Backlight to screen stopped working. HALP! - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i am at home playing with my Xoom fine before going to work. I place it in it's padded bag and get in my car to go to work. No bumps, no bangs, no drops. I get into work and pull it out to play with it some more and the screen is dead, or so it seems. Backlight not coming on. So i think it is dead and force a soft reboot, still can see nothing, i try a few more times, finally i notice if i hold it in just the right light i can see the screen fine, it was rebooting, but the backlight wasn't showing.
I let it finish booting and if i hold the screen in just he right light i can see the live wallpaper moving, so i know the screen is on and working, i can click icons and everything, but the backlight still won't light up. Had to stumble my way to brightness in settings, really hard to do when you can barely make out the screen. Set it to auto, nothing, set it to fully bright, stil nothing.
Is this a hardware issue? Or could i have some random software glitch? I rebooted three times now, hoping it would change. Nope. Stock software, no root, nothing. Had it for almost a month now. This sucks.

AT&T Fuze screen issue - bottom menu-area of screen is flickering almost constantly
(Forgive me for the length of this post. I am just trying to provide as much information as possible! If anyone has encountered this same or similar issue, your help is greatly appreciated).
I need help! (professional and otherwise) ...with my AT&T Fuze (rebranded Touch Pro).
I am developing a game for Windows Mobile called Scrobble (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3206316&posted=1), and I left it running overnight.
My screen is set to turn off after 1 minute, and my device set to sleep after 5 minutes when plugged in to external power.
I had the Fuze plugged into wall outlet power to recharge. I left it lying, like I always do, face down on a black soft-leather CD case (so the glowing charging light doesn't bother me).
I left it alone for the 7.5 or so hours I was asleep. When I woke up in the morning and picked it up, the screen was on. It usually is not on, and I don't think I pressed the button to activate the screen.
When I looked at the screen, the Scrobble program was still running, and the bottom menu portion of the screen was flickering. Scrobble has two menu buttons at the bottom -- "Turn" and "Game" -- with a SIP keyboard icon in between them (same as nearly all WM apps).
In any other program, or the Today screen, the menu portion of the screen flickers (the brightness constantly and rapidly fluctuates consistently... like a fluorescent light that is on its last leg).
I did a full power off and power on, and during the "world phone" screen and the the AT&T 3G "power up" animation, the flicker was -not- there. But as soon the Windows Mobile loading/splash screen appeared, the flicker returned, in the exact same spot.
And I can see the ghost "Turn -- [SIP] -- Game" menu in the flicker. But I don't think it's burnt into the display, because it's not there during the first two loading/splash screens.
Currently I have the battery completely removed from the device and will leave it out for a while. If that doesn't work I will do a hard reset.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! (This device is about 2 months old -- does HTC provide any support for it directly?).
Fixed
Phew! My screen flicker issue is no more.
I'm not sure if it's because I took the battery out and let it sit and think about what it had done for ~22 hours, or if it's because it just went away after a while (with the battery out for 22hrs). But either way, my Fuze is back to normal!
So if anyone leaves theirs on overnight and wakes up in the morning to a flickering ghost of a menu at the bottom, my suggestion is to fully reboot it, then take the battery out and leave it out overnight!
(It's kind of nice going a full day without any phone calls!!).
good for you.. you dont need a new phone giving you damage issues already... glad to hear that its gone
Thanks you for this post. I am going through the same thing with my ATT Fuze. This time it is Tomtom that I left running overnight with the screen turning on and off. I can add that the flicker and ghost is there the second the phone powers on. I have already hard reset and took the battery out for a few mins, but the flickering still there. Now I will take the battery out for several hours and hopefully it will be normal again.
I had a similar issue this week. I was using the phone all day, getting emails and phone calls, no problems. I get home and go to charge my phone and it doesn't appear to be charging. I flip on the screen and the whole screen is flickering on and off like it's not getting enough power. I charged the device over night, hard reset, pulled battery for 24 hours and still it won't go away. I just got the device thru amazon so I already reordered a replacement.
I've never left my screen on for hours at a time and I sometimes run into that same issue. The bottom of the screen flickers, and I can see a ghost image of my left and right soft keys when doing things that pull up a dark grey or black screen, like adjusting the volume. I usually try a few soft resets, and if that doesn't work I turn it off and take the battery out for a while. From what I am reading it seems to be correlated with extended periods of screen usage, but my screen has rarely been kept on for more than 30 minutes at a time.
Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but I was just having the same problem with my Fuze: the bottom quarter of the screen was flickering, but without the ghosting you spoke of. Out of curiosity, I went into my "Power Settings" menu, and for some reason the "auto adjust backlight" was unchecked, and the brightness settings were maxed out. I checked "auto adjust backlight" and the flickering stopped. Not sure why, but thought I'd add it to the thread.

Yeah I did notice that it's only really noticeable when the screen is set to max brightness. Setting it on auto adjust cleared it up for me also.

thx guys...helped me out too...
Just sent my unit in for repair (under warrenty) due to the screen flicker issue, lets see what happens when it comes back.
I just started to experience the flicker today. Has be somewhat concerned. The device is only two weeks old.
However, it seems to have stopped by itself while I was searching the forums for an answer. If it returns, I'll try the 'remove battery' method and see if that helps.
Also, I love Scrobble! Shame it doesn't work on QVGA displays. Or, at least, didn't on my Wizard...

Hey guys there's a thread with the same exact issue and a screenshot on the first post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535099
Seems to be something related to the Hardware 3D Acceleration driver for Windows Mobile, I get this problem only once 3d has been activated.
If Sense/TF3D is turned off, I never see this problem. It only comes up once a game or Sense has been launched.
I can also boot into Android without 3D activated and not have this problem, but if I run Sense then go into Android I get the flicker from a Windows Mobile screen while in Android.
protwitness: That doesn't seem to be the case (for me, at least.) I don't run TF3D and it still happens. I can't really discern what the trigger is, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the screen brightness auto adjustment. (Sometimes, I'll turn my phone on when it's dark and it jumps to full day-light brightness for some reason.)
I've adjusted to it and it doesn't really bother me any more.

Screen Problem

This just happened like 45min-1hr ago. I was getting everything cleaned up before i got off of work and i was texting someone and my phone froze, so i soft resetted. it turned back on then it froze again so i once again soft resetted then i put it back in my pocket. i heard the sound the phone plays whenever it turns on and was like okay it's back on everything will be fine. i took it out and the screen is black. i thought it was on sleep mode or w/e but it wasnt. i took out my battery and put it back in and turned it on but the screen is once again black. anyone know how to fix it? i think my screen is broken
i have a touch pro also.
Possibly not the answer you want but have you tried hard-resetting the device? OK it wiped everything but at least you might get a working device from it. Had to do it once on my Trinity, it locked up on receiveing an SMS and a soft reset wouldn't complete, hard reset cured it.
just a regular hard reset? vol down center button. my cousin came over and said it mighta been my backlight? just tried turning it on again and it's real dim but i can barely see the screen.
I was thinking a regular hard reset, but as you have some display, albeit very dull have you checked the backlight hasn't got itself turned all the way down?

how would i check if the backlight is all the way down?
Go into the backlight settings and see where the sliders are.
tricky i know when the screen is very dull, but it might be possible.
that's not probable. minimal backlight doesn't mean black screen.. unless it's a device i'm completely unfamiliar with... tho it is still unprobable.
as deedee suggested, i'd hard-reset
I'm having the same problem, did you find a fix?

[Q]Samsung Galaxy S3 screen problems

TL: DR: Screen sometimes is totally black, but otherwise the screen seems to work fine. Sometimes the phone acts completely normal. Sometimes the phone acts completely normal, but the screen is tinted green, but only after it's booted up. I can access download screen with no issue, most of the time I can get into recovery with out a problem, but not always.
I'm brand new to the GS3, but I purchased it last week on ebay (described as fully functional) since my other phone has been giving me troubles. I received it last Thursday (5/15/14), and it seemed to work fine. I have not been able to activate it yet since I did not have 4G sim card, so I've just been playing with it around the house to make sure it works until I get my 4G card from Verizon in the mail.
So Saturday comes along, and I notice that the screen is all black, but makes the usual sounds when you touch the screen. I pull the battery, and boot it back up. The Samsung logo would come up, but none of the boot animation. Nothing after the Samsung logo. It seems that if I push the power button, the phone seems to be functional, but nothing comes up on the screen. Sometimes if I push the power button a bunch of times, I can get the screen to come on. The screen looked normal, and everything worked fine, until I hit the power button. Back to the black screen. I booted into recovery, cleared the cache and did a factory wipe, and it seemed to be completely normal for a while.
I've noticed that sometimes phone acts completely normal (proper colors, screen turns off and on as it should), sometimes it works normally but the screen is tinted green (power button turns off and on the screen as it should), and sometimes, the screen is totally black, but the touch functions work normally.
Since the screen always works at boot (I can see the Samsung logo clearly and with no color distortion, but sometimes the rest of the boot animation is gone, even though I hear the boot music), and there is also no color distortion in recovery or download mode, am I likely looking at a software issue?
It is not rooted, and completely stock on 4.1.2. EDIT:Baseband is VRBMF1.
I have tried to make my problem as clear as possible, but I will clarify anything if necessary.
Thanks.
I downgraded to VRBMB1 with ODIN, and I still seem to be having the same issue (screen goes black, won't come back on), although the green tint problem hasn't happened yet. As long as I leave the screen on, it works fine. I'm thinking that this might be a problem with the power button, although I don't understand why it would allow me into download mode with no issues, but trouble doing much of anything else. I'm probably going to be sending it back for a refund, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'm more than willing to listen. Thanks.

Screen goes partly black

Hi all, I've got a weird problem. The last 3 days my screen has been acting strange. Phone is working without problems when suddenly the hardware buttons won't respond any more. After a few seconds the screen goes black and stays black. Buttons are still lit, but don't respond. But the strangest part is that the drawer stays visible and can also be used normally. I mean, I can draw the notification area down and let it fill the complete screen. So the screen itself doesn't appear to be broken.
Also, when putting the phone to sleep and awaking it again, I can see the normal screen a brief moment, maybe half a second before it goes black again. Restarting the phone is the only thing that will help...
I've cleared Dalvik/cache hoping it would make a difference, but it did not. Hope someone has got a clue?
I've uploaded 2 screen shots to show what I mean.
I'm rooted on OxygenOs 1.0.3/Android 5.0.2.

Black screen and dead for few minutes

The first day allready 2 times black screen out of no where and afther that no reaction on any buttons.
The first time i waited 10 min or more then the S7 reacted normal again.
The second time i pushed the buttons....
The only reaction is when i press the same time: powerbutton, homebutton & volume button down.
Has anyone the same problem?
I had that issue once with the home button. I had to schedule a reboot through the craptastical built in scheduler that is says it is supposed to optimize the device. Search for restart in the settings.
I have the same sort of problems. All in all the s7e seems very buggy to me. Random crashes (especially in oculus app), sd card is sometimes not recognised and after most reboots I get two error messages (one about touchwiz and one about system proc). I'm not sure what is going on.
My wife's is a black too. I had a similar issues with my s6 last year it was the brightness had been swiped to low in my pocket, I was able to barely see the screen in a dark room and turn it up. No such luck with her s7. Hope someone can offer an idea, I'm headed to Verizon later if I can't fix it myself.
S7 black screen
Verizon did a reset for my wife's S7 to fix it hold down volume down, right side button, and the button on the face of the phone together for 15 seconds. The phone came right back on with all apps and stuff intact. Hope this helps, they said this wasn't the first S7 to come back like this they think it's a software glitch.
Im having the same problem....
any one having dead galaxy s7 edge not broken

Try turning off the App Power saving mode!! This fixed the black screen problem on my phone.
I've got the same issue (sometimes 4 times in an hour, sometimes it doesn't happen for 2 days..!!).
I've tried fixing by doing a factory reset and turning app power saving mode off.
Unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Yesterday I got an unresponsive blackscreen again :crying:
Any ideas how to fix this problem?
This happened two days ago with my wife's S7 Edge. She was using it to text me about dinner plans after work, her screen shut off, and it wouldn't work for several hours. The thing was getting very hot. When she was home and charging the phone the screen started working again for a little while, but with several green stripes down the right edge snd aa flashing horizontal band of grey near the top overlaying the screen image. Then when I tried plugging it into my computer to use Samsung's Smart Switch to roll back from the update she had accepted while at work the screen died again. It has not come on since, not even the stripes, and blue or red LED lights once in a wwhile at random. I managed to use Smart Switch to wipe the phone's memory. Then the program took several hours to download something very slowly and install that - a whole new OS update? That completed, and now the charging LED works correctly and the green stripes and grey band are back, flashing rapidly when powering on. Otherwise no screen function. She is shopping for a new non-Samsung phone now. Ridiculous.
