Best combo - Samsung Mesmerize

I'm tired of reading 60+ pages on each kernel and rom thread. What combo of rom and kernel seems to be the best? I know everyone is different but looking for the majority..

I using whats in my sig and couldn't be happier. Great performance and decent battery life.

It really depends on what kind of performance (battery life, speed, etc.) you're after, versus what user experience you're after (heavy theming capability, Samsung's default TouchWiz interface versus something more AOSP-based).
I personally use the Mesmerize port of MIUI with the FROIS 2 theme. Because that's AOSP-based, it's REALLY fast, and I don't even think I've had my Voodoo lagfix enabled for a while. It scans my SD card in seconds, whereas on a TouchWiz rom it takes close to a minute.
On the other hand, there are things broken with the AOSP ROMs. If you're the kind of phone user who can live without those things, AOSP-based ROMs can be VERY fast, and VERY pretty.
TouchWiz tend not to be as fast on the whole (YMMV), but they should pretty be rock-solid stable, and still over some fun customizations and themes.
without specific examples, does that at least give you a better idea of which ROM you should check out?

I am really looking for stability and battery life. With the company email always polling and working in a building that has a worse signal than an underground bunker my battery dies in under 8 hours. Right now I am rooted with a stock EC10 voodoo kernel. My big problem now is after being in an area that I lost signal, none of my texts went through. I could get them but not send. A reboot fixed it but dont want it to happen again.
I have been looking at the OTB kernel and JT's voodoo. For a ROM I have been looking at PnP but with the recent issues I have been waiting for the update. The H57 rom seems promising though.

Heinz is good.

For ROMs and burgers. Seriously though it is a great ROM. I couldn't go back to stock and be happy after having this.

Now the 5/7 version of H57 has the kernel included with the zip? So, wipe the phone and install zip from sd and should be good? If so, is it a voodoo kernel? I looked through all 25 pages and didnt see if it was.

It's the OTB-Reloaded version 1.3 - yes it's voodoo

Sweet.. Got it Dl'd and going to flash soon.

Well got it flashed and seems to be working awesome. Only problems i have found is that the camera will freeze up and have to reboot. Changed the scheduler to CFQ and havent tried again. The first thing I noticed that I dont like is that the silent button on the pull down is not there. It has mobile data. I use the silent alot at work and wish it was still there.

I'm not sure about other roms, but with Heinz 57, there are a handful of lockscreen styles that have the ability to silence the phone (turn on/off silence mode). For example I know the Rotary and AOSP unlock screens allow this.
It took a little getting used to, but I'm liking not having to unlock my phone to silence it.

CM7 vs stock android - benefits?

I've had my NS for over 2 months now - love it. Since I bought it, I've been running completely stock android 2.3.3
Like most on this forum, I like to tweak settings and make improvements.
I just want to know if that if I were to root and load CM7 rom on the NS would it improve the speed/battery? (they are the most important factors to me)
Yes it would improve your battery life. Especially when you flash a custom kernel. With this combination, I currently get 24 hours+ with maybe ~30% remaining.
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features are some of the highlights of the features.
Some benefits on top of my head:
Flashing custom kernel (I suggest you do, its easy)
- Voodoo Sound (Better sound quality, you'd be amazed)
- Voodoo Color (Don't like 2.3.3 colors? Change it back to <2.3.3)
- Overclock (If you're into that) or Underclock
- CFS or BFS
Kernel.. i'd go with Netarchy's 1.2.8 CFS
CM7 Benefits
- Widget Folders (When you add a widget, no more 5 widgets showing Beautiful Widgets.. instead its in a folder; better organization)
- Power Widgets (Notification Pulldown)
- If you use your NS as a music player, it adds a lot of features such as lock screen controls. Using volume rocker to adjust volume while phone screen not on.
- Custom Boot Screens
- Sync with Facebook

Thanks for your tips. Before I had my NS I had modded my Hero beyond belief!
Would it be easy to send the phone back to a stock ROM and stock kernel? Lets say I had to send the phone back to Samsung to get warranty repaired.
Following on to that question, which is the best way to root?
How's the stability of CM7 on the NS. I just upgraded from my G1 to the NS yesterday, and I was thinking of just running stock until CM7 goes final.

Yes all you have to do is download a nandroid backup of 2.3.3 or whatever that is stock unrooted. And thats it.
Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
@Apre: It's stable. The latest nightly (#19) is more stable than RC2 itself. And dang G1 lol, I upgraded from a G1 last year in Juneish. Looking back on that phone now, the screens so small.
I have CM7 RC2 and i find that my battery drains faster. How do I flash Netarchy kernel?
Put it in SD and update it? or do I do it the ADB way by putting the kernel in the tools folder and with command prompt?
I ran stock for quite awhile after buying this phone because I didn't see any need for custom ROMs with vanilla Android. But I finally decided to give it a shot, and I'd never go back. Vanilla is great, but CM7 and all the other Custom Roms for the Nexus S (Axura, Modaco, etc) all bring more great features and customizations. If nothing else, however, I'd at least root and flash a custom kernel with stock - so you can have some overclock goodness
Edit: In specific reference to your post's questions, I run Axura, and I get both better battery life AND what seems to be a snappier phone (Axura has Netarchy 1.2.5 kernel baked right in). On CM7 I didn't notice much of a speed boost, and I think my battery life might have actually been a little worse, but CM7 packs in a lot of extra features. So it all comes down to preference.

I was so happy with my stock NS that I'd not bothered with CM (my ROM of choice on Nexus 1) until just two days ago. In the first 24 hours I had two issues that I've not had, or at least not seen in a very long time.
First issue - I was at 84% battery after about 4 hours. Put the phone to the side of my desk and 3 hours later it was 100% drained to 0 battery juice. Status graph showed nothing unusual, not long wakelocks, no time without cell signal, screen on only 1.5 hours.
Second issue - 24 hours after install, while listening to a podcast with my long time app for those that's not given crash issues, the playback goes into a constant stutter loop for about 30 seconds, then the phone rebooted.
EDIT: a third issue, happening right as I type this. I'm happily tethered away on my laptop via the NS with CM7, but I just went to check something on the screen and the phone is locked up...won't respond to power button. Screen is black, menu buttons are lit. Still tethering me, though.
Seems there are still some slight issues. I did full wipe/format before installing and am on the stock CM7 kernel still.

It's an update.zip file you flash from CW recovery. I agree CM7 appears to be harder on the battery.

I suppose that you're technically correct that CM mods never go final because they're always improved, but all prior iterations of CM at least got out of BETA/ReleaseCandidate status at some point.
I fully expect that CM7 will eventually see a version that doesn't have a beta, nightly or RC tacked on to the end of it. Then we'll see all the .x releases with their betas/rc, etc.
I was going to hold off on CM7 until it was past RC stage because I feared it would have some issues, despite all the glowing reports, and it does, but not enough for me to go back to stock. Probably time to flash netarchy on top of this.

I haven't even activated latitude . I don't have background data enabled either. Not sure what is killing the battery life in CM7 ..
Also, if you're interested. Check out frank707's "NS Collab" ROM. It's basically CM7 without ADW launcher, which is good if you like using CM7 but miss the stock launcher or just frankly don't like ADW.

hence why i said.. not sure if its still working even though if latitude is disabled, id disable it anyway
I have tried CM7 and felt that its bugs and constant state of upgrading and updating to fix things caused me too many issues for daily use.
I do think that CM7 does perform a bit better than the other ROMS due to it being AOSP based but i feel thats why there are also some of these bugs.
I have been using AXURA by Master and its been flawless for me, the one issue I had with a reboot was due to testing a new overclock, but now I keep it at 1200 max ondemand and it hasn't gave me any issues, The lack of full easy theme support like CM7 is a con but the performance is up there with CM7 and the stability is sooo much better for me, I feel this is because its the Stock 2.3.3 ROM that has been decomplied and tweaked and then compiled again.
Its worth looking at some of the other options as well.

[Q] Good travel ROM?

I'm going out of town and need something GREAT on battery and functional. What ROM/RADIO/Kernel combo do you recommend?
The best battery I have sren was the 2.1 pick n pack rom with the original voodoo kernel. I used to get 3 days out of that setup with normal use.
Sent from my voodoo froyo Mesmerize
I think the best combo I have used for battery and decent performance was the Heinz 57 ROM and the Imnuts Peanutbutter Jellytime -100 kernel. Now I get good battery out of OTB but it seems like it is good on battey but better for performance. Keep in mind all phones are a little different so you may not have the same results.
Tap-a-Talked
Hummm, How about Evil Mez or Heinz? I like the extra batter life of the 2.1 setup but I don't want to go back to 2.1.
Honestly I can only comment on heinz and pick n pack for 2.2. I got a little more out of heinz and the overall way it looks and its features is why I stayed with it. But that's not to say PnP doesn't have its benifits. I think they all have there advantages. For overall stability I don't think you would go wrong with either PnP or Heinz.

[Q] Compatible Kernel with EE19 Mesmerize PnP

So I got EE19 PnP going on my device and I'm just wondering which Kernel is compatible with this Rom. Will an EC10 Kernel still work with it or do I need to wait for a Kernel built off of EE19?
I've been running the OTB v1.6 without issue. I would think the ec10 kernels would work but I can say that OTB v 1.5 and v 1.6 work fine on the new update.
Tap-a-Talked from my Mesmerize
OK thanks, if you've seen no issue I'll give that one a shot as well.
Under "About Phone" is the kernal version still 2.6.32.9 on the ee19 update? If it is I would imagine you could use any kernal compatible with EC10. If I'm wrong, someone will correct me!
Otb v1.6 works great for me as well. No complications.

@Scarmon I'm running the same EE19 PnP and OTB 1.6, froze every time until i changed juicedefender's cpu setting back to 100-400-1000 (it was default 100-1000-1500) now seems much more stable, but I'm getting some intermittent random reboots, otherwise everything seems cool... But intermittent random reboots suck! All I want is a reasonably stable setup, decent battery life, and extra options on the power menu (reboot, download, recovery etc). Is there a different setup that would work better for me? Like PBJT kernel + EE19? I appreciate any help!
Tristan S
edit: and the thing that started all this was that my mez was putting itself into airplane mode pretty regularly, rebooted, still did it, flushed cache, still did it, battery pull and wait, still did it, and I read up and the consensus seems to be flash ODIN stock, and I noticed that EE19 was out, so I said "well *#*$ it, if I'm using ODIN I might as well flash a custom ROM as well (I was running jt's EC10 kernel, which performed swell) if I'm going to mess with my phone.... Again, any help is greatly appreciated.. I hope I did enough reading before posting so I don't get lit up for being newbish.
Hey. So are using the voltage control app with OTB? If not that may be why the hangups. As for another kernel. It really depends on what your after. I personally loved the OTB kernel. I was always after better performance and decent battery life and that kernel was great. Now pbjt has its perks as well. But its not overclockable and such like OTB. Let me know if ya have voltage control and such and we can figure out what's causin the reboots for tthe most part. Also. How often is it rebooting

Rebooting once an hour, done it two times now? Just disabled voodoo, wiped cache/settings 3x and reflashed OTB1.6, installed voltage control. I think I'll keep voodoo off for now as I seem to be flashing quite often lately. And I have no idea what to do now. All these numbers... I don't really want it overclocked, it's always been more than fast enough for anything I've needed it to do... I'm more concerned with stability than performance. Any suggestions for settings for VC? Thanks again!
PS Am I a moron for buying juicedefender ultimate? It seems to have helped my battery life significantly since I installed it. I've disabled its CPU governer controls assuming that VC has more options and control. Is this correct?

I would start by disabling JD and see how it reacts from there. I had a lot of issues using JD and it completely jacking up both data and phone signals. It serves its purpose but you can do most of what it does manually and avoid the extra headaches it gives you.

[Q] Recommended ROM for functionality, not customization

I just rooted a couple days ago. I went with imnuts Voodoo Lagfix Kernel and also his EE4 Debloated v4.2.1. Coming from the HTC world this is all a little new to me. The #1 reason i rooted was for tethering(I'll take my chances with Big Red) so I know that it doesnt matter which ROM I use for that. But I also want to take advantage of possibly having better battery life and if its possible, increasing my 4g signal. Im in the charge and drain battery process of battery calibration now so i know that should help. But what about the 4g signal? Ive read that gummychared may help that, but is that claim substantiated? One thing is that I DO NOT want to sacrifice stability. I really dont care much about theming or customization, Im actually satisfied with LauncherPro, it customizes all I need. So I guess the question is, which ROM offers the best functionality rather than customization?
I don't think a rom effects signal strength.. Thats more of the radio.. I could be wrong tho.. Alot of people go to humble cus it has great battery life after calibration.. Go with the EE4 edition because its froyo and more stable.. You will need to recalibrate your battery again after you flash tho...... ALSOOOO post questions in general
Sent from the mind-controlled device of @Rsqweezy
just my two cents but i would stay on stock if you want stability since no custom rom is "perfect" (not saying stock is either).
that being said, i've been using gummy for a while and haven't had any major issues. yea, i've had a few random reboots (once every few days) but other than that its great and everything just works.
ahh. sorry. can a mod please move this to general?
I would go Eclipse or Humble if you want more of a stock/non-customized experience.
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyFroyo 1.9.1
eclipse 1.3.1 is the best.
Battery life is 99% dependent on your kernel -- the ROM really doesn't matter at all. And you'll get the best battery life with imnuts' non-overlock PBJ kernel.
Anyways, as far as ROM goes, I'd also recommend Eclipse. Definitely the best ROM if you want to just flash it and be done.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
I'm like you, that my first priority is stability and useability. I started on WM then was in iOS for awhile, and now to Android. As much as I can't stand a lot of the draconian pieces of Apple, I will give them a lot of credit for putting together something that is consistent, seamless and just seems to work.
I've been lukewarm on Eclipse there's some things missing that I need to either repair or go back to Humble for (Namely missing the bluetooth voice dial functionality). I've also experienced some odd anomalies with Eclipse that I didn't see with Humble. I'm curious to try out one of the Gingerbread ROMs- mainly to see if the updated radios make a big difference or not (signal strength=>Battery life). I've also just been waiting on updates to Humble etc too. Haven't tried Gummy yet, and with either Humble or Eclipse I've experienced zero reboots.
As far as battery life goes, I've found that the biggest difference is where you're at (Kernel too)...meaning that when I'm at home or work and on wifi, I get reasonable battery life...if I'm commuting, or out downtown it starts plummeting...I tend to leave 4G on just for convenience...3G seems to be a bit better on battery life, but more often than not I end up on a call and need to look something up and end up turning 4G back on anyway. This is as you've noticed that when Wifi is enabled the cellular data goes off, and wifi is a much lower drain on battery than cellular data.
Check out "Setting Profiles" it's a pretty good app that lets you define profiles for location, time of day etc to control radios etc. If you set location based on GPS that can kill battery, but you can also define location by WiFi SSID which works like a charm. This way when I get home I can crank ringer volume etc, but when at work it's on silent etc. I've noticed minimal if any impact to the battery because of it too.
Thanks for that reply. I think I'm leaning more towards Humble. From what I've read it seems like the simplest, just put it on and leave it alone, type of ROM out there. I wasn't too worried about the look of it as I use Launcherpro but I just also read that Launcherpro might be a bit of a battery drain. So I think I'll load Humble up and see how I like it.
I really liked Humble. I'm running Eclipse right now, because I really liked the color scheme and feel of the theme. Functionally, I think they're both up to par (as was gummy).
I feel like I got better battery with Humble, but I'm not sure. I know its dependent on the kernel, but I also don't know if the packaged kernel was undervolted to make a difference. I just installed pbj oc on my phone today (was running the non oc version before) and am going to see if undervolting makes a tangible difference in battery life. It could just be that the phone has lost that "new feeling" or that Humble was advertised as having great battery life that skewed my perception.
Humble is awesome. It's kind of a bland, non customizable experience with great stability. Never once had any problems with Humble. If you're just looking to have a phone that "works" then I would suggest Humble, don't get it if you like to install themes or do other such things. What you see is what you get.
Eclipse on the other hand is more for customization(like gummycharged with all its themes). It's running a modified TW4 and it looks great, I LOVE all the Galaxy S2 widgets Nitro included in this ROM. That's the only reason I flashed it over humble. It's already got a great looking Honeycomb theme and soon there's going to be a red/black theme. There is only 1 real problem with Eclipse and that's the fact that 'clearing RAM' through your Task Manager can cause TWLauncher(TouchWiz) to close and force restart, basically freezing your phone for a good 15 seconds. It happens alot, I just kicked my habit of clearing RAM since apparently it does that by itself.
So the choice is yours, a bland non customizable ROM with great stability = Humble. An awesome looking ROM with tons of customizations and features = Eclipse
It would be doing a disservice both to the OP and to kejar and teamgummy to not point out that Humble is built off of GC.
They're all solid experiences.
I haven't had to tweak ... anything... really in gummy charged, it's clean and functional, the themes are a nice addition but I use the default theme anyway.

Calling all WeaponG2x Users!

So, after trying out many other roms, I've come to the conclusion that WeaponG2x is the one that works for me. However, I was also wondering if it was stable and smooth because of the stock kernel or is it the rom?
I've been using Weapon for a week and a half now and it runs smoothly, never crashes on me, never have to pull battery, and I did realize that battery was better than the previous roms.
Now I want to know if I should use any other custom kernel(overclocked or not)? The roms runs great, except I noticed that it lags a bit here and there, but not too much. Like when i'm downloading an app, the screen will be still for like 1 milisecond when it's installing. That's probably the trade off for the decent battery life, but I'm not sure.
So what kernel are you guys using with Weapon? Let me know, I've been thinking about using Faux kernel, overclock it to about 1100 with SetCPU. But im worried it'll have a major impact on battery life.
Thanks.

That lag when installing apps is an Android problem, not ROM. I believe Google fixed that in ICS. If it ain't broke no need to fix it is what I believe, so I say just stick with what kernel you already have.
But if you really wanna try something new then try the Dragon Kernel that was repacked by Mr.Apocalypse. Or you can try Faux's. But make sure you try the one that's for the 2.3.3 GB OTA by Faux, not the CM7 version.
Stay with stock kernel. Since no drivers for the kernel were ever released, technically stock is the best aside from the tweaks, but then it becomes a sort of ported kernel.

Wise choice. Weapon is a great rom. Back it up and try "new clip". Follow the instructions and give it time to settle. There is a new updated weapon rom coming soon. In new clip you will get fast GPS locks. Fast/quick interface. Very nice. The one quibble is clock placement.

Anyways I have been using weapon r1 3.0 for about a week now, everything is stable and smooth, however gps isnt exactly the fastest, often it doesnt even lock indoor (which, my old phone does). Takes roughly 15s-1m to get a lock outdoor too. I personally think that is slow.
Other than the gps, i am fairly satisfied with the WeaponG2x_30_R1_1022.

Sorry for the typo. It is "New Clip". New Clip is new revision by Kwes1020. He has taken ownership of the rom now that the original dev no longer has a G2x. GPS is much improved and the entire interface has been tweaked for a smoother faster response. It is flashed over Weapon from CWM. It retains all your settings, apps etc. It is a worthy upgrade. Soon there will be an all new version of Weapon, but for now it is the best solution.Try it, you will like it.
Yep... I've tried about 3 or 4 roms before I came up weapon.... This is definitely the most stable by far. Have no issues with it in about 3 weeks now. Also don't suffer from the SoD anymore either.
Tried CM7 Stable looked nice but had SOD issues on lock
then i used root explorer to flush out the bloat ware and ran that for a few hours and backed it up and installed
weapon_r, only problem seemed to be if i rebooted i had to re install from backup need for speed and the nova demo. or they would crash boot on start. but
just flashed new clip and after reboot no lockup on need for speed or nova!
love this rom.....everything works and lots of options. nice and fast (maybe too fast) i was used to a ginger lol optimums t that i gave to my mom after disablement of data(she can use wi fi) i'm not paying for a data line for her.
I tried out faux's kernel but I don't like it. Either it's the kernel or setcpu's default values, but my phone keeps turning off randomly over night.
How do I go back to weapon's kernel without flashing the whole rom again?

Boot into CWM
Flash Weapon
Flash New Clip (optional)
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Reboot
All settings should be retained. I remember reading somewhere that when you change kernels, you should go into application management and clear data and cache from SetCPU or some of the old settings will be used. Not sure if that's true or not. And actually, maybe that was the original problem for you on faux's kernel. *shrug*
I didn't have SetCPU prior to faux kernel... I wanted to try overclocking and my phone would randomly shut off. So I just left the values at default and it still did it.
Bumping since I have another question.
Every now and then on the home screen, when i try to slide to the next screen, the screen will pan out and show all of my home screens instead. I'm not sure how to change it back without rebooting.
Anyone know what I might have did?

If your using go launcher you can set the swipe up and swipe down on your homescreen to do stuff I disable it cause its annoying.
Edit: On your homescreen (assuming you have go launcher) > preferences > gestures > glide up > select the option 'disable'
Make sure you do the same thing with "glide down" option.
Pin it to Win it.
