Installing bootloaders - Captivate General

Is there a quick tutorial for installing custom bootloaders? I've seen many mentions of "you must have them installed before installing xxx Gingerbread rom" but haven't seen how to do it.
Is it as simple as a copy/paste of the two .bin files and then installing the ROM?
Thanks in advance for any help and sorry for the noob question.

[Q] How to install Timat Kernel?

Hello Forum,
I tried to search to see a related topic but I didn't find but other topics in other forums that's not related to the Xoom.
I'm a n00b and don't know how to flash this Kernel to my xoom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978013
I know that there are steps in the thread about how to install the kernel but I think it's not enough for n00bs like me
So where to download ADB and where to write the given commands?
Thanks a lot guys in advance!
If you don't know how to do it and even can't find the information how to do it, then I suggest not to do it, you can brick your Xoom in the process.
Search for a ADB on google. Read how to use it and what else you need, the information is there.
You need to write the commands to CMD.
But again, if you don't know what your doing then its not a good idea to mess with it.
You can find some guidance here and it is quite simple once you get to understand what you are doing, but as suggested by poisike, shouldn't be underestimated as making a mistake can be costly (ie bricked device).
Install android sdk http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
Download fastboot http://developer.htc.com/adp.html it into the ../platform-tools folder in the sdk path.
Install the moto drivers http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Support-Homepage/Software_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
Make sure your unlocked and rooted. If you have the wifi xoom follow
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010568
or if you cant be assd run oneclick unlock & root for wifi http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011196
Then run the steps in the Tiamat thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978013
And seriously, you should have done more reading and found the prescribed above method yourself.
I've made it! see the attached picture
I would like to thank everybody who replied on me from the person who wrote the advice to the person who put extra details for me.
With your help I'm no longer .. hopefully .. a n00b
I did some reading after your hints and next time I promise I won't ask without reading much
Thanks a lot again!
Hey everyone,
I have a question that I haven't found an answer in the 71 page Timat Kernal post.
I currently have my Xoom root running 1.1.6, no problem. I will be upgrading to 1.3.1 or the next version. What I want to know is will I loss all my apps and data when I upgrade?
Thxs
i have just u/g tiamat , did'nt lose anything , i think its only when you first unlock/root you lose everything , i may stand to be corrected , i can only go from what happened to me , hope this helps

Nope, I assure you that nothing will happen to your data and apps .. it will stay the same
if and only if you are already unlocked/rooted if not then you will lose them when you root your xoom.
Now what are you waiting for
Go ahead and flash the kernel

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. It was the unlocking of the bootloader that wiped the device the first time.
I'm kind of waiting for the next kernel, according to BRD its' rocking fast. As I understand it they removed ALOT of DEBUG code from it.
Cheers
Speak of the devil ... the new kernel is UP!!
Yup, I already installed it

Confused about specifics, would appreciate clarification

Hi all,
I'm attempting to upgrade my Galaxy S Captivate (Rogers) 2.2 stock phone, although it is rooted and unlocked currently. I've read many of the plethora of threads both here and elsewhere, but in all honesty it is a bit overwhelming and I was hoping to get some clarification on some of the specifics and was hoping people here could help.
1) I was hoping to upgrade to 2.3, either stock or a custom ROM. Which ones are good and stable? There are really so many now, I would appreciate a few suggestions. I've looked through many of the threads, but can't really make up my mind.
2) After I choose a ROM, what are the steps for my phone. Should I unroot? Or at least remove the unlock? I was hoping to maybe just have a list of things I should look for in the guides so I know that they're accurate to my specific device and setup.
3) Just to confirm, I should be able to root and unlock with the new ROMs on 2.3, right? Same for lagfix, that was pretty damn useful.
4) Are there any modems which are better than others? Do I do that separately?
Sorry if I seem a bit confused here. Any help people could provide would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Most (not all) kernels have a lagfix (EXT4 file system) option, some don't. It seems RFS has been behaving well for most on 2.3.

Every ROM will have one preloaded by the ROM dev. Modems are very often (geographical) area specific. They're quick and painless to flash so try out a few.
Read/study to info guides and tech terms. And especially- always follow the instruction of the ROM dev before installing- it will help you tremendously.
Thanks for the reply mate. So, I was thinking of using continuum, and I was just hoping to confirm everything as I understand it.
I'm looking at this thread: http://www.team-continuum.net/forum...ses/(guide)general-installation-instructions/
And at this thread: http://www.team-continuum.net/forum...lease)(rom)continuum-6-1-xxjvq-android-2-3-4/
1) My device is NOT the i9000, correct? (Galaxy S Captivate from rogers, I think it's the i896?)
Current Firmware: 2.2
Baseband: I896UXJL1
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
Should I have any problems?
2) I shouldn't need to re-lock my phone or anything. I use titanium backup to copy everything off my phone (I just used the batch backup)
3) Then I update the bootloader with this one (I897UCKF1), and I assume I just download and run the executable while connected?
4) Then I flash the non-i9000 kernel with odin?
5) Finally, I put the phone into recovery, and install continuum from the SD.
6) What apps do I restore from titanium? Just the apps? Or can I move some system settings over too? Might be a bit dangerous.
7) Does doing all of this wipe everything on my internal SD card? And should I take out my external SD before doing all this?
Is that correct, or am I missing something?
Thanks!
Problems can always happen with humans in the mix, but if you follow proper directions you shouldn't have any.
1. No problem there (see answer 3).
2. Make sure you copy your Titanium backup file off of your phone as you will wipe everything during the ROM flash. Not sure what you mean by "re-lock"...
3. Again, just follow the instructions to the letter- icezar (Cezar - Continuum) does well to explain the process in his thread.
4 and 5. See answer 3.
6. Apps only. I may be corrected on this but I believe going from 2.2 to 2.3 it may be best just skip any data at all. As a general rule there are very few scenarios where you would ever load system data from Titanium Backup.
Everything you asked about could be answered by spending some time reading the forums. As for which ROM, only you can answer that. There is no "best" ROM because each person has different needs and ROMs can run differently from phone to phone. Next time, spend some time doing some searches, look through the ROM-specific stickies in Q&A, and read up in the developer's ROM thread in Dev. Personalized service is nice, but this is more of a do-it-yourself forum with helpful, unpaid volunteers.
Yes, and Kona was very helpful. Thanks for that mate.
As I mentioned before, I had indeed read many of the stickies, but there are simply too many versions of the same information and I got a bit confused. It's especially hard when the same device has many different models, and each model can have multiple ROMS, and each ROM has many different versions. Factor in unlocking and rooting, and there are a vast number of possible setups. For someone who hasn't loaded a custom ROM before, that can be a bit daunting. Even the threads that try to keep things in one place can sometimes add to the confusion.

That's why it's better to post to an existing related thread rather than start a new one that just ends up adding to the clutter.

You should use the search function of the forum. All of the questions you asked have been discussed many times and I find it hard to believe that you looked because many of the questions you asked are stickied or are still on the first page. I'm telling you this because there is a lot of information to cover on your questions (many of them could possibly have several different answers) and the easiest way for you to get all of the information you need is to look at what people have already said and done. There is even a "One Stop Shop ICS" thread that is stickied in the DEV section. Nope, I can't believe you even tried...but good luck and read as much as you can. Short-cuts will only get you a bricked phone.
well i have read alot and i think that may be my problem. i have read alot on android 4.0.3 and i have found info that the nexus got it first and this update is way different for the skyrocket. like the user interface is way different. cant seem to find a straight answer on it as people seem to be split on the user interface. thats why i wanted someone who has actually installed it to kinda point me in the right direction on some of my questions. i dont mind reading info but im new to this sight and am just figuring out how to search for info on xda. typing questions in google has gotten me only more confused. ive had good luck on xda in the past and trust the info on this site above any other. if you could copy and paste some links i dont mind doing my own reasearch as a matter of fact i had rather that way i can download what i need as i go..... thanks
ok i found the all things ics forum you were talking about so im gonna read all that info and if i still have any questions ill come back and ask. if anyone has any links to info they feel might help feel free to post them. also if you know of any better ics roms than this leaked one for the skyrocket feel free to post links on those. thanks for pointing me in the right direction now maybe i can find enough info to make up my mind on whether to flash this rom or wait for a better one or the official release.. thanks again...

Start from the top and work your way down. If you have an I727 I would definately only research ICS on the I727 and not any other phone. As you said, they are different. You will also find that there are no 100% answers on a lot of your questions. What works on one phone might act a little different on another. That is why it is better to read and be prepared...just in case.

If you use the "Odin" version (One click Odin with the ICS leak) you will need to put cwm back on your phone via Odin. If you use cwm to install one of the custom ROMS you will retain cwm. Directions on how to put cwm back on your phone can be found in the "DEV" section. If you use the ODIN method you will need to re-root anyway, I prefer Copperhed's method...again, found in the "DEV" section. Good luck.
cwm
well i found a stock rom thats not a odin one click and not from a backup but it is stock. if i put the tar file on my sd can i flash it with cwm and if so will i lose it that way or do i need to find a rom already rooted injected with cwm? sorry for so many questions...

Do not try to flash TAR files through CWM. Only ZIP files (approved for flashing with cwm) can be flashed via CWM. TAR files are for ODIN. I suggest you learn more about the differences before trying anything. There are very direct and clear directions for all of this in the different XDA skyrocket sections (mostly in the "DEV" section). Do yourself a favor and take a week or two to do some reading and learning. Good luck.
reasearch
from all the reading i been doing all day from the everything ics forum its best to flash the odin one click first then flash cwm again and install your choice of custom roms [zip files] since im on gingerbread now. something with the modem and radio is giving alot of problems unless you flash the odin one click first. im gonna take your advice and do alot more reading before i decide. i had a captivate before i got the skyrocket and flashed many different versions thru odin on it but have never flashed a rom with cwm before. so odin or heimdall is not new too me just cwm. but now that i found out about cwm and the way it can backup roms ill never be without it again. its kinda like having life insurance it there if i screw up lol.. thanks for helping me and if i run across anything else im not sure about ill ask cause its better to ask than to mess it all up... ill let you know what i decide and how it turns out... thanks again
Well I made up my mind and flashed the odin one click leaked update of ics. Then used odin to flash clockwork mod and used cwm to then root and make a backup of ics just in case. I restored my apps and data using titanium backup and never lost any data not even on the games I play. Oh and if anyone is wondering this ics update flashing cwm and rooting did not trip the flash counter none of it did. From what I read the flash counter only moves when a custom rom is flashed and this was not a custom rom but a leaked version of stock rom to come. Also flashing cwm does not trip the counter cause you are only flashing a recovery image and not a custom rom and the root didn't cause you are not flashing anything using this method... thanks to all for the help I could not have done this without those who pointed me in the right direction..

[Q] Problems upgrading OTA to 1.63

I recently followed the instructions found at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508406&page=7
Running OTA 1.5 I was able to unlock and flash the su package in clockwork to grant SU privledges on my doubleshot. However, since the release of the 1.63 OTA, I've been unable to update my phone. I download the ~20MB file and am prompted to shut down to apply the update. When I shutdown my phone, clockwork loads up and informs me that my downloaded file fails it's verification signature.
I'm still very new to Android as this is my first smartphone, so I want to appologize in advance for asking such a noob question, but I'm unsure on how to proceed from this point and any help would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot do an OTA upgrade if you are rooted, it will always fail (if you're lucky). If you want the 1.63.531.2 ROM benefits, there are some ROMS available, including the stock ROM with no tweaking (search the forum here) as well as the MikTouch 0.7 ROM which is the latest that has been deodexed and tweaked to run perfectly smooth. Check in the Development forum here.
Thank you for your reply. Flashing custom ROMs was my original intent when I unlocked this phone, but I wanted to get some use out of stock for a bit before I tred into deeper water. I will try flashing the ROMs you've suggested when I'm free from work, maybe give Bulletproof a whirl as I've read good things.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question.

While Bulletproof is a very decent ROM, it is based on the 1.28 release, not the newest 1.63.

Help For Complete Novice To Rooting Android/Custom ROM

First off, I am a complete novice when it comes to rooting so please be gentle with me.
I have one of these Walmart HKC 7" tablets that I would like to use to experiment with in regards to rooting it and putting a newer OS on.
I did some checking around and tried rooting it with Kinkgo Root. It seems like it might have worked, but I have no clue. All the factory installed apps are still there and I would like to get rid of them cause I don't use them and want to free up the space.
How do I know that this tablet has been successfully rooted after running Kingo Root?
Secondly, once I get it rooted, i would like to update/upgrade the OS. Currently it is running Android 4.1.1 and I would like to get a new version for it, but I have no clue as to how any of updating/upgrading to a "Custom ROM" works.
Could someone be so kind as to guide me in the right direction so I can find step by step instructions as to how to update/upgrade to a custom ROM?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice/help/guidance/suggestions anyone has to offer . . .
To check if your device is rooted download root checker from play store then open it, and click check. For the custom rom you need a custom recovery that allows you to install zip from SD card/ internal space or make a backup of your system. So search on internet cwm Walmart HKC 7" and then search Walmart HKC 7" rom

It doesn't seem that there is any custom ROM for your tablet.
To see if you are rooted download and run this app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&hl=ro
If you are not rooted you can try towelroot (will most likely work). Download this app and make it ra1n: https://towelroot.com/ (to download press the Lambda).
Thanks for the replies.
I have downloaded the root check app as suggested. After installing it and running it, the app indicates that this particular tablet has been in fact rooted.
I have also done a search as joe2k01 suggested and only found one thread regarding this tablet (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297246). After reading through the thread, I have no clue as to what this thread is about or whether this is what I am looking for or not.
Since it does not appear that there are any custom ROM's available for this particular tablet, is it possible to find and utilize a "universal" type of Custom ROM?
If this is possible, is there anyone who can suggest such a universal custom ROM that will or might work on this tablet?
Again, thanks in advance for any and all advice, suggestions or input.

Thank you joe.
Since this is one of those Walmart HKC 7" tablets, can you suggest where or how I might find something similar in order to find a custom ROM for this thing?
Would it be appropriate to ask this in the Android Operating Systems forum?
To find a device similar to your you need to know the model number of your tablet, after that you have to search on internet "Model Number" ROM (w/o "). You can also search " Model Number" needrom (w/o "). Needrom is a website where you can find a lot of custom rom.
