[Q] Question about overclocking..... - HTC Inspire 4G

I see these post where people are running there cpu at 1.5 even a few at 1.8.
If i set mine to anything over 1267 my phone locks up instantly and i have to pull the battery.
Am i doing something wrong or something ??
I have used both setcpu and no frills.

Every CPU is different. Yours, unfortunately, is terrible at OCing.
Sucks, but there's nothing you can do about it.

LOL just my luck !!

Have you tried it on any other roms? I could be mistaken, but the kernle could have a bit to do w/ it too.
I can take mine to the highest the CM7 allows w/out issue, not that I'd do it w/ an regularity. That's be a 50% OC.

Ive tried about every rom ... lol They are all the same anything over 1267 locks up... so i just run at 1190 smartass.

That blows.

My wife says she is surprised it even still works .. Ive flashed it 50 or 60 times ...LOL

like a boss
lol, what kernel are you working with?

LeeDroid 3.0.1

Try MDeeJays new kernel it rocks. Always been a flawless flash for me. Just makes sure your rom will run it.

I had this issue with several ROMS. I recently flashed phoenix gb cm rom and oc work awesome Max settings. I'm also surprised my phone still works considering I flash multiple times daily.
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G

It's hit and miss for me on CM7, I can run 1.5oc pretty easily though.

Can't overclock my Nexus S

Hey all,
I've tried on multiple occasions now to overclock my phone, using both the Trinity & Netarchy (1.1) kernel, everytime I have done so however it will put me into a bootloop, sometimes not getting past the nexus boot animation or lock screen, I'm sure that I'm doing everything right
1. Wipe data/cache
2. Flash ROM (I've tried Stock, Bionic, CM & Modaco, which I use currently.)
3. Boot
4. Flash kernel
5. Boot
I've no idea what's going on, I've just about given up, perhaps I've been handed a crappy piece of silicon, should have returned it before it was too late
Any help appreciated anyways, peacee.
Instead of flashing the ROM and then immediately applying the kernel, let the phone completely reboot. Then go back into recovery and flash the new kernel. Should work.
I've tried this already dude, probably should of mentioned it in my steps cheers anyhows

I've tried Trinity 1.2 > 1.4 on Modaco, Bionix & Cyanogen platforms
I've tried Netarchy 1.1 > Modaco & Cyanogen (1.0 was actually working but following the thread it wasn't actually applying the overclock )

Have you tried Netarchy 1.2 yet? I've had a lot of issues with CM7, including kernels. Sometimes I would have to just flash the kernel 3 times and then it would work. Now I'm using MoDaCo and it is infinitely more stable. I've noticed the trinity kernels tend to be a little more volatile and hit or miss than the Netarchy one seems to be. If it is really of grave concern to you, if you live in an area where a return would be easily possible and if you are within your return period, return it and try a different slice of silicon
I've actually had this phone since release date, sadly I am out of the return period, I don't really mind all that much, this phone has been amazing coming from a constantly slow and crashing iPhone 3G.
I've just downloaded the new kernel from Netarchy, it seems to address stability issues regarding voltage, which I think it might be. I'll flash it and update this post in a second.
EDIT: Hasn't helped seems to be looping at the Google screen now.
Same thing is happening to me. I've had my phone since launch date and I can't seem to get it to overclock more than 1.3ghz (which is very unstable). It's so frustrating when people are posting pictures of 4000+ score on quadrant and I get a bootloop instead. I really hope they can tweak it so that people like us can run at these higher frequencies.
What the heck? I keep hitting edit but it keeps quoting =( please delete.

Have you tried Netarchy's kernel? A link to his thread is in my sig and it works great for me. It will boot you to 1GHz then using SetCPU (which can be attained for free on XDA, legally, just search for it. The Dev posted it) you can up the clock speed. You should take note however that the Nexus S is damned fast stock. I typically run my phone at 1.2GHz unless I want to show off to my friends and then I bump it up hehe
EDIT: Thank you also for not posting a new thread about this Its nice to see people using the search function!
Blah please delete.
I'm using netarchy's kernel right now at 1.3ghz but as soon as i go to 1.4ghz it crashes which is slightly annoying. 1.3ghz is much more stable now though.

Odd...for my own testing purposes I've been running at 1.4GHz (testing battery life vs other clock speeds) since yesterday and haven't had a single crash. What ROM are you using?
I'm using modaco r10 and correction to my earlier post, 1.3ghz on netarchy's kernel isn't much better than trinity. Ran Nfs shift for 5 seconds and it rebooted.

Hmm, I used his 1.1v kernel on MoDaCo but never the new kernel so I can't speak to its stability.
Some phones are able to run up to 1.4-1.5 without issues whereas some aren't due to hardware limitations (different batch, build quality etc).
Most however, from what i read in the forums, are able to clock up to 1.3 with either kernels (CFS or BFS, versions types etc) without facing the issue of random rebootings.
Personally, i'm only able to clock up to 1.3. I'll get random reboots if i run smartbench with a 1.4. Quadrant is fine for me at 1.4 though. Was able to get ~3500-3600 scores but in terms of real life situations, i can't tell the difference between a 1.3 to 1.4.
Hey guys,
seems my thread is still alive I flashed the newest version of netarchy the other day, I can manage 1.2-1.3 quite happily atm - I have to manually use SetCPU after each boot though, if I set on boot it will loop
ah well.

I highly recommend Calkulin+Clemsyn OC/UV kernel (1.5 ghz) rom

So, after people started reporting that their benchmarks are in the 3000's, I decided to flash from ginger RC1 and holy cow this is freakin' fast. Even before I ran the quadrant test everything felt so fast. Twice as fast as vegan gingerbread. I wanted to run the quadrant with all the apps and stuff that I'd be running (quickoffice, dolphin, etc.) and holy cow benchmark was still in the 3000's every time.
I ain't moving to any other rom until someone finds something faster.
Does the unit feel warm or hot ? The rated CPU clock speed is 1.2 (or 1.0, not sure). I am a bit concerned about overclocking to 1.5 at higher voltage. In addition, what apps that were slow and are needing this kind of power ?
Thanks
Sweet.. but honestly with out video drivers for gingerbread its utterly pointless for me :O( Keep us updated on how stable it is :O)

Since when did we "need" anything? The gtab will work just fine with the stock rom. But with a custom rom, it works better. The clakulin+clemsyn v3 combo works even better. I just like the raw power that it gives me.
Added by edit.
But to answer your questions, doesn't feel warm or hot to me at all. Battery life is undoubtedly reduced, although I'm still trying to determine by how much. Stand by for this.

I was concerned about heat and the case feels a bit warmer but not significantly. I guess we will see over time. I would say battery life is reduced but I don't have any numbers. The devs have included a nifty OC profile based on battery life. This is my new favorite rom.
This combo is crazy fast. I scored a 3521 on quadrant. I have been running it for 24 hrs now with no issues. Does not seem to be running hot at all. Battery life seems fine but Im sure it is using more juice.

Here. Nuff said.
Edit.
Keep in mind that I've already installed apps like quickoffice and such. In other words, if I had ran this test right after I flashed this rom I'm sure the score would have been higher.
Here you go: 4484, that beats 345 xooms even overclocked . Oh my.
Sorry about the resolution. I didn't know if I posted at full size if the picture would be huge or not.

How the flying pigs did you get it up to 4484?
Ok, so I ran it a few more times and it seemed a little sluggish as I had been putting it through its paces today . I shut it down and rebooted. I just ran it 3 times in a row. My lowest score after letting it sit for a bit was 4521, best of the 3 was 4665! Yikes.

I am also using and loving this rom. Love the smooth video with Froyo (but wish it could work with Ginger).
It feels slightly warmer than before I think, but the temp sensor never reads above 87 degrees F, which has to be a safe operating temp, right?
Consistently getting ~3500 quadrants with many apps.

Listen to me very carefully. The devs are doing this on their own time without getting paid. Us lowly humans don't wish anything. Ok? Clemsyn said he was going to do ginger soon, and that's his choice. We don't wish anything. Ok? He's not obligated to do anything. What he's done for froyo is way way way beyond what he's suppose to do, which is nothing. Ok? He made it clear just last week that his intention was to return the gtab and move on with his life. He then decided to stick around and created new roms that are almost twice as fast as previous roms.
If you're disappointed, then Clemsyn could just drop the whole thing and leave. If you're disappointed, please go buy an ipad 2, ok?
In fact, I highly recommend against getting a gtab for most people. I promise, you will not be disappointed with the ipad 2. Love you long time. Go, put the disappointment of a device gtab up on ebay and go out and buy the ipad 2 now, please, before you get any more disappointed.

Thank you and others for posting scores.
Very fast. Always loved Calkulin's ROM, and I've come home after playing with Vegan GB for a while (also a great ROM). It also appears that the OC settings work with pershoot's OC kernel as well. I love the fact that it clocks based on battery life.
@goodintentions
Geez guy, did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? It's not like he posted a long harrasing write up for Gingerbread. It was subtle just like you should be. Chill out please.
On that note does anyone have a video of this "Beast ROM" in action?
Wish I could get this combo running. I have been running C&C 1.1+v9 for awhile now and love it. I can't get any of the OC kernals running. The only way I can get this to boot is to install the C&C OC combo and before booting I have to install Clemsyn's v9 kernal. I can't get Pershoots 1.4 ghz kernel running either.
The best I have gotten was with the C&C combo and then installing Clemsyn's OC Extra kernal and I can get to the HC animated boot screen but it never gets past that. My son and I bought our gtabs the same day and his runs all the OC kernels.. Oh Well...

umm just turn in your g2x to someone that is qualified to use it.
What is a Caucasian kernel?
That ladies and gentlemen, is signature worthy.
Edit: Forgot to even answer your question amidst all this racial kernel profiling. Your G2x can't handle the OC/UV kernel, nothing you can do about it.

It's not that he's not qualified. A known issue is that some of the phone's can't support some of the features of other kernels so the phones won't boot. I started a thread about this and Faux chimed in affirming what I thought. It's a fault in the chip. Some can OC/UV, some can't.
Thanks hiko I thought I read something about that but what I don't get now is I flashed the Trinity kernel nd it sees the UV 1.1 in set CPU lol . Ill have to do more testing. As for the Caucasian kernel I blame racist correct lol

Yup. I have this problem. My broken G2x can run custom kernels on Stock. But my replacement G2x can't even get past the boot screen after flashing one. I can't run EB Froyo, and I can't flash faux's kernel unless it's on a Gingerbread ROM. It's pretty lame.

As a couple have already said, not all phones are created equal. One of my phones would not OC and UV at the same time. I was able to hit 1300 stable on mine, but my wife, which has an identical setup, had issues at 1100. Faux released an overclock kernel without the undervolting. Have you tried that?

I have not as the overclocking was not as big of an issue as undervolting was for me. I cant get a single of fauxs kernels to run etx/GB/FR thats does oc/uv but the stock one does it just fine thats goes 1.0sv/1.2oc. the whole reason why i am confused though is i flashed morfics trinity kernel thats oc/uv at the same rate 1.1uv/1.5oc and it loads perfectly fine on my phone. Setcpu sees the standard at 1.1ghz max on autodetect, howeer i have not tried overclocking to anything more than that as i do not have any experience with making the textfile for setcpu to overclock it manually. im going to work on this soon but im hoping someones already made and posted this elsewhere on xda =D
PS: im on a computer this time and ill say this is better than my blackberry who decided to autocorrect "heterosexual" in place of "hey" everytime i tried talking to one of my friends but glad its good for laughs lol
I've consistently gotten Morfic to work as well. Faux said that Morfic hasn't released his source so he can't compare notes and see what's causing the issue.

i hope he does soon as i would love to try fauxs kernel as i hear more about it than morfics. morfics for now works fanfriggintastic for me though. m g2x ocs to 1400 without any problems at all on morfics however has some stability issues randomly at 1500 and i undervolt it always under 1.1 by 75 and runs perfect. battery life is currently at 60% still after 30hrs of use even after phone calls texts and internet usage. no games or heavy downloads yet though. <3uv and juicedefender

Best thing about this phone is the games made for tegra. They are enhanced!
There isn't really a need to change kernal because this phone is fast as is. I tried it, oc'd it and never saw real time improvements. I actually underclock mine to 816mhz and it still plays all games the same.
This phone operates the best for me on Baldwin's kang cm7. Its fast and reliable. Either way you will want to use anything that uses the external sd card for app storage.

G-ma's stock G2x. Updated software?
You mentioned the speed of the stock build. I am curious if GRANDMA has the recent software update. It's V21Y and brings the phone up to Gingerbread 2.3.4 (as opposed to 2.3.3 previously. My wife has been on it over a month now w/o rebooting. It's an awesome stock build! My G2x is rooted and running recent Cyanogenmod real well too. The stock is so good now that even I sometimes restore a rooted stock nandroid for ZERO bugginess!
Joining in the dredging of an old thread - I loaded V21y on both my and my wife's phone - both run slower with noticeably more lag than stock Froyo. But no dreaded Black Screen Of Death, which is what my wife hated (she is on call sometimes). So I guess I'm happy. Someday I should try a dev rom I guess... But I NEED WiFi calling and a2dp - not sure if I can get that in a dev rom...

wifi calling and a2dp work in almost all of the roms, even on the new baseband (except bluetooth calling, but streaming music works), just try one and find out. CM7 is the best place to start

Yea she got the update 2.3.4, the stock build is awesome fast, faster than the htc sense obviously but I still love the htc sense animations are just better on sense if sense could be just as fast as stock id loved it even more lol. Stock makes a big difference even the single core G2 is fast on stock faster than the mytouch even with 2 cores. I've done the test I tap the menu at the same time on the 3 phones and the mytouch is the slowest. However you do see the difference when not on the UI, for example on apps, the browser, and loading obviously the mytouch wins on that aspect 1.2 ghz dual core

theres still some minor issues with the 2.3.4 got one rare SOD and a few odd reboots. cm7 has none of the issues. guess thats the tradeoff for proper quality of calls and a working gps.
I downgraded my baseband back to the March 2011 firmware, loaded up Hell Fire Phoenix with Faux's stable kernel, running V6 SuperCharger, and a Team Carbon theme that I'm currently modifying to my specific likings.
This phone flies for me. Everything works and it looks great while doing it. I really don't see a need to get a new phone, unless I decide I want a larger screen.

I still have random reboots....

Will these ever go away on my nexus s? I have gotten them in everything from stock 2.3, cyanogenmod 7, stock ICS, oxygen, and every single ICS rom I have used. I understand some software bugs take a while to find but I have had this bug for over a year, will it every get a fixed? (Or is this not a software bug but an actual issue with my phone?)
Could be cause from UV settings if you touched them

Nope. I usually run 200 mhz minimum and 1200 max for my cpu. On stock I also ran stock volts.

Well, you're running an overclock... Try running without.
CM7 has a sleep of death/reboot bug, so try another ROM not based on CM7 too.
Highly recommend Oxygen 2.3.2 coupled with Franco 08.12.2011 GB kernel.
If you're interested in ICS ROM, give AOKP ROM and Matr1x kernel a try. It's rock stable for me. I just rebooted to flash the new build, but before that it lasted for couple weeks for me without rebooting. Link to AOKP ROM is in my sig.

There's your problem. Perhaps increase the voltage? Your phone may not be able to handle the frequency without extra voltage.
There should be no random reboots if you never touched anything kernel related. If so, then bear the consequences.
I've been using CM9 v2.2 for about 3 months now haven't overclocked or undervolted and haven't had any "random" reboots ever.
I'd highly recommend the Androxide ROM along with Air Kernel. I've been running this combo overclocked to 1200 without any voltage setting changes for a decent amount of time.
random reboot frequency - about once a week ..

I second that. Usually OCing requires raising voltages across the board. I use +25mV (arm and int). If you're suing a matr1x kernel that's even more reason to raise voltages, because afaik that kernel is undervolted by default.
Best of luck.

Thirding it.
If you are having problems then roll everything back to stock... its not good enough to say you have run every rom , yet fail to mention you OC. What other tweaks do you run? Deep Idle?
I'd bet if you flash CM9 with no tweaking it, it will be fine.

Or just about *ANY* rom for that matter. First ensure you can run it stable without OC, UV, didle, mods, themes etc then, by all means, go ahead and tweak to your hearts's content.
Overclocking to 1200mhz CPU only does NOT require extra voltage across the board, but possibly a boost at the 1200mhz voltage. Each frequency runs at a different, changeable voltage which has nothing to do with all the others. LiveOC, however, raises the frequency of each step and as such generally requires a boost in voltage across the board or thereabouts.
As for the problem the OP is having, who knows. Could you describe any specific things you've done, though? Full wipes (detail what you wipe), titanium backup restores, etc.
First thing i would be trying now is to do a full wipe (factory/data reset, format /boot, format /system), flashing either stock 2.3.6 or 4.0.3 and installing only necesseties and try for a week or so. If there are still reboot problems, describe them and hopefully i can give you some useful things to try. If you had this problem before the 1 year mark you could have probably gotten the phone fixed/replaced under warranty, though. If it is now over a year i'm afraid that's too late though.
Just for info:
ALWAYS on stock, unrooted, right now 4.0.3 OTA. Since 4.0.3 random reboots, w/o any culprit cause I can find..
So, I guess, has nothing to do with ROM, voltage, solar storms, etc..
Well this is all bullcrap. . . i installed CM7.0.1 and CM7 RC1 and the latest ICS from CM team and her phone either randomly reboots or switches off totally while charging in the night.
Its got bugger all to do with the kernel because i used the standard kernel with all the CM7 & CM9 roms and the same things happen over and over.
Also the OC'ing idea is BS, i don't OC my nexus S or hers and even mine suffers random reboots.
there has to be some code somewhere thats not behaving a sit should and google never sorted it and CM team never found it, or the hardware is just ****ty in this hand set.
Have you tried other ROM besides CM7? I remember when I flashed CM7 for the first time. My phone never liked it, it was all bugs for me. I even noticed that OC'ing would generate problems on any ROM.
I just ran away from CM7 and OC'ing.
Try Oxygen ROM (or stock as they stated before) with all set up to defaults and test for a while.

The update was pulled for many reasons. Try stock GB or Oxygen ROM and enjoy life without freeze, sleep of death or reboot...
