I've been watching all the latest phones recently and see with great disappointment that every good new phone that comes on the market is available only at the US.I live in Greece and the only high-end device we got since the Desire is the Galaxy S(priced at about 650 euros). All those years good devices came out mostly here and now this! What is happening? When will we get anything like DroidX or Evo 4G?Right now I feel very disappointed...

Seriously? The HD2 was in Europe first, the Dell Streak is not avail here...you guys get all the stuff first.
Evo is 4g and CDMA...no one else in world has 4g or CDMA I am pretty sure.
Yep, usually the States are last on the release list. But recently there's been a flurry of new device activity
I don't want good devices to come here without coming there,I just think that it'd be better that good phones came to both continents instead of only to one.And I know that the Evo is 4G and CDMA,but there could be a non-4G GSM version for Europe. And what about DroidX?Will we have to stay with the Milestone, the Desire and the HD2?They are really good phones but why not have better when we can?

I am in the UK and we do got a lot of stuff before the USA but i would say there seems to be a difference in prices sometimes, especially Microsoft they seem to hike up the price in the UK Windows vista and windows 7 for example

Lol!
Usually México is the last buddy...
I wish we receive the releases like in the US
I don't know what you are talking about beacuse the desire looks really good...
I beleive Asia gets them a full year before we do. Then what ever doesn't sell in Japan gets sent to the US and Euro. Then they slap an ATT or Tmo sticker on it and call it the latest and greatest! BTW did you konw your phone was RnD'd for a 13 year old japaneese girl. Turns out they are the most influential users for cell phones. By the numbers japaneese school girls use more cell phones then wall street businessman. Thats why cell mnf.'s test their phones with little girls and not grown adults.
Well,as for Desire being a very good phone I don't say otherwise,I might as well buy one. It's just that there aren't many options available for high-end end devices which is a little bit discouraging. Why don't we get devices like the Evo or the DroidX even now?I don't complain because we didn't get the best devices first, but because we didn't get them at all and I haven't heard any clues or rumors that they will come here.
UK Phones are always better than our US phones lol

By the way "gamise ta"(not gamiseta,it's two words) means "**** it" or something like that!Sorry about the vocabulary, but as we cannot get good phones I thought about giving some language lessons!
Anyway, about the whole situation now...Things have been messed up.I wanted to buy a Desire but had no spare money,so I postponed it.Now that I have the money I see all the newer phones and think that, hell, will I get the Desire?I do like it,it's way cooler and better than my Hero, but new phones have 4.3" screens,8 MPx cameras,HD videos etc...Especially when talking about such non-HTC phones,Samsung's Hummingbird and Texas Instruments' OMAP processors are better than Qualcomm's Snapdragon, and mostly in the GPU part(I do love Sense however and don't know if I can have anything else for everyday use...).So what do I do?Buy the Desire and live on wanting something better or wait with the hope that something better will be available in Europe shortly?I am really confused...
And by the way, don't you think that 640 euros for the Galaxy S is a little bit too much?
Really it just depends on your carrier and thier contracts with HTC, samsung, etc... If they are willing to pay for an exclusive deal then they can have their own phone for a set time limit. If not then they are sold to all the carriers with different brands. Tmo went for the HD2 as their flagship phone, ATT went iphoney, Sprint went Evo4, Verizon is going Droid X, METROPCS went RAZR. lol, funny thing is aside from the iphone they are all the same phone with minor modifications.

They are in no way the same phone except for the Evo and the HD2.The Droid X uses Texas Instruments' OMAP processor which is better than the Snapdragon.Anyway,I am starting to think about buying the Galaxy S.It's probably the best one around here.I will miss Sense, but I give far too much emphasis on my hardware and Samsung's Hummingbird is just AWESOME!I love Sense however...Don't ask why,I just love it!Do you think there will be a port available for the Galaxy S?
All the good phones are CDMA recently. What's up with that?
i would love to have the desire or galaxy s right now!
Well, right now I am between the Galaxy S and the Desire.Would buy a GSM variant of the Droid X if it came out but I don't think anything like this will happen anytime soon...I just hate it how phone companies don't give us any of the new phones!
By the way,for the Droid X...Wouldn't it be much better with some custom interface like Sense? In a phone this powerful the UI cannot reduce performane enough for us to notice. And I just HATE vanilla...!
Amazon Germany is selling the Galaxy S for 455€, incl. VAT. Even with s&h, it should not cost more than 470€ anywhere in the Euro-Area.

Well this is upseting...The lowest price I found was somewhere a little below 600€ and it was from a store I had never heard of,which therefore I don't know whether I can trust or not.Except for the case that it is not yet officially released in Greece and what I found was just some pieces brought from other countries. And now that I think of it it's not that insane as no major store has it yet.Maybe the price will drop with the official release!
I agree! I'm dying to get something like Evo or Droid X but GSM compatible! There's nothing even near them! 4.3 Inch display, 8 MPixel video & HDMI out!!! What do we have? Desire? It even can't handle a simple D1 video recording! Can't run Asphalt smoothly!!! The best we can get is Galaxy S which is so iPhony! No LED flash? Just to release it with flash for Sprint!!! I'm sick of it!!!
There's nothing on upcoming list of GSM phones, just check GSMArena! It's way too obsolete these days...
Hi,
I am new to this forum.
I have joined because I have many questions to ask haha.
I'm currently looking to buy a new cellphone.
Right now I am looking at the HTC Hero or the Moto Backflip, but I am also open to suggestions.
What I'm looking for is a solid phone that would last me a good 2-3 years, with a touchscreen and wifi are musts.
I have heard that Android is probably the best OS out there, so i would highly prefer it.
A qwerty keyboard would be nice since i like to use MSN on it. However, it's not a must have.
What i usually do on the phone is just browsing some web pages, youtube, msn, and facebook using wifi.
I do not want a data plan that is why I am looking to buy the phone unlocked on ebay.
My maximum budget is 400 dollars.
Now my question is,
I heard that the hero is a great cellphone, and I am willing to pay an extra 100$ over the backflip's price to get it if it is indeed a great phone.
Would you guys suggest me get the hero? or to get the backflip that has a qwerty keyboard? I have heard that the backflip will have android 2.1 on it, is the update out already??
Or if you guys can suggest another good phone that would be great too!
The price on ebay:
$400 for hero
$300 for Backflip
Please give me some suggestions!
I have read in another thread someone said the Hero is outdated already???
Hasn't it only been out for about half a year only?
If it is outdated, what phone should I go for that is within my price range??
thanks
Hero 100%. Better design, HTC, support, not crippled, gorgeous looking, the list goes on. The backflip has no support from here, and personally I think it's basically the GSM version of the devour. Ugly, boring, no support, and you never see em'
Please get neither if you are willing to spend 400. Both phones are a bit outdated and will have a hard time holding up 2-3 years. Get a nexus one or a Droid (milestone ) for that price

Thanks for your opinion!
I found that the milestone might be a good option since it's within my price range and has a physicial keyboard.
The $600 nexus ones on ebay are a bit beyond what I am willing to spend haha.
So will the Motorola Milestone be the best choice if I have $400?
How's the processor??
Motorola Milestone is an ok choice, but you should try it out first. I would rather stay with HTC devices.
What HTC device would you recommend me to get then ?
Hey, so I'm looking into buying a new phone and the now I'm down to the hero and the backflip. I have never had an android phone before so the phone I decide on can't be too complicated. I'm 14 and I text a lot so the phone has to be able to type easily and fast. Please give me advice if you have experience with one or both of these phones.
Is there any other advices?
I am buying my new handset soon!
+1 for the n1 as already suggested above. You can also look at the HTC Aria or Samsung Captivate.
Unfortunately the Nexus one and the other ones you suggested are somewhat beyond my price range $400 is really my maximum. Unless I can get a used one somewhere ...
As it is one of your original options, I will give my opinion on it : The hTC Hero
Had one of these for a while (by my standards) for now, and its a pretty solid device. Okay, it isn't the fastest processor, and it has likely recieved its last official rom, but i love it
Have just got Éclair running on it, and there are noticeable differences since android 1.5, although no live wallpapers (not that i see this as much of a loss, as I don't tend to just sit and stare at my home screen, i try to use the phone)
There are plenty of apps for it, plenty of custom roms, and a sizeable (albeit not the biggest) user base on xda.
The build quality is pretty decent - it has withstanded my daughter standing, jumping, chewing, and dribbling all over it, so it has passed that test for me.
In my opinion, the downside is the camera - there is no flash. But even then, it is not the worst camera I have had on a phone.
Hope that helps
If you are on ATT and you have $400 you should go with the HTC Aria you can get it off contract for $350. Even though its only a mid level phone it is a much better and newer phone then the Hero and the Backflip.

Hey guys, I'd like some recommendations on what phone I could get in the first half of next year. I've had a T-mobile G1 since 2009, currently running CM 6.1 RC1, my contract is up with T-mobile around March of 2011 and I'm interested in upgrading from the old G1 to something "nicer". What I'm looking for at this point is a bigger screen, fast processor, more internal memory, "good" camera(considering it's a phone), and most important of all: ability to root and run custom roms. As far as carrier choices, I'd be inclined to stay with T-mobile(because of their prices) or maybe verizon, even though Verizon is on the pricey side. Right now the two phones catching my attention are the Galaxy S(t-mobile), the HTC incredible(verizon), and the Evo 4G(Sprint), but 6 months from now there could be newer/better phones. Since I'd be renewing or starting a new contract, the phone will be subsidized, so the cost of a "new" phone shouldn't be an issue. What phones out there should I look into and which upcoming phones should I look forward to?

You need to ignore this train of thought. Whatever you buy, whenever you buy it there will ALWAYS be a new / better phone just around the corner.
Personally, and this is only a personal opinion I'd avoid the Galaxy S and stick with the HTC phones. Why? Just read the threads about the issues and I couldn't help notice the vast majority of issues mentioned in the apps market are Samsung owners. Just my opinion / observation mind.

Im using a galaxy and have no problems with it. Froyo runs flawlessly and the screen is like no other. Plus 5 finger multitouch, best video chip, Great camera, and 16gigs built in music is beast.
Sent from the Bermuda Triangle.
The Evo is now a lower end phone compared to the high powered monsters coming out but i stick with it cause its just an all around great phone dont have any issues and has a very very active community dedicated to making it better and better i almost feel like a nexus owner from how much love this phone gets. Id definitely recommend an HTC phone.
well, when I mentioned the better phones coming out in about 6 months I was only talking about how they could be better than what's available now. Meaning that I'd be inclined to buy what's "hot" at that point, I wasn't contemplating putting myself in an endless loop of always waiting for "the next 6 months".
Back on topic. Today I did some reading on the G2, I saw that there's people pulling off some insane overclocks quite successfully on it. I just find it a bit disappointing that it doesn't have FM radio or dual cameras, and it seems like it doesn't have multitouch either, which is quite odd for a new phone. I also went to a t-mobile store to see it in person, it was a very nice phone to be honest. The galaxy seemed to have a VERY nice screen though, quite eye-catching.
Kinda leaning towards the G2 at this point. I spoke with t-mobile and I was told that I'd be eligible for a subsidized upgrade as soon as January 10th, so I may be looking for a phone much sooner than thought.
So I'm getting the itch to get a new phone. I've currently got a Cliq that I've rooted and customized as I like it so I don't NEED a new phone. I just want one.
I'm with T-Mobile and my wife just recently got the Vibrant. In messing around with it, I think that without the Touch wiz, I'd be really happy with it. Which leads me to the Nexus S. The only reservation I have about the Nexus is the lack of SD card since I carry a ton of music with me for flights. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but it does make me pause.
Does anyone know of any new phones that may be coming out within the next 3-4 months that may be better than the Nexus S?
Thanks
There is always something better around the corner...
But the main advantage to getting a stock Google Phone is that you will get OS updates much faster then everyone else with android skinned devices.
If you like android this is an excellent buy.
Yeah, I know that is a huge advantage to the Nexus line, but I also know that if there is a great phone out there, people will root it and develop for it.
Like I said, I don't "need" a new phone, and the only thing making me think twice is the lack of SD card for music and movie space. (I travel a lot so the less electronics I have to pack the better.) I'm just curious if it would be better for me to wait to buy one in a few months or take the plunge Thursday.
The thing about the Nexus S is that it's future proof, by that I mean so many phones out there will only get 2 updates and thats it. With the Nexus S you could keep it as long as you want because you know your going to continually get updates directly from Google.
Too many people pay attention to wether or not there is better hardware on the horizon when they really should pay attention to whether their software will continue to be updated and keep the device alive and youthful.

To answer your actual question, the only two that have *strong* rumors that I've heard of, are the Evo Shift and the Playstation phone. As for the Shift, the current rumors don't put its specs as all that impressive (no front camera and snapdragon CPU). Supposedly we'll hear about the Playstation phone in February. I've read that its display is supposed to rival the iPhone 4's, whatever that is. In addition, there is a not so strong rumor that Samsung's next flagship will be in Q1. Which should definitely be better than the Nexus S in specs. Motorola is supposed to unveil some new hotness at CES. Probably actually launched late Q1 or after.
My guess is if you want a phone that clearly blows away the Nexus S, you'll be waiting until Q2 or Q3 of next year.
basically it comes down to this.
If your a t-mobile customer and are not going to leave anytime soon, then the Nexus S is the best phone for you.
If you don't mind leaving t-mobile, then wait because in 4-6 months verizon and sprint will probably both get dual core phones but it'll probably be 12 months for T-Mobile to get off their ass and get one. outside of the galaxy s 2, but thats touchwiz.
Also if you just want a stock android phone, then go for it as well because there won't be another one for a while.
Q2 or Q3 may be too long for me. I've read of the Playstation phone and it seems like it may be pretty cool, but I just don't know if I want to wait that long. Is it going to be unlocked to all carriers? I am in a 2 year contract with T-Mobile due to getting my wife a new phone, leaving is pretty much not an option.
More than likely my desire for a new phone will overtake my ability to wait and I'll be at a Best Buy Thursay morning before work.
Any chance they will add an SD card to the Nexus S in the near future???

no idea how the playstation phone carrier wise is going to work, hopefully it will be all carriers, but who knows.
Unfortountly it's safe to say that they will not be adding in an SD slot to the Nexus S. Between tons of apps to stream music and video, and the 13GB of storage that acts like an SD, it should be enough.
You could always buy the Nexus S then return it before the 30 days if they announce promising phones during CES. I'll be working the registration desk at CES so hopefully I have time to look around to play around with all the new phones and gagdets.

Within the next 3-4 months? Hmm.
And also, better? They may be competitors, depending on how you look at it.
There's the LG Star, Motorola Olympus, PlayStation Phone, Evo Shift, and possible Galaxy S 2. Not all of these are confirmed for next '3-4 months' and even then, they might not even be "better".
Sure, the LG Star packs a Tegra 2. Which, in all honesty, has a GPU which barely tops the Hummingbird. Tegra 2 is nothing to be too excited about. If you want a dual core, you want the dual core Snapdragon or the Orion. The Orion will most likely be the only one paired with a gorgeous Super Amoled which is unmatched but this is also preference. Even then, these may not be out for over 4 months.
Also you need to consider software. Generally, nothing runs faster than AOSP. Nor is as open nor fast to get updated. The Nexus One STILL holds its ground merely because it has Froyo when Galaxy S phones still don't. It may not be as powerful as fast, and it may be sluggish, but it's still "ahead" in a sense. This will probably be the case with the Nexus S and Honeycomb, with the exception that this thing has a friggin Hummingbird, which is theoretically capable of running Quake 3 Arena at 90fps with the 56 fps limit unlocked.
Don't get me wrong though, the Tegra 2 isn't BAD. But it isn't worth jumping the gun over a Hummingbird when the Snapdragon and Orion are around the corner to the Tegra 2. Tegra 2 and Hummingbird is like an 'either, or'. Don't let the Tegra 2 be your deciding factor. It's all about the carrier, the way the phone feels to you, and just personal preference in general. If you think the LG Star is hot, then that's what you should get. If you think the Nexus S is hot, then that's what you should get. They will probably perform about equal.

The thing about the PlayStation Phone is that well, it's clunky and huge, and potentially ugly.
I'll tell everyone a secret android is all about software so even if someone puts out a quadcore phone that still won't let it get the newest updates any faster. After 2 years of owning stock android phones I have read thousands of posts of people complaining about why their super phone has yet to get the latest update. Even nexus users had a thread that was 5000 posts of them yelling at Google because 2.2 was a month late.

The only problem is that Android isn't built and optimized (yet) for more than one core. The dual core isn't going to be making a huge impact probably for another six months or more. If you are looking for a phone now, it sounds like the Nexus S is it.
I think this thread convinced me finally to get the NS
Are you guys sure you want a dual core phone? Because, you know, there are already rumors of a quad core phone coming out in 2012 or whatever. Might as well wait for it.
I'm on TMobile... I won't be waiting around. I'm grateful this phone is releasing because after that you got the MT4G's childish face looking you in the eye. And who knows how soon TMO will drop us another gem that competes w/ the NS.

42fps nenamark + 67 fps neocore @ lg star... 1-8fps more for tegra in comparsion to hummingbird is way less then i thought and not worth an upgrade (yet) .... the difference between snapdragon and hunmingbird is much bigger regarding the gpu
Edit: getting 47.1fps on my sgs in nenamark... 59fps at neocore(seems to be limited to 59...) sooo where's the point in tegra2 anyway?

Hey mklgee, you mentioned buying the Nexus S and then returning within 30 days. Is this an option Best Buy does with smartphones? If so, that is an interesting idea if something does pop up soon after the Nexus release.
After reading these discussions, I think I will just go ahead and get the Nexus S on Thursday. I do wish it had an SD card though. I currently have a 16gb SD card in my Cliq that is filled with music, pics, and app info. I just hope a phone doesn't come out say in April that is so much better to make me remourseful.
Thanks for the discussion points guys.

I don't want to bite the bullet on yesterdays technology if something is 2-3 months away (since I will wait 2 years for another upgrade); I don't believe LTE will take hold until another year or two anyway, so that will be a good time to upgrade again.
Any insight or opinions are appreciated.
First off, someone can't tell you the best phone to get. Everyone is different and sees things differently. One thing that you see necessary and better than something else, could very well be a different view than someone else has. That's why carriers make different phones. Not everyone will like, for example, Sammy's Galaxy Note, so they also released other phones around the same time.
If you're on Verizon, I'd say wait. The Bionic is out today, but you should wait until the Primes(Droid or Nexus) and the Vigor, and maybe the Titan come out. Then you'll be able to make a fair decision since you can actually test out the phone, see what type of dev support it has here, etc.
Best way to find the best phone for YOU is to go out and try them.
Yes, per my post it is AT&T for the carrier.
Of those devices you listed do you know that they are coming out for ATT and when?
Next, asthetics are less critical than functionality to me. Nonetheless I have big hands, and as I mentioned I use a tilt2, and although once I've narrowed this down I will go put the final contenders in my hand. I'm not going to waste my time doing that until I've got a list of devices narrowed down based on performance and functionality. (besides the dealers don't seem to know much about the devices, which is my I'm posting here!!!) Lastly, most all of the objectives I have for evaluating performance and function cannot be tested in the store... and there would not be enough time in the store if I could, lol. This is where research comes into play.
All opinions welcome thanks for sharing your preferences!!!
For AT&T, the Galaxy S 2 appears to be the absolute best phone coming in the next 3 months. The Infuse, if it were updated to Android Gingerbread, would be just as good...maybe better because of the larger display.
I am not exactly sure when the Galaxy S 2 comes out, if its in the next 3 months, i would get it. That is my opinion, I am using the Galaxy S, so i kind of have a biased opinion. The phone is great, it has its flaws though, as does every other device on the market. Overall though, it is a great device and i know the Galaxy S 2 will only be better.
Thanks for the input, yes, I was surprised to see that the newer phone drops from 4.5 to 4.3", but the hardware and software are better on paper.
Supposedly the GS2 comes out after Sept 18th, even if it turns out to be Mid October that is soon enough for me. I'll go put one in my hand in October, and see what the latest news is for November/December and make my "final answer".
I really want a GS2 but im not sure if my cellular company is even going to get the GS2, if they do, it will be one with less features. I hope helped you like you were looking for, I cant wait to see what others suggest, hopefully some good ones.

Oh couldn't tell since you mentioned Verizon smart phones. The Vigor will probably have a AT&T counterpart...may be later down the line though. Seems like HTC likes to keep similar phones on all 4 carriers.
best get the iphone 5
Palm Treo, they're very reliable and offer a wide range of modern features..Though not as appealing as a iPhone 5 or Optimus or Prime, it's still quite the contender. The Palm OS contains features for the business person and many good classic games like PacMan or Tetris. Hope this post gives you an insight on the best phone for you.

What's wrong with offering my honest opinion? He did say the best phone, and I gave him a top notch choice . The treo can hold its ground against the scary iPhone 5G or any fancy dual core device, it does feature 3D accelerated graphics, which is also avail on iPhone, making these very similar in specs.

Hmm, is there an AT&T launch date? any specs released?
edit: latest info I have found... I can't believe it is really a month from launch and no specs are confirmed... weird.

final conclusion, there should be 3-4 big smart phone releases, but likely not all will be out until beginning to mid of November. So I'm going to wait to find out more about all of their specs once released, as well as put a few of them in my hand once they hit stores.
I think for me the main choices will be between the HTC Titan, the GS2, and the Nexus Prime (or whatever name it finally has); If I wasn't so anti-apple, the Iphone5 will also be a contender and should be released within a month.
