Hello,
Over the last couple months I have been designing and building an android powered Coffee Table. I named it the Ziber Xra. Below are the pics.
I want feedback from you guys and constructive criticism for the next one. Your ideas are welcome.
Specs:
Multi-Touch Screen Size 22"
AnTuTu Score: fresh android install, 35663 after loaded with tons of apps, 24380 (not sure why there's such a big difference. Anyone?)
OS Android KitKat 4.4.2 64-bit, Supports Windows 8
1.8 Ghz Dual Core Intel Celeron
4Gb DDR3 RAM
WiFi 802.11b/g/n 150Mbps 64/128-bit WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption and WPS-compatible
Bluetooth(needs driver fix, only works part of the time)
USB Ports 2
Headphone Jack
6 speakers (3 on each side)
400 Watt Audio Amp
USB Webcam Support
USB Mic Support
Here is a short video of the table: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a3wTI5j0Gk
I'm starting work on the next one. I have learned a lot and this time I want to focus more on a nice design. I will also be working a lot more on the software side so thats where you guys could help a lot!
I would love ideas and opinions.
So far I'm thinking:
TV cable input with digital TV app
Wireless charging on table surface
40" led screen
IP66 water resistant
Bose sound system(more compact for less clunky legs)
Whoa that android table is awesome! It would be cool of the entire top was the screen with a bit more contemporary metallic grey metal legs, although it would make for a pretty bad sounding speaker box being all metal.
Thanks for the feedback! I agree with the screen idea and contemporary look. I had a guy over here last night and he got all excited about it and thinks theres a market for touch coffee tables if I could make quality at a cheap price. This guy has done very well in the business world. He thinks it would be good to eventually make different lines of tables.
One like this out of solid walnut to fit in a living room nicely with the rest of the furniture. And then one with the entire surface as one big screen out of brushed aluminum and stuff like that with a different physical design.
Its just a dream, but im working hard towards the next one to really make it well with tons of features and high build quality. If anyone is interested I can post pictures along the whole process. Providing no one steals my ideas!
This looks GREAT!! I Would love to have one.
Love to see...
MAME Controls boards (usb or wireless so you can put them away) for some Awesome Old Skool Gaming!!
Maybe a wireless hard drive to share media.
If you make the screen the full size of the table then where can you put your drink?
---------- Post added at 05:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:44 PM ----------
Do you have a build log? Would love to see that as well..

Is that a preorder? haha...
As for the MAME and old school gaming, couldn't I just get the MAME4droid app? or would it take special hardware controls too?
Wireless Hardrive: I could probably inegrate SAMBA into a system build somehow.
I never thought of that about the screen being too big. Since it uses infrared, setting a drink on the surface could really make it go weird. Haha even Einstein probably lost his glasses on his head!
I didnt put together a build log but I could probably do that from memory.
I have a friend whos an engineer and i think he may help me figure out how to make the screen so it can tilt up for whatching movies. Thats one feature that would really set it apart from all the other tables out there.(which arent many)
EDIT: Check this link out https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/472263971/playsurface-the-affordable-multi-touch-computing-t
Beer Battle!!!
LOL, Are you going to add Beer Battle!!! that looks neat!!!
Well for MAME you dont need hardware controls but.. it makes it more fun!
Beer battle is great right!! I don't know how possible it is with IR touch technology but its worth research!
OK, I really have never played the old games (I'm only 16) so I don't really no what hardware controls would be used. Is there USB ones already made somewhere? My table supports USB game controllers.

In 1982 you could buy a Sharp PC-1500 (aka TRS-80 PC-2) for what amounts to about $400 (inflation adjusted). It was 7cm longer than your G2x, 2cm wider and almost three times as thick. The magazine ad featured Isaac Asimov (and also his sideburns).
The PC-1500 featured a 156×7 pixel LCD screen, an 8-bit CPU, an integrated speaker and an expansion port for printer and tape drives. It allowed you to program in BASIC (one program at a time, please), but some German devs later cracked the device and released an assembler. It had 6 KB of internal RAM, but you could more than double that by buying an 8 KB expansion module. My research on this is ongoing, but I do not think you could use the PC-1500 to add/stop/start torrents remotely or to control XBMC.
I have been thinking about the PC-1500 all day, patting the G2x-sized lump in my pocket and smiling. (But not in a pervy way.)

You couldn't resist could you? ha ha!
I saw this morniung they're releasing an updated version of the Commodore 64. Now that was a cool computer. I loved my Commodore 64.
And I sure agree. It's truly amazing if you consider it, the power in this little phone.
I need quite a few of them for a robotics project.
They need to be small.. don't need to be high powered.
?
Im kinda confused on what your looking for?
"looking for tiny cheap easy(wut?) to mod android devices"
If you mean cheap androids, you would be surprised how cheap they go on craigslist.

I'm looking for a few cheap phones "devices".
As small as possible.
That have:
touch input
small screen
blue tooth
Magnometer &/ accelerometer.
camera
usb
mSD slot
wi-fi.. gsm and gps not required.
For use for a swarm robotics project.
About 300 to 600MHz cpu's with 64 to 512 mb ram?
Guys i really need help finding some.. every year the most advanced project wins the prize.
My lecturer looked over my plans for 12 flying combat simulation drones.
The idea is to show some intelligence. so i need to keep the brains for these drones light and fast.
They will combat to death in a simulated Arena.. targets are marked with lasers and drones need to work together in teams of 6.
My Field of battle the school is going to kindly provide me is the foot ball field.
My plan is to setup blocks and walls and markers in the fashion of "Dota , LoL 5v5, Hon" maps.
And have 2 teams rip each other apart. till primary base tower is gone.
This i a huge project.. and i'm getting allot of support. but i have till the end of the year.
I already built 8 drones.. all identical.
But now i need the brains.
My first prototype i used a "x10 mini" but i'm hoping to find something cheaper and perhaps lighter..
This is a big chance to stop working crappy jobs and actually get my life into order.
help
Htc hero meets all of those. (screen cant really get smaller if you want cheap)
the usb on the phone might be proprietary but the other end should be fine.
I saw them start of in the teens on ebay.
hope i help. plz thank if i did.
HTC Wildfire.
Very inspiring thread. Sound like a really cool project and I would love to see the result
I can recommend phonearena (website) which has a comparison tool. You should be able to find the best device for your project.
Good luck.
Looks like you wont get any smaller than the x10 mini. the wildfire S is a good option too(little lighter than hero) but not as many and not as cheap.

I managed to track down a few X10 mini's for quite dirt cheap.
I looked at the other devices but the mini makes the most sense for the project.
i have wasted US$800 on this
Update:
Crowd funding campaign is online:
www.startnext.de/en/andock
Hello everyone,
Today I would like to ask you about your opinion on my self-developed Nexus 4 Dock. First, I wanted to develop the station just for me, because I couldn’t find a Nexus 4 docking station that really fits my needs. Now I’m thinking about starting my own crowd funding campaign with this station. I already got some positive feedback on the German website android-hilfe.de.
The features of my docking station are:
- SlimPort included
- Active cooling by a fan to prevent the usual CPU throttling
- Display in widescreen format unlike the usual docking stations
- NFC-Tag
- cube shape design
- Docking Station is weighted to provide more stability
I also created a website for this project: andock.com
What do you think? Would you be interested in such a station? Thank you for your opinion.
So here are some pictures:
1) Frankly, the prototype looks terrible, especially when placed next to the Apple mouse and keyboard with their curves. Hopefully that's not what the final product will look like. Some round corners might help.
2) Take the LED away. It's not going to do jack if it's behind the phone. You won't be able to see it from the front.
3) Consider making the thickness of the "gap" around the micro usb adjustable so as to accomodate a larger range of phones. One way to do that is to make the gap wider, but provide plastic pieces that can be slipped into the gap to make it narrower. Think ipod dock adapters.
4) You need a better looking power button. It looks like something from the 70s, in which case you should make the dock out of wood. (In that case, disregard point 1 about rounded corners).
5) If possible, the dock should be powered by a micro usb.

Thank you for you quick and honest response.
1) Personally I am not a friend of the “apple curves “ and I especially don’t want to get sued. I wanted to create my own design. But everyone has a different opinion about design and that’s why I asked about your feedback.
2) You can also see the LEDs on the other side
3) SlimPort doesn’t work for other phones either, but depending on the feedback I will also make adjustments for different smartphones.
4) I will think about it. It’s still a prototype.
5) It’s powered by a USB cable.

Well I like it!
Does it charge the phone fast enough to gain a charge when outputting it to a TV? How about with Bluetooth on also for controllers and the like?
I agree that it would be nice to have it adjustable to fit other phones (and cases/bumpers). This might be the only phone with a Slimport, but who's to say other phones won't have them soon?
I agree the whole thing does look a little old school, but as long as its functional.
I would also prefer no LED light, but I might in the minority. I hate how everything in my home has a glow to it LOL.
Ultimately the biggest determining factor for me in buying something like this would be price.

As an N4 owner I'm excited to see any development of nice quality support h/w.
One doubt I have is for the fan cooling. I don't think the case of the N4 is really designed to dissipate much heat to the surrounding air (like most phones) with no fins and a pretty poor thermal conductivity (glass and plastic). I can't imagine that an external fan would help much, and just drive up cost and annoying noise of the dock.

You can switch the fan on and off. Besides I got good results in tests with the fan on. If you run a lot of benchmarks in a row (especially while the Nexus 4 is charging and connected to a TV via bluetooth), you’ll experience a decrease of the benchmark score. The fan definitely reduces this issue. I will post some results in the next days.
I want to make the price as low as possible without any quality restrictions. It will be under 100 Euro.
Great to see people developing unique accessories for the Nexus 4, but for me this dock is just awkward.
The power switch should be replaced with something more modern, and the design should maybe better match the N4. Maybe a glossy black plastic and an led mounted under a more transparent plastic like the led on the N4 is mounted under the glass. Over all, I love the idea and would probably buy it even in its current state.

I'd love it as a kit to put together myself and keep the cost down... already as an option.
100euros would be a bit steep imo. I can already get a dock for cheap.
Your slot should come with a way to accommodate cases too... atleast the bumper

Your dock is interesting, but, unless you're a developer that needs a cable connection (in my opinion) it makes a lot more sense just to buy an Orb and be done with it. File transfers can be done with AirDroid (for example). Wireless charging on the Orb is just as fast as trough cable (I have one) and it doesn't have the hassle of connecting/disconnecting the cable itself.
For someone that really wants the cable connection, it's useful. The design, if you want to really produce it, I'd recommend you to make it in a way that you can plug-in most android phones with the usb dock on the bottom. Make it simpler, why leds, buttons and fan (sorry, but I really don't think you need a fan in it)? Otherwise, good work.
Hi, I don't own a nexus 4 but I'm intrigued with ur project. To me, the concept is nice: something minimalistic, able to cool down the phone and provide connectivity to another device (or computer). It'd be a good idea if u can make the cube have a glossy texture, like white or black because it will still look nice even if u don't want to smooth out the edges. Also, it would be nice if it can accommodate phones that have a screen size of 5" or more (perhaps a slightly bigger cube). Also, I think led is fine but the switch for the fan should be smaller, maybe something rounded like the buttons of the iPhone 5 or a power button of any android phone and can also disguise with the cube's color. I believe something like that would look really nice on any desk.

Thank you for your feedback. I take it seriously.
Here is the promised article about the fan of my docking station:
http://www.andock.com/2013/04/the-temperature-of-google-nexus-4-with.html
The article + picture explains the purpose behind a dock like this, you essentially want to be able to run your N4 as a console (hence the fan and necessity of slimport) seems like a niche product for a niche phone.
Seems cool but for the same price I could get an Ouya and keep my phone for phone stuff.
I'm intrigued. If this went to market I would be very tempted to buy. Could set it on my desk, hook up sixaxis controller and jam out a few games easily.

It’s SLS.
I really liked it because of the structure of the material. It’s not like the usual plastic or FDM.

It's beta/developer hardware right now, the retail stuff will have to be better (they are planning on selling at BB/Amazon.) The software on the other hand...I already went through that once with the boxee box (solid hardware + crap software.)
Hey guys, so, I know there's a lot of you out there who are thinking of getting a controller for your shield tablet, thinking you should get a console controller w/ bluetooth or something of that nature, but I honestly think this is the best controller out there, despite some of its flaws. This isn't really a professional review, just some pictures and captions xP But I think it'll give people an idea of what to expect. The pictures were relatively big, 4000x3000, so I had to resize them all to 1024x768 on postimg. You can click the thumbnails to get a better view.
So as far as the box goes, there's nothing really much to say, it's mostly in chinese.
There's not much inside the box. Just the controller, a charge cable that's about 3 meters long, and an instruction manual.
The sheer size of this thing after first holding it literally had me laughing for about 10 minutes, just actually taking in that I'm holding this gaming device that is now about 13.5" long was just funny xD
After playing with this thing for an hour or two, going back to the Vita, the Vita felt extremely tiny in comparison.
This thing has three modes to pair, each is selected by turning the controller on while holding either X, Y, or A and pressing the home button at the same time. There is Keyboard, Gamepad(What you'd use), and mouse mode. Gamepad is X+Home.
Showing off Black Ops 2 played through Gamestream here:
The controller works very well with gamestream, practically no input lag AT ALL, but there is some video lag though that's NVIDIA's fault and will hopefully be lowered in the later months/years.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACTUAL REVIEW NOW
Now, onto some actual reviewy type stuff, the pros and cons. The build quality for this controller is absolutely FANTASTIC for $30, It feels much better than my Moga Pro in every aspect except portability, but for a tablet I'm sure you aren't expecting that anyway. The sticks feel amazing to the touch and have just the right amount of resistance, both the face buttons and the top buttons feel nice, just everything feels great and it's hard to believe this thing only costs $30, but there are some cons.
Not exactly a con: Ports
The ports are hidden as you have the controller fit as snug as possible, but it is completely possible to raise the tablet up higher while it's in the controller and have every port shown while still having a tight fit. It'll look something along the lines of this.
I kid you not I was flinging this controller up and down and left and right and even with the tablet in that high, it didn't budge at all, this controller holds your device in very well.
Pro: Works with Gamemapper
For some reason it's 2015 and we still have FPS games that don't have native gamepad support(NOVA 3). Luckily, just hold the start button and you can bring up NVIDIA's gamemapper.
(60/40) Con: D-PAD
Don't get me wrong, this is a really great D-PAD...For everything other than fighters. It feels nice, it works almost perfectly, the problem is, diagonal inputs don't read as naturally as they should. You have to kind of put more effort into getting the D-PAD in the diagonal portion of the gate to correctly get a hadouken or whatever you want out. It's kind of frustrating. A side note, for some reason, the Home button doesn't work at all. Not sure if I have a broken controller or if it just doesn't work correctly with Lollipop.
Con: L2/R2 (LT/RT for you X360 users)
Even though they feel nice to press, I can't get over the fact that these are just buttons, and not actual triggers. I don't even want to try a racing game with Gamestream because of how much it'd fail. They work fine with everything else though.
All in all, this is a very nice controller, and even with those cons, I'd recommend it to ANYONE looking for a controller for ANY tablet. Definitely the best bang for your buck.
MY SCORE: 9/10
You can purchase the controller really cheap at:

Hi guys,
Wondering if any one had any suggestions for a compact but solid and reliable gamepad (vice-style) that fits and works well with this phone.
I had a Razer Phone 2 with the Razer Junglecat before this phone and I am used to this quality build - if anyone has ideas would be appreciated.
thanks
I am waiting for the razer kishi to be released : https://www.razer.com/eu-en/gaming-controllers/razer-kishi
It's build in collaboration with the guys from gamevice.

Looking at stadia is it any good? Would be good to pair with a game pad like that
This razer kishi is built especially for cloud gaming thanks to its zero latency USB-c connection to the phone.
No Bluetooth required.
Yeah....well the whole reason I wrote this thread is because I am sick and tired of waiting for the Razer damn Kishi to come out....was announced ages ago ...been waiting and waiting too long
I'm also impatiently waiting.
The Glap controller though bulky could probably do the trick. https://www.samsung.com/uk/mobile-accessories/glap-gamepad/

this looks very good!!
Yes it doesnt look that portable (especially as i am used to the jungle cat which took up less space than my wallet!!)
However if i was to get something this big i am a bit fussy with the right analogue stick i prefer it below the buttons just like the Xbox style...this is what i am used to.
I already have one that looks very similar to this as well - the IPEGA PG-9023...it was also a lot cheaper!!
Would the Samsung have much better build quality and lag-free connection?
Also a question - is the Razer Kishi going to be wired only or will there be a Bluetooth option?
I have never used any Ipega products but I have heard that the controllers suffer from analog stick dead zones which are not present in the Glap.
According to the Verge's article, the kishi has no built-in battery. It will use the phones power so it's very unlikely that it will have Bluetooth.
Been looking at reviews on Youtube - the one below looks like a pretty good bet - he says the Coolpad Legacy fits in perfectly and Oneplus 8 Pro has pretty close dimensions to that

Yes you are right they do. the difference between my junglecat and the ipega is so noticable. the junglecat is so responsive......i also have a Moga Hero Power which i think is excellent - however this has now become a legacy product and you cant even get the app on the play store anymore and you need it to connect the game pad - i have to download the apk manually to get it paired...but it is very good!
If the junglecat doesnt have a built in battery then forget it
I've been using the ipega extendible for a while now. I have the Moga pro, out of the two of them i prefer the ipega, plus it was only £20 Vs £49.99
That razer device looks like it's going to fall apart. The ipega is solid, it can hold an iPad.

First off, calm down ok? Theres no need to act the way you are, alright?
Secondly the one I was referring to was the kishi, it looks like it's going to have problems, the construction of the middle isn't great.
3rd, I've got the ipega extendible, not sure if you've had this one but I do, there are no problems with input lag, depending on how you've set it up, the analogues can be seen as digital, I haven't set mine up like that, no problems with deadzones, I've finished tonnes of games using it
Thats my input, you asked for a vice like controller..is there any need to bash a suggestion? Or talk the way you are? Several ?????? It's childish, you didn't mention what controllers you'd used besides one.
Perhaps you could be clearer when you articulate yourself during thread creation, if you don't like a suggestion then say so, no need to bash it, try to be polite
I'm pretty calm mate ...all good
Yeah i got the extendible as well... joysticks are so far off its a killer for me. All depends on the quality you're used to i guess....IMO u get what u pay for in general and thats why Ipega stuff is so cheap

Good to know you have no issues with your Ipega. That being said, Razer is a gaming company and they have an awesome track record when it comes to some of the best build quality out there.
I use cloud gaming services quite a lot and having the lowest latency means plugging in my computer to a gigabit Ethernet port and using a wired xbox controller.
If you want the best possible experience on android the same applies here, a physical USB-C connection to the phone will always be better than Bluetooth IMO. When cloud gaming, Bluetooth adds an extra layer of latency; with time this will get better but for now that's how it is.
I guess its up to the buyer to determine if the price of the Kishi is worth it
