Tbolt problem - Thunderbolt General

I’m hoping that someone may read this and have an idea of something to try. Or something I’m missing.
I’ve worked on and rooted multiple android phones and never once had an issue until the thunderbolt.
A friend has a thunderbolt that we previously rooted and all was working well until one day after a reboot the phone got stuck at the white HTC boot screen and then after rebooting a second time, the phone essentially “restored” a stored image of some sort. Now EVERY time you reboot the phone, it first boots and gets stuck at the HTC white boot screen, then after rebooting it a second time, it goes back to this exact same “stored image” state. If you change the desktop settings, remove and install apps and then reboot (twice), the apps you removed come back, the apps you downloaded are gone and the desktop goes back to this “stored” state.
I’ve tried re-rooting, unrooting, auto root, auto unroot, fix permissions via clockwork recovery as well as through rom manager…no matter what I do to this phone after It reboots (twice), it constantly goes back to the same “stored image”
Also, after flashing a PG05IMG.zip file through HBOOT, when the phone reboots its exhibits the same behavior..gets stuck at white HTC screen, then second boot brings the phone RIGHT back to the “stored image” state.
Any ideas or help appreciated!

i think i saw someone else with this. let me see if i can find post.

take the sd card out

delete/rename PG05IMG.zip

I wish it were that simple!! Unfortunately its not a bad /sdcard/PG05IMG.zip file that is being loaded back onto the phone. I verified this by booting the phone without the sdcard at all.

have you unrooted and rerooted?
Also do you have anything setup with Ti Backup?

The problem your having is ROM related not radio related. The PG05IMG file should have nothing to do with it. You need to do a wipe/factory reset and flash a new ROM. With those problems I wouldn't trust possibly restoring a backup of a corrupted ROM

I attempted to unroot and even re-root, but NOTHING will take...no matter what I flash, the phone will ALWAYS revert back to this same image.
Ti backup is installed but only has a couple apps backed up

I would wipe everything and format system

Via which method?
RootandBoot, unfortunately even trying to flash new ROMs result in the exact same result...boot to white htc, gets stuck..reboot phone once more and it goes back to this crap image.
I also did the factory reset and also all 3 wipes (data, cache, dalvik) in clockwork...I even ADB shell'd into the phone and deleted stuff from system...after the double reboot...its back!

Thats a good question. I don't think the person who owns this phone actually has ever done a backup via clockwork or through rom manager...and when i went into clockwork restore, there weren't any backups visible.
Yes, this is the most odd android problem i've tried to help fix!

If all else fails, go back to bone stock, reboot a few times & see if the "stored image" recurs

Thats the problem...I've been trying to get the phone to stock...actually trying to get it to do anything at this point. As soon as I try to flash ANYTHING, it doesn't work.

That is the most bizarre behavior I've ever come across, and I've had 3 android phones. If you can't get it back to stock, then I have no idea what to try next. Have you tried the IRC channel?

[Q] CWM not working right on new MT

I'm having all kinds of trouble with my MT. I originally flashed CM7 from stock with CWM after wiping factory and cache. The flash errored out the first time, but worked the second time. The gapps install errored out so I just tried rebooting without stock google apps. The phone just booted to the Motorola logo and didn't go any farther. I let it sit for over 20 minutes and no go.
I had made a backup so I went back to CWM to restore the phone. Again, I did a factory and cache wipe, ran the restore, rebooted, but now the phone boots to Motorola logo, then reboots into CWM. So weird!
I have a theory that it has something to do with a hardware problem. When I try to flash another rom (besides cm7) the screen goes blank (no text) and then goes back to the root menu. I tried booting to CWM then plugging it in and removing the battery but after an varied amount of time the phone shuts off.
I've searched and searched and I can't find where anyone's had a problem like this and NOT been able to get the phone back. I'd like a solution, but I'd also like to know if i'm the only one who's had this problem!
thanks!
Never mind
I got it working! I tried a different battery in it and it worked! I'm not sure if it was the battery or I just did the right combination of things, but I'm glad to be back! But for anyone who is having the same issue here's what I did:
Running CWM 5.0.2.6
1. Wipe factory/cache/davlik
2. format sd card
3. shut down
4. use pc to copy stock nandroid backup from androidforums (google "stock triumph restore")
5. boot back to CWM,
6. restore the backup and reboot, should work
**IF you have md5 checksum error, use adb via usb to run these commands and immediately try to restore again:
adb shell
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-06-29.20.22.53
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
# exit
**Make sure to unmount the sd card before restore.
Again, I really don't know if it was battery or not, but I tried this before changing batteries and it didnt work!
But wait, there's more!
Ok, now that I'm able to get back to stock, I'm still unable to flash any custom roms. I wipe/factory reset, format /system, then install update from sd card. When I confirm the update, the screen goes blank (no text), then goes back to the main menu! It does this with any rom!
Any help?
dont think triumph is supported phone according to cwm ?

Are you running the latest cwm?
Sent from my VS910 4G using xda premium
Yep, 5.0.2.6. I just tried CM7 .04 beta because I have a friend who flashed it successfully on his MT. When I ran it it said it was installing for maybe 4 seconds and then said complete. When I rebooted all I got was the Motorola logo.
I just got this phone. Is it possible that Motorola changed something with the hardware to make it not work?
I've managed to get CWM running a little more stable by replacing the boot.img file with the one from CM7, but all I get when I run the zip is this:
-- Installing /sdcard/CM7.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Install from sdcard complete.
that all takes about 6 seconds and I get just the motorola logo when I reboot.
It still goes blank (no text) when I try to flash any other rom (like stockROM) so something is definitely screwy.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I have a friend with a Triumph who successfully flashed cm7. I looked at his phone and found that the model number on his is WX345 while mine is WX435. Maybe my version really does have issues with clockwork?

I did notice that the Triumph isn't listed on Clockwork's site. It is, however, listed on xda. Maybe its not officially supported?
figured it out! It had something to do with the sd card. I was using a 16gb class 10 PNY card. I put the stock 2gb back in it and it worked like a charm. Don't know if it was a defective card or the phone/clockwork just didn't like it.
Bay PONY...Noticed that my pny class 10 16gb was slower(or just took longer to mount and search for media, cause it's bigger) than the 16gb samsung class 2 that came with my epic...Dunno; but glad to hear CWM works! now you can switch back cards
PS. what root method u use command line or gingerbreak?

I've tried both. I like the gingerbreak b/c it adds superuser app for you. Both worked fine though...
But since I installed CM7 I didn't need to root it first.

ROM & Nandroid

I was planning on backing up my phone before a mod.
I downloaded and installed ROM Manager, then the Clockwork mod.
Installing the Clockword mod, the program asked to reboot to complete the installation. I rebooted.
upon reboot it wiped my phone back to original including the sd card WTF!!!!!!!
is going on!
How do I get back my configuration?

I am afraid that you actually install a Rom. When you flash the CWM Recovery the phone does not reboot. It just flashes on running the app. If your configuration and SDcard were erased then there is no much you can do about it. Is really strange, never happened to me when copying the current rom.
so what you're telling me is I'm screwed.

[Q] random bootloop

Ever since I flashed my first ROM, my phone will start doing random bootloops. The part that is WEIRD about this, is that it only seems to happen between about midnight and 8am. I'm on my phone a lot during the day and it runs fine. It will occasionally (maybe 2-3 times a week) freeze up and need a battery pull, but it's fine otherwise.
But in the late evening, it will get weird. And there's no real key to what is setting it off. Sometimes it will start a boot loop around 12:30/1:00am but with a battery pull and reboot, it's fine until the next night. Sometimes it will start a boot loop around 6am and it's the same thing. I will occasionally have to try a few times to get it to quit looping, but it seems like once 8am rolls around, it quits.
I'm fairly certain this has to do with the fact I'm running custom ROMS, but what is it that is setting it off? I had this issue with CoreDroid and Honey SmartDroid. It was much worse with CoreDroid, and in reading through that massive thread, it was decided that it just didn't play well with a handful of phones. Some hardware issue. (which made me sad because I loved CoreDroid, but didn't want to risk my phone getting bricked since I'm out of warranty and too close to a renewel to pay the insurance claim) Honey SmartDroid didn't do it the first few nights, but then it started in.
I've tried changing my charging cable (I usually recharge at night, and thought that might be it) as well as not recharging at night. With both ROMs, I did a total wipe and re-installed, letting it run for a few days without any extra apps installed (except for a basic few, such as update to Facebook, Gtask, etc). Nothing that I can think of that changes any of my phone settings during those hours. It does it anyway.
I haven't tried running anything closer to stock ROM for more than a few hours because they honestly bore me now that I've seen how awesome of the other ones are. So I don't know if switching back would solve the boot loop issue. But if I need to do that to prevent damage to my phone, I will. I just want to know what's causing the boot loops and why only during those hours?
Thanks!
Have you tried formatting your sd card and full wipe and reflash rom. Also it is known that when a battery starts to go bad it makes the phone reboot several times on its own. Being it goes into bootloop at night when you are charging phone would give me the impression that the culprit would be the battery.

I haven't tried formatting the sd card. When I do that, do a do a new backup on that sd card? Or just put the ROM zip on the card and go from there? It might be the battery, I hadn't thought about that. I did consider that it might be the charging cable, but it will do it regardless of whether the phone is charging or not. The phone is about a year and a half old, so the battery could well be going on it.
Sorry don't want to sound mean but there is lots of threads that all have this issue with the "random" reboots or I have search all over the place but my "issue" is different.
Look up the title random reboots in this forums or PD98 IMG etc..
I'm sure you will find the issue before yet another reboot thread gets closed..again..

Do a nandroid backup then copy everything on your sd csrd to a folder on your computer then format the card. Then place rom on sd do a full wipe
1. factory wipe
2. cache wipe
3. advance> dalvik wipe
4. go back> wipe phone partitions (except sd card)
then flash rom see if that helps if you still have the issue then cheapest route would be replace battery which I think is your culprit. Good luck.
Your rom backup will be located in the clockworkmod folder in case you have any issues.

My apologies. I did try to do a search, but that vast majority of the results dealt with ROMs that I'm not running, boot loops that couldn't be stopped, or phones that I don't own. I honestly didn't see any that dealt with a phone that reboots only during certain hours. I understand how frustrating it is to have newbies constantly asking the same questions over and over, which is why I tried to avoid that. I will look up PD98 IMG and see where that gets me, as well as go through the threads from the other ROMs.
Thank you for your help.

Thank you so much for your detailed response. I'll give that a try tonight while I'm also researching the other threads I was told to go through. I'll let you know how it worked out.
No need to say sorry lol...your ok just hate so the new ones get cyber yelled at by some mod and close your thread and not getting your answer.
But even though it maybe not be for the rom that your running but also check out the Q&As of those Roms.
And also I know the htc inspire thread for ROMs is always on top of the game here but just letting you know as well Desire HD forums is I would say you should go for the most recent ROMs and updates etc.. And yes Desire HD can be used for the Htc Inspire so thats where Im at for the most part..
But if you ever get a boot loop form a rom you flash make sure you fully wipe (sorry just funny every time.you will see what I mean) from rom to rom unless other wise...If you still happen to have the PD98IMG file still on your sd card happens when you 1st root and for get that its there delete I use Es File Explorer to find whats on the sd card there are others astro file manager. Also This happen to me once when I flash scripts, gps fix, kernels then the rom that I was going to use and it just totally F'd my phone or re boots random or just gets stuck on the htc screen..
But I had made this post for another user (new) maybe this may help:
So this is an idea of what I do when I flash a rom and some other ideas/tips.
Getting Started or Flashing A Rom:
Once you root your phone (this is not in any order really) you should get ROM Manager aka Clock Work Mod. Once you get that, open the CWM and the first top half you will see flash clockworkmod recovery make sure your on wifi I would at least for the updates. You will see a dialog box click desire hd. This will allow you to make back ups of your settings that you made when you flash a rom its always a good idea to make your backups its a life save!! So, once you made your back up and this is what I do.. I plug in my phone to the pc switch to disk mode which will let you see whats on your sd card. Since you flash the CWM and recovery you will see on your sd card a folder called clockworkmod open then backups folder you will see you back that you made, drag and drop that backup file that you made to your fold that you made on pc to save it for later. And thats pretty much how I save my backups of roms etc.. Now if you need to load that back up just plug phone in disk mode cwm fold>backup drag and drop back up that you need. And boot into recovery mode and select back up and restore and select restore and the file boot and your good..
I would download which Rom I would like to use. Save it to pc to a folder that I have made that I store all my roms, backups, radios & rils, kernels..etc.. just to keep myself organized. Once you get your rom just drag and drop it to the ROOT of the sd card do NOT add it in any folder thats on the sd card. Once you have it on the card just boot into recovery flash your rom.. Other then that its easy to flash the rom.. And when you get all your settings set up make a back up and when done save it to the pc and delete it from the sd card if you dont want to keep on the card I do that..
When it comes to battery life it depends on what the rom.. But I like to use killers http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ht=killersolth scripts for the kernels.. For me I always flash a different kernel upon flashing a new rom. For me having the kernel and killers script is the best combo for me to have for performance and battery life.. now since I have inspire I use the uv lites scripts.
For the most part flashing radios & Rils you would never really need to do that so I wouldnt recommend it for now maybe later but read about it its good to know what it does..
Other sides which I for got to add.. When you flash a new rom its always good to wipe user data.,cache, delvik it makes it for a good clean install with other roms..
Also the desire HD thread which the inspire can use the roms from that thread to.
Well I hope this helps you in any way.. if you need help PM me best of luck
SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG POST HAHA
Sooooooooo if you had ?s about Roms or Scripts,GPS not locking on after rom flashing,KERNELS (are my fav) let me know PM me

[Q] Wiping Data wont wipe data.

So I am going to type out my story so that nothing is missed. I really wanna fix my phone.
*I started out a regular user. Saw TWEAKED 3.0BETA and give it a try. When the final release came out I put it on no problem.
*YESTERDAY My phone tried to update facebook, got an error like "wrong file size" or something stupid, it crashed and I could care less.
*THIS MORNING I wake up and I had a text message from my GF with a picture attached, I couldn't see the picture like normal and downloading it downloaded a blank file!
*SO, I decided to BOOT into CWM and erase everything. Wipe Data. Wipe Cache. Wipe Delvik. Then proceeded to put in Tweaked 3.1 which came out not to long ago.
*After doing so, the phone would boot into where it normally would, but then the "first start wizard" would crash and force close, along with every other process on the phone looping their crashes over and over etc.
*SO, this time I tried using ODIN to flash back to 4D. Set it up just like IMNUTS post said to, including the PIT file, did it, and booted up. SAME THING. Every process would crash including the new user wizard.
After letting it crash loop for while it finally got silent enough for me to skip the wizard and see whats on the phone. ALL MY OLD APPS ARE STILL THERE. Pandora, and all my other apps, still installed, and apparently, CRASHING upon its boot use or whatever.
What do I need to do. Ive tried to ODIN flash every stock version of the charge rom and my apps are still there. Still kicking.
Worst part is months ago my mother (who I share the family plan with) had to cancel the warranty because we are all low on cash, and even worse I lost my job 2 weeks ago so I can't get a new phone.
HELP!!!! Thanks in advance!

but as far as odin goes, I checked the box that said re-partition. I followed IMNUTS post down to the letter, all my apps are still there.

yes, make sure it says "unmount" after you choose those options...
CWM for the charge sometimes has troubles and need a little help
get going. did you have a *.pit when you selected re-partition? it
wont do anything unless you have a *.pit file...
I know it's not good to hotlink so I will give you the page link as well
as the link itself (as there are TONS of choices)

yes. I know on the EVO you needed to format a couple of times to make sure that CWM actually formatted correctly.
So you might wanna try that. also did you try going to
Privacy -> Factory data restore option?
mind you I think you do need the stock recovery option to do that but I know that works well.
Just ODIN a stock recovery.. it shouldn't touch any custom items you might have.

I can't get into the phone, it wont get past the setup wizard. all the applications force close over and over and over again. i did however use the factory recovery mode to wipe and that did nothing either....
I just set it to "unmount" on both the data and system and now im wiping. I remember when I first started with this after wiping once with CWM the next few times wouldn't take long at all because there was nothing to wipe....
so i did as you said with the data and system, wiped it, and nothing, damn crap still there.
it literally wont erase it

can you find a "clean" stock ROM and flash it and then wipe data through CWM and then go into the OS and wipe?
let me see if i cannot come up with something to wipe for you

you MUST install an OS after you use this or you will boot loop into recovery.
this purges everything in the phone. (Non-recursively deletes)
I haven't tried this on mine as I am beta testing... but what can it hurt for yours?

Flash that in CWM (I assume it's a CWM zip? Didn't bother to check) and flash Tweaked 3.1 full CWM afterwards. Have both on the card ready to go.
Edit: oops I meant 3.2 not 1
Edit 2: nope, definitely meant 1. What am I doing this morning?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
have that CWM zip and another installation ready to go on the root of the SDCard.
flash the wiper and then install the OS
doesn't matter what ROM you have...
Did that zip work?

haven't tried yet. i was given samsung pst so im trying that atm. afterwards as a last resort ill use what you mentioned.
okay, so i did it. put on cwm, both tweaked 3.1 rom and that wipe all file on the sd card. booted it up. ran the wipe file. then ran tweaked. booted up, and it stuck at the samsung logo. then i figured it was wiped, so i went and hooked it up for odin and put EP4D on it again so i can get fresh, and as soon as i got in all my apps were there, and everything was crashing one process after another.
i think the phone is borked and non recoverable.
Did you happen to mount the /system and /data first as previously mentioned?
That should have forcefully removed everything. Also on a normal basis (if not using a PIT) it won't erase /data ... it never has for me anyways.
How much time does it give you when you get the FC's until it happens again (the FC) can you try
To manually uninstall? ( Applications -> Manage Applications and then deleting then one by one? Or take titanium backup and run a batch to delete the applications in one go....
I'm sorry, I'm just trying to figure this out and help you the best way possible.

Also have you tried a non rooted ODIN? With a PIT?

Need Help

I had just downloaded the latest firmware to upgrade to lolipop, I did a titanium backup, then a nandroid with TWRP.
Upon reboot I can only get to the default recover screen (The one with the android on the skateboard). I can boot into TWRP and have tried clearing cache and delvik cache, and now doing a factory reset but I'm still having the problem. sometimes when rebooting from TWRP the phone boots to the lock screen (or to setup screen after factory reset), then a few seconds later reboots back to the screen with the android on the skateboard.
I haven't even started installing the new firmware, all I did was backup with TWRP and it seems to have semi bricked the phone.
I also tried restoring the backup and I get an error "E:\ No Partition selected for restore."

You flashed twrp either by twrp manager or allowed flashify to download the image for you. Try flashing the firmware zip I posted in tigerstowns thread that has twrp in it. If that doesn't work you will need to ruu and then install twrp and restore. Do not use twrp manager.

I beleive I flashed twrp origionally from fastboot, that was months ago though when we got the 4.4.4 update.
Do you mean I need to flash that zip from fastboot?
I'm worried about trying to flash firmware with the phone in a strange state. I'm almost thinking that something went bad inside the phone, but not convinced yet. It has been doing strange things lately, constant searching for location, pausing itself durring playback of music, and some random restarts. I haven't been messing it it so it seems strange to all of a sudden have these issues after many months.

Nah man. Just reflash the firmware zip that contains twrp and report back. The older twrp are not safe to use on the newer firmware. I have a pda thread stickied in the general section that explains. Phone is likely fine.

Ok, yea, I flashed the new firmware (with twrp) using fastboot , I'm still stuck on the same screen though. I did not install lolipop because I need to get the phone to USB mode to copy it over, which I cannot do because it will not start up.

Ok...so follow me...if you flashed what you thought was cache on the new firmware but using an older twrp you wiped system instead.
Do you have your stuff backed up?

I don't know, I made a nandroid to my external memory card and immediately after that I was no longer able to start up... I tried to restore the nandroid and I cannot. So I would say no I am probably not backed up. I do still have RDKN rom on the memory card for 4.4.3, should I try to re-install that?
TWRP is now version 2.8.5.0, so apparently it updated correctly (I think before it was 2.8.1)

No. Your best bet to get your stuff back would be to downgrade firmware back to 4.4.4 and reflash the latest twrp img only and then restore your nand.

Ok my internet is not working on my laptop at work (only of the PC I'm on and no way to transfer files without my phone), so I guess I will try to do this when I get home. At this point I don't even care about my data, I wanted to save my text conversations but other than that everything I need should be saved in my titanium backup.

And that's what I figured. So flash 4.4.4. Flash latest twrp. Restore nand from ext sd. Boot up. Install this app.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934537937
Run it and link to your Google account and make it perform a backup.
It will do your apps/email accounts/texts/even home screen layout. And it will do it once a day for you automatically or on demand whenever.
Once you get a good backup on this app you can simply flash the new ruu and use this app to restore.

Update, restarted the computer and I was able to restore the old firmware. I re-installed the old rom afterwards (not my nandroid) and I am unable to get into the OS. Well technically I get prompted to select a language, after which the phone reboots back to the S-off androids with skateboards bootloader. Does this mean my phone is toast?
Hey guys, should I S-on the phone load the stock bootloader and try to return it? It is over a year old so I think I will need to use my insurance ($100). What is the best way to go about doing this?
Also when I get my replacement phone will there still be a way to S-off?
Thanks,
- Jusitn
The problem appears to be something wrong with my micro SD card! I removed the micro SD card and I can boot up fine. I guess I need to find another way to copy the rom to the micro SD install the rom then remove the micro SD card.
edit:
Oh this is worse than paying $100 for a new phone. It appears that creating a backup instead of creating a backup, actually corrupted my memory card. Now all the photos are backed up to the cloud but it will take me hours and hours to get all my apps back to the way they were. Some Security camera settings, Rifle target hand load development all gone. Audio book place holders, all notes taken etc. Nothing life or death but those security cameras will take me forever to figure out. I know I know, why not create a backup right? Well that's what I was trying to do!
So I was able to get back some data using some recovery software, unfortunately I was not able to retrieve the nandroid or the titanium backup files. Pictures were backed up to the could and music licenses and other hting I can add back on from the PC. Very time consuming though.
Anyways, what should I do now? Should I just reformat the SD card and continue to use it or should I assume that this happened because the card is bad and replace it with something else?

I don't know what file system you're using but assuming it's one that windows can read, connect it to a PC and run chkdsk on it. If you don't know how to do that from a command prompt, right click on the drive in windows explorer and choose properties. Then tools and then click on the check now button under Error-checking. A small window will open. A line that says automatically fix file system errors will be checked by default. In your case, I'd suggest also checking the line that says "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". It'll take a while for it to complete with that line checked so be patient. If you're lucky, it might just fix your problem. No promises but it's worth a try.
When it's done you can look in your event viewer to see what it found, if anything. If it finds bad sectors, I wouldn't trust the card. It can be used but there's no guarantee that more problems won't pop up. Maybe, maybe not.
To get to your event viewer, in Win 7 (not sure about Windows 8) click start and in the search box type event.vwr. I'm not sure what category you have to look under in there but perhaps under Winlogon. That's where you'll find it if it requires a reboot to check the card but that's not likely so I'm not sure.

exFat for the card, and yes I am on windows 7. I tried to run a check as it was detected as having problems when I plugged the card into my laptop. Then it said I needed to dismount the drive and I said ok. Then it would just hang up. I reformatted the card and then ran the checkdisk again and it tells me that there are no problems now. I guess the card is ok and the issue was caused by TWRP? Not very cool when creating a back delete all your titanium backups and your nandroid that you were trying to create. Unfortunately I have to start from scratch on everything now. I even tried restoring to an older nandroid from May that was saved on my computer but that failed as well. for different reasons.

What reason did the restore fail for? And don't ever s-on unless you have let me have a crack at a phone. Not one thing you have said so far makes me think its phone. Unfortunately I have ended up with corrupt exfat discs before too. Sucks.
