Installing OTA update file manually - Thunderbolt General

I have not received the OTA update from Verizon on my phone yet. I continue to check for it but the popup screen that says its checking for a new update just disappears and nothing happens. I do not even get the error message that the servers are unavailable. I do not know if something is wrong on my phone with the check new option but im not having a lot of confidence in receiving the update OTA. So I would like to install the update manually through HBOOT and recovery. can somebody please help me through the process? I have downloaded the OTA file onto my computer. Do I need to rename is update.zip or PG05IMG.zip? i have already tired update.zip and i get a operation error and my phone just reboots. I would like to do this without having to wipe my device in the process. My phone is not rooted and is running stock. Thanks in advance for the help.

Unless you want to have random reboots, don't install it. The update doesn't do **** and just causes more problems than it solves.

Where did you download the update from?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

The random reboots were not related to the update. it was related to the cell towers and network. Myself and others that have installed it are running fine.
You cannot put the update in without losing all phone internal data, such as apps, screen setups, email settings and so fourth..
If you want to install it, download the file and rename it to PG05IMG.zip and put it on the phones memory card(not in any folders).
Power off the phone & then hold volume down and power together at the same time and it will boot into Hboot and see the file and then ask if you want to update. Just follow prompts and you will be fine. Once it gets to the thunderbolt animation screen, it will sit there for a couple of minutes (up to 5) dont panic, just wait and it will boot up.
This will delete all phone internal data and make it like its straight out of the box when it was purchased except it will now have the updated firware and radio. Your sd card will be fine, it shouldnt delete anything off the sd card but always back up the card in case.

So there is no way to do this without having my phone wiped clean? There must be something wrong with my phone with the whole software update process. Everytime I hit the Check new under Software update, the pop up box comes up saying Checking for new Software available now. but after a few seconds, it just disappears and nothing happens. I do not even get a message saying that your phone is up to date or no update is available. Is this normal? This has been doing this since day 1. Has anybody experienced this and is there s fix for it? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Since when does updating the radio wipe data/cache?
I've flashed multiple radios and it doesn't delete anything.

He is not just wiping the radio, he wants to install the new update maually. If it was just radio, he would be fine.. The update will flash the new radio and new firmware... The firmware part will wipe it

I'm in the exact same situation as the OP, but my phone is running perfectly without the update. I have read a lot of complaints here relating to reboots as well as the gps getting worse. So I plan to avoid the ota like Steve Jobs avoids calories. But I am wondering if not having the update will be an issue when Gingerbread rolls out for the TBolt? I don't want to be left out for that one!

Updating should fix the issue with you getting the manual update to work properly or you can just do a factory reset. Either way you will wipe the data...
There is no way right now to update the phone without wiping, sorry...
If you have your contacts as google contacts, once you sign back into gmail. The phone will verify your account and resync your contacts and redownload any apps (paid & free) that you got from the market... its not that bad really

How does the OTA update not wipe your phone when updating using Check now on your phone?

Curious about this as well. Updating via the menu didn't wipe my phone. My firmware was updated along w/ the radio.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

Wondering the same thing here.....

One possible reason for some not receiving update Ota is that verizon may be rolling it out to certin groups of thunderbolts at a time. I know they did this with my original droid. But I could be wrong and have no info to back it up.

Mine popped up asking me to update but i didnt accept cause im rooted

All I can say is if you update throught he verizon notification you will be ok. From what I know, there is something in the package from verizon that puts it as an update and keeps most data and settings. When you flash it any other way, the update part is not seen by the phone, rooted or not rooted.
If you are that worried, wait for the update to show on your phone. Updates usually roll out over 2 weeks in no particular order. Also some others said they had the same issue when they checked for an update but they kept trying it that way and it eventually connected to it.
There really is not more I can say, your options are wait for the over the air update or just flash it now and take a few minutes to setup your phone..

When your rooted and accept an update, it shouldn't install anyway. most roms have it blocked from installing because the signature doesnt match

Wipe, and re install. Do you have the new radio installed?
The Rom is not the cause unless you didn't wipe...
Verizon is still having issues, mostly with text messages.

I actually ended up fixing the problem. I think it was the Hot Restart I did. I just rebooted my phone normally and I got 19 text messages lol. I wonder why the hot restart did that?
Hey I have a question - I'm pretty sure I downloaded the new radio when I flashed the new ROM but I don't think I ever installed it. Is there a way to check to see if I have the new one? I'm not really sure how to install the radio anyways, am I supposed to flash it through ROM manager like I did with the ROM? I remember downloading both files and I flashed the ROM but I don't think I ever went through with the Radio file because everything seemed to be working fine.

You can flash the radios independent of the ROM and you flash them through HBOOT (Bootloader.) You can download the radios from the Bamf 1.6 thread (non-remix) as there is a link to download in the OP. Then put the PG zip file on the root of your SD Card and restart into bootloader (you can get there from the Bamf restart screen.) It will detect the zip file on the SD Card and then ask you if you want to update. Press the volume up button to say yes and let it upgrade. When it's done it'll tell you to press POWER to reboot. Then you should be good to go.
Make sure you move the radio zip file off of the root of your SD card into a folder when you're done or you can have issues down the road.
Good luck.
If you didn't boot in to hboot you didn't flash the new radio...
You can verify this by going in to menu > settings > About Phone and the baseband version should be 1.16.00.402w_1
If you don't have that version you need to update the radio. Make sure the radio (P05IMG.zip) is on the root of your SD CARD. Reboot phone and choose the bootloader option from the reboot menu. That will boot in to hboot, follow the directions to install the zip and you should be gtg.

Tbolt problem

I’m hoping that someone may read this and have an idea of something to try. Or something I’m missing.
I’ve worked on and rooted multiple android phones and never once had an issue until the thunderbolt.
A friend has a thunderbolt that we previously rooted and all was working well until one day after a reboot the phone got stuck at the white HTC boot screen and then after rebooting a second time, the phone essentially “restored” a stored image of some sort. Now EVERY time you reboot the phone, it first boots and gets stuck at the HTC white boot screen, then after rebooting it a second time, it goes back to this exact same “stored image” state. If you change the desktop settings, remove and install apps and then reboot (twice), the apps you removed come back, the apps you downloaded are gone and the desktop goes back to this “stored” state.
I’ve tried re-rooting, unrooting, auto root, auto unroot, fix permissions via clockwork recovery as well as through rom manager…no matter what I do to this phone after It reboots (twice), it constantly goes back to the same “stored image”
Also, after flashing a PG05IMG.zip file through HBOOT, when the phone reboots its exhibits the same behavior..gets stuck at white HTC screen, then second boot brings the phone RIGHT back to the “stored image” state.
Any ideas or help appreciated!
i think i saw someone else with this. let me see if i can find post.

I wish it were that simple!! Unfortunately its not a bad /sdcard/PG05IMG.zip file that is being loaded back onto the phone. I verified this by booting the phone without the sdcard at all.
have you unrooted and rerooted?
Also do you have anything setup with Ti Backup?

The problem your having is ROM related not radio related. The PG05IMG file should have nothing to do with it. You need to do a wipe/factory reset and flash a new ROM. With those problems I wouldn't trust possibly restoring a backup of a corrupted ROM

I attempted to unroot and even re-root, but NOTHING will take...no matter what I flash, the phone will ALWAYS revert back to this same image.

Via which method?
RootandBoot, unfortunately even trying to flash new ROMs result in the exact same result...boot to white htc, gets stuck..reboot phone once more and it goes back to this crap image.
I also did the factory reset and also all 3 wipes (data, cache, dalvik) in clockwork...I even ADB shell'd into the phone and deleted stuff from system...after the double reboot...its back!

That is the most bizarre behavior I've ever come across, and I've had 3 android phones. If you can't get it back to stock, then I have no idea what to try next. Have you tried the IRC channel?

[DONE] Fix for "Preparing Sim Card..." Error for CleanROM

Hey,
Starting this thread up as a place to figure out the "Preparing Sim Card" problem.
Essentially, if you flash CleanROM 4.1 with CWM, you'll probably get this error. There were plethora of fixes out there, such as:
1. Clearing all cache (fastboot/recovery)
2. Clearing all data/force stopping problem apps (people/dialer/messaging)
3. RUUing back to stock
4. Flashing a new radio
5. Removing/Changing SIM cards
6. Trying dialer trick:
.....a. Go to Dialer (if you can't access it, clear the data in it first)
.....b. dial *#*#4636#*#*
.....c. Turn off the radio
.....d. Turn on the radio, and right as the toast appears, choose something from the drop down menu.
.....e. Run a ping test to make sure everything's alright.
7. Used TWRP to clear system/flash new ROM
8. Tried another ROM with GSM Patch
CURRENT STATUS: WORKING!!!! =D
The answer to all your problems issss........
Well, it's multi-step
1. Make sure to flash back via RUU (preferably 1.82 since 1.85 was a b**** for me to re-root T_T)
2. Make sure to unlock your bootloader again
3. Install back CWM (I know...wtf?!) <<THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT (believe it or not)
4. Go back and flash CleanMOD 3.1 or something (just anything below 4.1 should do the trick) [if just installing CleanMOD doesn't work, install the GSM Patch too!]
5. NOW install TWRP
6. Install CleanMOD 4.1
7. SUCCESS!!!
Also, thanks to tehdef, who also tried this method:
Here is what I did to break my phone.
I had the following MODS.
-AOKP 6.1
-CWM
Decided I wanted to test something on CleanROM 4.1
- Flashed CR4.1 in CWM
Got stuck in Boot Cycle and CWM would not load
1. Locked Bootloader
2. Installed 1.85 Evita RUU
3. Unlocked Bootloader
4. Installed TWRP
5. Flashed AOKP 6.1
At this point, I still had an issue. Instead of receiving the "Preparing SIM" Message, I had absolutely zero signal, and I could not "SAVE" an APN.
6. Rebooted to Bootloader
7. Reset to Factory while in AOKP
8. TWRP Loads
9. Reboot to System
My phone now has signal and full contacts and I can make calls and send Texts and MMS with no additional modifications. Please note that with AOKP Superuser comes installed and works just fine, so for whatever reason I did not have to root my device.
NOTE: YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE CLEANROM 3.1 IN ORDER TO GET BACK TO A WORKING STATE!!! Just any rom supporting the unofficial CWM should do. =] (at least I think so, but I'll confirm when someone get's back to me =D)
Thanks goes out to...
Scott for his awesome ROMs and his life lessons
kleeman7 for toughing it out and helping me through the entire thing
tehdef for helping me test out several of my theories
shackman716 for suggesting the idea that worked (it was so crazy it actually worked! XD)
and thanks goes out to anyone I forgot to mention. XD
Now, back to more ROM flashing

We are well past that point, redpoint. We've already flashed, and now things aren't working correctly.
In my specific case, XDA Mobile didn't Bold/Red the text to use TWRP instead of CWM, so when I flashed and attempted to boot, I got stuck in a boot cycle. I went back to try to get into recovery, and it wouldn't even go there. So I re-locked, and flashed the 1.85 RUU.
Now I'm getting the same 'Preparing' issue only when I attempt to open up Phone, Contacts, Messaging, all on the stock RUU while being Locked.
I can't even attempt to re-flash the Stock RUU because I'm getting Error 170 on the RUU installer.
This majorly sucks.
Error 170 is a usb communication error and is fixable. Turn off HTC sync. Check for it in running processes. If you still get the error reboot to the bootloader make sure the phone says fastboot usb in red then start the ruu.

The OP never stated any of that, and it doesn't seem that he is stuck in the same way you are. So I was asking if he tried to flash TWRP, and then reflash the ROM. Which is not listed as one of his "possible fixes".
I had the same error. I believe I was able to reproduce it by adding my Google Play Account then adding my gmail account (with the same email address) using Activesync. Right after adding my gmail account I would get an application crash (cant recall which one) the phone would reboot and go into a reboot cycle when "Preparing Sim Card". To avoid the issue I did the following:
1. Wipe System, Wipe Data
2. Flash CleanROM 4.1 DE
3. Wipe Cache
4. Install Mods
5. Boot up, add Google Account from the setup wizard
6. Turn on Auto-Sync from Wizard
7. Go into Settings > Accounts > Uncheck sync Email,Contacts, Calendar
8. Clear Data for Email, Contacts, Calendar apps.
9. Add gmail via Activesync w/ Email/Contact/Calendar sync

Well, I tried emailing and stuff, and it seems anything regarding data seems to be alright. It just seems to be the issue with phone/sms data now. I believe it's something software related as it still reads my sim just fine, and it recognizes when it gets a call. Just when I get a call, it repeatedly FCs. I might give it a try though, so thanks!

Sorry, I had to go out for lunch, so I didn't really go into much detail. I have tried using TWRP and is still using that atm, and also tried flashing a rom with GSM Patch, which I'll edit the OP to match. Both of these did not work and I'm going to try and pull a logcat or something. Will update when I get it
Just got mine to flash. I noticed though that for whatever reason my current 1.85 had an _r2 at the end, and the one I'm flashing does not. Curious if ATT network is rejecting due to the RUU version.
Guess we will find out when it's done.
Edit: Nope, nada... Same issue.
Curious though why none of my contacts sync. seems like this is a contacts issue for me.

i feel like the dialer and the contacts are linked together. if we can solve one, we can probably solve both. I looked in my catlog and they stated that they couldnt find a particular file/db in the /data/data folder. ill look into this and see what happens

lol actually, i just came from Cobra ROM and yeah I cleared everything and flashed, but to no avail. I can always try again, but time's running out and I don't think it's going to work since Ive done it over 15 times in order to try everything

That's a good idea, maybe once Scott reads his thread he will have some input for everyone.

tehdef, try these two for me and see where you get. I'm trying to get my phone into another rom so I can try this out cause 1.85 won't let me root (the problem we have specifically screws up that exploit, go figure!) so let me know how it works. I'll be trying it in a bit so i'll update back when i test it out
...actually, tehdef, did you ever unlock your bootloader with the one-click without HTCDEV unlock at any point in time? This might help me out cause this might also be the problem. Thanks!

Clearing contacts seems to work. My list is now populating.
Attempted to send text. Prepairing SIM Card returns.

Unfortunately the Android.acore process has stopped when I tried to sync my Gmail contacts after clearing everything.
I'm having the exact same issues. I've usually been able to figure out all my own screw ups but just not this time. I too flashed cleanrom 4.1 using cwm because i failed at reading the directions. Got stuck at recovery and was able to install a 1.85 ruu and them proceeded to put twrp on it and flash cleanrom 4.1. Everything seemed fine but then i noticed that my xfinity email would open and and then quickly close. Didn't think much of it, but then i realized that also the phone and contacts do the same thing. I've tried everything but holy water to get this fixed including trying other roms, fixing permissions in recovery, clearing phone and contacts data, deleting db.journal file, and shaking the phone really hard....
Any ideas?
Something is corrupt.
I want to put AOKP back on the phone, because I honestly think it's Sense related.

lol at the shaking your phone really hard XD
Anyways, I have a theory:
there are two ways we COULD possibly fix this:
1. obtain a rom that has root. Get root explorer or somehow get into /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/ and delete .db-journal if its in there. Do this in conjunction with clearing out the data of all the affected apps and their sister apps (i.e. Contacts, Contacts Storage, Contacts Sync) and force stopping all of them. Can't test this cause bootloader refuses to unlock atm)
2.lock the bootloader, RUU to 1.82 (NOTE: NOT 1.85!) and try to unlock using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1734558. REMEMBER take out your SIM card! but maybe this might help not 100% sure if this is what caused it for me, so it's best to consider it too. Can't test this right now because I am stuck without a BL unlock and i can't get root on this firmware
*EDIT* ahahhahahah i lied. no sim card needed, so why would it rely on mobile data? ahh im such a silly person alright here goes!
i'll let you know when i get out of my pickle, but it might be a while. That, or i might just get pissed off enough to just go to the store and look like an idiot cause i really do feel like one right now and I need to get the phone working T_T

tf700 Major, strange problem after update!

Everyone help! I just updated my tf700 to the newest update which was supposed to be minor. Everything went smooth but upon boot up everything went wrong. Every single app force closes upon unlocking the lock screen. I get a pop up for just about every single app that's trying to start saying sorry the app has closed. Oddly, any app that was originally on the device works OK. I did a normal reboot and then again I saw the upgrading message and another message saying optimizing apps and it counts through the apps its optimizing. Then again when I reboot fully it does the same thing. I did a cold reboot and it seemed a little smoother but then again I had the same force closes and error messages. And still only the stock apps will function, anything and everything else force closes upon opening.
I've never even heard of errors or problems such as this. I have no idea what to do and I have lots of data on the device I don't want to lose and can't lose. By the way I am rooted and I did not uninstall any stock apps. Just froze a couple. Build # now 10.6.1.14.10-20130801
Please any and all suggestions!
Ps - under kernel version it says (concerned about name cancer):
3.1.10-gba9af5

There's your problem...
Sorry mate, but I can't help myself - attention everyone, here comes a rant:
I cannot believe how many people do not backup the data on their tablets! This is the second time in as many days that I read: "Something unexpected went wrong and I cannot loose my data".
If you did not back it up the question is not if you loose it, the question is WHEN!
This is a portable device! Pre-destined to be lost, stolen, dropped, submerged, spilled upon, run over by trucks - and those are everyday scenarios which are LIKELY. Don't even want to get into freak accidents... It's so easy to protect your data now-a-days! There's Dropbox in conjunction with Dropsync, there's Google Drive and a host of other solutions. There is no excuse for having only one copy of important data...... End of rant
To your problem. Before you apply a stock update you have to replace/unfreeze all stock apps. Usually the update just fails if you have frozen system apps - I do not know what went wrong in your case.
How did you update? OTA or manually?
It sounds as if your data partition is corrupted since the stock apps (installed in /system) work, but your user apps (installed in /data) do not. But that your system apps work is the good news! At least you didn't brick your tablet.
One of the stock apps is the file browser. See if you can copy your precious data to a microSD. And I'm only talking about data like pictures, files, video, projects. Don't worry about your apps.
If the file browser cannot see your data you're gonna have to get into the area of data recovery tools - lots of research ahead of you there.....
Another possibility may be - if you can access your tablet from your PC through USB - to ADB pull files off your tablet, check if your computer recognizes your tablet.
Once you have your data safe (or given up on it) you can perform a factory reset and possibly have to reflash the firmware.
BTW, if you did not protect root with Voodoo Rootkeeper before the update or if you flashed the full firmware (as opposed to doing an OTA update) you also lost root. And Asus plugged the hole Motochopper used in the latest firmware version. At this point 10.6.1.14.10 is not rootable without unlocking.

I would just wipe and start over, even if you get it functional again you could end up with problems.
Hmmm - I too think you are going to lose your data here as I can't see how you can recover without wiping if everything is force closing now.
BTW don't worry about the kernel version being cancer that is Asus naming convention. They have been using planets and have now run out so they are now using astrology instead of astronomy which is rather odd but there you go.
Previously we had mercury, venus, jupiter, uranus etc now we have aquarius and cancer......
What don't make sense and I can't accept, I've updated this device 4 times now total and never had a problem like this. Also, I've updated a few devices with frozen apps and had no problems. Are frozen apps really the cause? I can't see it.
And if I do have to wipe, and I really don't want to, will I still be rooted after wiping and is there a way to back up things since I can't use 3rd party apps? (Also, I used voodoo)
It just seems like something went wrong with the update, say something initializing or cache problem, and im sure there's an easy fix.
Please, keep the ideas coming...
I guess, I just need to clerify , stock bootloader, stock ROM, but rooted??

Sorry all was reading it on the app wow that really is not good lol
Correct, stock rom rooted. No interest in custom roms. I know there's gotta be something simple, maybe even a chkdsk in linux or something. I just hate to wipe n start over. My files seem to be intact and non stock apps start to open for a split second then they force close.
Any responses guys? Would really appreciate any help.
Thanks,

Yea, wipe, and no you won't keep root on a stock rom wipe. As I said previously even if you managed to "fix" the problem you would be creating potential for lockups/forced reboots. Your also not the first to have issues when upgrading with sys apps frozen, look around the forum, its been discussed before. Sucks, but there it is.
I have the same issue, and I can't remember freezing any apps. I don't have any critical data that I can't loose though. Still it sucks to have to wipe if there's another way.
Stock, locked bootloader, rooted. Temp unrooted using OTA Rootkeeper and did the OTA. Then upon the next reboot, all apps FC. All earlier updates has worked flawless. :/

boy, i can't believe how close i was to actually going forward with this OTA when it "pooped" up in the notification area. good thing i had just been reading xda forums and i saw a couple posts bout ppl losing root and whatnot with said update.
now i am a happy camper on Cromi-x =D
best bet as a few already said is to try to extract your data from the thingy, and wipe it out, if you wanna take a n00b advice, if you're close to the end of your warranty period, go ahead and unlock it then proceed to cromi-x it. i was of the same position as you back when i bought it, not interested in custom roms and whatnot, just root...... but since my warranty was expiring next month anyways, and it had grown considerably sloppy and laggy, i figured out, why not? and i gotta tell you, it was the right thing to do.
hands down
anyways, good luck on your recovery.
I wiped and downgraded to .8 and will happily stay there for now. Maybe until I unlock the bootloader in the future.

If you don't have it download Titanium Backup, hit Menu and wipe Dalvic cache. Reboot. The reboot will take a while because the Dalvic has to be rebuild - so don't panic
If that doesn't do it, I'm fresh out of ideas.
I tried to wipe via the stock recovery, but all the FC's was still there, and what's worse was that because of the FC's I couldn't finish (or quit) the "Set up your tablet" thingie. I always crashed on setting up a gmail account. Didn't matter if I was connected to the internet or not, or if I declined setting it up. So I had to do everything from the stock recovery.
Downloaded the .8 firwmare, unpacked the first .zip file, renamed the second .zip (to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip) and put it on an empty micro SD, made sure the SD-card was FAT32, booted to recovery (Power Vol down for 5 sec) and installed it via RCK, Android stock recovery.
Thanks for the tip, though. It might have worked. I don't know.

A Standard Update Put my Phone into a Reboot Loop? Why? But it does Unlock.

Galaxy s8 on Verizon, a standard update notice kept appearing past few days, finally installed it. The minute it finished, it is now in an endless restarting loop. The phone does unlock and show my homescreen. I can get into it, but I only get about 10 seconds to do stuff then it freezes/restarts. Tried Clear Partition Cache in the recovery mode. Tried Safe Mode. No luck.
When I rush over to Settings>Software Update, and click it, it says "Software update in progress"....so it makes me think it is the remnants of the new software update completing itself, and that causes the rebooting. The final stages perhaps? Is there a way to CEASE that the second I unlock my phone? To stop all the background stuff.
Or maybe wouldnt make a difference. Any ideas besides factory reset? Way to revert back?
Wanted to backup a few recent pictures first.
A factory reset is the last resort to fix this.
Maybe it's theme related. Try toggling the button layout (settings -> display -> navigation bar) a couple of times.
If you have substratum installed, try disabling it.
If you want to back up your pictures;
Have you tried accessing the phone using a computer? Either just through a file explorer or by using ADB? To use ADB, you may need to get into settings -developer mode
I tried plugging into a computer, but I only have about 10 seconds, so I dont get enough time to access the files. I get into the phone drive on windows Samsung Galaxy>DCIM> CAMERA> ...then it reboots.
Developer mode is already enabled. Can ADB be used while on the recovery mode screen? I can access that command line looking screen as long as needed.
But accessing the phone normally like turning it on and unlocking the screen would not work, I would keep losing the connection when it reboots.

Try downloading that same version of Odin flashable stock firmware from the internet, the same version as the update that you received, then flash that via Odin. As long as the update does not upgrade your bootloader or your binary, it will not wipe your user data(pics).
But first....
If you can get to the homescreen and unlock the device, don't touch anything else once the device opens, just connect it to PC and retrieve your photos from the internal storage, then factory reset the device.

I dont know what version the update was that caused it or how I would find out. But I ended up getting it fixed.
I just downloaded the most recent version firmware from SamFW.com, and used that one. The First flash, the phone was worse! It was now stuck at the samsung logo looping. I flashed it a second time, then it worked! Phone back to normal and backed up my pictures. I had used the home CSC file too, and none of my user data was wiped. I thought it was supposed to wipe that, got lucky
I assume once that OTA update comes back and tries to install, I may have this problem all over again. I can't go forever without the security updates.

I had tried that a couple times, it lasts about 15 seconds then restarts. Not enough time, I would get to the DCIM folder but before pics loaded, it froze and restarted.

The most recent version that you downloaded might be the same update. The OTA updates and the Odin flashable updates are the same thing, the OTA update is just more automated. Flashing the same version as the OTA update via Odin, yields the same results. I think the Home CSC is the one that doesn't wipe user data. I think the Home CSC is intended for users that intend on keeping the device and using it in the same region/network and the other CSC is intended for users that want to sell the device or use the device in a different region or if you have a custom ROM and custom recovery on the device and you want to restore to stock. I could be wrong though.
If you do get a prompt for an OTA update, backup your data then factory reset the device then allow the device to update. That should prevent any further issues with updating via OTA.

Okay, I see.
Well when the phone did boot back up normally after the 2nd flash, there was a pop up that said software update unsuccessful. So I'm not sure if the same OTA update actually updated per se. But yeah, next time Im ready, I've got everything backed up!
Thanks so much!

I always prefer updating via Odin instead of OTA, it is much better and less chance of issues such as bootloop or random reboot. These are the issues you were having. I actually suggest using Odin or Smart Switch on PC the next time an update is available. Or, on older devices, use Odin or Samsung Kies to update. OTA is frequently unreliable, it commonly causes bugs, especially if the update is a newer android version than what is already on the device, it usually causes conflicts due to user data from your previous system apps and user settings conflicting with the new system because of differences between the older system apps and the newer system apps or differences in settings in the older system conflicting with changes in how the newer system settings are handled. Systems don't like using system data that was created by another system when there are differences between the two systems.
Another method that can be used is if your manufacturer/carrier releases a stock update.zip that can be flashed via stock recovery, they are made specifically for flashing via stock recovery ONLY, they are not the same as the stock firmware file that is flashed via Odin. These can be downloaded to the phone's internal/external memory then you boot into stock recovery then factory reset/wipe cache in recovery(backup data before wiping) then you can flash the update.zip. Alternatively, you can flash the update.zip without resetting/wiping(this is called a "dirty" flash), in theory, a dirty flash is useful when you don't want to wipe data or lose data. But that comes with a chance of causing bugs, as you have discovered for yourself during your update process.
