Hardware Upgrade - T-Mobile LG G2x

In 1982 you could buy a Sharp PC-1500 (aka TRS-80 PC-2) for what amounts to about $400 (inflation adjusted). It was 7cm longer than your G2x, 2cm wider and almost three times as thick. The magazine ad featured Isaac Asimov (and also his sideburns).
The PC-1500 featured a 156×7 pixel LCD screen, an 8-bit CPU, an integrated speaker and an expansion port for printer and tape drives. It allowed you to program in BASIC (one program at a time, please), but some German devs later cracked the device and released an assembler. It had 6 KB of internal RAM, but you could more than double that by buying an 8 KB expansion module. My research on this is ongoing, but I do not think you could use the PC-1500 to add/stop/start torrents remotely or to control XBMC.
I have been thinking about the PC-1500 all day, patting the G2x-sized lump in my pocket and smiling. (But not in a pervy way.)

I saw this morniung they're releasing an updated version of the Commodore 64. Now that was a cool computer. I loved my Commodore 64.
And I sure agree. It's truly amazing if you consider it, the power in this little phone.

NEW!!! Pocket PC's Of the future coming soon. . . . .

Hi there everyone!
I went to TOKYO not so long ago (end of July). And GUESS what I saw???
These marketers introduced me to a new Pocket PC.
They call it the FUTARON V27
It's basicly a 812MHz Pocket PC, with a 3 Megapixel CCD video/photo cam. Its got a powerful graphics controller, similar to the one's in the PSP (Playstation Portable) and a strong 3G+GPRS built-in antenna. When they demonstated it to me, they wouldn't let me touch it
They put WM5 on one, and on another they put their own program which lacks similarities to the MW5 but it is, how do you say, more simplied and windows xp looking.
They run, the liberty city stories using a PSP emulator, which also runs other games like Mario and Pokemon. When I asked them about JAVA, they laughed , but yeah it does have it's own JAVA system.
He loaded the game from the pocket pc, itself so it was large file size. He told me it had a total of 5 Gb storage!!!
It's even got its own TV out, like the samsung d600 phone. They plugged it on a projector and showed me Pocket Powerpoint and also played the game via the projection. 8)
I should mention, though it was a bit bigger than my XDAII, the size was basicly the result of the fingerprint reader and all the other commercially available space consuming specialties. Basicly had more specifics than you can point with sticks!! But it was without a doubt, thinner, less rigid and smaller than the PSP.
There was special accessories made for it, like 3 different types of car holders for different holding ways. Optional: loudspeaker, charger, GPS holders. A weird case, but it is very protective, which you can tell by teh fact how the guy dropped and slammed it unto the ground a couple times which nothing happend. An expensive looking stylish cover. A durable plastic cover which you can go diving (i think) since its waterproof and you can press the buttons from the cover's buttons (what about taping the screen??) I guess that was designed for diving photography. A mini device wich you plug into the serial and the tv out and it shows a small (about 20" inch) projective for portable in-class presentations.A work station where its hooked up to speakers, where it can be charged and charge a battery, otherwise the spare battery (u connect) to the station is used, also has the projector, a note holder and couple of buttons which u can configure, i saw him use it like an office telephone with the hold button and all. And many other things which u connect like a powerful LED torch, forgot to mention the camera has it own LED torch and ca be used separately.
The whole pocket poket pc was very artistically designed, very comfortable, light and stylish. You could hold it in a digital camera type way, the PSP game kind of way, the stylus tapping sort of way and ofcourse the mobile type where you hold it on your ear.
When I asked them for a trade for my XDA II, the man nearly died of laughter. No racial offence, but I think these Japanese cannot hold their laughter. I asked for the price, he said it wasn't for sale. That they were merely introducing their devices to the tourists and hoping to get feedback and possibly order. Since I dont trust anyone with my money  I didnt order anything, they basicly get your ID and credit card and contact you when they will release it.
This phone was not a phone, a pocket pc, a digital camera, a gameboy but it was something else. These nerds gathered their brains :?: and the wanted things/ideas  from the public and made it real.
He said there is a slim chance these devices may come out until the end of 2007-mid 2008. I guess their holding off their stuff to profit more from previous products.?..
I've not pictures of this, it was a, as the sign read, "NO CAM TAKING" with guards about. :x
Anyways, I guess these people just rolled our dreams into one good fantasy which we can't have or touch and probably photograph until 3 or so more years.
I am thinking about buying a machine that packages (with an opening mini-parachute) a stored content when it fires. And it does fire, yes it does, so i can be like to the guy:
Why dont you try my SD card? Yoink grab the device
chuck it in the launcher. shoot the device into the air.
The parachute opens, it lands safely out of the secure zone.
My friend grabs it and disappears from TOKYO. And while the guards watch the device open its parachute, I run another direction and also escape. Next week, I'm home using my new whatever device. Lets face the facts, the name of the device is very bad. :?
That's it for my explaining.
812 MHz? How much battery life would that device have?
plenty of battery life, it has a nuclear reactor in the back instead of those outdated Lithion Ion batteries were stuck with....
Thats quite impressive but not surprising for Japan the micro technology capital of the world, I think theres some big innovations in pocket technology on the way from pocket pc phones to UMPCs.
By 2007-2008 only imagination knows what could be coming out by then.
No its not a PPC. Its is a UMPC And they have already been release in America.
I've sold one at my warehouse for $880.
The other system running is Windows XP Media Center Portable Edition.
Samsung and Asus have released them in America
Are you sure you didnt see this thing?
30gig, 1.2gig intel,4.5inch screen, XP, wifi, Plus many more. There are some models that come EDGE/GPRS.
Its only a little bigger then the XDA Exec.
and Im loving it!
Uh, "a little bigger" is the whole issue. Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets but lets face it: a device this size really takes the "pocket" out of "Pocket PC".
Sure, it's a great replacement for a laptop, but not for PPC (specially phone edition devices).

looking for tiny cheap easy to mod android devices

I need quite a few of them for a robotics project.
They need to be small.. don't need to be high powered.
?
Im kinda confused on what your looking for?
"looking for tiny cheap easy(wut?) to mod android devices"
If you mean cheap androids, you would be surprised how cheap they go on craigslist.

I'm looking for a few cheap phones "devices".
As small as possible.
That have:
touch input
small screen
blue tooth
Magnometer &/ accelerometer.
camera
usb
mSD slot
wi-fi.. gsm and gps not required.
For use for a swarm robotics project.
About 300 to 600MHz cpu's with 64 to 512 mb ram?
Guys i really need help finding some.. every year the most advanced project wins the prize.
My lecturer looked over my plans for 12 flying combat simulation drones.
The idea is to show some intelligence. so i need to keep the brains for these drones light and fast.
They will combat to death in a simulated Arena.. targets are marked with lasers and drones need to work together in teams of 6.
My Field of battle the school is going to kindly provide me is the foot ball field.
My plan is to setup blocks and walls and markers in the fashion of "Dota , LoL 5v5, Hon" maps.
And have 2 teams rip each other apart. till primary base tower is gone.
This i a huge project.. and i'm getting allot of support. but i have till the end of the year.
I already built 8 drones.. all identical.
But now i need the brains.
My first prototype i used a "x10 mini" but i'm hoping to find something cheaper and perhaps lighter..
This is a big chance to stop working crappy jobs and actually get my life into order.
help
Htc hero meets all of those. (screen cant really get smaller if you want cheap)
the usb on the phone might be proprietary but the other end should be fine.
I saw them start of in the teens on ebay.
hope i help. plz thank if i did.
HTC Wildfire.
Very inspiring thread. Sound like a really cool project and I would love to see the result
I can recommend phonearena (website) which has a comparison tool. You should be able to find the best device for your project.
Good luck.
Looks like you wont get any smaller than the x10 mini. the wildfire S is a good option too(little lighter than hero) but not as many and not as cheap.

I managed to track down a few X10 mini's for quite dirt cheap.
I looked at the other devices but the mini makes the most sense for the project.

How is the Microsoft Surface?

Hello all
I am the owner of the Nexus 7 and i'm thinking to get the Microsoft Surface RT. I heard it was a lot laggy but these sources last from November 2012 and I guess Microsoft had the time to update and fix a lot of bugs.
So, how is as today the Microsoft Surface RT? Still laggy? Are there case where it always lags? Are games running smooth? Is Microsoft Office running smooth by now? Is the slow typing issue fixed? I want to know everything
Comparing to a Nexus 7, which will I find smoother? Which will I find best for games?
PS: I don't really play games but it tells more about specs
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
For the most part it is fixed. You may get lag in PowerPoint and ink in word. Other than that... Smooth.
Sent from my Evo V 4G using XDA Premium HD app
mines fine, but I am having a replacement.... (all cosmetic damage)
Performance; fast, no lag, smooth gaming(what ever games you can find)
Design; the magnesium case makes the surface amazing to the touch, it feels solid yet light.
it gives you confidence for when you drop it. Kickstand is brilliant (mine is still attached)
All The Good Stuff;
the surface has expandable memory(supports up to 64GB Class 10 SD)
battery life is acceptable(about 8 hours give or take - depending on what your doing)
kickstand (not adjustable)
type cover (I've had a few problems with this, but all have been replaced for free)
Not All Good;
speakers (but they can be made louder in settings)
crappy app selection (a few xbox games)
standard screen
heavy ( a little heavier than ipad)
glitches in the OS
type cover is hard to use
Hope I helped a little, things maybe added to the list!
I haven't found lag to be a problem in general when running native apps (emulated x86 is a different story, although even there most apps that work at all work pretty well). Both tablets use the same CPU/GPU and have the same RAM, so performance of the hardware is nearly a wash (the Surface RT has marginally higher resolution than the Nexus 7, which will probably have a trivial impact). Games that I've played on it run smoothly, if not necessarily at *very* high framerates. I can't compare it to the Nexus 7 as I haven't spent enough time using one, but performance is not a problem for me either gaming or browsing the web. The email client used to be laggy as hell; that's now much better. I've actually done a non-trivial Powerpoint deck on the Surface RT, and had no noteworthy problems with lag there either (scrolling was just a little stutter if I went fast, but that happens even on my work PC) although my slides weren't terribly complex.
The biggest differences, specs-wise, between the two tablets are that the N7 has GPS, NFC, and optional cellular data, but comes at 16 or 32 GB of non-expandable storage, while the Surface RT has a rear-facing camera as well as the front-facing one, 32 or 64GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot. The Surface RT also has a standard USB host port, which makes it easy to add additional storage or connect other types of devices like gamepads, cellular dongles, and even phones or other tablets (although no, it cannot run ADB).
EDIT: I'm wrong, the Nexus 7 has only 1GB of RAM, which is half as much as the Surface RT. Surface should support heavy apps and multitasking far better than N7.
Thanks for all those comments if other people have some stuffs to add I'm willing to hear them
What do you guys mean by OS Glitch?
Also, is the tablet scratch proof? (screen and back)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
The Surface line is *extremely* durable. The chassis has been shown to survive everything from being used as a skateboard (at one of the announcement presentations) to flying off a car roof on the freeway (albeit with some denting); search and you'll find these incidents. It's intended to withstand multiple drops onto concrete from "person height" of like 3.5' or so (mid-torso-ish; I should ask my friend who works in that department again). I've personally stepped on mine by accident (lying on carpet, though) with no damage at all. The screen is Corning Gorilla Glass 2, which is extremely scratch resistant, and with the metal chassis protecting the edges, it's also very shatter-resistant. In other words, it's as close to "scratch proof" as any real-world consumer object is going to be. It is technically possible to break the kickstand, but the demo video I saw required putting a large part of a grown man's weight on the top edge of the tablet (with kickstand open) before the hinges gave.
Also, in case you didn't see above, I screwed up on the spec comparison in my previous post. The Surface RT has 2GB of RAM, twice as much as the N7. Windows RT will probably have a larger base memory footprint than Android, but the difference should still allow for a lot more multitasking and also for larger programs or data sets (I've loaded really huge Excel spreadsheets with no problem, and regularly have dozens of browser tabs open, for example).
Thanks you Just watched a lot of videos on destructions test and performance So far so great
Now isn't a great time to buy hardware, since this is the tail end for last year's hardware cycle. Models, especially RT ones, are hitting clearance. There's the Dell XPS 10 RT (posted in Windows RT forum) for $250 if you want to jump. No firsthand knowledge, but the XPS 10's Snapdragon S4 is faster than the Surface's Tegra 3.
Edit: Looks like the Dell XPS 10 deal is dead. Please ignore.

My Screen has had no scratches so far.... And for the back of the device, well that has had a few scratches, I think they are from my keys and loose change.

Gorilla glass has a very high hardness rating, in general in order for an object to get a scratch the object scratching it has to have a higher hardness rating (no innuendo intended).
There are few common items with a higher hardness than gorilla glass. Some precious gems like diamond and sapphire (by extension ruby) will easily do it, so basically don't try scratching a wedding ring (if you happen to be married and using a diamond ring if course) against your screen. A few rare alloys can do it. Gorilla glass shards are of course the same hardness as gorilla glass so can also damage the screen. Sand (both builders and beach) is also capable of scratching the screen. That's about it. If you really tried you could do it with a material softer than gorilla glass but chances are by that point your not scratching the screen but plain shattering it (which is one thing, gorilla glass is damned scratch resistant and pretty tough but still possible to shatter)

My dad did fortune-telling as a hobby, mostly for friends and acquaintances. He did palm-reading, and had all these complicated astrological charts. One thing I've learned from him is that people don't want to hear the truth (inasmuch as "truth" can be divined) if it's bad news; they only want good news. Fortune telling isn't about reading people's fate as much as reading people.
Likewise, people asking for opinions from existing owners aren't looking for advice as much as affirmation, because the natural tendency for owners is bias toward their already-made choice. It's called the confirmation bias.
>I want to know everything.
You won't know much by asking questions with only one answer. Do the work and start reading. Windows RT and Surface RT have been covered ad nauseam on tech sites, including this forum.
But that's not what you want to hear, so I'll oblige: I think the Surface RT is perfect for you. Buy now. Don't wait. There's always something better down the line, and you can keep waiting forever.

By the way, I forgot to give some news here!
Ar first I bought the Microsoft Surface RT. I really realky enjoyed it! The only thing I didn't like from it was a few missing apps (such as Facebook) and maybe a missing Microsoft Visual Studio. I really wished I could do some programming on it So yeah after a week I returned it.
I then bought the Surface Pro wich I liked way more. Faster and I could use my Windows Programs I didn't like the fact the Pro version couldn't receive notifications in sleep mode, that really disapointed me. Also, it was impossible to set alarm since in sleep mode it wouldn't ring.
I had to sell it about 3 months later because I needed money to afford my school books and stuff but really, I really liked that tablet.

4 GBs of RAM and 128 storage?! That's sick! I am incredible interested if only for native dual boot loader. The renders look sleek and sick. I've no experience with indiegogo though, but I am guessing it's similar to Kickstarter? Either way. Count me in!
I already backed it. Unbelievably excited.
Back it for 1 unit. One thing now that worries me. Silicon Anode battery. Didn't know what is it and did a quick search and found that it's not a mature tech yet. Hope the battery can hold it's recycle charges. If not hopefully the battery can be changes easily.

I say this should become the official Ubuntu Edge discussion thread
I bet a lot of people would like to have the phone once it is out, if that happens, and then pay thousands of dollars to get one on ebay, instead of supporting the fund now and make it actually happen.
Because technology wise, this phone is really nice. All components state of the art or even better. For example the sapphire crystal glass screen. Should be much better than gorilla glass. Seiko watches use it for instance.
Hope this will work out with the crowd funding.

Well, if each person, who wants to have Edge, donates 600$ (which seems to be the price of the final product), then Canonical needs only 53400 people to collect 32.000.000$ and start the production. I say this is pretty much real, Ubuntu fans alone cpuld fund the whole sum, let alone Android users who are interested in both Ubuntu Touch and the Ubuntu Edge, which would make about double the number.
So my bet is that Canonical will get the needed money before Christmas
Will they bring out the phone if the crowd funding fails? There is only 29 days left now on the clock.
Wow, they already got almost 3.600.000$ =-O
I would hope that some companies donate towards it. Considering how many are using their software, it only seems fair...
I wish I had some spare change to back one, as this is seriously the kind of smartphone I'd be interested in. Running a normal desktop Linux OS with both a mobile gui for the phone screen and a desktop gui for docking it. That would be an awesome device.
At the rate things are going now, they're not going to get the funds they need. The rate of funding slowed down a lot once time ran out on the $600 option. It would be a shame too.

New perks available with lower prices.
If Edge becomes reality, then Ubuntu will beat Microsoft at unifying mobile & desktop experience, but on the more productive side. Microsoft offers the same experience only for those people who don't use Desktop anymore on PC and don't mind losing the real multitasking environment as well as give up desktop programs.
Edge will have the best advantage possible, as according to Canonical it will run everything that Ubuntu runs. The specs are top notch.
My only regret is that I'll have the cash to back it only around mid-August so I would lose the $600 mark
But Microsoft will still rule the enterprise sector, as all the business programs are made for Windows only

Ziber Xra - Android Multi-Touch Coffee Table

Hello,
Over the last couple months I have been designing and building an android powered Coffee Table. I named it the Ziber Xra. Below are the pics.
I want feedback from you guys and constructive criticism for the next one. Your ideas are welcome.
Specs:
Multi-Touch Screen Size 22"
AnTuTu Score: fresh android install, 35663 after loaded with tons of apps, 24380 (not sure why there's such a big difference. Anyone?)
OS Android KitKat 4.4.2 64-bit, Supports Windows 8
1.8 Ghz Dual Core Intel Celeron
4Gb DDR3 RAM
WiFi 802.11b/g/n 150Mbps 64/128-bit WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption and WPS-compatible
Bluetooth(needs driver fix, only works part of the time)
USB Ports 2
Headphone Jack
6 speakers (3 on each side)
400 Watt Audio Amp
USB Webcam Support
USB Mic Support
Here is a short video of the table: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a3wTI5j0Gk
I'm starting work on the next one. I have learned a lot and this time I want to focus more on a nice design. I will also be working a lot more on the software side so thats where you guys could help a lot!
I would love ideas and opinions.
So far I'm thinking:
TV cable input with digital TV app
Wireless charging on table surface
40" led screen
IP66 water resistant
Bose sound system(more compact for less clunky legs)
Whoa that android table is awesome! It would be cool of the entire top was the screen with a bit more contemporary metallic grey metal legs, although it would make for a pretty bad sounding speaker box being all metal.
Thanks for the feedback! I agree with the screen idea and contemporary look. I had a guy over here last night and he got all excited about it and thinks theres a market for touch coffee tables if I could make quality at a cheap price. This guy has done very well in the business world. He thinks it would be good to eventually make different lines of tables.
One like this out of solid walnut to fit in a living room nicely with the rest of the furniture. And then one with the entire surface as one big screen out of brushed aluminum and stuff like that with a different physical design.
Its just a dream, but im working hard towards the next one to really make it well with tons of features and high build quality. If anyone is interested I can post pictures along the whole process. Providing no one steals my ideas!
This looks GREAT!! I Would love to have one.
Love to see...
MAME Controls boards (usb or wireless so you can put them away) for some Awesome Old Skool Gaming!!
Maybe a wireless hard drive to share media.
If you make the screen the full size of the table then where can you put your drink?

Is that a preorder? haha...
As for the MAME and old school gaming, couldn't I just get the MAME4droid app? or would it take special hardware controls too?
Wireless Hardrive: I could probably inegrate SAMBA into a system build somehow.
I never thought of that about the screen being too big. Since it uses infrared, setting a drink on the surface could really make it go weird. Haha even Einstein probably lost his glasses on his head!
I didnt put together a build log but I could probably do that from memory.
I have a friend whos an engineer and i think he may help me figure out how to make the screen so it can tilt up for whatching movies. Thats one feature that would really set it apart from all the other tables out there.(which arent many)

Beer Battle!!!
LOL, Are you going to add Beer Battle!!! that looks neat!!!
Well for MAME you dont need hardware controls but.. it makes it more fun!
Beer battle is great right!! I don't know how possible it is with IR touch technology but its worth research!
OK, I really have never played the old games (I'm only 16) so I don't really no what hardware controls would be used. Is there USB ones already made somewhere? My table supports USB game controllers.
