[App] Connection Checker - Android Apps and Games

Hi - I'm a new Android developer and would like to get your feedback on my first app, Connection Checker.
Description: If your Wifi or Mobile connection drops out all the time, Connection Checker will let you know when your network is down and will try to fix it.
Use it when you have crummy Wifi connections or when your mobile connection disconnects too often.

The current market version of Connection Checker uses in-app billing for some features, but I'm going to be releasing a full paid version shortly. I've included the apk for the paid version below. Any feedback you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
-Jeremy
PS: I've mostly been a lurker on XDA, so if this post is inappropriate I apologize.

Beta Pro version: (beta V1.0.12)
Changelog:
v1.0.12
* The "Mobile Action" is only selectable in Froyo and Older. This is to reduce confusion because that option doesn't work in Gingerbread and later. Also other minor preference panel changes.
v1.0.11
* You can now select between toggling Airplane mode and toggling just the mobile connection. (This only works on 2.2 and older devices).
* Added option to stop check when Bluetooth is enabled.
* Improved some translations
* Reliability fix for Toggle Airplane (and mobile)
v1.0.10
* Major reliability improvement - much more accurate connection check
v1.0.9
* Added support for Japanese and Korean in app
v1.0.8
* Initial Release

Just so happens I'm in a situation in which I could use something like this, look forward to taking it for a spin.
Good luck Jeremy.

Any more feedback? If no-one had major issues I'm going to publish this APK!

Hey - This program is really designed to detect when the internet appears to be working, but doesn't actually work. If the connection is actually dropping out on you, this app can't make it *not* drop out.

How will this work with programs like JuiceDefender that turn off radios when the screen is off? Could you make your app only active when the screen is on?

That is no problem - if the radio is off Connection Checker does nothing.

That does seem to be the observed behavior, it is not interfering with JuiceDefender.

I need something like this for my connection at home. Thanks for posting I'll let you know how it goes. So far so good.

Looks very nice!
I'll test this and buy it if I find it works well

I would like too see a strength plotter

Hey Jeremy
Nice name btw The app appears to be working, however I believe the known wifi drop-out issue in the Freex10 beta4 ROM has reared its ugly head. The log goes as follows:
8:26:17 WIFI connection up
8:32:32 WIFI connection up
8:37:49 Bad Wifi Connection; Disabling for 30 minutes
8:43:04 No active network
8:43:47 No active network
etc.
The wifi is still switched on on my phone (XPERIA X10i) and the wifi network at home is working, so the issue is obviously with the updated ROM. I have to either swith the phone wifi off then on, or reconnect to the network manually.
I realise this isn't a problem with your app (which seems pretty good) however I thought you (and other FreeX10 users) might be interested to know this.
Cheers
Jeremy
EDIT: I just installed the Blade WIFI fix and my phone doesn't seem to drop out anymore...
Now to retest this app again

wow very nice app, does it read from cat log? anybody have try it with speedmod kernel for sgs?

any info on battery life?! background apps that constantly DO something usually drain battery a lot

I'm not familiar with that so I'll have to look into it more. I'm planning on making the app a little bit smarter when it detects a failure, so that might help in your case.

It doesn't read from the log - it periodically connects to a server and verifies that you internet is working correctly.

The app has been fairly widely used for a few weeks now, and most people say that their battery life improves. My best guess about that is that when on a bad connection the device wastes more power. Honestly, I thought the app would be a battery killer when I wrote it, but on the two devices I use it seems to have zero change.

will give this a go thanks

Yes, I'm giving this a go also since my WiFi gets flaky on the other side of the house. It will be nice to know when it drops and then set it to re-enable instead of me getting frustrated.
Ciao!

tried the free and the pro version, doesn't seem to enable Wifi when my mobile connection is dropped. don't know why

Wifi issue after 3.2

I am experiencing some bizarre wifi issues, without any reason my transformer has begun some sort of loop..
Basically it keeps turning wifi on and off constantly and the only way to stop it is to turn the device completely off..
Does anybody else know of this issue ?
And hopefully how to fix it.. :/
I'll film it next time it happens just to show exactly what is going on.
mine seems to be fine after updating to 3.2
maybe its compatibility issues with your wifi router.
try disabling wireless N mode in your wifi router, because if i am not mistaken the TF does not implement full wireless N mode over all bands.
wifi N
I have a dual band, I am broadcasting on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz and none of my other units seems to have any issues.
Also not an automatic channel, I've set it up to be the channel with the least interference..
There doesn't really seem to be a reason for the issue.
Only new addition to my devices is a popcorn hour, but that is cabled and has no cause to be an issue for a wifi unit.
Same here
Wifi power is turning on and off and on and off...
It happens when i wake up my TF, but after 2 min it is ok.
I'm having this issue as well, I'm using the latest stock 3.2, the only way to break the loop is to shut the TF down and then reboot.
Its random, but seems to be happening more after a wake up from standby.
At home or on my friends WiFi.
Im having this issue too...seems to happen after sleep . Only way to stop it for me is a reboot...very annoying
I know its a pain but have you tried a factory reset. I'm not seeing this issue with any rom. I have in the past but it was from not wiping when changing roms
The issue was created in the most recent update of Google Maps. If you go to "My Apps" and uninstall the Google Maps Update, you will no longer have the WiFi Issues. This fix has been confirmed with tests.
She be posted as a "sticky"

Thank you very much! I was searching all over the forums for this. One post mentioned about wireless signal channels but had no effect. Not until I came upon this post did it resolve the problem. Has someone notified Google about this? Also, I think this should be placed as a "sticky" so everyone can find it at the top of the Q&A list.
THANK YOU
Is it weird to say that I love you ??
This problem was driving me nuts..
Used up 40% battery life on nothing other than that crap :/
Impressive that Google once again releases such a buggy update, sometimes I wonder if they ever test what they release..
Just started happening to me yesterday. I upgraded awhile ago, so it may have been happening all along, but I just noticed it yesterday.
I had to change my settings to no longer turn off wifi, so I just leave wifi on constantly and this stopped the problem. I'm sure I'm draining the battery faster, but the wifi on/off loop was annoying me. Hopefully the bug will be fixed soon.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Thanks, I've now set mine too, to wifi always on. Where are bugs like this reported?
I too have this weird wifi on/off loop after coming out of standby both at home and at work. 3.2 updated and happily used with no problems. This started in the past 5/6 days or so. I like the sound of blaming Google Maps updates though. Will give it a try.
It's never weird to express your love!
---------- Post added at 07:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:38 AM ----------
It worked. Now how do I make sure maps doesn't auto update as it has done in the past? I can set that option for stuff I've downloaded but not maps.
Noticed this problem as well. I thought the transformer had gone bonkers.
Bug raised
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=20076
What version of Google maps? I just bought my TF and I have v5.2.0 installed on the device, with no options to downgrade. My WIFI won't even turn on and recognise any networks.
I am again experiencing the problem, even after removing the maps update.. :/
Workaround
I have a solution posted to my blog, but I cannot link to it. It's a simple fix, no patch or anything like that.
Google can probably find it as it's a Blogger site.
My link to my blog was flagged as spam.
I have just a teensy problem with the definition of what's spam here and what's not.
I don't like creating content all the time for someone else's site and increasing their traffic through my work. I help out here a little here and there as it is on this site.
This one, I'm keeping.
It's jerdog's right to control this board, but if I come up with something original, or at least something I hadn't been able to find myself, I think I should at least get the traffic for giving it away.
So, I hope this is enough of a gray area post to not get it flagged again.

WiFi Calling Controls
Introduction
Control the T-Mobile WiFi Calling feature programmatically with a Locale plugin compatible app, such as Tasker, Locale, or Llama! Use this plugin to only enable WiFi calling when you are at certain locations, potentially saving battery life, improving call quality, and reducing the Cell->WiFi handover delay. Monitor the state of WiFi calling to trigger actions when WiFi calling is enabled/disabled!
If that sounds too complicated for your liking, there is also a widget for the quick and easy toggling of WiFi Calling!
Samsung users MUST install this as a system app. This requires root!
This will ONLY work with T-Mobile phones that have the WiFi Calling app already installed!

Unfortunately there is a known issue with recent Samsung devices (including the Note 3). T-Mobile uses Samsung's built-in IMS system instead of Movial's for wifi calling, so it will take some time and effort to reverse engineer that as well. The good news is that I have ordered a Samsung device and hopefully will be able to use it to test my app. Give me one or two weeks to get this working, please!
I was also trying to avoid posting apks on here since the app is still very much a beta and will change frequently, but I will absolutely post one when I am getting close to releasing! The play store link is in the beta G+ group.
Thanks!
Now released to the public, with Samsung compatibility!

Sorry, right now I have no plans to add sprint compatibility. I have neither a sprint device nor a sprint plan, so it would be really hard for me to develop that. This app is open source though, so there is always the chance another developer could do it!
YES
I was searching for an app to do exactly this. Went to download for my Xperia Z1s on the Play Store and it says it is not compatible. Downloading the apk now to test it out. Fingers crossed.

Glad to hear it! Please let me know if it works, I can add your phone to the list of compatible phones on the play store. I actually think it should work fine.
edit: Actually I'm just going to disable the device compatibility filter and only filter it by T-Mobile

Haven't tried it with Tasker yet, but the widget works perfectly. Haven't used Tasker in about 2-3 years (at that time I thought it was bogging down my phone), but think I'm going to revisit the app soon - the phones are so much quicker now. I'll report back once I try it on tasker. Thanks for a truly great app.

Awesome, thanks. Now I can keep up on the play store.
I have loaded the Wifi Calling Controls on my LG G3 and it works great, however if I have the Wifi Calling Controls state as part of the profile I have noticed that Tasker doesn't see the State until after the monitor is restarted.
Example: In my Profile IF (Wifi Connected to HomeWifi AND WiFi Calling Controls On) THEN (Stop Wifi Calling) However in the Log the profile stays active until either I'm no longe conntect to my HomeWifi, or Monitor is reset. This issue also persists when my other Profile to turn on Wifi Calling should run, but Tasker sees WiFi Calling Controls as On while the Controls are actually Off.
I have gotten around this issue by not using Wifi Calling State in my Profiles, however I don't like it when Tasker continues to check if I'm connected to the HomeWifi. This also causes my phone to heat up and eat batteries.
Possible fixes:
1) How can I restart Monitoring as part of the Task? If I can do that then when tasker Starts or Stops Wifi Calling I could reset Monitoring, so the Wifi Calling State registers properly.
2) Get monitoring to properly see the Wifi Calling State without restarting Monitoring.
Thanks,
David
This app works great on my LG G4 until it upgrades to MM. Now, it will crash when switching from one profile to another. Any update on this app?

Keep your eye open for an update this weekend. I have fixed the issue with G4 MM as well as the wifi calling state bug on the G3/G2 that @othercents mentioned earlier. Sorry for the lack of updates, guys! S6 compatibility hopefully on it's way soon as well.
Hi,
Is this project still alive? If it is I was wondering if error status could be detected in the future (not just on/off status) as TMO's wifi calling is temperamental, at best...

In real this app sounds good. I have not installed this app. After installing, I would provide my response.
I was checking this app since last 1 week. Wi-Fi is working fine, BT is not that much needed (atleast for me). Bue, data is not turning off it seems. May be I am doing something wrong??
This is app is what im looking for! But, can you hide the data tab if the device doesn't support data? (For wifi devices).

Hi Reachal,
As I understand your issue, your handset might have some issue, as it is properly working for my handset. Sometimes same app works fine for some handset and and not works for other one. So I think this may be your Cell issue.
I am really appreciated with this app. The UI is so super and functionality is too good. I can feel that Battery lifetime is increased by minimum 2 hours for my mobile because of this app. Thanks the developers who developed such a great app. Really appreciable.
Great idea.

This is really challenging. I will see to it what I can do. Dynamically removing Data tab will be difficult. However, if you wish, I can send you apk where only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tabs will be available. Mail me if you need such kind of modification.

[APP][2.3+][ROOT] Toggle Cell Radio 5.0 (xda-exclusive free version)

Hi,
I've developed a widget to toggle cell radio on Android 5.0/5.1 (Lollipop), Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), and Android 7.0/7.1 (Nougat). It requires root.
This is an xda-exclusive free version! If you want to support me, please consider getting the paid version on Google Play or check out my other apps.
Please note: Redistribution of this app is not allowed!
New: Support for dual SIM/multi SIM devices on Android 5.1 and later.
Paid version on Google Play (more functionality): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cygery.togglecellradio
Device compatibility: second post
This free version only includes the widget. The paid version on Google Play additionally includes a Locale/Tasker compatible plugin and support for shortcuts.
Device Support
Device support depends on a variety of factors, including your specific device model, Android version, installed (custom) ROM, used root provider (su binary), and SELinux configuration. This app includes options to deal with different configurations of some of those factors. Please let me know if this app does not work on your device.
Notes
The widget is passive. Thus, it has to request root every time it is refreshed. Although the battery impact is negligible, this usually results in frequent (Toast) messages indicating that the app was granted root rights. Please refer to your superuser management app if you'd like to disable those messages specifically for this app.
Known issues:
Android 6.0/Samsung: There are user reports about issues with Samsung devices and Android 6.0: [1] [2]
Other Issues: When reporting any issues please include the following info in your post: Device, ROM and ROM version, exact version number of this app you use (don't just write "latest"), superuser management app (e.g., SuperSU) and version, content of any shown error messages. Describe in detail what you tried to do, what you expected to happen, and what happened instead. Include screenshots/screencasts where possible and useful to show the issue.
Cheers,
cygery

I'm confused, what does toggle cell radio mean? It doesn't toggle network type (3g, 2g, etc), it doesn't toggle data, so what is left again?

It toggles the cellular radio (mobile network) on and off.

Sorry for the stupid question, but can this be done not automatically? I mean, I can change network type by hand, I can deactivate data by hand, but can I toggle the cellular radio, without putting the phone in airplane mode I mean? Cheers for the clarification
You can do this manually with this app (without enabling airplane mode).
Tested Play Store version works fine on the Shield LTE.
Anyone know how much battery this actually saves in day to day use (like if you've disabled cell radio in the past regularly when on wifi)? I am using the 3g/lte switch that he posted and it's working great. I use GV/hangouts for everything. Wondering if this would be worth it to use anytime I am on wifi. I can't tell battery stats very well with lollipop. It has never shown cell radio for me yet like kitkat used to.

Use it and tell us.
cell radio battery use
The cell radio battery use will vary very much from phone to phone and also depends on signal stength.
On my galaxy s3, with a strong cell signal, my phone uses around 1-2% of battery per hour at idle. With no cell signal, the phone uses 4-6% per hour as it is trying to connect all the time. When I turn off the radio, I draw 1% per hour.
A weak signal will use 2-3% per hour.

Hi,
The widget does not seem to work on the galaxy s3 (Cyanogenmod 4.4.4 M12). When I press the button, it toggles (just the widget, not the radio), and then will not toggle back on.
If I use the dialer to get to the phone menu and toggle the radio from there, the widget will toggle back on (with no effect on the radio).
Phone is rooted.
Not sure if it is an app issue, CM issue, or Galaxy S3 issue.
Thanks for your efforts - it would be nice to toggle from the home page as the battery savings (see previous post) are big.

Samsung s8/s8+ wi-fi nougat fix !!! (aka s7)

just like in s7 nougat
nougat wi-fi fix (losing connection & reconnect) 5Ghz band
Settings > Location > Improve Accuracy > Bluetooth Scanning : Turn it off
also disable "smart network switch" from
connection-wifi-advance-smart network switch Turn it off
That's good for battery life?

I did not see so much difference but it's a thing that you not use.....
what does it fix? which wifi problems?
Actually I do use Smart Network switch, I switches between LTE and Wi-Fi. I also keep LTE alive in the background for faster switching.
If that is turned OFF - I get periods of "no data" usually when I am trying to navigate and the device had locked on some "Xfinity wifi " as that is a very common open wifi.
I am and most of us are "not paying LTE so we don't use it" - This feature allows for better Network switch and less periods of No-Data, IMHO

My device is a non branded edge 7, which also uses both of them simultaneously - that's a thing of beauty

That must be a regional issue. My S7e never lost a wireless connection or had problems moving between cellular and Wi-Fi. Regardless, both the radio h/w and s/w are going to be new on the S8 so things that affected previous phones aren't likely to affect it. We'll probably getting a totally different set of new issues and quirks.

As in you're in the EU and I'm the U.S. and haven't experienced what you're reporting. I also don't remember seeing chronic worldwide wireless issues on the S7e forum. So it doesn't seem like whatever the problem you're referencing is affected all S7e owners equally. And it certainly won't affect S8 owners because the radio h/w and accompanying s/w is new.
how wipe cache will going to work on s8 ??

Instead of home button you must hold Bixby button
Seems like no matter what I turn off, wifi still toggles automatically, I've wiped cache, booted into safe mode, factory reset, took away permissions to system settings.
Is there a way to trace what is commanding wifi to toggle?
Maybe if I can trace it and will be able to disable it
I see that no apps have requested this through the "wifi control history"
I knew I couldn't be the only one experiencing this, so I'm glad there is at least discussion about it.
I made a related thread in the Q&A this morning before I found this thread.
I'm on the T-Mobile S8, and I do connect to a 5Ghz band. Thankfully I don't use smart network switch nor do I want my device scanning for bluetooth when I have bluetooth disabled (they say it's for "location accuracy", but it's actually for ad services).
I only disabled bluetooth scanning when bluetooth is off a few minutes before finding this thread, so I'll report back if wifi continues to drop in the coming days.

Same for me. Did you install some software update?
Well I've been messing around with this issue for hours and hours. The only solution is to set my routers to 2.4ghz because 5ghz makes this phone go crazy.
Just my 5 cents -> do this or stop wasting time until either Sammy releases a fix (doubtful) or root + custom ROMs start appearing (more likely) so a specific Dev fixes the problem.
This much money and I haveto change MY other equip to have it working.
Bah!

I did install an update that came out a day after I received my s8, but this was happening before that as well. And if happened right out of the box, during the initial set up.

For those of you that are losing Wi-Fi connection and reconnecting, go into your router configuration and change the channel until you find the channel that is most reliable in your area. That's usually the main cause most of the time for disconnect issues. Change your 5Ghz channel and you most likely will find one that works fine. If the router is in "auto channel select" mode, take it out of auto and set a channel manually until you find the channel that works for your area.
