[Q] Video Recording Failure - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

So the only thing that I have noticed that is fairly annoying is this:
You open up the video camera and you start to record (mind you it's set for 720p recording 1280x720). After 8 seconds (or 10 sometimes) it stops working. Menu, Back etc. nothing works except hitting home button.
Going back into the app its still stuck. Eventually it moves to the view the video screen, and when you go back it says "Video Recording Failed".
You do this maybe once or twice, and then you're good, no more problems for that moment when you want to record.
Anyone else?

Yeah I am also experiencing that problem but there is another issue I am having with the gallery and video player. For example If i watch one video, exit the video and choose another, the phone starts to FC and goes crazy and the only fix is to reboot because it does the same thing over and over again. Its is really irritating especially since I record a lot of videos on this phone and i want to watch the video before i upload it.

I'm on stock KD1, but it was happening on stock KB5 as well.
It's not like I can't work around it, and it only happens for recording 1280x720 resolution videos. Might even be SD related who knows.

I used to have the same problen when recording on the camera's highest resolution. Once I switched the sd card to a 16gb class 6, never had that problem again.

I'm on KD1 with Stock memory card and I'm not experiencing this issue.
Possible phone defect, maybe?

yeah i made sure to go into the settings and check the 1280x720. recorded fine. Maybe a clean start and flash may do the trick?
I completely started all over again. backed up stock memory card to computer. formatted it, then flashed phone to Kxx rom then downloaded all apps and rebuilt my launcher and home screens. I now have no issues what so ever. I think it was due to all the crap that i was dl'ing and uninstalling along with flashing. One more thing, fixed all of my permissions after doing the whitehawkz mods and CWM beta. phone is snappy and happy, no FC's and all seems to be working fine.
or like smokey said, change out sd card and see what happens...

I'm using KD1 but I have an 8gb class 10 card and I'm not experiencing this problem.

Yeah I think that if I did that chadster and got a higher class SD it would probably resolve it.
Also probably not a bad idea to do what fknfocused suggested either. I've stayed pretty stock but getting that itching to mod the phone up. UOT Kitchen does have support for Edify scripting but probably has a few things that may or may not work well with TW.
Anyhow, I'm getting the urge to mod.

Is your camera locking up (No pre-view picture)?
When I select the camera icon, I see the camera menu in the lower part of the screen and I can even take pictures, however I see a black image instead of the pre-view photo on the screen. This issue goes away by soft resetting the phone; however it usually comes back after few days and the only way to see the pre-view image is by resetting the phone. The strange part is that the camera can actually take pictures but I cannot see the photo before taking it. Have you heard of this issue? The phone works just fine otherwise and I like it a lot.
Thanks,

Are you running stock?
I can't speak for whatever potential issues might be caused by any of the custom roms in circulation, but on a stock phone, obviously it shouldn't be doing that.
I can't imagine what hardware issue would produce intermittent preview-ability that's temporarily remedied by a soft reset, yet still manages to capture the photo itself, but there's a first time for everything.
Sent from my Inspire using XDA Premium
My stock camera application (and Camera360) and camcorder applications both exhibit this behavior. A soft-reset of the device usually temporarily resolves the issue (i.e. allows me to use the camera for a short period of time). However, after my phone has been on for a while any app that uses the camera just locks up (eventually have to force close or soft-reset).
It is rather annoying. The only information I found seems to indicate that there may be an issue with the API within FroYo itself. Hopefully when we get the update to GingerBread the problem will resolve itself.
I also read something else about something to do with an LED widget that caused someone problems but I'm not using any LED widgets, so I'm not sure what that's referring to.
Hopefully there's a fix out there somewhere or we get the 2.3 update soonish.

Hmmm...
This is the first thread I've come across that brings up this problem.
My stock (rooted) phone, my mom's stock phone, and my dad's stock phone have never encountered an issue like this, but then again, maybe we were the three lucky ones...
EDIT:
That's not to say you guys are crazy... maybe we just haven't had the right combo of circumstances to expose the problem/bug on our phones.
Now that I think more about it, I did have an issue when I ran barcode scanner once, about a month ago. That of course uses the camera. As soon as it identified the barcode, and I pressed the 'search web' button, it just froze (image still visible), but the back key/screen input was unresponsive. The only thing that worked was the home button, which, instead of going to the home screen, displayed the screen you see when you are about to end a call with someone on your phone. Thing is, I hadn't made a single call that day. That screen was also unresponsive, but when I pushed the home button again, it finally got to the home screen.
I then went into manage apps in settings and FC'd barcode scanner and the dialer/phone, just in case. I even uninstalled barcode scanner because I thought it might have a phone-specific bug that I didn't want to deal with.
I don't know if there's any correlation between the yours/OP's issue, but it sounds like it's ****ed up in a similar way. FWIW.

I think I managed to fix mine by wiping my dalvik cache. On the downside, my current drain used to be around 5 when my phone was in standby and now it is around 45. On the upside, I haven't had a problem with the camera or camcorder since then.

Mine ended up being a hardware issue. Phone was exchanged with at&t. Haven't had an issue with the camera since.
Just wanted to update for the OP.

Sorry bro no.
The best thing about this phone is the camera and It's flawless on my end.

Happened to me the other day, it crashed out 3 times, restarted phone, it crashed again then HTC error report came up, sent in and the camera worked.. That was last saturday, hasn't happened again.
why is that so !?
in my view its definitely a software issue, some difficulty between the camera hardware and the software, cuz i tried the restoring to default factory settings and it did work out well, camera started workin but after some time like 4 days same issues again !!!!!!! ??????? plss
have you tried clearing the cache of the camera app?
mine working flawlessly. have no such issue yet.
I had the same problem, first i heard strange sounds from the focus, a mechanic like.
After few reboots and testing suddenly the camera doesn't start.
A lot of reboots later i finished doing a factory reset.
It worked for a day, then again the same problem.
But i find the problem, my camera doesn't work with 8mp settings it auto close, btw with 1920x1080 in camcorder works but doesn't record the video.
I've just remember that problems start after installing lgcamera i think.
EDIT: after trying root without unlocking bootloader (i read it works) following this tuto ww.briefmobile.com/how-to-root-htc-one-x-att now i can use 8mp and full hd video recording. it's annoying
EDIT 2: now it isn't working anymore
the same thing exactly happens to me every time i restart the phone, the cam app opens
makes some strange noise like trying to fucos or something, then the app closes with no error. and when u try that again, after 4-5 times the app doesnt open at all
!!! contacted with htc they said reset the phone, i did but same things again, contacted again and they said go to our store , but my phone is guarantyless cuz i rooted it

Just lock your boot loader and restore stock Rom and you'll be good. A lot of people have traded their phones in this way.

in other forum i read that corrupt video or image can cause the close-app i remove them and also a high bitrate fullhd video and then the cam is working, often the focus noise still
My HTC one S camera crash. Every time I touch the camera icon to open it, the phone reboot itself. I sent several report to HTC, didnt help. And my phone reboot itself several times a day. I did use HTC all in one package to root my phone. Can anyone help me ?

[Q] Camera / Video playback

So back when I was on Froyo and GB + root the camera and video playback worked flawlessly.
Since then, I've updated/flashed over to Slim_ICS + Lightning Launcher. I can record video just fine. But when I go to playback any sort of media, whether it be from youtube or facebook or something I've had on my SD card already, or something I record with the camera; the screen with flicker constantly and the frames will freeze (sound will continue to play). If it tap the video it'll pause play back and then catch up and resume. Sometimes it will work after the tap, sometimes it won't. I'm led to believe it has something to do with the latest flash over, since on the two previous builds it never gave any issues...
I also downloaded a aftermarket app ( MX player ) and still the same issue. Any ideas?

Does this only happen on SlimICS + Lightning Launcher?
Tried just SlimICS?
Try any other rom?
Does this happen on CM9 r8? (without lightning launcher.)

It seems to be on the SlimICS + Lightning Launcher.
Previously I was running GB + root + CWM + basic with a twist KJ6 and ADW.Launcher, and everything was good. I have not tried any other roms yet. I'm looking into the next one to try actually. Been thinking about going back down to GB or at least changing to a new launcher.
If it makes a difference, I did jump from GB + KJ6 over to SlimICS without previously having CM7 or CM9 installed. (I did this for two reasons, 1.) as I was doing my research on CM9 I noticed a lot of issues that I wanted to stay away from, 2.) erikmm himself said it wasn't necessary to have either version previously installed.) Now could this be the red-flag issue? I did a complete wipe/factory reset before the flash over. Though I did not flash over the zip twice as one user said to do in order to do the jump smoothly.
Just thought I'd post an update.
Went ahead and switched to GO Launcher. Cleared cache and rebooted phone. Video playback works fine now!
Though I think I'll go back to ADW.launcher. I like it more than GO so far.

[Q] trying to use camera from lock screen results in crashreboot

I flashed 5.0 onto my Nexus 5 a while back and have been loving it. But there is a MAJOR issue I have encountered.
If, from the lock screen, i swipe to open the camera (I use Google's camera app) then swipe on the charms and select video and press record... i can almost always reproduce an immediate forced reboot it makes me very sad.
I have tried wiping the system cache... i'm not sure what else to do...
any advice?
bumping... been playing around with my N5 more and more and still getting the issue.
I notice that it happens in other camera apps that can take videos as well. Not just google's official camera app.
Also, it does not have to be launched from the lock screen for it to occur. sigh.
there have been a few times where i can get it to successfully record a video... but i can't reproduce it all the time. MOST of the time it crashes my entire phone
Same here. Noticed they pushing 5.01 out... Maybe a fix. I've had every Nexus and early software is allways buggy, IMO
thanks so much for replying. just glad it's not only my phone, you know?
I think I found a workaround until google fixes it. and they better.
if you open the camera and switch it to video mode but BEFORE pressing record, if you toggle the thunderbolt (light) on and off at least once (doesn't matter if you leave it on or on afterwards), then start recording it SHOULD work without rebooting... at least it has so far.
Dont have the issue on mine, i have the ElemantalX kernel though but i dont think that makes a difference

I'm certainly not suggesting the issue doesn't exist, but I cannot reproduce this on my stock 5.0 installation.
That being said, there are seemingly lots of Lollipop bugs that some people get and others simply do not... in my experience that'll probably make them a little more time-consuming to fix.
Well, a little good news... I hope?
I did a flash to 5.0.1 stock and i can't reproduce it anymore. videos record perfectly fine.
now let's give it a week or so of me dicking around with various apps and settings and see how that goes

slow camera opening

Hey, does anyone else find that the camera on the P9 takes a good 5 or so seconds from clicking the app to it actually displaying the image(this happens randomly but not always)? I find it stays black for a few seconds before it finally displays what the camera sees. Every other app is quick to open though ?

But, as you say, sometimes it is very quick.

Don't use Snapchat I'm afraid.
I have tested swapping the "priority to SD" flag but it is still inconsistent.
it seems that the problem fixed after disabled (priority to SD) and then take any picture. (so when open camera will load latest photo from internal storage not SD) .
I have this issue too. If the camera is still in the recent app cache it will open instantly. If I close it out and leave it about 5 minutes it can take at least 5 seconds before I can see the on screen image and take a photo...
I don't have the priority SD card switched on. I'm on the UK Vodafone SKU
Any ideas?
the problem is still exist after disabled the priority to sd . (it was ok for one day after disabled priority to sd but the problem back again yesterday) so it's not related to sd card . and it's really annoying when you want to take a picture you will miss it because of slow opening that happens randomly .
I tried the camera in safe mode and it seemed to work fine. Could be a third party app that is trying to launch at the same time.
I'll try investigate further.

ok . please keep us updated
So. Definitely looks to be a software issue. Either at the system level or third party apps. Most likely the latter.
I downloaded Open Camera and had the same inconsistent opening times. After I removed it from recents and opened a few other apps, Open Camera took around 3-5 seconds to be ready to take a shot.
Not sure which app is influencing it so much. So time to start disabling things and testing further. Joy.....

it seems that not everyone has this problem ? what do you think?
How fast does camera open from locked phone if you use the power button and volume down button with to take a photo as soon as it opens?
It tells you speed on screen, maybe we can compare this too? I am getting 1.1 to 1.5 seconds.

you mean double tap the volume down while phone is locked ?
Sorry yes double tap, I always forget how to it and takes me longer than the actual camera to open and shoot.
I just came from Windows phones and am used to having dedicated camera button so am still adjusting.
The ultra snapshot took 1.7 seconds. But immediately after that the camera app was frozen for about 5 seconds before the screen showed live what the lens was seeing and let me take another shot. Really frustrating.
for me it took 1.0 , 1.7 and 2.4. I think the problem with huawei firmware. can you share your software version ?

I tired removing well known resource heavy apps. Facebook, Twitter etc but no change. I removed AL3 as my launcher and went back to stock. Seemed to improve slightly but still get the 5-7 second freeze every now and again.
so it's not related to my model eval19 . so Huawei must know about this problem to solve it in new update . but I don't know how ?
