yellow pages so it's not a big deal but I would like to have it backed up with my other system apps. If I factory reset it will I get it back, or do I need to find a apk for it? Or would I have to go to the extreme and flash the stock TouchWiz rom

Memphis is FedEx's Hub. Everything goes through there, even when it means going from Texas to Memphis and back to Texas. The Postal Service does similarly if I mail a letter to someone in town. It goes to the regional hub (30 miles West from home and back to home.
