Wow. GPS hardware problem is finally acknowledged? - Captivate General

I just got back from a local ATT Device Support center. I told them my GPS hasn't worked since day one and none of the updates fixed anything.
The technician working there said "oh yeah, any captivates made before November of last year have a hardware defect."
No questions asked, he simply swapped out my phone for a newer one, and I was blown away by how fast and robust the GPS fix was.
I've spent the better part of the last year trolling these forums, trying every ROM and GPS fix that claimed to improve GPS.
I can't believe that ATT is now silently acknowledging this problem by swapping out phones. More incredibly, I can't believe I haven't read about this on XDA yet. Maybe it was mentioned and maybe I missed it. But from all the active threads about GPS fixes, I assume it's not common knowledge.
For anybody considering this, you don't even need a receipt. ATT bought out the Samsung warranty so they handle it on the spot. If you bought your phone before November, they can look that up and hand you a new one.

My Captivate's build number is 1007. Is the GPS problem fixed?

Old news.
the same is also true if your captivate has the random shut down bug.
But then again if it is ANY kind of hardware malfunction it's still under warranty...

YES.
Just look up "Device Warranty Support" here to find the nearest center:
http://www.att.com/storelocator/
I was in and out in 5 minutes with a new phone. GPS is rock solid, all the time.
The most AMAZING thing was just the fact that the two guys working there openly acknowledged that GPS sucked on the early builds and apparently they've been replacing lots of captivates since December.

Fine. Old news maybe.
But the fact that I spent so much time reading these forums and tech blogs and I didn't know about it means there are probably a lot of people out there who still don't know.
And all the threads plugging GPS tweaks are just confusing the heck out of the masses. It's simple: Just swap out the phone

I swapped mine earlier this year and the GPS still sucks on it! How can I find out if it was built before November?

The build number on your phone. Under the battery, the 4 digit number is a date. First 2 year, second 2 month. Mine uss a 1010 so it was built in oct if 2010.

Lol...my build number is GR-12
Edit: "under the battery" never mind!

Is that even possible? I bought mine on day 1 and it's 1006. That's crazy!

OP what is the built number under the battery? Did they give you a refurb or a new one out of the box? I had a 1009 that had horrible gps and switched it out for a 1008 that was solid but had the random shutdowns. Switch it out for another 1008 with terrible gps... Then I switched it out again for another 1008 with perfect gps lol.

if you get a refurb there is no guarantee the build date under the battery has ANY correlation to the build date of the motherboard inside.
refurbs are a franken mix of old and new parts!
and "below par" gps would hardly be reason for THEM to throw em out..
i would.

Tbh I think refurbished units are just units that didnt pass the qualifying testing standards. Tossed back and fix'ed and distributed as refurbished. Out of the ones I all had there were no blemishes at all. Never even the common wear marks on the edges or sliding doors.

wanna have another wack at that one? if they dont pass tests, they dont work. if they dont work how can they be given back out?
" Tossed back and fix'ed" - ya FIXED!! fixed with NEW PARTS, some are inside! some are outside. some you see some you dont...
"Out of the ones I all had there were no blemishes at all" - ya thats what Quality Control Standards are for! you are lucky because in your agreement it says that a refurb MAY contain some signs of use.

I bought my captivate off craigslist and the little GPS golden tab is broken off... am I still eligible? X_X

if you buy anything off craigs list you dont have warranty, unless you have original receipt... and even that is pushing the line...

so buying off craigslist voids my manufactures warranty? o_o

Conversation with samsung support about GPS

I had this conversation with a samsung support tech earlier today, you can make your own deductions but i think we are screwed because according to him the epic launched with the GPS fix already applied and as we all know from recent posts and videos the accuracy is still ****.....
Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Dan'
Dan: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Dan: How may I help you?
Visitor: hi Dan, i have a captivate from ATT and the gps is terrible, is there a fix that is coming because i am really tempted to return this phone
Dan: I understand that you need to have update about GPS.
Dan: I am sorry for inconvenience caused to you.
Dan: Our support team as been working on issue with GPS.
Dan: We will have GPS update fixed by end if september.
Visitor: was the epic 4g or the fascinate launched with fix already applied to the gps ?
Dan: We have Epic released but we do not have any customers with GPS issue.
Visitor: so thge answer would be yes the fix is applied to the epic ?
Dan: To be honest yes.
Dan: However we will have GPS issue fixed.
Visitor: i have a freind with the epic and the gps is still terrible but from what you are telling me it's fixed.
Dan: I am sorry for inconvenience caused.
Visitor: ok, thanks for your time
Dan: We have many customers with Epic , but we did not have any issue with GPS.
Dan: Once we have update released it will be OTA,
Visitor: ok
Dan: Update will fix the issue.
Dan: Please let me know if I can be of any further help.
Visitor: that's it, thank you
Dan: You're most welcome.
Dan: It was a pleasure assisting you. Thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support.
According to the way that guy conversates, I wouldnt take much of what he said into consideration lol.
I have worked for Tech giant manufacturers (more then one) - and I know for a fact that the tech support people (usually 1st through 3rd level) have no idea about fixes or releases. They are not told until after things are out.
The idea that any of these guys would know that GPS in Epic is fixed, or was released with the fix that other Galaxy S phones are waiting for is doubtful.
Until an official statement is made, I won't believe anything I hear from anyone in Samsung support. Their job is to log an issue, be nice to the customer, and fix something if they can.
So why worry about it at all until some official notification comes out? If GPS is still broken, we can take our phones back as they are not meeting basic functionality requirements - if that is what people want to do.
Two months in and no GPS fix. I will reconsider before I buy a Samsung phone ever againg. Product support suck.

God you people cry way too much. Why does gps on your phone bother you so much? I am a truck driver and need directions EVERY DAY. But unlike you i guess i have the ability to read a map. And even with sketchy gps it gets me in the general direction i gotta go. Stop all the crying already. Want great GPS get a damn gps unit. I have a few i will sell you since i dont use them anymore. And return your worthless phones. Rant /off
GPS on the Samsung Eternity worked great. Wonder what the difference is.
Am I missing something? My GPS works great, I've had no problems at all. If there's anything I can provide somehow to help you guys, let me know.
Hell, I've even gotten a good signal sitting in my living room; on Google maps it even showed my location in my house properly.
If there are files or something I can pull from my phone for you, I'll do what I can.

This is so true, agree 100%. Plus, I think you kind of led him to say that the Epic had the fix by you actually mentioning it. He said yes and that was pretty much it.

Agreed, anything outside of a building and the GPS works great. I've been using it to geocache, and also have a boating gps app installed and used it flawlessly this past weekend. I can drive anywhere in my car and the GPS will not lose me once.
The only time I get a long signal search is after a week of not using the GPS function, then it takes only about 30 sec's to lock on.

I wouldn't rely on the GPS in my Captivate or any phone for that matter for flight ops. But, I do agree that if the phone says it has GPS, it should have GPS working when you buy it at the store. Doesn't matter if it's a nice-to-have feature or a core function. If it says it has GPS, then it should work.
I am hoping that this was a last minute configuration/software defect that was re-introduced following QA. There's no way a phone should be able to exit QA with such an alarmingly big severity 1 defect.

Dude. Cool. You answered my question. That's why I asked. I personally couldn't care less about the gps. it works good enough for me.
Sorry you broke your eternity. i had mine for two years. was dropped/thrown/punched countless times, the moisture label was bright red, but i never had a single issue with that phone other than when using opera mini and sometimes i would click a link and it would just refresh the page. a buddy of mine got one shortly after i did. he finally just broke his screen last week. cracks all through it and a couple "chunks" from the screen gone, but it still works. still texts on it like crazy. that thing is sturdy.
Smokestack...... Would you not complain if you bought a truck and found out it had the wheels missing?
I bought a device that is supposed to have GPS but doesn't. All I want is what I paid for. My reason for wanting it does not matter. I will never buy another samsung phone. If it hours totally unresolved I will never buy anything Samsung.
I totally believe this was/is an intentional scam. Then on top of it the reduced speed and forced data plan change.
I'm not happy and wish I could send this otherwise good phone back.

Bad analogy. A truck needs wheels to be able to serve it's purpose. A phone doesn't need GPS to work as a phone. Maybe saying something along the lines of air conditioning, it's an added bonus, such as the GPS. don't mind me, just sayin....
gotta kill these last few minutes at work some how. And you really think it's an intentional scam? take off the tinfoil hat...

Return your phone then. If you are out of the 30 days, you still have a valid case for returning it - but watch you say:
- GPS is known issue that Samsung has acknowledged.
- reduced speed? Where? HSUPA was never spec'd so you won't win that one - just because other phones have it, doesn't mean all do.
- forced data plan change - clearly spelled out what data plans work with the phone - if you don't like it, don't buy it.
So your GPS complaint is valid, and if the phone doesn't serve its advertised purpose then return it. There is no international conspiracy. maybe samsung knew about the GPS issue before they shipped, maybe not. Dev's are flashing new firmwares all the time - and it could have slipped through a rushed QA cycle.
Instead of complaining do something about. If the product doesn't work take it back. The iFools should have done this.
I think it's best for us to keep reminding Samsung that this is important. I just did here: http://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobile
Hello to all,
I did take my first phone back to att because of gps problem, we try 5 phones before she got one with working gps it takes up to 10 seconds to lock the signal.

Newly produced G2x Today

Well, I've been cringing thinking about getting the G2x due to the large post with all the flaws etc. But after getting over it and going to the T-Mobile store in my area i just received a phone with a manufacture date of 4/29/11 and so far;
No LCD bleeding
No random reboots (as of yet)
No auto shut downs
No wifi issues
No reception issues
Battery life is great (first booted the phone, charged to 100%, then immediately did a factory reset)
So basically if you're interested in getting this phone, don't listen to all the hype (which almost got me to not get it)
Just make sure you're asking for the latest manufactured date.
(either the date has something to do with it, or i'm just 1 lucky son of a...)

Which store? I have to referee out at the Field of Dreams tomorrow and I would not mind swinging by to see if they have any more of these pristine phones
It is at the fiesta mall area around alma school
Not to doubt you, but there's no physical way the phone could leave the production line in Korea, get to a shipping depot, make the trans-pacific trip, get to a T-Mobile distribution center in the U.S., and to a T-Mobile outlet in Arizona in four days.

G2X No Longer on T-Mobiles Website

So if you go to T-Mobile's site and search for the G2x the only products that come up are the home dock and the car dock.
Any ideas as to why this could be?
Edit: was told the phone was on backorder via chat with rep. Sounds fishy. Even if the phone were on backorder they would still sell the phone and advise the purchaser that it was on backorder.

Wow
Wow, either they are admitting there are problems and removing it from sale for now or just an error. Gotta swing by a store and see if they still have it.
I notice they advertise it on their main page, but if you go to shop all phones its not there.... very weird. Hopefully they're not ditching out on the phone

If it is a QC issue I wonder what T-Mobile will do about it. Complete refunds or exchanges of similar devices - i.e., Sensation.
I doubt they would drop the product all together or that they will issue refunds or excahnges. My theory is that they might stop sales until a update is released.

If they did pull it for QC issues I really hope they do either give me a refund or exchange it for a comparable device (sensation I'm guessing)
Just remember the G1... they pulled it out of the lineup to catch up. Same thing went for the HD2, and a few others. You'll notice the magenta sidekick is in the same boat for upgrades. It's not quality, it's "we way oversold." I confirmed this with a friend that works in a call center.
Omitted !!!!

Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Why do people care so much whether your current phone is on the website or not? I understand people interested in buying it but why do you care if you already have a G2X? You have a T-Mobile and Manufacturer warranty and if you are worried, return the phone.
My phone is far from perfect but yet the G2X is still the best phone I've ever owned. I couldn't care less if they stopped selling it. Might actually be cool to have a limited edition phone

Ur obviously not getting the point here. If they pulled the device for Qc issues and they push out new versions or fixed devices then ppl who already have the phone that has issues want to know if they can get a replacements. You have the device and it mysteriously disappears from tmo site, wouldn't I concerned that ur device is faulty
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
just spoke to TMO, they said they have no information about it but I spoke to an account specialist in customer loyalty and asked if it does turn out to be true would they offer refunds or replace the phone, they said yes they would if it ends up to be true. They would either repair it, replace it(Guess when they fix the issues) or give a like device

I have an N1 so when I took back my G2x went back to it. I am patient and await the out of come of this craziness to determine wheter I'm going to just wait for the Hercules to come out. I refuse to get another HTC device until they fix their battery consumption issues.
I got stuck on a trip - my G2X battery started getting EXTREMELY hot and eventually would not charge past 20% - and had to go get another phone. No choice, had to have a phone.
TMobile was "kind" enough to replace my battery, despite the fact that the G2x constantly reboots, and has screen bleed.

Screen Bleed Swap out days are over

After only a single attempt at a warranty replacement I finally got word from TMO today that they will no longer swap handset's for screen bleeding issues. The rep told me that it is now considered a known issue and will not swap anymore phones because they know that the new one will have the same issues as well. I asked if she knew anymore information about it and she said the only thing that they know is that LG is working on a permanent fix.
I asked if that meant a new handset for those with the screen issue and of course she did not know but also stated that the fix/replace/repair is definitely a hardware problem and LG is expected to make right on it. So for now Ill deal with random reboots, shutdowns, and crappy battery until the update. I'm just curious on how they are going to remedy the situation. Hopefully a release comes out soon at least identifying the issue.
So if you can still trade in then by all means go for it. I have had two reps tell me now that as of the 24th, they no longer exchange due to screen bleed. I didnt push the issue on a new phone cause I like this phone and want to see how it all turns out now that LG has the ball.

I bet, this has been a huge farce for both companies, maybe both will come out of this having learnt something though..............yeah right!!!! lol
On another note I did speak with a CSR today her name was Nicole. She told me she could exchange for another if I wanted or she could offer me a nice discount on another phone. I rejected both, I was just trying to fish for information. So maybe the whole we are not replacing news hasn't filtered down to everyone yet, or you just got a rep that is tired of exchanging out G2X's

Ha... I've swapped out over 5 Mytouch 4Gs and the best way to go about it is through the chat on their website.
It all depends on the Rep. I read on the MT4G forum they quit swapping out phones for the screen issue with that phone... It's a wash. Depends on who you talk to and how their day is going apparently.
If at first you don't succeed... Call another rep... LOL
unless they notate the account and we get a sweet big red pop up saying DONT DO IT when you walk into a brick and mortar.

It's really an easy fix.....they just need to limit the backlight output to about 45% of the current max.
The screen bleed will almost never be visible, at that new max brightness. Of course when outside, and you want to kick up the brightness to max....it just won't perform the same.
The Optimus Black is supposed to be the new NOVA screens....I have not bothered to check to see what the bleed complaints are over there. Switching out the G2x to the NOVA screen as an undocumented upgrade would not be out of the question.

I've heard the Nova displays are supposed to perform good in direct sunlight but Vlad from Engadget said it falls well short of performing well in direct sunlight.

This is totally YMMV with the reps. She had to take some time and look it up in the "knowledge base" and said that she learned something new. It may have just been me but the rude chat representative and now the rep from the phonecall said the same thing. I guess it all depends on how much you push. I was most happy just to know that now it is seen as a legitimate issue by both TMO and LG and am waiting for the resolve.
I just got one swapped out yesterday. They gave me free overnight shipping too. This is like the 5th time, if its not free I guess I'm confident ill get to keep it. You see I learned during my call yesterday that they now charge five bucks for using warranty, that's a change in contract, 30 days to reject the new changes. Even still, I'm on my 5th G2X, completelly unacceptable!

See this is an example of why t-mobile sucks. They've sold phones that THEY KNOW ARE DEFECTIVE...and won't replace them. I understand it'd be stupid to replace them with another G2X - but they should a) give us our money back or b) exchange it for another phone like the sensation or mytouch4G. The fact that they don't is probably grounds for a lawsuit. If anyone is interested I'm thinking of filing one.
Luckily for me, I only had to swap mine once to get a phone without backlight bleed. Even on max, it's hardly noticeable. My first one was horrible, even below 50%. Now, the wait for an update begins.
im getting a replacement but there charging me 20 bucks to do so! i got the shiz end of the deal
Or they could directly seal the screen to the glass like. In the iphone and galaxy s lineup

They are offering the mytouch 4g for exchange. They hard one to get them to do is the exchange to the sensation.

Please look at the date of the last post before reviving dead threads.
People r still having to swap out the phones, so it is still relevant.

Not necessarily. If you bring up prices in asking for a replacement (i.e. I paid $180 for my G2x and Sensation is now cheaper) they'll frequently feel pressured into sending you one. My brother swapped his out for a Sensation, claimed the Sensy had overheating problems, and got a replacement MT4G Slide.
When I popped that response into the google narcissism translator, this is what it spit out: i wanted to post something that offers zero value to this thread, xda, or anyone else in this world. As a matter of fact, I wanted to post something that has zero value for a single thing on this entire earth, outside of puffing up my ego. I'm so thankful I have avenues such as the internet to sharpen and feed my narcissism. I'm so full now.. I'm so happy. I feel great. Wow, it's like a drug. I hope someone argues with my stance so I can keep getting fed....

tmobile: a new model of the g2x?

So im on the phone with cs right now, doing a battery exchange, and the rep tells me if i had wanted to exchange my phone, i would get a new model that would be improved? odd news... is it just the rep spitting random nonsense?
my current one is the lg-p999dw
You picked the new model?

You will get one with 2.3.3 and July baseband - period!
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
sadly no, my idiot rep transfered me to the freakin htc line, which made no sense whatsoever even though i reminded her that the g2x was made by lg.... wowtmobilefail.
I just got an exchange that is apparently a refurb (per LG update I have the DMP series). My previous 2 G2x's were new. I was worried that I would get a lemon. My refurb is PERFECT.
you mean dwp?
He probably meant the 2.3.3 OS and new baseband. The hardware is going to be the same.
Remember, cs reps are used to dealing with clueless idiots who legitimately do not know the difference between hardware and software.

I still haven't updated to the new baseband. But if TMO came out with a new model for the G2x because the original "were junk" then they'd have a big issue on their hands.
My G2x is fantastic but I would want a piece of the action.
Sadly (or realistically) the rep doesn't know. They hear "updated G2x" and process "new G2x".
Remember, to most people at Tmobile, it is just a job. Most of them aren't phone enthusiasts like us nerds.

duuude that realllllllllly sucks.
I work at LG in the service division. There is no new P999. Basically we just reflashed all of our current stock. It was a huge pain. I'm not sure about switching LCD's, but we did switch front case (including window) manufacturers. I'm not sure if it was because of the bleeding, but to be honest, I still see a little bit of bleeding in mine and I'm pretty sure I have the front case from the new manufacturer.

well i just got mine today from tmobiles customer service. i did notice a little bit of bleeding but not much at all and i dont see what the big deal is. it doesnt look bad at all and i can only see it if its completely dark in the room and i got the brightness up all the way and it has a black image or using the draw app in the market. so far no reboots for me. i think i got the newer device since i got gingerbread pre installed when i got the phone. i just wish it had the green on the 4g icon and cell service part.
just got rid of the sensation 4g for this g2x and i gotta say it was the best move i ever done. g2x is so much faster then the sensation 4g its not even funny.
