Howdy Hank, and Welcome. MOST devs will ask that you please read the guides and search thru what become diluted and crappy threads. Avoid Techie Litter and READ Mr. Clowns One stop Inspire Guide - in the Forum Inspire 4G Android Development - you'll want to bookmark it. There is a lot of repetition, so I can paste the best and most vital below.) and search so that you would avoid re-creating already answered threads. From what I gather and experienced, it is very repetitious and annoying answering our simple questions - its a puzzle we havent pieced together, and its on us to do that. After being somewhat literate in the geekspeak (sorry DevS!!) and you start getting more relevant inormation processed and formatted in your own Hard drive -BRAIN- You begin formulating more specific and pertinent questions. Until then, if and if and when you get an answer, the word or incomplete sentence they respond with is to encourage searching, again. - Your problem is most likely NOT unique. Informed and Deliberate SEARCHING and READing before asking is vital. YOU need to know and understand what you are doing. I Did Not. I found out the hard way.... also be sure to post all threads in appropiate section, no double posting.
We have some great developers on our forum, and the Moderator -Mr. Clown- DOES CLEAN HOUSE.
Hi Mr. Clown! Anyone ever told you how utterly freaky your profile pic is?
Finally, when your in exasperation, because you did not listen to that little voice in your head (or developer within) - and if you cant find your answer after SEARCHING - its probably a viable question. with that said....
I will post a link or two at the bottom for you. From what I gather, especially until you have some experience flashing (make a Nandroid backup everytime!!!) It would be best to stick with your stock radio. One of the most finnicky parts of rom management is flashing radios, and without a successful flash, your looking at a 500$ paperweight. Each device, (Inspire) is the same yet also different. The radio that JimBob uses and loves, may scrabble your signal and/or cause battery issues, connectivity issues etc... Dont get too caught up in maximizing the performance of your device, as simply rooting your phone and installing almost any kustom Rom/Kernal will all but increase performance to maximum. (Edit - soon you'll learn about over and under clocking... THINK SPEED!)
Flashing radios is one of the more dangerous and somewhat advanced manuevers you can perform. Proceed with caution. Did I mention you must be rooted, with S-Off, and no fewer than a buttload of worries and clicks and blah blah later, you may possibly experience better signal/battery etc. However - you can also dramatically decrease performance, and or Brick your device. I cannot stress this enough. I took these admonitions with somewhat of a lackadaisical (carefree) attitude, and many deep breaths and fingers crossed later - have learned to appreciate how much more BadA$$ my device is just being rooted, and breaking those stock parameters... YOUR PHONE IS SMART - DO NOT BE STUPID.
If you really really must flash a radio, you will also need the corresponding RIL code for said radio. Some come packaged with the radio, not all do. I only began looking earnestly into radios over the last couple of weeks, and the results were varied, but none performed better than stock. Remember a radio must be in PD98IMG.zip format or installation will be aborted. Before I climb down off my pedestal of recently acquired knowledge, let me say some of the links and the threads and info posted can often sound appealing - but lead to some pretty Pre 3G performance and worse. Sometimes there are alternatives and occasionally things will sound contradictory, However the devs usually find common ground and work together to keep everything streamlined and portaled. No. Ported. I think.
Some folks prefer the 50 click/usb debug/ abkpush method by RogerRabbitt whilst others prefer a different, easier(?) yet still (often) HIT and MISS flash from recovery... Best Way - Boot into Recovery, and Manage things yourself. You know its wiped, flashed, if not flashed - why, etc. And lets face it, the geek factor is pretty damn cool. Controlling your phones operating system is Extremely Fragile territory, but you'll feel awesome when whooing the ladies with your new P.C. slang.
"HI I am Dyliho, and Your Amazingly Beautiful...What do you say you give me SuperUser Permissions - and I Root that StockRom you've got, then I can flash your Kernal with MY Uploaded Zip, and really get you going..."
Take this with a grain of salt - but I found a method where simply renaming your radio download to 98PDIMG.zip, and placing it to the root of your sd card (sd/), then power off, then holding vol. down THEN power and hold which brings you into bootloader. As it will do everytime, it searches for the PD98IMG.zip, only this time finds it (you just created it and put it on the root of your SD) - and it takes over and you follow directions - yields seemingly flawless results (as far as flashing is concerned) and avoids some pretty scary things I have read about PermaBricks. ALWAYS CHECK MD5 SUM TO ENSURE NO FILES WERE CORRUPTED DURING TRANSFER/DOWNLOAD BEFORE YOU FLASH. Before you Flash. AGAIN - before you flash verify... The md5 sum when matching Devs md5 sum is verification the file is complete. A RADIO MUST BE WHOLESOME AND CLEANLY TRANSFERED/DOWNLOADED. Other Stuff is fixable (generally) or just wont flash, but no harm no foul.... A failed radio boot you can't recover from they say. I dont want to know. Three radios flashed for me yielded horrible results with signal and battery for One, while the ATT Radio and New Update seem to yield the same statistics. Its only 48 hours into this ATT Update though, as I said before, I have messed up. You do not need ENG S-Off, only A rooted phone with S-Off to flash the radio. Please sir, READ READ READ and put the pieces together yourself, and check comments frequently. I WISH YOU LUCK, and if you inform yourself, you should be Fine.zip
Oh Yeah!! The Rom I Married is MiUI. A brand new stable release can and will be dropping any moment. Try it, I LOVE IT. Some hate it, too much of an iOS look, iphone may be inferior, but aesthetics is the one of the most yet also least amazing things about this Rom. Performance is AMAZINGLY Awesome, using Cyano#6 by Cattleprod, a devoted kernal tweaker - and the Inspire Support for MiUI by Symonc is Top-Notch. The guy is literally bombarded with posts and he is quick to help and usually has the fix, if he hasnt already answered it twice. STOCK radio in my opinion was made for this Rom (not factually, every device is different to an extent, remember that.) Aside from speed and potential Phone Frying Performance + a thousand other awesome features, MiUI has the guilt free bonus of Not Accepting Donations. Though I dont guess they would kill you if you did...
My Radio was stock 12.19.xx.xx.30.06.04.06(?) And now I have the OTA Update by either Att or HTC. 26.06.06.06(?) ----->(never do Over The Air Updates for stock software, I found a radio_update someone posted, and used the download link. remember - you've been rooted!!)<------

The Last 48 hours I spent Optimizing my phone to Holy Batman and back to soft brick, somehow frying or damaging my SD card - and finally - back to a glorious example of superb performance. Its all bare bones too, save for (that awesome developers name here) Tinny Audio Fix for Inspire and Desire HD.
Oh yes --- and all Desire HD (HD) files should be perfectly compatible with INSPIRE. THERE. now I AM DONE. Once you find your Rom/Kernal combo Stick with it. I tried out that ROM with the suggested radio. I ran it for @4 days. I couldn't keep a good signal around town and I could never get a solid gps lock. I went back to stock radio and MIUI. You will probably get more answers if you ask the question in the thread about the ROM so everyone using the ROM sees your question.

Attempted to ask ?? in ROM thread but being new to site it wouldn't let me...Got message I didn't have at least 10 posts on site so I couldn't reply in the thread...
Anyways, thanks for the info on ur experience w/ the ROM. Just Rooted my phone bout an hour ago & was looking for a ROM to flash & thought I would try this one. All of this is new to me so I am taking BABY steps.
Thanks dyliho!

Trust me man, it is No problemo. I did not take baby steps, and went a day several times working through worthless threads, erring on the side of caution. Then when I got it running again - I dove back in. I just got it back to badass - and the great thing is I am only running MIUI and Cattlprods Cyano Kernal with the OTA updated radio, and the ever needed Tinny Audio fix by that other awesome dude...
There are lots of things people do to make thier Inspires Inspiring. The developers wind up incorporating these to a great extent into thier work, making it easy for you. And when you download a rom, link the thread - developers really enjoy and need the CRITICAL input... the noob onslaught that tires them. Thank them, and show your love by donating if/when possible. Youll learn to love it, if you dont already. MiUI, its gonna be ready.soon, if not now(?!)
Get ready.to have a completely customized user interface (if you desire) and amazing performance at an amazingly reliable and small package. Bigger is not always better on Android...

Dyliho must be a politician; in all his rambling he didn't really truly answer your specific questions very well and I'm not sure he's even used the ROM you are specifically asking about. But his posts do contain unsolicited info on forum rules, conflicting reasons on why you should and shouldn't flash a radio, some blurbs about MIUI and symonc, and something about being lackadaisical.
You asked for feedback, so here is mine. As you may know, TPGB-CM20110509 is a Gingerbread ROM based on CM7 build 61. The recommended radio (26.06.06.30) is the new radio that was pushed to the stock Inspire ROMs at the end of April. I've used this radio on TPGB-CM20110509 and CM7 build 69, and this radio is performing very well. The matching Radio Interface Layer (RIL) for this radio is HTC-RIL_2.2.0079HM, which was also pushed out to the stock Inspires at the same time as the radio. I've had very good results with this RIL, as well as the RIL that now comes with CM7 (HTC-RIL_2.2.0099HM). My battery life has never been better. As with a lot of custom ROMs, my GPS totally sucked, but using the GPS fix mentioned in my sig fixed this issue (GPS now locks in under 5 seconds outdoors, 7-15 seconds indoors). Speeds are also great with my APN fix applied (see sig). So my recommendation is to definitely try out this radio. If you need any help or instructions feel free to PM me. I'm also still fully supporting my APN thread in the Dev section if you have any issues with that.
@henrybravo a smidge off-topic but which gps fix did you flash? I flashed North America and I was curious if you are having better results using just the area you are located.

I don't plan on traveling outside of my region in the near future so I just flashed the region specific file - in my case it is GPSFIX_SouthMidState.V1.2.zip. I haven't flashed the overall North American fix, how is that one working out for you?

Bravo Henry Bravo, you have scrutinized my flawed intro to the man. No reason to be a hater. People left the dude hanging... This is the most wordy thread I have seen in quite a long time. Dyliho, I can't read your posts. Way too wordy. I'm sure you are trying to help but, God man. Or are you a woman. That might explain it actually.
I have used 26_06_06_30_M radio in about 7 different ROMs and it has been the best for me. Maybe give it a try. I live in Central Pennsylvania.
Thanks to All Who Have Replied
Thanks every1. From the long 2 the short replies, I gleened valuable info from each. Yes, I am a noob & was glad 2 recieve all info I did in this thread.
Was successful in Rooting my phone & installed the GingerBeast ROM last night as a place to start. Just Flashed it & nothing more at this time. Will play w/ it later 2day & c how everything goes.
Ultimately do want to try the TPGB-CM20110509 ROM, but was concerned bout the Recommended Radio being different than mine & GingerBeast utilized mine so I felt more comfortable trying it for the 1st go round.
Again, going at it slow & reading/learning as much as I can b4 trying things.
Appreciate any & all help.

Build Number: ECLAIR.UCJH7
I have visited the ROM section and I probably dont need to tell you that it is just a little bit confusing (for me anyway)as to which ROM to use.
I would like to flash a new ROM to bring me up to FroYo and I "think" I want to use the Andromeda ROM. I have a couple of questions though.
First, (for the Devs) should I go ahead and flash to FroYo or wait for am Android 3.0 ROM (assuming one is forthcoming)?
Second, is the difference between the "themed" and "un-themed" ROM just cosmetic? Do they both function the same?
There are a few "how to" threads on flashing. They are very detailed and take you step by step. I'd suggest you read or watch the videos.
The questions about Andromeda are well covered in the thread. You just need to read through it. Flashing now or waiting is purely up to you. There's not a GB ROM that's stable enough to run day to day. There's only one that I know of and they are still working a lot of problems out of it.
Thank you.

Yep, just prettier (in some cases that is).
I'm really looking for a ROM that is as close to "stock" Froyo as possible that will work well with my U.S. phone. I understand Cognition is built on the just released Rogers build, but should I use a Canadian build on my U.S. phone?
I'm using Cognition and find it really nice. No Canadian phrases coming out of it.
If you are going to flash your first rom make sure you read through the forums and figure your what you need to do. Everything that you need are in them. I just flashed my first rom this weekend. Forums are very helpful!!

Serendipity 5.x is by far the best Captivate ROM out there, in my opinion. Fast, clean, stable, bloat-free, and tastefully themed.
I just flashed the un-themed version of Andromeda, needless to say I was and am still very pleased with it. It was my first time flashing a ROM and went very smoothly, I guess I just got sick of AT&T jerking around.
I might make a quick video comparing Andromeda 1.0 on the captivate to a stock captivate (my bro's). That is if there is any interest in one.
Btw does any one know when the over clocked kernels will be released, I'm pretty anxious to try them out.
How do you like Andromeda? I started with cognition, then used phoenix for a while and liked both of them. I switched to serendipity last week and it has been rock solid to be honest, but I am always wanting to tinker with this thing. I flashed the KNP1 modem today to see if I get the better data speeds people are reporting and am hoping to gain a little battery life.
I guess everybody has thier own favorite ROM. I am kind of leaning toward either Cognition or Phoenix but cant decide which one. I want as close to "stock" 2.2 (or 2.3) as possible and it looks like Cognition might be the way to go. I have read through the Cognition Wiki and cant determine which flavor of Android (2.2/2.3) Cognition 3.04 is based on (unless I missed it). Anyone know?

I read through the guide "Guide for choosing the right rom for YOU" that you link to in your sig; and i see nothing about choosing the right ROM For me.
The title suggests that there is a guide to choosing a ROM - maybe a matrix of features, or a questions list to help someone decide. Instead the closest thing i find is one sentence "Go to the Android Development Section and read through different [ROM] threads to see what features will work best for you. I have also found it useful to read through the last couple of pages to see what other users think about the current version of the rom"
Did i miss something? Where is the guide to choosing the right ROM for me?

I agree. Something like "answer these 20 questions and here's the ROM that most matches what you want" would be great. I am still trying to figure it out.
What I am looking for is, if AT&T (or Samsung for that matter) were to finally release FroYo, here is what it would most likely look like and how it would probably perform. I'm still thinking Cognition is the closest since it was based on the Canadian FroYo release but *MAN* can it be confusing.

The point of that is so that you figure out what is best for you, not that I am telling you what to do. I am simply trying to GUIDE new users on how to go about making informed decisions on which ROM they choose. Too many people rely solely on what others say instead of trying things for themselves, which is why I created that post encouraging people to discover new things.
If you have questions about a certain rom, post in the ROM thread in the dev section. If you don't have 10 posts yet and still have questions, then post in the Q&A section, not captivate general.
What I don't think new users understand is that almost every person has a different preference about what ROM, kernel and modem combo work best. Me personally, I love di11igafs ROMs, but many other people prefer different things. Its pretty much like asking a group of random people, "what is the best car on the market and what options would get with said car?" Almost everyones answer will vary slightly.

Like you, I recently started trying to figure this out after getting an AT&T Captivate and I agree about the need for a better listing for features (or lack of) for each ROM. A good matrix to compare would be nice, but I fear there are so many people working on these things and it all moves so fast, it would be a full-time job just to keep it up. Reading through all this stuff is quite overwhelming. However, I honestly think it's not bad once you figure out the basics and understand the ropes. By the time you get the things to load on your phone, with Clockworkmod Recovery, Odin and some other tools, life is pretty simple--the devs have done all the hard work, you're just flashing the stuff and figuring out what you like best.
Here is what I can tell you that may help and like I said, I'm pretty new at this, so someone *please* correct me if I'm wrong. I would not want to mislead anyone:
1. Cognition is an "Americanized" version of the Rogers 2.2 Captivate release. If you want 2.2.1 you have to use another custom ROM. Everything with Cognition appears to be well done, stable and smooth. I spent a couple hours trying to get wireless tether to work only to figure out MobileAP is built in and works
2. Look up the videos on YouTube by MobileTechVideos. They are very good and well produced, plus he looks at all the different ROMs. There is a 3-part video on loading Cognition on a captivate. I used it to load 3.04 on mine in almost real time right with the video. The only thing I would caution you on is if you use Titanium Backup to restore apps, be careful about "select all" like he says you can do in the video. I'm not sure if I had backed up system data and accidentally restored it or what--didn't go back that far to check, but after I did my restore I thought everything was fine and I could not make outgoing calls the next day. I reloaded from scratch following the videos again and this time use TB to restore one app+data at a time and was very picky about what I did and it worked wonderfully.
3. Once I got everything working I started to get curious about kernels. Once you have your ROM loaded, you can flash a new kernel (has to be same version as the ROM) and you can get enhancements with speed and other things by doing so. However, I loaded Firebird and did not notice in the thread that Bluetooth doesn't work yet, so I'm trying to figure out if I can go back or if I have to start over. Not a big deal to start over since I know what I'm doing now, just want to push the limits a little cause that's how I roll For some reason after Firebird I also seen duplicate photos on my SD card, even though there were only singles. It's like thumbnails were duplicated or something. I moved the pics off to my PC and it left blank thumbnails behind. I deleted them from the gallery and put the pics back and everything cleared up. I've seen stranger things--no biggie.
4. Battery life was fairly bad at this point, dropping 10-15% or more per hour. My phone came with the JH7 modem (last digits of your Baseband version in Settings -- About Phone). Cognition 3.04 comes with JL1 and many others were reporting great battery life with JL2 so I flashed it and everything seems to be much better so far. I haven't reset the battery stats and such, but I will at some point. Looks like a lengthy process that may or may not help.
5. I see a lot of "do I have to flash to stock first" questions posted and from what I understand, it's best practice to follow the instructions and don't ask why--just do it. Learn how to backup and restore apps+data (not system data) using TB and it's no big deal.
6. I read a lot about different builds of the Captivate--lots of posts about 1006, 1007, 1008's so I was concerned about the issues discussed. I'm guessing these were the early releases. I got mine at the end of January and it's a 1012. Look under your battery right under the serial number.
I suppose once I have this part of it working well and figured out, I will probably start looking into themes and digging deeper. It's pretty addictive so once you start, you just keep wanting more and more and making it better and better. Thanks to all the devs out there. I plan on making a few donations soon, especially to Designgears since his stuff is mostly what I've worked with so far.
My advice is to take a day or two and read *A LOT*. The old carpenters saying is "Measure twice and cut once" and that is pretty much how I look at this stuff. After you figure out how the puzzle pieces fit together, you lose the fear.
Hope this helps and if I would appreciate it if someone more advanced can confirm my statements or correct me.
so I need some closure here! After I upgraded from eclair to froyo (2.2.1) using Kies, after rooting my phone via SOC. I pushed my SGS I5000 to 2,500 on the benchmark (antutu, slightly above the HTC desire's benchmark score) and lanpack I hit nearly 18 one time (overclocking using tegrak 13.5 ghz) and I have not even got halfway close to what my phone can do! It can be frustrating at time's if i may say so!! I ran the pc monitor and the advanced task killer to smooth out my frame rate's and all that junk. The question of the day for you guy's is can anyone give me clean and clear directions to flash the voodoo kernel. I downloaded the otb reloaded zip file to my sd card, but the problem that occured is when I go into recovery mode it fails. So how exactly can I get this done and be happy? XD
I started a post, and deleted it. It just sounded too condescending, and that's not cool. So I'll try to be brief instead ((aaaand fail, long post warning, LOL)). XD
By way of correction, note that your phone model is SCH-I500, assuming your have the Samsung Mesmerize from US Cellular. Note also that a couple different phones bear that model number: the Samsung Fascinate form Verizon, and the Samsung Showcase from Cell South. So, referencing an SCH-I500 may or may not refer to any of those phone models. That's mostly just academic though.
Stickied at the top of the Mesmerize General forum, you'll find the thread titled:
[GUIDE] Newbie's Step-by-Step: From Stock USCC Mesmerize -> Custom Rom/Kernel
This walks you through customizing your phone step-by-step.
BUT BE WARNED! A lot of people rush through things, skip a step by accident, and brick their phones. This is NOT something to be attempted without a fairly strong degree of patience. It is highly recommended to read the thread, read it from the top once more, and read it a third time. Be sure you are very familiar with the process and follow the steps exactly, or you can end up with, as I've heard it it put, a Mesmerize-shaped paperweight. There are also instructions for how to get your phone back to stock Froyo linked in that thread.
I'm kinda bombarding you with warnings because it's really easy to get yourself in over your head and do it wrong. I did it myself the first few times, and yes, I did use the "How to get your phone back to stock" instructions. Back your data up however you can, just in case you need to flash back to stock.
Advice and warnings out of the way, the Guide thread I linked above is the way to do it. I personally really like MIUI; any of the AOSP ROMs are VERY fast, you'll definitely be impressed by the benchmarks. Pair those with a kernel that lets you overclock (know that they can potentially drain your battery faster by overclocking), and you can have a SCREAMING fast phone, which sounds like what you're after. I think I've even seen a 300% increase over stock Quadrant scores, but you'll hear people tell you that Quadrant isn't all that accurate. Still. *shrug*
Hope that helps!
Lastly, if I might take a moment to toot my own horn, check out the Mesmerize Glossary linked in my signature--it should go over pretty much all the terms you might come across around the forums here.
Good luck! Let us know how things go!
magnifique! MIUI v8 look's amazing! (not jocking your ROM lol) but nonetheless its superior to the other one's (yes I did take the painstaking time out to try each and everyone that I could) but it was well worth it! thank the android god's for creating XDA!! XD and thank you for the remarkable reply!
I've been in the Development forum and the threads are sometimes over 400 pages. I was wanting to see a more concise thread on what you're using. Specifically the ROM, the kernel, the radio, etc. If you're having any issues please add them and let me know how the ROM is working for you. I'm interested in a few different ROMs, but chosing which kernel and radio to get them to work properly is a pain to find in the 200-400 page threads.
Most of us rep our current ROM and kernel in our sigs. I personally tried to link the radio too, but the URL was too long.
As to the length of threads/ forums, you can refine your search to the current forum or thread you are on right above the thread/ post list at the right of the frame.
They tried doing this a few months back, doing reviews about roms and known bugs and such. It didn't get very far. While its a good idea, the very nature of roms is "change" so while a review might be valid and have the correct bugs, it could be invalid next week, due to update made to the rom. The best way to evaluate a rom your considering choosing, is reading the change log, and the last ten or more pages of the roms thread, that should give you an idea if any one is having any major bugs.
ROMs are based personally. Try them all then pick.

Maybe if the Roms stated "Final Version" on them you could pull this off. But None do.
After a lot of unhelpful replies, I'll respond to the question the person actually asked.
I'm using Lees Rom and Kernal and LOVE it. I settle on it after a friend told me it was his favorite and after trying about 4 other ROMs with crappy results.
It is loaded with features and it also has a patch to use Sense 3.0. I personally like Sense more than any custom attempts I have seen and 3.0 is worlds better than 2.x
I still have the stock radio because I can't seem to get it to update. I have been trying by renaming the radio img zip to P98img.zip (or whatever its called) and updating through the bootloader on the phone. But it always gives me an error parsing the package.
Only thing that worries me is that for some reason (the last few times I tried) I couldn't get into bootloader/recovery by holding volume- while booting. So if the phone ever gets locked up, I'm not sure how to recover. You can get into either through the custom power down menu though which is very cool.

And I'm sure you'll be back to update your post once those issues in Lee's ROM are resolved, or you figure out it wasn't the ROM fault, after all, or if you decide you don't like sense anymore, right?
That's what those "unhelpful" posts were trying to get across.
These things change. ROMs get fixed.
Sometimes users of ROMs pull their heads out of their ass' and figure out their problems were actually of their own creation, after they blamed the ROM.
So when a new user comes around a month from now, finds a best ROM post that has obsolete information, that new user will form an unfair opinion of what might now be (or always was) a great ROM.
Now *that's* unhelpful.

be sure you have Fastboot turned off in Applications.
Another thing you can do is download Quickboot from the market...then boot into bootloader from there. Quickboot>bootloader

Really? You call me unhelpfull for being honest yet you post and don't even post anything helpful. infact you noobed the whole post. You can't even flash a radio...Or figure out how to boot into recovery....Your Rom information is valueless. You should jump off your pedistal before you fall....Or someone pushes you....

I think it was that "alot of unhelpful replies" part that did it for me.
I'm not looking to find out what Rom is best, but to see what combinations of roms, kernels, and radios you guys are using. It's almost impossible to find an exact combo and even harder to dig thru the threads to see what people are using.
I browse a lot of threads, have only commented a few times. Been browsing for a couple years when I flashed different WinMo 6.5 roms on my ATT Fuze, as well as loading and running Android 2.1 and 2.2 from the SD card on the same phone. I will +1 some of the advice heard here so far:
Start by looking at threads where the ROM's have been updated recently (within the ten days for me). Check the change log to see if it's new features, upgrades, or bug fixes in the current updates. Or if it's a mix of it all, but look for things that interest you. Then, as stated earlier in this thread, check the last ten pages, at least the ones since the current update became available.
Also, it helps me to watch who is responding on the threads. Many users will became recognizable to you by name and avatar, and watch their post counts too. Lastly, check their signatures, most of the active senior members keep it updated with the information you are looking for. If they put it in the sig, it's because they are happy with what works and want to share it. Until the next thing better comes along.
PS, yes, I don't post a lot and yes I'm still on stock. Running dual OS's on my fuze was easy, don't feel comfortable yet pulling the trigger on my Inspire, but I'm off for the summer soon, more time to spend on it.

I know you don't want to look through the threads, but that is kind of the requirement. Every rom, kernel, and radio is going to work differently on every phone. It's like buying to exact same lap tops with the same exact os and programs, and with out doing any thing, the next day one of them crashes.
To be honest, and as helpful as I can, the only way is read the last few posts in the thread, to see if there is any major bugs. Then flash the rom, kernel, and or radio and test them out on your phone.

That's the the thing, though. There'll be at least one person running every possible combo out there.
One will say it's da bomb, another will say it froze his phone.

+1 and ditto
What is the main point/purpose/question of starting this thread?
You say you don't want to find the "best" rom (granted your thread title does have the word ROM in it).....so you are trying to find the best combo correct? (which still depends on what you are trying to get out of the combo)
........And like its been said.....really just look at the sigs and the more "serious" devotees will have their ROM and more info all written in the sig (which is a two-fold thing 1. it promotes the work 2. for these type of questions (to give a sort-of consensus)
But that doesn't necessarily mean it will solve whatever you are trying to get out of this thread.......
because everything changes so rapidly, you have to keep up......or basically find the "best" parts that you won't/don't change much (like radios, etc.) and find the one you like.......then focus on the changeables like Rom, etc. because your view on roms change more frequently than the others.
All these types of topics are very subjective....and takes reading to find a "decent" answer to your question.....in the end your surrounded by a great community (XDA)...but ultimately your alone
If you get what im saying...
You could do the popularity thing......see whats in the sigs, and do that
If it works good for you.....don't worry about whats "best/better".......because you won't know whats better, you will just know what is working good for YOU (which is all that matters)
Lastly....to "answer your question".....lol......read my sig :-D
Can anyone tell the important and practical advantages of rooting and installing Infused ROM? I Am just looking for a useful reason to waste my time
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Read the change logs in the very first post, if nothing there appeals to you than don't bother, if nothing makes SENSE to you, read more like I did before diving in lol.
Short answer is, because its fun, addicting, customizing, unlocks features, removes bloatware.....makes it YOUR PHONE, not AT&T's (assuming you don't have Rogers.) Things like Wi-Fi tethering and GPS lock on times are fixed or improved. Stuff like that, plus the whole process can be somewhat addicting. Lol
Infused
Hehe..... So, no usefulness in rooting I guess.... Can you post the link by the way...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Not sure how, on my phone. Lol, but if you go to the infuse developers section, you CANT miss it. Big huge title says something along the lines of, [Infused, V2.#.# (gingerbread) blah blah blah] haha.
But ATM the download portion is down because the Canadian release doesn't use 4g, so he's fixing a little quirk with it right now, than it'll be back up I'm sure, gtg is pretty quick.
Also, rooting is different than flashing a Tom, rooting gives you complete control over your phone, gets rid of market branding (I think), and allows 3rd party apps (be carefully)
Flashing a ROM is replacing the current operating system with the SAME one but streamlined and bareboned, or a better one that's streamlined and bareboned. (Or at least that's how I think of it.) Usually involving better apps, updates, and unlocked features.
So yes there is a benifit I guess lol.
Infused
So, what is infused ROM? I suppose it is custom ROM... Right?... So, what the hell is CWM then?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
All of this info is readily available, when I first got my android I was a little confused to, hell, I still am =P
But here is the skinny,
Root simply means you are granting the phone or yourself super user access. What does that mean you ask... well, it pretty much gives you ultimate admin rights. From here, you can theme, mod, install roms, alter/move/delete system files etc.
Roms are the creations of enhanced versions of the stock os all ready available, and sometimes not available ie gtg's gingerbread rom. The benefits to these"aftermarket" roms vary from rom to rom. You will need to research each one specifically to see what fits your desires.
Although your question seems simple, it its infact a big question that is far to vague, simply put, custom roms made by experienced developers will 99.9% always be superior to stock, but for different reasons. So please research and you will see that there are varying types of directions... Unless you want gb on infuse, kinds only one direction for that at the moment.
Infused with gingerbread **** thanks GTG465X
Thanks, you articulated my thoughts better lol.
CWM is ClockWorkMod, used commonly for its rom manager feature, it helps make flashing the rom's easier, and can install a clockwork recovery mode that replaces the stock 3e recovery the phone comes with, and is far more useful.
Infused
You need root. Normally I'd suggest going with a ROM, but right now the only ROM actively being developed is Infused. However, this is the first ROM where I have gotten very bad response from those who develop the ROM, as well as backlash for the community when I bring up bugs on the releases. Any other phone has developer communities that are helpful and very nice, and receptive to constructive criticism, but it's like Apple sent their goons over for Infused, and both the developers and the fanboys of the developers act like it's some gift from god. Everything released from the Infused team has had some fairly significant bugs, right now the bug is poor data speeds (kinda silly since we bought the phone for it's "4G" being the primary function), but as always, enter at your own risk.
Seriously bella? the only issues I have seen with this community has been antagonized by you. Hell, out of curiosity I check done of your post history... Surprise surprise, most of the post are you complaining. This thread case in point, seriously had to drag your bull **** to another thread, grow the hell up.
just get your sg2 already and take your negativity to another forum. All you ever do is ***** like a whiny baby. Good luck and good riddance, we won't miss you.
Infused with gingerbread **** thanks GTG465X
Krant, don't let Bella's bs confuse you, this phone has to notch devs, with fantastic roms and kernels. Apparently if the devs can't part the seas and build a rom that get 100 hours of staight heavy use batt life then they don't deserve to give us free development
Infused with gingerbread **** thanks GTG465X
Krant, welcome to the forums.
I disagree with Bella - we have an excellent community here, the only problem is that we have an unusual number of people who post in the ROM threads in development when it is clear they have not even read the first post of the thread. We also have people who complain about a ROM without any evidence to back up their complaint, and get hostile when a dev asks them to run a specific test.
On the positive side, the level of coordination we have between developers is FAR better than most other devices. That's why right now you don't really see any junky "hey look I can deodex too!" ROMs.
So far you're off to a good start, you didn't post in the dev forum and you're making an effort to learn. I suggest you take some time to do some research and Googling.
Another thing adding to the confusion here is that with Android, there are two portions of the system that can be separately customized. The kernel is the base operating system, with hardware drivers and such. The ROM is actually what us kernel hackers call "userland" - the stuff layered on top of a kernel to produce a nice usable system.
Most ROMs include a custom kernel, but in many cases you can flash other kernels over it.
Never flash a ROM/kernel intended for another device. (An exception to this rule may eventually come for userland ROMs, but for now that's the rule.)
CWM is a low-level "recovery" tool that allows new files to be flashed to your device that often can't be flashed to a running system. It's most often used for flashing new ROMs, but can sometimes be used for flashing tweaks to a ROM.
And things like that will only scare people away from these forums, i sincerely feel like there are an alarming number of negative, rude people on XDA, and those who AREN'T, are usually Dev's or working with them, Hence my post from like, a month ago in an ENTIRELY different subject lol. And also why i try so hard to be informative, even with what little knowledge i have. please dont go because of a few bad apples, ive seen it ruin peoples experience with there phones.

the raffman explained root acces well indeed. I heard another explain it as gaining root access to your phone is the same as logging in to your computer with admin rights; you can make all sorts of changes. However, not having root access to your phone is like logging in to your computer as guest; you can change very little.
I rooted my phone a few days out of the box. Don't get me wrong; I was impressed with its performance. Since then I've flashed roms, kernels, bricked my phone, brought it back to life with odin3 many times. It is exciting and wicked fun to push this phone to its limits. Props to all the devs that enable my habit. Root and flash and I am sure you will never look back.

Entrophy512,
I've had my superInfuse for over a month now, I have it rooted, flashed Infused 1.53, 2.0Beta1,2,3,stable2.00, 2.01, 2.02 and used CWM, SGS Kernal Flasher, etc. I thought I understood this all pretty well but you summed it up excellently!!! Thanks so much for that!
hi and welcome to another round of neebish questions of the day...
i flashed new radio from stock to version 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M and started reading a bit after, after a while i became aware that changing the radio could affect battery life and also it could be wrong in terms of where i live in the world, ive had it on my phone for several hours, and it seems to be working well, but im just a noob..... how can i know
i was basicly wondering if anyone of u who actually know this stuff could confirm that i didnt do anything stupid ? im putting in the link to where i found the radio files (its posted in the comments on the page by rataplan626, its not the same radio as the one that originally was posted in the thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312144&page=5
thank you for great answers and for being patient with those of us that are new to all of the difficult terms and choices connected to rooting and stuff i hope someday i will be just as big of an resource as you guys
if the radio flashed then everything should be fine. The best way to test is to just use the phone. You won't notice much of a difference though but if you do then something may have gone wrong. But provided it was all done right, that radio should be fine. However, i should advise you flashing radios are not the safest thing for your phone. Also I don't think it makes much of a difference where you are. I flashed that same radio and it's all good for me.
I would advise searching around a bit more though. These questions have been answered many times before.
thnx then it should all be fine
Cheers ^^
