[Q] GPS: Is this a hardware issue? - HTC Inspire 4G

This is really starting to piss me off.
I have the latest AT&T radio (see sig) with corresponding RIL (used gtg465's RIL flasher).
I used AngelDeath's North East fix (boot into recovery, install zip from SDCard), also installing GPS Status.
I tried the above with the stock AT&T radio.
I flashed both the radio and RIL twice in a row, for both scenarios.
I backed up my current ROM, and installed a fresh ROM (same one, Inspired Ace), and did all the above as well.
It's not working.
GPS locks in ~200-300 seconds, but is never accurate. It never goes under 40m accuracy, yet it's locked on to 6+ satellites.
The lock also changes frequently, literally 9 satellites one second, down to 4 the next, back up to 6, and everything in between... and this is in clear skies.
I have never used this exact phone with stock. I've used the demo phone at the AT&T store, but this exact phone, immediately I got it, I rooted it, so I don't know if GPS works or not...
Is this a hardware issue? Should I return my phone via warranty?

I exchanged mine because the GPS only worked when it wanted. My new phone has been great never less than 6 sats and 10-20 ft accuracy.

I see. I don't know enough about how Inspire works, to deduce if this is a hardware or software issue, as it locks, but it can't calculate where I am (is that because of the hardware not giving the correct info to the software to calculate? or is that because the software just can't calculate? I have no idea).

I believe mine was hardware related as diff GPS scripts or Roms had no effect on it. Lucky for me I bought mine at Costco, they have a 90 day exchange.

Well, this is a hardware defect, and should be covered by the 1-year warranty.
Anywho, did your previous one actually lock-on like mine, but never was accurate, or did yours never lock-on?
I'm going to try going to the roof of this building (61st floor) and try to lock a signal up there... if this doesn't work... I don't know.

I has terrible GPS fix. I contacted HTC and they agreed to repair it under warranty (HTC does not do exchanges). I paid $32 for shipping, they receive on a Tuesday and they are already shipping it out on Wednesday am. They said that all the problem was that I had not selected the USE GPS FOR LOCATION check mark. I told the technician that it was obvious that it would not be checked, as I had done a factory restore prior to sending it and the default setting is turned off, and of course, problem was still there.
After a lot of discussion they agreed to pay my second shipping, but I won't send it, they use the slowest shipping option from FedEx so you are easily looking at two weeks without phone.
So, good luck to you my dear sir.

I'm actually within the 30-days for AT&T, so going to replace it via AT&T if I do .

I just got my replacement Monday for this very issue. It's a "known" defect. Save your sanity and get it replaced.

Thanks, but I just finished.
Downloaded the stock PD98IMG.zip, installed it, rename/remove the .zip, went through the Ace Hack directions upto #3, and wrote "./gfree -s on" on the terminal emulator, put/rename the .zip back to PD98IMG.zip and boot into bootloader, let it auto-update back to stock.
Done, with SHIP S-ON showing in the bootloader, and having the stock ROM.
=)
*EDIT*
With everything now stock, the GPS should work, but guess what. It doesn't heh... same issue as with the ROMs. It locks fine (in 200-400 seconds...), but isn't accurate at all.

Good deal. Enjoy your new phone.

For those of you who are running custom ROMs and are having GPS fix trouble (especially if you're in North America / US) I can confirm that using the below market app will solve your problems, assuming that you don't legitimately have hardware issues:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&feature=search_result
Permit me to paraphrase this thread over at the HTC forums:
http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/113/p/9302/40077.aspx
Unlike HTC phones running WindowsMobile, HTC's Android phones do not have a 'Quick GPS' applet to automatically download ephemeral data from the web. Therefore it may require an extremely long startup time for the system ROM and GPS chip to download the data from satellites which takes far longer than doing so from the internet. Using the above application greatly speeds the update of data, much in the way that 'Quick GPS' did for HTC WM phones by downloading ephemeral data from the internet to maintain updated satellite tables in the GPS chipset.
My guess is that many of the base ROMs being used (like RCMix Kingdom) are from overseas (EU or Asia) phones which have their satellite data tables geared for that region. That's why many of us, when using new custom ROMs are having trouble on warmup because the tables are assuming a sky over Germany or Taiwan, rather than a sky over NY or UT.
Hope this helps. Let me know if anyone else has success or failure with it. And of course, if you find it solves your problems, please donate to the developer of the app.

I agree with you about that Bill, I truly think some peoples problems are hardware related as was mine. My GPS is insane on my new phone. So I personally recommend to anybody with GPS issues to exchange if you've exhausted all avenues.

My gps works great, without a case. Putting a case on it kills the gps reception. AT&T refuses to exchange it for me. I'm using a seido innocase now, which has the least effect on the gps.
Unhappy about the whole situation.

I tried the app bill recommended as well. No luck. I called att and went from customer support, to technical support, to warranty support and they are sending me a replacement. I went through the ropes and was polite and described how the gps does not work in any application and they were courteous and helped me out. Hopefully it will fix my gps. I may just run the rooted stock rom to allow sideloading once I get it. It would be nice if it supports tethering... need to look into that.

The ****?
AT&T refused to replace the phone.
I am under the 30-day grace period (new customer).
I showed them that my phone has 0 locks, and my Google Maps is only accurate to 1600 meters in their store.
They claimed it was because I'm indoors, and I showed them the store model, which had a 5 meter accuracy with GPS.
I even asked to download the GPS Status app on the store model, and it had 9 satellites locked on.
Mine? Same location, 0 satellites even visible.
I told them I think the GPS chip is broken, and they said there is no GPS chip on the phone, and that it's all done by the SIM card. . .
They replaced my SIM card, and told me they won't replace the phone, as there's nothing wrong with it.
What the hell do I do?

Go back and talk to a manager or find a different ATT store. They should exchange without to much grief.

I just find it funny how they simply refuse that there's a GPS chip in there, and that the SIM card is responsible for the GPS lock...

GPS in Europe

I've searched and searched most of the Android forums along with the Eris forums as well but I can't find anyone who has gotten this to work. The best I could find was someone in Puerto Rico with a Eris that even with a 1x connection wasn't able to get a GPS sync.
Has anyone traveled to Europe with a CDMA Hero and been able to get a GPS lock?
Were you able to use co-pilot or something similar with offline maps to be able to navigate around?
I tested putting the phone in airplane mode and turning on GPS and using GPS Logger to see if I get a sync and I do here in the US. In the settings I only had "Use GPS satellites" checked and not "use wireless networks". This leads me to believe it should work but I have to wonder if the last sync was cached which allowed it to work in testing.
So if anyone has and real life experience with this please let me know, otherwise I may have to drag out the old Mogul with a BT GPS dongle.
Good question! I am going to Japan for 2 weeks and was wondering the same thing.
It should work I think, cause GPS is supposed to locate you anywhere. Its just the maps but google maps has the whole world.

Only thing is, Maps requires a data connection to display the maps!
You'd probably have to get a europe navigation program for android (if one exists?)

Yeah, it's called CoPilet Live Navigation Europe, but its f***ing expensive lol
like $75 USD
Better pleasure me at the same time as navigating for that price

Wouldn't he still need data to use it? Europe doesn't use our CDMA and he wouldn't have signal.
I found a navigation app that doesn't need an interenet connection. It relies on OpenStreetMap so I am not sure how good that data is in Europe
http://www.andnav.org/
I also found this app which lets you download an area while you have an internet connection
http://bigplanetmaps.wordpress.com/
but it seems buggy.
There is also this one but it doesn't look like it has a navigation option
http://www.mapdroyd.com/
All the notable gps navigation apps that have mappacks cost $50 or more.
Another problem is that your phone uses the cell network as a "cheat" to get your initial location. So whenever you boot up a GPS nav app without cell towers it is going to take several minutes to get your location so just be aware it will take awhile to get your location. That fact is true for any GPS unit you start for the first time. This is why the newer units will ask for the city you are in so it can try to get a lock faster.
I was in Europe earlier this month and none of the pictures I took with the phone had any of the GPS data in it.
Hope your results are different.

lol wow I don't even remember asking that last night ?? what a dumb question haha
I think a good way to test if it will work is to do a complete wipe and as soon as the phone boots throw it in airplane mode. Then disable the network location by celltower. Disable Mobile network. Take it out of airplane mode and activate only the GPS(not the mobile network location... make sure that is off before you come out of airplane mode)
Then put one of those program on your phone (I am liking andnav) and see if it finds your location after several minutes.
You need to wipe it so your phone never gets your current location. This will be a similar situation to when you go overseas.
The big question here is does the Hero need that initial location from the towers or will it do like other GPS units and search until it find the location(which can take many minutes!)
I just tried that andnav2 and it properly won't work for you.
Even if you download the mappacks you will still need to cache and area you are visiting while you have a data connection. Then you can't plan routes there unless you have a data connection. You can however pre-load routes and then don't need a data connection but you have to pre-plan stuff.
I am sorry to say but I think your best bet is to get a dedicated unit. The paid apps for the android might do the job for you if you want to save on how many electronics you carry around but they are so expensive that I say by then just buy a separate unit.
If you have or want to buy a TomTom then I can tell you how to get maps for your areas you are visiting but you will need to PM me. Not only am I not allowed to post but that would be way off topic since it has nothing to do with the Hero. I took a TomTom One when I went to Germany a couple months ago and it worked like a charm.
Just bumping this in case anyone has any further insight or has tried this.
I still planning on trying it myself. I'll have the old mogul with a bluetooth gps dongle as a backup.
Actually here is a question. Has anyone gotten a bluetooth gps dongle to work with their phones. I know the last time I was in europe my mogul would not pick up a gps signal with the internal chip but as soon as I fired up the bluetooth everything was good.

Yep, I'm in Japan right now. As soon as I took my phone out of airplane mode I got a roaming notification for $1.99/minute. No thanks! I disabled mobile network and have just been using the camera and music functions.
I'm posting this from my father-in-law's computer. He lives in a small town outside of Tokyo and I haven't found a wifi hotspot yet. I'm going in to Tokyo tomorrow so I will try to find a free one somewhere and maybe download some maps.
Earlier today I tried getting a GPS lock w/google maps and it seems like it found my location (no map, of course) but now it says "your location is temporarily unavailable". Maybe the initial lock was cached data? I may try the wipe/airplane mode method that centron posted.
BTW, I have seen ads for WIMAX here. Hopefully next time I'm here I'll have the EVO.
Based on my experience traveling around Europe with my Sprint Mogul you will need to have a CDMA signal even if your phone has a dedicated GPS chip. Even TomTom wouldn't work without it. Granted this is a different phone running WM6, but I believe the result will be the same.
Please write us back when you test it out across the pond and let us know.
I'll try to remember in the am. I'm in the UK right now. I tried the other day, but was having issues getting a dhcp addresses from the wifi ....

[fixed] Internet problem on sensation?

Hi,
To be clear: Internet is not the app, not over Wifi but over 4G/3G/H etc..
I got my sensation 3 days now and there seems to be a issue with the internet connection.
Mine keeps requesting data but it doesnt get any data back.
Apps like internet browser sometimes work and sometimes they dont (loading google), the weather app says there is no internet connection and manage to sometimes get the actual weather.
I tried restarting it serval times but no success..
Internet does work on my HTC Hero.
Edit:
Found the problem, had to enable data roaming..
Odd thing that it works sometimes without roaming tho..
4G internet issues
I am having the same problem with my internet, though enabling data roaming did not correct my problem. Internet and web based apps work fine over WIFI, but will randomly work over 4G. Is anyone else having a similar issue?

I get a severe lag now and then when connected to 4G - seems to take a while for the connection to initiate. I've tried the "fix" posted in another thread, but that only seemed to resolve the issue temporarily.
It seems like location may have something to do with it as well. The tower closest to my home is where I experience the most issues. Though my G2X or my fiance's vibrant work without any issues.

That could contribute to my issue. I seem to live near a cell dead zone.
Theres a few threads open on this issue. There doesnt seem to be a permanent fix yet, but it is extremely annoying.
Same here, my connection would send data but winter recieve sometimes. Kinda annoying. Hopefully, htc addresses this problem soon.

Same issue - across multiple handsets
Hi, it's been a while since I posted in XDA but this issue has been a regular one with my T-mobile service, across multiple devices. I have searched far and wide for anyone else seeing this exact problem, and finally here you are. I hope this helps other users:
1) Purchased the original myTouch 3G; approx 1 year with zero connectivity issues. Loved it, exceptional for its time.
2) Purchased (upgrade) myTouch 3G Slide at launch. Following 3-5 months saw This issue with outgoing data, but no incoming response. 60/40 the internet would respond or not in any application (web, streaming, podcasts), it was a real crapshoot. Assumed the problem was isolated and performed a few master resets. Zero apps installed and continued to see the same issue. Decided it was either software or radio related and called T-mo for advice. They suggested a replacement unit after standard troubleshooting (re-seat SIM, master reset, check that you have substantial signal).
3) New MT3G Slide, same outcome. Called back. Finally received a reasonable suggestion: get a new (free) SIM from T-mo as the one I currently had was slightly older. Was sure this was the issue as the rep sounded very confident when I explained the situation. Received new SIM!
4) No change, issue persisted. Following day called T-mo and had a 'ticket' escalated to engineering dept. Was assured I would receive a call from eng. dept, but no such luck. Bothered by this whole mess and lacking in answers from T-mo, I sold the Slide and upgraded to the G2X.
5) The issue once again reared its head! If the stars were aligned and I did get In/Out data, it was 11KB/s (90kbps) tops. Ex: 5MB podcast would take 0.5-1.5 min (30-90 sec) to download prior to issue, now 10-15 min. This was with no apps installed, 4 bars of signal, 4G status icon, across multiple geographical locations, and fingers on both hands crossed. It was about this time I suspected that somehow T-mo's network was throttling my account. But, I had never used more than 1GB in a month, and they assured me I was not being throttled. A serious WTF was had
6) Realizing there were bigger problems in the world and finally at wit's end, I returned the G2X and am waiting patiently for my contract to expire in July, while using an old Nokia candybar in the meantime for calls and text only.
7) July: move to new carrier or stay with T-mo (if we can figure out what this issue is). 8 year customer, need internet on a smartphone though.

I am having the same issue, and have gone through the same steps. New Sensation (exchnaged mine twice now) followed by new SIM, tried the *fix* posted, turned on data roaming, and still nothing. I have talked to Tmo several times, and they are supposed to be checking the towers in my area, an engineer is supposed to contact me in up to 72 hours. The Evo 3D comes out before my 14 day return period, so I may just jump ship if this problem persists. Hoping to find a fix though, as this phone is amazing when it's on Wifi

Infuse does not connect to the data network

My infuse does not connect / detect ATT's data network since yesterday. It was working fine till day before yesterday on my way home. Once i reached home I switched to my home wireless. Then yesterday morning when i left for work my phone did not connect to the data network. I no see the HSPA / data network icon on the bar at the top. I called ATT this morning and they could not figure out any problem. They said they have opened a ticket and will get back to me by tomorrow. Wanted to see if anyone else has the same problem? Should i try a factory reset? If so can someone tell me a safe way to do it so that i do not loose any data from my phone? I am currently not rooted and have only installed apps from the android marketplace and I did install the upgrade from ATT that has been pushed out since last week. Thank you for reading my post.
I have data issues with the Infuse as well. At&t had me get new sim cards, factory reset and finally switch the phone....on my second Infuse, same issue. At&t told me it might be a bad batch of phones because the network is fine and there doesn't seem to be any known issues with the Infuse phones.
My data issues occur randomly. It shows me having 3-5 bars, but the browser won't load any sites and some apps give me network connection errors.
thanks for the reply lost2030. I did a factory reset on my phone and the data network is working atleast as of now, will have to wait and watch. Also I just have a feeling my GPS may be working better too..but too early to say i guess.

I cant connect to the att servers as well. it says im up to date and to check in 24 hours and 24 minutes. (still not updated). the power button on my phone sometimes feels sticky when i press it in which kinda feels annoying. would this be worth the 60$ exchange fee?

Then I was with the tech support over the phone for about 1 hour and they too tried several things but nothing worked, asked me to remove the battery and sim card while they try to flush the network, they also reregistered my data plan but it did not work and they just opened a ticket for it. So i finally decided to do a reset. I am glad it works now.
For the ATT update i had received an error the first time round but the second time i tried (the next day) it connected and I was able to update. This was last saturday.
BTW i was supposed to receive a call back by now from ATT regarding a resolution for this but have not yet heard back.

Store manager in SF told me when I was in the store this morning. I've been having text issues where they come in several at a time this week. Its not the most official source but I don't have any real reason to doubt it. Hehe.

Yesterday on the phone the tech support person told me since I am the only 1 yet with this problem in my area they will not consider it a data outage issue but an isolated issue. If they receive more complains from my region they will consider it a data outage issue. So seems there is a disconnect among the ATT staff

Possible GPS fix

I'm coming from the atrix forum here's something that might work for your captivate GPS before the atrix I had the captivate so I know the GPS is unreliable
This improve my atrix GPS indoors at 1meter accuracy

Captivate's problem is hardware, not the server it gets satellite data. Most people that have exchanged their older builds for newer ones have reported a functioning GPS. Me, I must have got lucky my 1007 build the GPS works.
Like said above the captivates gps problem was a hardware problem. Refurbs and newer units are FIXED. Changing supl settings are just a bandaid that will display stronger satellites but wont do nothing trackin/navigation wise.

Do you know if they would switch the phone for me even if I didn't buy it from att. I bought mine on craigslist.

I think the warranty claim only works for the original owner. The only thing they ask me for is the last few digits of my SSN and they look up my account information. Uneless they go by the IMEI numbers (they scan and record each imei number off the back of your phones when exchanging) I dont see how they know. As soon as you put your sim into the phone is appears that it is your phone on your account.
meh...the GPS is passable...I mean how long do we own a device? I live with it for a year or so knowing I'll be moving on anyway
well i probably just wait until the galaxy s 2 comes out and just upgrade. everything about the captivate was perfect except its crappy gps.

If you call ATT and register the iemi # wait a few days they won't know the difference say you bought it from ATT 10 month ago or so so its still under warranty

Does the carrier affect GPS performance?

So I was with several AT&T MVNOs using my Moto G3 (rooted stock). No issue. I switched to a T-Mobile MVNO. Later I noticed my GPS acting up. The GPS just couldn’t come up with a solution even whith good signal from several sattelites. Even when there was a solution, the error was between 40-100 meters. I thought there was no way changing carrier would make a difference. I almost trashed the phone for a new one. I switched back to the AT&T MVNO because of cell coverage issues (not GPS issues). But I noticed my GPS is working just fine once again. Does this make sense to anyone? How could the carrier make a difference?

Hi mate,
I am not 100% sure, but I believe GPS works without a carrier so I don't believe it would be affected by the carrier.
Have you tried looking for some firmware updates?
Most phones use cell towers and GPS for location unless you go into Location settings and change it to use only GPS, so if you don't have a good cell signal your location accuracy might be affected by that.

I was aware of that (strong signal in both cases), and of the AGPS which I routinely update. I can't figure it out. I even restored an old ROM when I knew the GPS was good, but the performance remained poor. And it was not a fluke as now with the AT&T MVNO the GPS remains good.
