[Q] risks of flashing radio?, how to know if somethings wrong? - HTC Desire S

hi and welcome to another round of neebish questions of the day...
i flashed new radio from stock to version 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M and started reading a bit after, after a while i became aware that changing the radio could affect battery life and also it could be wrong in terms of where i live in the world, ive had it on my phone for several hours, and it seems to be working well, but im just a noob..... how can i know
i was basicly wondering if anyone of u who actually know this stuff could confirm that i didnt do anything stupid ? im putting in the link to where i found the radio files (its posted in the comments on the page by rataplan626, its not the same radio as the one that originally was posted in the thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312144&page=5
thank you for great answers and for being patient with those of us that are new to all of the difficult terms and choices connected to rooting and stuff i hope someday i will be just as big of an resource as you guys

if the radio flashed then everything should be fine. The best way to test is to just use the phone. You won't notice much of a difference though but if you do then something may have gone wrong. But provided it was all done right, that radio should be fine. However, i should advise you flashing radios are not the safest thing for your phone. Also I don't think it makes much of a difference where you are. I flashed that same radio and it's all good for me.
I would advise searching around a bit more though. These questions have been answered many times before.

thnx then it should all be fine
Cheers ^^

Can you help me decide? WM6 ROM for old AT&T Blue, 8125 in Southern California

hello everyone!
i have been reading feverishly on all of this, and think i have some solid ideas.
Wanted to come right out and ask.
Anyone have a recommendation for me as far as which WM6 Rom to upgrade to?
My 8125 is unlocked for use with the old AT&T Blue (yes, i know, im holding on for dear life out of contract!)
Which would work best for me? (rom, radio, etc, for WM6. and do i have to unlock the CID again? same old method? or new for WM6?)
I am sick of WM5 and the issues i am having a fresh start would do it, but why not upgrade!?
appreciate any links as well.
Thanks for your advice in advance!
Dan
My findings
Hi,
It's always best to first read the tread on how to flash. Realy.
2nd flash to the latest rom from your provider .
Radio 2.19 seems to be the best in general. Others have issues in some situations. However you can flash those without hard reset. So you can try several without losing settings and stuff.
On OS my findings for wm6 are Faria's latest (no touch) or reTOUChed final. But i didn't try NBD 7.9 yet.
All respect to other cooks! these just met my needs best. It's personal.
greetings
Spinner van Webben
thanks for the input

Hey, take a look at my sig.
I've been reading through these forums for months too.
Here's my 2 cents:
You need to decide what kind of ROM you want... Touch or Crossbow
I use to love Crossbow but I found Touch and I'm in love with it...once you go with Touch you won't want to go to Crossbow anymore.
If you want Touch.. I would say NBD v7.8..it's awesome.
If you want Crossbow.. NTS v1 (jaguar) is awesome too... there is NTS v2.. but I haven't tried it.
sweet. you have the same setup i do
i am not familiar with touch or crossbow. what is the diff?
can you link me to the files i need, and/or the procedure you used to update?
thanks so much

Sorry, my friend... then you have lot of reading to do.
Espeically if you don't even know how to flash...
This is for your own good.. if you don't know what you're doing.. you might brick your phone.... meaning dead phone.
So, I advise you to start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298613
This should tell you how to flash...
Then you can start picking out what you want to flash to.
Touch: NBD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311534
Crossbow: NTS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314660
If you don't know the difference then try flashing them both and pick which one you like... I did... I must have flashed like dozens of time to figure out which one I liked. Also, people have different needs and preference so my taste in ROMs might not fit your needs too.
Just because you flash a new ROM doesn't mean everything's going to work... we'd want them to but sometime it's now.. so, without knowing what you did you won't probably enjoy the new ROM.
Try to enjoy this learning process.. otherwise, I'd say don't even bother because you're gonna have hell of a time trying to get everything just right.
I'm not trying to be mean.... just trying to help.
I'll try to help anyone if I can.. just like everyone else in this forum.
PS. I go here to see the list of threads for WM6 Wizard (8125).. I try to keep up with it but can't..so, I just focus on what I like.

I do know how to flash!
i flashed it before, but i am not up to speed with the new stuff.
to make my phone ideal, stable, and the best it can be,
which version recommendations do you suggest for, rom, radio, etc.
how should i set the phone up? which rom should i download and is there a particular place you can link me to download?
if i just know WHAT i want to, which versions, etc, i can read up, search and do all that myself. i just dont know what would be ideal for me right now
i am having a problem with the 8125 where i will be talking and it will just shut off and start rebooting, and keep rebooting. die, reboot. with full battery.
then when i plug it in to the stock charger, it will come on, but the battery reads in at like 6-15%,
is this the battery?
it started acting up when i spilled a little water on it last week!

I am in SC with ATT (Cingular) and a 8125 G4 and am having good results with XDA Mobile 6 Release 2a Full Version. I started flashing without unlocking the CID but it was a pain so I went ahead and unlocked it, but it is not necessary and there are some great step by step instructions in the forum. I followed the instructions and even though I am a newbie I haven't bricked my phone.

Oh.. in that case.. just like my sig says, I use NBD v7.8 right.. gonna flash to v7.9 soon.. man, thast zoki guy is fast and good.
go here and you'll find bunch of he's ROMs... I found that v7.4 & v7.8 is most stable, for me at least.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311534
For Radio.. the UK T-Mobile 2.19 is most stable from what I hear and experienced.
I've only tried 2.69 with ipl/spl 3.08.. but didn't work out.. I started missing calls.
There are group of people who's trying to figure out which Radio is the best in this forum... so, look in there time to time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=312834&page=22
When flashing I always try to flash to T-Mobile 2.26 first.. then flash UK T-mobile 2.19.. then whatever ROM I want.. this way I start fresh all the time.
About your battery... well, I'm no expert but it might be with your battery... don't know.. I bet that water did do some damage.. if it's still under warrenty I would try getting a replacement for the phone first... then, if it still doesn't work then try getting new battery. Other then that, I don't know much about battery... good luck!

Howdy Hank, and Welcome. MOST devs will ask that you please read the guides and search thru what become diluted and crappy threads. Avoid Techie Litter and READ Mr. Clowns One stop Inspire Guide - in the Forum Inspire 4G Android Development - you'll want to bookmark it. There is a lot of repetition, so I can paste the best and most vital below.) and search so that you would avoid re-creating already answered threads. From what I gather and experienced, it is very repetitious and annoying answering our simple questions - its a puzzle we havent pieced together, and its on us to do that. After being somewhat literate in the geekspeak (sorry DevS!!) and you start getting more relevant inormation processed and formatted in your own Hard drive -BRAIN- You begin formulating more specific and pertinent questions. Until then, if and if and when you get an answer, the word or incomplete sentence they respond with is to encourage searching, again. - Your problem is most likely NOT unique. Informed and Deliberate SEARCHING and READing before asking is vital. YOU need to know and understand what you are doing. I Did Not. I found out the hard way.... also be sure to post all threads in appropiate section, no double posting.
We have some great developers on our forum, and the Moderator -Mr. Clown- DOES CLEAN HOUSE.
Hi Mr. Clown! Anyone ever told you how utterly freaky your profile pic is?
Finally, when your in exasperation, because you did not listen to that little voice in your head (or developer within) - and if you cant find your answer after SEARCHING - its probably a viable question. with that said....
I will post a link or two at the bottom for you. From what I gather, especially until you have some experience flashing (make a Nandroid backup everytime!!!) It would be best to stick with your stock radio. One of the most finnicky parts of rom management is flashing radios, and without a successful flash, your looking at a 500$ paperweight. Each device, (Inspire) is the same yet also different. The radio that JimBob uses and loves, may scrabble your signal and/or cause battery issues, connectivity issues etc... Dont get too caught up in maximizing the performance of your device, as simply rooting your phone and installing almost any kustom Rom/Kernal will all but increase performance to maximum. (Edit - soon you'll learn about over and under clocking... THINK SPEED!)
Flashing radios is one of the more dangerous and somewhat advanced manuevers you can perform. Proceed with caution. Did I mention you must be rooted, with S-Off, and no fewer than a buttload of worries and clicks and blah blah later, you may possibly experience better signal/battery etc. However - you can also dramatically decrease performance, and or Brick your device. I cannot stress this enough. I took these admonitions with somewhat of a lackadaisical (carefree) attitude, and many deep breaths and fingers crossed later - have learned to appreciate how much more BadA$$ my device is just being rooted, and breaking those stock parameters... YOUR PHONE IS SMART - DO NOT BE STUPID.
If you really really must flash a radio, you will also need the corresponding RIL code for said radio. Some come packaged with the radio, not all do. I only began looking earnestly into radios over the last couple of weeks, and the results were varied, but none performed better than stock. Remember a radio must be in PD98IMG.zip format or installation will be aborted. Before I climb down off my pedestal of recently acquired knowledge, let me say some of the links and the threads and info posted can often sound appealing - but lead to some pretty Pre 3G performance and worse. Sometimes there are alternatives and occasionally things will sound contradictory, However the devs usually find common ground and work together to keep everything streamlined and portaled. No. Ported. I think.
Some folks prefer the 50 click/usb debug/ abkpush method by RogerRabbitt whilst others prefer a different, easier(?) yet still (often) HIT and MISS flash from recovery... Best Way - Boot into Recovery, and Manage things yourself. You know its wiped, flashed, if not flashed - why, etc. And lets face it, the geek factor is pretty damn cool. Controlling your phones operating system is Extremely Fragile territory, but you'll feel awesome when whooing the ladies with your new P.C. slang.
"HI I am Dyliho, and Your Amazingly Beautiful...What do you say you give me SuperUser Permissions - and I Root that StockRom you've got, then I can flash your Kernal with MY Uploaded Zip, and really get you going..."
Take this with a grain of salt - but I found a method where simply renaming your radio download to 98PDIMG.zip, and placing it to the root of your sd card (sd/), then power off, then holding vol. down THEN power and hold which brings you into bootloader. As it will do everytime, it searches for the PD98IMG.zip, only this time finds it (you just created it and put it on the root of your SD) - and it takes over and you follow directions - yields seemingly flawless results (as far as flashing is concerned) and avoids some pretty scary things I have read about PermaBricks. ALWAYS CHECK MD5 SUM TO ENSURE NO FILES WERE CORRUPTED DURING TRANSFER/DOWNLOAD BEFORE YOU FLASH. Before you Flash. AGAIN - before you flash verify... The md5 sum when matching Devs md5 sum is verification the file is complete. A RADIO MUST BE WHOLESOME AND CLEANLY TRANSFERED/DOWNLOADED. Other Stuff is fixable (generally) or just wont flash, but no harm no foul.... A failed radio boot you can't recover from they say. I dont want to know. Three radios flashed for me yielded horrible results with signal and battery for One, while the ATT Radio and New Update seem to yield the same statistics. Its only 48 hours into this ATT Update though, as I said before, I have messed up. You do not need ENG S-Off, only A rooted phone with S-Off to flash the radio. Please sir, READ READ READ and put the pieces together yourself, and check comments frequently. I WISH YOU LUCK, and if you inform yourself, you should be Fine.zip
Oh Yeah!! The Rom I Married is MiUI. A brand new stable release can and will be dropping any moment. Try it, I LOVE IT. Some hate it, too much of an iOS look, iphone may be inferior, but aesthetics is the one of the most yet also least amazing things about this Rom. Performance is AMAZINGLY Awesome, using Cyano#6 by Cattleprod, a devoted kernal tweaker - and the Inspire Support for MiUI by Symonc is Top-Notch. The guy is literally bombarded with posts and he is quick to help and usually has the fix, if he hasnt already answered it twice. STOCK radio in my opinion was made for this Rom (not factually, every device is different to an extent, remember that.) Aside from speed and potential Phone Frying Performance + a thousand other awesome features, MiUI has the guilt free bonus of Not Accepting Donations. Though I dont guess they would kill you if you did...
My Radio was stock 12.19.xx.xx.30.06.04.06(?) And now I have the OTA Update by either Att or HTC. 26.06.06.06(?) ----->(never do Over The Air Updates for stock software, I found a radio_update someone posted, and used the download link. remember - you've been rooted!!)<------

And lastly - forgive me for assuming your a new comer to Xda, more specifically -a Rooted Android. I kind of wanted to get it all out myself, as I have spent the better part of a month anxiously Flashing for Performance and winding up soft-bricked and boot-looped. The Last 48 hours I spent Optimizing my phone to Holy Batman and back to soft brick, somehow frying or damaging my SD card - and finally - back to a glorious example of superb performance. Its all bare bones too, save for (that awesome developers name here) Tinny Audio Fix for Inspire and Desire HD.
Oh yes --- and all Desire HD (HD) files should be perfectly compatible with INSPIRE. THERE. now I AM DONE. Once you find your Rom/Kernal combo Stick with it. THE DEVS ROCK! with awesome and constant updates!!! - WOOOO! Did ya make it thru? Everything else is slightly more complicated and technical... Let Your Fun Begin!!! And GoodDay and GoodNight. You may be playing a while....
I tried out that ROM with the suggested radio. I ran it for @4 days. I couldn't keep a good signal around town and I could never get a solid gps lock. I went back to stock radio and MIUI. You will probably get more answers if you ask the question in the thread about the ROM so everyone using the ROM sees your question.

Trust me man, it is No problemo. I did not take baby steps, and went a day several times working through worthless threads, erring on the side of caution. Then when I got it running again - I dove back in. I just got it back to badass - and the great thing is I am only running MIUI and Cattlprods Cyano Kernal with the OTA updated radio, and the ever needed Tinny Audio fix by that other awesome dude...
There are lots of things people do to make thier Inspires Inspiring. The developers wind up incorporating these to a great extent into thier work, making it easy for you. And when you download a rom, link the thread - developers really enjoy and need the CRITICAL input... the noob onslaught that tires them. Thank them, and show your love by donating if/when possible. Youll learn to love it, if you dont already. MiUI, its gonna be ready.soon, if not now(?!)
Get ready.to have a completely customized user interface (if you desire) and amazing performance at an amazingly reliable and small package. Bigger is not always better on Android...

Dyliho must be a politician; in all his rambling he didn't really truly answer your specific questions very well and I'm not sure he's even used the ROM you are specifically asking about. But his posts do contain unsolicited info on forum rules, conflicting reasons on why you should and shouldn't flash a radio, some blurbs about MIUI and symonc, and something about being lackadaisical.
You asked for feedback, so here is mine. As you may know, TPGB-CM20110509 is a Gingerbread ROM based on CM7 build 61. The recommended radio (26.06.06.30) is the new radio that was pushed to the stock Inspire ROMs at the end of April. I've used this radio on TPGB-CM20110509 and CM7 build 69, and this radio is performing very well. The matching Radio Interface Layer (RIL) for this radio is HTC-RIL_2.2.0079HM, which was also pushed out to the stock Inspires at the same time as the radio. I've had very good results with this RIL, as well as the RIL that now comes with CM7 (HTC-RIL_2.2.0099HM). My battery life has never been better. As with a lot of custom ROMs, my GPS totally sucked, but using the GPS fix mentioned in my sig fixed this issue (GPS now locks in under 5 seconds outdoors, 7-15 seconds indoors). Speeds are also great with my APN fix applied (see sig). So my recommendation is to definitely try out this radio. If you need any help or instructions feel free to PM me. I'm also still fully supporting my APN thread in the Dev section if you have any issues with that.
@henrybravo a smidge off-topic but which gps fix did you flash? I flashed North America and I was curious if you are having better results using just the area you are located.

I don't plan on traveling outside of my region in the near future so I just flashed the region specific file - in my case it is GPSFIX_SouthMidState.V1.2.zip. I haven't flashed the overall North American fix, how is that one working out for you?

Bravo Henry Bravo, you have scrutinized my flawed intro to the man. No reason to be a hater. People left the dude hanging... And Sorry Hank, I didnt know Tgbpr6743 was a Rom. I assumed it was auto correct gone haywire or something of the sort - and you were asking about radios in general. This is the most wordy thread I have seen in quite a long time. Dyliho, I can't read your posts. Way too wordy. I'm sure you are trying to help but, God man. Or are you a woman. That might explain it actually.
I have used 26_06_06_30_M radio in about 7 different ROMs and it has been the best for me. Maybe give it a try. I live in Central Pennsylvania.
Thanks to All Who Have Replied
Thanks every1. From the long 2 the short replies, I gleened valuable info from each. Yes, I am a noob & was glad 2 recieve all info I did in this thread.
Was successful in Rooting my phone & installed the GingerBeast ROM last night as a place to start. Just Flashed it & nothing more at this time. Will play w/ it later 2day & c how everything goes.
Ultimately do want to try the TPGB-CM20110509 ROM, but was concerned bout the Recommended Radio being different than mine & GingerBeast utilized mine so I felt more comfortable trying it for the 1st go round.
Again, going at it slow & reading/learning as much as I can b4 trying things.
Appreciate any & all help.

I'm running the latest honeysense on my inspire. I was reading about flashing different radios and changing the clock speed. What are the benefits from these modifications and where can i find a good guide on how to do it?

Well, there's a lot of info regarding over/underclocking. Searching will provide you with probably more than you'll know what to do with.
As applies to the ROM you're running, the best and most relevant discussion would likely be in the honeysense ROM thread itself.
I know browsing through pages of posts doesn't sound appealing, but it really is a good idea when it comes to this stuff, to get a feel for what others have been doing in this area with that particular ROM.
Now, as far as radios, often times there'll be a radio recommended for a rom, that recommendation could be the result of any number of things.
The stock OTA radio often ends up working the most reliably across a lot of roms. If you're not experiencing any issues with signal quality/data speeds, there really isn't any need to mess with it.
Even after flashing a new ROM, if performance in these areas seems to be degraded compared to your previous ROM, this can often times be addressed by making sure the RIL of the ROM is matched with your radio.
RILs change with each new ROM flash, radios do not. So a mismatch is a common occurrence and can cause radio performance issues, yet is easily remedied by flashing the appropriate RIL.
The inspire only radio thread has all the radio/rils/recommendations/instructions you need...over in the dev section.

RE: Overclocking the CPU
I think this is about the most elegant solution....I'm a CPU guy...so maybe overly weird I do not want some "App" running my over/underclock...This works...and 52 steps should be enough to figure out what works for you in conjunction with something like Llama to toggle the other stuff...JMHO....It is available on a few ROM's now i believe....run adb command though n actually see what clock steps are available: for some reason my cpu is missing a common speed step :-o. . bad qualcom bad
Edit: ooops the link:

Thanks for the replies guys. I've gotten through about 300 pages of the honey ROM thread. Very tedious and confusing LOL.
I live right up the road from Qualcomm, ill be sure to stop by and share your discontent

[Q] What is radio?

I realize many of you see this as a dumb question. But I see a lot of posts about radios. I've tried looking around the web what it is but couldn't really find good explaining information. I see a lot of posts for flashing the radio and a lot of different versions.
I'm running MIUI on my Sensation 4G and if radio is something I need to flash then I want to know what it is before I try flashing and brick my phone. So I've managed to find the version I have so if someone can point me the right direction I'd be very grateful.
So the main question is - WHAT IS RADIO?
So this is what I got
Radio - 10.14.9035.01_M
the radio pretty much just has to do with the wireless connectivity of ur phone, so ur wifi, bluetooth, 3g all controlled by your phones radio.
you shouldnt have to flash a new radio for every rom, if your facing problems, and think a new radio could fix them then you could try a new radio if you wanted.
hope this helped
Lol oh yea definitely! very simply put too! I just was wondering why there's so many versions and chance of bricking dam thing.

Flashing the radio is just about the only sure fire way of bricking it.. It's one of those things people are most skeptical about flashing. No nandroid will save you with an improperly flashed radio
EDIT: I've been flashing roms for a long time now and not once have I ever had to flash a new radio.

OK. I installed the HD Revolution 3.6.9 ROM days ago and have 2 major issues. As I am a new member, I am unable to post in the developmental section. Grateful for the OP to ask the question as I am also seeking to know "what radio is".
Although, I also want to ask - what is a kernel?
I believe thousands of members installed that HD Revolution 3.6.9 ROM and I couldn't find any reference for bluetooth and mms issues.
My phone can only detect my Nokia phone, my Plantronics bluetooth M100 is undetectable.
I am also unable to send MMS and yes, I tried the original settings, called the network and played with different settings but problem persists.
I checked the Hardware Information of the phone and it says "Bluetooth address - unavailable"
Kernel is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. So basically kernel tells all the hardware what to do (overclocked processors, undervolted batteries and etc) So far best one I've tried for Sensation 4G is the 2.6.35.14 Trinity S4G. Processor is overclocked to 1.7Ghz from stock 1.2 Ghz and the battery life is great!

Obviously some radios are better than others?

Well that I'm not sure how accurate this statement is. That's why I started this thread just to know what it is. But from all the info I gathered online, you don't really need to flash a radio. Every thread with radios I saw that ppl will put a warning that you might brick your phone. So, my phone works great, never had any problems so I'll stay on the safe side (for now) and just do more research

Good decision..

GPs Accuracy issue (new one)

Trying to track down if the GPS issues i'm having can be coded around without access to the radio code. Any radio after 11.69B on Sensation with seemingly any ROM has bad accuracy issues when using fine GPS while in motion. So RunKeeper , an app that keeps track of your running and distance/speed etc is effectively broken due to this... and altho 11.69A works, it has some other bugs with the latest ROMs so it is annoying me. It's possible there's no controlling things and it needs to be fixed in the radio, thats where i'm looking for some help. I did forward this to RunKeepers developers but haven't gotten a reply yet. I'm sure this impacts other Apps.
The accuracy bounces around enough that when running a straight line down a road, it will bounce to different sides of the street so the app thinks youve run across the street dozens of times while running and it adds up as an additional 1/4 mile of running and throws off all the distance/speed calculations the app does. Previously for years it tracked the straight line you ran and was mostly accurate...
Anyways, thanks!
wrong form section, try to look a bit better next time this is for q&a. U could delete the radio file from the pdg or something. then install 11.69A and then reinstll fw without the radio in the package

You do realize that it is a development section. You suppose to post this in general section.
\Regards,
It does this with 3.32 and 3.33 and all radios newer than 11.69A .. and 11.69A is buggy with new ROMs. Read what I wrote. I asked in Q&A. Try trying to help instead of jumping on someone with pure enjoyment.
I have no trouble changing ROMs, using ADB or even coding Java, but I realize you have the monopoly on development skill and knowledge .. so I thought maybe you had the skill to help me.

i dont understand it completly i think, u want a scertain radio, get the fw for that radio, flash it via fastboot, then get the newer needed fw and only remove the radio file, it should work idk what u mean.. worked for me with hboot
You don't get it. I flashed all the different radios via fastboot already. Latest one that has proper working GPS is 11.69A , which has other bugs in latest ARHD and CM9. GPS works on the others but active/fine GPS is broken and inaccurate. For basic geolocation it would be fine, but for tracking movement and rate of speed etc it's completely broken. It might be hardcoded radio bugs but i'm trying to figure out if perhaps theres something else that can be changed.
So don't just assume that the new guy posting is completely clueless because i'm far from it.

I didn't ever say that u are the new guy that doesnt know ****, but radio 11.29A works in fw 3.33 to so just flash the radio and your problem is over as far as i know..
I did, problem still happened even with 11.69A , just not as badly. It really seems like a non-radio issue at this point. I haven't wiped EFS yet, Trying to find efs wipe tool for sensation, last one i used was for g2 and i dont know if it resides in the same place on sensation

Ohh really..
You know..being an RC iam extremely cautious when I recommend something.. At least I double check it.. Before I post it
Fyi.. That method used to be one of the gps fix solution.. In faq section of arhd thread..
And I must have did that.. Around 5-6 times now.. When I changed the rom
Also I was sooooo cautious first time that I literally dumped those partitions and checked them myself..
So now i believe that you will understand that the efs is at the same partitions
And I suggest you to edit that post of yours.. It will create unnecessary panic to people
