Hi I'm new here and have a few questions. I downloaded some apps off the web but when they are updated I cannot update them using the market. Is there any way for me to update them or add them to the "My Downloads" list in the market? If I root my phone, but do not install a custom rom will I still get ota updates, be able to install market apps, and so on?

Phone: Nexus One (T-Mobile Version)
Android Version: 2.2 FroYo FRF50 (love it)
If you guys need baseband and kernel information let me know. Also, what it different in stock froyo vs cyanmod vs any other rom? Sorry if this is in the wrong place to post this and the length.
Hi there, as of right now all that I can point you towards for you apps would be an app called apktor that can be found in the market the rest you will have to figure out on your own. Or you could also just redownload these apps through the market...
From what I have read besically when you root your phone you give up any chance to be able to OTA update. BTW I have a Telus Milestone so I am not sure about the phone you have because it might be different but I think it would be a global rule of Rooting= No OTA... Although while being rooted you can install apps from the market.
About the custom roms you will have to do some reading untill the Milestone's boot gets cracked I won't have a chance to play around with any roms, I guess best advice would be read read read and read some more. And after you have done all that reading, choose a couple of roms that interest you try each one for atleast a day and find the one that you like. If there was a best rom, there wouldn't be such a wide variety of them...

Nope, even if your phone has root you can still update apps via the market. I know because I updated my apps via this way. 2 Rules apply though.
1) The apps that you downloaded off the web are freeware and are also on the market.
2) The apps that you downloaded off the web AREN'T warez. (I'd suspect that's what you're trying to do, but do correct me if i'm wrong)
It is highly unlikely that in following these 2 simple rules you still can't update via market.
Hi, I am new to the world of smart phones and would like to learn more about them. I've been reading threads about people changing their ROMs and how it can affect future software updates.
I've done some searching w/ "what is a rom" and "stock rom" but the results are in techno-wiz-lingo that's right over my head.
I have two (pretty basic) questions regarding ROMs.
1. What is a rom?
and
2. If I use Titanium Backup (and install its corresponding busybox), does this change my ROM?

We all were there sometime in past, so no problem.
1. A ROM is a part of a non-volatile non-"erasable" memory in phone that hold the operating system and main applications; you can compare it to a premade install of an operating system in a Desktop computer (for example: windows 7 and what manufacturer applications has installed), the difference is that you can't modifiy a ROM directly from inside the phone.
Now, smartphones comes also with premade install os the OS, that's called 'stock ROM', a ROM that come from the phone manufacturer; some people are able to extract ROMs from certain models and modify (kitchen) it, fixing bugs, adding new features, even upgrading main OS version, in short improving what came from the manufacturer that's called 'custom ROM' and that's what xda-developers is all about, in the several forums you will see sections where they talk about improving phone usability.
2. I have no much experience with Android but it seems that titanium backup can backup all your user data, so you can flash a custom ROM to your phone then restore you user data back to your phone, so you won't need to readd everything back at hand (usually when you flash a new ROM to your phone, everything is wiped out and the phone is left blank).

I have no Google Play store icon anywhere. I see the Google Play process running in the background.
but have no way to get it to show up. This on a fresh ROM, all User data, Cache, and all that cleared.
Any help on this would be nice.
Would of asked on that post where I got the ROM. but I don't have the patience to or any thoughts about other post to make to meet the requirements to even post there.

Are you sure you are using the right GApps package? That's Rasheds ROM you're referring to using. Build 7 is Android 4.1.2. Check this link here. And some of the problems you may be experiencing could be due to a faulty installation because of limited system space. You may want to review the LG Optimus One FAQ too.

There is more then enough internal space. (150MB Free after Gapps Flashed).
I tried again with the Gapps for 4.1.2. At the time my post I re flashed the ROM but left it out. I didn't flash it.
When I tried again. I got the Updating Android. but still no Play Store Icon. However it did not break my home or other buttons.
and browser still working. but again. no Play Store icon.
I checked the FAQ. Currently i see nothing there to give hints. I got more then enough free space. I've flashed ROMs on this phone dozens of times so I know the whole wiping of cache and data and all that between each ROM.

You have to trim the Rom, there's not enough SYSTEM space for the Rom and Gapps..this has been discussed time and time again on rashed thread(cm10)..There's a tool ( Oone Rom editor that will help you do this) This is why you have the bugs that your facing.

I used that program already. looking at all that it would only show.
the math dont even come to half of what the phone memory is.

The system partition has nothing to do with the devices memory. These devices have a 190 MB system partition, this is where Android gets installed. What you are referring to is the user data partition which is 200 MB, while the device has 415 MB+- RAM ( memory ). Unless you are using Android 4.2.2, the only way to see how much space is on the system partition is with a third party app, with ADB, or with a Terminal Emulator app on the device. The math isn't adding up because you don't understand it, that's why I pointed you to the FAQ thread.
I wrote OOne ROM Editor. I haven't put hundreds, yes hundreds, of hours in to it's development just for general pleasure. It was written for a specific purpose, to trim ICS and newer ROMs for devices with small or limited system partitions.

I dont know what to try to trim with that program. i dont know what half them apps do.
Like Exchange2.apk. I don't know what that is. Which are some of the key things i can trim?
Also, Telling me how many hours you put into a program and that i dont understand something not going to be on my good side. So i missed something, big deal. I just got off a anxiety attack. and i was needing was a simple answer. doing a search for "LG P509 No Playstore Icon" was getting me no where and i didnt want to have to search page by page of the 487 pages of the ROMs post to find clues.

The help docs in OOne ROM Editor's thread list some of the known files that can be removed from and or moved around, ie; converted to user app, in the ROM.

Every time i try to Build the ROM and put it on the phone CWM just says its bad.

Are you getting an "assert() failed" message? If you are using CWM 5.0.2.7 Touch, it will only allow you to install P500 ROMs. OOne ROM Editor has the ability to remove the "assert()" statement from the ROM's updater-script to prevent that particular error from happening. Before building the ROM, go to the Tools->Build submenu and select the Build Options command. Check the checkbox for "Remove updater-script 'assert()' statement". Then build the ROM.
And stress... You call editing a ROM stress? Try writing the code for OOne ROM Editor Or better yet, play with live electricity :silly: - oh wait I do that already since I am an electrician... DOn't get frustrated by it. Sit back relax and soak in some of the knowledge around here.

Again bad, day. had a Anxiety attack. haven't slept. I havent played with Android as often as other things. I am also a Electronic person. Soldering Caps and so on on motherboards all the time. So please dont talk like that to people you dont know. they may have plenty of knowledge. but maybe having whats called a short fuse kinda day.
Also I did do "Remove updater-script 'assert()' statement". And i get no error from OOne ROM Editor it was in CWM it would just say it was bad, or say nothing at it would just restart CWM. Ill try again when Im better. Right now my phone has CWM 5.0.2.0, So ill change that as well when i try again.
but right im turning in for the night.

Sorry you're having a bad day. Rest assured, if I was talking down to you, there wouldn't be any smilies. I was just expressing that you weren't the only one out there with stress in their life, and some of us have loads of it. On that note, I'm not one of the many teenagers around here. So I'm not talking down to you, but out of experience. My teenage years were gone 23 years ago. Apparently it was take outta context, Sorry.
I think the issue I mentioned for CWM 5.0.2.7 is a shared issue with CWM 5.0.2.0, but I can't say for sure as I don't recall ever using CWM 5.0.2.0. I wasn't suggesting changing to the CWM I mentioned, was asking if that was the one you were/are using, which you've now stated you aren't. There error I was referring to would have been from CWM after flashing or trying to flash a ROM.

Can that program add apps? If so or not. maybe I can edit the zip directly. but is it possible to port the old music player in Gingerbread to JB. I don't like Apollo. or would it just be better to remove Apollo and find something I like in Play store when i make this work?
And should i try to use CWM 5.0.2.7 instead, and try again?

EDIT 2: just ROM Manger being a butt. going to the site directly. I see CWM 5.0.2.7 as the latest.

Yes apps can be added, but only as User Apps. Select "User Apps" in the treeview on the left. Then right click on the listview on the right and select the "Add apps" command item. A file dialog will appear. Multiple file selection is allowed.
You can remove Apollo. I prefer Google Play Music myself.
For your recovery. CWM 5.0.2.7 will only allow installing P500 ROMs. I do prefer the touch version of CWM, and since P509 is identical to P500, it's really not an issue other than baseband which is solved with a flashable patch. I really cannot recommend a recovery as we all have different likes/dislikes/usage patterns. I would recommend not using ROM Manager to install a recovery. It's been known to be faulty with our devices. Theres always ADB and fastboot or another one of my tools, Android Flash Recovery. There are several other apps around XDA that can do this also.

Ill just leave it be then. Its always worked for me. if there was a problem it was with the ROM.
I haven't tried Google Play music before. but is it possible to port the music player from Gingerbread to JB?
but I'm getting the jiffs of that program. I just need to play with it. some things I converted to User apps never loaded at all.
So I need to play with what I can put in User data that will still work. but none the less i been getting the builds to install.
And even show Play Store again.
Just need to mess with what works and dont in User data.

Is there anyway you can post the updater-scipt from one of the builds you've made with OOne ROM Editor where you've modified the LatinIME.apk and specified to install as a User App? The updater-script is located in the /META-INF/com/google/android folder in the output/build ROM.
One thing to note tho, build options are reset after every build.

I noticed that it resets everytime. so i been ontop of that. I check both boxes in the build options before I build them.
I did read also not to delete LatinME.apk. and use the editor. But i know the LatinME is a nice chunk of Memory.
So to make it smaller and usable in User apps is plus to make the important things I need working.

and I just did. now keyboard working. But I think that build I didn't tell it to put Latin in User apps that time.

I can't tell what you installed as user apps from the updater-script, but there were apps installed to the user ( data ) partition. And the assert() statement is missing from the script, so I know that option was checked in the Build Options.
The reason I say not to manually move it is because the LatinIME Keyboard Editor should be used to edit it's dictionaries. Once you press the "Apply" button in the LatinIME Keyboard Editor, it removes the LatinIME.apk from System Apps and actually puts it in the apps Recycle Bin. I use the list of files in the Recycle Bin as a filter of files not to include when building the ROM. LatinIME Keyboard Editor also looks in the Recycle Bin for the LatinIME.apk if it can't find it in System Apps but it assumes that it's deleted so it won't do anything.
I am actually working on OOne ROM Editor right now. So you can be on the lookout for an update

Well I got everything to work. Keyboard, Play Store, etc. But not sure ill stick with trying to put JB on the phone.
Its really slow. Unless more free space on the system partition would allow it to run faster.
Would your OOne ROOM Editor work on Any rom Like a CM7 Rom? or just JB ones? if not would you consider support for other roms?
I haven't tried, but figure I would ask.

OOne ROM Editor is just for ICS and JB ROMs. It's really not needed for Android versions prior to 4.0.
So ever since I heard about rooting Android devices I innediately done some research on how to do it and I did it. I have had this root on my Samsung Grand Duos for a while now and all I have done is have a few apps (Lucky patcher, Freedom, and Exposed with 1 plugin or w.e) and I am pretty sure I can do far more than just that, so that's why I made this thread. I have a few questions I would like to be answered if you know anything about it.
1) What are customs ROMs and what can I use them for?
2) I am a developer and I have helped make some apps for both iOS and Android, would my root be useful in any way?
3) When I tried to upgrade my version of Android it told me that my version was modified, is there any way I can upgrade to the latest version? And would it remove my root?
4) Is root only compitable with specific versions? Like when a new version comes out, can you root it immediately or do you have to wait for something to do the root process again?
5)My device storage is pretty small and it makes it a pain in the ass to install apps, is there any way that I can edit that? (I am probably going crazy with this. lol)

1) 3) 4) a custom Rom is a modified android, mostly based on clean aosp. The example CyanogenMod: you can choose between different Android versions. And with a custom ROM you have great efforts such like theming engine, overclocking or other nice features that are really useful but uncommon in stock ROMs. So I recommended anyone who decides to root his phone to flash a custom ROM neither a stock root
A lot of the info is available on XDA forums, tutorials, and on Google so I suggest you start doing some research as it will help you understand wholly much better...
1 - Custom roms are what nico331999 explained. Modified android firmware made for each specific phone model by developers. Its their take on android and most come with many extra features, themes, launchers, based on different android versions, etc. Cyanogenmod is one the popular ones, but there are a lot more. You would have to search the forums for your specific phone. In order to install a custom rom, root is not enough there are other things you would have to do which you will again need to find out for your phone. Generally speaking you have to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, then flash a custom rom along with gapps.
2 - If you develop apps which utilise root access you can allow them sort of 'admin' access to everything on your phone, so you can perform any task with the app which requires such access. One example is replacing system level apps.
3- If you install a custom rom it will have its own version of Android, usually they are updated versions. You can download the FTF file for the most updated firmware version for your phone and then flash it on your phone. You'll be able to search online for instructions and downloads. A new firmware will remove your root and you will need to root it again. You can search for pre rooted firmwares though to avoid that step.
4 - Yes, you have to search for a rooting method for each firmware version of each phone. Developers (great guys) figure out these methods and post them online for the world!
5 - If your device has SD card support you can install many apps on the SD card to save some space using apps such as Apps2SD or Links2SD. You can move all your media to your SD card. If your device doesn't support SD cards I suggest you move as much data as possible to your computer, and maybe use cloud storage at the same time. Also, since you have rooted your phone, you can use an app like Titanium to uninstall bloatware (unused apps which you cannot usually uninstall).
All of this stuff seems like a handful when you first get into it, but you need to get out there and start researching these topics for it to all fall together in place...
I have to add something with apps to SD: some manufacturers (especially Samsung) have a very weird external storage handling (called emulated storage) which doesn't allow you to move your whole apks. It only saves user data.

2 - If you develop apps which utilise root access you can allow them sort of 'admin' access to everything on your phone, so you can perform any task with the app which requires such access. One example is replacing system level apps.
3- If you install a custom rom it will have its own version of Android, usually they are updated versions. You can download the FTF file for the most updated firmware version for your phone and then flash it on your phone. You'll be able to search online for instructions and downloads. A new firmware will remove your root and you will need to root it again. You can search for pre rooted firmwares though to avoid that step.
4 - Yes, you have to search for a rooting method for each firmware version of each phone. Developers (great guys) figure out these methods and post them online for the world!
5 - If your device has SD card support you can install many apps on the SD card to save some space using apps such as Apps2SD or Links2SD. You can move all your media to your SD card. If your device doesn't support SD cards I suggest you move as much data as possible to your computer, and maybe use cloud storage at the same time. Also, since you have rooted your phone, you can use an app like Titanium to uninstall bloatware (unused apps which you cannot usually uninstall).
All of this stuff seems like a handful when you first get into it, but you need to get out there and start researching these topics for it to all fall together in place...

I'm a computer - I.T. guy.. have a history involving Unix and LInux Distro's and have avoided Android until recently.
Currently my devices have been hijacked. Running processes include:

Ive a cheap pre-paid verizon Alcatel 5905s Due to my Premium Devices being hacked

My other devices will run 15 or more services within Googleplayservices.... The Apk versions of these packages like: GoogleplayServices, Android Auto, Facebook Manager (I dont use it btw), etc..all ridiculous permissions include root access and such....
My bluetooth, cameras, wi-fi - are all being turned on by the apps permissions and need help. Again I'm familiar with the Android System a bit - having a I.T. and Unix/Linux background I can come up to speed quickly....
Technology - especially opensource technology should never EVER be used like this. I have encountered a problem which effects a lot of good people. Regardless of their goodness badness or whatever - no one should ever use technology in this way....

Why not simply on hijacked devices re-flash their Stock ROM to get rid off of the installed Custom ROM?
Although Android is based on a modified Linux kernel, it has nothing in common with Linux: the Android Framework, which is based on Java APIs, is the interesting part.
And: Nobody is forced to make use of Google Play Services / Google Services Framework: Custom ROMs like LineageOS don't have them built-in.

Ok. Please let me in on this. It's intriguing. First I know little of Java but have started to begin learning development basics...so my questions are...
So I have an LG322dl....there seems to be no good info on ROMS my way...but then again these "apps' prevent me from looking at things that counter their functions....
I have ADB /Fastboot - and run Ubuntu 20.04. Theres a J7 that I tried to Flash but Heidall didnt work and dont know where else to turn... Theres also the Alcatel 5059s
I have 2 J3's the J7 an LG 322Dl and a Sam A11...i have read what is on here on each of the items. Basically I am told the LG no one can flash...(i dont believe it) the Alcatel is a headcache because I cant get any solid info...the A11 is now Google LOcked , and the Samsungs the original Flahing with Heidall doesnt do squat.....
Now all I understand are probably basics to you... If you got an issue you can flash your phone with the MF's Factory Build...but if your bootloader is locked, say - like on my A11 - I cant bypass for ****. I tried every which way 30 plus hours.... nothing... and it had my original fingerprint!
Also, the methods for each of my devices listed by users here and elsewhere just dont seem to work...
Can you please....explain to me the process to flash and or install a custom rom please?

Can't guide you: never have flashed a Custom ROM, because it never was necessary to do it.
